Health / Doctor Performs Brain Surgery On Wrong Person by olamariamjonez(m): 7:55pm On Mar 02, 2018
There has been an outpouring of rage in the social media after a neurosurgeon at Kenya’s largest hospital performed brain surgery on the wrong patient.

The Kenyatta National Hospital, which admitted the horrific error has suspended the doctor, as well as two nurses and an anaesthetist, according to a statement on Friday.

Health Minister Sicily Kariuki also suspended the Chief operating officer of the hospital, Lily Koros, over the blunder. Lily Koros had suspended the four medics.

It was the latest scandal to hit the hospital in recent weeks, after allegations of staff sexually assaulting patients, and the theft of a baby.

An investigation by the Daily Nation newspaper revealed that two men had been taken to the hospital last Sunday.

The two men were wheeled into the hospital unconscious. One needed head surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain, while the other only required nursing and medication to heal a trauma swelling in his head, medically known as closed head injury.

Hours into the surgery doctors discovered there was no blood clot in the brain of their patient, and that they were in fact operating on the wrong man, the newspaper reported.

The hospital’s chief operating officer, Lily Koros, issued a statement announcing the suspension of four medics who were at work on that night. The hospital also expressed regret over the incident.

Sports / Russia 2018 World Cup: NFF Seeks $2.8m For Super Eagles by olamariamjonez(m): 7:36pm On Mar 02, 2018
The President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, on Friday said the federation wants to raise $2.8 million for the Super Eagles’ participation at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Pinnick, who disclosed this during the commissioning of Western Nigeria Football Forum office located at the famous Cocoa House in Ibadan, said good financial support was necessary for the team.

“We have to support them to succeed. We cannot afford to fail at the FIFA World Cup,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that football stakeholders in the South Western zone of Nigeria organised the Forum in collaboration with the DAWN Commission, to revive the region’s football fortunes.

The NFF president said the federation has been monitoring the performance of Super Eagles players in their respective clubs.

“For instance, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, Kelechi Iheanacho and others are being monitored in their clubs to ensure they are doing well.

“Also, we have assisted Oghenekaro Otebo to move to UD Las Palmas in Spain to ensure that he plays in a strong league where he can play against world-class players like Lionel Messi,” he said.

Pinnick, while unveiling the new office, described the innovation as the future of football in Nigeria.

“I must commend the emergence of Western Nigeria Football League. It will form the future of Nigerian football. It is a pacesetter for other regions and it will assist in discovery of new stars,” he said.

Pinnick said the South West zone which produced the likes of Segun Odegbami, Muda Lawal, Felix Owolabi and Sam Ojebode has again shown it is always the pacesetter.

“Ibadan, the headquarters of South West, is noted for being the first in the establishment of television, radio and university. This is another first the zone has recorded,” he said.

While congratulating those behind the move, the NFF president promised to furnish the new office for the Forum.

Sports / Brazilian Superstar Neymar Goes Under The Knife, Misses Real Clash by olamariamjonez(m): 10:35pm On Feb 28, 2018
Brazilian superstar Neymar will undergo surgery on his fractured foot in Brazil at the end of this week, ruling the world's most expensive footballer out of Paris Saint-Germain's do-or-die Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old suffered a hairline fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot as well as a twisted ankle late in PSG's 3-0 win over Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

PSG said Wednesday that Rodrigo Lasmar, the surgeon with the Brazilian national squad, will carry out the operation.

On Tuesday, the Brazilian's father had claimed the player would be out for "at least six weeks".

Speaking to ESPN in Brazil before PSG's announcement, Neymar Senior said: "PSG know that they will not be able to count on Neymar for the upcoming matches. His treatment will last six to eight weeks, whether there is an operation or not."

PSG coach Unai Emery had said earlier that "no decision" had been taken on whether Neymar would require surgery and that there remained a "small chance" of getting him back in time to face Real next Tuesday, March 6.

PSG lost 3-1 in the first leg in Spain two weeks ago and are in danger of being knocked out of the competition in the last 16 for the second season running.

Neymar appeared to be in tears as he was stretchered off the field at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.

Brazilian newspaper Globo Esporte claimed the former Barcelona player would be sidelined until May while, if his father's estimate was correct, Neymar would not return before the semi-final stage of the Champions League in late April.

Crime / Nigerian Army kills 3 kidnappers in rescue bid, loses one soldier by olamariamjonez(m): 12:41am On Feb 28, 2018
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of three kidnap suspects and a soldier in Kogi during the rescue of oil magnate Alhaji Momoh Otinau Jimoh, on Tuesday.

