Politics › Re: Citizens-Centred Diplomacy: FG Evacuates 1,277 Nigerians From War-Torn CAR by omoharry(f): 2:02pm On Jan 07, 2014
Raptor X: Nigeria is so bleeped up now that thousands of its citizens will migrate to a desperately poor and chronically unstable country like CAR, some people say our large population is a blessing but i beg to differ, if Nigerians can migrate to CAR by the thousands am definitely sure there are thousands of Nigerian migrants in Somalia.
Please bear in mind that the Nigerians in their thousand does not necessarily mean that the whole number of this people migrated there. A lot of these Nigerians are citizens of CENTRA REBUPUBLIC OF CONGO, who got married to Nigerians and became Nigerian citizen by status; together with their children makes up the total number we are having.
Sometimes I am amazed by Nigerians on this forum. Why cant we just sit down for a moment and analyze issues straight before jumping into conclusion. Are we so blinded by our corrupt government that we don't know when to apply our brain to as to why Nigerians are that many in CAR.
Politics › Jonathan Approves Commencement Of Refineries’ Privatization by omoharry(op): 5:05pm On Dec 20, 2013

Besides, the President has also approved the constitution of a steering committee on the privatization process that involves all relevant stakeholder, ministries and agencies.
The Head, Public Communications at BPE, Chigbo Anichebe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
According to BPE, the decision is in furtherance of the economic reform programme of the present administration.
The statement said, “This is in keeping with the Transformation Agenda, which seeks to catalyze and provide an enabling environment for the private sector to be the drivers of economic growth in the country.”
The four refineries are – Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC) I, Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC) II, Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC) and Warri Refining & Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPC).

Politics › Afenifere Demands Publication Of Confab Panel Report by omoharry(op): 4:06pm On Dec 20, 2013
A PAN-YORUBA organisation, Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to make public the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on National Dialogue, which was submitted on Wednesday.

The group made the demand as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said for the national conference to make the expected impact on Nigeria, it must debate critical areas such as system of government and revenue sharing formula.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Kunle Famoriyo, the group said making the report a public document is the only way President Jonathan’s wish to convene the conference can continue to enjoy the support of Nigerians.

“Nigerians have supported the call for the conference and participated fully in the public sessions. Many travelled far distances to participate in the conference. One of them was the late Babarinde Omojola, who never returned home but died after making his presentation in Akure.

“The only way to respect and honour the sacrifices Nigerians made towards the successful completion of the committee’s task is to publicise the report.

“If President Jonathan truly has no personal interest, as he claims, in the conference and he is prepared to allow the will of Nigerians to prevail, the first thing to do is to release the report to the public as a feedback process.”

According to the statement, “Afenifere Renewal Group will not be railroaded into a national conference, whose modalities and terms are skewed against the interest of our people. Certainly, we will only support the proposed conference for as long as it is transparently planned.

“Our demand is to see Nigeria restructured into a truly federalist country with viable and autonomous federating units. We are convinced this is what majority of Nigerians want, as our wide consultations have shown.” The group expressed belief that the conference, when finally convened, will succeed and produce desired outcome “only if it is a conference of Nigerian ethnic nationalities.”

As such, the ARG pleaded with Jonathan not to put the cart before the horse as he allegedly did when he announced that he had instructed the Minister of Finance to make budgetary preparation for the conference.

“It is good to make financial preparation for the conference but we insist that the first thing to do after the submission of the report is to make its content public. We wish to reiterate our earlier advice to President Jonathan that the outcome of this proposed conference will either make or mar his tenure,” the group stated.

A statement signed by the Chairman of the NLC Committee on National Conference, Joe Ajaero, and Secretary, Benson Upah, in Abuja yesterday bemoaned the Femi Okurounmu committee for not consulting the labour movement at the preparatory stage of the confab.

The congress held that specific areas that must be debated by the participants at the conference must include character of the federating units (zones/regions), revenue formula (sharing and allocation of responsibilities), structure of police (federal/regional/zonal), system of government (presidential/parliamentary), resource management for national development, electoral reform, independence of anti-corruption agencies and the judiciary and creation of a new constitution for the country.

NLC noted that the call for a national conference has legitimately persisted because the promise of independence and the commitment of the federal structure (national and regional) to build a welfare state and the consolidation of a true federalism have not been realized.

Though NLC observed that some sections of the country reserve the right to doubt the sincerity of the confab, especially in the face of happenstance in the country since the return of democracy in 1999, it insisted that the proposed conference will help address the question of where the country could have been in several respects if the military had not truncated the evolutionary growth and development of post independence Nigeria.

