Stakeholders in the media, security sector, traditional institutions and government, have advocated for the critical role of ethical reporting in addressing insecurity and promoting peace in Nigeria. The stakeholders spoke at a two-day summit themed, “Security Journalism and Its Economic Impact on National Development,” where they emphasized that responsible and factual reporting has a direct impact on national security, economic growth, and public safety. Speaking at the summit, the President of the Centre, Muhammad Abdullahi Ado, highlighted the increasing threat posed by misinformation, especially through social media platforms. Organized by the Centre for Patriotism and Values Re-Orientation, the summit brought together senior military officials, traditional rulers, government representatives, and media professionals from across the country to explore the nexus between journalism and national security. Ado said: “We are in a time where having truthful and verified information is becoming increasingly rare. Social media has taken over traditional information channels, often spreading unverified or harmful content. This summit is our response to that challenge, we brought together journalists, security agencies, and even social media influencers to champion truth and professionalism in reporting. “Security and media are closely linked. When reporters work ethically, it helps strengthen public trust and supports the security architecture of our nation.” In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who was represented, Major General M.G. Kanye stressed the importance of collaboration between media and security institutions. He called for improved welfare and legal protections for journalists who operate in conflict-sensitive environments. He said: “All those causing trouble in our land. They are not spirits. So our prayer and request to members of the Nigerian society is that whatever you see, whatever you write around, please give that information. If you cannot have access to security forces around you, there are members of the Nigerian police.” In her address, the First Lady of Kebbi State, Her Excellency Zainab Nasari Idris, also addressed the gathering, urging journalists, particularly young reporters to prioritize accuracy and integrity in their reports. She said: “Journalism plays a vital role in shaping the minds of the public. The peace and unity of this nation depend on how responsibly we report events, especially in times of crisis.” She was praised by Dr. Halima Muhammad Bande, Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education in Kebbi State, for her active role in empowering youth and women and addressing insecurity through grassroots initiatives. She said: “Through her foundation, the First Lady has provided skills training in tailoring, shoemaking, welding, and other vocational areas. She has also initiated the deployment of vigilantes to schools facing security threats and supported education through the provision of essential learning materials.” Dr. Bande added that the First Lady is not only a patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) but also a staunch supporter of peace journalism, advocating for the media to play a frontline role in tackling insecurity. Also speaking at the summit, the Former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Mamman Nami, described the summit’s focus as timely, noting that a peaceful environment is crucial to economic development and investor confidence. He called on all tiers of government to support journalists through fair remuneration, training, and legal protections, while also emphasizing the need for tax revenue to be invested wisely in areas that boost peace and development. He said: “It is an important event with a theme that is up because the event of the summit decided to lead the journalism with the security of our country. And in the course of our deliberations you will recall that everybody emphasized on professional journalism based on facts, journalism based on creativity, journalism that will ensure national unity, journalism that will promote our growth as a country that will ensure investment in our economy. “That will ensure more in the modern life, because it wasn't basically needed to go to like close the middle of the border, go and tax GDP, and also ensure good roads, good infrastructure, quality roads, for people that we need as a country. “And in the course of our generation we are able to advise the government at local government levels, at state level, and all at the federal level to invest tax payers and build investors' confidence so that people can continue to come into our country for investment in our economy.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has expressed profound sorrow and a deep sense of national loss following the passing of His Excellency, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.), former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2015–2023). In a solemn statement issued on behalf of the Forum, NEF Spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, described the late General Buhari as a “towering figure in Nigeria’s political and historical landscape,” whose life epitomized dedication, humility, and incorruptible service to the nation. He said: “The entire nation mourns the departure of a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and historical landscape. General Buhari was a statesman of rare character, a leader whose life was marked by unwavering dedication, humility, and incorruptible service to Nigeria.” General Buhari’s distinguished public service career spanned several decades. He served as Military Governor of the former North-Eastern State (1975–1976), later of Borno State, and as Federal Commissioner (Minister) of Petroleum. He rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army, serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC), Military Secretary at Army Headquarters, and Head of State from 1983 to 1985. He also chaired the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) before assuming office as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Jiddere added, “General Buhari was not only a soldier and statesman but a symbol of integrity and principled leadership. He was resolute in his belief in a unified, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria. “His tenure in office and his public life embodied his values of discipline, accountability, and national pride. As a devout nationalist and Pan-Africanist, he championed Nigeria’s sovereignty, defended its territorial integrity, and advanced the cause of democratic governance across Africa. “His passing marks a solemn moment in Nigeria’s history. Beyond the personal grief of his family and close associates, the entire nation shares in this profound loss. His legacy, defined by sacrifice, duty, and vision, will continue to guide and inspire future generations of Nigerian leaders and citizens.” The Forum acknowledged the collective grief felt by the nation and extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The NEF pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants General Muhammadu Buhari eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus and grants the nation the strength to bear this irreparable loss. “INNALILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN "Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return." |
In a concerted effort to curb the rising cases of virtual asset and investment fraud, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are set to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign aimed at educating Nigerians on the dangers of cybercrime and promoting a culture of financial integrity. Speaking at a public lecture organised by the EFCC to commemorate the African Union Anti-Corruption Day, the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, announced the Agency’s plan to roll out a comprehensive Digital Awareness Campaign across strategically selected states. He explained that the states would be chosen based on key vulnerability indicators such as prevalence of investment fraud, youth population density, and digital risk exposure. Mallam Issa-Onilu also revealed plans for a youth-focused initiative under the campaign. The programme is designed to instill ethical entrepreneurship, foster financial responsibility, and empower young Nigerians to make informed decisions, particularly those susceptible to online scams and get-rich-quick schemes. Highlighting the Agency’s broader commitment to combating societal crimes, the NOA Director-General noted that the Agency’s innovative AI-powered platform, CLHEEAN, has been instrumental in enabling citizens to report crime-related information anonymously. Reports submitted through the platform are directed to the appropriate security agencies for prompt action. In his remarks, EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, reaffirmed the Commission’s long-standing collaboration with NOA, especially in public enlightenment on government initiatives and anti-corruption efforts. He also urged Nigerians to support and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the ongoing fight against financial crimes. The event also featured the participation of key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dr. Emomotimi Agama; the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji; and representatives of the Women Society of Nigeria and various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). |
The Youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called for calm over the controversy surrounding the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader, Eze Chukwudi Ihenetu, as ‘Eze Ndi Igbo Ghana’ (King of the Igbo People in Ghana). This comes amid the widespread protests and public outcry across parts of Ghana over the installation. The development, which has drawn criticism from youth groups and cultural advocates, is being opposed by protesters who say the presence of a foreign monarch undermines Ghana’s sovereignty and traditional chieftaincy institutions. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said there was no cause for alarm. According to him, the title of ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ did not in any way undermine the customs and traditions of the host communities. He said, “it is a mere title that symbolizes the rallying figure of Ndigbo in their community of residence. “We have Eze Ndigbo in different countries of the world and they have never turned to be traditional rulers of their host communities. “The title has nothing to do with assuming the role of a monarch; far from that. “The holder of that title is only a rallying point for Ndigbo in such locations, through whom they can aggregate, discuss issues of common interest and solve members’ problems as they arise.” Okwu added that “our observation shows that Eze Ihenetu is committed to supporting education, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. His scholarship and skills initiatives benefit Nigerian and Ghanaian youths alike, promoting a productive, confident, and self-reliant diaspora community. “There is also evidence that he is a steadfast advocate for compassion, contributing to disaster relief, community health programs, and charitable outreach, irrespective of ethnicity or nationality. “Contrary to all the allegations being made, he has also preserved and promoted Igbo culture through flagship events like the annual New Yam Festival, fostered peace and unity between Nigerian and Ghanaian communities and supported youth empowerment, education, and entrepreneurship regardless of nationality.” He urged the people of Ghana not to be worried about the title as it was not in any way a challenge to their customs and traditions. |
Two prominent civil society organisations, on Wednesday, called on the Federal Government to urgently enforce court judgments declaring the occupation of Local Government Council Secretariats in Osun State by All Progressives Congress (APC) officials as illegal. In separate peaceful protest in Abuja, the Nigeria Society for Democracy and Good Governance (NSDGG) and the Coalition of Civil Society for Justice and Equity (CCSJE) urged the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Minister of Finance to intervene by recognising and funding only the duly elected officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The protest march began at the Unity Fountain and proceeded to the offices of both ministers, where letters were submitted demanding strict adherence to the rule of law and full implementation of valid court rulings. According to the CSOs, the PDP Chairmen and Councillors were validly elected on February 22, 2025, in an election conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. However, despite court rulings voiding the appointments of APC officials, the party’s functionaries allegedly continue to occupy council offices across the state. Speaking to journalists at the protest, Chairman of the CCSJE, Comrade Collins Idowu, stressed the financial and constitutional dangers of the ongoing crisis. He called on the Minister of Finance to withhold further allocations to illegally occupying APC officials and instead channel funds to the duly elected PDP Chairmen and Councillors. He said: “The current situation in Osun State is not merely a political issue; it is a profound threat to the rule of law and democratic governance. Despite clear court judgments that have invalidated the APC officials’ claims to their positions. “They continue to occupy Local Government Council Secretariats, undermining the very foundation of our democracy. This blatant disregard for judicial authority and electoral integrity is alarming and poses significant financial implications for the state and its citizens.” Also speaking during a separate protest on the same issue, the spokesperson for the NSDGG, Ambassador Usman Saidu Calculus, described the situation as “a direct threat to democracy.” He warned that continued financial support to those without a legal mandate sets a dangerous precedent and may trigger instability and chaos at the grassroots governance level. Calculus said: “The NSDGG stands firm in its commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria, and we believe that your actions in this matter will reflect the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and the principles of democracy. “We demand that the government act decisively to rectify this situation by recognizing the rightful representatives of the people and ensuring that public funds are allocated accordingly. “The citizens of Osun State deserve to have their voices heard and their choices respected. We trust that you will take the necessary steps to uphold the rule of law and restore democratic governance in Osun State.”

