Which is the longest bridge in Africa? Niger Bridge; Wrong. Third Mainland Bridge? Wrong. Etebi-Enwang Bridge; Correct. And it is in Akwa Ibom State and has already been tagged one of the wonders of the world. If the Third Mainland Bridge with only 11.82 km in length can hitherto wear the gold medal as the longest bridge in Africa, the Etebi-Enwang Bridge with a total length of 21 Km would not only send Third Mainland Bridge to a distant second position, but would also compete stoutly with the Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd Bridge for a bronze medal as the third longest bridge in the world leaving first and second positions unchallenged to Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Southern Louisiana, USA with 38.42 Km and Donghai Bridge in China with 32.5km.

The Akwa Ibom state commissioner works, Mr Don Etim, who went on inspection of the wonder bridge on Monday, said that the construction of the bridge which is part of Etebi-Enwang Road, started in 2008 and the Etebi -Enwang axis would lead to the proposed Ibaka sea port in the state. The Etebi-Enwang road cuts across Eket and Mbo local government areas of the state. Etim said the construction of the road and bridge had been a great challenge to previous administrations because communities in the area had no roads that is why the Akpabio administration had to up the area. He said the contractors working on the project were all screened, as projects of such nature are not to be carried out in flimsy ways.

The principal consultant of the project, Mr. Victor Annang of Mega Projects International, said the challenges encountered the construction has been enormous. owing to the nature of the soil in the area, as such a beacon pile bridge was a suitable option. This, coupled with the addition of two more bridges, he said led to an extension of the completion time of the project to 2013, rather 2011. . .

Few words were spoken. The tense atmosphere was interrupted by sobs. As tears flowed freely, community leaders recounted how 10 pupils and two women died in a boat mishap during Monday morning’s storm in Lagos. It was at Ojota community in Otto Awori Local Council Development Area, a riverine rural community, in Lagos State. The Commissioner for Rural Development, Mr. Cornelius Ojelabi, visited the village yesterday to condole with families of the victims. Twenty-two primary school pupils of St. Mary’s Nursery and Primary School, Igbede-Ojo, and two women left Ojota community in a wooden boat heading for Igbede Village, another riverine community, that fateful Monday morning. Suddenly, the rainstorm came. The boat capsized, drowning the 10 pupils and two women. 12 other pupils survived. The victims are Mistura Hassan (9), Fausat Hassan (7), Michael Eniola (12), Tope Rufai, Ayisat Hassan, Afisat Hassan, Abigail Aminu, Oniru Muyibi, Nofisat Aminu, Aminat Tijani, Madam Hassan (wife of the Baale of Ojota) and Madam Ibijoke, a resident of a neighbouring community. A member of the boat operators in Agbede-Ojo, who did not want his name in print, recounted the tragedy. He said the boat capsized when it was almost at shore. “It is very unfortunate; the boat was almost at the shore, but just a few metres away, the weather changed and the women asked the boat driver to move further so that they could stop at the nearby town to avoid the rain. One of the women panicked, she attempted to stand up from the boat and immediately, the boat lost balance and with the heavy wind, it capsized. Everybody on board fell into the water. Some of the children died not because they could not swim, but because of the raging storm and wind. Some who could swim, survived. It is a very unfortunate incident and we have never witnessed such before now”. The operator said passengers of the boat did not wear life jackets. Ojelabi expressed regrets that none of the passengers wore life jacket. He said Governor Babatunde Fashola on learning of the incident, directed a team comprising himself, Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye and Special Adviser on Rural Development, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, among other government officials’ to pay condolence visits to families of the victims. “We were at the Executive Council meeting when we heard the news and the governor mandated us to come here and check the authenticity of the story. We came and reported back to the governor and he was really bitter about the loss of lives of innocent children who did not use life jackets. He asked us to come here again, first to commiserate with the families of the victims and then to see how we can forestall any future occurrence,” Ojelabi said. Ojelabi announced that Fashola had directed that an access road be constructed within two weeks to link Ojota Community with the Agbede-Ojo area. The Ministry of Rural Development will also purchase three units of tricycles to convey the children to and from school. “For now, we will carry out the governor’s directive in the next 14 days, to ensure the safety of the pupils, until we are able to make a bridge to link the alternative schools in the area”, Ojelabi said. He warned the boat operators to ensure that passengers wear life jackets for every trip on the water. He said besides seizing the defaulters’ boats, they will also be prosecuted. Fashola expressed regrets over the impact of the natural disaster that destroyed property across the state. He inspected the state-owned Office of The Public Defender Building in Surulere which was billed for inauguration yesterday, but postponed following the damage done to it by the storm. He said the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), is currently evaluating the effect of the rainstorm. The government, he said, would act on its findings as soon as the agency completes its assignment. His words: “Let me first express sympathy to all those who are victims of that storm. From the report that I have received, the damage came not so much from the water but from the high storm that blew off roofs and stalls. I will like to thank the various local government chairmen where these incidents occurred. I have been briefed regularly about the impact in the various local government and the steps the various local governments have taken in terms of resettlement, relocation and provision of reliefs. “The LASEMA is also going round in evaluating and getting back to us. Whatever remains undone at the local level, we will respond on much more wholesome scale after collation. In fact, this building would have been handed over today but a section of the roof came off but they had to fix it over night. “We are in unusual time, in terms of weather. We are having changing patterns of weather when you begin to witness rainfall in January and February. The knowledge that we have about rainy season is June and July so, it means also that we must change our ways. “From what I see today in Europe, clearly you see that it is winter area but the winter is so extreme. Just yesterday I was monitoring Ukraine; over 110 people have died there. People are losing their limbs. Some people are being amputated to keep them alive because of the impact. We cannot expect as part of this world, on this same planet to be immune from this unusual weather pattern. I expect, therefore, we will see very heavy rain fall later in the year. Allaying the fears of the residents, he said officials of the Ministry of Environment had begun opening all the canals and channels to ensure that no matter how severe the weather is, the impact is easily mitigated. He urged the residents to desist from dumping refuse in the drainage channels and canals currently being de-silted by the government to avert excessive flooding when the rainfall intensifies.

