The authentic National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Monday, issued a strong warning to the general public, party members, and the international community to disregard the purported “new party headquarters” inaugurated by a faction led by former Senate President, Senator David Mark. In a statement signed by the National Chairman of the ADC, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, the party described the action as a blatant and illegal attempt to usurp the leadership of the party, which it said is built on democracy, integrity, and the rule of law. Gombe stated that the faction lacks any “constitutional, moral, or legal authority” to speak on behalf of the party or represent its interests. He said: “The authentic National Working Committee (NWC), duly recognized by the party's constitution and a majority of its organs, wishes to state categorically: “The Faction is Illegitimate: The group led by Senator David Mark is an aggrieved splinter group operating outside the established structures of the ADC. Their actions are a product of their failure to subvert the party's internal democratic processes for their personal ambitions. “The "Headquarters" is Unauthorized: The building being paraded as a "new national headquarters" is not the official seat of the African Democratic Congress. It is a private facility of an illegitimate association and has no affiliation with the authentic ADC. “An Anti-Democratic Act: This move is a desperate, anti-democratic gambit aimed at creating confusion and misleading the public. It is a direct assault on the will of the party's membership and a violation of our constitution.” He called on Nigerians, party supporters, and key institutions, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media to recognize only the directives issued from the authentic ADC National Secretariat. He added, “The legitimate leadership of the ADC remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a credible alternative for the Nigerian people. We will not be deterred by the activities of a few individuals seeking to undermine our collective progress. “We are currently pursuing all legal and constitutional avenues to restore order and sanction these actions accordingly. The ADC remains focused on its mission to rescue and rebuild Nigeria for the benefit of all citizens.” |
The youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has described the recent effort of the Nigerian Government towards the release of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu as heart warming. The group recalled that despite several appeals to former President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in Ekweremadu’s case, the previous administration showed no interest. In a statement by the National President of Ohanaeze Youths, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said it was reassuring that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had taken steps to facilitate Ekweremadu’s possible transfer to Nigeria. He said it was a thing of delight that President Bola Tinubu’s government has moved towards facilitating the return of Ekweremadu to Nigeria. It could be recalled that President Tinubu’s delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, has commenced consultations with the United Kingdom, UK, authorities on the possibilities of securing Ekweremadu's transfer to Nigeria to serve his remaining jail term. Okwu said: “This singular move by the President Bola Tinubu administration further reinforces his love for the Igbo people. President Bola Tinubu has continued to do for Ndigbo what the previous administration deliberately refused to do. “The Ohanaeze youth president, who also celebrated the appointment of another Igbo man as one of the service chiefs, pleaded with the Tinubu government to follow through the process of Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria. “Ndigbo are grateful to Mr President for initiating this move; this singular action and several others will never be taken for granted. We urge the government, having commenced the process, to see to its fruitful conclusion.” |
A civil advocacy group under the banner of #Nigeria Unite, has petitioned major Western governments and international institutions, including the United States, United Kingdom and the European Union, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, over what they call role in Nigeria’s democracy decline In the petition titled “Imminent Collapse of Democracy in the Sahel Region (West Africa)”, the group expressed deep concern over what it called the “systematic erosion of democratic institutions” in Nigeria, warning that the country’s political trajectory mirrors the instability already engulfing parts of the Sahel. The document, signed by the group’s national secretariat, Sunday Daniel, and addressed to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington D.C., the European Commission in Brussels, the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and key international figures including Senator Ted Cruz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He called on the diplomatic intervention to protect Nigeria’s democracy and stability amid what it described as a growing authoritarian drift. The petition linked the decline of democratic norms in Nigeria to alleged abuses of power by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of “intimidation, bribery, and manipulation of state institutions” to weaken opposition parties and consolidate control. According to the petition, the decline of democratic norms in Nigeria is linked to alleged abuses of power by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, whom it accused of “intimidation, bribery, and manipulation of state institutions” to weaken opposition parties and consolidate control. Citing ongoing instability in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, three Sahelian nations under military rule, the group warned that Nigeria’s democratic backsliding could have “catastrophic regional and global consequences,” including rising insecurity, migration pressures, and humanitarian crises. Daniel said: “We urge the African Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom to take a proactive stance in safeguarding democracy in Nigeria. Diplomatic engagement, monitoring electoral processes, and offering support to civil society organizations are essential steps in this endeavour. “We implore the international community to impose targeted sanctions against Nyesom Wike, the architect of many of these anti-democratic machinations. Measures such as visa bans, and the confiscation of assets abroad would send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate the undermining of democratic principles. “In addition to targeting Wike, we advocate for similar punitive measures against the compromised judges and police officers who facilitate the enforcement of his schemes. Holding these individuals accountable is crucial for restoring the rule of law and rebuilding public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. “We strongly advocate for the immediate sanctioning of public judicial officials implicated in collusion with Wike in this alarming scheme. Noteworthy among these individuals are John T. Tsoho, Peter Odo Lifu, Joyce Obehi Abdulmalik, and James K. Omotosho, whose actions undermine the integrity of our judicial system. “Additionally, the Commissioner of Police of the Federal Capital Territory and the Independent National Electoral Commission must be held accountable for their roles in this troubling alliance. Ensuring accountability is essential to restore public trust and uphold the rule of law in our democratic processes.” The group warned that failure to act could lead to the “complete destabilization of sub-Saharan Africa,” emphasizing that Nigeria’s democratic integrity remains essential to the stability of the Sahel and the broader African continent. He added, “We the undersigned citizens and advocates express concern about declining democratic institutions in Nigeria which is Africa's largest democracy. The deterioration of democracy in the Sahel region signifies a regional crisis that poses a growing threat to international peace and stability with direct implications for migration control, affecting Europe. “The current trajectory of political events in the Sahel region of West Africa suggests an imminent collapse of democracy that threatens not only Nigeria, the largest democracy in the Black world, but also the stability and democratic integrity of the entire Sahel region.” The petition further accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of using coercion, intimidation, and inducement to dominate Nigeria’s political space, warning that the pattern of mass defections from opposition parties could transform the country into a de facto one-party state reminiscent of the military era. The group alleged that Wike’s actions had deepened internal crises within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), eroding internal democracy and weakening the opposition’s ability to compete ahead of the 2027 general elections. He Further said: “The All Progressive Congress (APC) has used coercion, intimidation and inducements to muscle the political space in Nigeria overshadowing the facade of multi-party democracy. This forceful bulldozing has affected opposition parties like the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), weakening their ability to challenge effectively. “There is a significant influx of politicians, including governors, senators, and local government officials, forced to switch to the APC, posing a threat to the diversity of Nigeria's political landscape. “The continuous defections to the APC raise concerns about Nigeria transitioning into a one-party state, stifling opposition voices and compromising the democratic process in the style of the late General Sani Abatcha. “The African Democratic Congress and LP face internal struggles caused by the actions of Wike, further weakening the opposition and diminishing the chances of a robust democratic process. “Beyond the ADC and the LP, Wike's criminal encroachment extends to the internal workings of the PDP, where the National Working Committee (NWC) suspended several National Officers due to anti-party activities. This suspension is in accordance with specific sections of the Party's Constitution, and the suspended officers will face a one-month suspension, subject to review by the National Disciplinary Committee. “However, Wike's use of state resources to seal the PDP Secretariat raises concerns about the legitimacy of the party's internal governance and the potential for the INEC to recognize the suspended individuals as legitimate leaders. If the trend continues unchecked, future elections in Nigeria may become mere endorsements of predetermined outcomes, leading to a democracy devoid of choice, competition, and accountability. “The erosion of democratic norms in Nigeria is further exacerbated using public resources to lure opposition leaders into the ruling party. While constitutional provisions allow for party-switching, the reckless deployment of state resources to entice dissenting voices to defect undermines the very essence of democratic competition. This practice not only fosters a culture of corruption but also creates an environment where opposing views are systematically silenced. “The allocation of resources is starkly unequal. Governors from the ruling party are showered with immense financial support, while their counterparts from opposition parties are deliberately starved of resources, effectively crippling their ability to function and compete in the political arena. This imbalance further consolidates power within the ruling party and diminishes the prospects for a robust democratic process leading up to the 2027 elections. “The Gagging of Opposition Voices As the political environment in Nigeria becomes increasingly oppressive, we witness the gradual gagging of opposition voices. The chilling effect of state-sponsored intimidation and coercion leaves little room for dissent. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the absence of a vibrant opposition could culminate in a political environment devoid of accountability, transparency, and genuine democratic choice.” According to the petition, public resources are being used to “lure opposition leaders into the ruling party,” creating a culture of corruption and silencing dissent. It also criticized the National Assembly for being “overwhelmed by the executive,” accusing it of failing in its constitutional duty of oversight and accountability. The group warned that the continued suppression of dissent and politicization of state institutions could trigger mass unrest and regional instability, stressing that a collapse of democracy in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, would have far-reaching consequences. “The destabilization of Nigeria, with its population of 250 million people, will have repercussions across Africa and beyond,” the statement added. “It will threaten peace, increase migration to Europe and the U.S., and worsen the humanitarian and security situation in the Sahel," he said. |