The North Central Citizens Council (NCCC), has rejected the newly formed opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, branding it a "coalition of confusion" made up of "disgruntled political actors desperate for relevance." They further emphasized that while Nigeria faces challenges, citizens must remain alert and discerning, recognizing that those now pushing to ‘save the nation’ were key contributors to the very crises they now condemn. The Publicity Secretary of the NCCC, Jonathan Omodayo, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, said the group’s rejection of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition was rooted in its belief that the alliance is composed of “disgruntled individuals” seeking relevance after years of political setbacks. He urged citizens to support the ongoing efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which, according to him, is still laying the foundation for economic reform, infrastructure development, and national cohesion. He said: “NCCC stands resolutely against the recent alliance formed by the likes of Atiku Abubakar and a host of other disgruntled political figures. This coalition, which we shall refer to as the ADC alliance, is not only a collection of frustrated individuals but also a manifestation of confusion and disillusionment that has plagued our political landscape for far too long. “It is imperative that we reflect on the burdens of failure carried by the individuals who constitute this alliance. Atiku Abubakar, a perennial candidate, has repeatedly failed to secure the mandate of the Nigerian people. “His political journey is marked by a series of disappointments that have left him clutching at straws in a desperate bid for relevance. The citizens of Nigeria have not forgotten the promises made during his previous campaigns, promises that were never fulfilled. “Instead of learning from past mistakes, Atiku has chosen to align himself with those who share his penchant for political maneuvering rather than genuine service to the people.” The NCCC further listed other prominent members of the coalition, including Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Sule Lamido, Abubakar Malami, and Hadi Sirika, accusing them of contributing to Nigeria’s political and economic stagnation during their years in government. Omodayo called on Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which, he said, is still in the early stages of rebuilding national institutions, addressing economic reform, and promoting national unity. He added, “The formation of political coalitions is a fundamental aspect of democratic engagement; however, it becomes particularly disconcerting when those who once held significant power now present themselves as solutions to the very problems they contributed to. “The legacy of mismanagement, corruption, and systemic inefficiencies that characterized their previous tenures casts a long shadow over their newfound positions as reformers. This raises a critical question: if Nigeria is currently facing profound challenges, to what extent are these former leaders accountable for the nation’s plight? “Their past actions must be scrutinized to ensure that the cycle of misgovernance does not persist under a guise of reform. The paradox is striking: individuals who have held significant power for a minimum of eight years now rally to portray themselves as saviors of a nation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has only been in office for two years.” Omodayo urged Nigerians to reject what he described as the “politics of grievance” and instead unite behind a shared vision of national development, adding that, “We must not allow the ghosts of past leadership failures to dictate our future. Let us not be swayed by empty promises from those who once had the chance to lead but chose personal gain over public good.” The NCCC reaffirmed its confidence in the Tinubu administration and its ongoing efforts to deliver sustainable progress across all sectors, calling on Nigerians to remain focused, united, and committed to the nation’s growth. |
The South-South Youth Amalgamation (SSYA), has voiced strong reservations over the newly formed political coalition between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and prominent political figures, including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. The SSYA emphasized that Nigeria's political trajectory is shaped not by the personal ambitions of a few, but by the will of the people and a tradition that reflects the country’s federal character and democratic values. In a statement signed by its Chairman, John Alber Carlkson, the group acknowledged the democratic right of political actors to form alliances but questioned the motives and viability of this particular coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Carlkson said: “While we acknowledge the right of individuals and groups to pursue political alliances, we must express our grave concerns regarding the motivations and viability of this particular coalition. “At the heart of this new alliance lies an inordinate ambition that appears to prioritize personal gain over the collective good of the Nigerian populace. It is imperative to recognize that the coalition lacks the necessary capacity to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections. “The political landscape of Nigeria is not merely a chessboard for the ambitions of a few; it is a complex system governed by historical precedents and the will of the people. The principle that has long guided the pendulum of power in Nigeria is clear: after eight years of leadership from the North, the mantle of governance returns to the South. This cycle is not merely a matter of tradition; it reflects the democratic will of the Nigerian electorate. “The SSYA firmly believes that the ADC coalition, despite its claims, cannot alter this established order. The coalition's leaders may possess titles and past positions, but their track record raises serious questions about their ability to affect meaningful change. “We must not forget the context in which these individuals have operated. The political atmosphere is littered with the remnants of their previous endeavors, parties and movements that suffered under their leadership and strategic miscalculations. “The SSYA is concerned that the same destructive attitudes that led to their erstwhile parties’ decline are now being imported into the ADC. Their arrival is marked not by humility or a commitment to collaboration, but rather by a brash assertion of their importance, as if the ADC was devoid of talent and vision prior to their involvement. “The people of Nigeria deserve better than to be subjected to the whims of a coalition that has demonstrated a penchant for self-serving politics. It is disheartening to witness former leaders, who have had ample opportunities to contribute positively to their communities, now scrambling for relevance by aligning themselves with a new party. Their actions suggest a lack of genuine commitment to the progress of the nation and an alarming disregard for the principles of accountability and transparency.” Citing past political missteps by individuals such as Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Abubakar Malami, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, Sule Lamido, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi, the SSYA argued that many of these figures had failed to deliver credible developmental milestones during their tenures. He added, “Who will follow these individuals into the future? The SSYA believes that the Nigerian electorate is increasingly discerning and will not be swayed by mere rhetoric. “The evidence of their past performances of Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Abubakar Malami, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, Sule Lamido, Rauf Aregbesola and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is scant, and the development they claim to have fostered during their tenures remains unsubstantiated. “The people of Nigeria are not easily fooled; they seek leaders who have demonstrated integrity, vision, and a genuine commitment to national progress. As we move towards the 2027 elections, it is crucial for the Nigerian populace to remain vigilant and discerning. “The SSYA calls upon our fellow citizens to critically evaluate the motivations behind this coalition and to resist the allure of superficial alliances that lack substantive merit. The political future of our great nation should not be left to the whims of those who prioritize personal ambition over collective progress. “The South-South Youth Amalgamation stands firm in its belief that the ADC coalition, as currently constituted, is not a viable alternative to the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.” They also urge Nigerians to focus their attention on leaders who genuinely represent their interests and who are committed to the development of our nation. “Let us not be distracted by the noise of inordinate ambition, but rather remain steadfast in our pursuit of a brighter future for all.” |
Former Secretary of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in Kano State, Dr. Bala Muhammad Inuwa, on Saturday, challenged Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, to test his political strength without relying on the popularity of Peter Obi. Its said that the Labour Party’s performance in the 2023 general elections was not based on its structure but was largely driven by the credibility and connection Obi had with the people. In a statement, Dr. Inuwa criticized Datti’s recent remarks opposing the formation of a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing his comments as disappointing and detached from Nigeria’s current political and economic realities. He urged Datti and other critics to contribute constructively rather than attack the efforts of others working to build a viable political alternative. Inuwa said: “Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed’s recent remarks against the emerging opposition coalition are not only disappointing, they reveal a troubling disconnect from the political realities of today’s Nigeria. “While he is entitled to his views, it is important to remind him that the modest recognition he enjoys today is largely owed to his association with Mr. Peter Obi. Without Obi’s credibility and mass appeal, Datti would have remained a footnote in Nigeria’s political discourse. “In 2023, Nigerians rallied behind the Labour Party not because of its structures, but because Obi inspired hope. He connected with the people. Datti, though articulate and educated, played a peripheral role. “He failed to mobilize meaningfully in the North, did not engage local communities, and ultimately could not deliver his polling unit, ward, or constituency. His contribution was limited and the results reflected that. “This coalition is not about ego or ambition. It is a response to the suffering of millions under a government that has delivered hardship at scale. From soaring inflation to worsening insecurity, Nigerians are desperate for relief. While Datti engages in televised commentary, ordinary citizens are choosing between food and transport. That is the urgency driving this movement. “His opposition to the coalition raises a fundamental question: is he more concerned with personal relevance than national redemption? If he truly believes he can lead Nigeria’s recovery, let him contest under the Labour Party, without Obi, and see what the people say. Politics is not about studio appearances or sentimental rhetoric. It is about credibility, presence, and public trust." Inuwa acknowledged that it faces internal scrutiny but called on dissenters like Datti to contribute to its growth rather than attack it from the sidelines. He challenged Datti to go solo if he truly believes in his political influence. He added, “If Datti is serious about change, let him contribute constructively. Let him join hands with those working to build a credible alternative, not undermine them from the sidelines. The time for division is over. This coalition is moving forward, with or without him. History won’t wait. Nigerians won’t either. “As the ADC coalition gains momentum, it faces scrutiny, some fair, some politically motivated. Critics argue that its leaders are driven by ambition rather than ideology. But the question remains: why can’t figures like Datti help address these concerns and strengthen the coalition’s credibility? “Perhaps because, without Peter Obi, Datti’s political relevance fades. If he believes otherwise, let him seek validation from his party, contest the presidential ticket, earn the endorsement of Labour Party stakeholders, and prove his worth. Until then, the noise is just that noise.” |
The Oduwa People's Assembly (OPA), has condemned the newly formed alliance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and called on Nigerians to reject the coalition. OPA said that the ADC lacks the organizational strength and ideological clarity needed to mount a credible challenge in the 2027 general elections. In a statement signed by the OPA Chairman, Rechard Oltunji Kayode, the group expressed grave concern over what it called the "self-serving ambitions" of political figures in the coalition, warning that the alliance poses more of a threat to national progress than a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the coalition of opportunists lacking the vision, cohesion, and integrity to offer meaningful leadership to Nigerians. He said: “The Oduwa People's Assembly calls upon all Nigerians to reject the Atiku-led ADC coalition, which is characterized by opportunism, disunity, and a lack of genuine commitment to the nation’s progress.” He said that the alliance is already showing signs of disunity, with members focused on individual ambitions rather than a common purpose. Kayode added, “In light of the recent formation of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alliance, led by the self-serving Atiku Abubakar and a cadre of opportunistic leaders, the Oduwa People's Assembly (OPA) feels compelled to articulate our grave concerns regarding the implications of this coalition for the future of our nation. “First, the ADC alliance lacks the strength in mounting a credible challenge to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections. This alliance is a loose coalition of disparate political interests, with each member primarily focused on personal ambitions rather than a shared vision for the country. “This fragmentation raises profound doubts about the ADC’s capacity to effectively challenge the well-organized and disciplined machinery of the APC. The OPA believes that without a clear and unified agenda, the ADC is doomed to fail. “A prominent figure within the ADC, David Mark, exemplifies the opportunism that permeates this coalition. Having been denied the PDP presidential ticket, Mark’s subsequent decision to join the ADC is viewed as a self-serving maneuver, prioritizing his political aspirations over the collective needs of the Nigerian populace. “Such opportunism is not only divisive but also detrimental to the alliance's overall effectiveness. The OPA urges the Nigerian electorate to scrutinize the motivations of leaders like Mark, who seem more interested in personal gain than in the welfare of the nation. “The inclusion of Dele Momodu within the ADC raises additional concerns regarding the alliance's credibility. Momodu's previous electoral campaigns have yielded minimal success, with his failure to garner a single vote in past elections casting doubt on his ability to mobilize support. “His presence within the ADC is perceived as a liability, further undermining the alliance's standing among the Nigerian electorate. The OPA calls for a critical examination of the qualifications and track records of those who seek to lead us, as effective leadership is essential for the nation's progress. “Atiku Abubakar’s history of political party switching also warrants scrutiny. His transitions from the PDP to the Action Congress, back to the PDP, then to the APC, and now to the ADC, raise questions about his commitment to the development of Nigeria. This incessant party-hopping indicates a lack of loyalty and principle, qualities that are indispensable in a true leader. “The OPA posits that Atiku’s motivations appear to be rooted in a quest for power rather than a genuine dedication to the betterment of our nation. Such opportunistic behavior is not reflective of the leadership qualities necessary to inspire a nation in need of direction and integrity. “It is telling that Atiku's decision to join the ADC may have been influenced by personal rivalries, notably his relationship with Bola Tinubu and Nasir El-Rufai. This suggests that jealousy and ego play significant roles in political decisions, even at the highest levels. Such motivations further erode the credibility of the ADC and its ability to present a united front against the APC." “The OPA firmly believes that the lack of cohesion and clear goals within the ADC is evident in the actions of its members. Instead of collaborating towards a common agenda, each politician is pursuing their own ambitions without regard for the greater good. This absence of unity and direction will inevitably lead to the downfall of the alliance, significantly weakening its chances of success against the APC.” Kayode called on Nigerians to demand integrity, accountability, and nation-first leadership, warning that the country's future must not be entrusted to political figures with questionable motives. |

