PoliticsCNG Warns Against Division, Foreign Interlopers Amid Rising Northern Insecurity by Orabi(op): 1:25pm On Mar 31
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep concern over escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria, warning against attempts to exploit ethnic and religious divisions as well as the growing involvement of foreign actors.

The group condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and Kaduna State, describing them as brutal and inhumane. It cited the killing of at least 14 people in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, and another attack on a wedding gathering in Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State, where 13 persons were reportedly killed and several others abducted.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG said the deliberate targeting of civilians represents a grave assault on humanity and must be condemned by all.

The group also raised alarm over reports of retaliatory actions by some youths in Plateau State, cautioning that reprisals, mob violence, and identity-based profiling could further inflame tensions and deepen divisions.

Charanchi said: “CNG is also disturbed by reports of retaliatory actions by some youths in Plateau, which further endanger innocent lives and risk igniting a cycle of violence. We caution strongly against reprisals, mob actions, or the profiling of individuals based on identity.

“Such responses only deepen divisions and play directly into the hands of those who seek to destabilize our communities. We reiterate that the attacks are part of the broader security challenges that have engulfed northern Nigeria in the last few years which we must work together to tackle with a unity of purpose.

He calls on religious leaders, community influencers, and opinion shapers to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory statements capable of worsening the situation.

The coalition further warned about the activities of foreign interlopers and non-state actors, alleging that such elements are exploiting existing fault lines to advance destabilizing agendas.

He said: “These elements thrive in environments of chaos and division, and there is an urgent need for vigilance against attempts to manipulate local conflicts for broader destabilization.

“We therefore urge both the federal and state governments to rise decisively to their primary responsibility of protecting lives and property. The continued recurrence of such attacks underscores gaps in intelligence, response coordination, and proactive security measures.

“The government must move beyond reactive deployments to implementing sustainable strategies that address the root causes of insecurity.

“Security agencies must ensure that perpetrators of these heinous crimes are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Equally important is the need to restore public confidence through visible, effective, and accountable security operations.

“CNG stands in solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult time and calls on all citizens to remain calm, law-abiding, and united against forces that seek to divide and weaken our society. Northern Nigeria must not be allowed to descend into a cycle of violence fueled by fear, suspicion, and manipulation.”

PoliticsADC To Kwankwaso: Follow Due Process Or Clarify Intentions by Orabi(op): 6:07pm On Mar 30
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has called on Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to follow due process if he intends to join the party.

The party also emphasised that the ADC remains committed to democratic values and the welfare of Nigerians, insisting that the party is “not for sale” and cannot be taken over by any group seeking power for personal gain.

Gombe, in a statement issued on Monday, the group, which described itself as the “authentic” ADC, said it holds respect for the former Kano State governor but is concerned about his alleged alignment with what it called a “coalition of political power mongers.”

Kwankwaso, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was accused by the group of associating with individuals allegedly attempting to hijack the ADC for personal and political interests.

The group appealed to the former presidential candidate to reconsider his approach and join the party through legitimate and transparent means.

Gombe said: “The authentic African Democratic Congress under the leadership of Hon Nafiu Bala Gombe has stated that it holds respect for His Excellency Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso but is highly disappointed with his recent decamping from the NNPP to join a coalition of club of political power mongers who are currently fighting to hijack our political party, ADC.

“We are appealing to Kwankwaso to reconsider his political ultimate to join the African Democratic Congress through legitimate due process without aligning with the association of political jobbers who are desperate to acquire power anyhow to continue enriching themselves, family, and their associates.

“Please, Mr. Kwankwaso, if you truly want to join the African Democratic Congress, go to the proper channel of registering, except you have a hidden agenda.

“Those people you are trying to associate with have no respect for democracy, no sympathy for the poor and the general public, and yet ADC is not for sale, it is for Nigeria and Nigerians.”
PoliticsNorthern Youth Group Challenges Oath By El-rufai Over Corruption Allegations by Orabi(op): 7:24pm On Mar 25
The Northern Youth Alliance for Security, has challenged the recent oath taken by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over corruption allegations, describing it as an attempt to mislead the public amid ongoing legal proceedings.

El-Rufai had reportedly sworn on the Holy Qur’an, maintaining that he did not embezzle public funds during his tenure from 2015 to 2023, insisting his entry into politics was driven by a desire to serve rather than for personal gain.

In a statement by its Secretary-General, Lawal Hamisu Jankasa, the group dismissed the declaration as a “tactic aimed at deceiving the public,” noting that its timing raises concerns as it coincides with his arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

Jankasa said: “This arraignment underscores the gravity of the allegations against El-Rufai. He stands accused of receiving a staggering N289,826,998.12 as a severance allowance, a figure that far exceeds his legitimate entitlement of N20,013,245.00.

“Such a discrepancy, over 300 percent of his annual basic salary, indicates a potential misuse of public funds that cannot be overlooked.

“The ICPC's investigation has revealed that these funds were knowingly received and are part of the proceeds of corruption, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022, specifically Section 18(2)(d).

“This legal framework exists to safeguard the integrity of our financial systems and protect public resources from misappropriation. El-Rufai's claims of innocence are further complicated by a report released by an ad-hoc committee of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which in June 2024 accused his administration of misappropriating ₦432 billion.

“Such findings cannot be dismissed lightly, as they reflect a systemic issue within the governance of Kaduna State during his administration.

“Moreover, the ICPC has highlighted additional troubling allegations, including deposits totaling $797,900 into El-Rufai’s domiciliary account from various individuals, raising further suspicions about the sources and legitimacy of these funds.”

The statement also highlighted a specific charge alleging that El-Rufai and Joel Adoga conspired to conceal the origin of $10,000 in July 2019, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

He said: “As the ICPC proceeds with its investigations, we note that a separate charge has been filed against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule in the Kaduna State High Court, encompassing serious allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud.

“The gravity of these charges cannot be understated, and the public eagerly awaits the outcomes of these proceedings. In light of these developments, we challenge El-Rufai to consider the implications of his oaths. While he has called upon his predecessors to take similar oaths, we urge him to reflect on the weight of his own statements.

“The public is no longer swayed by empty proclamations, especially when they are juxtaposed with mounting evidence of financial misconduct. The Northern Youth Alliance for Security calls upon the citizens of Kaduna State and the broader Nigerian populace to remain vigilant and discerning.

“It is crucial to demand accountability from our leaders and to ensure that public resources are safeguarded against corruption. The time has come for a thorough investigation that transcends political affiliations and serves the interests of justice.

“As we await the court's decisions, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for good governance and the rule of law. We urge the ICPC and all relevant authorities to carry out their duties without fear or favor, ensuring that justice is served for the people of Kaduna State.

“In conclusion, we stand united in our belief that the truth will ultimately prevail. The Northern Youth Alliance for Security remains dedicated to fostering a society where integrity and accountability are paramount, and we will continue to challenge any attempts to undermine these principles.”
Politics2027: Northern Youth Back Tinubu, Reject ‘entitlement Politics’ by Orabi(op): 2:19pm On Mar 25
The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), has rejected what it described as “politics of entitlement,” reaffirming its support for power rotation and the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The group expressed concern over comments attributed to Dele Momodu, which it said portrayed Northern political support as a “gang” waiting to be captured, describing the remark as an insult to the political maturity of the region.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Sama Musa, the group emphasised its commitment to the principle of power rotation between the North and South, noting that it remains vital to national unity.

He said: “The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) has noted with deep concern the recent inflammatory and self-serving comments credited to Mr. Dele Momodu regarding the 2027 presidential election.

“Mr. Momodu’s attempt to characterize Northern political support as a "gang" waiting to be captured is a gross insult to the political maturity and conscience of the Northern Nigerian electorate.

“As the voice of the youth across the North, we wish to state the following, Commitment to Power Rotation
The North is a region of honor and integrity.

“We are firm believers in the unwritten but essential gentleman’s agreement of power rotation between the North and the South. This arrangement is the bedrock of our national unity.

“To suggest that the North is waiting to "capture" the presidency again before the South completes its rightful tenure is a reckless attempt to incite regional instability.

“We remain committed to the rotation principle and, therefore, fully support the completion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two-term mandate.”

The group also criticised what it described as a “circle of disgruntled political elites,” including former governors, ministers, and vice presidents, saying they represent the old order responsible for many of Nigeria’s current challenges.

