The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), on Friday, expressed deep concern over the growing spread of fabricated news and disinformation across Nigeria possessing a serious threat to national security and social cohesion. The group accused what it described as “malicious elements and unpatriotic citizens” of deliberately manufacturing and disseminating false information aimed at creating distrust between citizens and the government, while fueling instability across the country. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, the organization said the deliberate distortion of facts and outright fabrication of stories had moved beyond political propaganda and now constitutes a direct attack on Nigeria’s peace, unity and security. According to GMI, Nigeria is already grappling with multiple security challenges and cannot afford additional threats from individuals who exploit digital platforms to spread misinformation capable of triggering violence and social unrest. Musa said: “As a grassroots organization rooted in the realities of ordinary Nigerians, we are compelled to speak out. The deliberate twisting of facts and the outright fabrication of stories have reached a level that can no longer be ignored. “Nigeria is currently dealing with serious security challenges on multiple fronts, and we cannot allow digital saboteurs to push the nation into avoidable crises through lies. “What we are seeing today is no longer just the casual sharing of unverified rumors on WhatsApp. Mischief-makers and desperate actors are now using advanced technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to forge official documents, clone the voices of top government officials, and create deepfake videos of religious and regional leaders. “These manipulated videos and audios are intentionally created in local languages to deceive the public, create panic, and trigger spontaneous violence in our communities. When people can no longer distinguish between a genuine statement from security agencies and a fabricated clip designed to cause trouble, our collective safety is in extreme danger. "Nigeria is a diverse nation, and our unity is something we must guard jealously. When people sit in the comfort of their rooms and invent stories about ethnic attacks, military compromises, or artificial economic failure, they are not exercising freedom of speech. This is clear sabotage against the peace and survival of our country." The group identified three major areas where fake news and disinformation are causing significant harm. GMI said the circulation of false military casualty figures, doctored videos of security operations and misleading narratives about the armed forces undermine the morale of troops engaged in frontline operations against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements. Musa added, “The Dangerous Impact on Security Operations and National Unity The real-world damage caused by this disinformation enterprise is already costing lives and destroying properties. GMI points out three critical areas where these fabrications are harming the country: “The constant spread of fake military casualty figures, doctored videos of tactical retreats, and false narratives of complicity among our troops only serves to demoralize the brave men and women on the frontline. It gives undue confidence to bandits, insurgents, and criminals. “In a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society like ours, an engineered lie can spark immediate reprisal attacks. We see a calculated attempt by online actors to pit the North against the South, and Christians against Muslims, simply to drive traffic, gain followers, or satisfy political sponsors. “While every Nigerian has the constitutional right to criticize public policies and demand accountability, there is a clear line between constructive opposition and deliberate subversion. Forging official circulars, creating fake CBN policies, and inventing corruption stories to provoke the public into violent protests will only lead to anarchy. “We cannot continue to fold our arms and watch digital mercenaries destroy the fabric of our society. The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative calls for immediate action from all quarters: “Before you click "share" or "forward" on any sensitive security or political news, ask yourself if it is from a verified, credible mainstream media house. If you share a video that ends up causing a riot or loss of life in another part of the country, you are just as guilty as the rioters.” GMI also called on law enforcement and security agencies to strengthen the enforcement of existing cybercrime laws and ensure that individuals operating fake news networks are identified irrespective of their social status, political affiliation, or geographical location. The organization further urged major social media companies, including Meta, X, and TikTok, to improve their monitoring systems and swiftly remove harmful content, particularly misinformation translated into local Nigerian languages that could incite violence. The group emphasized that while economic setbacks can be overcome through policy reforms and national effort, the consequences of ethnic and religious conflicts fueled by disinformation could have far-reaching and lasting effects on the country's unity. “The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative reminds all citizens that a damaged economy can be repaired, but a nation torn apart by ethnic and religious violence fueled by digital lies is difficult to rebuild. We must choose patriotism over viral engagement. Let us protect Nigeria’s security by refusing to be tools for spreading falsehood,“ he added. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has accused the Federal Government of applying double standards in its response to recent school abductions in Oyo and Borno states, alleging unequal treatment of victims based on their geographical location. The group, while condemning the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in both states, described the incidents as evidence of the worsening security situation in the country and a growing inability of the government to adequately protect citizens. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition expressed concern over what it termed a pattern of selective outrage, unequal attention and discriminatory security responses to tragedies occurring in different parts of Nigeria. According to the group, about 46 schoolchildren and teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Charanchi said: “The incident rightly triggered national outrage and attracted immediate attention from the Federal Government. However, on the very same day, another group of terrorists abducted 42 pupils from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. “Yet, while the Oyo incident received swift federal sympathy, high-level visits and urgent security assurances, the victims and communities in Borno have largely been abandoned to silence and neglect. “Following the Oyo abduction, the Federal Government reportedly dispatched a powerful delegation including the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Staff to the President. The Presidnet also approved the recruitment of 1000 forest guards for affected communities in Oyo State as part of immediate intervention measures. “But what exactly has been done for the traumatised communities in Borno? Where are the emergency security deployments? Where are the high-powered federal delegations? Where are the special interventions and assurances for grieving Northern communities that have suffered repeated terrorist attacks, mass kidnappings and killings for years? “The Coalition refuses to accept a Nigeria where the value of human lives is determined by geography, politics or proximity to power. While we acknowledge efforts to respond swiftly to the abduction in Oyo State, we strongly insist that the same level of urgency, outrage, attention and coordinated security response must also be extended to victims of Borno abduction. “Nigeria must never operate a selective security system where some victims receive rapid intervention while others are abandoned to their fate simply because of geography.” The coalition insisted that every Nigerian life should carry equal value regardless of location, ethnicity or political considerations. The group further maintained that every Nigerian child deserves equal protection and sympathy from the government, irrespective of whether they reside in Oyo, Borno, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto or Kebbi states. The coalition urged the Federal Government to immediately intensify rescue efforts for victims in both Oyo and Borno states and adopt a more comprehensive security strategy to tackle terrorism and banditry nationwide. He added, “Nigerians are therefore justified in asking difficult questions: Would the federal response have been this swift and aggressive if the victims in Oyo were in a remote Northern community? Is the extraordinary attention being given to Oyo connected to the fact that the President comes from the South-West while repeated atrocities in Northern Nigeria are gradually becoming normalised? “These are painful questions many citizens are already asking because of the obvious disparity in official responses. The Coalition wishes to make it absolutely clear that we condemn every act of terrorism, kidnapping and violence anywhere in Nigeria. We are not calling for less attention to Oyo State. Rather, we are demanding equal seriousness, equal empathy and equal national response for all victims across the federation. “For years, Northern communities have buried thousands of innocent citizens while schools were destroyed, villages overrun and children kidnapped repeatedly with little sustained national outrage or coordinated federal action. It is rather unfortunate that the mass school abduction has now spread across the country because the government failed to decisively confront these criminal networks when it had the opportunity. “The CNG contend that the continued inconsistency in security responses risks deepening public frustration and weakening national unity. Every Nigerian life matters equally. We cannot build a united country where some communities receive immediate federal intervention while others are abandoned to perpetual suffering. “The government must stop operating a selective security system. Nigerians in Borno, Kaduna, Zamfara, Plateau, Benue, Kebbi and Sokoto deserve the same urgency, empathy and protection being extended to Oyo State.” The coalition urged the Federal Government to immediately intensify rescue efforts for victims in both Oyo and Borno states and adopt a more comprehensive security strategy to tackle terrorism and banditry nationwide. It also called for stronger protection of schools and rural communities, aggressive intelligence-led operations against terrorist enclaves and long-term measures aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the country. “The blood of innocent Nigerian children must never become a political calculation. Nigeria cannot continue normalising mass abductions while citizens lose confidence in the ability and willingness of the government to protect them equally. “We demand accountability, justice and equal treatment for all so as to entrench peace and security is fully restored across the country. The blood of innocent Nigerians will continue to haunt both the perpetrators and those entrusted with securing the country who have repeatedly failed to rise to the challenge.” |
