The AfriSportPro Youth League, on Tuesday, seeked the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to use football as a tool for youth empowerment and Nigeria’s soft power diplomacy. The Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the League, Chukwuebuka Ugwu, disclosed this in Abuja, during a landmark visit to the Hon. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Bianca Ojukwu. He recalled that the visit aimed at exploring a strategic partnership that would position football as both a unifying force and a diplomatic instrument for Nigeria. Speaking after the meeting, Ugwu outlined the vision of the youth league, stressing that discussions focused on using football as a unifying and diplomatic instrument. He explains that the league is determined to open doors for young Nigerian players to gain international exposure. Ugwu said: “We are using youth football as a vehicle for Nigeria’s soft power diplomacy, facilitating international scouting and exchange opportunities, and harnessing sport to empower youth, foster global partnerships, and promote cultural dialogue. “We’re inspired by the Minister’s commitment to a Nigeria where homegrown talent can thrive locally and shine globally. This collaboration will open doors to international clubs, scouts, and exposure, while strengthening Nigeria’s presence on the global stage. Together, we are building bridges through football.” Ugwu further explained that the league intends to integrate data-driven systems to improve talent discovery and support the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Beyond scouting and data, Ugwu emphasized the league’s broader social impact, adding that, “Our aim is to give opportunities to young talents to develop and be scouted by professional clubs locally and internationally, and also by the NFF. “We are working on sharing player performance data with the NFF to improve their selection process through data-driven decisions for youth national teams. “We want to use this league as a national unifying platform, promoting positive social change, Nigerian culture, arts, and tourism. Football unites the country, and this league will serve as a vehicle for national cohesion.” In her remarks, the Hon. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Bianca Ojukwu, welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and innovative. Ojukwu said: “This is a good development. We needed an innovative football project like this, which covers nationwide competition. I commend your efforts and the structure you’ve put in place. I’m very happy the league has been launched. She added that the project comes at a critical time when sports are enjoying renewed attention in the country. “This league came at the right time when sports momentum is high in the country, especially after the successes of the Nigeria women’s national football and women’s basketball teams. The President is very interested in sports at the moment, so this is coming at the right time,” she added. The AfriSportPro Youth League is positioned to become a national platform for talent discovery, youth empowerment, and international partnerships through football.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), on Monday, commended the Imo State Government for its recent decision to ban lavish graduation parties for pupils in nursery, primary, and junior secondary schools, describing it as a timely step toward curbing excesses and promoting responsible value reorientation among young learners. According to the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the trend fosters unrealistic expectations of instant reward, encourages a culture of extravagance, and places undue financial pressure on parents, who are often compelled to fund what he described as a wasteful and socially unproductive practice. Issa-Onilu emphasised that early exposure to such lavish celebrations distorts the values of hard work, humility, and delayed gratification, which are essential for personal growth and national development. In a statement, the NOA Director of Communication and Media, Bala Musa, added that the Agency is committed to working with state governments, schools, and parents to promote a culture prioritising discipline, modesty, and responsible upbringing among children. He added that the agency recently unveiled a campaign against sign out extreme practises and the ban by the state aligns with the general-purpose of the campaign. Speaking on the State Government’s directive to stop school proprietors from changing textbooks annually, he noted that the move will significantly reduce the financial burden on families caused by frequent textbook replacements, making education more affordable and accessible for all students. Onilu stressed that Imo State’s policy allowing graduation ceremonies only for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary students aligns with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system, which ensures consistency with national education standards. The DG also encouraged other states to adopt similar policies, noting that such measures foster a more disciplined and value-driven education system, rooted in hard work, resilience, and perseverance. He explained that the policy contributes to a healthier educational environment by emphasising academic focus over extravagant celebrations during the early stages of schooling. |
The office of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that he lost his polling unit during the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday, August 17, 2025. In a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mati Ali, the Minister’s office described the report as “false, untrue, and deliberately misleading,” insisting that it was the handiwork of mischief makers intent on distorting facts and tarnishing the Minister’s image. He said: “Our attention has been drawn to the circulation of an election result from Babura Kofar Arewa Polling Unit 001, mischievously attributed to the Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni. This claim is false, untrue, and deliberately misleading. “We wish to categorically state that the report is nothing but the handiwork of mischief makers seeking to distort facts and tarnish the good image of the Honourable Minister. “For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Minister’s actual polling unit is Babura Kofar Arewa Primary School Polling Unit 002, where His Excellency personally cast his vote. The authentic result, as duly released by INEC and announced by the Returning Officer, is as follows: APC: 188 votes; PDP: 164 votes. “This official result confirms that the Honourable Minister secured a clear and convincing victory in his polling unit in favour of the APC. “Accordingly, we reaffirm that at Babura Arewa Primary School Polling Unit 002, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar emerged victorious during the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday, 17th August, 2025.” The Defence Minister’s office reaffirmed that Badaru emerged victorious at PU 002 in favour of the APC and urged party members, the media, and the public to disregard false reports and rely only on official results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). |
In the ever-evolving political landscape of Nigeria, the quest for credible leadership remains a paramount concern for citizens and stakeholders alike. The formation of the ADC-Alliance, a coalition aimed at presenting an alternative to the ruling party, has sparked a debate regarding the viability of its leaders in comparison to the current administration under President Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This essay seeks to explore the leadership credibility of the ADC-Alliance by critically examining the capabilities and promises of its leaders against the backdrop of Tinubu’s policies and governance strategies. Since assuming office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has embarked on a series of ambitious reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s economy and enhancing its global standing. His administration has faced significant challenges, including economic instability, infrastructural deficits, and a complex foreign exchange market. However, the administration has also made strides in areas such as tax reforms, infrastructural development, and efforts to combat corruption. A critical aspect of Tinubu’s governance is his willingness to make tough decisions, such as the removal of fuel subsidies, which has been a contentious issue among the populace. While these decisions have sparked protests and dissent, they are also indicative of a leadership that prioritizes long-term economic stability over short-term political gain. In this context, the question arises: who among the leaders of the ADC-Alliance possesses the vision and capability to outperform Tinubu’s administration? The ADC-Alliance comprises a diverse group of political figures, each with their own visions for Nigeria’s future. However, the credibility of these leaders must be evaluated not only based on their rhetoric but also on their past performances and the feasibility of their proposed policies. For instance, one prominent figure within the ADC-Alliance may advocate for the reinstatement of fuel subsidies as a means to alleviate the immediate economic burden on Nigerians. Yet, such a proposal requires a thorough analysis of its long-term implications. Would reinstating subsidies truly provide a sustainable solution, or would it merely postpone necessary reforms? Furthermore, the ability of any leader to navigate the complexities of the foreign exchange market and implement effective monetary policies is crucial. Can any of the ADC-Alliance leaders present a compelling alternative to Tinubu’s current strategies? Leadership credibility transcends mere promises; it is rooted in the ability to translate vision into actionable policies. The electorate is increasingly discerning, equipped with access to information and a growing awareness of the political dynamics at play. Thus, any leader aspiring to preside over Nigeria must articulate a clear and realistic plan for addressing the nation’s multifaceted challenges. For instance, in terms of infrastructural development, the ADC-Alliance leaders must demonstrate not only their understanding of the issues at hand but also their capacity to mobilize resources and implement projects effectively. What innovative approaches can they propose to enhance Nigeria’s infrastructure, and how will these differ from the initiatives currently underway under Tinubu’s administration? Moreover, the economic landscape demands leaders who can navigate the complexities of global markets while fostering domestic growth. As Nigeria seeks to position itself on the global stage, any aspirant must present a robust economic strategy that addresses both local and international concerns. Courage is a defining trait of effective leadership. It involves the willingness to make difficult decisions, confront challenges head-on, and take responsibility for the outcomes. Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated such courage, particularly in its approach to subsidy removal and economic reforms. In contrast, the leaders of the ADC-Alliance must exhibit similar courage in their proposals. They must be willing to engage in honest discourse about the realities facing Nigeria, rather than relying on populist rhetoric that may resonate in the short term but lacks substance. If any leader within the ADC-Alliance believes they can do better than Tinubu, they must be prepared to articulate their vision with clarity and conviction, addressing the hard questions that the electorate is likely to pose. As Nigeria grapples with its myriad challenges, the need for credible leadership has never been more pressing. The ADC-Alliance presents an opportunity for alternative voices to emerge in the political arena. However, the leaders within this coalition must rise to the occasion, demonstrating not only their vision for the future but also their capacity to implement effective policies that can genuinely improve the lives of Nigerians. In conclusion, while the ADC-Alliance may offer a fresh perspective, the question remains: who among its leaders possesses the requisite courage, vision, and capability to surpass the achievements of Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration? The electorate is watching closely, and the answers to these questions will ultimately shape the future of Nigeria. It is imperative that aspiring leaders engage in meaningful dialogue, grounded in realism and a commitment to the nation's progress, if they are to earn the trust and support of the Nigerian people. |
