TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by olarwarlay(m): 11:20pm On Jan 08, 2013
Uzodynmah: It was at the Lagos Consulate, Interview was for 8:30. After all the checks, i was interviewed by the white guy with cold blue eyes in window 7. He was basically regretting most students (maybe he didn't think them genuine) and visit visa applicants too (most didn’t look genuine), but was giving old people who were equally going on visiting too.
Me: Good morning (with a grin)
VO: Hello good morning, could you please pass you documents?
i passed them
VO: so what are you going to the US for?
ME: I'm to study for a masters degree in Technology Management at UB.
Vo: So where's UB?
ME: Bridgeport CT.
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 schools (UM, UA and UB)
VO: why did you pick UB?
ME: I picked UB, majorly for two reasons. First because the core curriculum of this program is in line with my career and academic aspirations, I have interests in Information Systems engineering and how human and computer interaction can foster self learning. And secondly because I’m interested in the works of Professor Neal.............. He is an associate professor in this department and worked closely with Professor Sugata Mintra who pioneered and has been running the hole in the wall initiative in India for the last 13 years. Which is similar to what the organization I work with intends to carry out in Nigerian with funding from the DFID. So for me it would be a mind blowing experience tom study under him.
VO: So what will this degree do for you considering you don't have a science background and what will you do upon return?
ME: it will qualify be for a senior position upon my return, which is what a graduate degree from America can do. Plus studying under Prof Lewis, whose works are quite similar to what my organization intend to carry out in Nigeria in partnership with Murtala Mohammed Foundation and approved funding from DFID, will for me be one of the most impacting times of my career.
VO: Did you take any qualifying exams?
ME: Yes, hands him my GRE
VO: Was it a prerequisite for admission?
ME: NO
VO: Who will be sponsoring this trip?
ME: why Mom
VO: What does your mom do?
Me: She’s a principal Consultant at the federal ministry of ...................................
VO: do u have proof of financial support
ME: Yes pls, passes him my Mom’s acc balance.
After he scrutinizes it.
So (calls my Name) you have proven to be that you will study and return to Nigeria. You should pick up your visa in Lekki on Thursday. Your I20 and sevis will be returned to you at the visa pickup office. Have a great time studying and enjoy CT.
ME: Thank You Mister.
That's it people. Above all i prayed and fasted about it fervently. then i believed in faith according to Matt. 21:22. there's nothing impossible with God people. smiley grin
Congrats bro! So happy for U... U'll rejoice wif Me too soon!

Yvete: You need SAT & TOEFL for undergrad. Look up the meaning of the acronyms. Find out what your school requires from prospective applicants.

If you mention my name, I assume that you'd want to hear from me, the truth, RAW. I must say that you've got some work to do with the gap. Seems like you've been out of school for a while. Work on that. Timing is not important right now. Don't be in such a rush to write SAT unprepared. Study, plan ahead and nail it. Good luck.

Some people just need to STFU. Very annoying posts this evening. If you'd love to return to Nigeria, that's your business and nobody else. Come to the US, start your business and employ people to work for you. Let's see how USCIS grants your green card request. Not every degree gets sponsorship for H1b after graduation. Don't get a degree in Pol. Sci and expect anyone to file for you. s
Thanks so much Ma'am, I actually did a diploma in law program in between and as since been working as a branch controller with my brothers telecoms business which is why I want to go for a degree in business administration.

Thanks @imperiouxx and kpolli - pls how do I get the SAT and TOEFL scores sent to the schools as I'll have to write the exams before applying, I see all the schools I've checked are requesting for the scores to be sent to them and I guess this can only be done when registering for the exams. I'm so sorry for bothering U guys, I am a novice in the field and just want to have good testimonies to give on this thread at the end of it all. God bless You.

imperiouxx: You don't need to rush yourself. I still believe much in Fall interview having much success rate. Do the SAT last(sometime around May before your school deadline) and plan your interview against fall 2013. You should be fine.

Pls everyone, I have a question to ask.
After changing my mind about VIU, Yvete and others said I have to write the SAT and TOEFL exams but the problem now is I don't know how to go about dat. The next TOEFL exams in lagos is on d 25th of January and I dunno abt SAT yet, but I want to enroll for the Fall session. Do U think I can still meet up or should I just go for another session? I learnt the SAT exams takes close to four months for preparation... Please advise Me 'coz I know You all have gone thru dis stage before. I will be applying as an Undergraduate to study Business Administration. Thanks for your help always.

webstradamus: An interesting trend I have observed lately is people "suddenly" realizing they couldn't afford their tuition & fees immediately after obtaining their visas. I really wonder if they intentional avoid to lookup the fees at the time of application or maybe the fees weren't published at the time. I think people should cut their coat according to their cloth. There's no need applying to a school you cannot afford except you are hoping to get some scholarship/assistantship (assuming you are extremely qualified). Even at that, always have a Plan B because funding is not usually guaranteed. Proper planning prior to leaving Nigeria is key to your survival here in the US.

There are a number of good and affordable Universities in the US. Do your research! In my time, I realized it was even possible to get automatic in-state tuition even as an international student! For example, if you can withstand the cold in Minnesota, I can confidently tell you it's one of the most affordable states to study in the US. Minnesota State University Moorhead, Minnesota State University Mankato and St. Cloud University all offer in-state tuition for international students. This means you could be paying less than $4000 for a 12-18 credit semester!

Please do your research carefully so you don't end up being frustrated in the US. Like I said earlier, proper planning is key to your survival here.
Thank you so much for this post, it is really a blessing being part of this thread and thank God I got to know about the VIU ish before paying for sevis and interview, now I am looking up these schools you mentioned and I am glad I found them with the help of this thread.... Pls you all should keep up the good work, may God reward you all (Yvete, kpolli, imperiouxx, mamacita, webstradamus and every other person i've not mentioned) smiley

imperiouxx: I wonder why those wretched Nigerian agents won't hesitate to lure travel wannabes with those technical. Those agents won't advert world leading schools such MIT, Sanford, Harvard and other government schools in the US but VIU, devry, Phoenix etc, all for the same price and stress. If you open your yahoomail and see school adverts flashing, ask yourself if the school is so tiny that people in US couldn't see it for it to be on yahoo ads.

@olarwarlay,

So far on this thread, we've seen VIU visa applicants 0 vs US embassy Nigeria 4 within one month. Digest that.
Thanks so much imperiouxx and others, are other sch in virginia good to choose e.g virginia commonwealth... and others or maybe you could help further by suggesting better schools with beta chances. Thanks.