The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), has strongly condemned recent remarks made by former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, describing them as “reckless, inflammatory, and a veiled call to violence.” Amaechi had reportedly suggested that the only way to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from returning to power in 2027 was for Nigerians to “take their fate into their own hands.” He further alleged that fewer than 100,000 elites are plundering the country’s wealth while 200 million Nigerians continue to suffer, implying a potential uprising against the ruling class. In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Coordinator of GMI, Samaila Musa, described Amaechi’s comments as “deeply troubling,” warning that they pose a grave threat to the peace and stability of the country. The group also urged Nigerian citizens, especially the youth, to resist any calls to violence, stressing that meaningful change can only be achieved through peaceful means and civic engagement. Musa said: “Amaechi's rhetoric is alarming and reminiscent of dangerous historical precedents that have led to violence and bloodshed. By suggesting that citizens should engage in direct confrontation with the elite, he is essentially advocating for chaos and disorder. “The implication that Nigerians should emulate the actions of citizens in other countries, such as Bangladesh, Peru, or Chile, disregards the unique socio-political context of Nigeria. Our nation has a history of violence that must not be reignited by the careless words of a frustrated political figure who has held significant positions of power. “The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) firmly rebukes Amaechi's statement that revolutions cannot occur without bloodshed. This notion is not only misguided but also a direct invitation to violence. We must remind Amaechi of the responsibilities that come with his previous roles in government. “As a former minister, he had the opportunity to contribute to nation-building and social cohesion, yet he now chooses to incite division and discord. Such behavior is unbecoming of a leader and is detrimental to the progress of our society. “It is disheartening to witness a former leader, who has benefited from the very system he now criticizes, resort to inflammatory language. His comments reflect a profound misunderstanding of the power dynamics in Nigeria and a dangerous underestimation of the consequences of his words.” He urged Amaechi to reconsider his stance and engage in constructive dialogue rather than inciting violence among the populace. He added, “In light of these provocative statements, The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) calls upon the federal government to take immediate action against Amaechi. It is unacceptable for a former leader to incite the populace to violence and chaos. “His incitement to violence cannot be overlooked, and we believe that his arrest is necessary to prevent potential unrest. It is crucial for leaders to promote peace, unity, and constructive discourse, especially in a country that has faced numerous challenges in its quest for stability and progress. “Our strength lies not in conflict but in our ability to come together as a united front against corruption and misgovernance both of which Amaechi represents. Let us channel our frustrations into peaceful advocacy for change rather than succumbing to the dangerous allure of violence. The future of Nigeria depends on our collective ability to engage in dialogue and pursue justice through peaceful means. “The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) stands firmly against the incitement of violence and calls for responsible leadership. We demand that Rotimi Amaechi retract his statements and recognize the weight of his influence on the youth of Nigeria. It is time for all leaders to prioritize the well-being of our nation over personal ambitions and to foster an environment of peace and unity.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), on Monday, expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman, philanthropist, and business icon, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, CON, CONN, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Nigeria. In a statement by the forum's spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the NEF praised Dantata as a pillar of Nigeria’s anti-colonial struggle and a committed advocate for the nation’s independence, unity, and economic development. The forum noted that Dantata’s wisdom, compassion, and service impacted countless lives and significantly shaped Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape. He said: “The Northern Elders Forum received with deep sorrow and profound sense of loss the news of the passing of a towering figure in our nation's history, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, CON, CONN. “Alhaji Dantata was not only a highly respected elder statesman, philanthropist, and renowned entrepreneur; he was a pillar of Nigeria’s anti-colonial struggle and a steadfast advocate for the nation's independence. “His lifelong commitment to democratic ideals, economic empowerment, and the unity and progress of Northern Nigeria leaves behind a legacy that few can match. “His departure is a heartbreaking and monumental loss not just to Northern Nigeria but to the entire country. He was a beacon of wisdom, compassion, and service; a man whose life’s work positively impacted countless lives and helped shape the socio-political and economic landscape of our nation.” The Forum also extends it deepest condolences to his family, the people of Kano, and all Nigerians who mourn this great loss. He added, “We pray that the Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives his shortcomings, accepts his noble deeds, and grants him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN (Surely, we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return).” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Alhaji (Dr.) Aminu Alhassan Dantata, CFR, OFR, a towering figure in industry, philanthropy, and national development whose legacy spans generations and borders. Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who died on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the age of 94, was more than a business magnate; he was a symbol of integrity, vision, and compassion. In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described the late Dantata as a pioneer whose contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social development were both foundational and transformative. He said: “Through decades of pioneering investments in construction, banking, manufacturing, agriculture, oil and gas, and more, he laid the foundations for the economic growth of Northern Nigeria, creating thousands of jobs and fostering prosperity across the region. “Beyond business, his generosity and unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes touched countless lives. From supporting education, healthcare, and community infrastructure to championing peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony, Alhaji Dantata embodied the highest ideals of public service and philanthropy.” The CNG said that Nigeria has lost a towering statesman whose life was defined by service to humanity with humility, wisdom, and devotion to the collective good, and will remain a guiding light for generations. The Coalition extended its deepest condolences to the Dantata family, the government and people of Kano State, his friends, associates, and all Nigerians grieving this great loss. He added, “We pray Almighty Allah (SWT) grants him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus and gives his loved ones the strength to bear this grief.” The CNG calls on Nigerians to honour his legacy by promoting unity, hard work, and service to humanity, values Alhaji Dantata upheld throughout his extraordinary life, saying that, “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amin.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has expressed deep outrage over the brutal killing of more than 20 Nigerian soldiers in a terrorist ambush near Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, describing the attack as further evidence of a total collapse of security in Northern Nigeria. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, has been described by the Forum as not just an isolated attack but a clear declaration of war against the Nigerian state, one in which, according to NEF, “the state is steadily losing.” In a statement issued by NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, on Saturday, the Forum condemned the massacre in the strongest possible terms and declared that the North is “under siege” from terrorist groups who now operate with impunity across the region. He said: “More than 20 uniformed men, defenders of the nation, were slaughtered like animals by a gang of well-armed terrorists who launched a brazen, coordinated ambush that completely overwhelmed the base. This is not just an attack, it is a declaration of war against the Nigerian state, and the state is losing. “This barbaric assault is only the latest chapter in the ongoing bloodbath that has turned Northern Nigeria into a war zone throughout June 2025. From Benue to Plateau, from Kwara to Kaduna, and from Zamfara to Sokoto, Borno, and now Niger, what we are witnessing is not mere insecurity, it is an unrelenting campaign of terror, mass murder, and state failure. “Entire communities are being wiped out, homes torched, lives shattered, and still, the killers roam freely, unchallenged, and unpunished. “The truth is stark and undeniable: the Nigerian government has failed abysmally and consistently in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property. The North is drowning in blood, its people abandoned, while the security forces either cannot respond or are completely absent. “The Northern Elders Forum will no longer accept hollow condolences, tired speeches, or sterile press releases. Nigerians deserve visible, aggressive, and accountable action now. If the federal government continues to delay, deflect, or downplay this crisis, the Nigerian people will have no choice but to believe, rightly or wrongly, that this inaction is willful, or worse, complicit.” The forum demanded the immediate declaration of a State of Emergency on security across Northern Nigeria, adding that, “This must be followed by decisive, joint military, and intelligence operations with the sole objective of locating and eliminating every single terrorist and armed group threatening our people, regardless of who shelters them or where they operate. “The blood of Northern Nigerians is not cheap. Our soldiers are not cannon fodder. Our citizens will not continue to die silently while a complacent government watches from a distance. “The NEF warns in the clearest possible terms that the continued federal inaction will provoke open resistance. The patience of our people has run out. The legitimacy of any government that cannot or will not protect its citizens is gone. Enough is enough. We will not be silent. The North will not kneel before terror.” |
In a bid to deepen its grassroots football impact across Nigeria, AfriSportPro Limited, organisers of the AfriSportPro Youth League, has opened discussions with the Lagos State Football Association (Lagos FA) to include the state in the league’s inaugural season. The Founder and CEO of AfriSportPro Limited, Chukwuebuka Ugwu, during a visit to the Lagos FA board, chaired by Hajji Liameed Gafar, assured that more states will be incorporated as the league scales up after its inaugural season. Ugwu, who also serves as the Chairman of the AfriSportPro Youth League Advisory Board, explained that the AfriSportPro Youth League will commence with six pilot states, representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Currently, five states have been confirmed across different regions. Ugwu said: “Our visit to the Lagos FA was part of our engagement with the South West states to include one state in our first six pilot states. We believe Lagos is the biggest football hub in Nigeria and a model of football administration, so we identified the state as our first point of contact in the region to join our inaugural season. “We had tried to get this meeting since the beginning of the year and we finally got the meeting. It was a very productive meeting, during which we discussed the state of Nigerian football in general, as well as the problems our league aims to address in Nigerian football, particularly at the grassroots level. “The Lagos FA was happy and enthusiastic about our idea, and they believe Nigeria is ripe for our idea to be implemented. The Lagos FA has also shown interest in joining our league, pending further discussions with them. “We got a lot of great advice and encouragement from the FA, especially from the Chairman, Hajji Gafar.” According to him, while Lagos FA did not immediately endorse the league, the board showed keen interest and requested further dialogue before making a final decision. “We are also in discussion with other South West states. So, it will be a case of first come, first served for this inaugural season as we look to admit the first state to ready its structure for the league. As we expand, we will take in more states from all zones.” In his remarks, Gafar commended the AfriSportPro initiative, describing it as timely and relevant. Gafar said, “Thank you for embarking on a mission to improve Nigerian grassroots football. Your idea is a great initiative, and the Lagos State FA will vote to sanction the league in the state if the state FAs’ questions are clearly addressed in the next discussions.”

