Politics › Re: Nigeria Graduates Unemployable Status Worrisome – Buhari by olril17(m): 7:17pm On Dec 21, 2019 |
Ebullience: Peter Dada, Akure
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has called on the universities in Nigeria to be more proactive in ensuring that their graduates are employable.
He said many Nigerian graduates were being described as unemployable by some employers of labour, saying this was worrisome to his regime.
Buhari stated this at the 31st Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, on Saturday.
According to him, the present regime considered education as the cornerstone of national development with universities as the pinnacle of education, “being the engine of knowledge generation and dissemination.”
He said, “In today’s globalised knowledge economy in which the wealth, strategic importance and ranking of any country in the comity of nations is determined largely by its knowledge economy index, my expectation is that our universities will use the instrumentality of their tripartite mandates of teaching, research and community engagement to launch Nigeria into an enviable position among nations of the world.
“In this regard, government expects Nigerian universities to produce graduates imbued with the requisite knowledge, competencies, attitudes, and skills to be active role players in our quest for socio-economic and technological development.
“I expect universities to pay serious attention to the less than complimentary assessment of the graduates of our universities by employers of labour. Definitely, we can not be comfortable when products of our citadels of learning are being described as ‘unemployable’, exhibiting lack of job-readiness and so on.”
Major General Buhari (retd.) noted that issues of graduate employability and skills are pertinent issues gaining tractions nationally and internationally and are prominent on the front burners of discourse on higher education and the future of work.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Joseph Fuwape, urged the graduating students to remain focused and diligent in order to occupy the prime positions of leadership in the country.

Sirjamo: Absolute nonsense! Obasanjo was there for 8 years, he did not bring any development worth 1 million dollars to the whole of southern Nigeria. GEJ was there for 6 years, what did he do for us aside the paper sketch of the second Niger bridge?
Buhari might be nepotistic but he has done far more for the south than all the three Presidents that preceded him.
He can pick all his appointees from Daura, I don't care, so long they don't take all developments to the north. apooda. |

maasoap: This is not politics, why bringing politics into it. I could see in your other quote where you mentioned Buhari. You think that bad roads is about Buhari? No, it goes beyond four years of Buhari in power and into the 16 years of PDP in power.
Back to the issue: we are just trying to tell the op that you don't compare best of A with the worst of B or worst of A with the best of B. That's a very bad way to get people judge the situation. Why would anyone tell me to compare your weakness with the strength of your friend and make judgement? It doesn't make sense. But we know, some of you need people like us to do the thinking for you ekuun loopoo tooyii..pelee |

It won't do you no harm to stop twisting my comment and take it as I'm giving it out, okay? My anger is with the op because he tried to manipulate us by showing us the best roads in UAE and showed us the worst roads in Nigeria. That's dishonesty, deception and manipulation. His message was distorted. If he had done justice with his post, it would have had the exact same effects he wanted. And why would I have anything personal against anonymous person on Nairaland? Except for the fact that this post of his exposed his unpatriotic tendencies. I'm still baffled that you refused to see it! with people like this one,wey be say everitin na politics,na trouble we dey |