The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), has commended Mr. Seyi Tinubu for his outstanding philanthropic efforts in improving the lives of vulnerable Nigerians and supporting small businesses across northern states. GMI noted that several communities are already benefiting from Seyi Tinubu’s free medical outreach and targeted economic empowerment programmes in Kaduna and Sokoto States. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, the group noted that through the Youth in Business for Seyi Tinubu initiative, over 2,000 people have benefitted from comprehensive healthcare services across underserved communities. Musa praised the initiative as more than a response to health needs, noting that it has restored confidence, given fresh hope to struggling families, and provided the tools for many to take control of their economic futures. He said: “In Kaduna State, residents of Kachia in Southern Kaduna and Kabala in Kaduna North have received free medical check-ups, eye tests, prescription glasses, essential medication, and drugs. Similarly, in Sokoto State, beneficiaries from Mabera of Sokoto South LGA, Bodinga LGA and other surrounding areas enjoyed the same vital health interventions. “On this note, the GMI opined that these outreach programmes have brought healthcare directly to those who need it most in a pragmatic effort to expand access to quality medical services for the destitutes in our midst. “Furthermore, we learnt that Mr. Seyi Tinubu has also empowered 1,000 small business owners with need-based financial and renewable energy support. In both Sokoto and Kaduna States, 500 entrepreneurs per state received ₦50,000 each alongside solar power packages to enhance their businesses, reduce operating costs, and promote sustainable livelihoods. “We believe that in a region where access to quality healthcare and economic opportunities remains a pressing challenge, Seyi’s interventions have brought hope, healing, and a pathway to self-reliance for thousands.” The group urged other well-meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies, and political leaders to emulate Seyi Tinubu’s impactful approach to community service, pledging continued support for initiatives that uplift people and strengthen communities. GMI further contended that the outreach has done more than treat illnesses as it has restored confidence, given fresh hope to struggling families, and provided the tools for many to take control of their economic futures. He added, “We deeply appreciate Mr. Seyi and pledge our continued support for initiatives that uplift our people and strengthen our communities. We pray that May Almighty Allah continue to propel him to greater heights as he wipes off the tears of the needy. “Thus, as Bonafide northerners who reciprocate good-for-good, recognise this dual-impact initiative as an exemplary model of grassroots development that addresses both urgent health needs and long-term economic sustainability for the weak and poor. “We believe that Seyi’s vision and compassion demonstrate the kind of leadership and social investment Northern Nigeria urgently needs. By combining healthcare with economic empowerment, he is not only saving lives but also securing livelihoods. “Although we reliably learnt that such interventions will be replicated across states, nevertheless, we deem it crucial to commend him to boost his morale to continue with the life-changing support to Nigerians at the bottom of the prosperity ladder.” |
The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEHUR) has condemned what it described as the “deeply disturbing and dehumanizing” treatment of a female passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, by Ibom Air staff during and after a flight from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Lagos on Sunday, August 10, 2025. In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Executive Director, Kunle Daniel, the organisation accused the airline of gross abuse of human rights, breach of civil liberties, and excessive use of force in a manner that, it said, “brings disrepute to Nigeria’s aviation industry.” According to CEDEHUR, the incident began when the flight crew issued the routine instruction for passengers to switch off their mobile phones or place them in airplane mode before takeoff. An eyewitness quoted by the group said Ms. Emmanson explained that her phone was already in flight mode and faulty, but the purser insisted she switch it off completely. “What should have been a minor issue spiralled into unlawful detention, public humiliation, physical assault, and psychological trauma,” CEDEHUR stated. Upon arrival in Lagos, the group said the purser physically blocked Ms. Emmanson’s path, preventing her from disembarking despite pleas from other passengers. Video clips circulating online show multiple passengers urging the crew to let her leave, but their appeals were ignored. The group argued that the incident contravened established international and Nigerian aviation rules on the use of personal electronic devices. “The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) all permit the use of personal electronic devices in airplane mode during non-critical phases of flight,” CEDEHUR said. It cited FAA regulation 14 CFR § 91.21 and EASA’s AMC1 CAT.GEN.MPA.140, as well as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) 2022 Advisory Circulars, which require devices to be in airplane mode or switched off during takeoff and landing. “The crew’s aggressive enforcement in this case was disproportionate, unnecessary, and inconsistent with these guidelines,” the statement added. CEDEHUR described the events after landing as “the most disturbing aspect” of the case. It alleged that an air hostess violently removed Ms. Emmanson’s hairpiece while male security operatives tore her clothes, leaving her partially exposed, and restrained her as she pleaded for release. The group said her belongings were seized, she was dragged off the aircraft, placed in a waiting bus, and taken to a holding facility. The following day, she was arraigned in court and remanded in prison. “These actions raise serious concerns about the denial of her constitutional rights under Sections 34, 35, and 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” CEDEHUR stated. Ibom Air alleged that Ms. Emmanson had attempted to damage an aircraft worth over $2,000 — a claim CEDEHUR described as “implausible and unsupported by credible evidence.” The group noted that the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, publicly denied any role in Ms. Emmanson’s arrest and arraignment, stating that the regulator was not involved and that the airline acted on its own. CEDEHUR demanded Ms. Emmanson’s immediate and unconditional release, a public apology from Ibom Air, and compensation for “the physical, emotional, and reputational harm caused.” It also called on the NCAA, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and relevant human rights institutions to launch an independent investigation into the matter. “Failure to release Ms. Emmanson within 24 hours will compel CEDEHUR to file legal action against Ibom Air and any complicit parties for gross violation of human rights and breach of consumer protection laws,” Daniel warned. |
The maiden edition of the AfrisportPro Youth League kicked off in style, on with Maracana FA cruising to a 3–0 win over Hovel Prime FC in the competition’s opening match. The encounter not only showcased the quality of football the organisers aim to promote but also highlighted the abundance of youthful talent on display, thanks to strict eligibility checks to ensure only genuine youth players participate. Maracana FA drew first blood in the 16th minute when Abdulrahman Haruna calmly slotted home after pouncing on a defensive error. Despite Hovel Prime FC’s attempts to fight back, Maracana maintained their dominance and doubled the lead in the 80th minute through Yazeer Zubairu. Zaarradeon Muhammad sealed the emphatic win with a stoppage-time strike in the 86th minute. Goalkeeper Ibrahim Abdulrazak was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his commanding performance between the posts. Speaking after the match, he expressed delight at both the clean sheet and the award, noting that a strong start would boost the team’s confidence for the season ahead. Maracana FA coach Abdullahi Yahaya praised his players’ efforts but emphasised the need for consistency. Yahaya said: “I’m very happy to get a win in the first game, especially on the opening day of the league. We played a good side, but we prepared well and got the result. However, this is just the beginning, we still have ten games to go, so we must keep working. My target is to develop and sell my players while also aiming to win the trophy.” League founder and convener, Chukwuebuka Ugwu, explained that the AfrisportPro Youth League was created to address structural gaps in Nigerian football by offering a year-round platform focused on player growth rather than short-term results. Ugwu stated: “We know there are thousands of talented players in Nigeria who never get scouted due to a lack of structure. This league gives them visibility, both locally and globally. We were deliberate in selecting the participating teams, and I’m happy with the quality we’ve seen so far.” The pilot edition spans six states, with a total of 409 matches scheduled. In partnership with Wyscout, a leading global football analytics platform, every match is recorded and performance data shared with professional clubs worldwide, boosting the prospects of Nigerian players securing contracts abroad. Also speaking, an International partner from Spain, Josep Gené, commended the initiative after watching the opening game. He said: “Nigeria is full of talent, and a year-long league like this provides the right environment for players to develop and be seen by scouts. With professional-quality videos and consistent performance tracking, more Nigerian players will get opportunities overseas,” he said. Former Nigerian international and FCT FA board member, Femi Ajilore, who serves on the league’s advisory board, praised the standard of play and confirmed that the competition will become an annual event, with ambitions to grow into one of Africa’s foremost youth scouting platforms. With 408 matches still to go, the AfrisportPro Youth League promises not only top-level youth football but also a clear, merit-based pathway for Nigerian talents, promoting national unity, discipline, education, and economic opportunities through sport.