The Arewa Empowerment Coalition (AEC), has come out strongly against the proposed formation of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), reportedly being championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alongside prominent political figures such as Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Babachir Lawal. In a scathing statement issued on Tuesday by the AEC leader, Sulaiman Yusuf Sani, the coalition described the proposed alliance as a “misguided political misadventure” by “a cohort of disgruntled opportunists” attempting to hijack Nigeria’s democratic aspirations for personal gain. Sani said: “We view this coalition as a poorly calculated decision that reflects a profound misunderstanding of the current political landscape and the aspirations of the Nigerian people. Atiku Abubakar's attempt to forge this alliance is not only misguided but also indicative of a broader trend of political miscalculations that have plagued his career. “The AEC believes that this initiative will yield negative consequences and fail to achieve its intended outcomes, primarily due to the misjudgment of public sentiment, underestimation of the opposition, and a lack of foresight regarding the potential repercussions of their policies. “The Arewa Empowerment Coalition believes that the North would not be deceived by the antics of the Atiku-led coalition. The political arena in Nigeria is not merely a chessboard for the ambitions of a few; it is a complex tapestry woven from the hopes, dreams, and frustrations of millions. Atiku and his allies appear to have overlooked this fundamental truth. “By attempting to rally together a coalition of disillusioned politicians, they underestimate the resilience and intelligence of the Nigerian electorate, who are increasingly discerning and demand authentic leadership rather than opportunistic alliances. “Moreover, the AEC contends that the ADA is a desperate maneuver by individuals who, having failed to connect with the grassroots, now seek to cling to power through alliances that lack genuine substance. “The political careers of figures like Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Babachir Lawal are marred by controversies and a legacy of governance that has left much to be desired. Their inclusion in this coalition only serves to diminish its credibility and further alienate the very citizens they claim to represent. “Atiku Abubakar's political calculations appear to stem from a fundamental failure to accurately assess the shifting dynamics of Nigerian politics. His reliance on established but discredited figures signals a lack of innovation and a disregard for the evolving needs of the populace. The AEC believes that true leadership requires not only an understanding of current political realities but also a vision that prioritizes the long-term well-being of the public over personal ambition. “The repercussions of these missteps extend far beyond the realm of political strategy; they threaten the fabric of our society. When political leaders prioritize their interests over the needs of their constituents, they risk sowing discord and disillusionment among the very communities they seek to serve.” The AEC therefore urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist political arrangements that are not built on substance or the common good. He added, “The Arewa Empowerment Coalition categorically rejects the proposed All Democratic Alliance as a misguided and poorly conceived initiative that fails to resonate with the aspirations of the Nigerian people. “We urge Atiku Abubakar and his allies to reconsider their approach and engage in genuine dialogue with the electorate, prioritizing the needs of the people over political expediency. The future of our nation depends on leaders who are willing to listen, learn, and lead with integrity.” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep grief and outrage over the gruesome killing of innocent travellers in Plateau State, describing the June 20 attack as a barbaric, cold-blooded assault that underscores the persistent threat to peaceful coexistence in Nigeria. According to the group, 31 individuals, including women and children, were travelling from Zaria to Kwa in Quan Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State to attend a wedding when they were ambushed by armed assailants. In a statement signed by Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, National Coordinator of the CNG, the coalition disclosed that eight victims, including a 10-year-old child, were killed and burned inside the bus, which was reportedly owned by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. He said: “Eighteen others are currently receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries at Mangu General Hospital. Four remain missing, unaccounted for, leaving their families in anguish and uncertainty. “According to eyewitness accounts and available reports, the only “crime” these victims committed was being Hausa and Muslim. This targeted attack is not an isolated case, but a continuation of a deeply troubling trend of ethnically and religiously motivated violence in Plateau State spanning nearly two decades. “We painfully recall: The burning alive of Ningi travellers during the Dariye administration. The still unresolved murder of General Idris Alkali, under the Jang administration. The killing of Muslim pilgrims from Ondo State returning from Bauchi during the Lalong administration. “These and many other unreported atrocities stand as painful reminders of a disturbing culture of impunity that has festered for far too long. “The CNG finds it unacceptable that: Such heinous crimes continue with little to no accountability. Victims are repeatedly profiled, targeted, and eliminated simply for their ethnic and religious identity. The Plateau State Government and security agencies have failed to decisively address this dangerous trend.” To this end, the CNG made the following demands, “The Plateau State Government and Federal Authorities to immediately launch a transparent, thorough investigation. The Nigerian Police Force, DSS, and Military to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators without delay. “Community leaders, religious figures, and civil society actors to publicly denounce this violence and work toward rebuilding genuine peace. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate and document these crimes for appropriate redress and global accountability. “The Coalition of Northern Groups declares: Enough is enough. We will no longer remain silent while innocent Northerners are hunted, murdered, and burned in broad daylight for no other reason than who they are. “Plateau State, which prides itself as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” must confront its demons and reclaim its lost identity not through slogans, but through action. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We pray for the healing of the wounded and the safe return of the missing. But above all, we demand justice, accountability, and concrete change not tomorrow, but now.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has condemned in the strongest terms the brutal massacre of innocent Nigerian travellers in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, calling the atrocity a chilling reflection of the country’s deepening security crisis and failure of leadership. In a statement issued on Tuesday by NEF’s spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the group said it was “shaken to its core” by the premeditated slaughter of 18 citizens, including women and children, who were ambushed, hacked to death, and set ablaze while en route to a wedding in Quan-Pan, Plateau State. Jiddere said: “This premeditated atrocity is not only a crime against humanity but a stark indictment of a nation losing its grip on the most basic duty of governance, the protection of human life.” According to credible reports, the victims, ordinary citizens, including women and children hailed from Basawa, Sabon Gari Local Government Area in Kaduna State were on their way to a wedding in Quan-Pan, Plateau State, aboard a clearly marked official vehicle of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. After losing their way, they sought help in Mangu, only to be met with savagery. Jiddere added, “They were ambushed, hacked down, and burned alive in what can only be described as a merciless, calculated act of terror. Of the eighteen aboard, only two survived, rescued by the courage of a single local resident. “Let us be clear: this was not a case of mistaken identity. It was not random. It was an act of evil. In any functioning society, a marked official vehicle carrying unarmed civilians, particularly women and children, would be seen as sacrosanct. That such a group could be slaughtered in cold blood speaks volumes about the depths of hate, lawlessness, and moral decay festering in parts of our nation. “This tragedy is part of a much darker narrative, one where the Northern region of Nigeria is bleeding daily from unchecked violence. In the North West, villages are emptied and lives stolen through mass abductions and killings. “In the North East, terror persists. In the North Central, random killings and kidnappings have become routine. What was once sporadic unrest has mutated into systemic terror, thriving under the shadow of impunity and governmental inertia. “The Northern Elders Forum categorically rejects silence, tokenism, or bureaucratic lip service. This is not the time for vague promises. It is the time for uncompromising, sustained action.” The Forum rejected what it called "silence, tokenism, and bureaucratic lip service" in response to the tragedy, insisting that only uncompromising action could stem the tide of violence. The NEF made the following demands: “Immediate arrest, public prosecution, and uncompromising punishment of all those responsible for the Mangu massacre. Justice must be swift and public. “Accountability from the Plateau State Government and all relevant security agencies, including restitution to the victims’ families and to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. “A federal security overhaul, not symbolic redeployments, but a real, strategic, and well-funded campaign to reclaim the North from bandits, terrorists, and killers. Massive deployment of trained security personnel and intelligence assets to violence-ridden regions across Northern Nigeria. “Clear timelines, measurable outcomes, and public accountability from the Federal Government. Enough with empty reassurances. The North is tired of burying its dead. “This country is bleeding, and it is bleeding from the North. The obligation to protect life and restore order is not a favour the government grants, it is a constitutional imperative. Failure to act now is not just negligence. It is complicated. “To the grieving families, the people of Giwa LGA, and the Ahmadu Bello University community, NEF extends its deepest condolences. We grieve with you. We rage with you. And we stand with every Nigerian regardless of ethnicity, faith, or region, who has suffered because those in power have failed to keep them safe. “This moment demands courage. It demands honesty. Above all, it demands action. Enough is enough.” |