The Northern Awareness Network (NAN), on Wednesday, rejected recent claims suggesting that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide, describing such allegations as misleading and harmful to national unity. In a statement by its Chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, the group said the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria cannot be reduced to a matter of religious persecution, stressing that the crisis is a complex mix of political, ethnic, and economic factors. Sulaiman expressed concern over what he termed an “alarming surge in rhetoric” portraying Nigeria as a country engaged in systematic extermination of Christians. According to him, such narratives distort reality and risk further deepening divisions in the country. He said: “We wish to clarify that the situation in Nigeria is not a straightforward case of religious persecution but rather a multifaceted crisis characterized by political, ethnic, and economic dimensions. “In recent months, there has been an alarming surge in rhetoric suggesting that Christians in Nigeria are facing systematic extermination. Such assertions, while emotionally charged, lack a comprehensive understanding of the prevailing circumstances. “The ongoing violence in Nigeria has predominantly affected various communities, including Muslims and Christians alike, with extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP targeting individuals based on their religious affiliations indiscriminately. “The timeline of attacks on Muslim worshippers from 2013 to 2025 starkly illustrates this point, highlighting that violence is not confined to any single religious group. “As we reflect on these harrowing incidents, it is crucial to recognize that the narrative of genocide serves to deepen divisions within our society rather than foster unity in the face of shared challenges. The Northern Awareness Network urges all stakeholders, including international partners, to approach the situation with nuance and an understanding of its complexities. “In light of these concerns, we wish to caution President Donald Trump against hasty military interventions in Nigeria. Such actions could exacerbate the already fragile state of our democracy, risking further destabilization in a country that is striving towards political maturity and social cohesion.” Sulaiman also used the occasion to caution former U.S. President Donald Trump against calls for military intervention in Nigeria, warning that such a move could destabilize the country’s fragile democracy. He added, “One of the most pressing threats to Nigeria’s democracy is posed by individuals such as Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Wike's recent maneuvers to destabilize political parties, including the African Democratic Congress. “The Labour Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party, reveal a troubling pattern of subjugation of opposition voices. His actions not only threaten the integrity of our political system but also jeopardize the rule of law and democratic governance in Nigeria. “Wike's dangerous machinations have the potential to incite political unrest, further polarizing an already divided populace. We urge President Trump to redirect his attention towards safeguarding democracy in Nigeria by imposing sanctions on Wike and his co-conspirators, including visa bans that would hold them accountable for their actions. “Such measures would send a clear message that the international community stands firm against the erosion of democratic principles and the rule of law. “The Northern Awareness Network calls for a balanced and informed approach to Nigeria's challenges. We advocate for a focus on fostering dialogue, promoting peace, and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs, can coexist harmoniously. “We believe that the U.S. can play a vital role in supporting these efforts by prioritizing diplomacy over military intervention and holding accountable those who threaten our democratic institutions." |
The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA), has raised alarm over what it describes as the “alarming and destructive behavior” of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, warning that his actions pose a serious threat to the stability of Nigeria’s democratic process. OPA argued that Wike’s alignment with factions opposed to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has heightened internal conflicts, weakened the party’s national structure, and undermined its political relevance. In a statement issued by its Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, the group said it was compelled to speak out due to what it called a growing pattern of political interference and destabilization allegedly orchestrated by Wike since the transition of power to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Kayode said: “In the wake of the transition of power, Wike has engaged in a series of troubling maneuvers, particularly his ongoing crisis against the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara. His strategy appears to be one of sabotage, leveraging thugs and corrupt elements within the judiciary to destabilize Fubara’s administration. “These orchestrated attacks are not mere political disagreements; they are calculated efforts to undermine governance in Rivers State. The use of violence and intimidation against political opponents, coupled with the manipulation of law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, demonstrates a blatant disregard for the principles of democracy and the rule of law. “The ramifications of Wike’s actions extend beyond personal ambition; they infiltrate the very fabric of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His involvement in internal conflicts within the party has sown seeds of discord, leading to a fragmentation that threatens to dilute its once formidable influence. “By aligning himself with factions that oppose the party’s leadership, Wike is not only eroding the unity of the PDP but also fostering an environment rife with confusion and dissent among party loyalists. This internal strife is detrimental, as it undermines the effectiveness of the party and, by extension, the democratic process in Nigeria. The group also accused Wike of attempting to exert influence over other opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claiming his alleged interference has triggered infighting and disillusionment among their members. He added, “This behavior exemplifies a broader strategy of destabilization that Wike appears to be employing, one that seeks to fracture the opposition and entrench his influence over the political landscape of Rivers State. “The implications of Wike’s actions on the rule of law cannot be overstated. By leveraging corrupt judicial elements, he has sought to weaponize the legal system against his adversaries, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty. This manipulation not only compromises the integrity of our judiciary but also sets a dangerous precedent for political conduct in Nigeria. “It is imperative for the international community to recognize that such behavior transcends local concerns; it is a direct threat to the democratic foundations upon which our nation stands." The group called on the international community to “redirect its energy” toward countering what it described as Wike’s “destructive maneuvers” and to stand in solidarity with the people of Rivers State. “We urge you to stand in solidarity with the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large, advocating for the restoration of democratic principles and the rule of law. The time has come for the global community to take a firm stance against the forces that seek to undermine our democracy. “We implore you to support measures that will hold Wike accountable for his actions. This includes advocating for transparency in political processes, safeguarding the independence of our judiciary, and ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate without bias or corruption. It is imperative that we collectively work towards a political environment that fosters fairness, justice, and respect for the rule of law. “The Odua People’s Assembly stands resolute in our commitment to democracy and the rights of the people. We will not remain silent in the face of tyranny and corruption. We call upon all stakeholders, government officials, political leaders, civil society organizations, and the international community, to join us in this critical endeavor. The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has raised alarm over what it described as the “increasingly authoritarian and destabilizing actions” of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, warning that his conduct poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability. In a statement, the group’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, said the organization felt “compelled to address the alarming actions of Wike,” whom he accused of systematically undermining democratic institutions and political parties across the country. He said: “Nyesom Wike, once a mere creek boy during the turbulent times when patriotic citizens fought valiantly for democracy, now finds himself in a position of power where he is wielding that power to undermine the very principles he once benefited from. His actions are not merely misguided; they represent a calculated assault on the democratic fabric of our nation. “In recent months, Wike has waged a relentless campaign against political parties, sowing discord and confusion within the ranks of organizations such as the Labor Party and the African Democratic Congress. His tactics have escalated alarmingly as he now seeks to destabilize the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), an institution that has been central to Nigeria’s democratic journey. “This chaos is not a byproduct of political rivalry; it is a deliberate strategy aimed at consolidating power and silencing dissent. Let us not forget the historical context of Wike's actions. His activities in Rivers State were marked by a series of egregious violations of democratic norms, where he nearly scuttled the democratic process and set the state ablaze with violence and intimidation. “The recent incidents surrounding his governance provide a stark reminder of this troubling legacy. One of the most troubling manifestations of Wike's authoritarian tendencies occurred recently when he indiscriminately ordered the teargassing of the Rivers State Assembly. “This incident, shocking in its brutality, is emblematic of a leader who has lost sight of the democratic ideals he once championed. The use of tear gas against elected representatives is not merely an act of aggression; it is a chilling signal that dissent will not be tolerated, and that the sanctity of political discourse is under siege.” Bamidele alleged that Wike’s “tactics of division and intimidation” have been aimed at consolidating personal power rather than advancing democratic governance. He added, “Moreover, just days ago, Wike employed thugs and the police to violently disperse delegates at the PDP secretariat, causing considerable damage and sealing the premises. In a brazen act of political thuggery, he handed the keys to four handpicked loyalists, effectively sidelining legitimate party leadership. Such actions not only undermine the integrity of the PDP but also threaten the very essence of democracy in Nigeria. “Wike's open opposition to Governor Fubara's administration further illustrates his willingness to destabilize political structures for personal gain. He publicly announced his withdrawal of support for Fubara, citing accusations of dishonesty and dissatisfaction with the governor's approach to governance. “This public denunciation was not merely a political maneuver; it was a calculated move to sow discord and create an atmosphere of distrust. His backing of the state assembly's failed impeachment attempt against Fubara, coupled with his condemnation of the governor's attempts to engage with the assembly, reveals a man willing to leverage political institutions for his own ends. “Reports suggest that Wike seeks to control the state's financial resources, allegedly linking funds to projects that benefit his allies. This manipulation of power is not only unethical but represents a profound betrayal of the public trust. “The crisis escalated to a point where President Tinubu was compelled to intervene, resulting in the suspension of Fubara, the deputy governor, and all state assembly members for six months. This intervention, while necessary, underscores the severity of Wike's actions and the urgent need for accountability in our political system. “Now, as the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Wike has resurrected these same tactics, employing thugs and leveraging corrupt judicial elements, including certain judges and the FCT Police Commissioner, to further his agenda of destabilization. “The recent turmoil within the PDP, particularly the faction aligned with Wike that suspended Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and other National Working Committee members, exemplifies how far he is willing to go to maintain control. “This situation is dire. The ramifications of Wike's actions extend beyond party politics; they threaten the very essence of democracy in Nigeria. The systematic dismantling of political opposition not only curtails free expression but also undermines the electorate's right to choose their representatives without fear or coercion. Such actions are antithetical to the democratic ideals we strive to uphold. “We must also address the inaction of those in higher offices who have the power to intervene. We call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to act decisively in checking Wike’s excesses. It is imperative that the leadership of this country recognizes that allowing Wike's destructive behavior to continue unchecked will not only destabilize the political process but will also set a dangerous precedent for political conduct across Nigeria. The integrity of our democracy is at stake, and it is the responsibility of our leaders to safeguard it." The group also appealed to the international community, including the United States and the United Kingdom, to “monitor and hold accountable those who actively undermine democracy in Nigeria.” “The global community has a vested interest in the stability and democratic integrity of our nation. We implore them to hold accountable those who engage in practices that threaten peace, stability, and democratic governance. “The actions of Nyesom Wike represent not just a threat to the PDP, but a broader assault on democracy itself. As citizens committed to the principles of democracy and the rule of law, we must unite in our resolve to resist these encroachments. We call upon all stakeholders—political parties, civil society, the media, and the international community—to join us in this fight for the soul of our nation.” |