The announcement was made on Monday at a press conference in Abuja, where BOT Chairman Hon. Ado Dauda praised the leaders for seeing ADC as a credible platform for coalition-building and democratic renewal. Dauda warned that failure to follow these procedures could lead to legal challenges and weaken the coalition’s credibility. He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to transparency, internal democracy, and the rule of law, pledging to steer the party toward a National Convention within 90 days. He dismissed as fraudulent a purported resignation letter attributed to Bala and reaffirmed his position under Article 14.3 of the ADC Constitution. It vowed to resist any unconstitutional attempt to impose parallel leadership and pledged to hold a National Convention within 90 days. The Board of Trustees and State Chairmen expressed gratitude to outgoing National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, for his leadership, while calling for unity and calm among members. He said: “We welcome leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola and others but we emphasize. Formal resignation from previous parties must be documented. “Registration at ward levels in home states is mandatory per the Electoral Act. Failure to comply risks legal challenges and undermines coalition credibility. “Immediate Stabilization: Hon. Nafiu Bala will oversee daily operations and prepare for a National Convention within 90 days. Legal Safeguards: We will seek INEC's formal endorsement of Bala's acting chairmanship and litigate counterfeit documents.Member Vigilance: Report irregularities to the NWC Secretariat. Uphold Article 9.5: "No non-member shall hold office." Also speaking, ADC’s 2023 Benue State governorship candidate, Engr. Terhemen Tilley-Gyado, endorsed Bala’s leadership following the voluntary resignation of former chairman Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu. He urged top coalition leaders, including Atiku, Obi, David Mark, El-Rufai, and Aregbesola, to finalise their ADC membership to maintain the coalition’s integrity. He said Bala, the former Deputy National Chairman, would provide stability and continuity as the party advances its political mission. The ADC candidate urged prominent coalition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola and others, to resign from their previous parties and formally register with the ADC at ward level. He stressed that compliance with the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution was necessary for the integrity of the coalition-building process. Tilley-Gyado reaffirmed the ADC’s identity as a progressive, integrity-driven platform committed to credible opposition and democratic renewal. He called on members, supporters and political allies to unite behind the principles of transparency, legality and good governance to help build what he described as “a new Nigeria.” In his remarks, the Acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon Nafiu Bala, vowed to fortify the party’s organisational framework ahead of the 2027 general elections. Hon. Nafiu Bala pledged to fortify party structures, deepen internal democracy, and build strategic alliances ahead of the 2027 polls. To enhance internal democracy and inclusivity. To promote policy development and implementation of party's resolutions. To foster strategic partnerships and alliances with any group of individuals who extend their hands of friendship to us. “And to build a strong, vibrant, and effective leadership team. I want to thank the National Board of Trustees (BOT) Members, National Excutive committee (NEC), and some State Chairmen who are here present and 2023 Gubernatorial Candidates of African Democratic Congress for this endorsement and I assure you of my commitment to collaborative leadership. Together, we will build stronger, more united, more prosperous, and effective political party in Nigeria.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman Audu Innocent Ogbeh, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025. Mr. Ogbeh was not only a national figure of great repute but also a valued member of the NEF’s Board of Trustees, a voice of wisdom, and a guiding presence in our deliberations. His counsel, integrity, and dedication to the unity and progress of Northern Nigeria and the nation as a whole will be sorely missed. In a statement by NEF spokesperson Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the Forum described Ogbeh as “a principled democrat, a patriotic nationalist, and a tireless advocate for peace and cohesion.” A respected farmer, politician, playwright, and intellectual, he served Nigeria with distinction as Minister of Communications (1982–1983) and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2015–2019). He was a principled democrat, a patriotic nationalist, and a tireless advocate for peace and national cohesion. The NEF extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government and people of Benue State, the people of Northern Nigeria, and the entire nation. His passing is a personal loss to the Forum and a profound loss to Nigeria. Paying tribute, the Forum hailed Ogbeh as, “A statesman of rare integrity, a patriot of unwavering conviction, and a cherished member of our own family. In our councils, he was a voice of reason and conscience; in the nation’s service, he was a bridge-builder, a reformer, and a steadfast advocate of unity and justice. “His wisdom guided us, his humility inspired us, and his commitment to Nigeria’s progress strengthened us. Though the nation grieves, our loss is deeply personal, for we have lost not only a leader, but a trusted friend whose absence will be felt in every conversation about our shared future." |
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in partnership with Shammies Unusual Heart Foundation, has launched a National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Examination Centre at the Kuje and Suleja Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), registering 70 inmates for the upcoming 2025 November/December exams. The centre, unveiled under the theme “Restoring Dignity Through Education and Second Chances,” marks a significant milestone in rehabilitative efforts aimed at transforming the lives of incarcerated individuals through education and vocational training. Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Controller-General of NCoS in charge of Training and Staff Development, Amoran Olarewaju, who represented the Controller-General, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, stressed the transformative power of education in reforming inmates. He commended Shammies Foundation for its consistent support of inmate education and called for more investments in vocational training and certification, which he said are essential for improving inmates’ employability and reducing recidivism. Olarewaju said: “The significance of today’s event is to ensure that those who are incarcerated are not just locked up but given wide opportunities to learn and grow. Education can help them reintegrate into society as valuable members, combatting the social rejection they face. “We are grateful for the Foundation’s effort in bringing such an empowering initiative to our custodial centres. Many people are unaware of the vocational training opportunities available here, but with Shammies Foundation, inmates are engaged in meaningful learning, both theoretically and practically.” Olarewaju further emphasised the need for vocational training provided in custodial centres, including certifications that could enhance inmates' employability. Also speaking, the Executive Director of Shammies Unusual Heart Foundation, Ambassador Saratu Abdullahi, expressed heartfelt joy at the positive response from inmates. She said: “The joy I feel from touching lives and witnessing genuine happiness is the biggest satisfaction for me. This is not the first time we’ve worked with the correctional facilities, and it won’t be the last. “We’ve established an ongoing relationship, and you can expect to see more from us. We are committed to this cause, and with the support of my team and the community, we will continue to provide opportunities for the inmates.” The Controller of Corrections for the FCT Command, Bosun Ajibogun, described the initiative as a “game changer”, expressed his appreciation for the project. He said: “What Shammies Foundation has brought, technical and vocational education, is a game changer.” Ajibogun was particularly moved by the comprehensive support provided, stating various resources such as laptops, textbooks, and teaching materials, noting that the NABTEB center will be extended to the Suleija facility. He emphasised the significance of registering inmates for certification; "The impact of what has been done today cannot be overstated. The initiative to immediately register inmates for certification is a monumental step. It's an achievement that I never expected to see in my tenure as Controller.” |
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has dismissed recent claims to its leadership by former Senate President David Mark and his associates, describing them as “unfounded” and in clear violation of the party’s constitution. The clarification follows the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu as National Chairman, a move which the party says has triggered a constitutional process for appointing his successor, not a “free-for-all” scramble for control. In a statement by the Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to the Interim National Chairman, Dr. Aminu Sani Alhassan, the ADC stressed that only bona fide members of the party can aspire to leadership positions. He said: “In light of the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu, it has come to our attention that certain individuals, notably David Mark and his associates, have attempted to assert claims of leadership that are not only unfounded but also contrary to the principles and constitution of our party. “First and foremost, it is essential to clarify that the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu did not create a free-for-all scenario within the ADC. Instead, it has opened a necessary dialogue regarding the future of our leadership, a dialogue that must be conducted within the framework established by our party’s constitution. “The ADC’s constitution is unequivocal in stipulating that any individual seeking to assume a leadership role must first be a bona fide member of the party. This fundamental requirement cannot be overlooked or circumvented by any means. “In accordance with the ADC’s constitution, the appropriate procedure for filling the leadership vacuum left by Chief Nwosu’s departure is through a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.” The party reaffirmed Alhaji Nafiu as its legitimate National Chairman and called on members to remain calm and united. He also expressed confidence in INEC’s ability to uphold constitutional and democratic norms in political party affairs. He added, “This meeting will serve as the legitimate forum for deliberating on the way forward and will be followed by ratification at subsequent levels of party convention. It is here that we will ensure that our party’s leadership is determined by those who are genuinely committed to the ideals and objectives of the ADC. “We would like to emphasize that there is no provision in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regulations, the Federal Constitution, or the ADC’s constitution that permits an individual to assume leadership without fulfilling the requisite criteria of membership and democratic process. “The actions being taken by David Mark and his cohort are not only a misinterpretation of our party’s governance structure but also a blatant disregard for the democratic principles that the ADC stands for. “To our loyal and dedicated members, we urge you to remain calm and focused during this time of transition. The progress we have made as a party is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our genuine members. “We must not allow ourselves to be distracted or disheartened by the antics of those who seek to disrupt our unity and progress. The ADC is a party built on the foundations of integrity, accountability, and democratic values, and we must collectively uphold these principles. “As we navigate this period, we also wish to reaffirm our confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). We trust in its commitment to upholding constitutionalism and ensuring that the democratic processes within political parties are respected and adhered to. The ADC remains dedicated to collaborating with INEC to foster a political environment that is conducive to fair play and democratic engagement. “In conclusion, we stand firmly behind Alhaji Nafiu as the legitimate National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress. His leadership will be instrumental in guiding our party through this transitional phase, and we are confident that he will uphold the values that our members hold dear. We call on all genuine members of the ADC to rally behind Alhaji Nafiu and to work collectively towards the betterment of our party and the communities we serve.” |
The Northern Youths Frontiers (NYF), has issued a scathing rebuke of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, over recent comments made during a political gathering in Sokoto, describing them as divisive, self-serving, and disconnected from the realities and aspirations of Northern Nigeria. The NYF noted with concern that El-Rufai became more brazenly bitter after he lost a ministerial bid when he was rejected by the Senate due to petitions rooted in the growing lack of trust in his leadership and character. In a strongly worded statement signed by the NYF North West Zonal Coordinator, Saminu Tukur, the group accused El-Rufai of deliberately stoking regional tensions to revive his fading political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said: “The NYF contended that El Rufai’s veiled threats about 2027 and inflammatory rhetoric amount to a desperate attempt by a politically irrelevant figure to reinsert himself into the national discourse through controversy, divisiveness, and desperation. “We believe that his utterances were reckless, self-serving, and wholly unrepresentative of the views and aspirations of the North. Let it be clear that El-Rufai does not speak for Kaduna State, and certainly not for the North. “His brand of politics, driven by personal ambition and bitterness, has long been rejected by the people. The North today stands for unity, peace, and national development, not the outdated politics of division and discord. His remarks in Sokoto only serve to remind Nigerians of his fading relevance and toxic political legacy. “Most egregiously, El-Rufai betrayed the very people that had propelled him to national relevance such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who mentored him and influenced his appointment at the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), former President Obasanjo who trusted him as FCT Minister, and late President Buhari whose popularity he exploited to become Kaduna State Governor, he discarded their alliances for personal advancement. “Till today, El Rufai holds grudges with the late President Yar’Adua, who refused to massage his ego through patronage and political appointments. ” The NYF assures the public that Northerners are already sick and tired of El-Rufai’s selfish, manipulative political machinations and myopic worldview that reduces politics to a personal property for him and his lineage. His treachery against every leader since 1999 proves he serves no cause but his ambition. The NYF reminds El-Rufai of his poor legacy as governor of Kaduna State, where he ruled with an iron fist for 8 consecutive years and ended up as a colossus failure, whose tenure was characterised by insecurity, high-handedness, and policy failures. The NYF also lambasted El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State, describing it as a period marked by insecurity, authoritarianism, and poor policy choices. The group urged youths across Northern Nigeria and beyond to shun divisive politics and instead focus on unity, innovation, and progress. He said: “Kaduna under El-Rufai became one of the most insecure states in Nigeria, with banditry, kidnapping, and mass killings in areas like Birnin Gwari and Southern Kaduna left abandoned while his government watched. We remind Nigerians that the same El Rufai, who sacked over 22,000 teachers, which led to a crisis in the education sector, and falling standards rather than improvement, cannot offer any better alternative to the masses. “The organization further noted that El-Rufai left Kaduna with heavy debt from loans purportedly taken for infrastructural development, yet many projects remain irrelevant to the needs of the people. “The NYF contended that El Rufai only deepened ethnic and religious fault lines, and thus cannot be trusted with power at the national level, else he will nationalise and widen the fissure of mistrust he had sowed in a diverse state like Kaduna. “We believe that he is simply seeking to inflame regional tensions with careless political statements to nurse a bruised ego after being rejected by the people and sidelined in national politics. His actions and utterances are rooted not in ideology but in a desperate grasp for relevance and patronage. “The NYF averred that he no longer enjoys the confidence of his people or political peers. The North is not his fiefdom. We reject his false claims and condemn his attempt to drag the region into petty political fights that serve no one but himself. “The group urged the youth across Northern Nigeria and beyond to shun divisive rhetoric and focus on building bridges of understanding, unity, and national development. Our future as a region lies in collaboration, innovation, and collective progress, not in the bitter politics of has-beens. “The NYF remains committed to promoting peace, responsible leadership, and policies that uplift our people across all states in the North.” |
Team Muqaddas, in partnership with the Tukur Tukur Youth for Political Progression, has marked the two-year anniversary of Rt. Hon. Dr. Abbas Tajudeen’s tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, hailing his leadership as a unifying force in Nigeria’s legislative landscape. Speaking at the celebration as Guest Speaker, Comrade Abdul Azeez Suleiman reflected on the challenges that faced the National Assembly when Abbas assumed office, describing the political climate as one of uncertainty and division. He said Nigeria needed a leader who could bridge the gaps, foster dialogue and unite diverse voices under a common purpose. The Guest Speaker said that Iyan Zazzau has not only risen to this occasion but has also redefined what it means to lead with integrity, compassion, and commitment to the people. According to him, leadership is not about holding position or power , it is about the ability to inspire, mobilize and to enact meaningful change. Comrade Abdul Azeez Suleiman said, under Speaker Abbas' stewardship we witnessed a transformation in the dynamics of our legislative processes. While acknowledging the contributions of Aliyu Garba Waziri and recognizing his pivotal role as the liaison officer for the Speaker. Comrade Suleiman who acknowledged Abbas championed inclusiveness, ensuring that every voice is heard and every concern is addressed. He also pointed out that throughout this period Speaker Abbas has prioritized the people’s agenda and has listened to the aspirations of the citizens, translating their hopes and dreams into actionable policies. The Guest Speaker proposed a strategic agenda for the people of Zaria Federal Constituency to reelect Speaker Abbas to the House of Representatives in 2027, which will follow his retention as the Speaker of the 11th National Assembly. He said this initiative is aligned with the anticipated political transition in 2031. Comrade Abdul Azeez said, it is imperative for the North to present a viable and credible candidate for the Presidency. He said, this foresight underscores the necessity of consolidating political capital now to secure a robust and unified Northern front in the forthcoming electoral cycle. |
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has launched the maiden edition of the National Joint Security Press Briefing to enhance inter-agency coordination and strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture. Speaking at the NOA headquarters in Abuja on Monday, Issa-Onilu declared that Nigeria’s borders, once regarded as crime corridors, have now become formidable barriers against human trafficking, arms smuggling, and other transnational crimes. Held under the theme "Disrupting Criminal Networks and Securing Communities," the briefing showcased achievements by security agencies and reinforced the government’s commitment to collaborative enforcement. Issa-Onilu said: “326 Nigeria Police operations 2,109 arrests, 175 kidnap victims rescued, 78 terrorists neutralized: 6 arms trafficking rings dismantled. 1.572 NDLEA raids 2.9 million kg of narcotics seized. “720 conflicts resolved by NSCDC: 2.838 road fatalities recorded by FRSC. The Federal Government has escalated security operations nationwide-merging tactical enforcement with intelligence-led interventions. “Banditry, insurgency, trafficking, and other crimes are being tackled through seamless inter-agency cooperation, resulting in major arrests, rescues, and asset seizures. “From the North-East to the Niger Delta, our security forces are reclaiming the peace, one operation at a time. Nigeria is fighting back decisively and collaboratively. “We urge citizens to report threats, avoid amplifying unverified content, and join hands with authorities to protect our communities." Highlighting a renewed approach to border and migration control, Issa-Onilu noted that 82 victims of human trafficking had been rescued, while 495 irregular migrants were repatriated. “Borders are no longer gateways to crime. They are now barriers to exploitation and trafficking.” According to him,“The Nigeria Immigration Service also issued 3,786 e-visas and facilitated the return of 214 Nigerians from Niger Republic and 110 deported from Saudi Arabia. “A total of 12 AK-47 rifles, 2 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), and over 2,200 rounds of ammunition were recovered during operations targeting arms proliferation. “Additionally, NAFDAC intercepted 10 containers of tramadol and five of expired tomato paste, reflecting a clampdown on illicit pharmaceutical imports. The Director General also addressed threats to national assets under the theme “Protecting Critical Infrastructure and Natural Resources.” The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) dismantled 12 illegal refineries, three illegal mining gangs, and seven trucks used for oil theft. The Nigerian Navy seized ₦752.2 million worth of stolen petroleum products. NOA added, “Every illegal refinery and tampered railway track is an attack on our economy," He commended security agencies for their humanitarian response. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) supported flood victims and rehabilitated Boko Haram escapees across more than 15 states. “The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) held 352 anti-corruption events, reaching over 200,000 citizens. NOA has also led over 80 campaigns against misinformation, urging Nigerians to verify content before sharing.” Meanwhile, the Nigeria Correctional Service reported the rehabilitation of 15,000 inmates, with 800 currently enrolled in university degree programmes. He said Nigeria is also making progress toward exiting the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, following recent reforms in anti-money laundering protocols. “Security does not begin on the battlefield. It begins in our homes, our values, our truthfulness, and our resolve. Let us protect what is ours and unite for a peaceful, progressive Nigeria." |
The Benue Concerned Democrats (BCD), has raised strong objections over what they describe as a political hijack of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by former Senate President, Senator David Mark, under the guise of a purported “Coalition for 2027”. In a scathing statement issued on Monday, the BCD Convener, Arc Idoha Audu Anuga, condemned what he termed “recycled opportunism” masquerading as leadership, accusing Mark and his allies of attempting to manipulate the ADC to return to political relevance. According to the BCD, David Mark’s return to politics through the ADC under a new coalition is a dangerous attempt to relaunch what they described as a failed and authoritarian political playbook. Anuga said: “Nigerians must not forget who David Mark truly is. He is no democrat. His anti-democratic credentials are etched in history, beginning with his shadowy support for the discredited Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), the political hit squad used by Arthur Nzeribe to sabotage the June 12 mandate of Chief MKO Abiola. Mark stood not with the people, but with the enemies of democracy. “In Benue South, his political legacy reeks of rigging, intimidation, and manipulation. The most infamous being his fraudulent "victory" over the popular young Alhaji Usman Abubakar in a senatorial contest many still remember as one of the worst electoral daylight robberies in Benue history. “His record in the Senate is equally disgraceful, 16 years of redundant leadership, where the Senate under his watch was nothing short of a rubber stamp, and arguably the worst-performing in Nigeria’s democratic experience. “Today, Benue South has nothing to show for David Mark’s over a decade in power, no federal projects, no legacy, not even a sustainable youth empowerment programme. His people are left with memories of wasted years and dashed hopes. “Now, like a moth to political flame, he’s back, hoping to sneak into government again, this time through the ADC, pretending to lead a “Coalition” of change. Nigerians must be warned: this is the same old Mark, backed by the same gang of expired political jobbers seeking to line their pockets once more under the guise of rescuing Nigeria. “If the ADC must survive as a credible platform, it must distance itself from David Mark and his ilk. The so-called coalition has made a tragic error asking him to lead the charge against the APC. You do not fight democratic decay by recycling those who contributed to it. “As citizens of Benue, we are best placed to expose David Mark’s longstanding abandonment of his immediate constituency. His disengagement is total, politically, morally, and developmentally. “His military career, much like his political life, was punctuated by dictatorial tendencies, habitual abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of perceived opponents. From khaki to agbada, the Mark signature has always been fear, not service; control, not development.” The BCD further alleged that Senator Mark’s military and political careers were marked by dictatorial tendencies, abuse of office, and suppression of dissent, describing his leadership style as one driven by “fear, not service; control, not development.” He added, “We, the Benue Concerned Democrats, reject David Mark’s attempted reincarnation in whatever form. Nigerians deserve a clean break from yesterday’s men. David Mark represents the rot of the past, not the hope of the future.” |