The Oduwa People's Assembly (OPA) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians over the emergence of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), a new political coalition reportedly spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. While the formation of new political alliances is a normal aspect of our democratic process, the OPA believes that the ADA, as currently constituted, poses a significant threat to the integrity and future of our nation. In a statement by the group’s leader, Rechard Oltunji Kayode, expressed grave concern over the composition of the coalition, alleging that its leadership is made up of individuals whose records in public service have been tainted by allegations of corruption, poor governance, and self-interest. Kayode said: “The leadership of the ADA is comprised of individuals who have long been associated with political opportunism, a trait that has severely undermined the trust of the Nigerian people in their leadership. “Key figures such as Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, among others, have been discredited through their actions and policies during their tenures in office. Their records reveal a troubling pattern of governance characterized by self-interest, corruption, and a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian populace. “Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, is emblematic of the kind of leadership that has brought our nation to its knees. His administration was marked by controversial policies and a lack of transparency, which left many citizens questioning his commitment to democratic principles. “His involvement in the ADA raises serious concerns about the coalition’s intentions, as he has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to prioritize political gain over the needs of the people he was elected to serve. “Similarly, Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, has a history of political maneuvering that has often favored his personal ambitions rather than the collective good. His leadership style has been criticized for fostering division and conflict rather than unity and progress. “The OPA believes that the inclusion of such figures in the ADA is indicative of a coalition that is more interested in consolidating power than in addressing the pressing issues facing our nation. “The desperation exhibited by the leadership of the ADA is palpable. In a bid to regain relevance and influence, these political opportunists are attempting to repackage themselves under a new banner, hoping that the electorate will forget their past misdeeds. “However, the Nigerian people are not easily fooled. The electorate is increasingly aware of the need for genuine leadership that prioritizes accountability, integrity, and the common good." He urged Nigerians to resist being “swayed by the superficial allure” of the coalition and instead demand genuine leadership anchored on accountability, integrity, and national development. He added, “The OPA urges all Nigerians to remain vigilant and critically assess the motives behind the formation of the All Democratic Alliance. This coalition should not be viewed as a beacon of hope for our democracy but rather as a continuation of the same old political games that have plagued our nation for decades. “The ADA’s leadership is not equipped to offer the transformative change that Nigeria desperately needs; instead, it represents a regression to the very practices that have stifled our progress. “It is our duty to demand better from our leaders. We must hold them accountable for their past actions and challenge the narratives that seek to mislead us. The Oduwa People's Assembly calls upon all Nigerians to be discerning in their political choices and to support movements and individuals who demonstrate a true commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and national development. “The Oduwa People's Assembly stands firm in its warning against the All Democratic Alliance. Let us not be swayed by the superficial allure of a new political coalition led by discredited figures. Instead, let us strive for a future where our leaders are genuinely invested in the welfare of our nation and its people.” |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has expressed strong opposition to the recent application for the registration of a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and key political allies. The group called on citizens, civil society, and reform-minded political actors to resist attempts to manipulate public trust and to work together to build a more united, transparent, and people-focused political system. In a statement issued Monday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, the pro-democracy group warned that the formation of the ADA threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process and risks deepening existing divisions within the country’s political landscape. Ahmed said: “We express our deep concern over this development, which we believe undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process and threatens the political atmosphere that is already fraught with challenges. “The formation of the All Democratic Alliance is not merely a benign attempt to broaden the political spectrum; rather, it is an endeavor that is likely to sow further discord and division among the Nigerian populace. “The DWI asserts that this initiative, driven by a coalition that has previously failed to deliver on its promises to the Nigerian people, is doomed to fail. We call upon all Nigerians to reject this party and its misguided objectives. “The Atiku-led coalition has a track record that is marred by disillusionment and unmet expectations. Many Nigerians are still grappling with the consequences of past political decisions made by its leaders, which have often prioritized personal ambition over the welfare of the citizenry. The establishment of the ADA appears to be a strategic move aimed at consolidating power rather than addressing the pressing issues that plague our nation. “The political landscape in Nigeria has been characterized by a proliferation of parties that often lack a clear ideological foundation or a commitment to the democratic ideals that the DWI champions. The ADA is poised to add to this cacophony of voices, diluting the potency of genuine political discourse and creating further fragmentation in an already divided electorate. “The Atiku-led coalition is fundamentally undermined by the questionable credibility of its core members and leaders. Atiku Abubakar himself is beset by longstanding allegations of corruption, raising concerns about his motivations and integrity in seeking to govern Nigeria. “Similarly, Nasir El-Rufai's tenure as Governor of Kaduna State has been marred by moral controversies that cast doubt on his ethical standing. Furthermore, both Rotimi Amaechi and Babachir Lawal grapple with significant credibility issues, with accusations of corruption that further erode public trust. “Collectively, these factors not only diminish the coalition's appeal but also reflect a broader challenge within Nigerian politics, where the intertwining of power and ethical lapses often leads to disillusionment among the electorate. “The coalition's ability to present a united and credible front is thus severely compromised, raising critical questions about its capacity to address the pressing issues facing Nigeria and to inspire confidence in its leadership. “The Democracy Watch Initiative believes that Nigeria needs political entities that are genuinely committed to the principles of democracy, accountability, and social justice. The establishment of yet another political party, particularly one that lacks a clear agenda for national development, only serves to distract from the urgent need for unity and purposeful governance. “The organization called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and discerning in their political choices, urging the electorate to focus on leaders and platforms that embody transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to national progress.” We urge Nigerians to focus on parties and candidates that demonstrate a clear commitment to addressing the critical issues facing our nation, such as poverty alleviation, education reform, healthcare access, and security. He added, “The ADA, as proposed by the Atiku-led coalition, fails to present such a vision and instead risks perpetuating the cycle of political patronage and disillusionment that has plagued our democracy. “As citizens of this great nation, we must remain vigilant and discerning in our political choices. The Democracy Watch Initiative calls on all Nigerians to reject the All Democratic Alliance and any political maneuvering that seeks to exploit our democratic processes for personal or factional gain. “We must embrace a political culture that prioritizes the collective good over individual ambitions. It is imperative that we support movements and parties that are rooted in transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the democratic ideals that underpin our society. “In conclusion, the Democracy Watch Initiative stands resolute in its condemnation of the All Democratic Alliance and the Atiku-led coalition’s attempt to introduce yet another political party into our already complex political landscape. “We implore all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to true democratic values and to actively participate in shaping a future that reflects the aspirations of all citizens. Together, let us reject division and work towards a more united, prosperous Nigeria.” |
The North West Solidarity Forum (NWSF), has lauded His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, for organising the most successful Hajj exercise in the state’s history, setting a new benchmark in pilgrim welfare and inclusive spiritual leadership. Pilgrims and Observers have confirmed that Governor Yusuf ensured seamless logistics for Kano’s record-breaking contingent of pilgrims, the largest nationwide, which is unprecedented. In a statement, the Executive Director of NWSF, Comrade Abubakar Sani, said that Kano pilgrims had enjoyed dignified accommodation, nutritious meals, and comprehensive support throughout their spiritual journey in the Holy Land. The Forum particularly applauds the Governor’s magnanimity in sponsoring numerous less-privileged citizens to perform Hajj, affirming his commitment to inclusive religious opportunity. “The 2025 Hajj exercise under Governor Yusuf’s leadership has rewritten Kano’s history. His hands-on approach guaranteed every pilgrim dignity and comfort, while his generosity uplifted the vulnerable. This is servant-leadership in action.” The NWSF further praised the Governor’s transformative development agenda across Kano State as massive investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare have visibly elevated living standards and fueled public optimism. He added, “This grassroots impact has been demonstrated in the heroic reception Governor Yusuf received upon returning from Saudi Arabia, a spontaneous outpouring of public affection rooted in his deep connection with the people. “Thousands thronged the streets to welcome Governor Yusuf home – a testament to the trust he has earned through tangible governance. From the groundbreaking 'Giant of Development' projects to his Hajj triumph, he consistently prioritizes the people’s welfare." The Forum urged Governor Yusuf to sustain this exceptional standard of excellence as manifested in all facets of Kano’s development. "We challenge His Excellency to keep raising the bar. Kano’s progress under his stewardship inspires the entire North West region," Sani emphasized. The NWSF advocates that other governors in the subregion should emulate the execution of equitable development, good governance, and social justice from Kano as they strive to move their states to a higher pedestal of development. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep sorrow over the recent wave of killings in Benue State, describing the attacks as senseless and unacceptable. The group lamented the loss of innocent lives and the displacement of countless residents, calling for immediate and decisive action from all levels of government. In a statement issued by the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the pan-northern group strongly condemned the violence, which it said continues to destabilize communities and disrupt peaceful coexistence. He said: “We are deeply saddened by the recent killings in Benue State, which have resulted in the tragic loss of numerous innocent lives and the displacement of many more. We strongly condemn these senseless acts of violence and call on all governments, security agencies, and communities to join hands to address this perennial crisis. “The CNG is particularly disturbed by the alleged involvement of some politicians in exploiting the crisis for their selfish interests to the detriment of the overall interest of society.” He called on the Federal Government, Benue State Government, and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to put an end to the killings and ensure the protection of all citizens. In addition to demanding justice, the coalition appealed for humanitarian support for affected families, adding that “Governments should also investigate and prosecute those responsible for the violence, regardless of their social status or political affiliation, to serve as a deterrent to would-be criminal elements. “The pan-northern Nigerian group condoles with the families that have lost their loved ones in the tragedy and prays to the Almighty God to repose the souls of the departed. We equally pray for those that had been injured to recuperate fully and expeditiously to return to their normal life endeavours.” The CNG calls on the authorities to provide adequate support and relief materials to the victims and their families to alleviate their painful