Please if you didn't take the time to read it, refrain from commenting on it so that there won't be a "pragma-linguistic misfire", or misunderstanding. If you aim is to derail the thread, just know that you are free to but I won't help you to do that. This article is just an OPINION, directed more towards the Federal Government than anyone else.

I don't have much to say here. You've done good justice to this matter. I must confess, I'm glad about this present stance of yours. Nigeria is not working and will never work like this. Something just has to give and this CHANGE we seek will be of benefit to the generality our people.

They exist independently in both languages. Agege is from old Urhobo. Most likely means "let's protect him". It's original meaning, like many other Urhobo names such as Okumagba, etc, is a subject of conjecture only. But based on the principles of Linguistic derivation and etymology, it should be close to what I just wrote.

You, Mcowubaba and Pazienza keep quoting me as an anti-Igbo. Let me tell you something about humans:

Nobody is born a tribalist. It is something that is learnt, basically from experience or observation. In my state, I had always known Igbos right from nursery school. I grew with Igbos, schooled with them up till university level and still work with them today. I don't have issues with Igbos.

Ever since this Biafran agitation started, Igbos have been going around creating enemies of people due to their uncouth, careless and arrogant statements. One of the most arrogant statement by Biafrans is that the ENTIRE SOUTH-SOUTH is part of Biafra. As an Urhobo, I find such statements offensive to my people and myself. I am not Igbo! I do not speak Igbo! and my people share nothing in common with Igbos! Why then do the Igbos, especially those on Nairaland, go around peddling falsities that the entire South-South (of which Urhoboland is a part of) is part of the Igbo Biafra?

When I started confronting Igbos with civility on this issue, they attacked me, insulted me and my ethnicity, threatened me, stalked me, and made enemies of myself and my people. That is not how to live! Dissenting opinions will always reign even amongst yourselves. Don't expect an entire ethnicity to support your cause just because of proximity with them. You guys should learn diplomacy like my brother, Jerrypolo, said. I know an Urhobo here, Opharhe, who is pro-Biafra well enough. I know of others too. Just because they sympathise with Biafra doesn't mean they have FORCED Urhoboland into Biafra and neither do they intend to. However, how do you expect them to feel when they and their ethnicities are insulted just because we expressed our FREEDOM to REJECT a CAUSE that has NOTHING to do with us? Do you now see how you guys make anti-Biafrans and even anti-Igbos out of pro-Biafrans and indifferent people?

You may think of me as the enemy but I have not done even a quarter of what IGBOS have done on this forum alone. Igbos have issues with every ethnicity but themselves. They'll turn around and harass the minorities that reject their cause, calling them Igbophobic, instead of arguing like sane people. Maybe you guys need to check yourselves very well. All I have done on Nairaland is to tell Igbos and Igbos that Urhobos are not interested in Biafra and I do so with the backings of valid statements by Urhobo leaders. How is that a crime against Igbos? How have I insulted Igbos by defending Urhobo from those who would wage war on us for telling them NO?

Never for once have I insulted Igbos without due provocation. Why don't you guys speak to your online trolls like hammer6, GodisBiafran, Freemancipation, etc, to tone down their hate. Why don't you guys speak against Nnamdi Kanu to tone down his hate and to stop including non-Igboid Southerners to his plans? Why don't you guys speak out on the hate being spread by Igbos online every blessed day?

You guys love to blame Yorubas, Hausas, Urhobos, Itsekiris, etc, for your problems without realising that tthe greatest threat to Ndiigbo are the Nddigbos themselves! Hate me or love me; threaten me or chastise me; call me names or insult my ethnicity; the point has been made that Urhobos are not interested in Biafra. And I WILL CONTINUE MAKING THIS POINT UNTIL IT SINKS IN TO ALL BIAFRANS! I don't go about creating enemies. Never for once have I had issues with Yorubas, Hausa, etc, on Nairaland. Why always Igbos? Search yourselves and deal with your perennial problems before you call others names.
That was a great response. Welldone brother.

Are you saying the Urhobo leadership just got this claim from the blues? Haven't you seen the videos of Nnamdi Kanu mentioning other non Igbo groups like Urhobo, Isoko even Igede and Tiv up North as part of his prospective Biafra? You have some checking to do if you've not seen, read or heard such.

I can see you typing "anuofia" there, but you see, you have to change your ways, you online Igbos especially.
The truth is there are a sizable number of Biafra apologetics among the Urhobo you insult and even across Nigeria now. Maybe you're forgetting that in social and political struggles like this, external support is very important... It's not just about those who call themselves Biafrans alone. There are many Igbo-Biafrans out there who present their arguments in very intelligent and logically satisfactory ways(I know a number like Remy Ilona, Francis Duru etc). I advise you to follow that path.