Labour expressed dismay that the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue has not yet thought it fit or necessary to consult the organised labour, “a pan-Nigeria organisation with millions of membership and a critical stakeholder in the polity.”

The statement reads: “We believe that the report of the committee will not be complete without consultations with the organised labour and other critical stakeholders. While its sojourn to 13 zones may have availed it some information, this information will not take the committee beyond the realms of previous conferences. In other words, this could be a leap of the toad.”

Meanwhile, the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, has emphasized the need for ethnic nationalities in the country to sit and dialogue before the coming 2015 general elections, saying failure to do so might lead to the country’s disintegration.

In an interview with The Guardian, Odumakin said: “For me, if we don’t carefully address 2014 there won’t be 2015, we have to address the question of nationhood in 2014.

“We have moved from one crisis to another. If will hold elections the way we are doing without addressing some of those issues, the elections will bring about disintegration of Nigeria. Because it is an election, we are going to fight along religious and ethnics lines, today the Ijaw are adamant because they want a second term, the North says they want power back.

“We have a president who has spent three years in office and has not been able to hold independent parade outside the Presidential Villa. Where will Jonathan go and campaign in the North East? Where will the Hausa or Fulani of the new PDP called APC go and campaign in South South?

“So they are sitting on the cradle of godfather, politicians cannot see it. It can collapse anytime. The most urgent business for us is to hold sovereign national conference and address issues of nationhood, which we have not addressed in the last 100 years. Even in Britain where they cobbled us together, next year, they are going to discuss whether Scotland should continue to be part of Great Britain, so, if we go for elections the way we are, we can kiss Nigeria bye”.

Entertainment › Mariah Carey Blasted In The U.S For Singing In Nigeria by omoharry(op): 3:42pm On Dec 20, 2013
Recently, popular US website Radaronline blasted Pop star Mariah Carey for “performing for money men in Nigeria,” describing the country as the “world’s centre of bank fraud and human trafficking”.

Carey recently performed at Access Bank’s annual Christmas gig on Saturday, December 14, 2013. The night was also dedicated to the bank’s outgoing managing director, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.

Well, a writer (who clearly failed to include his/her name, preferring to use the pseudo ‘Radar Staff’) at Radaronline feels Carey’s trip to the West African country was unwarranted, alleging that “Nigeria is well-known as the centre of the world’s email financial crimes” and is a “country well known for terror, death and fraud”.

The writer even went on to write that the United Nations has described Nigeria as the “hub of human trafficking; a source, destination and transit country”, that there are “mass killings going on in two Nigerian states right now and, according to the Human Rights Watch, the violence is being ignored by federal authorities”.

Well, galling as this may be, the website is not the only one that has attacked Nigeria. Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey did toe the same line some years ago, calling the country a “scammer’s haven”. With all these negative reviews Nigeria is getting, one is forced to ask himself/herself whether these things are happening in the country we know or some fictitious Nigeria.

Is there no good thing about Nigeria that the foreign media can talk about? What about our burgeoning music industry? What about our soldiers who act as peacekeepers the world over? What about our senior football team The Super Eagles who have recently woken up from their slumber to win the African Cup of Nations and qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup? There are many other positive things about this great nation. One cannot blame them, though. While some may think the website went too far, others think it’s a good thing. At least, they say, our leaders will do the right thing and fix Nigeria!

Imagine getting a top for 4500 only to realize that that same cloth can go for 1200 in the open day market. Imagine getting a wegde sandals for 6000 from Jumia, really thought i could use it to impress my date only for both sole of the sandals to pull off mid way on the road. I am not the only person that have complained about this. My friends colleague complained about the same thing that JUMIA DOES NOT GIVE VALUE FOR MONEY. Politics › Maiduguri Attacks: Military Suspects Insider Collaboration by omoharry(op):
The military authorities have commenced investigations into the attacks on the Nigerian Air Force Base and other military formations by the Boko Haram insurgents in the early hours on Monday .

A security source disclosed this to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday, just as the Nigerian Air Force deployed more fighter jets in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The military leadership and investigators are working on the suspicion that the daring attacks carried may have been facilitated by insider’s in collusion with the insurgents.

Investigations revealed that the leadership of the military was deeply concerned with the realisation that the incident took place at a time the Special Forces were planning one of the biggest offensives against the insurgents.

The security source, who confided in our correspondent, said that the motive of the attack was to weaken the operation or make it impossible.

The military authorities were said to have doubts that the timing of the attack could just be a coincidence.

It was further gathered that the Air Force Base and other targets of the Monday morning attacks were too strategic and fortified for insurgents to attack without information.

The military leadership, it was learnt, was further shocked by the discovery that the suspected terrorists planted Improvised Explosive Devices around the Air Force base and the 333 Artillery Regiment with the intent to ambush troops from carrying out rescue operations.