situation. The CNG further urges community leaders and traditional rulers to promote peace and understanding among their people by encouraging dialogue and reconciliation between conflicting or aggrieved groups. The CNG believes that the solution to this crisis lies in collective action and a commitment to valuing human life and dignity. We must work together to build a society where differences are resolved peacefully and where the rights and safety of all citizens are respected. |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has strongly condemned the persistent wave of killings and violence engulfing Benue State, describing the situation as a “genocide” and a direct consequence of government inaction, political complicity, and systemic collapse. In a statement issued by Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, spokesperson of the NEF, the Forum decried the alarming scale of human loss and suffering across Benue, warning that the state, once a pillar of agricultural productivity and economic stability, is now descending into lawlessness and despair. He said: “The situation has degenerated into unrestrained bloodshed and lawlessness, turning communities into killing fields and exposing the utter collapse of governance, accountability, and security. Benue State, one of Nigeria’s critical agricultural hubs, plays a vital role in national food production, youth and women employment, and economic stability. Today, this once-thriving state is under siege. “The lives of its innocent citizens are being violently cut short, and its socio-economic structure is being systematically destroyed, while the government stands by in silence, helplessness, or worse, complicity. “The NEF is outraged by the continued massacres. In just recent days, over 150 people were slaughtered in the Yelwata community. In Guma and Logo local government areas, another 200 lives were wiped out. Thousands have been displaced into squalid, unsafe IDP camps with no access to healthcare, clean water, or basic necessities. Medical services are overstretched and collapsing. Women, children, and the elderly are dying in silence while the government looks away. “Let it be clearly stated: this is not an ethnic conflict, as it is deceptively portrayed. It is an internal political crisis, one that has been allowed to fester due to criminal negligence, partisan interests, and a complete failure of leadership. “The deliberate attempt to reframe this politically driven violence as an ethnic or communal issue is dishonest, irresponsible, and dangerous. It deflects from the truth and emboldens those behind these atrocities. “The government's refusal to act, speak, or even acknowledge the scale of the crisis is a betrayal of its core constitutional responsibility. It has failed in its primary duty to protect the lives and property of its citizens. What we are witnessing is not just failure but deliberate inaction, a culture of impunity, and an alarming collapse of national integrity.” The Forum warned that mischaracterizing the killings risks emboldening perpetrators, distracting from the truth, and fueling further instability. NEF lists immediate demands and calling for urgent and decisive action, the Forum issued a set of immediate demands: The forum demanded: “Immediate and total deployment of elite, properly equipped security forces to Benue State to end the killings and restore peace and order. Enough of the half-measures and empty rhetoric. “A full-scale, independent investigation into the political and economic interests fueling the violence and the systemic cover-ups being perpetuated by criminal actors should be undertaken. Swift arrest and public prosecution of all perpetrators, including any officials found complicit by action or omission. No one must be above the law. “Comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation for victims, bereaved families, and displaced communities should be adequately provided. “A national security overhaul that confronts the truth, embraces transparency, and includes all regional stakeholders in the search for sustainable peace." The NEF stands in unshakable solidarity with the people of Benue and all crisis-hit communities in Northern Nigeria. These killings were preventable. The destruction we are seeing today is the direct consequence of government indifference, incompetence, and dereliction of its core responsibilities. Enough is enough. “If the government continues on this path of silence and denial, it will have declared itself an enemy of justice, unity, and the people it was elected to serve." He added. |
As we commemorate June 12, a day etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history as a symbol of democracy, the Oduduwa Frontiers stands proud in joining fellow Nigerians in celebrating the strides our nation has made under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They also praised the administration’s infrastructure drive, which includes large-scale investments in roads, railways, and power projects. In a statement issued by its National President, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem, the group described Democracy Day as not only a remembrance of Nigeria’s democratic rebirth but also a moment to reflect on the country’s progress in economic reform, security enhancement, and national stability over the past two years. Kazeem noted that despite numerous challenges, the Tinubu administration has shown firm resolve in implementing bold economic reforms to reposition the nation for sustainable growth. He said: “This day not only marks the significance of our democratic journey but also offers an opportunity to reflect on the transformative progress achieved in the past two years in economic reform, security advancement, and overall stability. “In the face of numerous challenges, the Tinubu administration has embarked on a series of ambitious economic reforms aimed at revitalizing our economy and fostering sustainable growth. The introduction of the economic diversification strategy has been pivotal in reducing Nigeria's over-reliance on oil revenues. “The administration's commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting technology-driven enterprises, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has led to increased job creation and economic resilience. “Furthermore, the government's focus on infrastructural development, particularly in transportation and energy, has laid a solid foundation for future growth. The ongoing construction of new roads, railways, and power plants is not merely an investment in infrastructure but a commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to the resources necessary for a dignified life. “The partnership between the public and private sectors has been instrumental in attracting foreign investment, showcasing Nigeria as an emerging market with vast potential. “The safety and security of our citizens remain paramount in the pursuit of national development. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of security challenges, President Tinubu's administration has taken a holistic approach to enhancing national security. “Through strategic partnerships with local communities, the establishment of new security frameworks, and the reinforcement of our military capabilities, the government has made significant strides in combating insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence." The Oduduwa Frontiers emphasized that stability is the cornerstone of democratic progress, and credited President Tinubu’s leadership for promoting inclusivity, fostering dialogue, and strengthening democratic institutions. He added, “The introduction of community policing initiatives has empowered local populations to take an active role in ensuring their safety, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. As a result, we have witnessed a tangible reduction in crime rates in several regions, allowing citizens to go about their daily lives with greater confidence and peace of mind. The administration’s unwavering commitment to securing our borders has also played a crucial role in curbing illegal activities and enhancing national stability. “Stability is the bedrock of any thriving democracy, and under President Tinubu's leadership, Nigeria has experienced a renewed sense of political and social stability. The administration's commitment to inclusivity and dialogue has fostered an environment where diverse voices are heard and respected. This has been particularly evident in the management of regional grievances and the promotion of national unity. “Moreover, the government's efforts to strengthen democratic institutions have reinforced the rule of law and accountability. The ongoing judicial reforms aim to ensure that justice is accessible to all, thereby enhancing public trust in our legal system. As we celebrate this Democracy Day, it is imperative to recognize that the progress we have made is a collective effort, requiring the participation of every Nigerian to uphold the values of democracy. “As we reflect on the achievements of the past two years, the Oduduwa Frontiers calls upon all Nigerians to remain steadfast in our commitment to democracy, progress, and unity. The journey towards a prosperous Nigeria is ongoing, and it is our collective responsibility to support the administration in its efforts to build a nation where every citizen can thrive. “On this June 12, let us celebrate not only our democratic heritage but also the promise of a brighter future under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Together, we can continue to forge a path towards a Nigeria that is economically robust, secure, and stable, a nation that truly embodies the aspirations of its people.” |
Amid growing calls for nationwide protests, the South-South Youth Amalgamation, has issued a passionate appeal to Nigerians, especially the youth, to reject any planned demonstrations that could threaten national unity and public peace. The group expressed deep concern over the rising calls for protests in different parts of the country, warning that such actions, if mismanaged or hijacked, could further fracture Nigeria’s delicate socio-political landscape. In a statement signed by its Convener, John Albert Clarkson, the group expressed concern over what it described as “a dangerous trend of inflammatory propaganda and ethnic manipulation” fueling unrest across the country. Clarkson said: “To the esteemed citizens of Nigeria, the media, and all stakeholders in our collective pursuit of peace and progress. It is with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency that we the South-South Youth Amalgamation address the planned protests in Nigeria, which have the potential to exacerbate the already fragile state of our social fabric. “Over the years, we have witnessed a troubling trend: individuals and groups, both within and outside Nigeria, have sought to create discord among our people through inflammatory propaganda. “This divisive rhetoric aims to pit one ethnic group against another, undermining the very essence of our national unity. The recent history of protests in Nigeria serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such divisive tactics. “The #EndSARS protests that began in October 2020 were a legitimate expression of the youth's frustration with police brutality, specifically the actions of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Young men and women across the southern part of Nigeria gathered in solidarity, demanding accountability and reforms. “However, what began as a peaceful movement was tragically hijacked by those with ulterior motives, leading to a series of violent incidents that marred the original intent of the protests.” The group urged young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of destabilization. He added, “We must remember the chaos that ensued: the looting, the killings, and the near breakdown of law and order. The narrative shifted dramatically as misinformation spread, particularly concerning the tragic events at Lekki Toll Gate. Unverified claims of a massacre were propagated, leading not only to domestic unrest but also to international condemnation based on falsehoods. “This manipulation of public sentiment was further exploited by groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which incited violence and targeted individuals of northern Nigerian descent, resulting in heinous acts of violence and destruction. “As we reflect on these events, we must be clear: while the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in both Nigerian and international law, it does not extend to violence and destruction. Our democracy cannot thrive when citizens are threatened by internal or external aggression. Protests, when conducted peacefully, are a fundamental right; however, violence masquerading as protest is a crime that must not be tolerated. “We implore all Nigerians to recognize the critical importance of maintaining peace and order in our society. The provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and other international conventions emphasize the necessity of restricting violent assemblies to protect the rights of all citizens, ensure national security, and uphold public safety. “We urge all stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, and the media, to promote dialogue and understanding rather than division. Let us work together to address the legitimate grievances of our people through peaceful means and constructive engagement.” They also called on all Nigerians to reject violence and embrace unity, saying that, “The South-South Youth Amalgamation stands firmly against any planned protests that threaten to destabilize our nation. We encourage our fellow citizens to engage in peaceful discourse and seek solutions that uphold the dignity and rights of every Nigerian, irrespective of their ethnic background.” |