ThisDay- The United States military had, in May 2008, conducted a war games test called Unified Quest 2008, to ascertain how its military might respond to a war in parts of Africa including Nigeria and Somalia.

According to an article written by Director of the African Security Research Project in Washington, DC and Guest Columnist of AllAfrica Global Media, Mr. Daniel Volman ( See: One World Media For ‘Global Citizens’- 2009 World Economic Forum; Are You Ready? ), the Nigerian scenario was predicated upon a possible war in 2013. The article observed that it was the first time the African scenarios were included, as part of Pentagon’s plan to create a new military command for Africa: the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). It also emerged that “the free flow of natural resources from Africa to the global market” was one of the “guiding principles” of AFRICOM, asarticulated by Vice Admiral Robert Moeller at an AFRICOM conference held at Fort McNair on February 18, 2008.

The 2013 war date, the article said, was a test of how AFRICOM could respond to a crisis in Nigeria in the event that rival factions and rebels fight for control of the oil fields of the Niger Delta and the government was near collapse.
Among scenarios examined, Volman said, were the possibility of direct American military intervention involving some 20,000 US troops in order to “secure the oil,” bearing in mind that Nigeria is a major supplier of US oil needs.
Also, the question of how to handle possible splits between factions within the Nigerian government was tested.
Other options included diplomatic pressure, military action, with or without the aid of European and African nations.
One participant, US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Mark Stanovich, drew up a plan that called for the deployment of thousands of U.S. troops within 60 days, which even he thought was undesirable, Volman stated.

“American intervention could send the wrong message: that we are backing a government that we don’t intend to,” Stanovich said. Other participants suggested that it would be better if the U.S. government sent a request to South Africa or Ghana to send troops into Nigeria instead,” the article stated.

According to Major Robert Thornton, an officer with the Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, “it became apparent that it was actually green (the host nation government) which had the initiative, and that any blue [the U.S. government and its allies] actions within the frame were contingent upon what green was willing to tolerate and accommodate.”“As the game progressed, according to former U.S. ambassador David Lyon, it became clear that the government of Nigeria was a large part of the problem. As he put it, ‘we have a circle of elites [the government of Nigeria] who have seized resources and are trying to perpetuate themselves. Their interests are not exactly those of the people,” said the article.

“The recommendations which the participants drew up for the Army’s Chief of Staff, General George Casey, do not appear to be publicly available, as what the participants finally concluded was not known. But since the war games took place in the midst of the presidential election campaign, General Casey decided to brief both John McCain and Barack Obama on its results,” the article stated.

The game ended without military intervention because one of the rival factions executed a successful coup and formed a new government that sought stability.

AFRICOM representatives were said to be in communication throughout the test, but non of their officers were part of the event, said Volman.

Volman observed that neither the General of AFRICOM William Ward nor Vice Admiral Mueller “were under illusions about the” purpose of the command.

“Thus when General Ward appeared before the House Armed Services Committee on March 13, 2008, he cited America’s growing dependence on African oil as a priority issue for AFRICOM and went on to proclaim that combating terrorism would be “AFRICOM’s number one theatre-wide goal.” He barely mentioned development, humanitarian aid, peace-keeping or conflict resolution.”

“Since then, as General Ward has demonstrated in an interview with AllAfrica, he has become more adept at sticking to the US government official public position on AFRICOM’s aims and on its escalating military operations on the African continent,” stated the piece. Volman argued that contrary to expectations, President Obama had chosen to increase US military intervention in Africa by providing arms and training to the Transitional Government in Somalia, an attempt to make the continent a central battlefield in the “global war on terrorism.”

He further argued that the operations of AFRICOM had been expanded through a proposed budget for financial year 2010, which will provide increased security assistance to repressive regimes in Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and key US allies such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Rwanda and Uganda.

The war game test drew various participants from the State Department and other US government agencies, foreign military officers (including military representatives from several NATO countries, Australia and Israel), journalists, academics, and the private military contractors that helped run the war games: the Rand Corporation and Booz-Allen.

Another of the four scenarios that were war-gamed was a test of how AFRICOM could respond to a crisis in Somalia — set in 2025 — caused by escalating insurgency and piracy. Unfortunately, no information on the details of the scenario is available.

The five-day game was designed to look at what crisis might erupt in different parts of the world in five to 25 years and how the US might respond. Back in 2005, the US had predicted that Nigeria would break-up in 2015. The report was highly criticised by Nigerian leaders.

Houston and pop star Bobby Brown divorced in 2007 after 14 years of marriage; they have one daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

This Al-mutapha saga has being interesting, but it's getting tough after each day. With the Katako's story. The Al-mustapha case is now semilar to the story called "The Boy who Cried Wolf" and the moral lesson of the story of boy who cried is that when liars tell the truth, they can't believe because of their previous lies.
