OFFICIALS of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Nigeria 2009, say the Lagos State government has paid N32 million to buy seats at the Teslim Balogun Stadium for the tournament. The stadium will host matches up until the semi-final of the championships and the state government has moved to ensure that there will be few empty seats to be seen. “The Lagos State government has paid N32 million for 15,000 seats and the simple implication is that all the matches at the Lagos sub-seats would be jam-packed. This is what I expect other sub-seat to do. “The 5,000 seats left in Lagos sub-seat would be sold on the streets and in Fifa’s rating, Lagos is already a success story even before the matches are played,” LOC Marketing Officer, Mike Itemuagbor, said. He also added that the Eyo masquerade has been approved as the official composite logo for Lagos sub-seat by FIFA. FIFA has also endorsed the supply of 1,500 uniforms to be used by volunteers during the matches of the cadet World Cup scheduled to begin from October 24. And the 1,500 uniforms would be re-distributed to the eight hosting sub-seats from this week. FIFA has also ruled that only the two captains would be escorted into the playing pitch before matches unlike in previous competitions where all the 22 players are escorted to the field before the commencement of matches. http://www.tribune.com.ng/30092009/news/sports5.html |
NIGERIAN international, Nwankwo Kanu has emerged as a surprise transfer target for A-League side, Gold Coast United which is hoping to land the Portsmouth striker on a guest contract in December. Kanu, one of Nigeria’s most famous football exports, has started only one game so far this season for Paul Hart’s struggling side, although he has made a further five appearances as a substitute in the Premier League. At 33 years of age, the striker’s lengthy career in England, which started when he joined Arsenal from Inter Milan in 1999, is in danger of winding down and he is only contracted to Portsmouth until the end of the season. Now Gold Coast boss, Miron Bleiberg, hopes to recruit the Super Eagles captain for a nine-game spell on a guest contract in the A-League. “He’s still a potent force, still very inventive and still able to make a huge impact at a high level, so he would be a coup for the A-League,” Bleiberg said, as quoted by the Portsmouth News. “I feel he’d be a good fit for us. “His fitness wouldn’t be a problem and he would appeal to crowds and excite people. Whether it will happen or not I don’t know, things are at an early stage but we are keen to pursue it and see where it takes us.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/30092009/news/sports4.html |
NIGERIAN international, Taye Taiwo says the costly equaliser conceded by the Super Eagles against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in Abuja on September 6 in a 2010 World Cup qualifier showed that things were not working well with the team, insisting that the Eagles had all along lacked genuine team ethic. The Olympique Marseille defender, however, believes that despite the dicey situation Nigeria finds itself in the qualifying series, the country’s World Cup bid is not over yet. “We’ve lacked a genuine team ethic until now. That goal in the game against Tunisia was the perfect example of what’s not working,” Taiwo told FIFA.com in an exclusive chat. “We need to play together and defend together,” he explained. “The forwards have to help out more defensively and the defenders need to stay concentrated until the final minute.” The Eagles were on the verge of claiming the maximum three points against the Tunisian Eagles in Abuja leading 2-1 until the 89th minute when the Tunisians equalised to end the game 2-2. The result has now put Nigeria’s qualification for the first World Cup to hold in Africa in the hands of others to decide. “Everything is still possible. We need to win those two matches. Tunisia will be playing the same teams and we can hope that they ( Carthage Eagles) slip up. Whatever happens, if we don’t win these two games, then we have no chance. “The World Cup isn’t over for us and the two games to come will be crucial, for the supporters and the country. We need to be optimistic and not ask ourselves any questions.” Speaking against the insinuation that most of the Eagles are not patriotic enough, Taiwo said all the players were always proud of playing for Nigeria, submitting that, “We’re all immensely proud to play for the national team.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/30092009/news/sports3.html |

THERE was pandemonium at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammad Airport, on Friday, as a group of armed robbers did not only beat all security checks at the airport, but succeeded in robbing one of the bureau de change operators. According to an eyewitness account, the bureau de change operator, who was the son of a businessman based in Agege (names withheld), was said to have collected about N1 millon from a bank at Ikeja. Unknown to the victim, while he was heading back to the airport to take the money to the bureau de change, opposite Arik Air Corporate Headquarters at the airport, he was trailed by the robbers. The robbers, on getting to the AP filling station, very close to the police station, at the airport, opened fire with the aim of dispossessing the victim of the money. The gunshots from robbers, alerted the policemen who, at once, responded and in the process, the victim was shot by the robbers who eventually escaped. Throughout the period the gun duel lasted, activities around the local airport came to halt, as everyone ran for safety. As at the time of filing this report, the victim was said to be receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ikeja. When the Nigerian Tribune called the airport police image maker, Anele Samuel, on phone, he confirmed the report, saying investigation was on to arrest the robbers. He, however, said that the over N1 million that was recovered from the victim was in the police custody until the investigations were concluded. http://www.tribune.com.ng/28092009/news/news10.html |
EKITI State government, at the weekend, declared that it recently discovered that about N27 million was being paid monthly to over 2,000 ghost workers in the state local government service. The chairman of the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Chief Femi Akinyemi, who made the disclosure during an interaction with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, said that the ghost workers were detected during a recent personnel audit carried out in all the 16 local government areas in the state. He also explained that the screening exercised was embarked upon in July which involved over 24,000 workers in the service of the local governments. He disclosed that 600 people were discovered not to have certificates, 400 failed to participate in the exercise and that another 700 workers were discovered to have had irregular promotions, advancements and conversions, as well as overstay on their jobs. Akinyemi further said that about 300 were detected to have been collecting salaries from three different local government areas simultaneously, while others were said to be collecting salaries monthly from three departments in the same local government. “In fact, during the exercise, we were also able to detect scores of primary six certificate holders, who were promoted to levels 13 and 14 at the Local Government Service Commission. “Besides, we also discovered that some were collecting salaries in three departments within the same local government area, while some were collecting salaries from three or more local governments in the state.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/28092009/news/news9.html |
THE General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, on Sunday, said since Nigeria got independence in 1960, its economy had been oscillating between numbing distress and fatal anaemia. Kumuyi, while speaking during his sermon at an interdenominational church Service as part of the programmes to mark the 49th Independence Day celebration on October 1, held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, urged leaders and the followers to resist corruption at all levels, saying corruption had been responsible for Nigeria woes. “Nigeria’s economy has hardly enjoyed stable health since independence. It has oscillated between numbing distress and fatal anaemia. “The global meltdown is not responsible for our economic maladies because before meltdown begins, Nigeria’s economy was in practical terms, in sickening pulp,” he stated. Kumuyi, speaking further, said even though there was hope in the present leadership of the country, the future wealth and health of the nation was dependent on the collective willingness to repent from the wrong doings. He tasked the Federal Government on the need to diversify the nation’s economy, while expressing worry on the neglect of agriculture that used to be the country’s source of economy. Pastor Kumuyi said the fact that only 40 per cent of Nigerians had access to electricity “bears the tell-tale of collapse of the existing infrastructure that marks years of a feeble economy in the country.” Senate President, David Mark, in his speech urged Nigerians to be prepared to take away corruption and bring about honesty and justice into governance in the country. He spoke on the need for unity through religious tolerance, expressing hope that the National Assembly would continue to work with the executive arm of the government in delivering the dividend of democracy to the people. http://www.tribune.com.ng/28092009/news/news5.html |
