since no token like @ is being used to pick up a username, that (your thoughts) is most likely the way it is being implemented - considering the fact that the mentions feature is even kinda shitty and you do not even get notified all the time - .

Even if the @ token is used, it will be implemented by a preg match function when you run the "mentions" page.
The OP is more concerned about the notification which is done only when a user submits a post. Almost like realtime.

It is not bulky because its a computer that is doing it. If it were bad you woulda noticed it yourself when you post.
Even if nairaland is to have 1 billion users today, a good dedicated host server will still perform the action fraction of a second.

If you can inspect source code, you can start by recreating css of certain pages you like. Do it on your own system and test.
Jquery and bootstrap can come after you have started creating good looking pages.

Meanwhile, Bootstrap is a framework so also Jquery you create functional websites without them, especially bootstrap. So if anyone told you that you MUST learn them as a starter, that person might be trying to scare you or just ahead of himself.

Nkiru, if you see a beautiful website that you like, can you peep into the source code and CSS?
If the answer is yes, then you are one step closer to saying "Damn! Why did I have to spend all that money learning CSS and HTML".
If you can't do that, Google it!
Php and other server side scripting is different because some people are self taught others need guidance to learn it.

Contrary to reports in some quarters that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government earmarked the sum of N1.7 billion for feeding in the Presidential Villa, a copy of the relevant section of the 2016 Appropriation Bill obtained by The Herald showed that only about N114.97 million was earmarked.

Recall that rumour had pervaded the media space, especially the social media, that Buhari planned to surpass the amount spent by the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as many as four times.

A comparative analysis of the last administration’s total expenditure on “feeding” which included items like Food Stuff / Catering Materials Supplies, Cooking Gas/Fuel Cost, Refreshment & Meals, and Purchase Of canteen / Kitchen Equipment, in the last two years showed it allocated more funds than the new administration.

While the 2014 figure showed N542.86 million and the 2015 N526.17 million under former President Jonathan, the 2016 under Buhari is slightly lower, at N445.49 million.

OP why did you single out food stuffs now. When you guys were accusing GEJ of spending 6 billion did you single out food stuffs?

6.6 billion for GEJ last year include the costs of running the State House headquarters, the president’s office and the office of Vice President and this includes all the state visit and ceremonies but APC "Agents of Change" told the whole world that Jonathan is eating 6 billion naira food.

There's no doubt that Nnamdi Kanu is psychotic and it beats me why any sane human being will take him serious after listening to his radio.
I believe though he is never trying to appeal to the entire Igbo populace but rather illiterate, passive literate and poor ones among igbos. Just like what Donald Trump is doing in the US.
People like myself have been calling for his arrest when he is still largely unknown but like everything else in naija, they allowed him to garner enough followers from within the circle of people I mentioned earlier and now the gross mishandling of his trial has garnered him sympathy from outside that circle.
This is quite tragic because when someone like myself voice out my dislike for the continued flouting of court orders to release him, it will be difficult for anyone to actually believe that I am no fan of his.
By the way, even though I don't like Buhari so much, I believe that the Kanu guy committed sedition and a lot not just one treasonable offense either by his fraudulent drive to raise money for arms to fight Nigeria or openly calling the President some unmentionable names.

Why not put the image inside the div - .ads rather than give the image the class name.

You did set height for the image and thats why its squished.

If you set the height property, the image will be forced to fit into the box and that wont look good. You either set height or width not both.
Meanwhile pad the .pimg a bit (like 5px) so that the pictures wont be touching each other.

Well what I know how to do in PHP is resize the image giving it equal width and height

See what I would do.

I will return all images under that friend zone inside a div class named something like .pimg.

so the html will look like:

then my css will look something like:

width:140px;

This will make sure the images are all the same height though that of the girl for example will be 'cut' off after 120px. You wont get all the details in most pictures but at least your pictures will be aligned properly.

first before you start a web project, make sure you have total control over your domain name nd hosting. How do you do that? Make sure you personally purchase them by paying with your credit cards and signing up with your email ccount.
When you higher a developer you can then give him access to your server by only giving him the cpanel details which you must change after your works.
You should not try to cheat him becuse of all these because he caan always get to you if there are brekdown in reltionship nd you guys have poor aaagreement.
In summry, this guy might not be wrong with all you have said because websites can be hacked but what happens after that depends on the arrangement you have with the developer. It doesnt mean he must be the one to take full responsibilities whenever anything goes wrong. It all depends on what you guys agreed.