A group, the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), on Tuesday, condemned the planned protests by what it described as “faceless groups,” calling them unfounded, unreasonable, and counterproductive to the progress Nigeria is currently experiencing under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against efforts to destabilize the nation, warning that these so-called protests could derail ongoing initiatives aimed at economic growth, national security, and social welfare. In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, the group emphasized that the protests are ill-timed and lack legitimate justification, especially at a moment when the nation is witnessing steady progress across critical sectors. He stressed that Nigeria’s challenges are complex and multifaceted, requiring dialogue, cooperation, and collective action, not leaderless protests with no clear solutions. Bamidele said: “In light of the recent announcements regarding protests being planned by certain faceless groups, the Democracy Watch Initiative feels compelled to voice our strong opposition to these actions, which we deem unfounded, unreasonable, and ultimately counterproductive. “These planned protests come at a time when our nation is witnessing a remarkable trajectory of progress under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His administration has made significant strides in addressing the multifaceted challenges that have historically plagued our country. “From economic reforms aimed at revitalizing our markets to infrastructural developments that promise to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, the current administration is diligently working towards a brighter future for Nigeria. “It is disheartening to observe that amidst this backdrop of hope and progress, certain unscrupulous political opportunists are attempting to exploit the discontent of a few for their own gain. “These groups, often shrouded in anonymity, have failed to articulate any constructive grievances and instead resort to sowing seeds of discord and division. Their motivations are not rooted in the genuine aspirations of the populace but rather in a desperate bid to regain power and influence that they have long lost.” The Democracy Watch Initiative called on all stakeholders, political leaders, civil society, and everyday citizens, to prioritize unity and constructive engagement over divisive rhetoric and actions. He added, “They distract from the important work being done to build a more prosperous and equitable society. Instead of rallying behind initiatives that could lead to meaningful change, these protests threaten to derail progress and foster an environment of instability. “Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that the problems facing our nation are complex and multifaceted. They cannot be solved through protests that lack a clear agenda or constructive solutions. “The challenges we face require collaboration, dialogue, and a commitment to working together as a united front. The actions of these faceless groups, therefore, are not just misguided; they are detrimental to the very fabric of our democracy. “As citizens of this great nation, we must remain vigilant against the machinations of those who seek to exploit our frustrations for their own selfish ends. We must resist the temptation to be swayed by their rhetoric and instead focus on the progress we are making together. “The Democracy Watch Initiative calls upon all Nigerians to reject these unfounded protests and to stand in solidarity with the efforts of the Tinubu administration as it strives to create a better future for all. “We urge all stakeholders, political leaders, civil society organizations, and everyday citizens, to prioritize constructive dialogue and collaboration over divisive actions. Let us work together to build a Nigeria that reflects our collective aspirations for peace, prosperity, and progress. The future is bright, and together, we can achieve greatness.” |
The Oduwa People's Assembly has accused Amnesty International of biased reporting on Nigeria, particularly regarding the killings in Benue and Plateau states. The group also raised concerns about Amnesty's selective reporting, citing the organization's apparent oversight of violence in the South-East and mass killings attributed to separatist groups. In a statement, the group's leader, Rechard Oltunji Kayode, alleged that Amnesty International's reports lack credible data and are influenced by Western funding, which may compromise their objectivity. He said: “In light of the recent claims made by Amnesty International regarding reactions to their reports on the killings in Benue and Plateau, the Oduwa People's Assembly OPA finds it necessary to address the assertions that their findings are based on credible data, as well as the unfounded allegations that individuals are being paid to discredit their narratives. “The Oduwa People's Assembly contends that Amnesty International, rather than being the victim, is culpable in its reporting on killings in Nigeria. This assertion raises critical questions about the integrity of human rights organizations and their role in shaping narratives that may influence public perception and policy decisions. “Amnesty International's assertion that certain individuals are compensated to undermine its data lacks substantiation. Notably, the organization has not clarified the origins of its statistics, whether they are derived from the Nigerian police, the Directorate of State Security, the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, or military sources. “Furthermore, there are concerns regarding Amnesty's adherence to its foundational principles, as it is perceived to have shifted its focus over time. The funding of such organizations, mainly from Western sources may influence their agenda, particularly in targeting nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America deemed unfriendly, thereby raising questions about the objectivity of their reporting. “The Oduwa People's Assembly raises pertinent concerns regarding Amnesty International's selective reporting on Nigeria, particularly its apparent oversight of violence in the South-East. Notably, the mass killings attributed to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) remain largely unaddressed. “Additionally, the organization has not reported on the tragic deaths of 240 security personnel at the hands of these separatist groups. Such omissions could imply a biased narrative that undermines the complexities of Nigeria's socio-political environment, prompting questions about the motivations behind Amnesty's reporting practices and their impact on public perception.” The Oduwa People's Assembly recalls that Amnesty International played a complicit role in disseminating unverified allegations regarding the Nigerian military's involvement in mass grave excavations following the Tudun Biri incident. This assertion raises critical concerns about the integrity of human rights reporting and the potential ramifications of spreading unsubstantiated claims. “History is a powerful teacher, and we must not allow it to be distorted for ulterior motives. The Oduwa People's Assembly is acutely aware of the patterns that have emerged in global west politics, particularly concerning the destabilization of economically prospective countries of the global north. “These tragic events were facilitated by international human rights groups in the guise of upholding transparency and human rights, yet whose actions have contributed to chaos and suffering in these regions. It is with this historical context that we approach the claims made by Amnesty International. “We are aware that Amnesty International's advocacy reflects particular ideological stances, particularly in its reporting on conflicts such as the Gaza-Israel situation. Scholars like Norman Finkelstein have contended that Amnesty’s reports disproportionately emphasize the actions of Palestinian groups while downplaying the Israeli military's conduct, raising questions about the objectivity of its legal analyses. “Recent allegations of war crimes in Ukraine have ignited a storm of backlash, prompting accusations of bias and ideological partiality in its reporting. Amnesty's focus on specific narratives often overlooks significant human rights violations in other contexts, thereby undermining its credibility. Furthermore, the organization's associations with entities possessing questionable human rights records have compounded concerns regarding its integrity.” The Oduwa People's Assembly called on Nigerians to unite in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration and reject external manipulation and interference. He added, “We believe that the current efforts of Amnesty International in Nigeria are not merely an innocent pursuit of justice but rather a calculated strategy aimed at undermining the credibility of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “It is evident that these actions seek to exploit Nigeria's religious and ethnic fault lines to foster division and ultimately destabilize our great nation. The timing of these reports coincides with a significant shift in President Tinubu’s relationships with Western powers, raising concerns about the motivations behind Amnesty International’s narrative. “The Oduwa People's Assembly is prepared to expose the antics of Amnesty International and to vehemently resist any attempts to tarnish the integrity of President Tinubu's administration. We stand firm in our belief that the sovereignty of Nigeria must be protected against external manipulation and interference. Our commitment to the truth is unwavering, and we will not allow misinformation to dictate the narrative surrounding our nation’s progress. “It is important to highlight the successes recorded by the Tinubu administration in ensuring improved security across various regions of Nigeria, including the Northwest, North-East, North-Central, and beyond. Under President Tinubu's leadership, significant strides have been made in combating insecurity, restoring peace, and fostering stability. The administration’s proactive measures have led to a noticeable decline in violent incidents and have bolstered the confidence of citizens in the government’s ability to protect them. “As leaders of the Oduwa People's Assembly, we call upon all Nigerians to unite in support of a government that is committed to the welfare and security of its people. Together, we will stand against any entity that seeks to undermine our progress and sow discord among our diverse communities. “The Oduwa People's Assembly reaffirms its solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration. We will not be swayed by misleading narratives or external pressures nor by the antics of collaborators paid to use the media to make statements that could destabilize their country. Our resolve to protect Nigeria’s integrity and promote peace and unity remains steadfast.” |

The grand finale was made even more memorable by a performance from the Nigeria Police Band, FCT Command, who entertained the crowd and provided top-tier security throughout the event. The FCT PTA Games 2025 has now set a high benchmark for future editions, reinforcing the belief that sports can be a strong pillar for unity, health, and educational development.

