Teachers in both public primary and secondary schools in Osun State are ready for showdown with the state government as they declared an indefinite strike action to press home the implementation of 27.5 per cent Teachers Peculiar Allowances (TPA). The teachers said that their action was in compliance with the directive of the national secretariat of the union. In a statement by the state Chairman and Secretary of the union, Alhaji Saka Adesiyan and Mr. Wale Oyeniyi respectively in Osogbo, on Thursday, the teachers said that the union resumed the strike it had earlier suspended. Saturday Tribune gathered that the union had suspended the action to allow the government implement payment according to the scheme. The teachers suspended the strike in March, 2009 following the intervention of Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola who promised that the state government would effect the payment from June, 2009, subject to availability of fund and improved economy. “Since then, the state government has reportedly been unable to implement the payment of the increase in salary and allowances to teachers in the state.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/26092009/news/news9.html |

A Senior Special Assistant to the Niger State governor on Chieftaincy Matters, Alhaji Awaisu Wana Giwa and two others have been arrested by the police in Minna for allegedly circulating inciting documents. Others arrested were Mr Bala Daniya Kuta and a Senior Lecturer in Islamic Matters at the state College of Education, Alhaji Kawu. According to Saturday Tribune investigations, Awaisu Giwa and Bala Kuta were nabbed for serialising and circulating a document that warned the state government from embarking on any attempt to remove the traditional ruler of the Gbagyis. A senior police officer told the Saturday Tribune that the duo warned, in the petition, that they, as Gbagyis, would do everything within their powers to resist such actions. “We will not sit down and watch the government turn us to strangers in our land,” the petition by the suspects, according to the police, further read. The arrest of Alhaji Kawu, it was learnt, was in connection with the circulation of another document which the police said was against the government’s hosting of the National Festival of Arts and Culture in Minna. The state government is hosting the 10-day event from October 3. Saturday Tribune further learnt that a search carried out on the residences of the suspects led to the unearthing of the documents, one of which had a fictitious name as its author. As for Kawu, it was gathered that several copies of the documents were also found in his car. Other inciting documents were allegedly found in the residences of Awaisu Giwa and Bala Daniya, the police source said. Police spokesman, ASP Richard Oguche, who confirmed the development, said that the trio had been charged to court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, injurious falsehood and inciting public disturbances contrary to sections 97, 114 and 393 of the penal code. |

Tragic end: Trailer crushes pregnant woman, husband, friend From PAUL ORUDE, Bauchi Thursday, September 24, 2009 •Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section A pregnant woman in labour, her husband and a friend of the family have been crushed to death by a trailer along Bauchi-Jos Road. The woman, 27, was being taken to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi from their home in Wunti Dada along Jos Road for delivery when the unfortunate incident happened. The deceased, Ruth Edei and her unborn child, a boy died instantly while her husband, Joseph, a pastor and lecturer in the Mechanical Department of the Federal Polytechnic died later in the hospital. The couple left behind a two-year-old daughter, Marvel. The other occupant of the ill-fated car, Toyota Carina, Mrs Salman Ogbeba, wife of a renowned pastor, Emmanuel Ogbeba also died on the spot. The incident which happened in the early hours of Tuesday, has thrown residents of the Bauchi State capital into deep sorrow and anguish. “In fact, mummy was called by the pastor to accompany them to the hospital when his wife entered labour. We did not know that it was the last time we will see her,” Jerry Ogbeba, son of Salman told Daily Sun. His mother was a retired nurse who served the Bauchi State Government for 35 years before retirement. “She was a God-fearing woman, gentle and kind Christian, mother and wife,” he said. When Daily Sun reporter visited their house in Wunikti Dada, sympathisers including Pastor Charles Yohanna of the Faith Revival Ministries and other men of God were seen consoling Pastor Ogbeba, who also lost his second son three mouths ago. The Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Commission in the state, Albert Moor blamed the accident on the recklessness of the trailer driver who, he said, was now in police custody. Daily Sun gathered that the accident happened because the trailer driver was overtaking dangerously and rammed into the Toyota carrying the victims. “It happened around 5 am. It is very unfortunate. The case is still with the police and we are carrying out investigation,” he said. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2009/sept/24/national-24-09-2009-001.htm

NANS appeals to FG on ASUU strike Yekini Jimoh, Ilorin -25.09.2009 THE National Associa-tion of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the Federal Government to return to the negotiation table with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to curb the decadence in the education sector. In a press statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune, on Wednesday, in Ilorin, Kwara State, the national vice-president of the body, Musbau Esinrogunjo, reminded the Federal Government that the strike portended danger for the nation. Esinrogunjo noted that having been forced to abandon their schools in pursuit of their academics, the future of the Nigerian students was daily becoming more bleak, as every passing day pointed to a state of hopelessness for the millions of students. He said the recalcitrance of the government to go back to the negotiation table was posing serious threats to their education and urged its negotiating team to resume talks with the union. He also urged the government to look into various grouses of ASUU “as a matter of urgency,” with a view to resolving them within the shortest time. http://www.tribune.com.ng/25092009/news/news11.html |
Ladoja will be Oyo gov again - Igboho 25.09.2009 A supporter of Senator Rashidi Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, has said the former governor will govern the state again. Igboho said this recently at a press conference held in Osogbo, Osun State, stating that “Ladoja is coming back as governor of Oyo State. “God has hands in his return to the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan. He has ordained it and he will fulfill it. Senator Ladoja will come back as governor of the state. “Remember that he was illegally impeached, but God allowed his reinstatement. God, who did it then, will still do it again.” The political activist also eulogised the late human rights activists, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, saying that while alive, Fawehinmi fought against cheating and oppression under any guise within the political system. Oyo govt defends sack of 7 lecturers - Appoints 1,086 new teachers By Adebayo Waheed and Kehinde Adio - 24.09.2009 OYO State government, on Wednesday, defended the sack of the seven striking staffers of the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, saying it had nothing to do with the strike. The Commissioner for Education, Professor Taoheed Adedoja, while briefing newsmen after the weekly state executive council meeting in Ibadan, said that government was not aware of the sack of the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Mr. Babatunde Dosunmu. He said that the governing councils of the state-owned institutions, had the responsibility to protect the interest of the over 17,000 students in the schools. He said that government was aware of the events in Oyo, but said government was yet to receive report from the governing council. While noting the institutions were autonomous, the commissioner said they did what was right in the best interest of the students and their parents. According to him, the state government was not out to victimise any of the striking workers of the institutions. He said the striking workers had resumed, while lectures had begun in earnest. Meanwhile, the state government has approved N349 million for the construction of resource centres in seven local government areas of the state. HOWEVER, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), on Wednesday, issued letters of appointments to about 1,086 teachers to join the public primary school teaching service in the state. According to the chairman of the board, Professor Soji Adejumo, the new appointees were employed under the Federal Government supportive teachers scheme for the state, adding that they would serve the state for two years after which their appointments would be reviewed based on performance. While presenting the appointment letters to the new teachers, Professor Adejumo stated that over 4,000 National Certificate of Education (NCE) holders applied for the job in the state, and were scrutinised and interviewed by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the National Teacher Institute, before their appointment by the state government. “So, their appointments were based on merit, irrespective of their states of origin,” he said, adding that the state government would treat them as full-fledged teachers in the state, as he urged them to put in their best and work as full-time teachers. http://www.tribune.com.ng/24092009/news/news5.html |