He said: “Mr. Momodu speaks glowingly of a "gang" comprising former governors, former ministers, and former vice presidents. We recognize these individuals for what they are: a circle of disgruntled political elites who cannot fathom a Nigeria where they are not the ones pulling the levers of power.

“These are individuals who have been the primary state actors for the last twenty years, the very same architects of many of the systemic challenges our nation currently grapples with today.

“To present them as a "solution" is the height of political delusion. They are not reformers; they are the status quo, and they are allergic to the reality that their time has passed.”

He expressed that Northern youths are increasingly rejecting the influence of entrenched political actors and are demanding a shift towards fresh, visionary leadership capable of addressing issues such as poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment.

He called on Mr. Momodu and his cohorts abandon the politics of "vengeance" and "entitlement." Saying that, “The North will not be used as a political tool by those whose only grievance is being out of office.”

PoliticsDemocracy Watch Initiative Commends ICPC Over El-rufa’i Prosecution by Orabi(op): 10:12am On Mar 24
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has commended the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for what it described as swift and decisive action in concluding investigations into allegations against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The ICPC has confirmed that El-Rufa’i has been served with multiple charges, and his arraignment is scheduled for this week at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the group described the development as a significant step in the fight against corruption and the promotion of accountability in public institutions.

The ICPC's commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their status, are held accountable for their actions is commendable.

“The integrity of our judicial system depends on the adherence to these principles, and the DWI stands firmly in support of a transparent and accountable legal process.

“As citizens, we must recognize the significance of this moment in our nation’s journey toward greater accountability and transparency in governance. The actions taken by the ICPC serve as a powerful reminder that corruption will not be tolerated, and that those in positions of power are not above the law.”

Events40-day Tribute: Husband Honours Late Wife, Hajiya Barrister Umma Lawal Dodo by Orabi(op): 8:17pm On Mar 19
A heartfelt 40-day tribute has been paid to the late Hajiya Barrister Umma Lawal Dodo, as her husband, Hon. Garba Aliyu Hungu, ‘Fi Amanillah’, reflected on her life, legacy, and enduring impact on their family.

In an emotional message marking 40 days since her passing, Hungu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his wife, describing her as his closest companion, source of strength, and pillar of support throughout their years together.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, “O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing to Him. Enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise.” (Qur’an 89:27–30)

It has been forty days since you returned to your Creator, yet it feels like it was only yesterday. The home we built together is quieter now, and life feels heavier in ways I cannot fully explain. My heart is still trying to come to terms with your absence, and every day reminds me of how much of my life was you.

My beloved wife, for decades you were more than my partner. You were my closest friend, my peace, and my greatest support. We journeyed through life side by side, through moments of joy and times of hardship. You stood by me with patience, loyalty, and a love that never wavered. You were my strength when I needed it most and my comfort when words were not enough.

You were the heart of this family. You embraced every child as your own and loved them without condition or hesitation. You nurtured them, guided them, and stood for them with a mother’s strength and tenderness. There was no difference in your love; you were truly a mother to all. Your kindness, your wisdom, and your sacrifices will live on in each of them.

Even in your illness, far away in Cairo, your strength never left you. You bore your pain with patience, dignity, and unwavering faith. You never complained, and you never lost hope.

I watched you endure illness for years with patience, strength, and unwavering faith. Even in pain, you remained steadfast, placing your trust in Allah. Your resilience and sabr were a true testament to your iman.

From a distance, you remained present, always a call away, always concerned, always ensuring that everything at home was in order. You continued to give, even when you were the one in need. That was who you were: selfless, strong, and full of faith.

Since you left, a part of me feels missing. I miss your voice, your presence, your companionship, and the peace you brought into my life. I miss the little things, the everyday moments that made life meaningful.

But I take solace in knowing that you have returned to Allah, and I hold firmly to the hope that He has welcomed you with His mercy. Today, I raise my hands and pray for you again, as I always do:

Ya Allah, forgive my wife, have mercy on her, and overlook her shortcomings.
Ya Allah, make her grave spacious and fill it with light and peace. Grant her Al-Jannah Al-Firdaus and make her among the righteous.

Protect her from the trials of the grave and the punishment of the Hereafter.
Accept all the good she did and make it a source of light for her.

Though I miss your voice, your presence, and the little moments we shared, I take comfort in knowing you are with Allah. And Ya Allah, reunite me with her in Jannah, in a place where there is no pain, no sorrow, and no separation again.

You may be gone from my sight, but you will never be gone from my heart. I will carry your love, your memories, and everything you were with me for the rest of my life.

I miss you more than words can ever express, my beloved wife. May Allah grant you eternal rest and surround you with His mercy. You are gone from my sight, but never from my heart. I will carry your memory and love forever.
PoliticsADC Crisis: Party Petitions US Over Alleged Leadership Hijack by Orabi(op): 12:02pm On Mar 19
A fresh leadership crisis has rocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the party petitions the United States Embassy in Abuja over an alleged plot to hijack its structure and undermine internal democracy.

The party urged the US to consider sanctions, including visa restrictions, against individuals allegedly involved in any unconstitutional takeover of the party leadership.

In a formal complaint addressed to the embassy, by the party Authentic National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, accused unnamed political actors of undermining the party’s constitution and due process.

Gombe claimed that the crisis followed the resignation of the party’s former National Chairman, Ralph Okey Nwosu, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

According to the letter: “I write to you in my capacity as the Authentic National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). I wish to bring to your attention a critical situation regarding the internal affairs of our party, which we believe poses a threat to democratic integrity and the rule of law in Nigeria.

“As a beacon of democracy and a defender of constitutional processes globally, we appeal for the Embassy’s moral notice and intervention regarding the undemocratic hijacking of our party.

“Our complaint stems from the clear violation of the ADC Constitution following the voluntary resignations of our previous National Chairman, Mr. Ralph Okey Nwosu, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

“According to the provisions of our party's constitution, when the office of the National Chairman becomes vacant, the Deputy National Chairman is mandated to take over the leadership to ensure continuity. Following the resignations,

“I, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, remained the sole and only National Deputy Chairman who did not resign. Therefore, by constitutional right and due process, the mantle of leadership fell on me to steer the affairs of the party.

“However, our legitimate path to leadership has been obstructed by external political actors, power mongers from various other political parties. These individuals are attempting to hijack the ADC and appoint themselves as leaders without any adherence to our party's constitution or established due process.

“While we have resorted to the courts to seek justice and affirm our mandate in line with our party's constitution, our opponents have resorted to propaganda. They are falsely alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is sponsoring and using the courts to truncate their ambitions.

“To be clear, and to set the record straight, we state unequivocally that we have no contact, relationship, or affiliation with President Tinubu or his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

In the petition, Gombe called on the United States to take note of what it described as “anti-democratic practices” within the party.

He said that the appeal is aimed at safeguarding internal party democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.

He added, “We respectfully request that should these undemocratic elements succeed in their hijacking of our party leadership through unconstitutional means, the United States should consider imposing sanctions against them.

“Specifically, we appeal for the revocation or denial of any privileges, such as visas or diplomatic courtesies, that are typically accorded to genuine democrats and democratic leaders.

“Such actions would send a strong signal that the subversion of internal party democracy and constitutional processes will not be tolerated by the international community.

“We thank you for your continued support in encouraging and nurturing younger democracies to establish good governance globally. We trust that you will view our appeal with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, in the interest of justice and democratic survival in Nigeria.”
PoliticsUK State Visit: Triumph For Nigerians - GMI Praises Tinubu’s Historic Outing by Orabi(op): 4:14pm On Mar 17
The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative (GMI), has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating and commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his historic State Visit to the United Kingdom, at the invitation of King Charles III, describing it as a “Triumph for the Common Man.”

As an organization that represents the streets, markets, and rural communities, GMI emphasized that this visit, the first of its kind in 37 years, is far more than a ceremonial photo opportunity. It signals that Nigeria is back on the global stage, not as a spectator but as a respected powerhouse.

In a statement by the GMI National Coordinator Samaila Musa highlighted the significance of the visit for ordinary Nigerians.

Musa said: “Why this visit matters to the grassroots, while the diplomatic ceremonies at Windsor Castle catch the world’s eye, the GMI is particularly excited about the practical "bread and butter" gains that President Tinubu has secured for the ordinary Nigerian:

“Fixing Our Ports, Lowering Prices: The £746 million deal to refurbish the Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports is a direct win for the local trader. Better ports mean faster goods clearance, which will ultimately help reduce the skyrocketing cost of commodities in our local markets.