By Abdulkarim Ibrahim In a country where stories of public officials enriching themselves at the expense of the people often dominate the headlines, acts of honesty have become so rare that they immediately capture public attention. Yet, every now and then, an individual emerges to remind us that integrity is still alive in public service. Such was the case when the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, Malam Mustapha Muhammad, returned an excess payment of SR6,000, about N2.4 million that was mistakenly paid to him during the distribution of allowances for journalists covering the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. The story itself is simple. An administrative error resulted in Mustapha receiving more money than he was entitled to. Many people might have overlooked the mistake or convinced themselves that it was not their responsibility to correct it. But Mustapha chose a different path. Upon discovering the error, he immediately returned the money so that the records could be corrected and other beneficiaries could receive what was rightfully theirs. What makes the gesture noteworthy is not merely the amount involved but the principle behind it. At a time when society is desperately searching for examples of ethical leadership, Mustapha demonstrated that public trust is built through everyday decisions. He understood that the money was not his and that keeping it would deny others their legitimate entitlements. His decision reflected a deep sense of responsibility and respect for public trust. For those who know him personally, however, the action came as no surprise. As someone who has known Mustapha Muhammad since our university days, I can testify that honesty has always been one of his defining qualities. He was hardworking, disciplined, and deeply committed to doing things the right way. Even in the simplest situations, he had little tolerance for cheating or cutting corners. During examinations and academic activities, he believed strongly that success should be earned through effort rather than manipulation. While many students sought shortcuts, Mustapha remained steadfast in his conviction that integrity was worth more than any temporary advantage. Looking back today, it is clear that the values he displayed as a student are the same values guiding his conduct in public office. My experience is unlikely to be unique. I strongly believe that many of those who worked closely with Mustapha Muhammad during his professional journey, including his time with the BBC and Bloomberg as an international journalist, would have similar stories to tell about his character. Integrity is often most visible not in public ceremonies but in daily interactions, professional conduct and the choices people make when faced with ethical dilemmas. Those who shared newsrooms, assignments and deadlines with him would probably attest to the same qualities of honesty, professionalism, fairness and accountability that have now been publicly demonstrated during the Hajj operation. Such consistency across different stages of life and career is what distinguishes genuine character from occasional acts of virtue. Character, after all, is not built overnight. It is cultivated over years through consistent choices and adherence to principles. The decision to return SR6,000 in Saudi Arabia was not an extraordinary departure from Mustapha's character; it was a continuation of the uprightness that those who have known him for years have always recognized. His action also carries an important lesson for public officials across Nigeria. Every day, individuals entrusted with public responsibilities face decisions that test their integrity. Some involve millions of naira; others involve much less. Yet the true measure of honesty is not determined by the amount at stake but by the willingness to do what is right even when nobody is watching. Public office is a trust, and that trust can only be preserved when officials place ethics above personal gain. The commendation from the Amirul Hajj and Emir of Gaya, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, was therefore both appropriate and deserved. By describing the gesture as an example of fairness, integrity and responsibility, the Emir captured what many observers felt. More importantly, he highlighted the significance of celebrating public servants who choose honesty when they could easily have chosen otherwise. Beyond commendation, however, this moment presents an opportunity for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Every administration seeks to promote accountability, transparency and good governance. But values become meaningful only when they are rewarded and institutionalized. Governor Yusuf has consistently projected an image of a people-oriented administration committed to reform. Recognizing Mustapha Muhammad's conduct would reinforce that commitment and send a powerful message throughout the public service. Such recognition need not necessarily be monetary. A formal commendation, an award for integrity, or a public acknowledgment would be enough to demonstrate that honesty is valued within the administration. More importantly, it would encourage other public servants to emulate similar conduct. When ethical behaviour is celebrated, it inspires others to uphold the same standards. Indeed, governments often focus on punishing wrongdoing, which is necessary. But rewarding integrity is equally important. Recognition creates role models, strengthens institutional values and helps build a culture where honesty becomes the norm rather than the exception. Public servants who see integrity rewarded are more likely to resist temptations and uphold the principles expected of them. Ultimately, this story is not about SR6,000 or N2.4 million. It is about character. It is about choosing conscience over convenience. It is about demonstrating that integrity remains possible in public life. In returning money that was never his, Mustapha Muhammad has offered a powerful lesson in leadership and accountability. At a time when many Nigerians are yearning for public officials they can trust, his action stands as a reminder that good governance begins with personal integrity. Kano State should celebrate this example and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should seize the moment to recognize and encourage such conduct. For when honesty is rewarded, society benefits; when integrity is celebrated, institutions grow stronger; and when public servants like Mustapha Muhammad are acknowledged, a standard is set for others to follow. The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative, on Monday, congratulated contestants, party faithful and organizers involved in the recently concluded political primaries across Nigeria, describing the exercise as a reflection of growing civic consciousness ahead of the 2027 general elections. The organization particularly commended the adoption and implementation of the Option A4 voting model during the primaries. In a statement by the National Coordinator of GMI, Samaila Musa, the organization praised the peaceful conduct of the primaries and the massive turnout of citizens at the grassroots level. Musa said the orderly participation of Nigerians demonstrated a deep desire among citizens to actively shape the leadership of the country through democratic means. He said: “As a non-partisan organization dedicated to the advancement of grassroots democracy and good governance, GMI believes in commending political maturity, transparency, and exemplary leadership wherever it is demonstrated. “The massive, orderly turnout of citizens at the grassroots level underscores a growing civic consciousness and a deep-seated desire among Nigerians to actively shape the leadership of their country ahead of the 2027 general elections. “The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative highly commends the adoption and execution of the Option A4 voting model during these primaries. The orderliness, transparency, and absolute peace witnessed at the voting centers across the states prove that when political systems empower ordinary citizens with a direct, unambiguous stake in choosing leaders, democratic integrity thrives. “By eliminating ambiguity and ensuring visible accountability, this model set an encouraging standard for internal party democracy in Nigeria, a feat that GMI hopes to see replicated across the entire political spectrum.” The organization also congratulated candidates who emerged victorious in various categories, including State Assembly, National Assembly, governorship and presidential primaries. He described State Assembly candidates as the foundation for grassroots legislation and community development, while National Assembly candidates were tasked with shaping national policies and protecting federal interests. The group further noted that governorship candidates would bear responsibility for driving sub-national development, while the presidential flagbearer would carry the burden of articulating a national vision for progress and unity. He added, “GMI reminds all successful candidates that their emergence is not merely a political victory, but a profound social contract and a mandate to deliver excellence, equity, and genuine dividends of democracy to the Nigerian people. “While we recognize the success of this internal democratic exercise, the Grassroots Mobilization Initiative emphasizes that the ultimate test of our democracy lies in the general elections. “As a nationwide structure committed to voter education and civic mobilization, GMI is actively working across every ward and local government area to ensure high voter turnout, peaceful participation, and the election of credible leaders across all party lines in 2027. "Our principle at GMI has always been clear: we are not partisan, but we are fiercely committed to good governance and democratic excellence. When a political process respects the voice of the grassroots, it deserves recognition. We look forward to a much wider, historic nationwide celebration of democratic success after the 2027 general elections.” The organization also urged contestants who failed to secure party tickets to demonstrate sportsmanship and continue contributing to national peace and development. |

The Students Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG-SW), has paid glowing tribute to late activist, journalist, and spokesman of the Coalition of Northern Groups, Abdulazeez Suleiman, describing him as one of the most fearless voices for social justice and the rights of ordinary Nigerians. The group noted that throughout his public engagements, the late activist never shied away from speaking truth to power, stressing that he openly condemned extrajudicial killings and challenged what it described as attempts to silence the North amid widespread suffering. In a statement by the National Coordinator of CNG-SW, Hassan Adamu, the group said it received the news of Suleiman’s death with a heavy heart, noting that his passing marked a huge loss to Northern Nigeria and the country at large. The students’ body described the late Suleiman as more than an activist, saying he served as “a conscience in public discourse, uncompromising in truth, measured in tone, and relentless in demanding accountability from those in power.” According to the statement, Suleiman, who was also spokesperson of the Coalition of Northern Groups and the Northern Elders Forum, consistently articulated the pain, fears, and aspirations of millions of Northern Nigerians affected by insecurity, poverty, and poor governance. Adamu said: “As spokesman and public face of the CNG, he articulated the pain, fear, and aspirations of millions living under the weight of insecurity, poverty, and misgovernance. “From the boardroom to the press conference, Abdulazeez never shied away from speaking truth to power. He warned when the state faltered, he condemned extrajudicial killings, and he challenged the narrative that the North must remain silent in the face of suffering. “He was at the forefront when the CNG called for citizens to protect themselves where the state failed, and he consistently argued that insecurity in the North was not inevitable, but a product of failed policy and misplaced priorities. “His work extended beyond protests and press releases. As a journalist, he brought credibility, clarity, and ethical rigor to public communication. It was this reputation that led to his recent appointment as spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, a role CNG leaders said was “a testament to his extensive experience in credible, fearless, selfless, and ethical journalism”. “Comrade Abdulazeez understood that activism without empathy is noise. He spoke for displaced farmers in Borno, for pastoralists killed in Nasarawa, and for families in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Niger burying loved ones killed by bandits.” According to the group, the late activist believed the North should not be reduced to Nigeria’s problem and consistently advocated justice, accountability, and better leadership for future generations. The group extended condolences to the Chairman of the CNG Board of Trustees, Nastura Ashir Shariff, the National Coordinator of the mainstream CNG, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, members of the CNG family, the Zazzau Emirate, and the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli. Adamu added: “Abdulazeez Suleiman leaves behind a legacy of courage, intellectual honesty, and an unyielding belief that Nigeria can be better. He reminded us that to love the North, and Nigeria, is to demand more from its leaders and more for its people. “To the Coalition of Northern Groups, the Northern Elders Forum, his colleagues in journalism, and the countless young activists he mentored - his absence will be felt deeply. But his voice will echo in every demand for justice, every call for accountability, and every young person who refuses to be silent. “Our Condolences to the Chairman Board of Trustee, Dr. Nastura Ashir Shariff, the National Coordinator of the Mainstream, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charachi, his dynamic team and the entire CNG family. His immediate family members, the Emir of Zazzau HRH. Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, the peace loving people of Zazzau Emirate, Northern Elders forum and good people of Nigeria. “May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family, comrades, and all who loved him the strength to bear this loss.” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has announced the death of its pioneer spokesperson and founding member, Alhaji Suleiman Abdulazeez, saying that his passing was a major loss to Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole. The coalition noted that Abdulazeez played significant roles in shaping public discourse as pioneer spokesperson of the CNG and former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum. In a statement issued by the National Coordinator of the coalition, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group expressed profound grief over the death of Abdulazeez, who it described as a courageous advocate for justice, education, equity and societal reform. According to the statement, the late Abdulazeez remained committed to the advancement of Northern Nigeria and the unity of the country until his final moments, serving as a voice for the oppressed and a defender of truth. The CNG disclosed that Abdulazeez is survived by two wives, children, relatives, associates, and admirers across the country. Charanchi said: “As pioneer spokesperson of the CNG and former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, he played historic roles in shaping public discourse on issues affecting the North and Nigeria at large. Through wisdom, courage, and uncommon patriotism, he dedicated his life to confronting injustice, illiteracy, insecurity, and social inequality. “The late Abdulazeez was widely respected for his humility, simplicity, honesty, and selfless lifestyle despite his towering influence and vast contributions to society. He believed strongly that education and social consciousness were critical tools for liberating Northern Nigeria from poverty, ignorance, and underdevelopment.” The group also recalled his dedication to the protection of Northern interests and the preservation of the values of the Zazzau Emirate. The CNG recalls with pride his tireless commitment to the protection of Northern interests, the preservation of the values of the revered Zazzau Emirate, and his continuous efforts toward building a more just and responsible society. He added, “His passing has created a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill. Northern Nigeria has lost one of its most courageous public voices, finest intellectuals, and committed patriots. “While mourning this painful loss, the CNG celebrates a life dedicated to sacrifice, integrity, humanity, and service to society. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Northerners and Nigerians committed to justice and societal progress. “He is survived by two wives, many children, relatives, friends, associates, and countless admirers across Nigeria. The Coalition of Northern Groups extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, associates, the people of the Zazzau Emirate, members of the Northern Elders Forum, and all Nigerians affected by this monumental loss. “We pray to Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds abundantly, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.” |
The Concerned Nigerians for Democratic Sustainability (CNCDS), has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to embrace statesmanship rather than pursue what it described as another “serial presidential candidacy” ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group said Nigeria has reached a critical democratic moment where difficult conversations about leadership transition, generational renewal, and the future of opposition politics must be openly addressed. In a statement issued by the Coordinator of CNCDS, Ambassador Mukhtar Garba, the organisation argued that Atiku Abubakar must decide whether he wants to be remembered as a statesman who helped rebuild Nigeria’s democracy or as a perennial presidential aspirant whose repeated ambitions have weakened opposition coalitions. According to the group, Atiku’s reported preparation for what could become his seventh presidential contest reflects a broader problem within Nigeria’s political system, where older political figures continue to dominate the national space at the expense of younger leadership. He said: “At 79 years old and reportedly preparing for what would be his seventh presidential contest, Atiku represents not merely an individual ambition but a troubling symbol of Nigeria’s refusal to allow political transition, institutional growth, and leadership succession within the opposition space. “While every Nigerian has a constitutional right to seek office, no democracy can sustainably develop when the same political figures dominate the national stage for decades, repeatedly placing personal aspiration above coalition stability, party cohesion, and the emergence of younger leadership. “The CNCDS is deeply disturbed that each electoral cycle involving Atiku Abubakar has followed a familiar and destructive pattern that opposition coalitions emerge with hope and momentum; consultations begin around national rescue and democratic alternatives; then internal tensions, dominance struggles, personality clashes, and fragmentation follow closely behind his presidential calculations. “This pattern did not begin today. Nigerians witnessed it within the PDP before the 2023 elections, where unresolved ambition and internal divisions fatally weakened the opposition’s ability to present a united challenge. Rather than learning from that costly failure, the same cycle is once again threatening coalition efforts ahead of 2027. “At a period when Nigerians are enduring severe economic hardship, rising insecurity, unemployment, inflation, mass poverty, and collapsing public confidence in governance, the opposition should be focused on unity, strategic coordination, and credible national alternatives, not another endless debate around one man’s lifelong presidential pursuit. “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and similar coalition efforts were expected to become broad national platforms capable of mobilising Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and generational lines.” The organisation stressed that Nigeria urgently requires generational political renewal, arguing that millions of young Nigerians who were not yet born when Atiku first contested for power are now facing unemployment, insecurity, and political disillusionment. Garba warned that continued domination of the political space by older politicians risks alienating younger citizens and delaying the emergence of fresh leadership with modern ideas. He that Atiku is uniquely positioned to play a more historic role as a mentor, consensus builder, and elder statesman capable of supporting younger leaders rather than continuously contesting for office himself. Garba added, “The CNCDS believes Atiku Abubakar is uniquely positioned at this stage of his life and political journey to play a historic fatherly role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, as a mentor, bridge-builder, consensus mobiliser, and elder statesman capable of supporting younger leaders rather than perpetually overshadowing them. “History is kinder to leaders who know when to guide from the front and when to step aside for the next generation. Nigeria does not merely need another candidate. Nigeria needs democratic renewal, institutional stability, and a new political culture driven by ideas, competence, inclusion, sacrifice, and national purpose. “We therefore urge opposition stakeholders, particularly within Northern Nigeria, to resist the dangerous culture of personality politics and instead prioritise coalition-building, strategic discipline, and generational transition ahead of the 2027 elections. “The future of over 200 million Nigerians cannot continue to revolve around the unending ambition of a shrinking political class while the nation sinks deeper into hardship and instability. This is the time for statesmanship. Not another serial candidacy.” |
The Student Wing of the Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), comprising student union leaders, campus delegates, and youth stakeholders from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, has passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The group described NELFUND as a transparent and life-changing intervention that has restored hope to thousands of indigent students across Northern Nigeria and the country at large. The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency joint congress held in Abuja on Sunday, May 17, 2026, to evaluate national issues affecting northern students, review the implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, and discuss security challenges confronting academic institutions in the region. The communiqué was jointly signed by the National Coordinator of the Student Wing of NYF, Comrade Ibrahim Bello, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Hauwa Abdulaziz. According to the congress, the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act introduced under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu has reshaped access to higher education by removing financial barriers that previously hindered students from pursuing academic ambitions. The communiqué said: “We declare that NELFUND has broken long-standing bureaucratic barriers to become a transparent, life-saving reality, ensuring that financial lack is no longer a death sentence for academic dreams in the North and Nigeria at large. “Transforming the Lives of Indigent Students: Most significantly, the Congress highlights the profound, life-changing impact this scheme has had on thousands of indigent students across the North. By stepping in where poverty would have forced brilliant minds out of school, NELFUND has restored dignity to the less privileged and brought immense psychological and financial relief to countless struggling families who previously had no hope of funding higher education. “Unprecedented Milestones: The Congress applauds the successful registration and application of over 1.3 million Nigerian students on the NELFUND portal, demonstrating overwhelming youth confidence in the integrity of the scheme. “Colossal Financial Commitment: We acknowledge the strategic disbursement of over ₦161.97 billion so far in 2026. This includes ₦89.94 billion paid directly to public tertiary institutions to cover 100% of institutional charges, liberating students from the constant threat of being barred from exams. “Direct Student Upkeep: Furthermore, ₦72.03 billion has been funneled directly into students’ personal bank accounts as a monthly ₦20,000 upkeep stipend, drastically easing the severe burdens of feeding, books, and accommodation. “Geographical and Tribal Equity: The Student Wing praises the administration for ensuring that access to the loan remains entirely merit-based and digitalized. It cuts across all faiths, tribes, and