The Zambian government has indicated interest in understudying the operation of the National Values charter, the cornerstone of the proposed Nigerian Identity Project which was earlier approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). This was the outcome of the second meeting between NOA officials led by the Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu and the Zambian High Commission officials in Nigeria led by Jenipher Mutembo, Deputy High Commissioner at the NOA headquarters in Abuja. Addressing the team from the Zambian High Commission, the Director General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, gave an overview of the operational structure of the agency saying, “It is my pleasure to welcome you to the premises of the National Orientation Agency. The Agency is one of the largest in Nigeria, with 818 offices across all 774 local government areas, 36 states, and the Federal Capital Territory. We are deeply rooted at the grassroots level and remain a vital communication channel between the government and the people.” Issa-Onilu explained that the Agency communicates government policies, programmes, and projects to citizens and collates grassroots feedback to inform decision-making, adding that the feedback is regularly submitted to the relevant government institutions and the parliament. The DG, who said the NOA promotes patriotism, civic responsibility, and unity among Nigerians, also shared his experience at a recent programme in the United Kingdom, where he met the Gambian High Commissioner in London, who took interest in the work of the NOA, indicating potentials for broader African collaboration. In a statement by NOA Deputy Director of press, Paul Odenyi, expressed hope that Zambia might similarly engage in such partnerships. Speaking further, he also commented on the narrow perception of leadership in Africa, typically limited to political figures, instead of encompassing civil, traditional, and moral leaders as influencers of national values. In her remarks, the Zambian Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs Jenipher Mutembo, expressed sincere gratitude for the hospitality and openness extended by the Director General and his team, recognising the institutional strength and nationwide structure of the NOA. Mrs Mutembo said, “I must commend your presence in all local government areas. This grassroots model is powerful, and we see its potential as a framework other African countries, Zambia included, can learn from.” She applauded the Agency’s commitment in providing an opportunity for Zambia to observe, learn, and possibly adopt aspects of NOA’s operational methodology for national reorientation and civic education, stressing the shared African values, youth influence, and the role of media, particularly touching on cultural perceptions exported through Nigeria’s creative industry. “Our young people are watching these films. They are learning, forming ideas, and creating perceptions, sometimes misinformed, about success, morality, and identity. What we portray shapes national values and international image. As leaders, we have a duty to ensure that the content reaching the public inspires unity, innovation, dignity, and pride in African heritage. “Nigeria is the cultural giant of Africa, and Nollywood is one of your most powerful exports. However, as a sister country, I must mention, with respect, that there is growing concern in Zambia, particularly among our youth, about the dominant themes of rituals, occultism, and superstitions in many Nollywood productions,” she stated. While raising the importance of inter-agency collaboration and South-South knowledge exchange, she proposed a more formal mechanism for technical cooperation between Zambia and Nigeria on civic education and grassroots mobilisation, cultural diplomacy and media content exchange. She further reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expressed appreciation for NOA’s strategic leadership, adding that Zambia is actively seeking models that foster behavioural change and civic responsibility to support sustainable development. Mrs Mutembo concluded by acknowledging that Nigeria’s investment in structured national orientation can serve as a reference for Zambia’s own national development strategy, particularly in promoting public participation in governance and responsible citizenship. |
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has cautioned against any form of foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, warning that such actions could undermine the country’s democracy and threaten its sovereignty. The ADC urged Nigerians to uphold democratic values and unity above partisan divisions, describing national stability as a collective responsibility. The party’s National Leadership, in a statement by its Director of Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Christopher Okechukwu, expressed alarm over the reported designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The ADC described the development as “deeply troubling” and urged coalition partners and political stakeholders to prioritize Nigeria’s national interests over any foreign agenda. Okechukwu said: “The leadership expressed deep concern over the potential implications of this designation on Nigeria's sovereignty and international relations. The party emphasized that Nigerians will not take it kindly to any attempts by external forces to interfere in the country's internal affairs. “The ADC stressed that any efforts to compromise Nigeria's democracy would be vehemently opposed, and we urged our coalition partners to prioritize national interests over any foreign agendas. By doing so, the ADC aims to protect the country's democratic institutions and ensure that its sovereignty remains intact. “The party emphasizes that while we may have significant disagreements with the current administration on policies related to security, economy, and other critical issues, such differences do not warrant actions that would undermine the nation's democracy. “Our stance highlights the importance of maintaining national stability and adherence to democratic values over partisan or personal agendas, even in the face of political differences. “Ultimately, the ADC’s warning should spark a national conversation about the role of foreign powers in Nigeria’s affairs. Nigerians must demand accountability from their leaders and ensure that the country’s democracy is not compromised by external influences.” Okechukwu called for a national conversation on the role of foreign powers in the country’s political landscape. He added, “As we navigate into complex political terrain, our commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and sovereignty will undoubtedly remain unwavering. “The party’s stance serves as a testament to the power of principled leadership and the importance of prioritizing national interests. Nigerians can build a brighter future for themselves and future generations.” |
The Yache Advocates for Peace and Unity has announced plans to honour Senator (Prof.) Stephen Adi Odey, the Cross River State Commissioner for Education, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to peace, unity, and development within Yache Nation and beyond. According to a statement by the group’s Head of Publicity, Godwin Amunde, the grand celebration is scheduled for November 15, 2025, in Abuja. The event will bring together community leaders, government officials and well-wishers to pay tribute to Prof. Odey, described as “a blessing to Yache Nation.” Amunde highlighted that before Prof. Odey’s tenure, Yache, a community in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, lacked basic government presence. However, his leadership has transformed the area through multiple interventions, including a fully furnished health centre, improved educational infrastructure, and the empowerment of thousands of youths through scholarships, skills acquisition, and job placements in both the public and private sectors. Amunde said, urging residents of Abuja and friends of Yache to turn out in large numbers for the celebration, adding that, “Prof. Odey has not only brought development but also united the people,” The upcoming event will feature goodwill messages, discussions on peace and unity, and cultural performances that reflect Yache’s vibrant heritage. Among Prof. Odey’s notable recent interventions is a ₦10 million donation towards the reconstruction of the flood-damaged Orierie Bridge, which restored vital access between communities. “Honouring him is a way of celebrating progress and leadership excellence,” the group stated, reaffirming its commitment to fostering unity and community advancement in Yache and across Nigeria. |
Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has announced that Nigeria made measurable progress in national security, anti-corruption enforcement, and citizen engagement in October 2025, with key indicators showing a decline in violent crimes, an increase in major arrests, and stronger inter-agency collaboration. He dismissed claims suggesting there is a Christian genocide in Nigeria, describing such reports as inaccurate and a result of flawed intelligence from the United States. The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed this on Monday at the October 2025 edition of the Monthly Joint Security Press Briefing (JSPB) held at the NOA Headquarters in Abuja. Issa-Onilu noted that the briefing, organized in collaboration with security, defence, and intelligence agencies, reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and open communication on national security and governance matters. According to the NOA boss, October recorded a 33 percent increase in the arrest of major suspects, rising from 42 in September to 56, owing to stronger intelligence coordination across agencies. Rescue operations also improved, with 27 abducted victims freed, up from 19 the previous month, largely due to rapid response operations in Kogi and Zamfara States. Fatalities from violent crimes dropped from 210 to 185, representing a 12 percent month-to-month reduction, while multiple arms caches were recovered in the North-West and South-East zones. Cross-border security interventions rose from four to seven, reflecting deeper collaboration between the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Department of State Services (DSS). Issa-Onilu said the figures demonstrate measurable synergy among the military, police, DSS, and immigration services, adding that “terror-linked arrests rose by 33 percent, showing proactive use of human and digital intelligence, while rescue operations increased by 40 percent, proof that our security strategy is becoming preventive rather than reactive.” He commended the courage and professionalism of Nigeria’s armed forces, stating that data-driven coordination and citizen intelligence remain critical to sustaining peace and stability nationwide. On anti-corruption efforts, Issa-Onilu reported that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) concluded 15 investigations, filed five new cases, and secured two convictions in October alone, with recoveries totaling ₦840 million and $919,000. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), under its Chairman Mr. Ola Olukoyede, recovered ₦566.3 billion and $411.6 million between 2023 and 2025 across 14 currencies. A total of 1,502 properties were forfeited in the same period, with ₦100 billion reinvested into the Students Loan Scheme and Consumer Credit Scheme. He described this as part of the ‘Renewed Hope Accountability’ framework, turning recoveries into public good, saying that, “These figures demonstrate that recovered assets are now being reinvested into projects that directly impact citizens, rather than remaining idle.” The NOA Director-General further noted significant strides by other regulatory and enforcement agencies in October: “NAFDAC seized over 70 containers of counterfeit and unsafe goods and shut down illegal warehouses in Lagos and Onitsha. “NDLEA dismantled 14 drug syndicates, arrested 1,378 suspects, and secured 251 convictions; NIS rescued 76 victims of human trafficking and processed 15,000 visa applications through its new digital system. “FRSC recorded a 12 percent drop in fatal crashes following its “Ember Months” campaigns; NCoS expanded rehabilitation and mental health outreach for inmates nationwide. “Overall, enforcement actions increased by 28 percent, convictions rose from 210 to 251, and road-crash fatalities dropped by 11 percent. These are clear signs that the nation’s safety indicators are on a steady positive curve.” Between August and October 2025, the NOA intensified nationwide communication on security awareness, civic responsibility, and national unity. The Agency’s outreach, spanning 36 states and the FCT, reached an estimated 32 million Nigerians through over 50 radio and TV stations and digital platforms such as Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram, and the AI-powered CLHEEAN network. Public trust and vigilance, Issa-Onilu said, have improved “measurably,” as verified government information gained wider traction and misinformation declined by 40 percent, “Our message is simple: Trust is Nigeria’s strongest security asset,” he emphasized. He noted that the NOA has expanded grassroots partnerships from 1,050 to 1,460 community clusters, advancing what he called “citizen-centered security communication.” The NOA DG explained that the Joint Security Communication Platform, a coordinated effort among government agencies, is yielding tangible results, aligning security, governance, and public information strategies in what international analysts describe as a “whole-of-government approach.” Issa-Onilu said: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is translating into data-backed outcomes, stronger security, greater transparency, and restored citizen confidence.” Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and collaborative, emphasizing that national security requires active citizen participation. He called on the public to: “Report suspicious activities promptly; Verify information before sharing it; Partner with community, youth, and faith leaders to promote peace; Cooperate with law enforcement agencies, as “your information can save lives.” Issa-Onilu said October 2025 marked “another step forward in Nigeria’s collective journey toward safety and trust. Together, through courage, collaboration, and communication, we are reclaiming public confidence in our institutions. Together we build trust. Together we build peace. Together we build Nigeria.” |
The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on School Feeding, Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, has called on youths especially women across Nigeria to continue believing in themselves and to remain committed to driving positive change in their communities and the nation. She also expressed support for the Reserved Seats Bill for Women being considered by the National Assembly, describing it as a crucial step toward ensuring women’s inclusion in governance and policymaking. Adeniji, disclosed this in Abuja, while addressing youths at the 10th Anniversary and Inauguration Ceremony of the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN), where new national executives of the association were officially sworn in. Themed “Trailblazers: Female Students Leading for National Transformation,” the anniversary celebration also featured inspiring speeches on women’s roles in national development and leadership. She commended the association for its commitment to nurturing young female leaders and shaping them into agents of transformation, describing NFSAN as a “top contender” in promoting governance and social impact among students. She said: “I would urge the youths to continue to believe in themselves, to believe in their passion, to believe in creating a change, especially in their communities and in the society. It’s a breath of fresh air, seeing young women want to create impact within their community. “At the level where we are trying to bring young minds from schools, we are trying to mold them and shape them into becoming pillars of society. So I commend the National Association of Female Students and I want to continue to encourage them to be more than they are.” According to her, the association is making meaningful contributions toward preparing young minds for national development Adeniji also expressed support for the Reserved Seats Bill for Women being considered by the National Assembly, describing it as a crucial step toward ensuring women’s inclusion in governance and policymaking. She added, “I’m glad that the National Assembly is coming up with this reserved seats bill for women. It’s a very important bill. What we are looking at is more seats on the table for women. That is the only way our voices can be heard. “I would continue to tell them not to give up, not to relent. Let’s see how we can work together to ensure that we create the change that we’re looking for. “A woman is not only a home builder, she is a nation builder. When a woman rises in wisdom, leadership, and courage, a community changes, a generation is inspired, and a nation is transformed.” She urged female students to keep advocating for greater participation of women at all levels, from local communities to the national stage, and to work together in creating the change they desire. At the event, a paper titled “Women Spearheading National Transformation” delivered by Ijeoma Emeribe, represented by Pastor Mrs. Sabina Adepoju of Priesthood Stream Church, Abuja, highlighted the central role of women in driving social and spiritual renewal in society. She cited biblical and contemporary examples of women who have demonstrated courage and purpose in leadership, from Deborah and Esther to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, emphasizing that “when women rise, nations rise.” In her inaugural address, the newly inaugurated National President of NFSAN, Comrade Faith Progress Istifanus, pledged to strengthen the association’s role as a formidable voice for female students in Nigeria and a driver of gender inclusion, academic excellence, and leadership development. She outlined key priorities for her tenure, including promoting mentorship, entrepreneurship, and digital empowerment; advocating for gender equity; and building strategic partnerships with government and private institutions. Also speaking, the Chairman of the Gender Education, Engagement, Empowerment, and Entrepreneurship (G4E) Program, Hon. Judith Mayen Etuk-Ogbara, described the anniversary as a celebration of “a decade of resilience and triumph” for Nigerian female students. She challenged NFSAN members to push for greater leadership roles, including producing the first female President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). She said: “This is the time to make history, to produce the first female NANS President. Not by tokenism, but by merit, capacity, and courage.” Etuk-Ogbara urged the new NFSAN leadership to deepen its impact, strengthen partnerships, and remain a platform for mentorship and empowerment, adding that “empowered women don’t wait for history, they make it.”

The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI), on Monday, expressed profound solidarity and unalloyed support for the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following the monumental announcement of Nigeria’s official removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, the GMI described the development as a decisive victory for Nigeria’s economic sovereignty, institutional integrity, and global credibility under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He said: “This achievement, successfully communicated by the Presidency’s strategic team, is not merely a technical compliance milestone; it is a decisive victory for Nigeria’s economic sovereignty, institutional integrity, and global credibility under the Renewed Hope Agenda.” According to Musa, the delisting marks the culmination of the President’s political will and the implementation of far-reaching legal, institutional, and operational reforms within the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework. He added, “For years, the grey listing hampered capital inflows, increased transaction costs for Nigerian businesses, and negatively impacted our financial reputation. “President Tinubu's commitment has now shattered that barrier, signalling to the world that Nigeria is ready for legitimate, large-scale international investment. This strategic victory will unlock new channels of global partnership and accelerate the economic recovery we all desire. “Solidarity from the Grassroots The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative, committed to supporting governance that translates to palpable progress for the common man, stands firmly behind President Tinubu’s administration. “We commend the President for treating this challenge not as a setback, but as a critical call to action, thereby securing a "strategic victory for our economy and a renewed vote of confidence in Nigeria’s financial governance," as noted by the Presidency. “We pledge to intensify our efforts at the grassroots level to communicate the significance of this achievement to every Nigerian, assuring them that the economic pain associated with necessary reforms is yielding tangible, beneficial results.” The group also urged all stakeholders, patriotic citizens, and international partners to recognise this bold step and continue to support the administration’s drive toward a more transparent, stable, and prosperous Nigeria. |
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Nafiu Bala
|
The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has reassured members and the general public of its commitment to restoring the integrity and glory of the party, which it said had been infiltrated by individuals described as “political vagabonds and refugees.” In a statement issued by the Acting National Chairman of the ADC, Hon. Nafiu Bala, the party leadership condemned the activities of persons allegedly parading themselves as members and leaders of the ADC without proper registration or recognition. According to Hon. Bala, the infiltration of such individuals into the party brought along negative traits that disrupted the once peaceful structure of the ADC. Bala said: “The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress the general public, particularly the faithful members of our esteemed party, ADC, to note that the bonafide leaders of this great party is working assiduously leaving no stone unturned in restoring the glory of the party hitherto infiltrated by political vagabonds, Who sneaked into the party through the back door. “The infiltration of these political refugees into our great party infested the party those notorious characteristics they are known with, to wit, Causing confusion amongst party members as witnessed in the burning of party offices in Ekiti State and Kaduna State.” He noted that these elements have a history of imposing leadership arbitrarily, thereby causing unrest and disunity wherever they operate. He added, “ADC Leadership wishes to make it clear that these elements who parambulate as party members without registration to forthwith desist from tempering with the hitherto peaceful ADC structure. ADC is not a refugee camp where political vagabonds sneak in without protocols. “The Leadership wishes to inform these Calibre of people to desist from calling kangaroo congresses in the name of the party having not yet been recognized as bofide party members to avoid attracting legal action against them.” |