“Jobs Over Speeches: By engaging British business leaders and signing MoUs on trade and solid minerals, the President is opening doors for our youths. We see this as a foundation for massive job creation that will reach the hinterlands.

“Security for our Farmers: The bilateral talks on defense and the involvement of the National Security Adviser ensure that the fight against insecurity receives global support, allowing our farmers to return to their lands in peace.

“Pride in our Heritage: Seeing our President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, showcase Nigerian Modernism and arts at the Royal Collection reminds us that our culture is our greatest export.

“In the wake of these historic achievements, the GMI has noted with disgust a fake and fabricated social media post circulating online, designed to look like a statement from Donald J. Trump criticized President Tinubu’s visit.

“We wish to state categorically: This image is a total forgery. It is a desperate, pathetic attempt by those playing "politics without civility" to use a manufactured crisis to distract from Nigeria's diplomatic success.”

GMI also praised the inclusion of key ministers in the presidential entourage, ensuring that sectors like Agriculture, Solid Minerals, and the Creative Economy were represented where it matters most.

The organization urged Nigerians to continue supporting the administration as the benefits of these international engagements begin to reach local communities.

Musa said: “To use the sensitive issue of national security to create "fake news" is an insult to the Nigerian people and the victims of insurgency. We call out these agents of destabilization who prefer to manufacture lies rather than engage in constructive progress. Nigeria will not be distracted by digital shadows.

"For too long, Nigeria was sidelined. Today, President Tinubu has walked into Windsor Castle not just for himself, but for the vulcanizer in Lagos, the tomato seller in Kano, and the student in Enugu. This visit proves that the 'Renewed Hope' agenda is working globally to bring investments home. We stand solidly behind the President as he negotiates a better future for the masses."
PoliticsDebunking General Williams's Calls For Changes In Nigeria's Security Leadership by Orabi(op): 3:23pm On Mar 17
By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

In discussing Nigeria's security situation, General Ishola Williams has called for a reevaluation of the current security leadership, particularly targeting the qualifications of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.

While it is essential to engage in constructive criticism of security strategies, Williams's assertions appear to stem from a misunderstanding of the complexities inherent in national security.

His critique, instead of fostering a productive conversation, risks undermining the critical work of experienced professionals who strive to maintain security in the nation. General Williams's calls for change are not only misguided but also dangerous without regard to the qualifications and strengths of NSA Nuhu Ribadu, who is well-positioned to navigate the multifaceted challenges faced by Nigeria.

National security is a multidimensional issue encompassing various sectors, including defense, diplomacy, economic stability, and social cohesion. It is not merely about military might but also involves understanding local issues, community dynamics, and international relations. The role of the National Security Adviser requires a deep understanding of these complexities, which Ribadu embodies through his diverse experience in law enforcement and governance.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), "corruption undermines national stability, economic development, and the rule of law. Evidence suggests that corruption and insecurity are intertwined in Nigeria, where adversaries exploit governance failures.

Ribadu’s track record at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) demonstrates his capacity for dealing with these intertwined challenges, as he led significant anti-corruption operations that fostered a safer environment for citizens.

Nuhu Ribadu's qualifications and experience are essential in addressing Nigeria's security concerns. As the founding chairman of the EFCC, Ribadu's tenure was marked by successful prosecutions of corrupt politicians and powerful business figures, which not only reinforced the rule of law but also restored some citizens' faith in the state's ability to combat corruption.

His expertise is crucial in deploying strategic intelligence and effective policymaking that permeates beyond military intervention.
Additionally, Ribadu's academic background in law and his extensive experience in security matters deliver a uniquely informed perspective essential for a National Security Adviser.

Rather than relying on brute force to combat insecurity, Ribadu has advocated for a more integrated approach involving community engagement, economic development, and educational initiatives to address the root causes of violence and criminal activities in Nigeria.

General Williams's call for a change in leadership seems to be rooted in a misconception of what is required for effective security leadership. In a press conference, Williams stated that "the nation needs leaders who understand military strategies proficiently, especially in counter-terrorism operations" (BBC News, 2023). While military capability is undoubtedly an important aspect of national security, it is only one component in a comprehensive strategy.

Ribadu’s work has involved coordination with various security agencies, facilitating intelligence sharing and collaboration that fosters a more cohesive security architecture. The argument that the NSA should be chosen solely based on military experience ignores the reality that national security strategy involves coordination and integration of both military and non-military efforts in governance.

General Williams also expressed concerns over the efficacy of Nigeria’s security responses, asserting that the leadership has failed to make significant progress in combating rising insurgency and banditry. However, it is essential to critically evaluate whether the responsibility for security failures should lie solely with the leadership.

The effectiveness of national security is subject to various external factors, including socioeconomic conditions, political instability, and the actions of non-state actors..

To illustrate, the Global Terrorism Index has identified unemployment, poverty, and social inequality as fundamental drivers of terrorism and insecurity. Thus, it would be unfair to assess the performance of the NSA without considering these broader societal challenges.

Ribadu's strategy includes working towards improving socioeconomic conditions, combating poverty, and enhancing education as part of a holistic approach to security.

Moreover, security leadership should not operate in a vacuum. Instead of simply calling for change, General Williams could advocate for greater cooperation among security agencies and civilian stakeholders. The promotion of inter-agency collaboration and community involvement is vital in addressing security challenges innovatively.

In a 2020 report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, it was emphasized that "community policing and cooperation with civil society can aid in mitigating violence and improving societal resilience" Ribadu's previous experience in building networks among law enforcement and community stakeholders supports this model of engagement.

The failure by Williams to recognize the importance of collaborative efforts within the security framework undermines the potential for meaningful advancements. Instead of seeking to replace experienced leaders, fostering an environment of collaboration and support may lead to more productive outcomes in Nigeria's security landscape.

Critiquing leaders such as Nuhu Ribadu without understanding the precursors and structural challenges they face poses significant dangers. It can create a lack of confidence in leadership, demoralizing security personnel who dedicate their careers to maintaining safety.

Moreover, generalized criticisms can drive a wedge between communities and security forces, potentially exacerbating tensions and complicating efforts to achieve peace (Institute for Peace & Conflict Resolution, 2022).

Ribadu's commitment to responsible governance has cultivated trust within communities, which is foundational for uncovering and addressing security risks. If General Williams's critique results in the destabilization of well-established leadership, it could not only hinder current efforts but could also alienate community members from security institutions at large.

In conclusion, while calls for accountability and strategic reevaluation are vital components of effective governance, General Williams's criticisms of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu appear unfounded and detrimental to Nigeria's ongoing security challenges. Ribadu's extensive experience in law enforcement, his commitment to anti-corruption, and his holistic approach to security illustrate his qualifications for the role.

The complexities of national security warrant careful and constructive dialogue, not knee-jerk calls for change that fail to recognize the interconnected challenges facing the country. Before recommending systemic changes in leadership, it is critical to evaluate existing structures, support experienced leaders, and promote collaborative efforts.

In navigating Nigeria's multifaceted security environment, stability will best emerge from a concerted effort to address the root causes of insecurity while supporting the leaders who are committed to this mission.
PoliticsOPA Defends Ribadu, Knocks Ishola Williams Over Call For Nsa’s Removal by Orabi(op): 2:39pm On Mar 17
The Odua People's Assembly (OPA) has defended the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, describing recent criticisms by retired Nigerian Army General Ishola Williams as irresponsible and counterproductive.

The group said Williams’ call for the removal of the NSA lacked factual basis and could undermine ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Williams had, during an interview on Channels Television on March 15, 2026, called for a major overhaul of the country’s security leadership, including the dismissal of Ribadu.

Reacting in a statement issued by its Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, the OPA said the retired general’s remarks were driven by emotion rather than evidence and risked promoting what it described as a culture of “permanent pessimism.”

According to the group, such comments could weaken public confidence in security institutions and dampen the morale of personnel working to secure the country.

Kayode said: “However, his assertions lack factual support and are driven more by emotional manipulation than by evidence-based reasoning. Such rhetoric contributes to a culture of "permanent pessimism" that undermines the morale of our security forces and the integrity of our national institutions.