The source said that suspicion about insiders’ collaboration was further deepened by the puzzle over how the insurgents successfully planted the IEDs, which they exploded without being caught.

The military high command on Tuesday dispatched a high powered team of military strategists led by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, to ascertain the extent of the attack on the Nigerian Air Force base and other security formations and to report back to Abuja.

The team has not returned to Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

The source said, “We are believing strongly that this incident was made possible by insiders’ collaboration in terms of giving them information.

“You know, that place is very strategic. Another thing is that some final operations were being planned, which would have dealt a devastating blow on them and weakened them seriously.

“We believe that the aim was to distract and slow down that mission.

“The issue is: How did they get to the place to plant the IEDs, which they planted with the aim of preventing intervention and to ambush troops that tried to intervene.

“From the realm of information, there is a lot of what insiders could have done. It appears to be a well planned attack.”

Meanwhile, the authorities of the Nigerian Air Force on Tuesday deployed more fighter jets in Maiduguri to intensify the pursuit of the fleeing insurgents.

A security source who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said that the Special Forces spotted and killed some of the insurgents between Benisheik and Maiduguri.

The source said that the military had not collated the number of people killed as the operation involved mainly air strikes.

It was further learnt that the Boko Haram attack affected two helicopters with transparent floor considered critical to the surveillance activities of the Special Forces, especially along the long Maiduguri-Potiskum-Damaturu-Bauchi Road.

The attack also affected three unserviceable MIG fighter jets that were awaiting evacuation to the archives.

Calls to the telephone line of the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen Chris Olukolade, did not connect.

But the Director of Air Force Information, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas, told our correspondents on the telephone that the Air Force had replaced the damaged helicopters with a new helicopter and an MI35 fighter jet on Tuesday.

He added that an additional helicopter would be deployed by Friday.

Christianity Etc › UNBELIEVEABLE: Angola Reportedly Bans Islam, Destroys Mosques by omoharry(op): 12:38pm On Nov 25, 2013
According to several newspapers, the tiny African country of Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims.

The Angolan Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva was quoted by news agencies and Angola newspapers as saying, “The process of legalisation of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice.”

As part of the ban, the Angolan government ordered the demolition of the mosques in the country.

According to Silva, the decision was the latest in a series of efforts to ban “illegal” religious sects in the country. Silva’s statement was made during her appearance last week at the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.

According to the minister, the move was necessitated in order to fight the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradictory to the customs of Angola culture.

Not just Islam, many other faits which have not been legalised will face closure of their houses of worship.

Silva further said, “All sects on the list published by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in the Angolan newspaper ‘Jornal de Angola’ are prohibited to conduct worship, so they should keep their doors closed,” she was quoted by Cameroon Voice?.

“In addition, we also have a long list of more than a thousand legalization applications,” she added.

Speaking about it, Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said, “This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country.”

This is Africa, where it is seen as a man's world. You want to be in charge and be admired? then show the women what it is to be a man. The SIMPLE WORD HERE IS CALLED RESPONSIBILITY, SECURITY AND RESPECT.You can only command respect and be charge only when you are responsible and stable, in respective of how much you earn. The way you handle the little money available to you, makes big a difference. The problem with some Nigerian men in recent time is the fact that they are either lazy to work hard to earn some money, or too stingy to their girl friends.they don't even have their Pride we use to admire in them.Men should have some Ego please and should not be seen marrying women because of their money or family status.Majority of Nigerian men are guilty of this. So many opportunist hanging around now, may God help women that don't have good job or fat accounts. .

MEN-- Why do you always complain when women opt for richer men?. wont you do the same, if you had money? wont you sort for the most beautiful and successful woman of your class. when you are broke you start playing the victim but when you are rich then the true nature of unfaithfulness begins to unfold itself, even if you have the most beautiful and faithful wife ever.ABEG WAKA PASS.

ANYWAY, A MAN'S LOVE IS TESTED WHEN HE IS RICH WHILE A WOMAN LOVE IS TEST WHEN A MAN IS POOR. SEKENA.

