I won't lose sleep over 2010 W/Cup ticket - Kanu By Olawale Olaniyan - 23.09.2009 SUPER Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu has said playing at the 2010 World Cup is not a do-or-die affair for him but, would rather be a bonus that would add to his credentials as a player, just as he appealed to Nigerians for maximum support towards winning the remaining World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Kenya. The Portsmouth of England forward reputed to be Nigeria's most decorated footballer in history, in an interview monitored in Ibadan pointed out that he would remain focused to put in his best for his fatherland. “It doesn’t matter for me but I think by now, I ’ve really done well for myself. If it (World Cup ticket) comes, it is a very big bonus but if it did not, there is no problem. The most important thing is to qualify for all these competitions, the Nations Cup and the World Cup," said Kanu who featured at France '98 and Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup finals. The former Arsenal player, who came on as a substitute in the recent 2-2 draw against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in Abuja, then called for prayers that would enable the Super Eagles to pick the World Cup ticket against all odds. “I call on Nigerians to support us and pray for us: Even in bad times, they should support us, that is the only way a true and good supporter should be," said the two-time African Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1999. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/sports4.html |
World Cup qualifiers: Nigeria's major headache is Kenya - Oliseh By Olawale Olaniyan - 23.09.2009 FORMER Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh has said the Harambee Stars of Kenya will not be an easy side to beat for the Eagles in their last 2010 World Cup qualifier billed for Nairobi, after the disappointing 2-2 draw against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia which has put Nigeria's hope of playing in the 2010 World Cup in jeopardy. The former Juventus of Italy player while speaking on a local radio station urged the Eagles to forget about what happened in Abuja and focus their attention on the remaining two qualifiers. “I believe the major match we have at hand is against Kenya and we must prove our worth during the game if we want to be in South Africa next year. I don't envisage much problem in the home game against Mozambique but the last game in Kenya will decide our fate. “In football, you never say never until it’s over and we just have to be focused to surmount the task ahead even though, we also need some element of luck to pick the ticket at the expense of Tunisia," said the Atlanta '96 Olympics gold medallist. Nigeria is trailing Tunisia with two points on the table, just as Nigerians are praying fervently for the Carthage Eagles to lose one of their remaining games against Mozambique and Kenya. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/sports3.html |
Eto'o demands Barca pay-off 23.09.2009 INTER Milan striker, Samuel Eto'o is demanding three million euros from Barcelona after his summer transfer to the San Siro. The amount represents 15 per cent of the 20 million euro (£18 million) fee which the Italian side paid Barcelona in August. The deal also saw Inter's Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic join European champion, Barcelona for 46 million euros. If the two parties fail to reach a settlement the matter could end up in court. Eto'o bases his demand on a Spanish FA rule, which states that a player has the right to 15 per cent of the amount of his transfer fee to another Spanish club. Barcelona, however, insists it owes Eto'o nothing because the rule is an agreement between Spanish clubs http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/sports2.html |
Show your leadership qualities - Moyes challenges Yobo 23.09.2009 YoboEVERTON manager, David Moyes has challenged Nigerian international, Joseph Yobo to show his leadership qualities and prove he is the right man to captain the Toffees in Phil Neville’s absence. The Nigerian defender has been Neville’s full-time deputy since Alan Stubbs left for Derby County in January 2008 and, initially wore the armband for the first time during a game at Pride Park which Everton won 2-0 in October 2007. With Neville likely to be out until the end of November after damaging his posterior cruciate ligament, many would expect that Yobo – who is one of Everton’s longest-serving players – will automatically lead the team. Certainly his ‘reign’ could not have got off to a better start, with the Toffees beating AEK Athens 4-0 and following up with a comfortable 3-0 dismissal of Blackburn Rovers last Sunday and Yobo getting on the scoresheet in each game. Moyes, however, wants to see how Yobo follow Neville’s example by getting into the thick of the action when things are not going Everton’s way but, given that he captains his country, he sees no reason why the 29-year-old will not rise to the challenge. “Joseph has to play with maturity and responsibility,” said Moyes. “When he does that, he is a top player. “He is captain of Nigeria, so it is something that he should be able to take. “But in the Premier League, you have got to lead by example. That’s the one thing Phil Neville always does. He takes responsibility, he is at the front of everything. “Whether it be training, the responsibility for the game or organising the players, he’s right there. That’s why I say he has been a terrific captain for Everton. “Now we want to see if Joe can step forward and do that. Whether he does it permanently is something I will decide on.” For his part, Yobo – who is known to his team-mates as ‘The Chief – is happy with the way things have turned around for Everton in the past seven days and he feels there are signs of the club clicking into top gear. What’s more, he also knows there is a terrific opportunity for the squad to make significant progress on three fronts in the next few weeks, starting tonight in the Carling Cup against Hull City. After that, Everton has Premier League assignments against Portsmouth, Stoke, Wolves and Bolton, with a trip to Minsk to face Bate Borisov in the Europa League squeezed in the middle, and Yobo is confident the early season blip will be left behind. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/sports1.html

Strike: Rep calls on FG, ASUU to resume talk Bola Badmus, Abuja - 23.09.2009 THE Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been called upon to return to negotiation table and resolve their differences in the interest of the nation and the students, considered as leaders of tomorrow. Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Education, Honourable George Jolaoye, made the call while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday in a telephone chat. The lawmaker stated that education was quite important to the development and growth of the country and urged both the Federal Government and ASUU to cooperate, for academic work to resume immediately in the universities. Hon. Jolaoye, who recalled the intervention of his committee in bringing the ongoing ASUU strike to an end in the interest of the nation and students, argued that closure of universities for a period longer than necessary would do more harm than good. Jolaoye representing Ayedire, Iwo and Ola- Oluwa Federal Constituency of Osun State, said that the Federal Government could not be blamed alone for the rot in the education sector but should be seen as a collective guilt. However, he noted that “it is important to note that the government of President Umaru Yar’ Adua places priority attention on education as part of his seven-point agenda and had been trying its best towards the realisation of Vision 20- 2020.” Hon. Jolaoye promised that the House of Representatives was resolved to continuously meeting with both the Federal Government and ASUU, so as to ensure that agreement reached between the two parties were no longer breached in the overall interest of the country. “It is our duty to ensure that agreements between both the Federal Government and ASUU are no longer allowed to be observed in breach and this is to see that our university system runs smoothly and efficiently”, he said. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/news14.html |