By Paul Odenyi As Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu marks two years as the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), it is fitting to reflect on the remarkable digital transformation that has been unfolding under his visionary leadership. Since his appointment in October 2023, the agency has undergone a profound overhaul, embracing modern technology and innovative communication platforms to enhance its service delivery and deepen its engagement with Nigerians across the country. At the heart of this transformation is the agency's commitment to aligning with the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes value reorientation, national unity, and inclusive development. Recognizing the critical role of communication technology in reaching the diverse Nigerian populace, NOA has strategically repositioned itself to leverage digital tools that resonate with today’s information age. One of the flagship achievements in this digital journey is the development and deployment of CLHEEAN, NOA’s virtual assistant powered by Artificial Intelligence. Launched in July 2024, CLHEEAN represents a groundbreaking step in citizen engagement. Available on mobile devices and computers, CLHEEAN provides Nigerians with instant, accurate answers to questions about government policies, programs, and projects. This AI-powered assistant is designed to be accessible, initially communicating in English with plans to soon support multiple Nigerian languages, thereby bridging communication gaps and fostering inclusivity. CLHEEAN is more than just a digital tool; it embodies a new era of interactive governance. By enabling citizens to engage directly with government information, it promotes transparency and empowers Nigerians to participate actively in national development. The virtual assistant also serves as a friendly guide, educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities and encouraging positive civic behavior. The innovative concept of a virtual "Superhero" like CLHEEAN, which can remind users about everyday civic duties such as proper waste disposal, exemplifies NOA’s creative approach to attitudinal change. Complementing CLHEEAN’s capabilities is the NOA Content Factory, a digital hub dedicated to producing high-quality, timely content that explains government policies and initiatives in clear, relatable language. This content factory plays a pivotal role in demystifying complex policy matters, making them accessible to all Nigerians, including the youth and other key demographics. The agency’s focus on digital content creation ensures that information dissemination keeps pace with the fast-evolving media landscape. NOA has also revitalized its digital infrastructure and platforms, which had suffered neglect in previous years. This includes the launch of the NOA mobile app, Mobiliser, introduced in March 2024, which offers a direct communication channel between the government and citizens, particularly targeting the youth demographic. The app facilitates real-time updates, feedback, and interactive engagement, fostering a two-way dialogue that enhances government accountability and responsiveness. In addition to mobile platforms, NOA is expanding its broadcast capabilities with the impending unveiling of new television and radio studios. These state-of-the-art facilities will enable the agency to produce and disseminate news, features, and sectoral programs that highlight government policies and development projects. By harnessing both traditional and digital media, NOA ensures comprehensive outreach that cuts across urban and rural divides. The digital transformation at NOA is also characterized by strategic partnerships and collaborations. For example, the agency has pledged support to the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON) to promote national health security through digital campaigns. Leveraging its presence in all 774 local government areas and extensive demographic databases, NOA is uniquely positioned to reach Nigerians who are not active on social media, ensuring no one is left behind in vital information dissemination. Moreover, NOA’s digital initiatives are designed to complement its traditional grassroots engagement methods. While embracing technology, the agency continues to value the importance of house-to-house campaigns and village square interactions, recognizing that these remain effective in fostering trust and community participation. This hybrid approach ensures that the agency’s messaging is both modern and deeply rooted in local realities. The leadership style of Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu has been instrumental in driving this digital revolution. His focus on value-driven change, staff motivation, and continuous training has reinvigorated the agency’s workforce, equipping them with the skills and tools necessary to operate effectively in a digital environment. The Expanded Strategic Management Retreat held in Abuja brought together senior officers to align their roles with the new digital agenda, emphasizing the importance of embracing technology to fulfill NOA’s mandate. Former Directors-General and stakeholders have lauded the current DG’s innovative approach, noting that while digital transformation is vital, the agency must not abandon the proven methods of the past. This balanced perspective ensures that NOA remains relevant and effective in a rapidly changing communication landscape. In conclusion, the digital transformation of the National Orientation Agency under Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu’s leadership marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s public communication sector. By harnessing artificial intelligence, mobile technology, digital content production, and strategic partnerships. NOA is redefining how government policies and programs are communicated to the Nigerian people. This transformation not only enhances transparency and citizen engagement but also fosters a culture of informed participation and national pride. As the agency continues to innovate and expand its digital footprint, |
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, hasvcondemned in strong terms the verbal attack launched by the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abdullahi, against former Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. It recalled that Abdullahi, while appearing on Arise Television earlier in the week, had claimed that Ugwuanyi’s political influence had diminished in Enugu State. Abdullahi went further to mock the former governor, alleging that he had reduced himself to a personal aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, “literally carrying Wike’s bag.” Reacting to the statement, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, in a statement, described Abdullahi’s comments as “reckless, baseless and a product of selective amnesia.” Okwu said it was either the PDP spokesman had chosen to ignore Ugwuanyi’s towering political stature or was deliberately attempting to malign his image. Okwu said: “Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as governor of Enugu State recorded the highest percentage of votes ever witnessed in the state during his second term election in 2019. He said: “His percentage of victory is a history that may not be easy for anyone to break in the State again. “That His Excellency, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is a gentle man and has maintained that posture does not in any way diminish his political sagacity and acceptability in Enugu State. “Two years after leaving office, Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu) still remains very popular and much admired by the people. “It is, therefore, illogical and baseless for the PDP spokesman to claim that Ugwuanyi’s influence has diminished.” Okwu added, “The anger of the PDP spokesman stems from Ugwuanyi’s defection to the APC, alongside Governor Peter Mbah. We know where his anger is coming from; the PDP is all tears for losing such a calibre of people to the APC. “But the party is behind its own woes; it should reap what it sowed by neglecting the South-East despite drawing its strength from the zone over the years. “The PDP should cry a river, it won’t change anything. We are solidly behind Ugwuanyi and Mbah for dumping the party. We also re-affirm our confidence and belief in Ugwuanyi as a leader, with whom we are well pleased.” |
The Forum of Victims of Separatist Violence (FVSV), a coalition representing families of slain civilians, traders, farmers, and security personnel, on Sunday, voiced strong opposition to recent calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement signed by Chief Dr. Ernest Ezenwo, Chairman, and Mrs. Godiya Sunday, Secretary, the forum said it speaks “from a place of deep pain and unhealed wounds,” urging the Federal Government to resist political pressure and allow the judiciary to complete Kanu’s trial in accordance with the law. The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to stand firm, uphold the principle of separation of powers, and allow the judiciary to handle the case without interference. The statement read: “We speak not from politics, but from sorrow. From the graves of our loved ones. From the burnt remains of our homes and businesses. From the silence of children who will never again hear their parents’ voices. “We have watched with anguish as some groups call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the very man whose hate-filled messages and reckless incitements inspired violence, killings, and destruction. We say no, not out of hatred, but out of love for justice and peace. “Releasing him under political pressure would not heal this nation, it would deepen the pain, mock the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, and betray the blood of those who stood to defend Nigeria’s unity." The group accused Kanu of being the originator of hate-filled and inciting rhetoric that allegedly inspired waves of violence, killings, and destruction across parts of the country, particularly in the Southeast. The FVSV warned that releasing Kanu under political pressure would amount to mocking the sacrifices of Nigeria’s security personnel and innocent citizens who lost their lives defending national unity. He said: “Our gallant soldiers, police officers, and others died in the line of duty, protecting citizens and the flag. Their widows still cry. Their children still ask, ‘Why did Daddy not come home?’ Their courage must not be rewarded with injustice. “We are not asking for vengeance. We are asking for fairness. We are asking for a Nigeria where the law protects both the weak and the brave.” The forum appealed to Nigerians to let justice, rather than politics or sentiment, guide national decisions, adding that, “Let the cries of the victims and the blood of our heroes remind us that peace without justice is merely silence before the next storm.” |
The Labour Party Candidates Forum (LPCF), has condemned what it described as the blatant disobedience of court judgments sacking Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), accusing both Abure and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of disregarding the rule of law. The forum reaffirmed its loyalty and solidarity to the leadership of Senator Usman and Senator Nwokocha, urging all aggrieved members to return and join efforts to rebuild the party. The forum’s chairman and the Labour Party’s 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Barr. Okeme Adejoh, disclosed in Abuja, during a press briefing, the group decried the continued recognition of Abure despite clear judicial pronouncements terminating his leadership. The forums reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and internal democracy, vowing to continue its efforts to protect the integrity of the Labour Party and ensure compliance with judicial decisions. Adejoh said the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, and the Federal High Court judgment of August 15, 2025, both declared that Abure’s tenure had expired, yet INEC and Abure “continue to act in contempt of the courts.” He said: “The judgments of the courts are meant to be obeyed by the parties involved, not the other way round. If court judgments are not obeyed, then they are not judgments but tissue paper.” The forum criticized Abure’s recent participation in INEC’s quarterly meeting with political parties, describing the move as a “direct affront” to the authority of the judiciary and “a contempt of both the Supreme Court and Federal High Court judgments.” Adejoh emphasized that the forum would not stand idly by while court orders are flouted, warning that members are prepared to explore all legal means, including peaceful protests, to ensure compliance with the rulings. He called on INEC to remove Abure’s name from its official portal and recognize Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman as the Interim National Chairman and Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the National Secretary, in accordance with the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decision. He added, “INEC must not allow its name to be dragged into the mud by illegal former executives of the Labour Party who have chosen to disobey court judgments.” Also speaking, the immediate past National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, Comrade Eragbe Anslem, alleged that there was a “conspiracy” against the party within certain political circles. He said: “There is a Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which dismissed the Federal High Court judgment of October 8, 2024, that accorded Abure recognition as chairman of the party. The Supreme Court also dismissed the Appeal Court judgment of January 17, 2025, that similarly upheld that lower court’s decision.” Anslem maintained that the Supreme Court ruling remains final and binding, stressing that “any attempt to disregard it is not only illegal but contemptuous.” In his remarks, the 2023 Ebonyi State governorship candidate and Secretary of the Labour Party Candidates Forum, Comrade Splendour Oko Eze, also condemned the disregard for judicial authority, insisting that the Supreme Court’s decision on Abure’s removal remains final and binding. He said: “There is no court in Nigeria that is higher than the Supreme Court. As far as the Supreme Court has ruled that Julius Abure’s tenure has expired, there is no kangaroo arrangement that can overturn that.” Eze appealed to the newly confirmed INEC Chairman, describing him as a lawyer who should “understand the law better,” to respect the Supreme Court ruling submitted to the commission. He added, “Nigeria can only get better when the laws of the land are obeyed. Disobedience to court orders breeds incompetence, autocracy, and anarchy. That will not augur well for the country. “The Labour Party has come to stay, and it remains the only party that can give Nigerians true victory come 2027. We invite all genuine members to join us as we rebuild the party.”