The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA), has strongly condemned former Senate President David Mark over what it described as a pattern of anti-democratic behavior and a fresh attempt to destabilize the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The OPA emphasized its strong opposition to what it called "the tyranny of ambition" and warned against the continued manipulation of democratic institutions by elite interests. In a statement signed on Saturday by Kayode Richard Olatunji, National Chairman of the OPA, the group accused Mark of spearheading moves to forcibly take over the ADC, warning that such actions constitute a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He said: “We find it necessary to address his recent maneuvers, to forcefully take over and destabilize the leadership of the African Democratic Congress which have once again revealed his true nature as a habitual anti-democracy element. “David Mark’s notoriety is not a recent development; it is a legacy forged in the fires of political treachery and betrayal. He played a pivotal role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, which are widely regarded as the most credible elections in the annals of Nigerian democracy. “The annulment of these elections, which were poised to usher in a new era of democratic governance under the leadership of Chief Moshood Abiola, was a grievous affront to the will of the Nigerian people. David Mark was the arrowhead of other political conspirators, who financed the infamous movement led by Arthur Nzeribe to thwart the democratic aspirations of millions of Nigerians. “This act of sabotage marked the beginning of a dark chapter in our nation's history, one characterized by political instability, disenfranchisement, and the erosion of democratic values. “Since that fateful day, David Mark has positioned himself as an architect of anti-democratic actions, perpetuating a cycle of disenfranchisement and disillusionment among the populace. His legacy is not one of progress or unity; rather, it reflects a persistent effort to erode the pillars of democracy that countless Nigerians have fought to establish. “The OPA believes that it is imperative to hold individuals like Mark accountable for their actions, which have resulted in a protracted struggle for democracy in our nation. “In recent developments, we have witnessed Mark's audacious attempt to seize control of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party that has long been a beacon of hope for many Nigerians seeking an alternative to the prevailing political status quo. “This forceful takeover, orchestrated with the intent of spreading mischief and discord, is a clear indication of Mark's relentless pursuit of power at the expense of democratic integrity. His actions are not only a betrayal of the party's founding principles but also a direct affront to the democratic rights of its members and supporters. “The Odua People's Assembly categorically rejects Mark's attempts to destabilize the ADC and undermine the democratic process. We stand firm in our belief that political parties should be governed by the principles of transparency, accountability, and respect for the will of their members. Any attempt to manipulate or hijack these institutions for personal gain is a threat to democracy itself. “Furthermore, we call upon all Nigerians who cherish democracy to rise against this tyranny of ambition that seeks to stifle their voices. It is crucial that we remain vigilant and united in our efforts to safeguard the democratic ideals for which so many have sacrificed. “The OPA implores the Nigerian populace to reject the machinations of individuals like David Mark, who have demonstrated time and again their commitment to anti-democratic practices. “As we reflect on the historical context of David Mark's actions, it is essential to recognize the broader implications of his political maneuvers. The annulment of the June 12 elections was not merely a political setback; it was a profound moment of betrayal that reverberated throughout the nation. It served as a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy in Nigeria and the lengths to which certain individuals will go to preserve their power.” The group further called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against those who, in the past or present, have worked to sabotage Nigeria’s democracy. He added, “The Odua People's Assembly urges all stakeholders in the Nigerian political landscape to recommit themselves to the principles of democracy. We must work collectively to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and respected, and that the integrity of our democratic institutions is upheld. The time has come for us to reject the politics of division and embrace a future built on collaboration, respect, and genuine representation. “The act of sabotaging and undermining a democratic government on June 12 constitutes a treasonable felony that threatens the very foundations of democratic governance. Such actions not only destabilize political institutions but also erode public trust in the rule of law. “Therefore, it is imperative for the federal government to take decisive action against the perpetrators to ensure accountability. By doing so, the government would not only uphold the principles of democracy but also serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar acts of treachery in the future.” |
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed outrage over what it describes as an alarming attempt by some traditional rulers and political figures to pressure its Interim National Chairman, Alhaji Nafiu Bala Gombe, into relinquishing control of the party. In a strongly worded statement issued by Dr. Aminu Sani Alhassan, Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to the Interim National Chairman, the party condemned a wave of telephone calls and covert lobbying allegedly aimed at coercing the Chairman into abandoning his stance in defense of the party’s democratic integrity. Alhassan said: “It is disheartening that these telephone calls to undermine the efforts of the Interim National Chairman to defend the ADC's democratic principles have been extended to some NWC members - urging them to stop the Chairman from maintaining the party’s latest position. “It is indeed unfortunate that some toyal fathers have stooped to serving as errand boys for political desperadoes bent on hijacking our party. Information reaching us has revealed that the arrowheads of 2027 coalition led by Gen David Mark and Elrufai and a host of others have also set up a group of elders to visit the mother of the ADC Interim Chairman in Gombe in order to compel him to hand over the party to the hijackers. “This personalization is unacceptable and a veiled attempt to undermine democracy through the backdoor. We reject this attempt of dragging the ADC Chairman's parents into a decidedly partisan matter. “Let it be known without mincing words also: the meddlesome behavior by royal fathers and the secretly formed group of coalition arrowheads, for the visit to the Chairman's mother is crude, disgraceful, unconstitutional, and a direct insult to Nigeria’s democratic process.” The ADC also warned those posing as peacemakers while advancing the alleged coalition agenda that they will be named and shamed. It accused these individuals of further exposing the desperation of those behind the plot. He added, “Credible intelligence confirms that a handful of monarchs have been shamelessly lobbying, both openly via numerous telephone calls and in the shadows, to intimidate our Interim National Chairman, Alhaji Nafiu Bala Gombe, into surrendering the party to a clique of power-hungry hijackers. “This is a shameful betrayal of the neutrality expected of traditional stools. It is also a disturbing descent into political brigandage, wrapped in royal robes. “Let it be loud and clear: Traditional rulers have no business crawling around political corridors on behalf of godfathers. This is not 1983. The ADC will not be used as a stepping stone for the untrustworthy 2027 ambitions of a noisy gang of privileged few, not now, not ever. “Alhaji Nafiu Bala Gombe remains unshaken. He is backed by the party’s constitution and enjoys overwhelming support from true ADC loyalists nationwide. He will not be blackmailed, cajoled, or cowed into surrender. “Those posing as peacemakers while peddling the coalition agenda should beware, we will name and shame them. These backdoor royal agents are only proving how desperate and rattled the hijackers have become. “Our message to these wayward monarchs: Face your thrones, not our party. Your job is to promote peace in your domains, not sell out your crowns to scheming politicians in Abuja.” The African Democratic Congress is not for sale. We will resist every attempt to auction our party to political merchants. We will expose every collaborator, royal or otherwise, who stands in the way of our democratic rescue mission. |
The Acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and incumbent Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala, has firmly denied allegations stemming from a fabricated resignation letter purportedly issued on May 18, 2025. In a detailed statement, Bala condemned the document as entirely false and deceptive, attributing its circulation to certain mischievous elements both within and outside the party. He said: “I am writing to address a matter of utmost importance that has recently surfaced in the public domain, a fabricated letter of resignation purportedly authored by me, Nafiu Bala, dated 18 May 2025. This document, which has been circulated by certain mischievous elements within and outside our party, is entirely false and without merit. “I wish to unequivocally state that I have not resigned from my position as the Deputy National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The timing and content of this fake resignation letter are not only misleading but also riddled with glaring contradictions that raise serious questions about its authenticity. “Notably, while the letter claims I resigned on 18 May 2025, it is critical to highlight that on 2 July 2025, during a meeting to receive certain new members into the ADC at the Yar'Adua Conference Center in Abuja, my predecessor, Ralph Nwosu, publicly declared his own resignation. “In his address to the global media, he made a specific mention of my status, stating, “Nafiu Bala did not resign as the Deputy National Chairman.” This statement alone invalidates any claims of my resignation and underscores the deceitful nature of the circulated letter. Furthermore, I would like to draw attention to the discrepancies between my official correspondence and the aforementioned fake resignation letter. “All my official communications have been conducted on the official headed paper of my office, which bears the emblem and insignia of the African Democratic Congress. In stark contrast, the fraudulent resignation letter is presented on plain paper, devoid of any official markings. This blatant difference in presentation further undermines the credibility of the document and highlights the nefarious intentions behind its circulation. “In light of these developments, I must also question the authenticity of those who are now posing as new leaders of our party. The Constitution of the African Democratic Congress clearly stipulates that any individual seeking to assume a leadership position must be a member of the party and must have maintained their financial obligations for a minimum of one year prior to their candidacy. “This provision has not been amended, and any claims to the contrary are simply unfounded. It is essential that we uphold the integrity of our party's Constitution and ensure that all leadership transitions adhere to the established guidelines. “The integrity of our party's governance structures must be preserved, and any actions taken outside of these formal processes cannot be recognized as legitimate.” Bala called on all party members, supporters, and the broader public to remain alert in the face of misinformation and to reject efforts aimed at sowing discord within the party ranks. He added, “Our party is built on the principles of democracy, transparency, and integrity, and it is imperative that we work together to uphold these values. “I reaffirm my commitment to the African Democratic Congress and its vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria. Together, we will continue to advance our agenda and serve the interests of the people we represent.” |