“Irresponsible criticism, as exemplified by Williams’ comments, is characterized by a lack of evidence and a destructive intent. Rather than engaging in a reasoned discourse that seeks to identify and address the challenges facing our nation, Williams resorts to unsubstantiated accusations and ridicule.

“This approach not only tarnishes the reputation of dedicated public servants but also distracts from the pressing need for constructive dialogue and collaborative solutions.

“It is essential to recognize that true criticism should serve as a catalyst for improvement, offering actionable alternatives rather than merely identifying faults. General Williams’ call for the sacking of the NSA fails to present any constructive solutions to the complex security challenges we face.

“Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of blame without contributing to a meaningful discourse on how to enhance our national security framework. Such irresponsible commentary can have far-reaching consequences.

“It can damage reputations, foster mistrust among the populace, and hinder the development of effective security strategies. In a time when unity and collaboration are crucial, we must be wary of commentary that complicates our situation and poses legal risks for those who serve our nation with honor and dedication.

“It is vital to draw a clear distinction between constructive and irresponsible criticism. Constructive criticism focuses on behavior, providing guidance for improvement, whereas irresponsible criticism targets character and lacks supporting evidence.

“The latter is often mean-spirited, serving only to sow discord among the very institutions that are tasked with safeguarding our nation.”

The group also pointed to his proactive approach to modern security challenges, including initiatives such as the National Forest Guard programme, as evidence of his commitment to innovative solutions.

The OPA highlighted his track record in law enforcement, particularly his tenure as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he earned recognition for his anti-corruption efforts.

Kayode added, “His appointment has been met with debates regarding his suitability; however, it is essential to acknowledge his proactive approach to modern security challenges, including the establishment of the National Forest Guard program.

“These initiatives reflect Ribadu’s commitment to innovative strategies that address the multifaceted nature of security threats in Nigeria. Arguments supporting Ribadu’s fitness for the role of National Security Adviser are grounded in his performance and results.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ribadu has been recognized for his effectiveness in combating banditry and terrorism. His ability to coordinate security forces and solve criminal cases stands as a testament to his competence and dedication to the safety of our citizens.

“As a nation, we must rally behind our leaders, offering support and constructive feedback rather than engaging in unfounded criticism that serves no purpose other than to undermine their efforts. The challenges we face are formidable, and it is only through unity and collaboration that we can hope to overcome them.”

The OPA called on Nigerians, particularly influential figures, to engage in responsible and constructive discourse on national security.

He urged Williams to reconsider his position and contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s security framework.

“Our collective responsibility is to foster an environment of trust, collaboration, and constructive criticism, ensuring that our security forces are equipped and supported to protect our great nation. We stand firmly with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the dedicated men and women in our security services as they work tirelessly to safeguard our future.” he said.
PoliticsDWI Defends Ribadu, Faults Ishola Williams’ Call For Security Overhaul by Orabi(op): 12:50pm On Mar 17
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has strongly criticised recent remarks by retired Nigerian Army General Ishola Williams, describing his call for sweeping changes in Nigeria’s security leadership as “misguided” and lacking an accurate understanding of the country’s current security architecture.

General Williams had, during an interview on Channels Television on March 15, 2026, questioned the competence of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and advocated major restructuring of Nigeria’s intelligence framework.

in a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the DWI dismissed the claims as “irresponsible” and an “egregious display of ignorance.”

Bamidele said: “General Williams’ assertion that Nuhu Ribadu lacks the requisite qualifications and experience to serve as NSA is not only irresponsible but also an egregious display of ignorance regarding the complexities of national security and the qualifications of the individuals tasked with its oversight.

“Such statements serve only to undermine the efforts of dedicated professionals and to massage the egos of external entities, such as Amnesty International, rather than foster constructive dialogue aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s security framework.

“Nuhu Ribadu is a seasoned security expert whose qualifications and experience are both extensive and relevant to his role as NSA. A former law enforcement officer, Ribadu’s career trajectory has been marked by significant achievements in the fields of law enforcement and anti-corruption.

“His tenure as the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is particularly noteworthy, where he garnered international recognition for his relentless pursuit of high-level corruption.

“This background equips him with a unique understanding of the interplay between security, governance, and the rule of law. Ribadu's educational credentials further bolster his qualifications for the position of NSA.

“He earned a law degree from Ahmadu Bello University, followed by a Master of Laws, and completed a senior executive course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

“This robust educational foundation provides him with the analytical skills necessary to navigate the intricate legal and institutional frameworks that underpin national security.

“Since assuming the role of NSA, Ribadu has prioritized intelligence-driven and collaborative security efforts. His administration has made significant strides in combating corruption within security agencies, recognizing that integrity is paramount to effective governance.

“Moreover, his implementation of a new forest security strategy has been instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by insurgent groups operating in Nigeria's forests.

“Under Ribadu's leadership, there have been notable improvements in Nigeria’s security situation. His strategies have led to the successful rescue of over 11,000 hostages, with an impressive 80% success rate in reducing kidnappings.

“These accomplishments are a testament to the efficacy of his approach and the commitment of his team to ensuring the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.”

The DWI emphasizes that enhanced inter-agency collaboration is pivotal to the success of any security strategy. Ribadu has fostered partnerships between the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes, resulting in a significant reduction in terror activities. Such collaborations are essential in creating a unified front against insurgency and criminality.

It also cited the implementation of a forest security strategy and the dismantling of several terrorist camps as evidence of progress.

He added, “Ribadu’s strategic focus on proactive intelligence and the deployment of technology has transformed Nigeria's approach to security. The shift towards using advanced technology for criminal tracking and intelligence gathering has proven instrumental in preempting threats and ensuring timely responses to security incidents.

“Recognizing that security cannot be achieved in isolation, Ribadu has initiated institutional reforms aimed at addressing the economic drivers of insecurity.

“While challenges remain, particularly in areas still grappling with insecurity, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing efforts to improve the situation. Ribadu’s strategies are credited with dismantling several terrorist camps, showcasing the progress made under his leadership.”

The group further emphasised Ribadu’s role in strengthening institutional frameworks, including support for the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), and efforts to curb terrorism financing.

The DWI believes that constructive criticism should be grounded in facts and should aim to support, rather than undermine, the efforts of those working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all Nigerians.

The initiative calls for a more nuanced and informed discourse surrounding Nigeria's security leadership. While it is vital to engage in discussions about the effectiveness of our security apparatus, such conversations must be based on factual assessments and an understanding of the complexities involved.

He urge General Williams and other stakeholders to engage constructively and support the ongoing efforts to enhance Nigeria's security landscape rather than resorting to unfounded claims that detract from the hard work being done.
PoliticsAuthentic ADC Tackles Bolaji Abdullahi Over Plot To Hijack Party Leadership by Orabi(op): 11:56am On Mar 17
A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused former minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, of peddling falsehoods and attempting to illegally take over the party’s leadership structure.

In a statement by the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the authentic ADC, Christopher Okechiku, the group described Abdullahi’s recent comments as “a confession of a failed conspiracy,” insisting that he lacks legitimacy to speak for the party.

The statement questioned Abdullahi’s membership status, alleging that he could not clearly state when he formally joined the party, while accusing him of aligning with others to orchestrate a “hostile takeover.”

Okechiku said: “The recent outburst from Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, who curiously labels himself the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is not just a bundle of falsehoods; it is a confession of a failed conspiracy.

“While Mr. Abdullahi is entitled to his opinion, he is not entitled to his own facts. We are compelled to respond, not for his benefit, but to educate the public on the antics of those who see political parties as ripe for plunder.

“Mr. Bolaji, let us start with the basics of political morality. You ask Nigerians to take you seriously as a spokesman for the ADC, yet you cannot honestly answer a simple question: When did you officially register as a member of this party? Was it before you began salivating at the prospect of its leadership, or after you and your co-adventurers drew up a blueprint for a hostile takeover?

“The ADC was built brick-by-brick by genuine progressives, not by political mercenaries who arrive with their suitcases only when they smell an opportunity. Your inability to show your membership card speaks volumes about your legitimacy.

“The "Tinubu Anointment" Fallacy
You have also peddled a ridiculous tale that President Bola Tinubu is plotting to anoint Hon. Bala Nafiu as National Chairman. Let us apply logic here.

“If President Tinubu is supporting Hon. Gombe to reclaim his legitimate seat, a seat that is rightfully his under the ADC Constitution, then it simply confirms that the President respects the rule of law.