geographical zones without requiring political patronage or "connections," liberating hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Northern students from the threat of dropping out. “Long-Term Future Utility: We view this initiative as Nigeria’s single greatest investment in human capital. By structuring a zero-interest model and deferring repayment until two years post-NYSC (and strictly upon securing employment), the President has shown rare, unparalleled empathy for the economic realities of the Nigerian youth, effectively halting the "brain drain" and laying the bedrock for national growth.” The congress passed what it described as a “resounding vote of confidence” on President Tinubu and the management of NELFUND led by Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr. While commending the federal government for the education loan initiative, the students also raised concerns over insecurity affecting campuses across Northern Nigeria. The congress appealed to President Tinubu to intensify security efforts around tertiary institutions vulnerable to attacks by bandits and kidnappers. “We urgently appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify security efforts across Northern campuses, which remain vulnerable to threats from bandits and kidnappers. “Specifically, we call for the aggressive funding of the Safe Schools Initiative, alongside the deployment of specialized, round-the-clock military and police patrols around tertiary institutions, off-campus student residential zones, and critical transit routes to guarantee that students can utilize their loans in safety and peace. “The Student Wing of the Northern Youth Frontiers reiterates its unalloyed support for the Tinubu administration's historic drive to democratize higher education in Nigeria through NELFUND. “We urge all Northern students to continue to utilize the NELFUND portal (nelf.gov.ng) to secure their academic future while remaining law-abiding and vigilant partners in progress,” the communiqué added. |
The Congress of Northern Democrats (CND), has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of destabilising opposition politics and undermining Northern interests through what it described as his “perpetual presidential ambition.” The group alleged that the former vice president had consistently placed personal ambition above opposition unity, national renewal and generational transition. In a statement by the Chairman of the group, Comrade Musa Adamu, the CND expressed disappointment over reports that Atiku may be preparing for what would be his seventh attempt at the presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the statement, Nigerians are currently battling hunger, insecurity, inflation, unemployment and worsening economic hardship, conditions which require opposition leaders to unite around a credible rescue agenda rather than engage in what it called endless political calculations. Adamu said: “At a time when millions of Nigerians are crushed by hunger, insecurity, unemployment, inflation, and deepening economic despair, the opposition ought to be rallying around a coherent national rescue agenda. “Instead, what Nigerians continue to witness is the recycling of old political ambitions, elite ego battles, and endless power calculations headed by Atiku which is disconnected from the suffering of ordinary citizens. “The North, in particular, must now ask difficult but necessary questions: What exactly has Atiku Abubakar’s endless presidential project achieved for the North or Nigeria? Since 1993, he has remained perpetually in pursuit of power, moving from one platform to another. “Dominating opposition arrangements, negotiating alliances, and positioning himself as indispensable, yet the opposition today is weaker, more fragmented, and more directionless than ever before courtesy of his greed and manipulation. “The CND regrets that Atiku has consistently demonstrated a troubling political pattern that whenever his personal ambition is not guaranteed, the stability and cohesion of opposition platforms become secondary. “Rather than serving as a bridge-builder capable of uniting aggrieved political blocs against a failing government, he has become a recurring source of division, distrust, and internal instability within the opposition space. “This is precisely why many Nigerians increasingly believe that the opposition’s inability to present a united front is indirectly a plus to the ruling APC. Whether intentionally or otherwise, the outcome remains that a fractured opposition will betray Nigerians to continue to suffer unprecedented hardship.” The CND also lamented what it described as the failure of coalition platforms such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to fully emerge as rallying points for Nigerians seeking alternatives to economic hardship and insecurity. He added, “It is deeply unfortunate that younger Nigerians with fresh ideas, modern political thinking, energy, and grassroots credibility continue to be denied meaningful opportunities because Atiku and his likes are unwilling to step aside. No democracy can grow when leadership circulation is constantly blocked by the same individuals for decades. “The CND states categorically that Northern Nigeria does not need another cycle of recycled ambition. The region today faces existential crises of terrorism, banditry, collapsing agriculture, poverty, mass youth unemployment, and widespread disillusionment. “What the North requires are courageous, visionary, and selfless leaders capable of building consensus, mentoring younger generations, and prioritising collective progress over personal political obsession. “We therefore call on Nigerians, particularly Northern youths, civil society groups, professionals, and political stakeholders, to reject personality-driven politics and begin the urgent task of rebuilding a principled opposition founded on competence, sacrifice, integrity, ideas, and generational renewal. “The North and Nigeria deserve leadership focused on solutions, not endless campaigns built around one man’s lifelong pursuit of power.” |
The faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Nafiu Bala Gombe has distanced itself from a statement allegedly issued by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi over claims that more than N800 billion was generated through deductions from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations for political purposes ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party said its attention had been drawn to a statement made by Abdullahi, who claimed to be the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, alleging that the funds were being mobilised for political activities in preparation for the next general elections. Reacting in a statement by the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the ADC, Christopher Okechukwu, the party categorically dissociated itself from both Abdullahi and the statement credited to him. Okechukwu reaffirmed its commitment to principled opposition politics and democratic values ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said: “The attention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has been drawn to a statement made by one Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi claiming to be the National publicity Secretary of the ADC. “The African Democratic Congress ( ADC) therefore wishes to categorically dissociate itself from a statement issued by Bolaji Abdullahi, purportedly on behalf of the party, in which he alleged that over N800 billion was generated through deductions from FAAC allocations for political purposes in preparation for the 2027 general elections. “The ADC hereby disowns both Mr. Abdullahi and the said statement, as neither reflects the position nor the official views of the party. As a political party founded on the principles of truth, the ADC, even as an opposition party, will not engage in baseless propaganda or dissemination of misleading information capable of deceiving Nigerians. “The ADC remains committed to playing the role of a principled opposition and will continue to challenge and criticize government policies and programmes which it considers detrimental to the interests and welfare of the Nigerian people. “The party’s objective is to win elections based on the credibility, popularity, and acceptability of its candidates and programmes, and not through the making of unsubstantiated or unfounded allegations against the government or public officials for the purpose of scoring cheap political points.” |

Hon. Bala Sani Kumo, Chief of Staff to the factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Nafiu Bala Gombe, has officially obtained the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest for the Gombe Central Senatorial District seat ahead of the 2027 General Elections. The development is seen by political observers as a significant step in the emerging political activities leading to the 2027 polls in Gombe State. Kumo’s decision to join the senatorial race has already begun generating excitement among supporters, party loyalists, and political stakeholders across the district, many of whom described his ambition as a move driven by commitment, courage, and a desire to provide quality representation for the people of Gombe Central. Supporters of the aspirant said his vision for inclusive leadership, unity, and people-oriented politics has continued to resonate with residents across the zone. Addressing journalist shortly after obtaining the nomination forms, Kumo said his aspiration was inspired by his belief that public office should be treated as a responsibility to serve the people rather than a personal privilege. Hon. Kumo explained that his decision to contest was aimed at contributing his skills and experience toward addressing challenges facing the people of the district while promoting accountability and transparency in governance. He said: “My objective for obtaining Gombe Central Senatorial District nomination form is because I believe that public office is a public trust, not a personal privilege. Our democracy works best when citizens with a genuine commitment to service step forward, offer themselves for scrutiny, and seek the mandate of the people. “I took this step to contribute my skills and experience to solving the problems facing our community, and to give constituents a clear choice rooted in accountability, transparency, and participation.” The ADC chieftain further expressed confidence in his ability to effectively represent the people of Gombe Central, stressing that his leadership philosophy is rooted in democratic principles and broad consultation with the electorate. “I believe I am the right person for this role because my approach is grounded in democratic principles. First, I am committed to listening more than speaking, to making decisions through consultation with the people I would represent, not behind closed doors. “Second, I have a track record of integrity and follow-through in my professional and community engagements, which I intend to bring to public office. Third, I understand that leadership in a democracy means being answerable to the electorate, respecting the rule of law, and using public resources solely for public good.” Hon. Kumo assured constituents that if elected, his priority would be to deliver measurable results while ensuring that all voices are fairly represented in governance and decision-making processes. “If given the mandate, my focus will be on delivering measurable results while ensuring that every voice has a fair hearing in the process,” he stated. Political analysts believe the entry of Hon. Bala Sani Kumo into the race could add fresh momentum to the political contest in Gombe Central, particularly within the ADC, as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections. They noted that issues such as youth empowerment, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and inclusive governance are expected to dominate political conversations in the district ahead of the polls. With the formal declaration now made through the acquisition of nomination forms, attention is expected to shift toward consultations, grassroots mobilization, and strategic engagements among political actors in Gombe Central Senatorial District.

