Panama president declares national holiday after historic World Cup qualification Panama's president has declared Wednesday a national holiday after the country secured World Cup qualification for the first time in their history. Hernan Dario Gomez's men looked set to miss out on even an intercontinental play-off spot as they were level 1-1 with Costa Rica in Panama City, the hosts having equalised as Gabriel Torres' close-range effort cancelled out Johan Venegas' opener for Costa Rica. That effort proved controversial as the ball looked to have failed to cross the line, but it appeared it would be inconsequential with the draw not enough to overhaul United States and Honduras beating Mexico 3-2. But, three minutes from time, Roman Torres sent Estadio Rommel Fernandez into delirium, the defender bursting on to a header forward and lashing the ball home to make history for Panama at the expense of USA, who lost 2-1 to Trinidad and Tobago. Panama progress to the finals, while Honduras' victory sends them into a play-off with Australia, and president Juan Carlos Varela has elected to let the country celebrate the historic moment for a further 24 hours. source |
A robbery suspect, Chukwuma Okoro, has narrated how his wife pushed him into robbery as a means of livelihood. Okoro said he particularly joined the robbery gang to enable him pay N300, 000 as bride price of his wife. The suspect, who said he is a vegetable seller, accused his wife of pushing him into robbery. He said “I am a vegetable seller here in Akure. It was my wife that pushed me into armed robbery. I have never stolen in my life. This is the first time. “My woman ran away from my house since three weeks ago. But she has been begging me to come back. So, I started looking for money to pay her dowry before she comes back.” “There was no way I could get more than N300,000 to pay her dowry as demanded by her family. That was why I tried to rob and it was the first time I would be doing it,” he said. Okoro was said to have been arrested by passers-by while attempting to rob a girl of a sum of N500,000 she was taking to the bank. The armed robbery suspect and three others were paraded by the Ondo State Police Command at its headquarters in Akure, the state capital. Other suspects paraded with Okoro were Ezenwa Raphael, Chukwudi Oruma and Thomas Onofuapo. Femi Joseph, the State Police Public Relations Officer, said Okoro and other suspects were among the armed robbers who had been terrorizing the state in the recent time. Joseph said: “Okoro attacked a sales girl who was going to the bank to deposit a sum N500,000. As he was struggling to collect the money from her, the girl raised the alarm that attracted passers-by who arrested him.” The police spokesman said a pistol and five live carriages were found on Okoro when he was arested. Saying the suspect would soon be charged to court, Joseph added that the command would continue to make efforts to stamp out criminal activities in the state. SOURCE

Senator Dino Melaye has noted that there are so many square pegs in round holes in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Melaye said Buhari’s selections were synonymous to someone wearing oversized shoes, adding that there were lots of nepotism in the President’s appointments. In an interview with Vanguard, Melaye, a chieftain of the ruling party, said, “Let me tell you, in this government, we have square pegs in round holes. “You cannot give carpentry work to a tailor and you expect him to perform. We need to rejig the economy managers of this nation because you cannot give what you don’t have. “Cabinet reshuffle has to do with the ministers. We have strategic positions in this country that is manned by wrong people; a coach is as good as members of his team. “The President cannot be minister of petroleum, Minister of Internal Affairs but if he has good aides, the economy will move because these people will be working within their terrain. “If a tailoring work is given to a carpenter, the output will be a beautiful nonsense. “The president must rejig his appointments. The president should forget about politics and bring out people with vigour, better hands that will get the job done. Such people should be involved in the process irrespective of the party they belong or their tribes. “The SGF misbehaved because he has never worked in any public service in his life before becoming the SGF. “The SGF of a country is the manager of the entire process of Governance. A man that is not imbibed and indoctrinated in the act of civil administration or the rudiments of public administration, definitely he will misbehave. “His appointment is synonymous to someone wearing an oversized shoe and this is applicable to other appointments in this government, there are a lot of nepotism in appointment in this government. “Like I told you earlier, it’s not all about party. Even the president is not an APC president but the president of the federal republic of Nigeria including the witches and wizards of this country. He is the president of everybody. Development process is national and no one should be partisan about it. “If you find a good man in PDP or APGA that can do the job perfectly, appoint him or her in the interest of National development than to bring an APC man that has no idea of what to do. “Today in this country there is an organization headed in this country by a lawyer, what do we expect from such appointment? We have ministers that have no cognate experience at all on where to serve.” SOURCE

Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed has described the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as “bastards” if they can’t cause another civil war, in their struggle to actualize Biafra. He said this while noting that people of the South-East and the group should have learnt their lessons from the last civil war and try to prevent another one. Speaking with The Sun, the former lawmaker and social commentator said after losing over one million people to the war, people of the South East should not think of another civil war. According to Mohammed, “We have to be very careful. We know the history of those who are making agitations in Lagos. At first, they told the Igbo: ‘Go. When you go, we would go.’ The Igbo left. You know what happened? They took over all Igbo premises, all Igbo businesses, Igbo bank accounts. “If Igbo are not stupid, will they like to go and do the same thing again? It was MKO Abiola who said that if you volunteer your head for some people to break coconut, you will not be alive to eat the coconut. “The Biafra side lost about one million people and all the destructions. If the IPOB people want to try it again, I challenge them to try it. If they don’t try it, they are bastards. Let’s see what happens.” The former lawmaker also faulted claims that Northern governors were speaking on behalf of the whole region as regards restructuring. He said, “First, I don’t speak for any governor. And as a politician, I have nothing but contempt for all Nigerian governors. If you think those so-called Northern governors speak for the North, you are deceiving yourself. When the chips are down, those who speak for the North will emerge. “I believe no governor speaks for the North. If you think they speak for the North, why don’t you say the governors in the South-south speak for their geo-political zone? Why must you say it is the Northern governors who speak for the North? “As far as I am concerned, I am prepared to engage in the debate on restructuring only if those who are clamouring and agitating for it can tell us what it is they want by restructuring and they define it so that somebody like me can understand. I am not prepared to engage in a discussion with people who are fundamentally dishonourable and dishonest." SOURCE

A suspected notorious kidnapper, robber and murderer, Justice Oti, aka High Tension, has alleged that a Rivers lawmaker is a member of his gang. Oti, an indigene of Odisama in Ahoada East Local Government, who was born on March 7, 1993, admitted being a member of Icelander cult, saying he killed 15 members of a rival Greenlander cult. He said yesterday in Port Harcourt that he killed because members of Greenlander killed over 15 Icelander members. Oti, who embraced the amnesty offer of the Governor Nyesom Wike administration, said he did not completely surrender his arms and ammunition, adding that Greenlander members never submitted their guns, but only deceived members of the amnesty committee by surrendering sticks. The suspected kidnapper, who was arrested in Bauchi State, said he killed people during reprisals. He was, however, silent on the roles played by the Rivers lawmaker in his gang. Oti said when his deputy, Lucky aka Iron, was killed by the rival cult and his head was cut and taken away, with the Greenlander members threatening to also kill him, he escaped to Bauchi State after hiding his AK-47 rifle and ammunition in his village. The police command has written to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, to release the Rivers lawmaker for interview by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS), headed by Mr. Akin Fakorede. The letter, obtained through a source close to Police Commissioner Zaki Ahmed, was dated October 9, with the command indicating that it was investigating cases of kidnapping and murder in Ahoada East Local Government involving Oti and members of his gang. It also indicated that inviting the Rivers lawmaker was to facilitate the command’s investigation, with the Speaker asked to release the lawmaker for interview with the commander of F-SARS on October 12 at noon. The legislator was contacted for his reaction through his mobile line, from 6:44 pm., but he did not pick his calls. An SMS sent to him was not responded to last night. Ahmed said his command had zero tolerance for crimes. Also paraded yesterday was Blessed Francis, a 20-year-old 200 level Geology student of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), who was arrested in Port Harcourt for alleged burglary and robbery, barely three months after another UNIPORT undergraduate, Ifeanyi Dike, was arrested for alleged ritual killing. He is still standing trial. A gang of an alleged three gun-running youths, comprising two ND-2 students of Rivers State Polytechnic, Port Harcourt, Frank Nwaaknma, 22, from Ibaa, Emohua Local Government and Ujie Francis, from Obudu in Cross River State, was also arrested. The third member of the gang, Chigozie Junior Koro, 32, from Ogbakiri in Emohua Council said he and Nwaaknma only wanted to assist Francis (Ujie) to sell for N100,000, a pistol he claimed to have picked during a communal clash in his village, with a promise to give them N10,000, before they were nabbed by the police. A 27-year-old suspect, Daniel Okpougo, an indigene of Edoha in Ahoada East Local Government, who was arrested with ammunition, alleged that High Tension (Oti) killed his uncle and he travelled to Patani in Delta State to buy bullets to avenge his death, before he was arrested on East West Road. Others held for crimes include Loveday Opi, an indigene of Egbema in Ogba/Egbeme/Ndoni Council and Sunday Didia, who hails from Egbeda in Emohua Local Government, both in Rivers State, as well as Kingsley Ofomata from Imo State, John Elvis, an indigene of Auchi in Edo State and Chimankpa Ukomwa from Orlu in Imo State. The Nigerian Military on Tuesday, denied report that over 30 soldiers were executed in an ambush on Friday by members of the Islamic State militants (ISIS) helping some Boko Haram sect, loyal to them in a recent encounter in northern Borno. In a statement from Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, Deputy Director Public Relations, Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole, he said nothing of such took place. The statement reads: “The attention of the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole has been drawn to a news article published online by Almardanews.com (AMN), in which one Chris Tomson claimed ISIS had in an ambush against Nigerian Army convoy, executed 30 soldiers on Friday afternoon. “It is very pertinent to state here, that contrary to the report, there was no such attack or ambush on any convoy of troops of operation Lafiya Dole by ISIS or any other adversary within or outside the theatre of operation. “The said report is not only false but another media propaganda and an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists to remain relevant and portray seeming potency. “The graphic images used to support the article has been closely studied and found to lack nexus to any recent operational engagements of operation Lafiya Dole. “The photographs culled from “only god knows where” are not a reflection of recent operational encounters of Lafiya Dole. The concocted story is therefore unsubstantiated and lacks credibility. “Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole did not at any time have an encounter with ISIS terrorists, neither have they suffered from such fictitious attack as claimed. “This points to the desperation of the Boko Haram terrorists group to create awe and hold the people captive psychologically. “Undoubtedly, the article and the graphic images are a bundle of unprofessionally packaged falsehood aimed at misinforming the general public by creating fear in the minds of people and building an aura of false potency around the terrorists. This can better be described as one of the last kicks of a drowning terrorists group. “Looking back at the activities of Operation Lafiya Dole in the just concluded week; own troops have continued to sustain devastating attacks on the Boko Haram terrorists in precursor operations in the north east. “Aside neutralizing their hideouts in the fringes of the Nigerian-Nigerien border through coordinated air and artillery bombardments, own troops recently killed 2 fleeing Boko Haram terrorists in an ambush at Futchinam village in Geidam Local Government area of Yobe State. “Troops also killed 3 insurgents in another ambush in Lingir village where they recovered 5 AK 47 rifles, 5 magazines and 11 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition. Own troops have dominated the theatre of operation and have denied Boko Haram terrorists freedom of action, hence the resort to the propagandist news on AMC. “Members of the public are enjoined to discountenance this mischievous publication as it lacks the least iota of truth. It is also imperative to seize this opportunity to remind Chris Tomson and Amardanews, that “publicity is the oxygen of terrorism”, therefore the need to thoroughly investigate and give a balance report is of paramount importance in the credibility of any journalist and media organization.” Source

À woman identified as Augustina Ihugba has thrown her community of Akwakwuma in Owerri North Council Area of Imo State in a mournful mood after she allegedly bathed her husband ,Raymond Ihugba with raw acid which eventually killed him . A close source of the family who recounted the incident said that the late husband aged 50, a mason by profession and father of 4 have been in serious issues of allegations of extra marital affairs by his wife which he had constantly denied before his wife took her decision of permanently ending the issue. Already the remains of the victim had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri pending police investigation and the consummation of his burial arrangement. The mother of the deceased-Eunice Ihugba who tearfully gave an insight of the gory incident, disclosed that trouble erupted between Raymond and Augustina when the latter began to make financial demand on her son despite his lean resources. The embattled widow who lost her husband – Fidelis during the Nigerian/Biafran Civil war said that persistent pleadings by Raymond with his wife Augustina to bear with him for his inability to meet her frequent financial demands consequent upon the raging recession proved abortive . This, according to her ignited frequent quarrel between them while all her efforts and those of the relations of her daughter in-law to arrest the ugly situation failed. According to her, the rancor, bitterness and acrimony which had rankled in Augustina for months came to the fore when unknown to Raymond, she had armed herself with acid, trailed him to a place at Ubomiri, in the Mbaitoli council area of the State where he (Raymond) had erected a structure for his family to live in. On sighting him, she said that Augustina instantly rushed at him and poured the acid on him and quickly took to her heels. The hapless Raymond was immediately rushed to the emergency ward of the FMC Owerri from where he was transferred to the ward 10 of the hospital where he eventually gave up the ghost. fighting back tears from her eyes as she narrated ,she added that the suspect was in the habit of stealing her husband’s money because of her ostentatious life style and inordinate desire for the good things of life but which her son Raymond was not prepared to tolerate. A staff of the FMC Owerri, who craved for anonymity attributed the death of Raymond to the strike embarked upon by the doctors; stating that he could have been salvaged if the relevant medical wizards had been around to handle his case. The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Charles Osuji who confirmed the incident described it as an abomination. The monarch while assuring that efforts would be made to apprehend the fleeing culprit and bring her to book advised residents of the tension soaked community to remain calm and allow the police to handle the matter. The Vice President told the gathering that as part of the present administration ’ s efforts to diversify power sources in order to improve access, it had started a programme of providing solar power in 20 , 000 homes in rural villages. The said the fortune of residents of Wuna village , outside Abuja, where the project commenced from , had improved drastically with night life returning to the village , which hitherto shut down at about 7 pm until daylight. Osinbajo stated that the Federal Government invested N 1 . 