The spokesman of the Command Army Records, Lokoja, Capt. Weri Finikumor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone in Lokoja that some of the suspected kidnappers have been arrested and helping the military in its investigations.

Finikumor assured residents that operation “exercise cat race” was ongoing to curtail criminality and boost security in the state.

He said that the army would make details of the exercise public as soon as it was concluded.

The soldier and three suspected kidnappers died in Okene area of Kogi on Feb. 26 during a gun duel between some soldiers and a gang of kidnappers.

It was gathered that the gun duel ensued when the soldiers were attempting to rescue an oil magnate, Alhaji Momoh Otinau Jimoh, from the suspected kidnappers that abducted him on Feb. 17.

Otinau, chairman of Always Petroleum and Gas, based in Okene was kidnapped in front of a mosque in the town, while relaxing with friends.

A relation of the kidnapped victim who has been negotiating with the kidnappers was said to have informed soldiers believed to be part of those prosecuting “exercise cat race” of his intention to go and drop a ransom for the kidnappers.

The soldiers then decided to follow him with the intention to rescue the victim and arrest the suspects.

This, however, proved fatal as the kidnappers on sighting the relation approaching the designated point with the armed soldiers immediately opened fire on them.

In the exchange of gun shots that followed, a soldier and three suspected kidnappers lost their lives while Otinau also sustained gunshot injury.

Politics / President Donald Trump Begins 2020 Re-election Campaign by olamariamjonez(m): 8:26pm On Feb 27, 2018
U.S. President Donald Trump has kicked off his 2020 presidential re-election campaign with the appointment of political strategist, Brad Parscale, as manager of his team.

Parscale, a digital expert critical to Trump’s 2016 victory was named on Tuesday to lead the Trump’s re-election team.

In a statement, the Trump campaign said it planned to use Parscale’s talent to help Republicans in the 2018 congressional elections in November as they try to hold on to control of the U.S. Congress.

Trump, 71, had already signaled plans to run for re-election, filing a letter of intent with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 20, 2017, the day he took office.

He frequently relives his improbable 2016 victory in speeches and interviews.

Parscale, 42, based in San Antonio, Texas, was the Trump campaign’s digital director in 2016 and had performed digital duties for Trump’s businesses, the Trump Organisation, before the campaign.

The campaign statement included supportive statements from Trump’s son, Eric Trump, and son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.

“Parscale is an amazing talent and was pivotal to our success in 2016. He has our family’s complete trust and is the perfect person to be at the helm of the campaign,” said Eric Trump.

Republicans face challenges in trying to retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

Typically, the party in control of the White House loses seats in the first election after a new president takes over.

Education / A Total Of 245,753 To Write Mock UTME 26 February, 2018 by olamariamjonez(m): 3:47pm On Feb 18, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said the much anticipated conduct of the 2018 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Mock UTME) will hold on Feb. 26.

The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 245,753 of the 1,652,795 candidates that registered for this year’s UTME are expected to write the test.

“We are happy to announce to the public that the board has concluded arrangement for the conduct of the mock UTME, slated for Monday, February 26

“This is irrespective of the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of non-academic unions of federal universities nation wide.

“Candidates will soon be informed on when to print notifications for the examination and in addition, notifications will be sent through e-mails and text messages on the schedules of their examination,” Benjamin said.

He said that the examination will be hitch free because the board has successfully reduced incidences of malfunctioning of computers by electronically integrating the systems to see their functionality and effectiveness through link tests.

“What this means is that, at the end of the exercise, whatever system that is not seen will not be used for the mock examination.

“The 2018 exercise sold a total of 1, 966,918 candidate generating profiles.

“In previous examinations this number of candidates would have paid for the forms but through our efficient and effective system of ensuring that candidates do not waste resources, we decided to introduce the profile generating regime.

“By this method, candidates will first have to generate personal profiles before proceeding to obtain pins, in between which they are open to deciding whether to go ahead to pay for the registration documents or otherwise,” Benjamin explained.

Some students of the Benue State University have explained why they are unable to pay their school fees.

DAILY POST reports that students of the institution frustrated academic activities over management’s refusal to allow them have access to the examination hall over unpaid school fees. The authority consequently ordered the security to shut down the school till further notice.

However, when DAILY POST reporter approached some of the protesting students for comments, most of them blamed ‘snake’ for their inability to pay their fees.