“Your logic is twisted. You seem to believe that any support for constitutional order is an "anointment." If defending the provisions of a party's constitution makes one a democrat, then President Tinubu deserves applause, not your baseless insinuations. Your attempt to drag the presidency into your internal mess is a cheap ploy to play the victim, but Nigerians are not fooled.

“A cardinal point of every successful democracy is internal democracy. This means respecting the rules of the game. You and your co-plotters have failed to internalize this because your ambition is driven by an excessive hunger for power.

He that the ADC constitution clearly outlines succession procedures and does not support what it described as an unlawful takeover by new entrants into the party.

Okechiku further alleged that some state party chairmen who initially aligned with Abdullahi’s camp had been abandoned after being used to advance what he termed an illegitimate agenda.

He added, “They have been dumped like refuse. They have been abandoned without any compensation. Their schedules and responsibilities as state Chairmen have been cornered and distributed to your new collaborators, many of whom are not even legitimate members of the party.

“This is the hallmark of your movement: you use people, squeeze them dry, and toss them aside when they are no longer useful. You have taught them a bitter lesson in loyalty to opportunists.

“We must address the company you keep. To prop up your illegal structure, you have surrounded yourself with a motley crew of politicians who are alleged to have squandered our national treasure. Nigerians remember these faces.

“They are the ones who contributed to the looting of the public purse. Now, they seek to hide under the umbrella of the ADC to rehabilitate their image.

“The ADC is not a recovery home for disgraced politicians. We reject this alliance of thieves. We will not allow our party to become a dumping ground for those who have nothing to offer but a history of plunder and a hunger for power.

“Mr. Bolaji, your attempt to hijack the ADC has failed because it was built on a foundation of lies, constitutional breaches, and greed. The structure of the party remains solid under its legitimate leadership. We advise you and your co-travelers to retrace your steps, or better still, go and build your own party from scratch. The ADC is not for sale, and it is certainly not for rent to political jobbers.”
PoliticsADC Warns Bolaji Abdullahi Over Alleged Misuse Of Party Name, Logo by Orabi(op): 12:57pm On Mar 15
The Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have warned Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi to cease issuing press releases or making public statements in the name of the party.

The party leadership said any continued unauthorised use of the party’s name and logo would attract legal action.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Nafi’u Bala Gombe, and BoT Secretary, Rufus Ikanmi, the leadership said if Abdullahi wishes to become a member of the ADC, he should follow the appropriate procedure by registering at his political ward in Kwara State.

The party warned that any further dealings, including lending, withdrawals, or transfers from the party’s accounts by such unauthorised persons, would be considered financial misconduct and economic sabotage.

The BoT and NWC stated that the party would take all necessary steps to protect its identity and interests, adding that it would not hesitate to pursue legal remedies if Abdullahi persists in the alleged actions.

According to the statement: “The African Democratic Congress remains a party for all Nigerians, and membership is open to everyone through the established registration process.

“The Board of Trustees (BOT) and National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a formal notice to all Deposit Money Banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria.

“Instructing them to cease all transactions and activities related to party’s accounts with members of the coalition purporting to act on behalf of the ADC.

“Any further dealings, including lending, withdrawal, or transfer of funds from the party's accounts, will be considered financial crimes and economic sabotage. Such actions will be prosecuted to the full extent of financial regulations and relevant criminal laws.”

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership has disassociated itself from the ongoing electronic membership mobilization, registration, and revalidation exercise being conducted by members of the coalition.

The party clarifies that its constitution outlines specific procedures for membership application.

It urged members and stakeholders to disregard any unofficial registration processes while awaiting the formal rollout of the party’s digital platform.

Adding that, “The official online registration portal will be released in due course, and further announcements will be made through official party channels.”

The BOT and NWC thanked party members and stakeholders for their understanding and continued support as preparations for the congresses and national convention progress.
PoliticsGMI Commends Tinubu, First Lady, Seyi Tinubu For Grassroots-driven Governance by Orabi(op): 12:11pm On Mar 10
A coalition of civil society organisations under the banner of the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and Mr. Seyi Tinubu for what it described as a grassroots-driven approach to governance under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

In a letter addressed to the President at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the group praised what it termed the “First Family style” of governance, which it said has moved leadership closer to the people at the grassroots.

The letter, signed by the National Coordinator of GMI, Samaila Musa, was endorsed by the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) and the Congress of Nigerian Youths and Civil Society Organizations (CONYSO).

According to the coalition, the strength of the current administration lies in a “three-dimensional approach” involving the leadership of the President, the humanitarian interventions of the First Lady, and youth mobilisation initiatives championed by Seyi Tinubu.

Musa said: “As active observers of our democracy, we have noted that the strength of this administration lies in its three-dimensional approach: the visionary leadership of the President, the compassionate outreach of the First Lady, and the energetic grassroots mobilization of the youth.

“The President: Visionary Architect of the Renewed Hope Agenda Mr. President, we salute your courage in steering the ship of state through essential reforms. The transition from stabilization in 2025 to Acceleration in 2026 is visible in our communities.

“From the renewed hope ward development programme to the massive infrastructure projects under the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates initiative, your administration is proving that policy can indeed translate into dignity and jobs for the grassroots.”

The coalition also praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her humanitarian interventions through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), describing her as a “mother of the nation and a catalyst for grassroots development.”

He said that the First Lady’s programmes, including initiatives to tackle child malnutrition and the EmpowerHer774 programme, have provided relief and empowerment to millions of Nigerians, particularly women and vulnerable groups.

The group further noted that her recent appeal to the wives of the 36 state governors to deepen the impact of the Renewed Hope Initiative at the grassroots demonstrates her commitment to decentralised development.

Musa added, “By breaking the barrier of "VIP elitism" and engaging directly with the youth from "area boys" to tech entrepreneurs, he has reclaimed the streets for democracy.

“The City Boy Movement (CBM) has evolved into a permanent bridge for development. Whether through the Noella Foundation, the appointment of strategic zonal coordinators, or the recent establishment of the CBM Women Wing, Mr. Ṣeyi Tinubu has ensured that the youth are not just spectators, but active stakeholders in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“His humility, noted since the days he personally pasted campaign posters, remains a source of inspiration for grassroots mobilisers nationwide. Mr. President, the GMI, DWI, and CONYSO stand in total solidarity with this "Power Circle" of service.

“This synergy ensures that while the President designs the future, the First Lady protects the vulnerable, and the City Boy Movement mobilizes the vanguard.”

He urged the administration to sustain what it described as an “open-door style of governance” that keeps leadership closely connected to citizens at the grassroots.
PoliticsNdi Igbo Worldwide Union Rejects State Police, Backs Regional Policing by Orabi(op): 12:56pm On Mar 08
A pan-Igbo socio-political organisation, the Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union, on Sunday rejected the ongoing proposal to establish state police in Nigeria.

The group urged the Federal Government to instead restore a regional policing structure similar to the system that existed before the 1966 Nigerian military coup.

In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Ben Nwankwo, and Secretary, Chief Charles Edemuzo Saturday, the group argued that regional policing remains the most effective way to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence.

The union said many Nigerians have lost confidence in the current centralized security system and warned that creating state police forces would not solve the underlying problems.

According to the statement, “State police is not the answer. Regional police, modeled on the successful architecture of 1955–1966, is the minimum requirement for meaningful reform.”

The call comes amid renewed national debate about decentralising policing in Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu has urged constitutional amendments to allow state police as part of broader efforts to address insecurity across the country.

Supporters of state policing argue that decentralising security operations would enable faster responses to local threats. Nigeria currently operates a centralized police structure controlled by the federal government.

However, the Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union believes the state police proposal could create new political and governance problems.

According to the group, Nigeria once experienced its most stable and prosperous period under the regional system that existed between the mid-1950s and 1966, when the Northern, Western, and Eastern Regions enjoyed significant autonomy, including their own police forces.

The union argued that policing worked more effectively during that period because officers were drawn from local communities and had deep knowledge of the language, culture, and geography of the areas they served.

“Nigeria’s most progressive and peaceful era occurred between 1955 and 1966 when the regions operated their own police forces. Indigenous officers policed familiar terrain, spoke local languages and understood community dynamics. This fostered trust and improved security,” the statement added.

The group blamed Nigeria’s current security difficulties partly on the centralized policing structure introduced after the military takeover in 1966.

