Russia was the capital of the USSR. So it was expected. But that does mean that the Russian economy was really strong on the world stage.

There are two types of missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. They are tactical and strategic missiles.

That is why it is requesting for NATO air defense systems. Any super will find it difficult to gain air superiority in a country that has a lots of mobile air defense systems.

Ukraine used to be a fortress for Russia during the era of the USSR. Almost every infrastructure you see in Ukraine today was built by the Soviet. The rail systems, power plants e.t.c. Ukraine inherited huge military industry from the Soviet. It is not a push over country.

Ukraine has one of the best integrated air defense systems in the world. The Soviet made S-300, BUK and ORCA anti drone defense system. These systems are game changer for Ukraine. They are able to denial Russian air superiority. Ukraine has a lots of defense systems and they also has the ability to repair them. Ukraine has one of the best military in Europe before the war. With the exception of UK, France & Italy tell me any other NATO member who is stronger than Ukraine. It is Poland, Croatia, Spain, Portugal or German. No individual NATO member has integrated air defense system like Ukraine. (Except the three mentioned above). They all rely on the US for protection. German is one of the major arm exporter in Europe. The same country can not fight a war that will last for months. Individually they are not strong. The entire UK Military can fit in a stadium. Non of the NATO members can withstand 50k artillery shells on a daily basis.

The capital Kiev has thousands of high rise buildings. Imagine when you have to clear those buildings one after the other. All these infrastructures shield you from air attack. The only way to seize territory is to use your ground forces. Now imagine the looses you will suffer.

In Iraq for example. If you can take the capital- Baghdad and the second largest city Mosul, then it is game over. In fact there are more high rise building in the little city of Mariupol than Baghdad. The story is not the same with Ukraine. Almost all the cities are developed.

You need nothing less than 600k+ troops to take Ukraine.

The war is necessary. Putin is not a fool. The soldiers doing the fighting are not fools. Russians in general are aware of what is going on. They have access to pro Western news likewise pro Russian news. So they are well informed. Some Russians are against the war (especially the Navanni group-the pro-Western activists). But majority of Russians are in support.

Russia has been invaded several times. Almost all the invasion came from the east (Ukraine). The Mongols invaded Russia through Ukraine. Likewise the Germans. If there is a conflict between Russia and NATO tomorrow, the attack will also come from the east (Ukraine). You can't invade Russia through the Baltic. The entire Baltic states (including the Baltic sea) are well within the range of Russian missiles. Likewise Russian defense system radar covers almost the entire Baltic states. So launchg an attack from the Baltic on Russia is suicide. Also the US can not also invade Russia through the artic. It is impossible to launch ground offensive on Russia through the artic. Although missiles can be launched from the US into Russia from the artic. But the missiles will have to travel thousands of kilometers, which will give the Russians enough time to shoot them down. Russia can only be invaded through Ukraine. This is the Reason Ukraine is very important. The West knows this and this is why they want Ukraine.

The main reason why this war has been slow is strictly because of the method Russia is using to execute the war.

Instead of storming the Ukrainian well fortified town (Poposnaya, Bakhmut, Severdontsk e.t.c) directly. They focus on encircling the City/Town to cut it off from the supply line. Then use their artillery to destroy the entire city/town before sending in troops to clean it up. This method is time consuming but it reduces the number of casualties the attacker suffers.

Russia is executing this war methodically. They are not throwing soldiers to the frontline to go and die. Instead they are using Artillery to grind the defender. Russia lost a lots of troops at the beginning of the war. The Russians learn from their mistake and are always ready to change tactics.

The new general-Sorovikin is even stingy with loosing troops.
