The federal government has granted provisional approval for the R21/Matrix malaria vaccine developed by scientists at Oxford University. Mojisola Adeyeye, director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC), made the announcement at a press briefing on Monday. The development comes days after Ghana became the first country to approve the vaccine — which is said to be 80 percent effective. The malaria vaccine is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India Pvt Ltd. Advertisement “The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in exercising its mandate as stipulated by its enabling law, NAFDAC Act CapN1, LFN 2004 is granting registration approval for R21 malaria vaccine,” Adeyeye said at the press briefing. “The vaccine is indicated for prevention of clinical malaria in children from five months to 36 months of age. The storage temperature of the vaccine is 2-8 °C.” ‘Vaccine scored as satisfactory after review’ Adeyeye said NAFDAC received the dossier of the R21 and subjected it to independent review by experts from Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and the agency’s in-house vaccine review committee. Advertisement The director-general said a joint review was then called after the team assessed the vaccine as “adequate” and the in-house committee also assessed it as “satisfactory”. “Overall, the R21 malaria vaccine dossier complied substantially with best international standards with which the dossier was benched-marked as mentioned above. The joint review committee concluded that the data on the R21 malaria vaccine were robust and met criteria for efficacy, safety, and quality,” she said. “It was also adjudged that the vaccine’s known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks, thereby supporting the manufacturer’s recommended use. “A provisional approval of the R21 malaria vaccine was recommended and this shall be done in line with the WHO’s malaria vaccine implementation guideline. “While granting the approval, the agency has also communicated the need for expansion of the clinical trial conducted to include a phase 4 clinical trial/pharmacovigilance study to be carried out in Nigeria. The brief on the approval of the R21 Malaria vaccine has been communicated to the minister of health and national primary health care development agency for appropriate actions toward immunisation in the respective population.” The only vaccine currently endorsed for malaria by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is the RTS, S/AS01 (RTS,S) vaccine which is 29 percent effective in preventing severe malaria. https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-fg-approves-use-of-groundbreaking-oxford-malaria-vaccine/amp |

The senator representing Enugu East Senatotial District, Chimaroke Nnamani, has announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after he lost his senatorial bid to the Labour Party. Nnamani also expressed appreciation to his constituents for the unalloyed support over the years. The former Enugu State governor’s formal exit from the opposition party was contained in a statement he signed on Monday. The senator was expelled by the PDP on February 10, 2023, alongside some other key party members for alleged anti-party activities. This is also as he lost his bid to return to the Senate to his rival Kelvin Chukwu of the Labour Party. Nnamani stated that he had consulted with his associates and constituents alike and had decided to quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party. Speaking further, he noted that he had moved on and hoped that his modest contributions to the development of his constituency would be the building block on which his successors could build on. While reaffirming his acquaintance with the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, he promised to continue to partner him. The former governor also thanked Nigerians especially the Ebeano political family and urged them to remain steadfast in the years ahead. He further expressed optimism that the Tinubu administration would promote good governance, rule of law and human rights for the interest of all Nigerians. https://mydailybells.com.ng/nnamani-quits-pdp-after-losing-senatorial-seat-to-lp-reaffirms-pact-with-president-elect-tinubu/ |

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the State Command, SP Abdullahi Usman, disclosed this our Correspondent. SP Usman said that crisis broke out when a female Police officer, who was reporting for duty at the INEC State headquarters in Jalingo, was stopped by a military man at a checkpoint closed to the headquarters and asked for proper identification. He said the misunderstanding that ensued was settled and the female Police officer proceeded to the Collation Centre only for the Soldier to go after her and dragged her out forcefully, leading to a pandemonium. Leadership News JUST-IN: 2 Policemen Killed, Others Injured In Clash With Soldiers In Taraba by John Mkom 5 mins ago Reading Time: 2 mins read Ebubeagu Has No Role In Electioneering – Ebonyi CP Two police officers attached to the Taraba State Command have been killed by Soldiers in Jalingo, the State capital, on Monday morning, while two others were wounded and receiving treatment from gunshot wounds following a scuffle between men of the sister security agencies. “A very ugly incident happened this morning around 8:30am between a female police officer and a soldier. After the initial misunderstanding, the lady was allowed to proceed to her duty post but later the soldier went back to drag her out. The thing is that he called for reinforcement from his office and when it arrived, he had nothing to report and decided to create a situation. “While we were trying to settle things and I was personally talken to one of the senior soldiers there, the soldiers suddenly started shooting. We were caught in the crossfire and had to run for our dear lives. The soldiers proceeded to the Command Headquarters here and shot two police officers and went away with their riffles. “One police officer who was going off duty was shot and killed instantly while another who was just reporting for duty and did not even know what was happening was also shot the moment they identified him as a policeman. “As we speak, we have gotten reports that our men who are escorting election results or on various duties are been stopped at military checkpoints and harassed. They strip them naked and harass them even though they know nothing about what happened. “For now, the Commissioner of Police CP Yusuf A. Suleiman and the Commander of 6 Brigade Jalingo have met and discussed and have agreed that a commission of enquiry will be set up to look into the real cause of this incident,” the PPRO stated. Our Correspondent reports that there was still serious tension in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital after the over two-hour gun duel between the Army personnel and the Policemen while collation of the State’s governorship election results, which was scheduled to resume by 11:30am on Monday, had now been postponed. https://leadership.ng/just-in-2-policemen-killed-others-injured-in-clash-with-soldiers-in-taraba/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |
