The Cross River State chapter of the Niger Delta Progressive Youth Leadership Foundation (ND-PYLF), has criticized Governor Bassey Otu for failing to fulfill his promises to the youth since the beginning of his first term in office. ND-PYLF lamented the absence of sustainable initiatives that could equip young people with skills, employment, or entrepreneurial support. The secretary, Engr. Sunday Odey Ogbudu and spokesperson, Wilfred Ekawu, in a statement, expressed disappointment over what it described as the governor’s lack of commitment to youth development, job creation, and empowerment programs. They said: “Governor Otu came into office with promises of a brighter future for the youth, but so far, there has been little to no progress. Unemployment remains high, and opportunities for young people are scarce. His administration has not prioritized youth empowerment as expected. “We had high hopes that his leadership would usher in a new era of youth inclusiveness in governance and economic development, but what we see today is neglect and a failure to engage the youth meaningfully.” The group urged the governor to reassess his administration’s approach and implement concrete policies that would benefit the younger generation before the situation worsens. “The youth are the backbone of Cross River’s future, and if they are ignored, the state will suffer in the long run. We call on Governor Otu to fulfill his campaign promises and take decisive action toward youth development.” https://guardian.ng/joe-komolafe/foundation-accuses-otu-of-neglecting-cross-river-youths/ |
A coalition of youth organizations, under the aegis of the Niger Delta Youth Council for Good Governance and the Middle Belt Youth Stakeholders' Initiative, on Thursday, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reconsider its declaration of socialite Dr. Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu as wanted. They said that the declaration of Achimugu wanted by the anti-corruption agency came to them as a rude shock. In a joint statement, by Comrade Emma Niboro and Ali Ameh, the groups expressed shock over the EFCC’s decision, describing Achimugu as a committed advocate for youth empowerment and the welfare of the less privileged. “We know the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, as a man who came with utmost zeal to sanitize the agency. He has already demonstrated this and we are proud of his achievements so far. “However, we urge him to resist pressure from politicians, which is a plague that has dwarfed EFCC for several years of its existence. “The commission had hitherto remained a tool for politicians to undue their perceived political foes and this has always rubbed off on the credibility of the agency. “The case of Achumugu doesn’t appear to be different in any way, as the haste with which she was declared wanted showed there is a hand of Esau and voice of Jacob. “Our appeal is that the commission should withdraw the wanted tag on her and give her ample time to report to the commission, as she has never been indicted of any offence whether in Nigeria or outside the country.” the statement read. While noting that Achimugu is a global figure, they added that they can always vouch for her integrity, adding that, “We know her, she has always been of immense help to the youths and other members of the society. Her closeness to certain politicians should not be used as a tool to persecute or harass her.” https://dailytrust.com/lift-wanted-tag-on-achimugu-coalition-urges-efcc/ |
The Association of Labour Veterans and Trade Union Assembly, called on Nigerians to adopt a more constructive approach when engaging with the government, while also recognizing the administration’s efforts to address economic challenges. The union urged Nigerians to distinguish between constructive criticism and outright hostility, stressing that respectful dialogue is more effective than aggressive rhetoric. In a statement following the National Administrative Council meeting, former National Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Isa Tijjani, outlined key observations and recommendations on national issues. Tijjani said: “What is good for the goose is also good for the gander! At the beginning of this administration, prices of food stuff rose high and cries and complaints of hunger pervaded the air across Nigeria. “It was complaint upon complaint and the government kept begging citizens for patience that things will soon change. Now the efforts of the President and his aides have worked assiduously and prices have drastically gone down. “I am yet to hear the word of thank you and appreciation to the President and his aides. To energies and make them do more work for the benefit of the country's appreciation is crucial. “We want to urge Nigerians to distinguish between constructive criticism and hatred. Take it or leave it. Today the President of the country is Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to advise him in a humble and respectful manner will be better than fire and brimstone. You can gain more by constructive engagement than by threats and name callings." The association also condemned the recent killings in Edo State, describing them as cowardly acts meant to incite unrest. He added, “The despicable act of murder as committed in Edo is not only an act of cowardice but intended to generate bad blood and set the country on fire. To this end, an action taken by both the President and the Governor of Edo is welcome. We hope and look forward to bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice. “Lastly our members are advised to attend the General Executive Council that will soon be conveyed for the sake of approving these positions and making sure it is disseminated to every nook and cranny of our nation using the instrument of engagement under them State, local government and wards. We want to thank the President and all elected personalities in our country.” |
The Arewa Youth Council for Justice, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to withdraw its "wanted" declaration against socialite and businesswoman Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu. It will be recalled that the EFCC, through its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, recently declared Achimugu wanted over alleged money laundering. The council in a statement by its National President, Isak Mammud, and National Secretary, Timothy Isaiah, the group accused the EFCC of attempting to pressure Achimugu into falsely implicating the two political figures. While describing Achimugu as a known business and internationally renowned socialite, the Northern group urged the EFCC to drop the ‘wanted tag’ on her. The group alleged that the EFCC's action was politically motivated, driven by a desperate plot by certain politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections. Prior to this, allegations surfaced that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had, through Achimugu, provided campaign funds for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, an allegation both parties have vehemently denied. They noted that, “This is nothing different but a rehearsal of the earlier claims that funds were provided to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar through her. This has been refuted by both the Lagos State Governor and Alhaji Abubakar. “This idea of EFCC turning into a tool for political witch-hunting should end; we see no reason why a successful woman, who has brought hope to several homes, should be used as an object of a political chess game ahead of the 2027 general election. “It is even more worrisome considering the haste to which she was declared wanted by the commission. “We urge the Chairman of the EFCC to resist undue pressure and work for Nigerians and not as a willing tool in the hands of politicians who are desperate to silence others ahead of the 2027 general elections.” |
A non-profit organization, PAD-UP Africa, in partnership with the Shield Girls2Women Initiative and the community chief, advocated for mental and menstrual health awareness across the Karmo community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They emphasized the need for economic empowerment for women, linking financial instability to mental health struggles and calling for free sanitary pads to address these challenges. The Project Director of Shield Girls2Women Initiative, Florence Ibrahim, disclosed this in Abuja, during the commemoration of International Women's Day 2025. The event focused on raising awareness about the connection between mental and menstrual health. She stressed that the initiative is not a one-time event, as the organization plans to expand its outreach to other communities. Ibrahim said: “When a woman is under extreme stress, she becomes mentally unstable, which can also affect her menstrual cycle, sometimes leading to irregular periods. That’s why developing coping mechanisms is essential. Our goal today is to equip women and girls with strategies to manage these challenges effectively. “We chose this particular community because it has both older women and younger girls. This is an intergenerational conversation, where older women can share their experiences and coping strategies with the younger generation to help them navigate these challenges better.” In her remarks, the Founder and Executive Director of PAD-UP Africa, Ashley Lori, highlighted the link between financial struggles and domestic abuse among women in the community. She said: “We have observed that many women in this community face domestic abuse, largely due to financial struggles that make it difficult to meet their daily needs. “As a result, they often find themselves trapped in a cycle they cannot escape. This marks our fourth year working in this community, and while progress has been made, there is still much to be done. “This year’s theme, ‘Accelerating Action, represents a domino effect.’ We believe that when women support one another, real change begins. Many women do not realize the importance of self-empowerment and personal growth. “That’s why we are here,:to foster collaboration, inclusivity, skill development, and capacity building. Our focus extends beyond mental health; it encompasses holistic empowerment. Mental health is deeply connected to everyday challenges. “Today, these women have come to understand that issues such as menstrual cramps, hormonal imbalances, period stains, or a lack of access to sanitary products should not be suffered in silence. It is safe to talk about these challenges with fellow women. “When one woman is struggling, another can be her source of strength. This space encourages open conversations about topics they might not feel comfortable discussing elsewhere. “Talking about these issues is essential, not just among women but also with their spouses and families. When a woman is trained, uplifted, and empowered, she not only thrives but also contributes positively to her community. “Accelerating Action means pushing for inclusivity and better mental health so that women can fully participate in different sectors of society. Our mission extends beyond this community; we are also reaching out to urban areas because, despite differences in location, women everywhere share common struggles.” The initiative also seeks to destigmatize menstrual health challenges, such as hormonal imbalances, period stains, and lack of access to sanitary products. Also speaking at the event, the Village Head of Karmo Sabo, Jiwa Chiefdom, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Umar Sarki Gani, praised the initiative’s efforts in improving hygiene awareness in the community. He further called on the government to enhance environmental protection efforts in rural areas. Gani said: “I sincerely appreciate the education and enlightenment these women bring to our community. Their efforts have been truly uplifting, helping women feel better about themselves, maintain proper hygiene, and adopt better self-care practices. “Many communities lack proper waste disposal facilities. If the government could deploy environmental protection trucks to help manage waste, it would significantly improve sanitation.” He also advocated for the continuous involvement of health experts in rural communities, adding that, “The government should keep sending experts from the hygiene and health sectors to educate both men and women. If this initiative is sustained, we will make significant progress.” One of the beneficiaries expressed her gratitude: “I feel great and truly grateful for the enlightenment I received today. Thank you so much for providing us with sanitary pads; we are all deeply grateful.”

