ZURICH — Swiss authorities conducted an extraordinary early-morning operation here Wednesday to arrest several top soccer officials and extradite them to the United States on federal corruption charges. As leaders of FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, gathered for their annual meeting, more than a dozen plain-clothed Swiss law enforcement officials arrived unannounced at the Baur au Lac hotel, an elegant five-star property with views of the Alps and Lake Zurich. They went to the front desk to get keys and proceeded upstairs to the rooms. The arrests were carried out peacefully. One FIFA official, Eduardo Li of Costa Rica, was led by the authorities from his room to a side-door exit of the hotel. He was allowed to bring his luggage, which was adorned with FIFA logos. The charges, backed by an F.B.I. investigation, allege widespread corruption in FIFA over the past two decades, involving bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals, according to three law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the case. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/05/27/sports/soccer/fifa-officials-face-corruption-charges-in-us.html?smid=tw-nytimes&_r=0&referrer= |
The French army says it has seized 1.5 tonnes of drugs and a cache of weapons after stopping a convoy of militants in the desert in north-eastern Niger. Militants in two pickup trucks opened fire on French and Nigerien forces after refusing to stop at a checkpoint on 14 May, the French military said. Soldiers discovered the illegal cargo after a fire-fight in which three militants were killed, it added. France has 3,000 troops in the Sahel region to combat militant Islamists. Three other militants were also captured and handed over to Nigerien forces, the French army said in its statement. Widespread trafficking in the Sahel region is a major source of funding for militant Islamist groups across the continent, analysts say. Operation Barkhane, which comprises French forces as well as troops from Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, was established in August 2014 to stop the emergence of jihadist groups. The checkpoint where the incident took place is located in the Sahara desert in an area the French army describes as "an important transit zone between Libya and the northern Sahel". The Sahel includes some of the world's poorest countries but has rich natural resources in the form of minerals and gas. France sent troops to Mali in January 2013 after Islamist militants threatened to overrun the capital, Bamako. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32796372 |
Will the runner up be given the certificate of return by INEC? |
That General is such a joke!!!, how would u execute a coup without holding the presidential Palace, government radio and television networks.? All he could lay claim was holding the airport which any bloody civilian could do by packing a bus on the run way. He went on a private radio station to announce a coup that was not in existence. That coup was dead on arrival. When you execute a coup, u declare a curfew to test your authority..... To know whether u are in charge or not. He is learning it the hard way.... Besides no coup is planned in the country it is executed that too I think was lacking.. |

Hello I felt I should write you personally about the unfolding political landscape we find ourselves as Nigerians first of all. These are my opinion and my views which I am entitled to. In your last submission about Almakura in the governance of Nasarawa state which I am not an arm chair commenter because I have lived and worked in Lafia and covered a large area of the state in the course of my work. I was in Doma, Obi, keana, nas eggon, karu, akwanga and other smaller towns. It is important to state that the governor has done quite well on the area of road construction which come with accompanying Good drainage system of which I have only seen in Anambara state. The roads are solid!!. My first day in Lafia to pick the job, I turned it down and had to be begged to stay back. Development is a gradual process in the right direction. But one notion I want to correct you is on the issue of Almakura being Apc. Almakura has been Cpc which is the party on which manifesto he was elected to be governor. Same thing for Rivers, Kano, kwara. This is the dispensation in which the Apc manifesto will be used for governance and scrutinized to see if it works accordingly. Ascribing the achievement of Mimiko in ondo state to be that of Pdp is politically unfair and nit being honest to ourselves. I am a follower of macro economics and How political decisions affect our daily lives. It's unfortunate that most Nigerians have become intellectually lazy and have moved on with the band wagon that these politicians have put on the road. My thought is that for the first time, We have two political parties which are leaning to two economic blocs namely the capitalist and the socialist. Having studied the two, I chose to pitch my tent with capitalism. Let me add up here that I am not a card carrying member of ANY political party. my leaning is based on ideology. My view is that the APC has it's roots in the Action Group, The jamaar Talakawas that was in the 2nd republic and the cpc which is a new movement mainly by young, poor and underprivileged youths who are angry with the burgeorsies and want change. The