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has condemned the planned nationwide protests calling for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the move as a dangerous blackmail against the Nigerian state. The group accused certain politicians and activists of hypocrisy and ethnic bias, warning that their current agitation for Kanu’s release is a calculated political maneuver ahead of the 2027 elections. The National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, said the agitation, allegedly spearheaded by some Igbo political and cultural elites, activist Omoyele Sowore, and a few “unpatriotic northern collaborators,” amounts to a direct attempt to intimidate the judiciary and destabilize the country’s fragile peace. The group recalled since 2016, Nnamdi Kanu has been accused of using IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), to promote hate, division, and violence, resulting in widespread killings, destruction of public infrastructure, and targeted attacks against security operatives and Northerners in the Southeast. In 2017, it issued the historic Kaduna Declaration, warning both Nigeria and the international community about the growing threat of IPOB’s violent separatism. Charanchi maintained that recent events have vindicated its position, arguing that “unchecked extremism only grows into full-blown terrorism.” CNG also said it had petitioned global organizations such as the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS, and the International Criminal Court (ICC), detailing IPOB’s alleged human rights abuses and calls for ethnic cleansing. He stressed that no amount of protest, media propaganda, or emotional manipulation would erase IPOB’s atrocities or compel the Nigerian state to compromise the rule of law. Charanchi said: “The Coalition of Northern Groups reaffirms that no nation can survive when treason is rewarded and justice is politicized. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu under mob pressure would not heal Nigeria; it would embolden lawlessness and erode public confidence in justice. “The CNG stands firm in defense of the rule of law, national unity, and the memory of those who paid the ultimate price for peace. The group calls on President Tinubu, political leaders, and Nigerians at large to choose justice over sentiment, and national interest over sectional appeasement. Nigeria must not bow to emotional blackmail. The law must take its course, for without justice, there can be no peace.” CNG further noted that more than 400 security personnel had been killed in IPOB-related attacks, leaving behind widows, orphans, and grieving families, insisting that justice for these victims must never be compromised. The Coalition made several calls and demands, urging both the government and citizens to uphold justice and resist intimidation. He added, “CNG condemns unequivocally the planned protests for Kanu’s release, describing them as reckless, provocative, and a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and judiciary. “Urges the Federal Government to see Kanu’s trial to its logical conclusion, ensuring that justice is neither delayed nor diluted under political pressure. Calls on security agencies to remain alert and proactive in preventing any breakdown of law and order during these orchestrated protests. “Demands an immediate investigation into individuals and organizations funding, coordinating, or promoting these destabilizing protests under the guise of human rights advocacy. “Warring with the sacred principles of separation of powers and judicial independence President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reclaim his statesmanship by resisting every attempt to cajole or blackmail the Presidency into interfering. “Appeals to patriotic Nigerians, especially peace-loving citizens of the Southeast, to reject calls to anarchy, embrace dialogue, and support genuine efforts toward development, peace, and unity.” Citing reports between 2021 and 2024, the group alleged that IPOB and ESN were responsible for over 387 attacks, resulting in more than 600 deaths and the displacement of over 80,000 people in the Southeast. During the #EndSARS protests of 2020, CNG accused Nnamdi Kanu of hijacking the movement through inflammatory broadcasts, which, according to the group, helped turn a peaceful protest into chaos that led to arson, looting, and attacks on security formations. “Over 100 police stations were burnt, the Oba of Lagos’s palace was desecrated, and property worth over ₦200 billion was destroyed. These are not the actions of a freedom fighter but of someone bent on tearing the country apart,” he said. |
A coalition of Northern groups under the aegis of the Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his recent declaration supporting planned protests to demand the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group described Atiku’s position as “deeply inconsistent and ethically troubling,” arguing that it raises serious concerns about his credibility and suitability to lead Nigeria. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Sama Musa, the coalition said Atiku’s stance goes beyond a mere political comment, insisting that it exposes a “profound disregard for the lives and welfare of countless Nigerians who suffered as a result of Kanu’s incitement.” He said: “The tragic loss of life, particularly among the over 500 Northerners and law enforcement personnel attributed to Kanu's incitement, cannot be overlooked or trivialized. “These are not mere statistics; they represent families torn apart, communities shattered, and a collective grief that resonates through the fabric of society. Atiku Abubakar's response to such a humanitarian crisis is not only a reflection of their values but also a litmus test of their commitment to the people they aspire to lead. “Atiku Abubakar's apparent indifference to this crisis is deeply concerning. By advocating for the unconditional release of a figure whose actions have incited violence and division, he sends a troubling message: that the lives lost and the suffering endured by countless individuals in the North are secondary to political expediency. “This stance raises significant ethical questions. How can a leader claim to represent the interests of all citizens while simultaneously disregarding the pain and suffering of a substantial segment of the population? The Northern Youth Frontiers believes that a leader must embody empathy and understanding, qualities that seem to be lacking in Abubakar's current approach. “In light of these considerations, it is imperative for the electorate to engage in a critical assessment of Atiku Abubakar's suitability as a presidential candidate. The political landscape is rife with choices, and the future of Nigeria hinges on the decisions made by its citizens.” The Northern Youth Frontiers further urged Nigerians to critically evaluate Atiku’s political intentions, stressing that leadership should be measured not by political alliances but by compassion, accountability, and integrity. He added, “The Northern Youth Frontiers emphasizes the importance of accountability in leadership. A leader's actions should align with their words, and any disconnect between the two can erode public trust. Atiku Abubakar's support for Kanu's release, without a clear acknowledgment of the consequences of such actions, may leave many questioning his priorities. “Do we believe that a leader who overlooks the suffering of his constituents can effectively address the myriad challenges facing Nigeria? The answer, we contend, is a resounding no. “The Northern Youth Frontiers also recognizes the broader implications of Abubakar's stance on national unity and cohesion. In a country characterized by diverse ethnicities, religions, and cultures, the need for leaders who can bridge divides is more pressing than ever. “By failing to address the ramifications of Kanu's actions, Abubakar risks exacerbating existing tensions and fostering an environment of mistrust. A leader must be a unifying force, capable of bringing people together in pursuit of common goals. The electorate must consider whether Abubakar possesses the vision and capability to fulfill this essential role. “As we navigate the complexities of the political arena, the Northern Youth Frontiers calls upon all citizens to engage in informed discourse about their leaders. It is not enough to accept Atiku Abubakar’s rhetoric at face value; we must demand accountability and consistency from those who seek to represent us. “The future of Nigeria depends on our collective ability to scrutinize the actions and statements of our leaders, ensuring they align with the values we hold dear as a nation.” The group urged voters to prioritize candidates who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the welfare and unity of all Nigerians, regardless of region or background. “As we approach the next election cycle, let us prioritize candidates who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the welfare of all citizens, regardless of their background. The path to a more united and prosperous Nigeria lies in our hands, and it is our responsibility to choose leaders who will champion the cause of inclusivity and justice for all” |

The path to a more united and prosperous Nigeria lies in our hands, and it is our responsibility to choose leaders who will champion the cause of inclusivity and justice for all” |
The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has strongly condemned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent call for the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, describing the stance as “foolhardy, arrogant, and deeply contradictory.” In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group accused Atiku of political hypocrisy and inconsistency, saying his position raises questions about his commitment to justice, national unity, and the rule of law. He said: “Atiku's political philosophy and personal integrity. His stance can be characterized as foolhardy, arrogant, and deeply contradictory, raising serious questions about his commitment to justice and national unity. “Atiku Abubakar, in his pursuit of political capital, has chosen to align himself with a figure who stands accused of grave offenses against the Nigerian state. Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing serious charges, including terrorism and treasonable felony, which involve incitement to insurrection, the killings of security personnel, and the destruction of public and private property. “These are not mere allegations; they represent a significant threat to the stability and security of our nation. By advocating for Kanu's unconditional release, Atiku not only undermines the rule of law but also sends a dangerous message to those who have suffered at the hands of Kanu’s actions. The group expressed dismay that Atiku would “challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to pardon small-scale offenders while simultaneously supporting Kanu’s release,” describing it as a “glaring contradiction. He added, “How can one advocate for leniency towards a figure accused of inciting violence and chaos while condemning the same leniency for lesser offenders? This inconsistency is not merely a flaw in his argument; it is a reflection of a deeper insecurity in his political identity. “We must consider the implications of Atiku's stance on the families of the security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. How does Atiku expect the families of these brave individuals to react to the prospect of Kanu's release? What message does this send to the families of innocent citizens who have also suffered due to the violence and unrest incited by Kanu and his followers? “To advocate for Kanu's release without justice being served is to disregard the pain and suffering of countless Nigerians who have been affected by his actions. It is an affront to the memories of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. “Atiku's call for Kanu's release risks undermining the morale of our security forces. The men and women who serve in the armed forces do so with the understanding that their sacrifices are recognized and that justice will prevail. To release Kanu as Atiku proposes would send a demoralizing message: that those who threaten the integrity of the state can evade accountability. “Such a precedent would not only discourage current personnel from making sacrifices but may also dissuade potential recruits from joining the armed forces. The implications for national security are profound and troubling. “It is important to recognize that the rule of law must prevail in all circumstances. Nnamdi Kanu must face trial and, if found guilty, be punished appropriately for his actions. Justice is not merely a concept to be manipulated for political gain; it is a fundamental principle that underpins the very fabric of our society. Atiku Abubakar’s support for Kanu’s release, therefore, represents a dangerous deviation from this principle and an affront to the rule of law. “The Democracy Watch Initiative categorically rejects Atiku Abubakar's support for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. This position is not only unjustifiable but also reflects a troubling inconsistency that undermines his credibility as a leader.” The group urged Nigerians to critically reassess Atiku’s suitability for leadership positions in light of what it described as “his indifference to the tragic loss of life, particularly the over 500 Northerners and law enforcement officers killed as a result of Kanu’s incitement. “A leader must demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of all citizens, and Atiku's lack of response to such a grave humanitarian crisis suggests a troubling disregard for the very lives he seeks to represent. Therefore, we urge the public to reconsider their support for his candidacy.” |