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to end what it described as the unjust persecution of socialite Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu, OFR. The group also condemned the manner in which the commission carried out a raid on Achimugu’s residence in Abuja. A viral video recently surfaced online, showing EFCC officials reportedly inside the Achimugu family home. This incident followed the commission’s declaration of Achimugu as a wanted person. In a statement, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, criticized the EFCC for declaring a national honoree wanted just days after summoning her for questioning, and described the move as unwarranted and excessive. Reports also alleged that Achimugu’s 80-year-old mother was subjected to inhumane treatment during the raid, including being forced to sit on the bare floor, denied water, and tortured. Okwu said enquiry by the Igbo group showed that some days after Achimugu was informed of the invitation by her lawyer, the commission rushed to the media declaring her wanted even when their letter in the public domain stated that everything accused her of is ALLEGEDLY and she is presently not in the country Okwu said: “This development clearly smarks of a premeditated agenda to embarrass and discredit her personality. What else could justify the haste for an alleged crime to warrant being declared wanted just some days after she was invited by the commission? “Mrs Achimugu is a global figure, not a politician and a national honours recipient, as well as a recipient of the US President's award. This calibre of a person can never go under hiding. “The fact that she is currently out of the country when the EFCC extended an invitation to her does not warrant their hasty declaration on alleged case without a competent court sanctioning such action. “This is utterly reprehensible, and we urge that the EFCC should not continue to be used as a tool for political witch-hunting. “Mrs Achimugu is an established, decent, and well to do businesswoman who respects the laws and humanity and from a respected family. Her source of wealth has never been a source of controversy or hidden. “We want to declare that her rights should be respected; her contributions to the growth of citizens and the nation should not be ignored. The EFCC should withdraw the wanted tag on her.” While quoting Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and Section 36 of the Nigerian Police Act, the Youth President said the relevant laws prohibit arrest by proxy. He added, “the reported invitation and declaration of Mrs. Achimugu is unlawful and a gross violation of the provisions of Nigeria’s relevant laws. We had waited to see whether the commission would make a turn, but its silence means that they are bent on tarnishing her image for someone who is private and law abiding. “This is worrisome and should be condemned in all totality. There is no justification for their actions. This is a gross illegality. “We recall that the EFCC did announce that it would stop this kind of raid, but it appears that nothing has changed. This crude method of arrest defies all logic and legality. All these go to show that there is more to this than meets the eye. It is albeit political is pure harassment to satisfy certain interests. “Having said this, we urge the Chairman of the EFCC, who pledged before now to reform the commission, to direct the operatives to act right and let the law take it due course without further delay or embarrassment” |
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of some travellers along Uromi Road in Edo State. Director General of the Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu said mob action remain unlawful, inhumane, and goes against the principles of justice and due process. NOA extends deepest condolences to the families of the victims and share in their grief during this difficult time. NOA, in a statement by his Deputy Director of Communications and Media, Mr. Paul Odenyi, said, “Every Nigerian, regardless of background or location, deserves the right to a fair trial and protection under the law." The Agency feels confident that security Agencies will rise to the occasion especially as President Bola Tinubu has directed full investigation and ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice. The DG said: "Real Nigerians are known for their unity, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law. Whenever there are suspicions of crime, citizens should report to the appropriate security agencies rather than resorting to extrajudicial actions. "The NOA remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and the values that define us as a nation. Let us work together to uphold justice and safeguard the sanctity of human life." He said |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Edo State Government and the Federal Government following the brutal mob attack that led to the killing of innocent Northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State. The victims were reportedly returning home to celebrate the end of Ramadan and Eid Kabir with their families when they were attacked. NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, in a statement, condemned the killings as “barbaric, extra-judicial, and cowardly,” calling for urgent action to address the situation. He said: “The North has tolerated numerous such animalistic and cannibalistic acts of recklessness from some Southern part of Nigeria in the past. This must come to an end. “The North will take stringent action in response to this inhumane attack on its peace-loving people. Consequently, the NEF hereby demands the following immediate actions from the authorities in Edo State and the Federal Government. “The swift recovery of the bodies of the victims and their dignified transfer to their families for an honorable and befitting burial in accordance with their respective faiths. The arrest and trial of all individuals responsible for the attack and the brutal killings of the innocent travellers.” The forum also demands a public prosecution of the perpetrators and those that aided the crime to ensure full transparency and accountability. He add, “The due payment of compensation to the families of the victims, in line with the prescribed standards of their respective faiths. An unreserved apology from the people and authorities of Edo State, with a commitment to ensuring that such barbaric behavior never occurs again. “An unreserved apology from the Edo State Government to the North for this heinous attack on its people. The punishment of the perpetrators must be witnessed by the public to serve as a deterrent to any such future acts of violence. “The NEF demands that the Edo State Government and the Federal Government take concrete and visible steps to fulfill these demands within fourteen (14) days from the date of this release. Failure to do so will compel the North to take all necessary actions to seek justice for her people and the North. “The Federal Government must ensure that justice is served to the victims and their families to preserve peace, stability, and the peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians." The NEF urged Northern communities to remain calm and patient while it pursues the matter through the appropriate government agencies. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the gruesome killing of 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State. It recalled that the tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, was the result of a grave misjudgment, as the victims were falsely accused of kidnapping. This led to an enraged mob taking the law into their own hands, brutally murdering the innocent travelers. In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, condemned the act, describing it as ‘barbaric and unacceptable.’ He lamented the loss of innocent lives, emphasizing that the victims were legitimate travelers, not criminals. He said: “The victims were not criminals; they were ordinary citizens traveling for legitimate purposes. The actions of the mob, fueled by misinformation and ignorance, represent a grave affront to the values of humanity and decency. “We call upon all responsible citizens to reject such mob justice and to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to violence based on unfounded allegations. “We seek answers as to why the response from security operatives was alarmingly delayed. By the time they arrived on the scene following a distress call, the damage had already been done, and lives were irrevocably lost. “This raises serious questions about the effectiveness and readiness of our security apparatus to protect the lives of all citizens, irrespective of their regional or ethnic origins. We implore the relevant authorities to ensure that such lapses do not occur in the future, as the safety of all Nigerians must be paramount. “We must emphasize that this tragedy serves as a reminder that the people of the South, like those of the North, are also living in various parts of Nigeria. “We must cultivate a sense of coexistence and mutual respect among all ethnic groups, recognizing that violence and hatred only breed further division. It is imperative that we foster a national consciousness that transcends regional boundaries and promotes unity in diversity.” CNG demanded justice for the victims, calling on the government to take decisive action against the perpetrators to prevent future occurrences. The group also criticized the silence of Northern leaders, urging them to ensure the safety and protection of Northerners residing in different parts of the country. The CNG condemns the silence exhibited by leaders who claim to represent Northern interests, urging them to take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of Northerners across Nigeria. He added, “This call to action underscores a fundamental principle enshrined in Nigerian law: every citizen has the right to live and work anywhere in the country without facing discrimination or harassment. “The Coalition emphasizes that the rights of Northerners must be safeguarded, particularly against illegal harassment in their workplaces and communities. Furthermore, it advocates for their right to practice their faith freely, consistent with their means, and to receive protection when they find themselves as minorities in diverse localities. “This demand is not merely a plea for justice; it is a reminder of the shared responsibility among all Nigerians to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect. “In this moment of mourning, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We stand in solidarity with them and all who reject violence in any form. Together, we must work towards a future where dialogue prevails over violence, and where the sanctity of human life is upheld above all else.” https://authorityngr.com/2025/03/29/cng-condemns-killing-of-16-innocent-travellers-in-edo-calls-for-thorough-investigation/ |
A Northern youth group, Arewa Youth Council for Justice, has called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to put an end to the controversy surrounding her suspension by apologizing to the National Assembly. The call came in response to the escalating verbal exchange between Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi of Ebonyi Central and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili. In a statement signed by its National President, Isak Mammud, and National Secretary, Timothy Isaiah, the group expressed concern over the issue, warning that it was taking a disturbing turn and should be resolved immediately. While accusing Senator Natasha of escalating a matter that should have been amicably resolved in the Senate within hours, the youths said if something was not done urgently, the matter could get to a more dangerous stage. “What happened during the Senate Public Hearing could not have happened in the first place had Senator Natasha issued an apology to the Senate President and by extension the Senate a long time ago. “It is sad that mere change of seating position has been dragged to such an extent that the reputation of Nigeria’s image abroad is being dented over a trivial matter, which was now blown out of proportion to the extent of alleging sexual harassment. “We are troubled by the latest developments, including the shouting match during the public hearing, as well as the recall process against Senator Natasha. “Indeed, the time had come for the Senator to heed the voice of reason by apologizing to the Senate President, whose image was unnecessarily attacked,” the group said Commending Senate President Godswill Akpabio for maintaining his composure amid the crisis, the Arewa group condemned any attempt to flout Senate rules under the guise of unfounded allegations. However, the group also appealed to Akpabio to forgive Senator Natasha and facilitate her reinstatement if she tenders an unreserved apology. “However, we appeal that should the Senator tender an unreserved apology, the Senate President, in his usual humility and peaceful disposition, should forgive her and allow her to be restored to the Senate.” they added. |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), on Sunday, criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of attempting to mislead Nigerians while seeking political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections. The group condemned what it described as the hypocrisy and deception of Atiku and his allies, emphasizing their past failures in governance and their role in Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges. In a statement, by the Director of Strategic Communication for DWI, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, reminded Nigerians that both Atiku and El-Rufai were integral to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the same party they now criticize. He said: “This legacy raises critical questions about their current coalitions and genuine commitment to reform. The assertion that Atiku and El-Rufai are “all over the place attempting to deceive the people that they are saviors" underscores a critical perspective on their political maneuvers. “This movement has given rise to a growing skepticism among the electorate regarding the authenticity of their claims and intentions. As these figures seek to position themselves as solutions to pressing societal issues, it raises questions about their past actions and the credibility of their promises. “The history of these politicians is one marred by contradictions and a lack of accountability. All of them were integral to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party that has been in power for several years. “Their current criticisms of the APC, which they helped establish, raise questions about their sincerity and the motivations behind their sudden shift in allegiance. It is essential for Nigerians to remember that these politicians were not merely bystanders in the political process; they were key players who benefited from the very systems they now denounce. “DWI notes also that Nigeria has witnessed a plethora of challenges, including economic instability, widespread corruption, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite the opportunities presented by their long tenures in government, these politicians have little to show for their years of service. “The citizens have endured the consequences of their decisions, particularly regarding the subsidy regime. They benefited from subsidies during their time in power, only to later advocate for their removal, leading to increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians. “The removal of subsidies was implemented under the guise of economic reform, yet it disproportionately impacted the most vulnerable segments of society, exacerbating poverty and suffering. The group also blasted Atiku and El-Rufai for their silence during Nigeria’s worst security crises, including the rise of insurgency and banditry that has ravaged communities across the country. He added, “While the nation has grappled with the devastating impacts of insurgency and banditry, Atiku and his allies have remained conspicuously silent, folding their arms as communities were ravaged and lives were lost. This hypocrisy is not merely a political misstep; it is a betrayal of the trust bestowed upon them by the electorate. “As Atiku prepares to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 election cycle, he has assembled a coalition of disgruntled and irrelevant political figures, individuals who have long overstayed their welcome in a political landscape yearning for genuine leadership. “This coalition, which includes a parade of political has-beens such as the former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, serves as a glaring testament to the lack of credible vision for Nigeria’s future. “Their gathering was less a strategic alliance and more a shameful display of political theater, revealing their desperation to regain relevance amid a populace that has grown weary of empty promises and failed governance." “In a misguided effort to position themselves as champions of democracy, Atiku and his companions have condemned the State of Emergency imposed on Rivers State, labeling it unconstitutional. Yet, it is both shameless and embarrassing for leaders like Atiku and El-Rufai, who once thrived under the very system they now criticize, to present themselves as saviors of Nigerian democracy. “Their hypocrisy is glaring; they were silent when the nation faced crises, including the removal of fuel subsidies that have plunged countless Nigerians into suffering. Now, they seek to capitalize on the very discontent they helped create, attempting to rebrand themselves as defenders of democracy while ignoring the consequences of their past actions. “The Democracy Watch Initiative serves as a crucial reminder to Nigerians that these individuals lack the competence and moral authority to lead. Their track record is marred by complicity in decisions that have led to the current state of despair in Nigeria. Atiku, El-Rufai, and their coalition are not the answer to our problems; they are part of the system that has failed us time and again. “Their attempts to repackage themselves as guardians of democracy are nothing more than a thinly veiled ruse aimed at distracting the public from their past failures and the damage they have inflicted on our nation. “Nigerians are not fooled by their antics. We have witnessed their governance failures, their silence in the face of violence and displacement in the North-West, and their complicity in policies that have exacerbated our economic woes. The time for these outdated leaders has passed. Their coalition is a desperate grasp for power that will ultimately lead to a dead end.” The organization urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and reject the attempts of these politicians to rebrand themselves as champions of democracy. “Let it be known: the era of Atiku and his band of political relics is over. Nigerians will not listen to them again. The future of our nation demands leaders who prioritize the needs of the people over their own ambitions, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that those who have failed us do not return to power.” |