The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative (GMI), has urged universities and political leaders to study the political trajectory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a blueprint for nation-building and governance. The group said Tinubu’s style of politics, which it described as a combination of strategic resilience, fiscal innovation, coalition-building and long-term planning, should become a major case study for students of political science and leadership studies in Nigeria. In a statement issued by the National Coordinator of GMI, Samaila Musa, the organization described President Tinubu as one of the most influential and polarising figures in contemporary Nigerian politics. He called for a paradigm shift in Nigerian political engagement According to the statement, Tinubu’s rise from a corporate accountant and pro-democracy activist to Nigeria’s 16th President represents what it called “a masterclass in political engineering and long-term networking.” GMI contends that for Nigeria to achieve lasting stability, both the academic community and the political elite must emulate the strategic depth that has defined Tinubu’s three-decade career. Musa said: "To understand where Nigeria is going, we must understand the man who spent thirty years mapping the route. We are calling on our universities to move beyond theory and analyze the practical mechanics of how Tinubu built power, maintained a regional stronghold, and eventually captured the center through the most successful opposition merger in African history." The first pillar, according to GMI, is resilience rooted in activism and democratic struggle. The organization recalled Tinubu’s involvement in the June 12 pro-democracy movement and his role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), noting that his political background demonstrates that leadership requires sacrifice and courage. As Governor, Tinubu transformed Lagos into Africa’s 5th largest economy by pioneering an aggressive Internal Revenue Generation (IRG) drive when federal funds were withheld. For the Political Class: This is a lesson in Fiscal Federalism. Leaders should stop relying solely on federal allocations and instead build sustainable, local economic engines. For Students: Analyze how talent recruitment, bringing in technocrats like Babatunde Fashola and Yemi Osinbajo, creates a "Political Family" that ensures governance continuity. The Architect of Strategic Unity The 2013 merger of the ACN, CPC, and ANPP to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the first time in Nigerian history an opposition alliance unseated an incumbent. Building bridges across ethnic and religious fault lines is the only way to achieve national scale. GMI appeals to politicians to prioritize strategic alliances over regional isolation. The "Emi Lokan" philosophy, beyond the slogan, represents a demand for political reciprocity and the "investment" in others. In office, his "Shock Therapy" reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and unification of exchange rates demonstrate the political will required to fix long-standing structural distortions. Why Universities and Leaders Must Study him GMI emphasizes that studying Tinubu is about understanding the mechanics of power. We call on Nigerian universities to incorporate these "Study Points" into their political science curricula”. Among the suggested study points, the organization highlighted Tinubu’s ability to remain politically relevant for more than 30 years in Nigeria’s volatile political environment. “Ultimately, the Grassroots Mobilization Initiative believes that the "Lion of Bourdillon" has provided a definitive map for political success. We call on the opposition to move away from acting in confusion or overheating the polity with reactionary rhetoric; instead, they should treat this career as a textbook on how politics is actually done. “True opposition is built on superior strategy and patient alliance-building, not on destabilizing the nation. It is time for all political actors to learn that power is a product of deliberate engineering, not accidental noise.” |
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has directed the immediate suspension of the sale and purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms pending the determination of a matter currently before the Federal High Court. The directive formed part of resolutions reached at the meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) held on Thursday in Abuja. In a communiqué after the meeting and signed by the ADC Board of Trustees Secretary, Mr. Rufus Akanmi, the party warned that anyone proceeding with the purchase of forms despite the directive would do so at their own risk. The Board also acknowledged and commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria over its judgment delivered on April 30, 2026, describing the ruling as a landmark contribution to constitutional democracy and the rule of law within the Nigerian political system. According to the communiqué: “All parties concerned are directed to immediately suspend the sale/purchase of such forms pending the final determination of the matter presently before the Federal High Court. “It is expressly stated that any person who proceeds to purchase the said forms does so at their own risk, and the African Democratic Congress shall not accept any liability or responsibility for consequences arising therefrom.” The BoT further called on members of the coalition within the party and the faction led by David Mark to put aside partisan interests and work with the leadership of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe in the interest of party unity. According to the communiqué, such collaboration is necessary to guarantee the party’s effective participation in the forthcoming general elections and ensure the emergence of credible candidates for elective positions at the state, local government and ward levels. “This unity is imperative to guarantee the African Democratic Congress’s full participation in the forthcoming general elections and to ensure the nomination and sponsorship of credible candidates for all elective positions at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels. “The Board reaffirms that, under the leadership of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, the African Democratic Congress remains steadfast in its commitment to the core values of equity, fairness, transparency, and justice for all members of the party, without bias or discrimination. “The Board hereby directs the National Working Committee to constitute Caretaker Committees in all States where the tenure of the current State Executive Committees has expired, to ensure continuity and stability in party administration at the grassroots level. “The Board further directs the National Working Committee to immediately initiate processes for the convening of a Mini National Convention. For the purpose of filling all vacant positions arising from the recent resignation of certain members of the NWC, in accordance with the Constitution of the party. “The attention of Senator David Mark and all esteemed members of the African Democratic Congress is formally drawn to the ongoing sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms,” the statement read. |
Northern stakeholders under the aegis of the Northern Nigerians Concern Stakeholders, on Monday, staged a peaceful protest in Abuja over growing concerns about the judiciary and the state of Nigeria’s democracy. The protesters converged at Unity Fountain before proceeding to the Federal High Court, where they addressed journalists and presented their demands. Speaking at the protest, the Convener of the group, Banki Shariff, said the demonstration was peaceful but aimed at drawing urgent national attention to what he described as serious threats to constitutional order. Shariff said: “We stand today at the steps of the Federal High Court, a symbol of justice and constitutional order, to sound a clear, urgent, and uncompromising alarm. This is a peaceful protest, but let there be no mistake: the issues before this nation are grave and history will not be kind to silence or complicity. “Courts must never be reduced to instruments of political engineering. The moment justice is manipulated, the nation itself is placed on trial.” He said the group’s message was directed at the judiciary and all constitutional actors, stressing that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on adherence to the rule of law rather than political pressure or convenience. He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to desist from any form of interference in the judiciary, warning that such actions could undermine public trust in democratic institutions. The group also raised concerns about what it described as attempts to weaken opposition voices, noting that democracy thrives on competition and dissent. Shariff added, “Democracy cannot function under intimidation, coercion, or calculated manipulation. Civic space, dissent, and lawful opposition are not inconveniences are the lifeblood of any functioning republic. “A government that seeks to weaken opposition betrays a lack of confidence in its own legitimacy. Democracy thrives on competition. Suppressing it is not strength, it is fear. The emerging pattern of actions points unmistakably toward a dangerous drift into authoritarianism. “If the courts lend legitimacy to such actions without strict adherence to due process and substantive justice, it will be seen as judicial endorsement of political exclusion. That path is dangerous, it risks disenfranchisement, deepens division, and could trigger widespread unrest.” They further urged the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to remain neutral and uphold the rule of law, warning against its alleged use for political purposes. Shariff also cautioned the judiciary against relying on technicalities or administrative actions that could weaken or delist political parties, particularly those with strong support in Northern Nigeria. The group warned that any perception of judicial bias could erode public confidence and lead to broader instability, saying that, “Where the judiciary is perceived as an extension of the executive, citizens inevitably lose faith in lawful remedies. When courts fail, the streets become the courtroom. “We are closely monitoring every action of this administration and every pronouncement of the courts. We will continue to defend democracy through lawful, peaceful, and constitutional means.” He added that the group remained resolute in its demands, urging authorities to uphold the Constitution, protect judicial independence, and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. |