If you like insult me, I don tell you the plain truth.

Thank you.

I don't really care what you think of Urhobos man. No hard feelings. I could say the same of Igbos and how I feel towards all of them.

But make no mistake of assuming that the Itsekiris actually want to be a part of your Biafra! In fact, I doubt if Itsekiris like Igbos. I don't want to speak for them so I've tagged Itsekiris on Nairaland to say it themselves.

CC:
Wirinet, Onuwaje, Efewestern, Jolomiurenyi, Sanchez01, Opharhe

Mind you, IPC is a known body in Itsekiriland and this is not the first time that Itsekiris have denouced Biafra. The Olu himself (apex leader of Itsekiris) has come out to denouce Biafra sometime in 2015.
Thanks mathy. Urhoboland cannot be part of Biafra. We were never part of it initially, and we will not be part or it this time if their struggle becomes successful. You don't just include people in your maps without consultation. It doesn't make any sense.
There's now an official stand on this issue by the Urhobo people and hence I don't even worry much about it.
The Urhobo leadership have come out to denounce it and so does it stand.

To me, If Biafra finally comes, I feel what they will end up with(initially at least) will be different from what most maps carry today. Some parts of the old eastern region(original Biafra) may not even go with them.
There's also the possibility of adding some parts too(like western Igbo areas of Delta State).

Let's just keep fingers crossed. However, it's not just enough for us to denounce Biafra but we must proactive and plan ahead in order not to be taken by surprise IF disintegration takes place.

Politics / Re: We Don’t Want Restructuring - Governor Umahi by Opharhe: 11:25am On Jun 29, 2017
Sanchez01:

Oniovo, I'd be Frank with you, most states might not survive restructuring, contrary to the opinion of many. Ebonyi, though a state that prides itself in agriculture, would find it difficult to survive under a restructured Nigeria. The same goes for Enugu as coal won't be enough.

I would no doubt prefer a restructured Nigeria but the truth is that most states are not really ready. Some Northern states might not be able to survive on their own as well.
Oniovo you're saying this based on what we have now since most states have not tapped into their potential for wealth creation. Even the Niger Delta is not really doing anything apart from oil. How much fish do we produce? In our own Delta State for example, how much have we maximized our water resources? There are a lot more.
Ebonyi not only has agriculture, it also has good minerals that can be explored. A very good example is limestone.

Again, restructuring Nigeria will not be an automatic death sentence for the less economically viable states because the terms, I believe, will be flexible and will allow for a gradual and progressive return to self sustainance for the federating units.

Also, many people are arguing for a regionally integrating system(State-Regional-Federal tiers) and this makes some good sense since some states may not be economically viable.

But if we're sticking strictly with the state system, some will have to merge. For example, Ebonyi can merge with Enugu.

Restructuring is about all facets of our national life and not just about the economic and fiscal structure which many who oppose it will want to limit it to for their convenience.

The 1999 constitution just has to be abandoned and replaced with a better one, a true constitution by the people, if we want to progress or this country will progressively derail until we can no longer save it. Something just has to give.

Wẹ kobiruo, oniọvo mẹ.

Whether you like it or not, Nigeria must be restructured or disintegration will become inevitable.

Okpe leaders will never allow Okpe nation leave Urhobo, no matter how much their youths shout about it. The leaders are the one benefitting from the confederation.

Secondly; the average Okpe person will run to Urhobo when in trouble and then deny Urhobo when it is all over. Everything that Okpe is today was because of UPU. UPU helped Okpe in the Sapele land case, the position of Okpe as almost number 1 in Urhobo voice, the location of the defunct Urhobo province in Orerokpe, the creation of Okpe and Sapele LGAs, etc.

Many of them have forgotten so soon. Look at the Isokos that broke off now. Is their isolation in Delta South helping them? Okpeland is far more developed than Isokoland. What has their division of Urhobo nation yielded for them?

In fora like this online or offline, you present your arguments sensibly and try to keep it civil as much as possible. That way both sides of the matter including the neutrals gain more and the discourse can be sustained.
Even me sef, who's more of a Biafra sympathizer, the day I'll just type something that doesn't follow the popular opinion among Biafrans here, I automatically become an "Afonja" Na wa o.