The Joint Action Movement of Nigeria (JAMN), demanded transparency in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) probe of Bauchi State officials, expressing shock and disbelief over the recent arrest of the state’s Accountant General, Sirajo Jaja, in Abuja. It urged the EFCC to carry out its investigations with professionalism, impartiality, and fairness to prevent public trust in the fight against corruption from being eroded. In a statement, JAMN Spokesman Kabiru Ibrahim Turaki, criticized the arrest, questioning the timing and intent of the EFCC’s actions, and warned that politically driven probes undermine public trust in governance and could have lasting consequences on the state’s administration. He said that the unexpected development has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation and whether it is an attempt to cast a shadow over the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed. Turaki suggested that the investigation might be politically motivated, aimed at discrediting the current administration. He warned that politically driven probes undermine public trust in governance and could have lasting consequences on the state’s administration. He Said: “The EFCC's claims of investigating Governor Bala Mohammed's alleged involvement in fraudulent activities further complicate the situation. The timing of these allegations raises questions about the motives behind the investigation. “Such actions could be politically motivated, aimed at undermining the credibility of the current administration. In a nation where political rivalries often manifest through legal and investigative means, this scenario is not uncommon. “The implications of these allegations could be far-reaching, affecting not only the reputation of the individuals involved but also the trust of the public in the governing institutions. “Moreover, the arrest of Jaja and the subsequent allegations against Governor Mohammed may have a chilling effect on public service and governance in Bauchi State. Public officials may become increasingly wary of performing their duties, fearing that their actions could be subject to scrutiny or misinterpretation as corrupt practices. “This could lead to a paralysis of governance, where officials hesitate to make decisions for the good of the public, ultimately hindering development and progress within the state. “Furthermore, JAMN advocates for the establishment of mechanisms to protect public officials who act in good faith. Safeguards are necessary to ensure that individuals such as Governor Mohammed who are committed to transparency and ethical governance are not unjustly targeted or vilified. The integrity of public service is paramount, and it is essential that those who serve the public can do so without fear of retribution for their actions. “We are particularly concerned about the manner in which this arrest was executed. Sirajo Jaja was attending the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting, an official duty crucial to the financial governance of our state, when he was abruptly interrupted by the EFCC. “This approach is not only disruptive but also raises ethical questions about the agency's methods and intentions. Such actions could have been avoided had the EFCC opted for a more professional and respectful approach, allowing the Accountant General to fulfill his official responsibilities while addressing any inquiries at a later time. “The conduct of the EFCC in this matter is deeply troubling. The sensationalism and politicization surrounding the arrest, coupled with the media trial of a public servant, have given rise to a narrative that many Nigerians perceive as an unacceptable political witch-hunt rather than a genuine effort to combat corruption. “It is imperative to recognize that the integrity of our institutions hinges on their ability to conduct investigations without bias and in a manner that upholds the dignity of individuals involved. “Moreover, the ramifications of this investigation have already led to significant developments, including the removal of the immediate former Accountant General and several permanent secretaries. While we acknowledge the importance of accountability in public service, we must also ensure that such actions are grounded in transparency and fairness, rather than driven by political motives. “As stakeholders in the governance of Bauchi State, we urge the EFCC to reconsider its approach and to conduct its investigations with the utmost professionalism and respect for due process.” He called on the Commission to ensure that its actions do not undermine public trust in the fight against corruption. It is crucial that all investigations be conducted impartially, allowing for due diligence and fair treatment of all individuals involved. “As the situation unfolds, it is imperative that all stakeholders prioritize justice and accountability, ensuring that the governance of Bauchi State remains focused on serving the interests of its citizens. “JAMN stands firmly against corruption in all its forms, but we equally stand for justice, fairness, and the dignity of public servants. We call on the EFCC to act responsibly and to prioritize the integrity of its operations over sensationalism and political expediency.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), on Friday, cautioned the Federal Government against engaging in political vendetta over the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, which has led to the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and State Assembly members for six months. The forum expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing that while the President is empowered under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to declare a state of emergency, such action must be justified by specific conditions outlined in the law. NEF spokesperson Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, in a statement, reminded the President that the ability to resolve political disputes through negotiation, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, and adjudication is a hallmark of democratic maturity. Jiddere said: "Subject to the provision of this constitution, the president may by instrument published in the official Gazette of the Government of the Federation issue a proclamation of a state of emergency in the Federation or any part thereof. “However, the president can only do so, if and only if, any the conditions stated in subsection 3 of Section 305 actually occurs which includes war, imminent invasion, breakdown of public order, clear and present danger, disaster or natural calamity, other public danger, or a request from the Governor of the State. “It is a public knowledge and indisputable fact that none of these conditions actually happened in Rivers State. Except perhaps for personal vendetta in alliance with the President's serving Federal Minister of the FCT and the immediate past Governor of Rivers State who has been in personal conflict with the suspended Governor for selfish interests rather than public good. “The maintenance of peace, public order and corporate existence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot be compromised on personal aggrandizement, and should be the primary concern of each Nigerian. “As such any form of disturbance in any part of the country will have a serious negative tendency and impact on the whole country. “The Federal Government and the President in particular must find a viable and permanent solution to the political crisis in Rivers State, and also immediately lift the suspension of the Governor, Deputy Governor and State Assembly to restore the spirit of democracy, justice and public order.” NEF urged the Federal Government to prevent the escalation of political disputes in other states, particularly in Kano, where tensions continue over the traditional leadership of the Kano Emirate. He added, “The naked and brutal abuse of political power can only pose imminent danger to the democratic processes in Nigeria which is currently facing serious numerous challenges.” |
Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, on Thursday, faulted President Bola Tinubu for swearing-in Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Rtd) as Rivers State sole administrator of Rivers State. The group’s reaction came as President Tinubu sworn in Ibas as Rivers State sole administrator on Wednesday. In a statement by the National President of the group, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said that the development in Rivers could throw the entire Niger Delta region in chaos. Okwu said the President was ill-advised into “Placing the interest of one man above the interest of the entire people of Rivers State.” It also described as shocking the swearing-in of the sole administrator even when the National Assembly has not ratified the state of emergency as clearly provided for in the constitution. The Ohanaeze youths said it was shocking that against the clear provisions of the constitution, “Mr President was wrongly advised by people who have ulterior motives. “We have always known Mr President as a democrat, one who fought for the country’s return to democracy, one wh0 even at some point condemned state emergency in the past, but today, the table has turned. “This should be condemned by all lovers of democracy and we expect Mr President to reverse it. The constitution clearly spells out how an elected governor should be removed. “We are at a loss for the hasty swearing-in of the sole administrator even while the President’s letter to the two chambers of the National Assembly is yet to be read, nor debated. “It does appear that some enemies of the government are misleading Mr President into taking some wrong decisions. All that is playing out is part of the 2027 politicking and we urge Mr President to weigh the kind of advice coming from people around him.” Okwu further said it was worrisome that in President Tinubu’s broadcast to the nation, no mention was made about the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Okwu added: “Everyone knows that Wike is the architect of the crisis in Rivers State. His overbearing attitude on Fubara led to this inglorious situation. “The same Wike stood against godfatherism when he was governor; but today, he doesn’t want to give the governor a breathing space. “But curiously, no mention of Wike was made in Mr President’s broadcast. This is totally wrong, we expect that Wike should also be suspended. “Mr President should as a father handle the Rivers situation with utmost care, just like he did Lagos and Ondo states, where he called the parties and resolved their issues.” |