The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA), has strongly condemned what it described as a “provocative and insensitive” campaign by activist Omoyele Sowore, calling for the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Kayode Richard Olatunji, the group said Sowore’s campaign was misguided and undermined the collective efforts of Nigerians, especially communities in the Southwest, to recover from the devastating effects of the unrest allegedly incited by Kanu during the #EndSARS protests of 2020. Recall that in October 2020, tens of thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to protest against police brutality, particularly the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protests, known as the #EndSARS demonstrations began as a peaceful call for justice and reform. He said: “The #EndSARS protests represented a collective yearning for a better Nigeria, free from the oppressive practices of law enforcement agencies. However, this hopeful narrative took a dark turn when Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), intervened. “His incendiary remarks on Biafra radio incited violence, calling for the killing of security personnel and the destruction of public and private properties. Kanu’s rhetoric not only undermined the peaceful nature of the protests but also provided a dangerous rallying point for those seeking to exploit the situation for their own agendas. “One such incident was the brazen attack on the palace of the Oba of Lagos by members of the IPOB acting on Kanu’s incitement. The attack resulted in the theft of significant sums of money and the desecration of a cultural institution. “The invasion of the Oba of Lagos's palace by IPOB members was not just an act of vandalism; it represented a profound breach of cultural and traditional authority. The palace, a symbol of the Yoruba monarchy and a site of historical significance, was stormed by individuals who, reportedly incited by the group's leadership, sought to assert their political agenda through violence. “The act of whisking away the Oba’s staff of authority, a revered symbol of kingship, underscored the gravity of the situation. This act was not merely a theft; it was an affront to the very fabric of Yoruba culture and an attempt to undermine the traditional leadership that plays a crucial role in community cohesion. “The theft of $2 million and N17 million (approximately N787 million) during the raid further illustrates the chaos caused by Kanu’s incitement. While the #EndSARS movement aimed to address police brutality, the actions of the IPOB thugs revealed a stark contrast between the ideals of the protest and the reality of the violence that ensued. “Such actions not only diverted attention from the original goals of the protests but also fueled narratives of lawlessness and disorder that detracted from the legitimacy of the movement.” OPA also warned that rekindling such divisive advocacy could reignite old tensions, threatening the peace and unity of the Southwest. He added, “The aftermath of Kanu's incitement was catastrophic. In Lagos and its surrounding areas, IPOB thugs seized the opportunity presented by the #EndSARS movement to unleash a wave of violence and destruction. On October 21, 2020, clashes erupted at critical locations such as the Lekki Toll Gate, Surulere, Oyingbo, Alausa, Mushin, Ikotun, Agege, and Somolu. “The violence was not confined to Lagos alone; it spread to other states, with prison riots occurring simultaneously at Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons. The once peaceful protests devolved into a nightmare, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread destruction. “The chaos extended beyond Lagos, with significant damage and looting in various states. In Ondo State, the Okitipupa Oil Palm Plc was attacked, with buildings razed and offices looted, resulting in losses estimated at N300 million. “Similarly, in Ilorin, Kwara State, the Shoprite Mall and numerous businesses were heavily looted, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Osun State experienced its own share of mayhem, with stores and farms looted and properties destroyed, amounting to losses of around N5 billion. “These incidents underscored how quickly a movement rooted in the quest for justice was hijacked by Kanu, leading to anarchy and suffering. “As stewards of our people’s welfare, we cannot stand idly by while calls for his release trivialize the suffering experienced by those whose livelihoods have been disrupted or destroyed. The Odua People’s Assembly believes that accountability is a cornerstone of justice. Kanu must face the consequences of his actions, as should any individual who incites violence and chaos in our society. “The campaign for Kanu’s unconditional release is therefore a direct affront to the memories of those who have suffered due to the unrest. It disregards the struggles of countless families who have lost their homes, businesses, and loved ones as a result of the turmoil he instigated. It is insensitive to the realities of our communities, many of which are still grappling with the aftermath of violence and destruction. ”This campaign threatens to reignite tensions that we have worked hard to quell. The Southwest has always been a region known for its resilience and unity, and we must not allow divisive rhetoric to fracture our bonds. The Assembly urged the Federal Government to remain firm and ensure that Kanu’s prosecution runs its full course, saying doing otherwise would embolden future agitators to use violence as a political tool. “The Odua People’s Assembly categorically rejects the campaign for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. We view it as a dangerous and irresponsible call that disregards the pain and suffering of countless individuals in the Southwest. We stand united in our commitment to justice, peace, and the restoration of our communities." They added. |
The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised serious concerns over the recent meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some individuals claiming to be Adamawa ADC stakeholders, describing the gathering as illegitimate and politically motivated. In a statement issued by Dr. Christopher Okechuk, the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the ADC, the party’s leadership expressed strong disapproval of the meeting, calling it a “sham” designed to create a false sense of legitimacy and support. The ADC leadership maintained that the meeting neither had the backing of the party’s national structure nor represented the true interests of the ADC in Adamawa State. Okechuk said: “The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) brings to the fore a pressing concern that warrants scrutiny. The recent meeting between Atiku and the purported Adamawa ADC stakeholders reeks of illegitimacy and raises several questions. “A closer examination of the attendees reveals a troubling trend - many are former members of the APC and PDP who abandoned their parties due to perceived irrelevance.” The ADC urged the public, as well as political observers, to scrutinize such developments carefully and insist on transparency and due process in all political collaborations and coalitions moving forward. He added, “This development begs the question: what prompted these individuals to suddenly become relevant in a new political setting? Their presence at the meeting appears to be a calculated publicity stunt rather than a genuine attempt to contribute to the progress of the ADC. “We strongly argue that this meeting was a sham, a desperate attempt to create the illusion of support and legitimacy. The purpose and outcomes of the meeting have been called into question, and it remains unclear what tangible benefits will arise from this gathering. “The meeting between Atiku and the so-called Adamawa ADC stakeholders lacks authenticity and legitimacy. The questionable credentials of the attendees and the dubious purpose of the meeting raise serious concerns about the true intentions of the convener. “We call on the public to scrutinize this development and insist on transparency and accountability from the coalition leaders seeking to join the ADC.” |
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) on Monday announced the establishment of the Northern Nigeria Economic Development Council (NNEDC), a new coordinating body to drive industrialization, attract investment, and harmonize development policies across the northern region. The announcement followed the successful conclusion of the Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialization Summit (NNIIS) in Abuja, where participants pledged over $10 billion in new investments across mining, agriculture, and power. In a communiqué signed by the Chairman of the NEF Board of Trustees, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, the Forum said the NNEDC would serve as the institutional framework for implementing a Northern Nigeria Economic Development Masterplan, focusing on security, policy coherence, and private capital as pillars for the region’s economic transformation. The two-day summit, themed “Unlocking Strategic Opportunities in Mining, Agriculture, and Power (MAP 2025),” brought together an extensive coalition of stakeholders, including Federal Government officials, northern governors, the NNDC, private sector leaders, development partners, financiers, academics, and civil society representatives. He said: “The summit also featured exhibitions of investment opportunities by the 19 Northern Nigerian States’ Investment Promotion Agencies and Corporate Sponsors and Deal Room/Matchmaking (B2B, B2G) sessions. Major investments across Mining, Agriculture and Power worth over $10 billion were pledged over the next 5 years." Delegations from Turkey, India, Canada, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia also attended, expressing readiness to invest billions of dollars in the region’s growth sectors. The summit featured strategic showcases, high-level addresses, panel discussions, and masterclasses exploring sectoral strengths, challenges, and investment opportunities in mining, agriculture, and power. Declaring the summit open, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to reviving Northern Nigeria’s economy through partnership and institutional capital mobilization. NEF, in turn, expressed appreciation for the President’s support and pledged to ensure accountability in delivering on this national promise. At the event, governors from the North West, North East, and North Central regions signed the Northern Nigeria Economic Development Charter, committing their states to a unified regional economic vision. The newly created NNEDC will operate under the joint oversight of NEF and the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NNGF), coordinating the implementation of the Northern Nigeria Economic Development Masterplan (NNEDM). A Joint Implementation and Monitoring Taskforce (JIMT) will oversee transitional actions and publish an operational roadmap within 60 days. The NNEDC will issue quarterly scorecards to track measurable outcomes such as jobs created, energy capacity added, and investments mobilized. Also speaking, Prof. D.D. Sheni, Director-General of NEF, said the event marked “a decisive pivot from rhetoric to execution” in Northern Nigeria’s development journey. He said: “With security as the bedrock, policy coherence as the framework, and private capital as the engine, Northern Nigeria can transform its endowments into sustainable growth.” NEF reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive prosperity as it leads the region into a new era of coordinated economic transformation. He added, “Significant deposits across states (e.g., gold, copper, lithium, tantalite, granite). Scope for local processing and mineral-based industrialization; regional supplier ecosystems. “Illegal mining, environmental degradation, social conflict risks without strong ESG safeguards. Inadequate data on mineral resources. Need for credible, consistent permitting; royalties clarity; community engagement; dispute resolution; E&S compliance. Need to reform mining and mineral resource development governance. “Nigeria’s per-capita electricity consumption is ~120 kWh vs ~1,200 kWh global average; >70% of generated power is consumed in the South, leaving the North with the highest energy poverty (<40% access in many areas). “Hydro assets in/serving the region include Shiroro (600 MW), Kainji (800 MW), Jebba (540 MW), Kashimbila (40 MW), Dadin Kowa (40 MW), Tiga (10 MW), yet access and reliability remain low due to transmission and distribution bottlenecks. “Noted constraints include vandalism and capacity limitations on Shiroro–Kaduna (Mando) 330 kV Lines 1 & 2, under-utilization due to missing bays on Kaduna–Jos 330 kV Line 2, partial outages on April (Enugu)–Jos 330 kV double circuit, and an early-stage quad-conductor Shiroro–Mando upgrade project. High technical, commercial, and collection losses; energy theft; policy inconsistency; insecurity around network assets. “Solar: 8–9 hours/day; ~5.32–6.24 kWh/m²/day insolation. Wind: >6.5 m/s zones (e.g., Jos Plateau, Sokoto, Katsina, Borno, Taraba). Biomass: agricultural residues and livestock waste. Gasification: opportunities in coal/solid-waste-to-syngas for distributed generation. “Participants emphasized mobilizing capital-market instruments (infrastructure funds, sukuk/green bonds, project bonds) to finance generation, transmission, distribution, and off-grid/mini-grid solutions.” Adopt standardized PPP frameworks and model contracts, with transparent procurement and risk-allocation, to accelerate infrastructure delivery. Institutionalize land administration reforms (digitized cadastre, clear titling, time-bound consent), with Community Benefit Agreements and grievance redress mechanisms. Launch a Northern Nigeria Capital Mobilization Programme leveraging DFIs, pension funds, sovereign and diaspora capital; structure blended-finance vehicles and thematic instruments (green/sukuk/infrastructure/project bonds). Digitize the regional economy: expand broadband, shared data platforms, digital ID/payment rails, and digital literacy to deepen inclusion and reduce informality. Establish a Security–Investment Coordination Taskforce linking security agencies, states, traditional/community institutions, and operators to protect corridors, energy assets, and mining sites. Adopt ESG & transparency standards (e.g., EITI-style disclosures for mining; climate and social safeguards for all major projects). |