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a strategic link between Nigerian youth and the government, as it inaugurated new national directorates. The NYCN also tasked the newly inaugurated directors to treat their roles as akin to ministries within the youth governance structure, urging them to deliver on their mandates and extend leadership to the grassroots. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, President of NYCN, Solomon Adodo, declared a new era of revitalisation for the council, which he said had suffered years of inactivity and internal crises. Adodo also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstrating genuine interest in youth development, describing him as a leader who listens and values young people as collaborators in governance. He said: “Today, we are reviving, reinvigorating, and revitalising an organisation that was once comatose and near-dead. The Youth Council must serve its full essence and purpose. “We cannot make progress as a nation by fighting or opposing the government. We are expected to be partners in building the Nigeria of our dreams. “Never in our history have we had a leader more willing to engage and support the youth. Mr. President sees us as collaborators in governance." He stressed that the council's core mandate is to champion the interests of young Nigerians through constructive engagement rather than confrontation with government authorities. Also speaking, NYCN Deputy President, Rikki Nwajiofor, emphasized the importance of the national directorates in ensuring impactful synergy between the council and relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies. He noted that the directorates are expected to initiate impactful programmes, communicate youth-focused government initiatives to grassroots beneficiaries, and ensure that no young person is left behind. Nwajiofor said: “The directorates are developed to be the connecting point between NYCN and the various government ministries and parastatals. They serve as the wheels and tires of the National Executive Council of NYCN. “The directorates must ensure that all youth empowerment projects domiciled in various federal institutions are effectively communicated to grassroots youth, helping them benefit immensely from such initiatives.” Nwajiofor congratulated the newly appointed directors, urging them to justify their selection by exhibiting proactive leadership and delivering results. List of Inaugurated NYCN National Directorates and Appointees: Education, Training and Scholarships: Comrade Olalekan Ganiyu Abolarin; Sports, Recreation and Social Affairs: Mr. Augustine John; Employment, Job Creation and Skills Acquisition: Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe, Esq; Health: Dr. Eboh Joseph (JP); Environment, Housing and Ecology: Dr. Adesanwo Oluwatoyin; Transportation and Aviation Matters: Comrade Jolomi Ejeye. The Deputy National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has declared himself the Interim National Chairman of the party, citing a leadership crisis allegedly engineered by individuals he described as “political hooligans.” He described the development as an unprecedented assault on democracy and vowed to resist it. Gombe made this known on Thursday in Abuja during a press briefing, where he accused former party leaders of abandoning their constitutional responsibilities and handing over the party’s structures to “powerful outsiders” with no ties to the ADC. He also issued a public call to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently recognize the leadership change and uphold the sanctity of the ADC constitution. Gombe said: “I, Honourable Nafiu Bala, a bonafide member and a duly elected National Deputy Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), wishes to draw the attention of the entire members of our great party and Nigerians at large, to the ongoing acts of political hooliganism being perpetrated by some individuals who were hitherto entrusted with the leadership of the party. “We are all living witnesses to the show of shame and acts of lawlessness being displayed by these unscrupulous leaders, who without any qualm or sense of moral restraint, plunged our party to a needless crisis and leadership uncertainty. “The idea of mortgaging the future of our great party, by abdicating the constitutional duties and responsibilities of all elected officers of the party, to some powerful outsiders who never belong to the party, is condemnable. ”Recently, the nation woke up only to be greeted by a shoddily rehearsed political melodrama, in which elected roles were switched with certain groups of political strangers in order to facilitate the complete takeover of the party structures and its political appurtenances. “This total surrender and capitulation is without any known precedent in our democratic journey to constitutional order. We are therefore strongly resolved and collectively determined to challenge this affront and ensure that the party's laid down rules and stipulated provisions are respected and strictly adhered to by all those who belong to it. “In case these individuals choose to ignore our urgent calls to obey our constitutional guidelines and thus remain very obdurate and recalcitrant in their aberrant behaviour, we shall proceed with gusto to challenge these gross acts of impunity in the courts and bring them to justice. “It gives us enormous pain to inundate you with these scandalous happenings in our party, but, we have been left with no other option to take in defence of our inalienable constitutional rights, as evident by the prevailing situation we now find ourselves in the party. “In the history of democracy all over the world, no party leader or any group of leaders have the power to arbitrarily transfer elected mandate or political authority to non-members and who never belong or contested for political office.” He reaffirmed his commitment to restoring constitutional order and internal democracy within the ADC, adding that the constitution provides clear guidelines for succession and filling vacant positions. He added, “The constitution of our great party has made adequate provision as laid down in many clauses, articulating the succession guidelines and how even vacant positions should be constitutionally filled. “In the circumstance and also in furtherance of my constitutional mandate as the duly elected National Deputy Chairman of our great party, I now assume my constitutional duty and responsibility as the Interim National Chairman of our great party. “Therefore, I am hereby calling on the esteemed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to so urgently step in to take due cognisance of this development.” |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has commended the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation for its visionary leadership and commitment to strengthening democracy through an interactive two-day programme focused on enhancing government-citizen engagement. According to DWI, the programme represents a significant step toward reinforcing accountability, transparency, and civic participation in Nigeria’s democratic process. In a statement issued on Wednesday, by Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, Director of Strategic Communication at Democracy Watch Initiative, the organization described the initiative as a beacon of hope in a time where the relationship between citizens and government is often marred by distrust and misinformation. The event, was for July 29 and 30, 2025, at Arewa House in Kaduna, is themed "Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Development." He said: “In a world where the relationship between government and citizens is often fraught with misunderstanding and skepticism, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation stands out as a beacon of hope and collaboration. “The foundation's commitment to fostering a culture of dialogue and transparency is commendable and essential for the growth of a vibrant democratic society. The interactive programme serves as a timely platform for evaluating the progress made by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in fulfilling electoral promises made during the 2023 presidential campaign. “The Democracy Watch Initiative recognizes the importance of this follow-up event, especially in the context of the successful interactive session held with presidential candidates in October 2022. “That event marked a pivotal moment in our nation’s political landscape, as it facilitated a direct engagement between the electorate and those vying for leadership positions. The commitments secured during that session laid the groundwork for a renewed sense of accountability and responsibility among our leaders. “As we approach the 2025 interactive programme, it is imperative to assess the strides made in delivering on those commitments. Two years into President Tinubu's administration, citizens have a right to inquire about the tangible outcomes of the promises made. “This upcoming event will not only provide a forum for government officials to present their achievements and challenges but will also empower citizens to voice their concerns, expectations, and aspirations. Such dialogue is crucial for fostering a sense of ownership among citizens regarding national development. “Moreover, the interactive programme aims to address the prevalent misinformation and misconceptions surrounding government policies and actions. In an era characterized by rapid information dissemination, it has become increasingly important to ensure that citizens have access to accurate and comprehensive information. “By promoting transparency and open communication, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation is playing a vital role in bridging the gap between the government and the governed. This initiative will undoubtedly contribute to building trust, which is the cornerstone of any thriving democracy.” By bridging the gap between government and the governed, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, according to DWI, is playing a key role in restoring trust and fostering civic responsibility. The interactive structure of the event is designed to encourage collaborative problem-solving and inclusive policy-making. He added, “The Democracy Watch Initiative is particularly encouraged by the emphasis on constructive dialogue within the programme’s framework. Engaging citizens in meaningful conversations about governance not only strengthens democratic practices but also fosters a culture of civic responsibility. As citizens become more informed and involved, they are better equipped to hold their leaders accountable, thereby enhancing the overall quality of governance. “We also recognize the broader implications of this programme for national development. When citizens and government work collaboratively, it leads to more effective policies and programs that reflect the needs and aspirations of the populace. The interactive nature of the event will facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, allowing for the co-creation of solutions to the challenges facing our nation. “Together, let us foster an environment of open dialogue and collaboration, ensuring that our government remains responsive to the needs of its citizens. We look forward to the outcomes of the 2-day interactive programme and the positive impact it will have on our collective journey toward a more democratic and prosperous Nigeria.” |