The Bauchi Accountability and Truth Awareness Front (BATA) expresses its deep concern and condemnation regarding the recent actions taken by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against officials of the Bauchi State government, particularly the arrest of Alhaji Sirajo Mohammed Jaja, the Accountant General of Bauchi State. The EFCC's claims of a N70 billion fraud investigation, which has been linked to the honorable Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, are nothing more than a politically motivated witch-hunt aimed at undermining the integrity of our state leadership and destabilizing the progress achieved under the current administration. In a statement, the Chairman of BATA, Lawal Sani Ningi, said that the arrest of Alhaji Sirajo Mohammed Jaja, alongside individuals purportedly connected to him, raises serious questions about the motives behind the EFCC's actions. While the fight against corruption is a noble endeavor, it must be conducted with transparency, fairness, and a commitment to justice. Instead, we are witnessing a spectacle that appears to be driven by ulterior motives rather than genuine concern for accountability. The timing of these arrests, coinciding with critical periods in the politics of Bauchi State, suggests an orchestrated effort to tarnish the reputation of our state officials and, by extension, the office of the governor. It is imperative to note that the linking of this investigation to Governor Bala Mohammed is particularly alarming. Such insinuations serve only to distract from the real issues at hand and divert public attention from the significant strides the governor has made in governance, infrastructural development, and social welfare in Bauchi State. The governor's administration has consistently prioritized the welfare of the people, and it is disheartening to witness these achievements being overshadowed by unfounded allegations. BATA stands firmly against the politicization of anti-corruption efforts. We call upon the EFCC to conduct its investigations impartially and without bias. The integrity of our institutions is paramount, and any actions that compromise this integrity must be scrutinized and challenged. We urge the EFCC to provide concrete evidence to substantiate its claims rather than relying on mere speculation and conjecture. Furthermore, we call upon the citizens of Bauchi State to remain vigilant and discerning during this tumultuous period. It is crucial that we do not allow ourselves to be swayed by sensational headlines and politically charged narratives that seek to undermine our collective progress. The people of Bauchi deserve leaders who are committed to their welfare, not targets of politically motivated attacks. BATA reaffirms its commitment to accountability and truth in governance. We stand in solidarity with the officials of the Bauchi State government, including Governor Bala Mohammed, and we will continue to advocate for justice and transparency in all matters concerning our state. We urge the EFCC to reconsider its approach and focus on genuine efforts to combat corruption that do not compromise the principles of justice and fairness. |

He added, “Moreover, this alliance resonates strongly with the aspirations of the Nigerian youth, who form a substantial segment of the electorate. Young Nigerians are increasingly seeking leaders who prioritize education, job creation, and technological advancement. “The combined vision of Governor Mohammed and Peter Obi aligns with these aspirations, offering a roadmap for a future where opportunities abound for all Nigerians, irrespective of their background. “The South-South Alliance for Prosperity wholeheartedly welcomes the alliance between Governor Bala Mohammed and Peter Obi. We believe that this partnership has the potential to reshape Nigeria’s political narrative and inspire a generation that is eager for change. “As we move forward, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and engaged, holding our leaders accountable to the promises they make. The SSAP stands ready to support this alliance and work towards a prosperous and united Nigeria.” The SSAP calls upon all Nigerians to embrace this moment of hope and possibility, as we collectively strive for a brighter future for our beloved nation. |
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), has commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of the Nigerian Senate. The Coalition, comprising various grassroots and national civil society groups focused on deepening democracy in Nigeria and across Africa. In a statement jointly signed by Coalition Convener Martins Onyebuchi and Co-Convener Alhaji Mohammed Audu, emphasized the need for adherence to legislative procedures and mutual respect within the Senate. The group urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to tender an immediate apology over her recent allegations against Senate President Akpabio. The coalition said: “The Senate President position justifies his recent statement that he holds women in high esteem as against what Senator Natasha is parading all in name of sexual harassment, to maintain the institution's integrity the Senate President encourages Senator Natasha to apologize for the unnecessary outbursts which doesn't depict a true character of a distinguished Senator. “All over such platforms bestowed with law making responsibility always operate within laid down rules and procedure Nigerian Senate leadership can't be treated with impunity and reckless abandon. “It's high time you Senator Natasha should acknowledge your wrong doing by ignoring the Senate standing order and rule which every institution be stored with such responsibilities is expected to follow. “Just same way you comported yourself self at the recent international outing Senator Natasha followed the procedure and rules in making her presentation because you sat at rightful place provide for you, meanwhile if nothing is hidden behind your accusations while refusing to move to a new seat and raise the concern or humbly request change of seat? “The acclaimed sexual harassment false alarm started in response for change of sitting position. However, we urge you to consider alternative peaceful and internal mechanisms to resolve this issue, prioritizing the safety and stability of Nigeria's democracy. Wrong can never be justified because sexual harassment can never be the reason for you not to comform with the Nigerian Senate laid down rules. “As a respected Civil Society Organization, we promote women's participation in politics devoid of emotions or blackmail, rather encourage a healthy and stable coexistence between both genders, it's very important for you to understand that your allegations is seriously colored with insubordination, disrespect to constituted authority and considering your past records of similar accusations to other individuals in the past,it still makes many Nigerians to doubt the genuinity of your claims. “Running to the international community even while you have submitted to the Nigerian court was also the height of it. However the major concern is to ensure that you're not being influenced by external interest to disrupt leadership of the Nigerian Senate. “If you are truly genuine and respect the institution you would adopted a better approach in dealing with such acclaimed allegations instead of bringing shame to the entire nation all the name sexual harassment.” The coalition called for patriotism and unity, urging all parties to prioritize the nation’s interests over individual disputes. They added, “We appreciate Akpabio's leadership and commitment to Nigeria's development. His dedication to the country's progress is evident in his efforts to maintain peace and stability within the Senate in the face of provocation, his composure and openness to his colleagues showed good leadership qualities . “Let us move forward with patriotism, prioritizing the nation's interest above individual concerns. We seek a peaceful resolution, and we're confident that, together, we can achieve desired democracy and entrench rule of law.” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), on Wednesday, expressed deep concern over the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, cautioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against the influence of Nyesom Wike, the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It urged Tinubu to approach the situation with wisdom and restraint, warning that an emotional or miscalculated response could fuel further unrest in the Niger Delta. We find it imperative to caution the President to tread carefully in his dealings with the situation, particularly in light of the cynical interests being advanced by Nyesom Wike, the former governor of the state. In a statement, CNG National Coordinator Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi warned that Wike’s actions are driven by self-interest rather than the welfare of the people. Charanchi said: “Wike has demonstrated a troubling propensity for opportunism, leveraging his political influence to create chaos and discord within the region. His actions, driven by self-interest rather than the welfare of the people, have the potential to drag the entire country and its judicial establishment into a state of international derision. We implore President Tinubu not to allow Wike’s deranged opportunism to overshadow his sense of reasoning and judgment. “The general acceptance that Wike is "deranged" and "senile" reflects a deeply polarized political landscape, where personal interests often overshadow substantive discourse. It is imperative for President Tinubu to navigate this complex environment with discernment and strength. “Engaging with Wike's provocations without succumbing to emotional reactions is essential; any misstep could lead to widespread unrest within the region. The potential for escalated uprisings underscores the necessity for a measured response, prioritizing dialogue over confrontation. “Instead of allowing Wike's rhetoric to dictate policy, Tinubu should focus on fostering unity and addressing the underlying grievances that fuel discontent. By doing so, he can reinforce his leadership while mitigating the risk of exacerbating tensions. “It is alarming to note that just 48 hours after Wike's provocations led to President Tinubu declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, the entire Niger Delta has erupted into violence. Reports indicate that oil installations, vital to the nation’s economy, have been targeted and destroyed. “This escalation of unrest is not merely a localized issue; it poses a significant threat to national stability and economic security. The actions of a single individual should not dictate the trajectory of an entire region or the policies of our nation.” We call on Mr. President to reflect on the historical context surrounding Wike, who along with others, played a significant part in the tumultuous tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, contributing to the challenges that ultimately led to Jonathan's political fall. President Tinubu must remain vigilant regarding the barrage of negative commentary that has surfaced in recent hours since the declaration of emergency in Rivers State. This scrutiny not only reflects public sentiment but also serves as a cautionary signal against the potential pitfalls of aligning too closely with individuals such as Wike, whose past actions have raised concerns. We call on Tinubu to maintain a clear boundary, ensuring that the burdens of Wike's controversies and the animosities he has