“There’s no money anywhere, the little one I had was swallowed by snake,” he alleged while displaying a placard with the inscription, ‘snake swallowed our school fees.’

“I don’t want to spill over because this is my final exam. The management has to be considerate because of what the economy is saying. We will pay when the snake vomit the money,” Sure said as other students behind him chorus ‘yes’.

Another EXCO of the students union government, who would not want his name mentioned, said this was the first time students would be stopped from writing exams over unpaid fees.

Politics / Came To Condole Buhari Over The Loss Of Two Relatives, Not 2019 - APC Governors by olamariamjonez(m): 8:39pm On Feb 16, 2018
State Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday said their mission to Daura, Katsina state, was merely to condole President Muhammadu Buhari over the loss of two members of his extended family. The Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo, stated this when he fielded questions from newsmen after a closed door meeting with President Buhari at his private resident in Daura, on Friday.

He dismissed media reports that their mission to Daura was aimed at convincing the President to seek re-election in the forthcoming presidential election in 2019.

He said the governors also used the opportunity to commend the president for appointing Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as APC Chief Mediator.

The president had last week appointed Tinubu to reconcile aggrieved members of the party. “We are yet to discuss that.

That would be in next the meeting where we will discuss whether we want to support him to run or not. “But for now we came on the issue of the death of his two relatives and to commend him for action taken on Tinubu as a conciliator,’’ he said.

Also speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa, said they were in Daura to also sympathise with the president over the involvement of his son, Yusuf, in a ghastly auto-accident and the death of his two relatives.

Technology Market / Whatsapp Launches New Business App by olamariamjonez(m): 8:15pm On Feb 15, 2018
Although WhatsApp is based in the United States, most of its billion-plus users live outside the northwestern hemisphere.

The majority of instant messaging subscribers live across South America, Asia, and Africa. Indeed, according to the Wall Street Journal, WhatsApp has over 200 million active monthly users in India, and 1.3 billion users worldwide.

Bought by Facebook in 2014 for USD 19 billion, WhatsApp includes many of the standard features of Facebook’s Messenger application and other social media platforms, such as Snapchat and Instagram.

However, WhatsApp’s strategy diverges from the pack: its low-data consuming communication allows its users to send messages and use less data than its competitors do. Additionally, it includes the “group chat” function, enabling users to integrate multiple themed conversations into a low-bandwidth framework. And for those concerned about privacy, WhatsApp advertises “end to end” encryption, promising its users absolute privacy – even from WhatsApp itself.

“I used WhatsApp to plan my entire wedding,” says Zineb, 32, a Casablanca-native living in France at the time. She used the application to coordinate with family members, caterers, and musicians – all from her apartment in Grenoble. For her, WhatsApp meant more than simply social media: she used it as a business and administrative tool.

WhatsApp has outflanked its competitors in the emerging markets, especially across the consentient of Africa. In Zimbabwe, for example, WhatsApp accounted for nearly half of the country’s internet traffic. According to Quartz, 44% of all mobile internet usage went to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s success has caused tensions with various mobile companies, that believe the internet sensation is cutting into their revenue.

Foreign Affairs / I Will Not Resign, I Am Being Victimised – Jacob Zuma by olamariamjonez(m): 6:26pm On Feb 14, 2018
Jacob Zuma has refused to heed calls to step down as South African president, denouncing moves by the ruling African Nation Congress (ANC) party to remove him following a string of damaging corruption scandals.

The ANC formally asked him to resign on Tuesday.“I am being victimised here. I think there has been a misinterpretation,” Zuma said in an attempt to present his side of the story.

Zuma however indicated he would accept the outcome of a parliamentary vote of no confidence against him, which has been scheduled for Thursday. During more than a week of negotiations with the ANC’s key decision-making body, Zuma said that “nobody provided the reasons, nobody has been able to provide me with what I have done.”

Zuma denied any wrongdoing over the corruption allegations of recent years. “There is no problem. There has never been a problem,” he said in the televised remarks.

The ANC “will regret the crisis they have caused,” he said, adding he wsa planning to make a formal statement on the calls for his resignation later on Wednesday.

During the negotiations with the ANC leadership, Zuma said he had in principle agreed to step down but presented “a package” of demands that included him staying in power for several more months. The ANC didn’t accept those conditions, said Zuma. “I am open to further discussion, but they are rushing [into a vote of no confidence],” he said, adding that he was unjustly “portrayed as this person who is defying the leadership.”