We ’ll not compromise justice system - Army Chris Agbambu, Abuja - 23.09.2009 The Nigerian Army has declared that it will not compromise its justice system, even as it strives to improve on its relationship with the civil populace. The declaration of the commitment of the Nigerian Army to the military justice system was made in Abuja by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazzau, during his investiture as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). According to the COAS, the need for the public to have a better understanding of the military operation and public conduct had become necessary going by the new policy thrust based on justice and the rule of law. The quest for better relationship with the civil populace would not lead to a compromise of its justice system. “We are using this opportunity to solicit the assistance of the NIPR towards a better appreciation of our roles in nation building. This has become necessary because of the fact that we have ventured into politics in the past,” he said. While he cited the instance of the recent conviction of the 27 soldiers that protested non-payment of their Peacekeeping operations allowance, the COAS, said that the Army had embarked on organising seminars and workshops to bridge the gap and improve the Army and civilian relationship. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/news18.html |
89 million people head for extreme poverty by 2010 - World Bank - 23.09.2009 THE World Bank says low-income countries will remain under the shadow of the global financial crisis for a long period, estimating cases of extreme poverty to rise in 2010. In a paper prepared for the upcoming G-20 meeting in Pittsburgh, United States, the World Bank said that as a result of the crisis, 89 million additional people would live in extreme poverty, on less than 1.25 dollar a day, by the end of 2010. The paper was published on the web site of the World Bank on Tuesday, ahead of the G-20 meeting, which holds between tomorrow and Saturday. The global financial crisis was triggered by sub-prime mortgage facilities in the U.S., with the collapse of its top financial institutions, such as the Lehman Brothers in 2008, sending ripples across the world economy. “The global recession has also put at risk 11.6 billion U.S. dollars of core spending in areas such as education, health, infrastructure and social protection in the most vulnerable countries,’’ the World Bank states. The paper, entitled “Protecting Progress: The Challenge Facing Low-Income Countries in the Global Recession,” said the global economy had shown tentative signs of recovery, but 43 low-income developing countries were still suffering the consequences of the global recession. The countries were not listed. According to the paper, the economic conditions of the low-income countries highlight the need to increase support to the poorest countries dealing with economic volatility and crisis. http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/news8.html |

Kaduna SSG kidnapped, captors demand N40m - He is not kidnapped; we sent him on an assignment - Govt From Hassan Ibrahim, and Chris Agbambu with Agency Reports - 23.09.2009 THE captors of the Secretary to the Kaduna State government, Mr. Waje Yayok, are asking for a N40 million ransom for his release, his relations said on Tuesday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Yayok was kidnapped on Monday night at Manchok, his hometown, in the Kaura Local Government Area, where he had travelled to for the Sallah break. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Tambari Mohammed, confirmed the kidnap, but said that it was regarded as a case of a missing person for now. Mohammed told NAN on telephone that the police were on top of the situation. A member of the Yayok family and the Danmasanin Manchock, Malam Shehu Abui, also confirmed that Yayok was kidnapped on Monday night by unknown persons. Abui, a former Editor-in-Chief of NAN, said the kidnappers were demanding N40 million as ransom from the state government before they could release Yayok. Kaduna State governor, Dr. Namadi Sambo, told newsmen shortly after his visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, that he would speak later in the day. But later, in a a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Alhaji Umar Sani, the government said it had only sent Yayok on an assignment to the southern part of the state with a large sum of money when the alleged kidnap report started making the rounds. The statement read: “we have been inundated with enquiries as to the whereabouts of the SSG of Kaduna State, Mr. Waje Yayok, over a case of abduction. “These enquiries necessitated that we respond appropriately to these rumours in order to set the records straight. “While it is true that the SSG was on official assignment to the southern part of Kaduna, we are yet to get in contact with him over his supposed location. We believe he will get in contact with us soon. “However, the gravity and the intensity of the rumours require us to take steps to ensure that everything is in order. The security agencies have been detailed of the place, the nature of the assignment and all his contact details to enable them trace his whereabouts and douse the tension created by such rumours. “Members of the press, in line with the internationally accepted standards that a person cannot be declared missing until after 48 hours and because the rumours started this morning we shall address you properly very soon on the matter. “However, the essence of this is to keep you informed on the situation, by tomorrow (when) the picture will become clearer.” Meanwhile activities continued in Kaduna but some government officials were seen in groups discussing the sad development. Yayok’s house in Banawa, Kaduna, is currently being guarded by men of Operation Yaki, a special security outfit, and other security agencies. Speaking on the issue, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Emmanuel Ojukwu, said that the SSG had gone out on Monday night to distribute his daughter’s wedding cards, but did not return. The wedding is scheduled to hold on October 10. He said that on Tuesday morning, some unknown callers called his family, claiming that they had kidnapped the SSG, and demanded for a ransom of N40 million. The force spokesman, however, revealed that the police had spread their dragnet all over Kaduna State to track down the kidnappers. According to him, “the police high command has ordered serious stop and search of vehicles in Kaduna while other searches are still going on.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/23092009/news/news1.html |
