@ccollins,it is difficult for me to know precisely why Sartre said he failed, since those were his last words. Trying to post his biography here would be cumbersome because he was a man of many parts. Doing so will be like attempting to copy the Oxford Dictionary here! Jean Paul Sartre who was born in Paris on June 21, 1905 died on April 15, 1980. He was a philosopher, marxist, ex-soldier, prisoner of war, playwright, novelist, screen writer, biographer, literary critic, existentialist, political activist, and above all, an ATHEIST (capitals mine). Because he was an atheist, I can only deduce that Jean realised his folly when he probably saw God, his Creator, face-to-face, and death knocked! Vanity upon vanity. Any better answer to ccollins' question? |

THE LAST WORDS OF CHARLES V. KING of France 1380 : "Ay Jesus" |
I am worried. I am perplexed. Have you heard the news? That a 5-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself. Is this possible? Why? Why? Why? Ho o o o my God! |