need for change was so strong that the had their way. Now, let me Tell u my reservations. As a socialist party, the central belief is that government should create jobs, free education, free healthcare, social insurance, more generous pensions, create corporations etc. My opinion is that in the current economic clime with oil at $60 per barrel, a low taxation, high importations etc. The issues in Venezuela should come into sight, Cuba is another country whose socialism has failed them....Libya too. I feel it's time young and educated youths like you and I work out a road Map that works for us as Nigerians for Nigerians.there could be a balancing of the two ideologies just as China has done being a Communist one party state balancing with capitalism. I have been a strong advocate for the Chinese model in all facet of our national lives to tackle corruption, nepotism, employment, education etc. The Chinese model will work well in Nigeria because we have similarity in population. We are better placed than China because we are resource rich which China isn't. Capitalism and socialism could be balanced using the Chinese method. hope I did not bore you? Regards! |

I have deliberately refused to load my mtn. it's unfortunate that south Africans in Nigeria can't be easily distinguished because we are all blacks. |
Nigeria in talks to build nuclear power plant * Russia's Rosatom started discussion this April * Nigeria in dire need to ramp up power supply By Chijioke Ohuocha and Svetlana Burmistrova LAGOS/MOSCOW, April 14 (Reuters) - Nigeria is in talks with Russia's state-owned Rosatom to build nuclear power plants, as Africa's most populous nation tries to end of decades of blackouts that has blighted its economy. Africa's biggest economy has no experience in developing and operating nuclear power plants but has a gamma facility and small reactors producing around 30 kilowatts for research, Franklin Erepamo Osaisai, chief executive of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission said on its website, adding that nuclear power will guarantee long-term energy supply. "We have an intergovernmental agreement with Nigeria, but no concrete decisions have been made," a Rosatom spokesman said. One nuclear power plant costs between $5 billion to $8 billion, a source at the company said. 80 percent of Nigeria's power plants are gas-fired. Rosatom has a contract to build a new plant in Hungary and has agreed to build reactors in India and Kazakhstan. It is also planning to build more reactors in Iran in addition to the Russia-built Bushehr plant, Iran's first nuclear facility, launched there in 2011. Rosatom's investment programme, sourced from the state budget, allows it to spend about $300 - $ 350 billion per year to build nuclear plants in Russia and abroad, a business that has been hit by global safety concerns after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Nigeria, with a population of around 170 million, has installed power capacity that fluctuates between around 6,000 to just over 7,000 MW, according to the transmission company. South Africa's capacity is almost seven times greater for a population less than a third as big. Nigeria broke up its monopoly on power generation and distribution by privatising the sector two-years ago, hoping to attract foreign investors. But the amount of power produced has stagnated at around half total capacity. Some of the older plants, sold in October 2013, are in dire need of an upgrade while the fledgling generating firms lacking the cash as distributors struggle with non-paying consumers and inadequate gas supplies required to keep the plants running. Federalism, as practised in Nigeria since January 15, 1966, has been a major cause of discourse within the econo-political firmament of the polity. It would be recalled that Nigerians had in 1963 resolved, via a constitutional enactment, to live together under the principles of federal republicanism. The last constitution that was entirely made by the people of Nigerian gave autonomy to the federating units, which were four in number; Eastern Region, Mid-Western Region, Northern Region and Western Region, to exercise resource control over their respective regions, develop at their individual pace and pay royalties to the federal government for the maintenance of the military, police, customs, immigration, foreign services, population commission, aviation, railways and any other thing that was to be provided exclusively by the central government. The current 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has continued to attract public resentment, despite the few amendments it has gone through. Many Nigerians have been insisting that the people of Nigeria should be allowed the right of making for themselves a constitution that best captures their diversity. Two attempts have been made in the recent past to address the visible structural imbalance inherent in the 1999 constitution. In 2005, the then President; Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Organised what he named; National Political Reform Conference, which came to naught because of the general perception Nigerians had that he, truly or falsely, wanted to hide under the conference to elongate his tenure. President Goodluck Jonathan, still in response to the yearnings of Nigerians, set up a National Constitutional Conference in 2014 with the aim