A coalition of northern youth groups under the aegis of the Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring insecurity and poverty as national emergencies. The group said the declaration marks a critical step toward addressing the region’s longstanding challenges, noting that insecurity and poverty have remained major obstacles to peace, productivity, and development. In a statement issued by its Chairman, Sama Musa, the group described the President’s Workers’ Day address as bold, timely, and reflective of the realities faced by Nigerians, particularly in the North. Musa said: “The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) officially welcomes and commends the courageous and visionary Workers’ Day address delivered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “In a move that reflects the true yearnings of the grassroots, the President’s declaration of Insecurity and Poverty as National Emergencies marks a significant turning point in the "Renewed Hope" agenda. “As an organization representing the interests of the youth across the North, a region disproportionately affected by these dual scourges, the NYF views this declaration as a long-awaited recognition of the fundamental barriers to national productivity and peace. Musa said the group was particularly encouraged by the administration’s approach to community safety. He added, “We celebrate the recruitment of 45,000 young Nigerians into this initiative. This does not only bolster local security but also provides meaningful employment for our youth. “Agro-Rangers: The deployment of 10,000 NSCDC Agro-Rangers to 19 states is a masterstroke. For our brothers and sisters in the North, the ability to return to the farms without the fear of banditry is the only true way to ensure food security and economic stability. “The President’s acknowledgement that decent work cannot exist where wages are insufficient to feed a family" resonates deeply with our members. We commend: Social Safety Nets: The expansion of cash transfers to 15 million households and the lifting of 7.5 million Nigerians out of poverty. “Economic Buffers: The reintroduction of gratuity payments (effective January 2026) and the clearance of pension arrears, which provide much-needed dignity to our elders and future security for the youth. “Infrastructure as an Engine: The creation of 600,000 jobs through landmark projects like the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline—a project of immense strategic importance to the industrialization of Northern Nigeria. “Statement from the Northern Youth Frontiers: By declaring insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, President Tinubu has moved beyond mere rhetoric. He has identified the 'twin demons' that have held the North back for decades. “We are particularly impressed by the multi-dimensional approach, linking security directly to agriculture and infrastructure. When the farmer is safe, the nation is fed; when the youth are employed, the recruiters of insurgency find no candidates.” The group, however, urged the Federal Government to sustain the momentum by ensuring that initiatives such as the N200 billion MSME support fund and the National Agricultural Growth Scheme (NAGS-AP) are accessible to genuine small-scale entrepreneurs and farmers in remote communities. “The NYF remains committed to supporting this administration in its quest to ensure that "decent work" becomes a right for every Nigerian, rather than a privilege for a few. We call on all labor unions and stakeholders to heed the President's call for dialogue, ensuring that our national journey toward recovery is not disrupted. Nigeria is on the path to healing, and the Northern Youth stand ready to play their part,” he added. |
The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has dismissed as false and malicious a publication claiming that Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, expressed regret over his role in the party’s ongoing crisis and alleged that his life was in danger. The controversial report, attributed to one Ben Tanko and purportedly quoting Hon. Nafiu Bala through an alleged associate, Nafiu Umaru, had suggested that the embattled politician was reconsidering his position and facing security threats. In a statement issued by the Chief of Staff to the ADC National Chairman, Hon. Bala Sani Kumo, the party described the publication as a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation and integrity of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe. The party also debunked claims that Nafiu Bala’s life was under threat, describing such assertions as deliberate falsehoods aimed at generating public sympathy and undermining his legal position. Kumo said: “The attention of the National leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been drawn to a publication attributed to one Ben Tanko, titled “I Regret My Role in ADC Crisis, My Life Is in Danger”, purportedly quoting Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe through an alleged associate, Nafiu Umaru. “We state categorically that the said publication is false, malicious, and a calculated attempt to malign the character and integrity of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe. “Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe has not, at any time, granted an interview or authorized any statement expressing regret over his lawful pursuit of his constitutional right to lead the African Democratic Congress following the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu on 2nd July 2025. He has not instructed any “Nafiu Umaru” to speak on his behalf. “Hon. Nafiu Bala remains firmly committed to the pending matter before the Federal High Court. He has not indicated any intention to withdraw the suit or to seek reconciliation outside the due process of law. Any claim to the contrary is fabricated. “There is no credible threat to the life of Hon. Nafiu Bala or his family. The insinuation of danger is a deliberate falsehood designed to generate public sympathy and discredit his legitimate claim. “Hon. Nafiu Bala has not accused Hon. Leke Abejide of abandonment or inducement. The attempt to drag the name of respected political figure into this fiction is mischievous. “It is with deep regret that the party addresses the current situation occasioned by the withdrawal of Hon. Leke’s membership from the African Democratic Congress. The departure of the party’s leader and its sole duly elected member of the House of Representatives for over 15 years constitutes a significant loss to the ADC. “Hon Leke’s decision to exit the party was compelled by the calculated efforts of the coalition members to usurp the party’s structure and instigate discord within its ranks. The African Democratic Congress acknowledges and values his invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the party, which shall neither be forgotten nor ignored. “At no time has Hon. Nafiu Bala demanded or expected political compensation. His position is grounded in the ADC Constitution, specifically Articles 8(2) and 9(4), and not in personal inducements. “This publication is nothing more than political propaganda aimed at confusing the public and prejudicing the ongoing judicial process. We urge the general public and the media to disregard it in its entirety. “Nafiu Bala Gombe remains resolute in his pursuit of justice through lawful means. He will address the public at the appropriate time and through proper channels. “Meanwhile, we advise the author and sponsors of this falsehood to desist from further defamatory publications. Legal remedies will be explored if this smear campaign continues.” |
The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has declared that the party was not involved in the recently convened National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held in Ibadan. The party also assured members and supporters nationwide of its full participation in the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued by the party’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Christopher Okechukwu, the ADC said it was formally disassociating itself from the gathering, describing the event as one attended by individuals pursuing personal political ambitions. Okechukwu said that the party plans to field credible candidates for all elective offices across the country in line with its constitutional mandate and democratic principles. He said: “The duly constituted and legitimate National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the tutelage of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, hereby categorically disassociates itself from, and declares its non-participation in, the so-called National Summit of Opposition Political Parties convened in Ibadan. “As a principled and formidable opposition party in Nigeria, the ADC refuses to align itself with, or lend credibility to, a coalition of disgruntled elements whose political desperation knows no bounds. “These individuals have demonstrated that, in pursuit of their personal ambitions, they will stop at nothing, including acts capable of destabilizing the peace, unity, and stability of our nation. “These are the same individuals who, in flagrant defiance of a subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal, unlawfully organized congresses and National Convention. They have now audaciously presented themselves at the summit as bona fide members of the ADC. “For the avoidance of doubt and for the record, we state unequivocally that they are not members of our party. Their presence at the gathering can best be described as a reunion of former PDP members masquerading under a false banner. “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the rule of law and reiterate our earlier position as a law-abiding political party. We are patiently awaiting the judgment of the Supreme Court, which is anticipated any moment from Monday. “Furthermore, we assure our esteemed members and supporters across the country that the African Democratic Congress shall fully participate in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January 2027. “We will field credible candidates in all elective positions at every level, in line with our constitutional mandate and democratic principles.” |

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, on Tuesday, has dismissed a podcast video currently circulating in the public domain, describing it as the handiwork of agents of a coalition propaganda machinery. The party said the video falsely referred to a purported elective convention allegedly held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Abuja. In a statement by the Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the ADC, Hon. Bala Sani Kumo, the party clarified that the duly constituted and legitimate national leadership of the ADC, under Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, had not at any time issued notice of any elective convention to members or authorised such a gathering. He stressed that the party remains committed to due process, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, noting that it would await the outcome of an ongoing legal matter before the Federal High Court as well as a related appeal before the Supreme Court. Kumo said: “The duly constituted and legitimate National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) wishes to address a podcast video presently circulating in the public domain. “The said video, produced by agents of the coalition’s propaganda machinery, makes reference to a purported elective convention of the ADC allegedly conducted at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Abuja. “For purposes of clarity and to set the record straight, the ADC under the national leadership of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe has not, at any time, issued a notice of an elective convention to its members, nor has it authorised any such gathering. “As a responsible and law-abiding political party that upholds the tenets of due process, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, the ADC shall await the determination of the suit currently pending before the Federal High Court and the related appeal before the Supreme Court. “The matter has been adjourned to 22nd April 2026. We remain confident in the judicial process and optimistic that the judgment of the Court will affirm our position. “Upon delivery of the said judgment, the party shall, through its official and recognized channels, duly communicate the approved schedule of activities to our esteemed members and the general public.” |
Youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has described as baseless a statement by one Igboayaka Igboayaka who claimed to have declared former South-East governors persona non-grata. Igboayaka, who claimed to be President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, had attacked the leaders for endorsing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election. He mentioned the likes of Senator David Umahi, Ambassador Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Sullivan Chime, Chris Ngige, among others, accusing them of political betrayal. However, in a statement issued on Monday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, urged the general public to ignore what he called “antics of an impostor.” Okwu, while accusing Igboayaka of impersonation, said it was unjustifiable to declare anyone persona non grata for holding a political opinion. According to him, “it is within the rights of the former governors and indeed anyone else to decide who they want to support ahead of the 2027 general elections. “Time has gone for people to come on the media to insult leaders simply for not aligning with their political beliefs, more so when such is coming from an impostor. Leaders in other zones of the country have also at one point or the other declared support for one political party or another, but nobody has come to insult them. “As we inch closer to the 2027 general elections, we urge our people to be mindful of the fact that support is never gotten by cohesion but persuasion. “Political rascalism will not be tolerated in the South-East this time; what the so-called Igboayaka did was the height of rascality and stands condemned. “Those behind this mask should desist from disparasing our leaders. These are people who have served their states meritoriously at one point or the other, and we are not going to sit by and allow unknown quantities use them to chase clout. "It is highly despicable to deride our most distinguished leaders, including a man of the people like Ambassador-designate, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who has continued to make the youths, proud, as well as the workaholic works minister, Engr David Umahi. These are eminent leaders and totally respect their decision. “We are very much aware of people sponsoring the so-called Igboayaka and it is only a matter of time and we will expose them if they don’t desist from this infamous path,” Okwu declared. |
The immediate past Special Assistant on Media to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Segun Tomori, has formally declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II in Lagos State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Tomori said his decision to join active politics in 2010 was shaped by his early exposure to Nigeria’s democratic struggles, particularly the events surrounding the June 12, 1993 presidential election and its annulment, which brought an abrupt end to the Third Republic. According to him, growing up under military rule and witnessing the hope that accompanied the June 12 election left a lasting impression on him, sparking a deep interest in governance and political engagement. He said: “Until then, what I knew as a government since birth was military rule. Witnessing the hope and excitement on the faces of my parents and other adults at the time struck a deep chord in me. “The enthusiasm to follow the struggle for de-annulment of the elections, deepened my affinity with politics, triggering my interest in newspapers and magazines of that era like Concord newspapers, Tell magazine, The News amongst others. “I recall reading about the exploits and sacrifices of our President, the then Sen. Bola Tinubu, Pa Anthony Enahoro, Dan Suleiman, my boss, Dele Alake and a host of others who fought tooth and nail in galvanizing the pro-democracy movement - the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) which contributed significantly to the restoration of democracy in 1999. “Hence, when I felt the time was ripe to join active politics, after my national youth service, I made a deliberate decision to join Asiwaju Tinubu’s political family, the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), despite the fact that it was in opposition at the time. “I was motivated by the progressive bent of the party, coupled with the fact that its leading lights stood to be counted in the June 12 struggle when lily-livered politicians chickened out, while others bowed to the allure of filthy lucre, at the detriment of the nation. “The party later became one of the legacy parties that formed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). With over a decade of hands-on experience spanning both the National Assembly and the Executive, working with a Member of the House of Representatives and two ministers, alongside a robust network at the Federal level and valuable institutional memory, I believe the time has come to answer the call of my people. “I hereby formally declare my aspiration to contest for the House of Representatives, to represent the good people of Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II, Lagos, under the platform of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Across my journey in both public and private sectors, three core values have defined me, Service, Excellence, and Trust (SET). These principles form the theme of my campaign, aptly tagged the SET Campaign, derived from the acronym of my name, Segun Tomori. “Our manifesto is anchored on the Eight ( Pillars of SET, includes: Community health Outreach ; Support for Women and Vulnerable Families; Generation Next - Youth & Sports Talent Development; Education & Schools Intervention Programme; Light Up Oshodi-Isolo constituency II amongst other people centered initiatives.”He emphasised the need for purposeful legislation aimed at improving the welfare of constituents and contributing to national development. He added, “There is much work to be done through purposeful legislation, not only to improve the welfare of our constituents but also the lives of the average Nigerian, even as it contributes meaningfully to national development. “I bring to this race the dynamism of youth, fresh ideas, and a proven ability to build consensus and deliver results, in complement to the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu. Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II is SET for better representation.” |
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has reiterated its commitment to value reorientation, civic education, and national identity building, while calling for stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) ahead of the next general elections. The Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call during a courtesy visit by NAWOJ, describing the engagement as timely and strategic to national development and democratic consolidation. He said effective nation-building requires sustained partnerships between institutions responsible for public communication and citizen engagement, noting that NOA—established from the former MAMSER framework—maintains a robust grassroots structure with over 800 offices nationwide. Issa-Onilu highlighted the Agency’s unique mandate to manage information and civic orientation, while commending women journalists for their patriotism and contributions to national development through ethical journalism and voluntary service. He emphasised the urgency of strengthening voter and civic education among young Nigerians, noting that a significant proportion of the population is under the age of 35. According to him, emerging digital influences and foreign media content are reshaping values sometimes for the worse, making structured civic engagement for national good more critical than ever. The NOA Director-General disclosed that the Agency has developed the Nigerian Identity Project under the National Values Charter, anchored on a “seven-for-seven” principle outlining mutual responsibilities between government and citizens. He added that the Federal Executive Council has approved key components, including the reintroduction of Citizenship Studies into school curricula across all levels in a bid to uphold and promote national values. In a statement by NOA’s Director of Communication and Media, Bala Musa, the Agency also revealed plans to boost local children’s content, targeting at least 70 per cent indigenous cartoons to promote Nigerian culture and values. Issa-Onilu stressed the need for strategic deployment of communication resources to improve public perception and strengthen national cohesion, while calling for a shift from quota-based approaches to addressing structural and cultural barriers limiting women’s participation in leadership. In her remarks, NAWOJ National President, Aishatu Ibrahim, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration in civic and voter education, ethical journalism, and the fight against misinformation ahead of the upcoming elections. She proposed a joint NOA–NAWOJ initiative involving nationwide training workshops, community outreach programmes targeting women and youth, development of civic education materials in local languages, and coordinated media campaigns to promote inclusive and informed participation. Also speaking, a member of NAWOJ Board of Trustees, Zubair Jide Atta, underscored the importance of national values and civic orientation, reflecting on the evolution of Nigeria’s National Anthem and advocating stronger integration of media and information literacy into educational systems. The engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment between NOA and NAWOJ to deepen collaboration in promoting civic responsibility, national values, and inclusive governance, particularly as Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections. |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has called for immediate interventions to address the rising wave of violence in parts of Northern Nigeria, including the establishment of peace committees, a comprehensive overhaul of the security architecture. The forum also raised alarm over the escalating killings in Plateau State, Kaduna State, and Benue State, describing the attacks as brutal, inhumane, and a direct threat to the fabric of society. In an exclusive chat with The Guardian, the NEF Director of NGOs/CSOs, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said the violence reflects deeper societal fractures that require urgent and collective action. The elders called on security agencies to increase their presence in affected areas through patrols and checkpoints, reassuring citizens that their safety is paramount. Suleiman said: “The recent brutal killings in Plateau, Kaduna, and Benue states have cast a long shadow of grief and despair. As an elder statesman and a