According to the union, the system often places officers in communities where they lack cultural familiarity and community relationships, which can undermine trust and effectiveness.

The organisation argued that sending officers from distant regions to command policing operations elsewhere could create mistrust between communities and security agencies.

“The centralization imposed after 1966 dismantled an effective system and replaced it with a distant national force often commanded by officers unfamiliar with the regions they serve.

“Regional police would empower officers indigenous to their geopolitical zones and provide built-in checks against any single governor weaponising the police,” the union said.

The group suggested that the six geopolitical zones—North West, North East, North Central, South East, South West and South-South—could each operate regional police commands.

Beyond the policing debate, the organisation also warned that Nigeria must undertake deeper structural reforms to maintain unity and stability.

It argued that restoring regional autonomy in governance and security would not only improve national stability but also revive healthy competition among the regions.
“The time for cosmetic fixes is over. Nigeria must return to the regions—or risk losing the federation altogether,” the union warned.

The group therefore called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to prioritise constitutional amendments that would enable the establishment of regional policing structures rather than state-level police forces.

It added that failure to restore genuine regional autonomy in security and governance could push aggrieved groups toward demands for self-determination.
PoliticsCOSEYL Seeks Independent Probe Of Kalu Over NYSC by Orabi(op): 11:51am On Mar 05
The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), has called for an immediate and independent investigation into allegations surrounding the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, over issues relating to his enrolment as a legal practitioner and participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

The group said the call followed a petition reportedly filed before the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) and the NYSC by former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) First Vice President, John Aikpokpo-Martins.

In a statement by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Okey Nwaoru, COSEYL described the allegations as serious, noting that they touch on the credibility of key national institutions, including the Nigerian Law School and the NYSC.

The group urged the LPDC and NYSC authorities to conduct transparent investigations and make their findings public, stressing that institutional integrity must be protected above individual interests.

COSEYL states clearly that these allegations must not be ignored, politicised, or swept under the carpet. The integrity of our institutions is bigger than any individual, no matter how highly placed. Public confidence in the rule of law, professional standards, and the credibility of the NYSC scheme must be protected at all costs.

The group urged the LPDC and NYSC authorities to conduct transparent investigations and make their findings public, stressing that institutional integrity must be protected above individual interests.

They added, “A thorough probe by the NYSC authorities to ascertain the authenticity of all relevant records. The public release of findings upon conclusion of the investigations.

“Given the high office occupied by the Deputy Speaker, COSEYL strongly advises that he steps aside from his position pending the outcome of these investigations. This is not a declaration of guilt but a necessary step to ensure that the process is free from any perception of interference or undue influence.

“In advanced democracies, public officials temporarily relinquish their offices when serious allegations arise in order to preserve the sanctity of the institutions they serve. Nigeria should not be an exception.

“We wish to emphasize that our position is guided solely by the need to uphold transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. This matter transcends partisan politics and regional considerations.

“However, should there be any attempt to frustrate or suppress a fair investigation, COSEYL will be left with no option but to mobilize lawful and peaceful civic actions to demand accountability.

“We reaffirm that any such action will be conducted within the ambit of the law and democratic principles. Nigeria’s institutions must be protected. No individual is greater than the law.”
PoliticsTinubu Demonstrating Courageous Leadership Needed To Fix Nigeria, Sama’ila Musa by Orabi(op): 5:23pm On Mar 03
The National Coordinator of the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), Sama’ila Musa, in this exclusive interview with The Cabal, speaks on the group’s strong alignment with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ongoing economic reforms, grassroots political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, and the challenges of public perception surrounding government policies.

Q: What informed GMI’s decision to strongly align with President Bola Tinubu’s administration?

The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative is fundamentally committed to promoting good governance and effective leadership at the grassroots level. When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, one of the first things that caught our attention was the decisiveness of his leadership.

He started on a bold footing by confronting issues previous administrations had avoided. Nigeria was practically living a borrowed economic life, largely sustained by fuel subsidy payments that were unsustainable.

Several past leaders considered removing the subsidy but withdrew due to pressure or fear of losing public goodwill. Even during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, attempts were made but not sustained.

However, President Tinubu took the decisive step from day one by announcing the removal of fuel subsidy, a decision many did not expect. For us, that demonstrated the emergence of a leader willing to confront Nigeria’s structural challenges head-on.

How would you assess the President’s performance so far, particularly in economic reforms and governance?

I believe the administration is making significant progress, especially in economic management. Recent reports showed that Nigeria’s non-oil revenue crossed over ₦3 trillion within a single month last year, a remarkable development for an economy traditionally dependent on oil.

This indicates deliberate efforts to diversify revenue sources. Additionally, foreign reserves have risen to about $40–45 billion, which reflects improving economic stability.

Many Nigerians expect immediate personal financial relief, but sustainable reforms require time. Leadership must focus on long-term national stability rather than short-term gains. In my view, the country is gradually being placed on the path of growth and development.

Critics allege that savings from subsidy removal are being used for political inducements. What is your response?

Those claims remain allegations without verifiable evidence. Government officials authorised to speak for the presidency have repeatedly denied such accusations.
As far as we are concerned, these remain political rhetorics unsupported by proof.

With 2027 approaching, do you see stronger grassroots support for President Tinubu?

Absolutely. Grassroots mobilisation is already ongoing. We have intensified engagement through community associations, local radio platforms and grassroots networks nationwide.
We acknowledge that the first two years of reforms have been difficult for many Nigerians, but such sacrifices are often necessary for long-term national recovery. Developed nations also passed through similar phases of adjustment.

From our observations, economic pressures are gradually easing compared to the early stages of the reforms. However, market practices and price adjustments among citizens remain areas requiring further government attention.
Our responsibility is to sensitise Nigerians on the administration’s achievements and why continuity may be necessary to consolidate ongoing reforms.

How many Nigerians is GMI mobilising nationwide for the President?

We work alongside several affiliated grassroots organisations, trade groups and community-based networks across the country. At this stage, we cannot provide precise figures because mobilisation is still ongoing and statistical collation has not commenced. Over the coming months, we expect clearer data as activities intensify ahead of the election cycle.

What message do you have for Nigerians who remain sceptical about the administration’s reforms?

Reform periods are always difficult. Nothing meaningful comes without cost. For many years, Nigeria operated on borrowed economic comfort, and correcting those distortions requires sacrifice.

Governance is not limited to those in Aso Rock; it begins with citizens fulfilling their responsibilities. National development requires behavioural change, accountability and productivity at all levels.
Our advocacy focuses on helping Nigerians understand that sustainable governance requires collective responsibility.

What motivates your continued grassroots political advocacy despite public distrust of politics?

Years of disappointment have created deep mistrust among citizens, especially youths. However, disengagement cannot solve national problems. Many Nigerians express strong opinions online but fail to participate actively during elections. For instance, voter turnout in recent elections, even within the Federal Capital Territory, remained significantly low despite widespread political discussions. Our goal is to reawaken civic responsibility and encourage citizens to actively shape the country’s democratic future rather than remain passive observers.

Are you worried about low voter turnout ahead of the 2027 elections?

Not particularly. Several factors contributed to low participation in recent elections, including internal uncertainties within opposition political platforms and the general tendency to downplay local government elections.

Grassroots governance begins at the local level, and citizens must understand the importance of participating in those elections.

Do you believe opposition alliances can unseat President Tinubu in 2027?

From our assessment, opposition cohesion remains uncertain. Political alliances require trust and shared objectives, which currently appear limited.
Even if cooperation occurs, President Tinubu enjoys extensive political structures and grassroots networks nationwide. Electoral success ultimately depends on physical mobilisation rather than social media popularity.

If you had the opportunity to advise Nigeria’s leadership before 2027, what should be prioritised?

Nigeria must prioritise civic responsibility and institutional strengthening. Democracy succeeds when citizens actively participate and institutions function effectively.
Sustainable national progress requires continuity of reforms alongside collective commitment from both leadership and citizens.
PoliticsNAFDAC, NOA Raise Alarm Over Rising Underage Alcohol Consumption by Orabi(op): 4:45pm On Mar 03
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) have raised serious concerns over the growing rate of underage alcohol consumption, warning that excessive intake is fueling criminal activities, including banditry and kidnapping across the country.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, disclosed this in Abuja, during a joint press briefing on the dangers of underage consumption of alcohol packaged in sachets and small PET bottles.

