An Arik Air passenger Tonye Ibiama, took to his Facebook wall to post pictures of how the airline left its passengers stranded at the Lagos Murtala Mohammed International airport on Wednesday, December 28. The man revealed how passengers slept on the floor at the airport. According to his post which has gone viral on social media, he said: “I have not seen this type of wickedness from an airline. After people will say buy Naija to grow the Naira yet the naija is too mean to its own people. How do you keep your passengers from 6am to the time of this write up without a word at the Lagos international airport? People have slept overnight there without answers. I am a victim and this is my last with Arik air. I have tried so much but who send me? When you approach NCAA to complain, they don't even seem to have a hold or make this airline to speak to someone. Even the consumer protection means nothing in this country. God help us. Arik is a joke.” http://www.metronaija.com/2016/12/photos-arik-air-passengers-sleep-on.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Dear Compatriots, I heartily rejoice with all Nigerians, particularly our Christian brothers and sisters, on this year's celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate this year’s Christmas, I believe that it is very appropriate for us to reflect on the love of God aptly espoused in the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus Christ. During his earthly sojourn, Jesus Christ repeatedly reminded his disciples and followers of peace that comes in the midst of trials and tribulations on earth. There is no better time than now in our nation’s history to pray for divine guidance to get over our current challenges. We can have peace in Nigeria if we all learn to tolerate and appreciate one another, respect constituted authority; and be our brothers’ keepers in word and deed. During this period, we should remember to offer special prayers to God for all our heroic citizens who paid the supreme price to restore peace and security in the North East and other flash points in the country. Let us also remember in our prayers the security forces in the frontline in the continuing battle to rid our nation of terrorism and violence. We must not forget the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in our midst and those who have suffered untold hardship as a result of activities of insurgents and terrorists. Our immediate priority is to alleviate the poverty of Nigerians by quickly stimulating the economy. I assure Nigerians that our government is doing its best to make life easier for all. Let us therefore, renew our hope in the God-ordained unity, progress and prosperity of our great nation. I wish all travellers safe movements and a memorable holiday as we celebrate with our family and friends. MERRY CHRISTMAS! MUHAMMADU BUHARI President, Federal Republic of Nigeria December 24, 2016. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/12/read-buhari-christmas-message.html

As Christians in Nigeria join the rest of the world to celebrate Christmas, Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has enjoined Nigerians to embrace the virtues of love and peaceful coexistence that the season symbolises. The Governor, in his Christmas goodwill message, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, urged Nigerians to also seize the moment to reach out to fellow Nigerians who are in distress at this period of the nation’s history. He said that despite the economic challenges, Nigeria was still making steady progress, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in their belief that the nation would experience better days ahead. “The season of Christmas is one that exemplifies the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence. We must continue to extend a hand of love, benevolence and live as one family irrespective of our creed or colour. We must also continue to respect each other’s right to live freely and peacefully”, the Governor said. Governor Ambode said Nigeria over the years has continued to draw strength from its diversity, saying that Nigerians must therefore stand together and join hands to move the nation forward. He urged residents to be safety and security conscious, especially during the festive period and refrain from habits that could endanger their lives including indulging in drinking and driving and other social vices. He also encouraged residents not to hesitate to report all suspicious activities around them by using the Toll free lines 767 and 112, reminding that the business of securing lives and property could not be left to the security agencies alone. “The period of Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ who is the symbol of Christianity and the harbinger of peace, love and good tidings and there is no better way to celebrate the season than by showing love and being our brother’s keeper. Let us cultivate the habit of giving to those who need our help at this time, it would go a long way to put smile on their faces”, the Governor said. While wishing all Lagosians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance, the Governor also called on Lagosians to continue to support his administration’s policies and programmes, assuring that the ongoing developmental strides would continue to spread across the length and breadth of the State. The Citizen Anti Corruption Volunteer Corps, CACVC, a non-governmental organisation, has honoured Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State for distinguishing himself in the fight against corruption, bribery and fraud in the state and Nigeria at large. The group also honoured Mudashiru Obasa, speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly and Monday Onyekachi Ubani, second vice president, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA. Others recognised by the anti-corruption group are Chris Nwaokobia, director general, Change Ambassadors of Nigeria; Great Imo Jonathan, human rights activist, and Jude Akagbusum, president, Institute of Good Governance of Nigeria. Harris Chuma, executive director, CACVC, said Governor Ambode was honoured as the best governor on transparency and good governance after a painstaking exit survey conducted by the group. He said the honour was in recognition of his sterling performance in office since the inception of his administration in 2015. “Transparency and good governance merit award, TGMA, has become a meeting point where anti corruptionists converge to brainstorm and lead discussions on varied strategies in curbing the menace of the scourge called corruption. This year marks the observance of CACVC anti corruption, bribery and fraud awareness campaigners’ day, which is set aside to raise awareness about the impact of corruption upon our society. “We are dedicated to the mission of reducing the incidence of corruption in Nigeria, estimates that a typical governmental ministry loses more than five percent of its revenue each year to corruption. States, local, and federal governments are frequent targets of fraud and corruption. An