cultivated do not encumber his own leadership. We urge President Tinubu to recognize that Wike's maneuvers are not representative of the will of the people of Rivers State or the Niger Delta. Instead, they reflect the dangerous machinations of an individual more interested in personal gain than in the collective good. It is crucial for the President to align his actions with the principles of democracy and the rule of law, rather than succumbing to the whims of a self-serving politician. The challenge of addressing the inflated ego of Nyesom Wike adds an intriguing layer to Tinubu's leadership. By fostering unity and collaboration, Tinubu has the opportunity to not only mitigate Wike's assertiveness but also to steer the nation towards a more cohesive and productive political environment. The world awaits decisive actions that will reflect Tinubu's commitment to effective governance and the broader aspirations of the Nigerian populace. The CNG calls on stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political leaders, and the citizenry, to rally around the ideals of peace, unity, and democratic governance, adding that, “The current crisis should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement over violence and division. “We reiterate our call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise caution and wisdom in navigating the complex political landscape of Rivers State. It is essential to resist the allure of Wike's opportunistic politics that threatens to undermine the very fabric of our democracy. “Let us not allow the reckless ambitions of one individual to set the nation on a path of conflict and instability. We stand ready to support any initiative that seeks to restore peace and promote the welfare of all Nigerians.” |

The Igbo Progressive Women has called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to stop further embarrassing the Nigerian Government before the International Community. This came amid Senator Natasha’s recent claims that there was a plan to have her arrested upon her return to Nigeria. Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed the move is linked to her participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York on 11 March, where she raised concerns about her suspension from the Senate and sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. “I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is still in the US after the IPU meeting, said. In a statement, the President of the Organisation, Chief Mrs Grace Ohabuenyi, said that the manner Senator Natasha had dragged the matter was beginning to appear that she was being sponsored by certain elements to embarrass the country. The group demanded that her trip to the IPU be thoroughly investigated to unravel those behind what it called “a calculated attempt to ridicule the Nigerian Government before the international community.” She wondered why the Senator, who had earlier filed a suit before the court could not wait for its determination but chose to rush to the IPU in order to dent the country’s image. Ohabuenyi said: “We had earlier exercised restraint over this matter owing to the fact that it bothers on a fellow woman, but the dimension it has taken seems there is more to it than meets the eyes. “We took notice of the statement issued by our sister, Mrs Unoma Akpabio when this matter started, wherein she disclosed that both her family and that of Senator Natasha are family friends. One then wonders why she never mentioned the alleged harassment to the Senate President’s wife, a family friend, but only chose to go public after she went against Senate rules. “Ordinarily, her outcry would have attracted sympathy, but the manner it was gone, including all the Senators standing together against her, means that she is not on the right path. “Now, she ran to the international community, where she appeared as a Nigerian Senator, despite being on suspension. Our question is- who facilitated her appearance? How did she get there? What were her motives behind running to the international community even when her matter is before a court of competent jurisdiction? “These questions are yearning for answers and one if forced to say that certain elements who don’t have the interest of the country at heart, could be at best behind this drama.” The women's group, while calling for a thorough investigation of the Senator’s trip by security agencies, expressed worry that actions such as this could work against women in politics. Ohabuenyi said: “We have been clamouring that women should be given serious positions in government, but when things like this happen, they demean all our efforts to bring about inclusivity. “Her actions are now clearly not about the Senate President but against the current federal government, and this is not in the best interests of women in government.” |
The Northern Unity Front (NUF), has criticized former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent efforts to position himself as a defender of northern values, accusing him of abandoning those very principles during his time in power. The group recalled his dismissive stance on the legacies of revered northern leaders, including Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other icons of Nigerian unity. In a statement, NUF Chairman Comrade Yusuf Umar urged northern leaders and constituents to reflect on El-Rufai’s tenure, which he described as marked by authoritarianism and a disregard for the region’s political heritage. Umar said: “El-Rufai governance style, characterized by a boldness that sometimes bordered on hubris, has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many who once saw him as a potential beacon of hope for the North. “His self-aggrandizing statements and actions, particularly during the deaths and political declines of key figures such as President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and President Goodluck Jonathan, showcased a profound disregard for the values of empathy and respect that are deeply entrenched in our culture. “In his quest for relevance, El-Rufai has made attempts to rewrite his narrative, seeking validation from the very leaders and constituents he once alienated. His previous disdain for the legacies of our founding fathers, including the revered Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other icons of Nigerian unity, has not been forgotten. “His dismissive remarks about these leaders, who fought tirelessly for the unity and progress of our nation, reveal a dangerous tendency to prioritize personal ambition over collective memory and respect. “The Northern Unity Front firmly believes that true leadership is rooted in humility and a deep understanding of the historical and cultural context of one’s constituency. El-Rufai’s authoritarian governance style, which sidelined dissenting voices and undermined democratic principles, has led to a significant erosion of his political capital. “His recent attempts to don the mantle of a savior are not only disingenuous but also an affront to the values that our region holds dear. As he seeks redemption in a shifting political landscape, we urge El-Rufai to reflect on the lessons of his past. Power is ephemeral, and those who wield it must do so with a profound awareness of the relationships that bind us together as a society.” The group called on northern leaders to prioritize collective progress over personal ambition, honor the legacies of past heroes, and uphold values of unity, respect, and humility. He added, “The Northern Unity Front remains committed to advocating for true leadership that honors the sacrifices of our past leaders and fosters a political culture that is inclusive, respectful, and progressive. “We invite all northern constituents to join us in holding our leaders accountable and ensuring that the values of our great region are upheld and cherished.” |
The South-South/South-West Alliance, on Monday, urged the 2023 presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to distance themselves from the "deceptive politics" of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. In a statement signed by Chairperson Ifeoma Efe and Secretary General Ayodele Toluwa, the alliance warned that El-Rufai has built a reputation for employing misinformation and manipulation, posing a risk to both Obi’s and Atiku’s political credibility. The Alliance said that it is imperative that Mr. Obi recognizes the potential damage that association with El-Rufai could inflict on his reputation and political aspirations. They called on all political actors to uphold truthfulness and responsible leadership, warning that any affiliation with those who thrive on deception could erode public trust and weaken the nation’s democratic foundations. He said: “El-Rufai's political career has been marred by a series of deceitful tactics and misleading narratives that seek to undermine the democratic process and manipulate public sentiment. “As a leader committed to transparency and accountability, Mr. Obi must not allow himself to be dragged into this quagmire of deceit. The people of Nigeria deserve honest leadership, and any association with figures who thrive on misinformation will only serve to tarnish his image and the ideals he represents. “Furthermore, we call upon Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), to unequivocally dissociate himself from El-Rufai’s antics. Political leaders must rise above the fray of petty politics and focus on the greater good of the nation. By distancing himself from El-Rufai, Atiku will demonstrate a commitment to integrity and the values that the Nigerian populace yearns for in its leaders. “We commend notable figures such as Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Sule Lamido for their courage in openly calling out El-Rufai’s lies and manipulative strategies. Their willingness to stand against the tide of deceit sends a powerful message that integrity must prevail in our political discourse. “It is crucial for leaders to set a standard of accountability and truthfulness, especially in an era where misinformation can easily sway public opinion and disrupt the democratic process. “The South-South/South-West Alliance firmly believes that no responsible political entity or individual should support El-Rufai’s tactics. His approach not only undermines the principles of democracy but also perpetuates a culture of distrust among the electorate. We urge all political actors to reject such behavior and instead focus on constructive dialogue and collaboration that will foster unity and progress for our nation.” They call on Peter Obi to uphold his values and not allow Nasir El-Rufai to stain his reputation with deceitful politics. They also urge Atiku Abubakar to take a stand against El-Rufai’s antics and align himself with the principles of integrity that our nation desperately needs, adding that, “Together, let us champion a political environment rooted in truth, accountability, and respect for the electorate.” |
Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, described the meeting between Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Mr Peter Obi as a starting point towards a new Nigeria. It could be recalled that Mohammed and Obi met in Bauchi, after which the governor declared: “I’m ready to work with Peter Obi. “We will make sure we come together, close ranks, bring good governance to the country, and give vibrant opposition with knowledge, timelines, and visions in such a manner that we will rescue and recover our country. “Our coming together is a message, and the message is going to resonate because all our colleagues, the PDP governors, are behind this kind of journey because it is a transcendental one. We are coming together to work together irrespective of party, region, religion, or any other thing.” Reacting, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said younger Nigerians were needed to chart a new path for the country. Okwu, in a statement noted that Nigeria needs energetic and vibrant leaders who would think out of the box in order to restore the country’s fortunes. He said those not above 65 years were the kind of leaders “the country needs at this moment when things don’t really seem to be getting better. “Nigeria has faced a lot in the hands of leaders who may mean well for the country, but may not have the strength to drive home the vision they have for the nation. As we inch closer to the 2027 general election, younger NIgerians in the mold of Governor Bala Mohammed and Mr Peter Obi are in good position to reposition the country. “As the governor said in his speech, we urge them to close ranks, work together and chart a new course for Nigeria. The Nigerian youths are ready to work with anyone with a clear vision for the prosperity of the nation. “Governor Mohammed as the leader of the PDP Governors’ Forum has been vocal on national issues, just like Mr Peter Obi. Such vibrant leaders are needed to navigate the country out of its present challenges.” Okwu called on other younger political leaders to bury their selfish ambition by coming together to define the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has expressed strong support for the recent political moves by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, describing them as a significant step toward national unity and collaboration. In a statement by the Director of Strategic Communication for DWI, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, the group commended Obi’s visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who also serves as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum. He said Obi's visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the esteemed leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, marks a pivotal moment in Nigerian politics. According to DWI, the visit marks a crucial moment in Nigerian politics, signaling a shift toward greater cooperation among political leaders. Ahmed said: “We commend Peter Obi for his courageous decision to embrace the most powerful opposition party in the country, thereby positioning himself squarely within the mainstream political discourse. “Peter Obi's visit culminated in a respectful homage to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu. This gesture not only reflects Obi’s recognition of the vital role traditional institutions play in promoting peace and unity within our communities but also underscores his commitment to engaging with all facets of Nigerian society. “Traditional leaders have historically been instrumental in fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups, and their involvement in political discussions enhances the legitimacy of efforts aimed at fostering national cohesion. “We applaud Governor Bala Mohammed’s commendation of Peter Obi’s dedication to nation-building and inclusive leadership. Such praise is significant, as it emphasizes the necessity for collaboration among leaders from different political backgrounds. “It highlights a shared vision for Nigeria, one that transcends partisan divides and strives for the advancement of a prosperous and harmonious nation.” The group echoed Governor Mohammed’s call for unity and politics without bitterness, urging all political leaders to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect in addressing Nigeria’s challenges. He added, “In this light, we urge Peter Obi to consolidate the momentum generated by this visit. By aligning himself with the PDP and engaging in meaningful discussions with its leadership, he has the opportunity to redefine his political narrative and amplify his impact on the national stage. “Unlike former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who appears to have lost focus and is attempting to fight from the periphery, Peter Obi has the chance to be at the forefront of a transformative political movement that prioritizes unity and progress. “Governor Bala Mohammed’s advocacy for unity and politics without bitterness is a timely reminder of the values that should guide Nigeria’s political landscape. As our nation grapples with complex challenges, the emphasis on mutual respect, tolerance, and collective responsibility is essential for creating an environment conducive to growth and development. “Leaders must heed this call, recognizing that Nigeria's strength lies in its diversity and the capacity of its people to unite for a common purpose. Only through such unity can Nigeria hope to realize its full potential and build a brighter future for all its citizens. “The Democracy Watch Initiative celebrates Peter Obi's strategic engagement with Governor Bala Mohammed and the Peoples Democratic Party. We look forward to seeing how this collaboration will unfold and contribute to the greater good of Nigeria. We encourage all political leaders to embrace dialogue, foster inclusivity, and work together towards the common goal of national advancement.” |
The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement for the South-South geopolitical zone, Hon. Gift Johnbull, has announced that efforts are underway to revamp economic transformation in the region. Johnbull disclosed this in Abuja, during an interactive session with journalists under the auspices of the South-South Journalists Forum for Good Governance, SSFGG, she emphasized that persistent unrest and vandalism have caused more harm than good, leading to missed opportunities for development. She also emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, arguing that the ongoing agitation and acts of vandalism have severely tarnished the region’s reputation. She noted that 100,000 farmers are set to be engaged in this wet season farming, as the government collaborates with farmer cooperative societies to gather accurate data on genuine farmers across the six South-South states, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers. Gift Johnbull highlighted the immense agricultural potential of the region, noting that its fertile land can support large-scale farming, yielding high volumes of crops, and generating significant profits for farmers. Johnbull said: “The President is very interested in food security. We targeted a couple of priority crops based on our research, our engagement in the time past, and we picked cassava, rice, cocoa, oil palm, maize, and aquaculture across the region. “There are several local governments that are strong in certain priority crops unlike the other ones, but, and then we are adding plantain and yam to it but the sixth priority agricultural commodity that I mentioned is what we are actually targeting for now. “We are looking at 100,000 smallholder farmers because smallholder farmers actually make the last chunk in the agricultural sector right now. If you gather 100,000 smallholder farmers and you aggregate all their produce, that is a large chunk going into the market, and when we have excess, of course, more supply than demand, the price will come down and then we can even have enough to process and start talking about exportation.” She expressed concern that rather than attracting investment in agriculture, infrastructure, and job creation, the South-South is predominantly seen as a crisis-prone region. This perception, she noted, has led to more crisis management efforts and stipends instead of sustainable economic interventions. She urged the people to move away from a dependency mindset and embrace opportunities for legitimate economic advancement. She added, “Vandalism and agitation are costing the region far more than they are benefiting it. When you mention the Niger Delta or the South-South, the first thing that comes to mind is vandalism and crisis. “Instead of sending tractors, seedlings, and industrial hubs to foster development, what we receive are peace talks, stipends, and crisis interventions. But tell me, how can a full-grown man survive on stipends? “We must discard the victim mentality. If people keep waiting for others to lift them up, they will miss out on opportunities that can create real wealth. “Success starts with a productive mindset. It’s like when you start thinking about yellow cars, you suddenly start noticing them everywhere. “Similarly, when you decide, I want to be successful, I want to prosper, I want to contribute to nation-building, you begin to see opportunities for legitimate income generation.” Johnbull revealed that the government has already held meetings with farmers and cooperative societies across the region. Plans are underway to organize them into clusters, ensuring better access to support programs, funding, and market linkages. She reiterated that the goal is to transform agriculture into a key driver of economic growth in the South-South, fostering food security, employment opportunities, and long-term regional stability.