3 tn in infrastructure in 2016 , making it the largest capital spending in the country’ s history . He added that the government was ready to increase the figure in the 2018 budget . He said , “Strong visionary leadership committed to good governance has proved to be critical where our economies have recorded successes . Nigeria earning 60 per cent less revenue than five years ago , last year invested N 1 . 3 tn in infrastructure, the largest capital spending in its history and will increase that in the 2018 budget. “Good governance and prudent management of resources means that you can do more with less . Ethiopia delivered its light rail and within Addis Ababa ahead of schedule and with no cost overruns . “Rwanda has shrugged off the tragedy of the genocide of barely 20 years ago, delivering on infrastructure and earned its place as the second easiest place to do business in Africa . Ghana is galloping away with GDP growth figures this year of nine per cent . “Across the entire continent , there is a commitment to providing much -needed infrastructure in the form of power stations , ports, rail networks and roads that not only bring down the cost of doing business, but also actively engage the private sector in funding , operation and or ownership. ” Osinbajo said Nigeria recently announced the commencement of the process for the concession of its major airports with a view to attracting world- class investors. He added that wisdom today was in letting the private sector invest wherever it could and in practically any sector of the economy. Osinbajo listed the ingenuity and resilience of the people , especially the 70 per cent youth population , leadership and good governance , allowing the private sector and markets to function , focusing on infrastructural development , and the incredible opportunities that abound as some of the factors that make Africa work . He said in addition to ongoing investments in production and infrastructure, the Federal Government was undertaking extensive ease of doing business reforms . He stated that the government had worked assiduously to improve the macroeconomic conditions . After a continuous decline in growth since 2014 , Osinbajo said the trend of growth in the Gross Domestic Product had turned around with a modest growth of 0 . 5 per cent in the second quarter of this year , while inflation , though still somewhat high , had declined from a peak of 18 . 7 per cent in January 2017 to about 16 presently. He added , “The outlook going forward is quite positive based on improvements in oil prices and production , and the trend of leading indicators such as positive Purchasing Managers ’ Indices, a revived stock exchange and increasing foreign exchange reserves . “Moreover, the uncertainties in the foreign exchange market have abated with the introduction of a new window for investors and exporters , which gives more transparency and guarantees repatriation of funds . ” The Vice President stated , “The results have been encouraging as the inflows of capital in the second quarter of 2017 of about $ 1 . 8 bn were almost double the amount of $ 908 m imported in the first quarter of the year. “Indeed, investor interest remains undoubtedly strong with announced investments of $ 22 . 42 bn from January to August 2017 in 41 projects across 22 states . Importantly, for the first time , coordinated efforts are underway to make it easier to do business in Nigeria . “Through systemic changes , we are repositioning regulators as facilitators of business, and are steadily improving transparency and efficiency of service delivery by the public sector . ” Osinbajo said the Federal Government was intent on bringing about rapid , sustainable and inclusive growth in order to improve the lot of its dynamic and hardworking people . He noted that the government realised that the scale of the challenge was huge given the country ’ s large and rapidly growing population and the relentless march of progress in other parts of the world. According to him , the government is nevertheless determined and optimistic that Nigeria will , along with the rest of the continent , bring about an Africa that works for all its people and contributes to global growth and prosperity . “Three lessons that Africa has learnt in the past few years , first diversification from resource -based revenues , second private sector and markets are key , and creating the right environment is not optional , ” he concluded. New PayTV operator, Telecom Satellite Television, TSTV, weekend, disclosed that it would commence commercial roll-out of its decoders to Nigeria by November 1, 2017. Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Bright Echefu, said the company would from Monday, deploy about 5,000 decoders to customers for free, and would also be installed for the customers to enable them test the reception, services and claims of the company. He explained that the delay in the commercial deployment of decoders to customers was to prevent sabotage by unscrupulous elements who would want to frustrate the company. He said, “We have not commenced commercial sales of our decoders because we are aware of the fact that we are running a business easily frustrated by competition. “We had applications from over 3,000 individuals who want to be our dealers, so far we have cleared about 750 of the dealers. We are currently conducting due diligence checks on our dealers. We do not want a situation where individuals posing as dealers buy up our decoders and go dump them somewhere.” He said within the next two weeks, the verification and full accreditation of dealers would be completed and the decoders would be rolled out. Mr Christian Nwosu, a former official of the Independent national electoral commission(INEC) shocked a Lagos federal high court on Friday when he revealed that officials of the Economic and financial crimes commission, EFCC, forced him to admit receiving N30 million from embattled former petroleum minister, Diezani Allison Madueke. PoliticsNGR learned that Mr Nwosu, a former admin secretary of the electoral commission also claimed the EFCC coerced him into forfeiting N5 million cash and his property worth N30 million. He told the Justice Mohammed Idris that an EFCC official named Zakari Usman threatened to detain him if he didn’t write a testimony he(Usman) would like to hear. Quoting him; “On the 28 of December, I was invited to EFCC, interviewed by one Mr Moses and I made statements. He was about to let me go but he said his boss will want to see me. When Mr Zakari came and read my statement, he said no, I have not written what he wants to hear and that he has signed my detention order form and was going to detain me and that even if I bring 10 lawyers, they won’t help me except I write what he dictates to me, he was going to keep me. He told me that Adedoyin had admitted collecting N28million and was released; that being a senior officer, there was no way I wouldn’t not have benefitted by collecting up to N30million (sic). He said unless I stated that I benefitted N30million, he would dump me in the cell. I quickly told him I benefitted. He dictated to me that I should write it; I did. I knelt before Rotimi and he said: ‘Baba get up; I’ll only advice you to cooperate with us. He said he would not want me to go through the stress of litigation. He asked if I had landed property and cars. He said I should write out the property worth N30million that I had. He said he would ensure that I was convicted and jailed at all cost if I didn’t cooperate." SOURCE |

Former Director -General of the Institute of Agricultural , Research and Training , Prof Benjamen Ogunmodede, has said that he and two other persons convicted alongside him spent N 177 m to bribe lawmakers and some employees of the Federal Ministry of Finance . Ogunmodede and two staff members of the IAR& T were, on Tuesday , sentenced to 40 years in prison without an option of fine by a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan. They were convicted of mismanaging funds meant for the payment of salaries and execution of projects in the school . The other two convicted persons were the institution’ s account staff members, Zacheus Tejumola and Adenekan Clement. The three individuals were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2011 on 16 - count bordering on conspiracy, unlawful conversion, stealing of school subvention among others. While giving the judgment , Justice Ayo Emmanuel said each of the convicted persons would spend four years for each of the charges they were guilty of, adding, however , that they would spend the jail term concurrently . Ogunmodede and others were accused of diverting N 177 m out of a subvention of N 600 m released by the Federal Government for the school. The sum ( N 177 m ) was said to have been spent without due process. In their defence , the convicted persons claimed that a huge part of the money was used to bribe members of House of Representatives and some staff of the Federal Ministry of Finance who facilitated the release of the fund for the research institute . But Justice Emmanuel ruled that Ogunmodede and others were clearly guilty of the charges preferred against them. He said that bribery and money laundering were illegal activities that had been prohibited in the country and that they were punishable under the law . The judge said the sentence would serve as deterrence to people in public position who might wish to mismanage public fund. “We must have it in our mind that the primary reason for sentencing a guilty person is to serve as a deterrence to those with similar criminal tendencies and for rehabilitation of the accused . “The two reasons are sociological in nature, ” he said . Ogunmodede’ s counsel , Tunde Olupona , from the chambers of Rotimi Akeredolu , said the legal team would review the ruling and decide on the next step . EFCC ’ s lead counsel , Nkereuwem Anana , said the judgment was an indication that the war against corruption was being won in the country , noting that the judgment would send a message to others who are mismanaging or embezzling public funds that the long arm of the law would one day catch up with them . |
The Lagos state police have arrested a 57-year-old herbalist, Tunde Ajibolorunsoro, aka professor, for allegedly abducting a five-year-old girl in the Meiran area of the state. Tunde is said to have sold the victim, Aishat Muyideen, to his neighbour, Tajudeen Makanjuola, who is also a herbalist, for N60,000. It was gathered that Aishat went missing on Wednesday, September 25, 2017. The state Commissioner of Police, Edgar Imohimi, disclosed that the professor led police operatives to arrest Makanjuola.