What! did you just say people prefer cancer to HIV? That is a waoo!Cancer caught at an early stage and cured, i will say yes. Nobody prays for any sickness of any kind but just ask people who have cancer and undergoing treatment, you will see what they are going through. The experience of the the CHEMO and other treatment used, is not what you would wish your enemy to go through. What I understand is that HIV is highly stigmatized because society quickly assumes that everyone who contact it must have had it through sex or a reckless lifestyle. That is not so true. Society will only sympatize with a cancer patient than someone that has HIV, that is why you would say you believe someone would prefer having CANCER than HIV. However, nobody prays any of these sickness. But If i were left with no choice of choosing between HIV AND CANCER I would rather stick to HIV ; maintain healthy live style and still live a normal life like every other person.
Like you rightly said, HIV is just a name.
Ask some people, and they will tell you they prefer CANCER to HIV.
For their alleged links the Islamic terror group, Boko Haram, some soldiers are to face death penalty while others will go to jail. Those affected are one lieutenant, one warrant officer and 16 others. The General Court Martial has been trying them since July 1, this year. They were accused of offences ranging from communicating with Boko Haram members, cowardly behaviour, murder, to manslaughter. They were being tried by the Three Armoured Division as the case fell within its Area of Responsibility (AOR). A military source said that those soldiers who were sentenced to death actually deserved the sentence because “for serving soldiers who swore to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria and Nigerians therein to be found conniving with the enemies of Nigeria (Boko Haram) is a treasonable offence which attracts capital punishment. “The Boko Haram members do not hide their sinister agenda. They want to destabilize the country. Everybody knows that. For soldiers to now secretly work with them at the expense of the country is treasonable. And it is so treated.” - See more at: http://gistpage.com.ng/ng/forum/2815/b-r-e-a-k-i-n-g-news-18-soldiers-get-death-jail-sentences-ov#sthash.zA55fEOQ.dpuf

Christianity Etc › Vatican May Discuss Marriage For Catholic Priests by omoharry(op): 9:21am On Sep 13, 2013
pope In what is an unprecedented move, the Vatican has opened the door to the possibility of Catholic priests being allowed to marry.

For centuries Catholic Church tradition has required celibacy from priests. The Canon Law of the church states, “Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, and therefore are bound to celibacy, which is a special gift of God by which sacred ministers can adhere more easily to Christ with an undivided heart and are able to dedicate themselves more freely to the service of God and humanity.”

However, News Express on Thursday reported that Archbishop Pietro Parolin, the incoming Number Two leader in the Catholic Church when be becomes secretary of state next month, had declared that priestly vow of celibacy derived from an age-old rule but was not Catholic dogma.

“It’s not a dogma of the Church and it can be discussed because it’s an ecclesiastical tradition,” Archbishop Parolin told El Universal in Venezuela, where he is completing his term as Papal Nuncio.

This has been interpreted to mean that the church under reformist-minded Pope Francis I would welcome married priesthood if most Catholics so desire.

The number of priests has been declining steadily partly because of the rule on celibacy. In the United States alone, about 30,000 priests have left because they wanted to pursue a relationship.

“I think it would be an enormously welcome conversation,” Thomas Groome, a professor of theology at Boston College, USA, told interviewers. “I think Catholics, certainly American Catholics, but Catholics of the world, have been waiting for this conversation.”

Groome said that the idea of complete celibacy among the clergy only started to become standard practice in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.

He added, “As far as we can tell from the Gospels, all of the apostles were married, with the possible exception of John.”

Politics › Install Meters Or Stop New Tariff, NERC Orders Discos by omoharry(op): 12:19pm On Jul 26, 2013
WITH a tacit verdict that many of the distribution companies were violating the metering regulations, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered concerned electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to commence metering the consumers who have paid with immediate effect.

Giving them a 14-day ultimatum to submit a list of all customers who have paid for meters since January 2011,

NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, in a letter to the chief executives of the companies, warned that “any DISCO that does not comply with this new directive will be barred from collecting the new electricity tariff.

In that letter, dated July 19, the commission expressed utter dismay that all DISCOs have been in complete violation of the order as it relates to customers who paid within the given time-frame without being metered, noting that “NERC views this conduct as totally unresponsive, and undermining the effort of the reform.”

Earlier in the year, NERC had issued an order on Credited Advance Payment for Metering Implementation (CAPMI), which was its response to the lingering issue of non-issuance of meters by DISCOs. It enables interested customer to advance money to the electricity distribution company and in return, be given electricity credit until he or she recovers the cost of the meter.

The CAPMI order, among others, stipulates that all DISCOs forward to NERC the data of all customers who paid for meters but had not been supplied. Moreover, information from NERC indicates that in 2011, a N2.9 billion metering intervention fund was made available to the companies with a view to closing the unacceptable metering gap.

However, “one year after, no appreciable progress was made by the companies, and this compelled NERC to demand for performance reports from the DISCOs. Eight of the 12 DISCOs submitted reports that fell far short of the requirements of NERC. The rest did not submit any report of how they spent the money,” NERC noted.

NERC further warned the DISCOs that failure to comply with the 14-day ultimatum would also compel the commission to institute enforcement procedures that might lead to the removal of their chief executives.