The briefing also marked the official flag-off of a Joint Nationwide Campaign involving NAFDAC, NOA and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission aimed at enforcing the Federal Government’s ban on sachet alcoholic drinks in Nigeria.

Alcohol Linked to Crime, Violence
Adeyeye warned that early exposure to alcohol among minors has far-reaching consequences extending beyond health concerns to national security challenges.

According to her, youths who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are 41 per cent more likely to develop alcohol dependence, often progressing to the abuse of harder drugs such as cocaine and other narcotics.

“Alcohol consumption among youths has been identified as a major contributing factor to violence, youth suicides, homicides and motor vehicle crashes,” she said.

She added that risky behaviours associated with underage drinking also expose young persons to unprotected sexual activity, unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

She said: “Alcohol consumption among youths has been identified as a major contributing factor to violence, youth suicides, homicides, and motor vehicle crashes. Risky behaviours associated with underage drinking also increase exposure to unprotected sexual activity, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections.

“Drinking often leads to lower grades, misclasses, and impaired cognitive function. In our country, it is responsible for banditry. It is responsible for kidnapping. You cannot be in your right mind and point a gun at somebody. It starts from alcohol and then goes on to hard drugs.”

She noted that the alarming trend informed Senate resolutions passed on November 6, 2025, directing strict enforcement of the ban on alcohol packaged in sachets and containers below 200 millilitres. The resolutions were later transmitted to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on December 1, 2025.

The NAFDAC boss disclosed that alcohol remains one of the most widely abused substances among Nigerian youths, describing the situation as a growing public health emergency.

According to her, a nationwide survey conducted in 2021 through collaboration between NAFDAC and the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria revealed disturbing patterns of alcohol access and consumption among minors.

“The study, carried out across the six geopolitical zones with 1,788 respondents, showed that 54.3 per cent of minors obtain alcohol by themselves, while nearly half patronise retailers selling alcohol in sachets and small PET bottles due to affordability and ease of concealment.

“Findings also indicated that minors frequently access alcohol through friends, relatives, social gatherings and even family homes. Consumption data revealed that 63.2 per cent of minors and 54 per cent of underaged persons consume alcohol occasionally, while a significant number engage in daily or weekly drinking.

“Binge drinking cases were highest in Gombe, the Federal Capital Territory and Anambra states, underscoring the nationwide spread of the problem.

“Health and Social Consequences
NAFDAC warned that underage drinking can permanently damage brain development, particularly areas responsible for memory, learning and impulse control.

“Other risks include alcohol poisoning, liver and kidney damage, hypertension, mental health disorders, addiction and increased cancer risk later in life.

“Behaviourally, alcohol abuse has been linked to violence, road accidents, risky sexual behaviour, declining academic performance and broader social instability.
Nationwide Sensitisation Begins.”

In his remarks, Director-General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the campaign as a decisive national intervention to safeguard Nigerian youths.

He said the Federal Government’s ban on production and sale of alcohol in sachets and bottles below 200ml, effective January 1, 2026, was designed to curb easy access to cheap, high-concentration alcohol.

Issa-Onilu said: “For too long, sachet alcohol has been inexpensive, portable and easy to conceal, making it readily accessible to young people.

“No nation prospers when its youth are trapped in cycles of preventable addiction. Protecting our children today is an investment in Nigeria’s productivity and security tomorrow.”

Issa-Onilu explained that NOA would deploy its nationwide network covering all 774 local government areas to drive behavioural change through community engagements, media campaigns, schools, markets, transport unions and faith-based institutions.

He stressed that the initiative aligns regulation, consumer protection and public enlightenment to achieve lasting social impact.

He also called on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to support implementation and fast-track the National Alcohol Policy prohibiting alcohol packaging below 200ml.

Issa-Onilu noted that protecting young Nigerians from substance abuse is essential to national stability.

The agencies called on parents, community leaders, retailers and citizens to support enforcement efforts and comply fully with the ban as part of collective responsibility toward building a healthier and safer society.

PoliticsNYSC Calls For Prosecution Of Ex-kaduna Governor El-rufai Over Alleged ICPC Find by Orabi(op): 5:57pm On Mar 02
The Northern Youth Alliance for Security (NYAS), has called for the prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following alleged revelations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The group also cited transfers amounting to N428,122,180.18 to undisclosed accounts, which it said require thorough scrutiny.

In a statement issued by its Convener, Saminu Dantala, the group expressed concern over reports that security-sensitive equipment allegedly capable of intercepting communications, alongside classified documents, were recovered from El-Rufai’s Abuja residence.

According to the group, the development raises serious concerns about national security, abuse of office, and public trust in democratic institutions.

Dantala said: “This alarming discovery raises profound concerns about the potential misuse of power and the erosion of trust in our governance structures. The implications of such actions are not only detrimental to the security of our nation but also undermine the very foundations of democracy and rule of law.

“Furthermore, it has come to light that Mr. El-Rufai is under scrutiny for multiple corruption allegations, including the troubling disappearance of €1.4 million, along with 180 suspicious payments totaling N2,158,799,199 linked to the Consolidated Revenue Account of Kaduna State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) account.

“Additionally, transfers amounting to N428,122,180.18 to undisclosed accounts demand immediate investigation and accountability. As a coalition of young Nigerians committed to the ideals of transparency and integrity, we cannot remain silent in the face of such egregious violations.

“The presence of Mr. El-Rufai’s wife, Hadiza, and son, Mohammed, during the recovery of these items only adds a layer of complexity to an already troubling situation. It raises questions about the complicity of those closest to him and the potential normalization of corrupt practices within our political culture.”

The group also referenced reports that the ICPC secured a detention order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, allowing investigators to hold the former governor for 14 days pending investigation.

NYAS urged the judiciary and anti-graft agencies to ensure due process and impartial investigation, stressing that no individual should be above the law regardless of political status.

NYAS called for Immediate prosecution of the former governor if investigations establish wrongdoing; Comprehensive investigation into all financial and security-related allegations; Strict enforcement of cybercrime laws to deter future abuses; and Enhanced public accountability mechanisms for elected and appointed officials.

He added, “We call upon the ICPC and relevant authorities to expedite the prosecution of Nasir El-Rufai and ensure that he is held accountable for his actions. The integrity of our institutions hinges on the ability to confront corruption decisively.

“We urge the ICPC to conduct a thorough investigation into all allegations against Mr. El-Rufai, including the whereabouts of the missing €1.4 million and the suspicious payments linked to Kaduna State’s finances. Transparency in this process is essential to restore public confidence.

“As Nigeria grapples with increasing digital threats, we advocate for the strict enforcement of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act. The penalties outlined in this legislation must be applied to all offenders, regardless of their political connections.

“We insist on the establishment of mechanisms that ensure public officials are held accountable for their actions. The culture of impunity must be dismantled to foster a new era of governance characterized by integrity and service to the people.

“The Northern Youth Alliance for Security remains steadfast in our commitment to advocating for justice and transparency. We believe that the prosecution of Nasir El-Rufai is not merely a matter of individual accountability but a critical step towards restoring faith in our democratic institutions.

“The youth of this nation are determined to see a future where leadership is synonymous with integrity and where the rule of law prevails above all else.

“We call upon all Nigerians to join us in this fight against corruption and to demand the accountability that our nation deserves. Together, we can build a Nigeria that is free from the shackles of corruption and where the rights and security of every citizen are upheld.”
PoliticsGroup Plans Mass Protests In Kaduna, Demands Continued Detention, Probe Of El-ru by Orabi(op): 4:33pm On Mar 01
A civil society coalition operating under the banner of Kaduna Voices United has announced plans to stage mass protests across Kaduna State, demanding the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and an expanded investigation into his administration over alleged human rights violations.

The group said the planned demonstrations are aimed at demanding accountability for what it described as years of suppression of dissent, extrajudicial killings, and disregard for judicial authority during El-Rufai’s tenure in office.

In a statement signed by its coordinator, Nura Basiru, Kaduna Voices United declared the formation of a “powerful citizens’ front” committed to pursuing justice for victims of alleged abuses recorded during the former governor’s administration.

According to the group, the protests will take place simultaneously across major locations in Kaduna State and will culminate in a central demonstration in the state capital.