Support for Biafra is growing among non-Igbos and others across the length and breadth of this country for obvious reasons. Biafrans should not lose that because you need it. Kanu himself still talks about external support here.

fratermathy:
While he made some good points on the state of the Nigerian nation, he is at best very idealistic on the Biafran issue. He acknowledged that multi-ethnicity is one of the problems with Nigeria yet he blatantly referred to the Niger Delta (including the many non-Igboid tribes -and even mentioning Itsekiri & Isoko) as "Southern Biafra". Such delusion and audacity are among the reasons why Biafra may never be a reality any time soon.

He said so many things; mainly utopic in nature. However, he did not state the framework for which Biafra will operate its federal structure. It is not just about granting ethnicities their own regions. That will not solve all of the problems. There are core issues that need to be addressed in a federation and he never spoke one bit about any of them. Rather he was boasting about making Lokoja a "seaport" and "dredging the river Niger". Making it seem like he is campaigning to the Tiv and other Middle Belt groups.

For someone who wants Biafra so much, he paid more attention to Nigeria, Tinubu, Mohammed, and the North. He exuded more of a personal angst and vendetta against Nigeria and Nigerians, rather than a genuine love for Biafra.

Finally... All I can say is that this interview has reinforced my conviction that the Biafra agitation, as it is now, is nothing more than blatant idealism by misguided youths, led by a delusional man whose main justification for the struggle is his hatred for the Hausa-Fulani and the "Zoo", as he puts it.
Oniọvo mi yeru we ọ, wẹ kobiruo.
You see, this man has a lot of work and improvement to do on his carriage as a person, especially considering what he stands for. But you see, Kanu has a stronger and more logical argument anytime, anyday. I know he mentioned Urhobo, Isoko, Itsekiri.. Just as he's mentioning Tiv, Idoma, Igede etc as possible parts of Biafra grin
But as for the "Southern Biafra" point you've talked about, the man Nnamdi Kanu is correct. Yes.

1. Remember that Biafra as declared by Ojukwu, was synonymous to the Eastern Region then and there you have the Ibibios, Ogonis etc which he specifically mentioned when he was talking about the minority commission thing. Again, observe that he regretted these "Southern Biafrans" accepting that "British Idea" of "removing the minorities from the dominion of the Igbo". The agitation was on grounds of agitations going on already before the War... We in the Mid-West already had ours successfully but other "minority" areas like the Northern Middle Belt(the Tiv in particular) and the Niger-Delta(excluding Delta and Edo) were also pushing for theirs. But they had not succeeded in getting their own region before the coups and counter coups came in.

The Tivs wanted the Middle Belt Region and the "Niger Deltans" wanted the COR State(s). COR is Cross-River, Ogoja and Rivers. Adaka Boro even declared a Republic of the Niger Delta. It was on this foundation that the Gowon's FG created the old Cross-River State and Rivers state as part of the strategy to Checkmate Ojukwu and the Igbos during the strife.

Our own side in the Mid-West(Urhobo, Isoko, Edo, Ijaw, Itsekiri etc). was not part of this. The term "Southern Biafra" is correct in a political sense here... Unless of course, the people don't want to be associated with that name(Kanu's regret) which is true of some of the Ethnic groups there.
So, yes Kanu was correct on that.

2. We should be reminded also that Biafra(the name appears like having an Igbo origin) got it's name from the areas of the coast lying East in the Gulf of Guinea known as Bight of Biafra. Just like we have the Bight of Benin(named after the Benin Kingdom) along the coast around our area from where today's Republic of Benin get it's name.

These names were given to these areas by the Europeans and used by them in maps and all that for hundreds of years before Nigeria came into existence. So the term, "Southern Biafra" is still correct even in a geographical sense. This is so because the lands of these ethnic groups of Ibibio, Ijaw, Ogoni etc of the old Eastern region are closer to the coast and are, in most cases, directly bounded at Sea by the Bight of Biafra. So the guy Kanu(the guy no dey calm down talk most times which I dislike) is not really wrong or outrightly audacious with that.

Talking about the Niger-Delta, it's quite complicated because geographically speaking, the real Niger-Delta, is just 3 states today... Delta(Central and South), Rivers and Bayelsa states. I actually think it's very artificial and usually laugh when I hear people say "Republic of Niger-Delta". portraying it as comprising the 6 South South states... That matter go be for another day.

So as Urhobos and Isokos the question should be what are we doing to prepare for this eventuality? Since we don't want to be with Biafra(in share same views), we can at least leave them to do their thing provided they don't practically cross the line(leave Nnamdi Kanu make he talk him own, reality will be different) ... While we focus more on preparing ourselves and being proactive on our future in or out of Nigeria.
I don taya to type, lol. I'll pm you later to continue the discourse.

Omu vwaro tane wọ mrẹ ota na vughe re.