The South-South Youth Amalgamation (SSYA), has strongly condemned the recent reports released by Amnesty International (AI) on Nigeria’s security situation, describing them as biased, misleading, and a threat to national sovereignty. The group further accused Amnesty International of frequently overstepping its human rights mandate and operating as a political tool rather than as an impartial observer. In a statement issued by its Convener, John Albert Clarkson, the group accused Amnesty International of repeating a pattern of selective reporting aimed at undermining Nigerian leadership, just as it allegedly did during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He said: “We find these reports not only misleading but also a deliberate attempt to undermine the sovereignty of our nation in the same manner they discredited the leadership of our former President, Goodluck Jonathan. “It is imperative to highlight the role that AI has played in shaping public perception against President Jonathan during his tenure and beyond, ultimately contributing to his rejection by the Nigerian populace in 2024. “Amnesty International has a history of overstepping its mandate, often acting as a political tool rather than an impartial human rights organization. The recent reports on Nigeria are no exception. They paint a picture of chaos and ineptitude in our security forces without acknowledging the complex realities on the ground. “This selective reporting has historically been used to vilify leaders who prioritize national integrity over foreign interests. In the case of President Jonathan, AI's relentless criticism during his administration served to delegitimize his efforts to stabilize the nation, particularly in the face of insurgency and regional instability. As a result, his leadership was unjustly cast in a negative light, contributing to a narrative that ultimately led to his electoral defeat. “Today, as Nigeria witnesses a resurgence in political stability and economic growth, it is clear that President Jonathan's policies were more effective than AI would have the world believe. The South-South Youth Amalgamation recognizes that the former President's commitment to peace and development has been vindicated, as Nigeria emerges stronger and more united. It is essential to acknowledge the progress made under his leadership, which AI chose to ignore in favor of sensationalism and bias. “The pattern of backlash against Amnesty International is not unique to Nigeria. Across the globe, governments have expelled or restricted AI's operations, perceiving its actions as provocative and an infringement on internal affairs. In Russia, AI's Moscow office was shut down under accusations of undermining national stability. “Similarly, in India, the government froze AI India's accounts, claiming the organization promoted an "anti-India agenda." These instances illustrate a growing recognition among nations that AI's reports often serve as instruments of foreign interference rather than objective assessments of human rights conditions. “In Turkey, the arrest of AI Turkey’s director and staff highlighted the perception that AI was engaging in political activism rather than neutral human rights monitoring. The Turkish government accused AI of collusion with terrorist organizations, a charge that reflects the broader narrative of governments resisting external meddling in their internal affairs. “The same accusations were echoed in Venezuela, where the government expelled AI for documenting human rights abuses, labeling the organization as part of a foreign interventionist agenda.” The South-South Youth Amalgamation urged Amnesty International to adopt a more balanced and context-aware approach to reporting on Nigeria and other nations, and also called on the Nigerian government to reassess its engagement with the organization. “As citizens who value truth and fairness, we must stand united in our resistance against the biased narratives perpetuated by Amnesty International. We cannot allow ourselves to be swayed by false information and prejudiced viewpoints. It is imperative that we hold organizations like Amnesty International accountable for their actions and demand transparency and impartiality in their work. “We call on our government to distance itself from the activities of Amnesty International and to reconsider its support for the organization. It is crucial that our leaders prioritize the dissemination of accurate and unbiased information, rather than aligning themselves with entities that promote skewed narratives and questionable agendas. “In a world rife with misinformation and propaganda, it is essential that we remain vigilant and discerning. We must not be complacent in the face of biased narratives, but rather we must actively challenge them and demand accountability from those who seek to manipulate the truth for their own gain. “Let us stand together in defense of truth and justice, and let us not waver in our commitment to upholding the principles of fairness and integrity. By holding organizations like Amnesty International accountable for their actions, we can ensure a more just and transparent world for all.” he added. |
The Oduduwa Frontiers has strongly disagreed with recent comments by the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, regarding the midterm performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing their assertions as "misleading" and lacking in proper context. In a statement issued by its National President, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem, the Oduduwa Frontiers expressed disappointment at Afenifere’s claim that Nigeria’s development indicators have regressed under the current administration, calling the remarks “unrealistic” and “uninformed.” He said: “The assertion that every human development and sociopolitical index has regressed since the inception of this administration is not only misleading but also reflects a profound misunderstanding of the complexities facing our nation today. “Firstly, it is essential to recognize that the challenges confronting Nigeria are multifaceted and deeply rooted in years of mismanagement and neglect. The previous administration left a legacy fraught with economic instability, infrastructural decay, and social unrest. “To hold President Tinubu accountable for the consequences of these long-standing issues is not only unfair but also undermines the very essence of responsible governance. “The Oduduwa Frontiers believes that a fair and constructive evaluation of any administration must take into account the context in which it operates, including the historical and socio-economic challenges inherited from predecessors.” The Oduduwa Frontiers criticized Afenifere for what it described as an unrealistic expectation of instant results, noting that the “Renewed Hope” agenda was never a promise of overnight transformation, but a call to long-term reform and national recovery. “The Tinubu administration has faced unprecedented challenges, including economic shocks, security threats, and a global environment still reeling from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors, which were largely unforeseen, have significantly influenced the government's ability to deliver on its promises. “Moreover, it is disheartening to see Afenifere, a group historically committed to the principles of democracy and good governance, join the ranks of those who hastily judge the Tinubu administration without acknowledging the broader context. The political landscape is rife with complexities, and it is crucial to engage in informed discourse rather than resort to sensationalism. “The Oduduwa Frontiers advocates for a constructive dialogue that encourages collaboration among all stakeholders, including political opponents, to foster a more robust democratic process. “It is also vital to highlight the efforts made by the Tinubu administration in addressing pressing issues. Initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and promoting economic diversification are already underway. “While the outcomes may not be immediately visible, the groundwork being laid today is crucial for sustainable development in the future. The Oduduwa Frontiers urges Afenifere and other critics to recognize these efforts and engage in a more nuanced discussion about the progress being made. The group called on Afenifere to reassess its position and approach to evaluating the Tinubu administration. “We implore them to move beyond sensational rhetoric and to engage in constructive criticism that acknowledges the complexities of governance. As a nation, we must unite in our efforts to foster a democratic environment that promotes dialogue, understanding, and collaboration.” they added. |
CHRF hails military, Defence ministry for security secures The Coalition for Human Rights and Freedom (CHRF), has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence for their unwavering efforts in restoring security and stability across the country, particularly in the northern region. The group also declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. In a statement by CHRF Secretary General, Tijjani Nana Lawal, hailed the strategic leadership of the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, whose stewardship, he said has driven remarkable progress in the fight against terrorism and banditry over the past two years. He said: “The Coalition for Human Rights and Freedom (CHRF) wishes to express its profound appreciation for the unwavering efforts and sacrifices made by the Nigerian troops, as well as the strategic initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Defence under the stewardship of Minister Badaru Abubakar. “Over the past two years, these commendable actions have significantly advanced the fight against insecurity, particularly in the northern region of our great nation. “The relentless operations spearheaded by the Defence Ministry, particularly in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), have yielded remarkable successes in dismantling the strongholds of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). “Through these concerted efforts, numerous high-value targets have been neutralized, and vast territories previously under terrorist control have been reclaimed. This progress not only reflects the military's tactical proficiency but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational threats. “In addition to military operations, the Defence Ministry has enhanced intelligence sharing and deployed advanced surveillance technologies in the Lake Chad region. These initiatives have fortified our cross-border response capabilities and have been instrumental in countering the multifaceted security crises that plague our nation. “From the desperate attacks in the northeast to the rampant banditry and kidnappings in the northwest, the Nigerian troops have demonstrated resilience and adaptability, crucial attributes in the ongoing battle against these evolving threats. “Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has prioritized security as a fundamental pillar of governance, the Defence Ministry has been invigorated with a renewed sense of purpose. “The President's firm directive, "Enough is enough," resonates not only as a rallying cry for our military but also as a clarion call for all Nigerians to unite in overcoming the challenges that threaten our peace and stability. This political will has galvanized efforts across the nation, fostering a collaborative environment among all stakeholders in the security sector.” CHRF also praised the Ministry of Defence for promoting synergy among the Armed Forces and security agencies through the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre. This, the group noted, has helped unify operational strategies and produce measurable outcomes. “This collaborative approach has yielded tangible results, including the neutralization of over 13,500 terrorists and criminals and the rescue of nearly 10,000 hostages from the clutches of terror. “Moreover, the operational successes recorded in the northeast, northwest, and north-central regions of Nigeria are a testament to the effectiveness of the Defence Ministry's strategies. “The neutralization of notorious bandit kingpins and the disruption of criminal networks have restored a semblance of peace to many communities, allowing thousands of displaced citizens to return to their homes. “The gradual resurgence of socio-economic activities in areas previously besieged by violence is a clear indication that our military efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. “It is crucial to recognize that the fight against insecurity extends beyond mere military engagement. The CHRF firmly believes that a holistic approach, combining military action with socio-economic development and robust governance, is essential for achieving lasting peace.” he said However, CHRF emphasized that lasting peace requires more than military might. It called for a comprehensive approach that blends armed engagement with socio-economic development, education, and good governance. He added, “The Defence Ministry's commitment to deradicalization initiatives and community engagement programs, such as Operation Safe Corridor, reflects an understanding that winning hearts and minds is as vital as defeating armed adversaries. “As we commend the efforts of our troops and the Defence Ministry, we also urge all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support for our armed forces. The challenges we face are complex and multifaceted, rooted in historical socio-political fractures and exacerbated by economic dislocations. It is imperative that we collectively foster an environment of unity and resilience, standing in solidarity with those who protect our nation. “In light of these developments, the CHRF is committed to mobilizing massive support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reelection in 2027. We believe that continuity in leadership is essential for sustaining the momentum achieved in securing the North and the entire nation. “President Tinubu's administration has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to national security, economic development, and social cohesion. His leadership has been instrumental in fostering an environment conducive to peace and stability, which is vital for the progress of our region and the country as a whole.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), on Tuesday, expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood disaster that has struck Niger State, claiming the lives of over 160 people and destroying billions of naira worth of infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. The Forum called on the Federal Government to take swift and comprehensive measures to support flood victims, including the deployment of relief materials, provision of medical and psychosocial support, and restoration of essential services. In a condolence message issued by its spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the Forum conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Niger State. The Forum expressed serious concern over the recurring nature of such floods, citing climate change, poor urban planning, weak environmental management, and inadequate disaster preparedness as key underlying issues. Jiddere said: The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to the people and Government of Niger State, following the tragic and catastrophic flood disaster that has claimed the lives of over 160 citizens and resulted in the destruction of homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure worth billions of naira “This painful tragedy is not an isolated event. It echoes similar devastating floods that swept through several parts of Northern Nigeria in the past year, highlighting an alarming trend of recurrent natural disasters that continue to inflict severe humanitarian and socio-economic consequences on affected communities. “The Forum is profoundly concerned by the recurring nature of these flood incidents, which reflect not only changing climate patterns but also systemic challenges in the areas of urban planning, environmental management, and disaster preparedness. The loss of so many lives and the scale of destruction witnessed in Niger State demand a robust, coordinated, and sustained response at the highest levels of government.” NEF stresses that such intervention should be undertaken in close collaboration with the Niger State Government to ensure effective coordination, proper targeting of aid, and long-term recovery planning. Furthermore, the Forum urges the Federal Government to commission a thorough investigation into the causes and contributing factors behind the flooding. Jiddere added, “This should involve expert assessments of water management infrastructure, drainage systems, land use practices, and emergency response mechanisms. The outcome of such an investigation must inform the development of a national flood mitigation strategy tailored to the specific vulnerabilities of Northern Nigeria. “To avert future disasters of this magnitude, NEF recommends urgent investment in modern flood control systems, rehabilitation and expansion of existing drainage networks, reinforcement of riverbanks, and the establishment of early warning systems. Additionally, there must be a commitment to public education and community-level preparedness, particularly in flood-prone areas. “The Northern Elders Forum stands in solidarity with the victims of this tragedy and reaffirms its commitment to advocating for policies and actions that protect the lives, dignity, and welfare of all Nigerians. Signed.” |
included teams from GSS Garki, GSS Gwarinpa, JSS Jabi, and GSS Tudu-Wada. In a dramatic finale, GSS Gwarinpa Estate emerged overall champions, clinching the coveted team trophy.