The Northern Youth Frontiers (North West Zone), has refuted recent comments made by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), alleging that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sidelined Northern Nigeria in its development agenda. In a statement issued on Monday, the North West Coordinator of the group, Saminu Tukur, described Kwankwaso’s claims as misleading and politically motivated, aimed more at triggering controversy than fostering constructive discourse. Tukur further encouraged young Northerners to support efforts that foster unity, growth, and transparent governance, rather than being used as tools in political battles. He said: “In light of recent statements made by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), regarding the alleged neglect of Northern Nigeria by the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Northwest Zone of the Northern Youth Frontiers feels compelled to clarify the facts and set the record straight. “We recognize the importance of political discourse in our democratic process; however, it is crucial that such discussions are grounded in truth and constructive engagement rather than unfounded claims. “Kwankwaso's assertion that the Northern region is being overlooked in terms of development is not only misleading but also appears to be a strategic maneuver aimed at prompting the government to disclose the extensive array of projects that have been initiated or completed in the North under President Tinubu’s leadership. “This tactic, while not uncommon in the political arena, deserves scrutiny, particularly when it risks sowing discord among the very constituents it purports to represent.” Tukur noted that President Tinubu’s administration has, over the past two years, implemented a wide range of impactful projects across Northern Nigeria, particularly in critical sectors like infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and energy. He added, “These initiatives are not mere promises; they represent a tangible commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the region. From the construction of new roads and bridges to the enhancement of healthcare facilities and the promotion of agricultural innovation, the federal government has made significant strides in transforming the socio-economic landscape of Northern Nigeria. “For instance, the ongoing road infrastructure projects aim to improve connectivity and accessibility, which are essential for economic activities and the movement of goods and services. “The revitalization of agricultural initiatives, including the provision of modern farming equipment and training for farmers, is set to boost productivity and food security in the region. Additionally, investments in healthcare facilities are designed to ensure that citizens have access to quality medical services, thereby enhancing overall well-being. “It is important to note that the success of these projects hinges on collaboration and transparency. As such, we are confident that Kwankwaso is aware of these developments, and we anticipate that he will soon acknowledge the progress being made. “However, it is imperative that such recognition does not come at the expense of fostering division among the youth of Northern Nigeria. The potential for political manipulation is ever-present, and we urge the youth to remain vigilant and discerning. “We call upon the youth of Northern Nigeria to resist the temptation to be used by unscrupulous and desperate politicians who seek to incite unnecessary confrontation with the government. History has shown that such tactics often lead to conflict and strife, diverting attention from the real issues at hand and hindering progress. “Instead, we encourage the youth to engage in constructive dialogue and to hold their leaders accountable in a manner that promotes unity and development. As we move forward, it is essential that we collectively recognize the importance of fostering a sense of community and collaboration among all stakeholders in the region. “The challenges we face are significant, but they are not insurmountable. By working together, we can ensure that the benefits of development reach every corner of Northern Nigeria, creating a more integrated and prosperous nation. We at Northwest Democracy Watch reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the truth and promoting the interests of the people of Northern Nigeria. “We stand firm in our belief that the Tinubu administration is dedicated to the development of the region and that the ongoing projects are a testament to this commitment. We encourage all citizens to remain informed, engaged, and united as we navigate the path toward a brighter future for Northern Nigeria.” |

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has issued an urgent call to the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action in the face of an impending flood crisis threatening vast parts of Northern Nigeria. In a statement released on Tuesday, NEF Spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, warned that based on current rainfall patterns, historical precedents, and official weather alerts, the region is on the brink of a severe environmental and humanitarian disaster. Jiddere said: “As we enter the critical month of August, traditionally marked by peak rainfall, there is an immediate need for coordinated federal and state-level intervention to avert the catastrophic consequences of inaction. Historical Precedence of Devastating Floods in the North: “2012: Floods began in early July, killing 363 people, displacing over 2.1 million Nigerians, and impacting 30 of the 36 states. Kogi and Benue States both in the North were the worst hit, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). “2022: Over 600 lives were lost, 1.3 million people displaced, 5,700 homes destroyed, and critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, farmlands, roads, and electricity networks - were severely damaged. “9th September 2024: Borno State suffered a man-made disaster triggered by the collapse of Alau Dam in Konduga LGA. The resulting flash floods devastated Maiduguri and Jere LGAs, leading to multiple fatalities and widespread destruction. “28th May 2025: Mokwa town in Niger State experienced deadly flooding caused by torrential rainfall. Official reports confirmed over 500 fatalities, 600 missing persons, mainly children, the elderly, and physically challenged, and the destruction of 4,000 homes, farmlands, and critical public infrastructure. “An additional 3,600 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries, and 300 children were diagnosed with acute post-flood illnesses. A full-scale humanitarian crisis including unsafe drinking water, poor shelter, inadequate healthcare, and electricity outages continue to unfold.” The NEF cited a recent alert issued on 16th July 2025, the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre (FEWS Centre) under the Federal Ministry of Environment issued an official flood alert for 11 states, 9 of which are in Northern Nigeria: Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, and Zamfara. This data, when juxtaposed with current weather forecasts and infrastructural vulnerabilities, confirms the extreme risk of flooding from now through the end of September 2025. The Northern Elders Forum called on the Federal Government, in collaboration with affected state governments, to urgently, “Immediately activate flood emergency response plans; Strengthen and clear all urban and rural drainage systems; Reinforce dam infrastructure and ensure proper regulation of water releases; Construct flood barriers, diversion canals, retention ponds, and reservoirs in flood-prone zones. “Engage in urgent diplomatic dialogue with the Republic of Cameroon to manage water discharges from the Lagdo Dam, ensuring prior notification and mitigation cooperation with Nigeria; Pre-position sandbags and emergency flood mitigation kits in high-risk communities; Deploy public awareness campaigns on evacuation procedures and risk reduction practices. “Failure to act promptly will result in avoidable loss of life, destruction of property, displacement, and economic dislocation at a scale that Northern Nigeria can not afford. This is not merely a warning. It is a declaration of a national threat. The time to act is now.” |
The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), has condemned what it described as the “opportunistic behavior” of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing both politicians of attempting to exploit the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari for political gain. The NYF urged northern citizens, especially the youth, to remain vigilant and not allow their emotions to be exploited by what it called “false narratives and superficial displays of camaraderie.” In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja, the National Coordinator of NYF, Sama Musa, said the group is “deeply dismayed” by recent actions and public posturing by the two politicians, who he claims are now parading themselves as close allies of the late former president. He said: “We specifically refer to the opportunistic maneuvers of Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, who, in their desperation, have attempted to present themselves as allies of the late President. We find this behavior not only disingenuous but also an affront to the memory of a leader who dedicated his life to the service of our nation. “It is with a heavy heart that we observe the manner in which these politicians have showcased themselves as genuine friends of Buhari, attempting to deceive the northern electorate. This narrative is not only misleading but also a blatant distortion of the truth. “The Northern Youth Frontiers firmly believes that the people of the North are not so easily swayed by the theatrics of politicians who have historically opposed the very ideals and policies championed by President Buhari. “Atiku Abubakar, a perennial presidential aspirant, has long been a figure of contention within the political landscape of Nigeria. His record speaks for itself; he has consistently positioned himself as a rival to the principles that President Buhari stood for. “The same can be said for Nasir El-Rufai, whose political strategies have often been at odds with the vision of unity and progress that Buhari aimed to cultivate during his presidency. It is, therefore, both ironic and absurd that these individuals now seek to align themselves with the late President’s legacy, as if they were ever true allies. “The Northern Youth Frontiers categorically rejects the notion that Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai can rebrand themselves as champions of Buhari’s vision. Their sudden display of affection for the late President is nothing more than a desperate attempt to manipulate the emotions of the northern populace in the wake of a profound loss. “We stand firm in our belief that the North will not be swayed by such insincerity. We are a people of integrity, and we will not allow our sentiments to be exploited by those who have historically been adversaries of our leaders and our values. “It is essential to remind these politicians that the North is not a monolith; we are a diverse community with a rich tapestry of beliefs, aspirations, and political affiliations. “We have seen through the veil of desperation that Atiku and El-Rufai have donned in Daura in their attempts to align themselves with the legacy of President Buhari. The people of the North are discerning and will not allow themselves to be misled by false narratives or superficial displays of camaraderie. “Furthermore, we urge the northern electorate to remain vigilant against the tactics employed by politicians who seek to capitalize on tragedy for their own gain. “The death of President Buhari is not merely a political event; it is a moment of reflection, mourning, and respect for a leader who dedicated his life to the betterment of Nigeria. It is a time for us to honor his legacy through unity, progress, and a commitment to the ideals he championed.” The youth group concluded by calling on all citizens to support leaders who genuinely reflect the values of integrity, unity, and service, the very principles they say Buhari stood for. Musa added, “As representatives of the youth in the North, we call upon all citizens to engage in constructive dialogue and to seek out leaders who genuinely embody the principles of integrity, service, and dedication to the welfare of the people. “Let us not be swayed by the fleeting allure of opportunism, but rather, let us focus on the future we wish to build in honor of President Buhari’s memory. “The Northern Youth Frontiers stands resolutely against the attempts of Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai to exploit the legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. We implore them to cease their charade and to respect the memory of a leader who fought tirelessly for the unity and advancement of our nation. “The North will not be fooled; we are united in our resolve to honor our past while forging a future