More Nigerian subscribers have expressed their readiness to boycott digital satellite services offered by Multichoice, owners of DStv and GoTV. The resolve follows the South African firm’s intention to raise tariff again from September 1. The second within a space of three months comes amid a subsisting order of the House of Representatives seeking a stay of action on the earlier hike. MultiChoice, had at the weekend, sent messages of an impending increase, effective next month. One of the texts read: “Dear Customer, please be advised of a price adjustment on your DStv Premium package from September 1. Your new monthly subscription will be N18,400.” In May, the company informed its teeming subscribers of the take-off of a new tariff from June 1. The firm had reviewed upward the price of Premium package from ₦15,800 to ₦16,200. Another SMS read: “Dear Customer, please be advised of a price adjustment on your DStv Compact Plus package from September 1. Your new monthly subscription will be N12,400.” The new move is against the ₦10,925 introduced three months ago. Compact subscribers are to part with N7,900 up from N6,975. Checks showed that the South African conglomerate increased the package-by-package tariffs by 13.6 per cent, 13.3 per cent and 9.8 per cent. Prior to the earlier hike, the management had blamed the new price regime on Federal Government’s 2.5 per cent increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) from five to 7.5 per cent. MultiChoice has, however, not provided any reason or justification for the proposed increase. Customers, who spoke with The Guardian, expressed shock and bitterness over the decision, describing the firm as ‘heartless. “What is the meaning of this? It was June they effected a tariff hike, three months after, another one. This is wicked and heartless on the part of Multichoice,” said Mustapha Bello, a Lagos-based subscriber . He urged Nigerians to part ways with the operator. Another user, Edwin Madunagu, said: “I don’t think the Federal Government or the agency protecting customer affairs exists anymore in Nigeria. How can you increase tariff exorbitantly within three Months?” Madunagu, like Bello, called on Nigerians to resist the new hike by boycotting the services completely. On Twitter, Odubayo Nathaniel with the handle@natoodus, submitted: “If you got the same message I got from @DStvNg, please do not keep quiet. Nigeria is their biggest market, and yet South Africa enjoys. “DStv is using bribe as a means to kill other competitors in the industry, so they can have a monopoly market. It’s like they want to go back to where they came from. “Some people in government raised the issue of the costly price for DStv bouquet, now no one is talking. Price is up again. Please we need #dstvpayperview.” Another tweet @ChocBerry, replying Nathaniel, stated: “The price increase is all over Africa.” Meanwhile, MultiChoice Nigeria has said it made direct and indirect contributions to the economy of the most populous nation to the tune of N634.6 billion between 2015 and 2019. In a report entitled ‘MultiChoice: Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Value’, which was published in collaboration with a consulting firm, Accenture Strategy, the firm claimed that it had enriched “millions of lives by providing entertaining video content and telling the most loved Nigerian stories.” https://m.guardian.ng/news/nigerians-kick-as-multichoice-hikes-tariff-twice-in-three-months/ |

Lebanon's government has resigned amid mounting anger over the explosion on Tuesday that devastated parts of Beirut and left more than 200 people dead. The announcement was made in a national TV address by Prime Minister Hassan Diab on Monday evening. Many people have accused the country's leaders of culpability through their alleged negligence and corruption. Protesters have taken to the streets and clashed with police for a third straight day. The massive blast was caused by the detonation of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely at the port for years. On Monday the death toll from the explosion rose to 220 with 110 people still missing, Beirut city governor Marwan Abboud was quoted by the al-Marsad Online news website as saying. Many foreign workers and lorry drivers were among the missing, he told Al Jadeed TV channel. The huge blast damaged buildings in a radius of several kilometres in Beirut, leaving more than 200,000 homeless or living in homes with no windows or doors. On Monday police fired tear gas at angry protesters during tense clashes in the capital. Image copyrightREUTERS Image caption Police and protestors clashed in Beirut on Monday Why did the government resign? Discontent in Lebanon has been brewing for years. In late 2019, a plan to tax Whatsapp calls spilled over into mass protests against economic turmoil and corruption, which eventually led to the government's resignation. Coronavirus had curbed the protests, but the financial situation has continued to worsen and last Tuesday's explosion was seen by many as the deadly result of years of corruption and mismanagement. The government's plans to investigate were not enough for many who have lost all faith in the political elite. Before the cabinet's resignation, a number of ministers had already offered to step down. But the end of this government does not necessarily mean an end to the anger. Last year's protests led to the formation of the government which has now been forced to step down over the same accusations of corruption. https://bbc.in/31CzWAT |

The Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has reportedly asked the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to stop airing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija). According to TheCable, the acting director-general of the NBC, Armstrong Idachaba, told senior management members that he had been directed by Lai Mohammed to shut down the BBNaija show due to possible spread of COVID-19 among housemates. The minister had reportedly sent a letter to NBC on July 1, 2020 before the BBNaija show began. His move to shut down the show is believed to be because of the general opinion that he is bent on sending MultiChoice Ltd, producers of the show, out of Nigeria. Mohammed is believed to have launched political moves against MultiChoice in order to pave the way for his main consultant to make a return to Pay TV after previously failing. A director is said to have reminded the meeting that NBC had already sought explanation from Multichoice on a possible violation of COVID-19 protocols with the airing of the show. MultiChoice replied with detailed explanations on measures taken in collaboration with the Lagos state government, whose agency, Lagos State Safety Commission, gave the green light for the show. All housemates went through a mandatory two-week isolation during which COVID-19 symptoms would have manifested if they had the disease. A second director is said to have told the meeting that participants of the show had maintained the safety protocols, notably generous use of hand sanitisers, since it started on Sunday. However, the acting DG was said to have told the meeting that he would have no other option than to carry out Mohammed’s order — the same way he altered the broadcast code to please the minister despite public outcry. Idachaba, in his response to TheCable, simply said BBN will not be taken off air but did not provide any further information.