By Lawal Sani Ningi In the intricacies of contemporary diplomacy, the role of a Minister of Foreign Affairs is undeniably crucial. This position demands not only political acumen but also a deep understanding of the socio-economic landscape of Bauchi State. Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria's current Minister of Foreign Affairs, embodies these qualities, emerging as a leader who is both visionary and grounded in the realities of his constituents. His recent initiatives, particularly the distribution of 7,000 bags of grains and the promotion of solar power, highlight his commitment to addressing urgent social issues while reinforcing his leadership credentials. Ambassador Tuggar’s approach to leadership is deeply rooted in his identity as a "son of the soil." His upbringing and life experiences have equipped him with a unique perspective on the aspirations and challenges of the people of Bauchi State. This connection to his community is not merely sentimental; it informs his policies and initiatives, ensuring they resonate with the realities faced by ordinary citizens. In a state grappling with food insecurity and poverty, Tuggar’s decision to distribute grains transcends the realm of charity. It is a strategic response to a pressing crisis, demonstrating his acute awareness of the needs of the populace. The distribution of 7,000 bags of grains is a testament to Tuggar’s ability to translate empathy into action. In a state where hunger remains a formidable adversary, such initiatives serve as a lifeline for many families. By addressing food insecurity directly, he fosters goodwill and trust among the people, reinforcing the notion that their government is attentive to their struggles. This initiative not only alleviates immediate hunger but also strengthens the social fabric, encouraging a sense of community and solidarity. Tuggar's initiatives, including the distribution of grains and motorcycles, underscore his commitment to addressing the pressing challenges faced by the people of Bauchi State. By aligning his efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, Tuggar not only provides immediate relief but also lays the foundation for sustainable economic growth and community empowerment. His leadership is characterized by empathy, integrity, and a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes the needs of the people. In the context of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, Tuggar’s actions reflect a broader commitment to uplifting the Nigerian populace through practical solutions. The agenda focuses on addressing the immediate needs of citizens while laying the groundwork for long-term development. By combining humanitarian efforts, such as grain distribution, with economic empowerment initiatives like motorcycle distribution, Tuggar exemplifies a holistic approach to governance. Moreover, the strategic distribution of motorcycles can enhance community cohesion. When individuals within a community have access to transportation, they are more likely to engage with one another, collaborate on projects, and support local initiatives. This sense of unity is crucial in a state where social fragmentation can hinder progress. Tuggar’s initiatives, therefore, are not merely about providing material goods; they are about nurturing a sense of community and shared purpose among the people of Bauchi State. Furthermore, Tuggar’s initiatives highlight the importance of leadership that is responsive to the needs of the people. In a political landscape often characterized by disillusionment and mistrust, Tuggar’s hands-on approach fosters a renewed sense of hope and engagement among the constituents of Bauchi State. His ability to listen to the concerns of the people and translate them into actionable policies is a hallmark of effective leadership. It demonstrates that political leaders can indeed be catalysts for positive change when they prioritize the welfare of their constituents over personal or partisan interests. Tuggar’s approach to leadership is rooted in credibility and integrity. His background in diplomacy and international relations equips him with the skills to navigate complex political landscapes, yet it is his genuine concern for the welfare of his people that truly sets him apart. By addressing immediate needs through tangible actions, he reinforces the belief that political leaders can and should be agents of positive change. In addition to his humanitarian efforts, Ambassador Tuggar is also an advocate for sustainable energy solutions. The promotion of solar power aligns with global trends toward renewable energy and reflects a forward-thinking approach to governance. By integrating solar power into his initiatives, he not only addresses the immediate energy needs of his constituents but also contributes to the broader goal of environmental sustainability. This dual focus on social welfare and ecological responsibility is a hallmark of effective leadership in the 21st century. In Bauchi State, where reliable electricity is still a distant dream for many, the solar power initiative emerges as a beacon of hope. The state, endowed with abundant sunlight, is uniquely positioned to harness solar energy, making it a pivotal player in the renewable energy landscape of Nigeria. As an advocate for this transformative shift, Tuggar is not only championing the cause of solar energy but is also strategically positioning Bauchi State as a leader in the region's energy transition. This initiative promises to enhance the quality of life for millions of citizens while simultaneously attracting investments that could bolster the economy and elevate Bauchi State's status on the national stage. Access to reliable electricity is a pressing challenge in Bauchi State, where millions of citizens still rely on erratic power supply or have no access to electricity at all. This lack of reliable energy hampers economic growth, stifles innovation, and limits the overall quality of life. By promoting solar power, Tuggar is addressing this critical issue head-on. Solar energy, being renewable and sustainable, offers a viable solution to the state’s energy crisis. It provides an opportunity for decentralized power generation, allowing communities in remote areas to access electricity without the need for extensive infrastructure that is often lacking in the state. However, the path to realizing this vision is not without its challenges. Tuggar's initiative has faced criticism from some political opportunists who may lack a comprehensive understanding of solar energy and its benefits. These detractors often resort to backward thinking, failing to recognize the transformative potential of renewable energy. Their criticisms, rooted in ignorance, highlight the need for greater public awareness and education about the advantages of solar power and alternative energy sources. Yusuf Tuggar’s political acumen is evident in his ability to unite diverse groups around common goals. His initiatives, such as the grain distribution and solar power projects, resonate with various stakeholders, from local farmers to international partners. This capacity to bridge divides and foster collaboration is a testament to his skills as a negotiator and leader. He understands that effective governance requires not only policy knowledge but also the ability to inspire and mobilize communities toward shared objectives. Tuggar's vision extends beyond mere energy provision; it aims to foster innovation and attract potential investments in the renewable energy sector. By positioning Bauchi State as a leader in solar energy, he is not just advocating for a shift in energy policy but is also creating an environment conducive to technological advancements and economic opportunities. The influx of investments in solar technology and infrastructure can catalyze job creation, stimulate local economies, and empower communities. This holistic approach not only addresses the immediate need for electricity but also lays the groundwork for sustainable development in Bauchi State. The significance of the solar power initiative is further underscored by its potential to transform the socio-economic landscape of the region. By providing reliable energy, Tuggar is not only enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families but also enabling businesses to thrive. The increased availability of electricity can lead to the establishment of small and medium enterprises, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. As businesses grow and create jobs, the economic fabric of Bauchi State will become more resilient, reducing dependency on external aid and fostering self-sufficiency. In conclusion, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar's leadership in Bauchi State exemplifies the profound impact that a Minister of Foreign Affairs can have on local communities. Through his initiatives in food distribution and renewable energy promotion, he is addressing pressing social issues while laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and prosperous future. His commitment to the welfare of his constituents, combined with a visionary approach to governance, positions him as a transformative leader in Bauchi State's journey toward socio-economic development. As he continues to champion these initiatives, the people of Bauchi State can look forward to a brighter future, one marked by resilience, innovation, and community empowerment. |