representative of the community, I feel there is an urgent need to address these harrowing events, which have not only claimed lives but also threatened the very fabric of our society. “The violence we witness is not merely a reflection of individual acts but rather a symptom of deeper societal fissures that demand our collective attention and action. In response to the recent violence, immediate measures should be taken to restore a semblance of peace and security in the affected communities. “First and foremost, a series of emergency meetings have to be convened among local leaders, traditional rulers, and security agencies to assess the situation and formulate a cohesive response. These meetings should foster dialogue, allowing community members to voice their concerns while also encouraging the sharing of information with security personnel. “The establishment of peace committees should be prioritized. These committees should comprise respected figures from various ethnic and religious backgrounds, tasked with mediating conflicts and promoting understanding. By engaging in open discussions and community forums, we hope to dispel the atmosphere of fear and mistrust that has taken root.” Recent attacks underscore the severity of the crisis. In Plateau State, at least 14 persons were killed in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area. In Kaduna State, a wedding gathering in Kagarko LGA was attacked, leaving 13 dead and several others abducted. These incidents occurred just one week after similar killings in Benue State. Strengthening Security Presence and Trust Suleiman noted that security measures alone would not suffice without rebuilding trust between communities and law enforcement. He emphasized that the crisis is not only a security issue but a national emergency requiring decisive government action. He added, “To bridge this gap, we propose regular joint training sessions that include community members and security personnel. These sessions would not only enhance the skills of security forces but also educate community members on their rights and responsibilities regarding security matters. “Establishing a feedback mechanism is crucial. Community members must feel empowered to report incidents and share intelligence without fear of retribution. This can be achieved through anonymous hotlines and community liaison officers who act as intermediaries. “By fostering an environment of cooperation, we can create a more responsive and accountable security apparatus that reflects the needs and concerns of the communities it serves. “In the wake of violence, the plight of victims and displaced persons cannot be overlooked. Immediate humanitarian assistance is essential to alleviate their suffering. Local governments, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), should mobilize resources to provide food, shelter, and medical care to those affected. “Psychosocial support services should also be implemented to help individuals process their trauma and begin the healing journey. In addition to immediate relief, long-term support systems must be established. This includes vocational training programs aimed at empowering displaced persons to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society. “By equipping them with skills, we not only restore their dignity but also contribute to the economic resilience of our communities. Initiatives promoting education for children affected by violence are imperative. Investing in the future generation is a crucial step towards breaking the cycle of violence and fostering a culture of peace. “As we grapple with the aftermath of these attacks, it is essential to analyze the broader context in which they occur. There is a growing concern among community leaders and security analysts that these violent acts may not be isolated incidents but rather coordinated efforts across states. “To address this, we must advocate for comprehensive intelligence-sharing mechanisms among states. Collaborative efforts among security agencies at the national and state levels are vital in identifying and dismantling networks that perpetuate violence. A unified approach, characterized by shared intelligence and resources, is essential to counteract these threats effectively.” |
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has used the Easter season to call on Nigerians to imbibe the values of love, tolerance, and unity in their relationship with one another. Invoking the spirit of Easter as a season of sacrifice, reconciliation, and renewed hope, Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to imbibe these values in their daily interactions with one another, transcending the barriers of faith, ethnicity, and political affiliation. He described the current moment as a critical period in the nation's history, stressing that Nigeria's strength lies in the diversity of its people and the collective will to forge a united and prosperous country out of that diversity. The DG, however, warned that terrorists and other criminal elements remain the greatest enemies of the Nigerian state, cautioning that Nigerians must not allow these destructive forces to succeed in their sinister agenda to destabilise the unity of the country. He pointed to the recent bomb attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, during the last Ramadan, and the deadly assault on Angwan Rukuba community in Jos on Palm Sunday as clear evidence of the grave threat these enemies of progress pose to the unity and peace of the country. Issa-Onilu assured Nigerians that the government is not relenting in its efforts to tackle the menace of insecurity, noting that it remains fully committed to deploying every available resource and strategy to achieve a lasting solution to the problem across the country. He also appealed to both Christians and Muslims across the country to stand firmly together in the face of these threats, stressing that the terrorists and their sponsors are the common enemies of all Nigerians and must not be allowed to drive a wedge between adherents of the two faiths or undermine the nation's long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence. The DG further noted that it is only through a united front that Nigeria can effectively defeat the forces of terror, urging religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to use their platforms to preach messages of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect among their followers. In a statement issued by NOA Deputy Director of Communications and Media, Paul Odenyi, the agency called on the media and civil society organisations to actively counter divisive narratives and hate speech often exploited by terrorists to recruit and incite violence. Issa-Onilu said that his message by extending warm Easter felicitations to Christians across Nigeria, expressing hope that the season would usher in renewed hope, healing, and harmony for the Nigerian nation. |

As the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections, it is imperative that all political actors respect the independence of the electoral commission. “Democracy thrives on the principle of fair play, and any actions that could disrupt the electoral process must be avoided. INEC’s call for political stakeholders to act responsibly is a timely reminder that the health of our democracy depends on the collective commitment of all parties involved. “The DWI believes that a robust democracy necessitates the active participation of citizens, political parties, and institutions alike. The authentic leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, on Thursday, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect the status quo and allow him to lead the party in line with its constitution. The appeal follows INEC’s decision of April 1, 2026, and its refusal to grant a request by the plaintiffs’ solicitors to allow Gombe assume control of the party’s affairs pending the determination of the substantive case before a trial court. Reacting to the development, Gombe said the appeal draws the Commission’s attention to an order of the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026. He urged INEC to respect existing court orders and the party’s constitution in resolving the ongoing leadership crisis. He said: “In our appeal, we draw INEC’s attention to the Order of the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, which explicitly directed the Commission to refrain from taking any step or doing any act capable of foisting a fait accompli on the court or otherwise rendering nugatory the proceedings before the trial court, having regard to all the processes filed. “We call on INEC to respect the status quo as it stood on September 2, 2025, to adhere strictly to the African Democratic Congress constitution, and to comply fully with the court order by allowing Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe to take over the leadership of the party in line with the party’s constitution. “We also welcome INEC’s decision not to recognize the faction led by His Excellency Senator David Mark, and we reiterate our unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria and a fully democratic dispensation.” |

This act not only speaks to the individual’s rights but also highlights the importance of familial bonds, which should be respected, especially during times of grief. “Furthermore, we acknowledge the visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima to the El-Rufai residence to offer condolences. His words, describing Hajiya Ummah as “a woman of great virtue and a pillar of strength,” resonate deeply within our collective conscience. Such sentiments reflect the shared values that bind us as Nigerians, transcending political divides and fostering a spirit of solidarity in the face of loss. “The presence of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, who expressed profound sorrow and shared personal memories of Hajiya Ummah as a caring maternal figure, further underscores the impact she had on those around her. It is a reminder that even in times of political strife, the human experience of grief unites us all. “The outpouring of support from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during this mourning period exemplifies the importance of standing together, offering solace and strength to one another amidst adversity. The funeral period, while marked by sorrow, also provided a unique opportunity for political leaders across party lines to come together in a display of solidarity.” The group also praised members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political actors who visited the family, stating that the show of solidarity helped ease tensions and reinforced shared humanity above political divides. He added, “As the North-West chapter of the Northern Youth Frontier, we believe that President Tinubu’s compassionate response to this tragedy reflects the qualities of true leadership. In conclusion, we extend our deepest condolences to the El-Rufai family and commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his rare display of empathy and compassion. “Let this moment serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion in leadership and the need for unity in times of grief. May the soul of Hajiya Ummah El-Rufai rest in peace, and may her legacy of strength and virtue continue to inspire future generations.” |