Basiru said: “The purpose of these protests is to demand the continued detention of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and to advocate for the extension of ongoing investigations into his legacy. This legacy is marred by the suppression of dissent, extrajudicial killings, and a blatant disregard for judicial authority.

“As concerned citizens and advocates for human rights, we believe that the actions and decisions made during Nasir El-Rufai's administration have had catastrophic consequences for our communities.

“The time has come to hold him accountable for these injustices. Our movement aims to shed light on the serious human rights violations that cannot be overlooked.

“The most prominent incident of state-sanctioned violence during El-Rufai's tenure was the Zaria Shiite Massacre in December 2015. Government forces clashed with members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), led by Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, leading to the death of hundreds.

“According to the International Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Army exhibited excessive use of force, which violated the fundamental rights of peaceful citizens (International Human Rights Commission, 2016). This chilling attack raises questions about the state’s accountability for protecting its citizens rather than perpetrating violence against them.

“Numerous reports have accused El-Rufai's administration of employing the Department of State Services (DSS) to suppress protests with excessive force and intimidation. Activists and ordinary citizens have suffered brutal crackdowns, leading to numerous extrajudicial killings.

“The Nigerian based organization Human Rights Watch condemned the actions of the security agencies during this period, emphasizing that civilians engaged in peaceful protests should not be subjected to violence (Human Rights Watch, 2019). We stand firm in our demand for justice for these victims and their families.”

The group further highlighted the unresolved disappearance of Kaduna-based activist Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, who has remained missing since his abduction in August 2019.

He added, “Perhaps one of the most haunting stories to emerge from this dark chapter in Kaduna’s history is the unresolved disappearance of activist Abubakar Idris, known as “Dadiyata.” Since his abduction in August 2019, there has been little to no accountability or information regarding his fate.

“The impunity surrounding his case reflects the broader culture of oppression and enforced disappearances that continues to terrorize activists across Nigeria. It is unacceptable that individuals advocating for their rights can simply vanish without consequence.

“The Kaduna Voices United believe that holding individuals in power accountable is essential to good governance and the protection of human rights. The profound detriment to the lives of ordinary citizens during El-Rufai's administration calls for a thorough investigation into his legacy. Society must confront those who repeatedly violate the rights of the people.

“The continued detention of Nasir El-Rufai is necessary not for vengeance, but as a clear message that human rights violations will not be tolerated. It is crucial that we extend our investigations to highlight the systemic issues within the executive that allowed such violations to take place, ensuring that history does not repeat itself.

“We invite all citizens of Kaduna State, civil society organizations, and human rights advocates to join us in rallying against these injustices. Our scheduled protests will serve as a platform not only for the grievances against El-Rufai’s administration but also as a broader movement against human rights abuses in our state and country. Together, we can create an unwavering demand for truth, accountability, and justice.”

Kaduna Voices United maintained that its campaign represents a broader movement against human rights violations and authoritarian tendencies, insisting that confronting past abuses is necessary to safeguard citizens’ rights.

“We encourage participants to come together peacefully, demanding justice for victims and urging the current administration to pursue accountability for the past administration’s actions.

“Now, more than ever, our state needs a collective voice willing to challenge atrocious actions against humanity. History has shown us that silence in the face of injustice enables it to persist; therefore, we must rise and advocate for change.

“The formation of the Kaduna Voices United represents not just a demand for accountability from one individual, but a unified front pledging to safeguard the rights of all citizens against the tide of autocracy.

“As we prepare for these protests, let us remember the victims of extrajudicial killings, the families of the disappeared, and all those who have been silenced throughout El-Rufai's reign. Let us stand together, demanding not only justice for those lost, but also a brighter future for Kaduna State and Nigeria.”
PoliticsADC Authentic Leadership Slams Partners For Abuja Poll Loss by Orabi(op): 12:56pm On Feb 28
The Authentic National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has blamed the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded 2026 Abuja Area Council elections on alleged violations of due process by some coalition partners.

Speaking during a briefing in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Authentic ADC, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, expressed disappointment that certain elements within the coalition operated outside the party’s constitutional framework, a situation he said contributed to the party’s defeat at the polls.

Hon. Gombe also used the opportunity to formally disassociate the legitimate leadership of the ADC from an international press conference recently conducted by what he described as "so-called opposition elements" posing as party stakeholders.

Gombe said: “The Authentic National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress distances itself entirely from the international press conference held by these factions. They do not speak for our party.”

He criticized the parallel group for accusing the National Assembly of overstepping its bounds regarding the constitutional framework for the 2027 electoral act, arguing that the legislature is merely performing its constitutional duties.

The National Assembly is empowered by the constitution to establish the Electoral Act. Accusing them of performing their duty is misguided. Rather than attacking the legislature, our coalition partners should focus on normalizing and formalizing their relationship with our great party, Gombe added.

The National Chairman further asserted that the international community has ignored the appeals of these dissenting voices due to their undemocratic behavior and internal power struggles.

In a final appeal to party faithful, Hon. Gombe called on genuine members and other coalition partners who are not self-centered to return to the various ADC ward offices across the country to register and join the party in order to strengthen the party structure.

He added, “Your power mongering and refusal to reconcile aspirations for the betterment of the country are the main reasons the international community ignores your appeals. Politics should be about service, not self-aggrandizement.

“We urge you to come back home. Help us rebuild and salvage this nation from the grassroots. The Authentic ADC remains the vehicle for true change in Nigeria.”
PoliticsEbonyi LG Polls: Group Demands Transparency, warns Against Electoral Manipulation by Orabi(op): 10:51am On Feb 25
The leadership of the Salt Family Foundation (SFF) in Ebonyi State, has called on the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) to ensure the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the forthcoming Local Government Elections across the state.

The Foundation said credible elections remain the only pathway to achieving quality leadership at the grassroots level, stressing that the persistent leadership challenges facing local government areas stem largely from the imposition of officials rather than the emergence of leaders through democratic processes.

In a statement jointly by its President of the Foundation, Eze Oko Splendour; Director General Affairs, Nwangele Nnanna; Director of Media, Igiri Innocent; and Director of Legal Affairs, Chibuike Ezennabike.

The group warned that it would petition the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold the release of the voter register should any irregularities be observed in the preparation for the polls.

According to the Foundation, Ebonyi State’s development depends largely on the emergence of democratically elected leaders who remain accountable to the people.

The group said: “That Ebonyi State will develop faster if there is democratically elected leadership at the Local Government and State level.

“This will enable the leadership elected by the people to recognize that the people are the reason such Government is in office and this will compel the Government to work for the people and not to lord themselves over the people that voted for them.

“The Foundation wishes to use this medium to inform EBSIEC that her members across the one hundred and seventy one (171) electoral wards and thirteen Local Government Areas in Ebonyi State have volunteered to monitor the forthcoming Local Government Elections to make sure that the exercise is seen to be free and fair.

“Salt Family Foundation will not hesitate to raise alarm anywhere election malpractices are dictated. The Foundation is interested in the welfare and wellbeing of Ebonyi People and this can only be achieved if EBSIEC conducts free and fair elections in Ebonyi State.

“Salt Family Foundation equally advises all the political parties involved in the forthcoming Local Government Elections in Ebonyi State to please play by the rules. There should be no rigging of elections, no thuggery or snatching of ballot boxes in this election.

“Ebonyi People want to see Local Government Leaders emerge via a democratic process not through violence, intimidation or imposition.

“The Foundation calls on Ebonyi People to come out in their numbers and cast their votes to their preferred candidates without fear. The People must make sure they vote and stay back and protect their votes.

“Ebonyi People must continue to demand for free, fair and credible elections in Ebonyi State. Votes must begin to count in Ebonyi State going forward because that is the only way our nascent Democracy can be sustained.”

The Foundation also advised political parties participating in the elections to strictly adhere to electoral guidelines, warning against acts such as ballot box snatching, thuggery, violence, intimidation and vote manipulation.

It urged voters to come out en masse on election day to exercise their civic responsibility without fear, while encouraging them to remain vigilant to ensure that their votes count.

The Foundation calls on the security agents in Ebonyi State to be neutral in this forthcoming Local Government Elections. No security personnel should be seen supporting any political party against the others.

“Their duty is to protect the People that will come out to vote that day. To make sure there is no breakdown of law and order and that the election is free and fair.

“Ebonyi People will be very happy if the security agents will be more professional in the discharge of their duties during the forthcoming Local Government Elections,“ they added.
