Scores of security men including officials of the Department of State Security (DSS) led by DCP Operations, Lagos State Police Command, Mr A. Mohammed, have invaded the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) office, Ikeja Branch.

The siege followed a threat by the NBA led by its Chairman, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, to call out members on a protest tomorrow to coincide with President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the policemen numbering about 50 were armed with an invitation from the Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgal Imohimi, for the NBA boss.

The letter with Ref No. AR:3000/LS/XS/ADM.2/Vol.27/ is entitled, “Invitation Letter, Re: Case of Threat to Public Peace /Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace”.

It reads: “This office is investigating the above mentioned case reported through a petition to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Ikeja.

“In furtherance to my investigation, you are requested to report to the undersigned on the 28th of March, 2018 by 7.00 p.m. through O/C “X” Squad, who has been detailed by the Commissioner of Police to investigate the case. Your co-operation in this regard will be highly appreciated please.”

Spain’s prosecutor says it is seeking a five-year jail sentence and a fine of four million euros (£3.5 million) for former football player Xabi Alonso over accusations of tax fraud.

The prosecutor said in a statement on Wednesday that Alonso was accused of defrauding the Spanish state some two million euros between 2010 and 2012.

The prosecutor called for the same sentence to be applied to Alonso’s financial advisor Ivan Azcuenaga and the administrator of consultancy shell company, Ignasi Casanova.

Xabier Alonso began his career at Real Sociedad, the main team of his home province Gipuzkoa. After a brief loan period at Eibar, he was appointed as team captain of Real Socieded by then-manager John Toshack.

He moved to Liverpool in August 2004 for £10.5 million and won the UEFA Champions League in his first season, under manager Rafael Benítez, scoring the equalising goal in the Final against Milan.

A dialogue sticker that employs satirical approach to address certain key societal issues has sparked trends on different social media platforms.

The ‘Ugo Jesse stickers’ which has got the attention of many Nigerians as well as foreigners is designed by Nigerian graphics designer Ugochukwu Jesse.

The stickers aims to tackle issues such as health, women empowerment, social justice and child welfare, political awareness, human rights and human cooperation.

The comic stickers, distinct by their playful and colourful look and deep dialogues, are already generating conversations on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Speaking with our correspondent, Jesse said that the stickers are designed to create conversations around issues that people deem too serious to debate about on social media.

He explained that this prompted him to design the stickers in ‘comic’ form, with characters that the average person could relate with, but with deep conversations that make people reflect.

“The messages are designed to help people, especially the younger generation that spends a bulk of its time on social media, learn about the things that affect the shape of the society.

“I share my messages because they are so many things we learn day in, day out and one can only grow when knowledge is passed properly.”

Facebook shares plunged Monday as the social media giant faced an onslaught of criticism at home and abroad over revelations that a firm working for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign harvested and misused data on 50 million members.

On Wall Street, Facebook shares skidded 6.8 percent amid concerns about pressure for new regulations that could hurt its business model.

The share plunge erased $5billion from the net worth of Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg today.

Calls for investigations came on both sides of the Atlantic after Facebook responded to the explosive reports of misuse of its data by suspending the account of Cambridge Analytica, a British firm hired by Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar and Republican John Kennedy called for Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg to appear before Congress, along with the CEOs of Google and Twitter.

The two lawmakers said the companies “have amassed unprecedented amounts of personal data” and that the lack of oversight “raises concerns about the integrity of American elections as well as privacy rights.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Monday injected 210 million dollars into the inter-bank Foreign Exchange Market, in its bid to sustain liquidity in the foreign exchange market.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor in a statement said that the move would ensure the continuous availability of foreign exchange to customers.

Giving a breakdown, Okoroafor said that the bank offered 100 million dollars to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, while the Small and Medium Enterprises segment received 55 million dollars.

He said also that customers requiring foreign exchange for invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), among others, were also allocated 55 million dollars.

Okoroafor reassured the public that the bank would continue to intervene in the interbank foreign exchange market in line with its desire to sustain liquidity in the market and maintain stability.

He also said that the steps taken so far by the apex bank in the management of foreign exchange was paying off, as reflected by reduction in the country’s import bills and accretion to its foreign reserves.

The CBN also recently injected 210 million dollars into the Wholesale segment of the foreign exchange market.

Meanwhile, the naira continued its stability in the foreign exchange market, exchanging at an average of N360 to a dollar in the Bureau de Change segment of the market.

Ride services company, Uber today suspended its autonomous vehicle programme after its self-driving sport utility vehicle, killed a woman on the street, in Arizona.

The 49 year-old woman was identified as Elaine Herzberg. She died from her injuries in a hospital, police said.

The accident in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe dealt a potential blow not only to Uber’s strategy but the eventual rollout of robot cars on public roads.

It was the first fatality from a self-driving vehicle.

The vehicles are being tested around the globe in a high-profile race by global automakers and tech companies expecting that autonomous vehicles will transform transportation and the ride services business.

The vehicle was in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel at the time of the accident, which occurred overnight Sunday to Monday, Tempe police said.

“The vehicle was traveling northbound … when a female walking outside of the crosswalk crossed the road from west to east when she was struck by the Uber vehicle,” police said in a statement.

Local television footage of the scene showed a crumpled bike and a Volvo XC90 SUV with a smashed-in front.

A pro-democracy group, Nigerian Intervention Movement (NIM) has urged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Dr Abduljihil Tafawa-Belewa, Co Chairman of the group made the call at the inaugural meeting of the NIM on Sunday in Abuja.

Tafawa-Belewa said that the acquisition of the PVCs was crucial in keying into the country’s electoral process with a view to electing credible leaders during the 2019 polls.

According to him, wrong leaders had emerged in the past due to the non-involvement of many in the electoral process.

He said that Nigeria was challenged with the issue of recycling leaders who had failed to provide the needed leadership.

Mr Khupikile Mlambo, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe says the country is expected to make up for all its debt arrears to major international lenders by September.

Mlambo disclosed this to reporters at the sideline of the Londo Investment summit.

He said that the country could return to international capital markets after the payment

“The ball is in our court, it is not with the IMF or the World Bank or the African Development Bank,” he said.

Zimbabwe had been shut out of international capital markets since it began defaulting on its external debt in 1999.

In 2016, Zimbabwe paid off 15 years’ worth of arrears to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is still years behind on payments to the World Bank and African Development Bank, however, hampering its ability to tap development financing from the two.

Jurgen Klopp has hit out at the Premier League after they sanctioned the switch of the Merseyside derby for a Saturday lunchtime kick-off in between their Champions League blockbuster with Manchester City.Liverpool's manager is furious that a fixture of such importance, which was originally scheduled for 2.15pm on Sunday, April 8, will now take place 26 hours earlier due to the second leg of their quarter-final being played on Tuesday, April 10.

The switch gives Liverpool more time to prepare for the trip to Manchester but Klopp is more concerned about the impact it has on preparations for the game at Goodison Park, which will have a significant bearing on whether Klopp's side can finish in the top four.

Manchester City also play on Saturday, April 7 – their clash with Manchester United could see them become champions – but Klopp sees the 5.30pm kick-off time as being more beneficial to Pep Guardiola's team and he is shocked that Liverpool have been handed this slot.

When asked about the possibility of squaring up to City, Klopp said: 'There will be a point when I am looking forward to that game but at the moment I am already angry because I heard a second ago the Premier League will put our game against Everton at 12.30 on the (middle) Saturday.