of allowing Nigerians produce a constitution they can conveniently and rightly call their own. The 2015 General election should have come and gone by now but for the ill-preparation of the Prof. Attahiru Jega-chaired Independent National Electoral Commission. From the look of things, a lot of bitterness, rancour and odium have been injected into the contest. The opposition All Progressive Congress, which Presidential candidate is a core Muslim Northerner, is fighting as if this is the last election that may be conducted in Nigeria. The Party is so desperate that one is forced to ask; is it the desire to provide service to the Nigerian citizens or is the Party being propelled by a hidden agenda? How be it, it is important to take cognizance of the fact that 2015 General election would be a determining factor in the politics of oil block allocation. Many of the oil mining and producing licences currently being held by few specially privileged Nigerians would expire in 2016. Man been whom he is, would like to do everything within his capability to make sure the licence is retained. Suffice it to say that discretionary allocation of Oil blocks to few privileged Nigerians was witnessed during the tenures of military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, General Sani Abacha, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and President Olusegun Obasanjo. In these discretionary allocations, signature bonuses that should have been paid to the Federal Government by the allotees, which run into billions of dollars, were unaccountably diverted to the powerful officials behind the discretionary gesture. The economic aftermath of this type of illegal diversion is that some individuals become, by far, richer than the state. This, no doubt, typifies the climax of corruption in Nigeria. A cursory look at just seven oil blocks is most likely to give an explanatory insight into the sham that is discretionary oil block allocation and why it is skewed to play a significant role in 2015 general election. Oil mining licence 110, with high yield open book estimate, was given to Cavendish Petroleum owned by Alhaji Mai Deribe, the Borno Patriarch, by his Kanuri Kinsman; General Sani Abacha, in 1996. Before the present crises in the oil sector, it had a capacity of more than five hundred million barrels of oil per annum, with a minimal gross revenue of fifty billion dollars per annum that could leave the owner with a minimal net income of twenty billion dollars per annum after paying taxes, royalties and sundry duties. Oil producing licence 246 was awarded to SAPETROL, owned by General Theophilus Danjuma, by General Sani Abacha in 1998. Before the present oil melt-down, this block was capable of exporting, at least, three hundred thousand barrels of crude oil on a daily basis. Is there any wonder why the most beautified high-rise buildings in Victoria Island in Lagos are owned by this Taraba state-born coup d’état enthuscated General? Oil mining licences 112 and 117 were awarded to AMNI Int. Petroleum Development Company, owned by Col Sani Bello, by his in-law; General Abdulsalami Abubakar, in 1999. Oil mining licence 115; Oldwork and Ebok Field, was awarded to Alhaji Mohammed Indimi by his in-law; General Ibrahim Babangida Oil mining Licence 215 is mined by North-East Petroleum Ltd, Owned by Alhaji Saleh Mohammed Gambo. Oil mining licence 108 is operated by Express Petroleum Company Ltd and is owned by Alhaji Amino Dantata of the Dantata’s financial dynasty of Kano. OML 113 is mined by Yinka Falawiyo Petroleum Ltd, owned by Alhaji W.I. Folawiyo and was given by former President Obasanjo. Asuokpu/ Umutu Marginal oil fields are mined by Seplat Petroleum Ltd, owned by Prince Nasiru Ado Bayero; a cousin to the Emir of Kano and immediate past Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria. On the same Vein, Intel Group of companies, jointly owned by former vice President Atiku Abubakar, Shehu Musa Yar’adua and Ado Bayero, has substantial stake in Nigeria’s oil exploration industry in Nigeria and Principe and Sao Tome. Mention should also be made of oil producing licence 245 which was awarded to Malabu Oil and Gas Company Ltd by General Sani Abacha, using Chief Dan Etete who was his oil minister as a front. Atiku Abubakar had, as Vice President, convinced President Obasanjo to revoke the licence in 2000 but Obasanjo changed his mind in 2006 and gave the oil block back to Dan Etete. From the above expose, any watcher that is capable of seeing beyond the cloud would quickly realize that 2015 general election transcends mere casting of votes. When the fact that many of the oil block licences will expire in 2016 is taken into consideration, people could now appreciate why there is much desperation and aggression by the opposition, especially those of them from the core Muslim North, to make sure that President Jonathan would not be re-elected. Jonathan, being a Nigerian of the Niger-Delta extraction, a geo- political zone that harbours more than seventy-five percent of oil wells in Nigeria and which people, so far, have not benefitted essentially from the discretionary oil block allocation, might be feared to be naturally inclined to re-write this glaring injustice that has manifested itself by way of oil block allocation by previous heads of government of Nigeria, none of whom hailed from the Niger- Delta geo-political zone.