instance of fraud in government undermines the good work and reputation of all state employees who complete their assigned duties with integrity and honesty, and decreases confidence in public officials,” Chuma said. The CACVC director said the passionate resolve of his group to encourage and celebrate personalities that had exhibited utmost good faith in the renewed campaign against corruption would continue to occupy a place of interest in the overall configuration of the organisation’s annual anti corruption lecture series. Nwaokobia, who delivered a keynote address on ‘The Quest for Good Governance, the Lagos Experience’ said the country could achieve the desired good governance if it understudied Lagos State. He said Lagos under the current administration was very transparent in ensuring that it published its monthly revenue generation in the state. According to him, Governor Ambode’s engagement of the citizenry on a quarterly basis has made him to interact and understand the primary needs of the people. “This has made Lagos the best state in the country. Lagos is a state without land but it has gone into agreement with Kebbi State to produce rice for the state consumption,” he said. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/12/akinwunmi-ambode-named-best.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Following the disruption of its operations by a group of people under the aegis of United Labour Congress (ULC) over unpaid salaries, the management of Arik Air has released a statement. The Airline claimed that “the aviation unions under the aegis of National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Traffic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN) are protesting the non-unionisation of Arik Air staff who are not members of any of these protesting unions.” The statement added that the Airline had scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, but the protesters did not wait. Arik Air expresses its dismay and disappointment that a group of aviation unions have ambushed and disrupted the operations of the airline from early hours of Tuesday, December 20, 2016 by occupying its head office premises and preventing staff from gaining access to their workplace. The representatives of the protesting unions also prevented the staff of the airline from gaining access to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, disabling the checking-in of passengers for both domestic and international flights. Access to the airport terminals is fundamental to the airline’s operations for movement of its personnel to ready and dispatch our aircraft for various flights. The aviation unions under the aegis of National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Traffic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN) are protesting the non-unionisation of Arik Air staff who are not members of any of these protesting unions. The union leadership had earlier written a letter to the management of Arik Air on their grievances and a meeting had been scheduled between the two parties for Wednesday, December 21, 2016. The unions however did not wait for the scheduled meeting or the outcome of the meeting, before embarking on such disruptive and strong-arm tactics against the airline. The unions have demonstrated total disregard for the laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria by interfering in the operations of the airline and preventing airline staff from carrying on with their duties of handling the passengers booked for today’s flights. The decision not to join the aviation unions is that of the generality of Arik Air and the management of the airline is not involved in any manner and neither can it influence such individual decisions in any form since Unionism is a free will and not a matter of compulsion. Arik Air is appealing to all the Security Agencies, the Minister of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and all the other stakeholders in the industry to prevail on these aviation unions to allow for operations to commence immediately since this unjustifiable disruption by the unions has already inconvenienced the travel plans of thousands of passengers today. Arik Air sincerely apologise to its esteemed passengers for any inconvenience experienced due to this unwarranted disruption and unlawful action by the unions. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/12/arik-air-releases-statement-on.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not change its registered name for a mega party, Prof. Jerry Gana, has said. Gana, who chairs the PDP Strategic Review and Inter-party Affairs Committee, made the statement on Thursday in Abuja in an interview with newsmen during a meeting of the committee. Asked for his comment on the recommendations of the committee on the issue of mega party, Gana said that the party’s relationship with other political parties would be based on principle and cleared guidelines. He said: “on the progress of the alliance, I will not like to give details of what is being recommended, but the PDP is desirous of attracting all lovers of democracy across the country as we move forward. “There are details I cannot divulge at the moment because the committee’s recommendations will be passed on to the party leadership. It will not be wise to disclose the details before we submit the report. “On the issue of mega party, we are not yet aware of PDP involvement, but all we can say is that the party wants to relate with lovers of democracy in all the parties. “We have a syndicate committee working on this chaired by former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu. They are to give us the guidelines for any re-alignment plan and the number of parties that are willing to join us. “Our engagement will be based on principle and cleared guidelines. PDP is the only party that can be found in every ward, it is the only party that has not changed its name, and we are not going to change the name of our party.’’ Gana said that the committee, which was broken into 11 syndicates, would come up with recommendations that would help to re-position and strengthen the party. He called on lovers of democracy in the country to rise up against what he described as `degeneration of democratic and electoral process gained during PDP administration.’ “Democracy in Nigeria is under threat and we must rise and defend democracy, because that is the best form of government for humanity now. “This is not the age for military rule or autocracy. In democracy, there must be freedom of voters to choose freely, peacefully, in a free and fair election that is credible,’’ he said. He said that the PDP condemned in strong terms the current degeneration of electoral process with violence being brought into political arena as witnessed in Rivers. Gana said that the committee would reconvene in the middle of January 2017 to continue on its deliberations. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/12/we-are-open-to-mega-party-merger-but.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