that reflects the true values of our people.” |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has issued a scathing rebuke of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of blatant political opportunism during the funeral rites of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week. In a strongly worded statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, the group described the duo’s conduct at the funeral in Daura as a “shameless and unseemly spectacle,” alleging that both men attempted to hijack the solemn occasion for political gain. He said: “Their actions, characterized by a shameless attempt to project themselves as genuine admirers and loyalists of a leader whose legacy they have historically opposed, are not only disingenuous but also an affront to the memory of President Buhari and the sentiments of the Nigerian people. “As we gather to pay our respects to a leader who dedicated his life to the service of our nation, it is disheartening to witness two notorious political figures, Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, attempting to capitalize on the sorrowful occasion for their own political gain. “Their behavior at the funeral in Daura was nothing short of an unseemly spectacle, as they paraded around as though they owned the event, seeking to associate themselves with Buhari's immense popularity in a desperate bid to win favor with the northern electorate. “Let us remind the public that Atiku Abubakar has been a major political adversary of Buhari since 2003, challenging him in several elections and consistently undermining his agenda. His political history is marked by opportunism; after splintering the People's Democratic Party (PDP), he shifted allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) only to abandon it once Buhari secured victory in the elections. “Atiku's return to the PDP was not born out of loyalty but rather a calculated move to further his own ambitions, culminating in his recent challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is widely regarded as Buhari's preferred successor. “It is painfully clear that Atiku's current display of affection for Buhari is nothing more than a façade, a mere attempt to manipulate the sentiments of the northern populace in a time of mourning.” The Democracy Watch Initiative wishes to state unequivocally that the northern voters are not as easily deceived as Atiku and El-Rufai might hope. “The memories of their past betrayals and political machinations remain fresh in the minds of the electorate, and they will not be swayed by hollow gestures during this time of grief.” He urge the citizens of the North and indeed all Nigerians to remain vigilant and discerning in the face of such opportunism. As we honor the legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, let us not allow his memory to be tarnished by those who seek to exploit it for their own gain. The Democracy Watch Initiative calls onl political actors to engage in genuine and respectful discourse, honoring the values that President Buhari stood for, integrity, service, and commitment to the Nigerian people. “We reject the attempts of Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai to politicize the funeral of a beloved leader. We stand united in our belief that the politics of deception will not prevail, and we call upon the people of the North to remember the past and hold their leaders accountable. “Let us honor President Buhari's legacy by fostering a political environment rooted in sincerity and respect, free from the manipulative tactics of those who have historically sought to undermine it.” he added. |
The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his exemplary leadership and deep sense of national unity demonstrated during the funeral arrangements of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari. The NYF also welcomed President Tinubu’s directive for the national flag to be flown at half-mast for seven days, along with the declaration of a one-day national holiday in Buhari’s honor. In a statement by the National Coordinator of NYF, Sama Musa, the group praised President Tinubu for conducting the late president’s final journey with dignity and respect, noting that it reflected the profound regard Buhari commanded and the strength of Nigeria’s unity during difficult times. NYF urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from Buhari’s vision for a better Nigeria and his belief in the nation's potential. Musa said: “The passing of Muhammadu Buhari marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s history. As a leader, he devoted his life to the service of our great nation, advocating for peace, security, and economic development. “His tenure was characterized by a commitment to fighting corruption, enhancing national security, and promoting infrastructural growth. Buhari’s virtues of integrity, resilience, and dedication to public service have left an indelible mark on the hearts of Nigerians and will continue to inspire future generations. “In this solemn time, President Tinubu’s decision to delegate a high-powered group under the esteemed leadership of Vice President Kashim Shettima to oversee the protocol for transporting the body of our late President from London to Daura is a testament to his leadership acumen. “This delegation not only ensured that the logistics were handled with the utmost respect and efficiency but also exemplified the collaborative spirit that is essential for a nation to heal and unite in mourning. “President Tinubu's decision to order the national flag to fly at half-mast for seven days, alongside the declaration of a one-day national holiday in honor of former President Buhari, reflects a profound commitment to national unity and collective mourning. “This gesture not only signifies respect for Buhari's contributions to the nation but also serves to engage the entire populace in a shared moment of reflection. By fostering a sense of solidarity during this period of grief, Tinubu underscores the importance of collective memory in shaping Nigeria's political and social landscape, while reinforcing the values of respect and remembrance within the nation's consciousness. “As we reflect on the life and contributions of Muhammadu Buhari, we are reminded of his unwavering commitment to the Nigerian people. He was a leader who believed in the potential of our nation and worked tirelessly to uplift the lives of ordinary citizens. “His vision for a prosperous Nigeria was rooted in his deep love for the country and its people. The Northern Youth Frontiers recognizes the sacrifices he made, often at great personal cost, to ensure a better future for all Nigerians.” The group further emphasized the need for unity in honoring national leaders, irrespective of political or regional affiliations, applauding the solidarity shown during the mourning period. The NYF also expressed unwavering support for President Tinubu and his administration as they guide the nation through this period of mourning, urging all citizens to uphold the principles that President Buhari championed. He added, “In commemorating Buhari’s life, we also acknowledge the importance of unity in our national discourse. President Tinubu’s leadership during this time serves as a reminder that, regardless of our various affiliations. “We must come together to honor those who have served our nation with dignity. The camaraderie displayed during this period is a reflection of our shared values and collective aspirations for a united Nigeria. “The Northern Youth Frontiers stands in solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration as they navigate this period of national mourning.” |

In a coordinated effort to reshape the mining sector across Africa, Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) is steadily expanding its grassroots presence through the establishment of national and community-based chapters serving as localized platforms for engagement. From artisanal mining communities to academic institutions and youth networks, this expansion is opening up space for more inclusive participation in the extractive sector. Now present in over 36 African countries, WiM-Africa has evolved into one of the continent’s active gender-focused networks in mining and development. Its chapters are providing structured forums where women miners, students, cooperatives, civil society, and sector stakeholders work together to promote more equitable, accountable, and inclusive mining practices. Speaking on the expansion, Dr. Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji, Executive Director of WiM-Africa, said that through this growing network, WiM-Africa is advancing its Seven-Point Program Agenda and its strategic focus areas, with particular interest in youth leadership, mineral value addition, digital advocacy, ESG, and safety. These chapters function as operational arms for locally relevant activities and coordination, bridging the gap between continental policy goals and community-level realities. WiM-Africa’s chapter expansion model is increasingly referenced by development partners for its alignment with Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By localizing broader strategic goals, the platform enables practical engagement with communities while maintaining a common vision for gender equity in Africa’s mineral future. Chapters currently live in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, Namibia, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, South Sudan, and more, serving as hubs for action, research, and transformation. With each new chapter comes the potential to create safe mining zones, support women-led cooperatives, and promote responsible and inclusive governance at the grassroots. In the diaspora, new chapters are also emerging with a strong focus on trade, investment, and knowledge exchange, positioning African professionals abroad to contribute directly to local value chains, business linkages, and mineral sector innovation. These diaspora-led chapters are key to connecting global expertise with grassroots transformation. Asokoro-Ogaji, emphasized that the power of this movement lies in “its ability to decentralize leadership, ignite local action, and connect thousands of women and allies across borders with a unified voice.” To ensure effectiveness, WiM-Africa upholds clear standards on governance, gender balance, ethics, and reporting. Approved chapters benefit from structured orientation, implementation tools, and access to joint advocacy campaigns. New chapters are being launched regularly, including in diaspora communities, and Men Allyship Chapters are also being established as formal entry points for men committed to gender equity in the mining sector. These chapters, composed of up to 80% male membership, play a vital role in advancing WiM-Africa’s inclusive objectives by promoting respectful allyship, safe workplace cultures, and co-leadership models. From policy engagement to mentorship of women-led cooperatives, men are stepping forward as partners in building a more just and equitable mining industry. The Secretariat encourages women, youth, and professionals regardless of gender, to explore opportunities for engagement by starting a chapter or connecting with their national focal point. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness. In a statement by the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s immediate family, the Daura Emirate, the people and government of Katsina State, the Federal Government, and Nigerians across the country. He said: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, friends, associates, and indeed, all Nigerians who are mourning the loss of a man who played a significant role in Nigeria's history both as a military leader and a democratically elected president. “The CNG extends condolences to the Daura Emirate, people and Government of Katsina, the Federal Government and Nigerians at large.” The CNG acknowledged Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, highlighting his roles as Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as civilian President from 2015 to 2023. His contributions, sacrifices, and leadership will forever be a part of Nigeria’s national narrative. The CNG urges leaders at all levels of government to take this moment to reflect on the ephemerality of life and power. Charanchi added, “We call on those in positions of authority to renew their commitment to delivering justice, security, development, and good governance to the people. “Let this moment serve as a solemn reminder that leadership is a sacred trust, and that true legacies are not built on titles or tenure, but on tangible impact and service to humanity.” Offering prayers for the late president, the CNG said: “May the soul of Muhammadu Buhari rest in peace, and may Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. May his family have the strength to bear the painful loss." |