The Cross River State Chapter of the Niger Delta Progressive Youth Leadership Foundation (ND-PYLF), has called on Cross River State, Governor Bassey Otu, to stop using Okpoku Bridge in Akreha, which links to the Yache community as a tool for political advantage. The youths said that the people of Yache deserve concrete action rather than political promises. In a statement by the Secretary of the group, Engr. Sunday Odey Ogbudu, lamented the prolonged neglect of the bridge, which he said has left the Yache community cut off from economic opportunities, basic services, and political participation. Ogbudu said: “The Okpoku Bridge is a critical infrastructure for our people. It should not be used as a political company or bargaining tool but rather treated as a priority project for the overall good of the community.” He lamented that the Yache community has suffered for years due to the poor state of the bridge, which has hindered trade, mobility, and access to essential services. He urged the governor to take immediate steps toward the rehabilitation and full utilization of the bridge, warning that continued neglect would further isolate the area and stunt development. He added, “The Okpoku Bridge is more than just a passage; it is a lifeline for our people. It connects Yache to surrounding communities and remains key to trade, commerce, and political mobilization. “We therefore call on His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, to consider full utilization of this bridge as a priority project. The continued neglect of the bridge could isolate communities in the region, hamper agricultural trade, and weaken political participation.” The group further appealed to political leaders from Cross River North to rally behind the project, insisting that the welfare and development of the people should come before political interests. |
The Students’ Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG-SW) and the Students’ Union Government (SUG) have expressed mixed reactions to President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive making compliance with the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) a compulsory requirement for mobilisation into, or exemption from, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. While some student leaders hailed the initiative as a bold and necessary reform, others criticised its timing and feasibility, warning that it could become burdensome for students and institutions struggling with limited resources. Reacting to the development, the National Coordinator of the Students’ Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG-SW), Comrade Hassan Adamu, welcomed the policy, describing it as a groundbreaking step in combating academic credential fraud and promoting research integrity. Adamu said: “It is a welcome development. The policy establishes a national, unified digital platform for managing, preserving, and verifying academic records and publications across Nigeria's tertiary institutions to combat credential fraud and promote research integrity. The mandatory requirement will help to promote compliance.” He noted that the platform would offer significant benefits to students by providing visibility for their academic work and protecting them against intellectual property theft. Addressing concerns about data safety, Adamu assured that the platform would be secure and user-friendly. He added, “It is an opportunity because it will help individuals to project their work, expertise, and prevent intellectual theft such as plagiarism. “Yes, this is the unique aspect of the policy, it rewards creativity and innovation, thereby enabling students to secure grants from within and outside the country. “I don't think the work will be unsecured since all the work uploaded will need to be restricted. I don't think it will affect students negatively. It is simply the NERD website, and it will be user-friendly.” However, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Comrade Alex Emmanuel, urged caution, describing the policy as a potentially transformative reform that must be carefully implemented to avoid unintended hardships. Emmanuel said: “I think this policy has potential, especially as a reform aimed at strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system. “If implemented well with adequate infrastructure, safeguards, fairness, and support it could become more of an opportunity than just a hurdle. But the devil is in execution, that’s where Nigerian students may feel stressed.” He noted that Nigeria’s history of policy announcements often outpaces institutional capacity, warning that many graduates, particularly from less resourced institutions, may perceive the policy as an additional burden rather than an opportunity. The NERD policy is designed to digitise, unify, and safeguard Nigeria’s academic records while enhancing their global credibility. By linking compliance with NYSC mobilisation, President Tinubu’s directive places significant responsibility on both students and tertiary institutions to adapt swiftly to the new digital system. |
As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to move beyond ceremonial celebrations and embrace a renewed sense of responsibility, patriotism, and value-driven citizenship that reflect the ideals upon which the country was founded. The Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in his Independence Day goodwill message to Nigerians, called on citizens to use the moment to reflect deeply on what it means to be a Nigerian, drawing strength from the nation's diversity, resilience, and shared aspirations for unity, peace, and progress. Issa-Onilu stressed that Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary presents Nigerians with another opportunity to rededicate their lives to the core national values of discipline, integrity, self-reliance, and social justice. “The future of Nigeria depends not just on leaders in office, but on how every citizen chooses to uphold these values in everyday life,” he said. While highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to revive the economy, he urged Nigerians to embrace this year’s celebration as a call to deepen their commitment to nation-building through civic responsibility, volunteerism, and active community participation. In a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Communication and Media, Mr. Paul Odenyi, the Agency noted that true patriotism is expressed not only through symbolic acts but more importantly in the daily conduct of citizens, by upholding national values, showing respect for national symbols, and adhering to the rule of law. Issa-Onilu also charged institutions of learning, faith-based organisations, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to use the occasion to lead community conversations around the national identity, cultural preservation, and the importance of active citizenship in a democratic society. He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to sustained advocacy for civic values, public awareness on government programmes, and national unity, urging Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to proudly reaffirm their allegiance to the nation and work collectively towards building the Nigeria of our dreams. |
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by its National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has disassociated itself from a factional group claiming to operate under the name Coalition of African Democratic Congress. The party also announced plans to launch an upgraded membership registration portal as part of efforts to strengthen its structures and expand participation. In a statement on Friday, the party’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Christopher O. Okechukwu, dismissed reports of a meeting purportedly held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, by the self-styled coalition. Okechukwu said: “We wish to emphasize that there is no recognized association or coalition within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) bearing the name "Coalition of African Democratic Congress." The only legitimate entity recognized under the Electoral Act is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a registered political party. “In light of this clarification, we are excited to announce the imminent launch of our membership registration portal. Our ICT team is actively engaged in portal upgrade and system update to enhance the party's online platform to ensure seamless functionality. “And also to Integrate new features to streamline the membership registration process. The upgraded portal will enable efficient onboarding of new members, ensuring a smooth and secure registration experience. “As part of our efforts to ensure the authenticity and integrity of our party membership, we are introducing enhanced security features for the new membership cards. The new membership cards, slated for issuance during the revalidation and registration exercise in November 2025, will boast the following security features.” As part of its upcoming revalidation and registration exercise scheduled for November 2025, the ADC will roll out new membership cards with enhanced security features. These include: He added, “Signature of the National Chairman: The membership card will carry the signature of our National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, adding an extra layer of authenticity. State Code: A unique state code will be embedded in the card to verify the member's state of origin. “Local Government Code: A local government code will also be included to further authenticate the member's identity and locality. These advanced security features are designed to: Prevent Tampering: Make it difficult for unauthorized individuals to alter or forge membership cards. “Verify Authenticity: Enable easy verification of the card's authenticity by party officials and stakeholders. Protect Member Identity: Safeguard the identity and interests of genuine party members. “With these enhanced security features, we expect to: Enhance Party Credibility: Strengthen the credibility and integrity of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) membership. Prevent Unauthorized Access: Limit access to party activities and resources to only authorized and genuine members. “Foster Trust: Build trust among members, stakeholders, and the general public in the party's membership registration process. We invite all well-wishers and interested Nigerians who wish to join the African Democratic Congress to await further instructions on the membership registration process. We look forward to welcoming new members into our fold as we continue to build a stronger, more inclusive party.” |
The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative (GMI), has strongly criticized Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who has styled himself as the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over his recent remarks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate. Abdullahi had claimed that President Tinubu’s tenure would end in 2027 and that Nigerians would not wish to see it extended. In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, the GMI described the comments as misleading, presumptuous, and out of touch with the realities on the ground. Musa said: “We are compelled to challenge Abdullahi’s assertions, which not only misrepresent the realities of governance under President Tinubu but also reflect a disconcerting disconnect from the sentiments of the Nigerian populace. “Firstly, Abdullahi's claim that Nigerians would not wish to extend President Tinubu's tenure by even a single day is both presumptuous and misleading. The reality on the ground is far more nuanced than he suggests. “While it is true that our nation faces significant challenges, including banditry, insecurity, and economic hardship, it is equally true that the current administration is actively addressing these issues. “President Tinubu’s government has demonstrated a commitment to not only combatting the scourge of insecurity but also implementing economic reforms that are beginning to yield positive results. “Abdullahi’s assertion that the government should prepare to vacate office in 2027, should it fail to effectively manage these challenges, is a stark oversimplification. It disregards the complexities of governance and the ongoing efforts being made to stabilize and uplift our nation." He noted that the Tinubu government has taken decisive steps to strengthen national security and dismantle criminal networks, while also introducing economic reforms aimed at stimulating growth, creating jobs, and easing hardship. The group maintained that Abdullahi’s remarks oversimplify governance and ignore the “palpable shift towards recovery” being witnessed across the country. The GMI believes that this progress should be acknowledged and celebrated rather than dismissed in a bid to score political points. Abdullahi’s failure to recognize these advancements suggests a troubling detachment from the realities faced by the average Nigerian. He added, “Abdullahi’s comments regarding punitive taxes and the economic hardships faced by Nigerians fail to recognize the broader context of the global economic landscape. “The challenges that Nigeria faces today are not solely a product of this administration; they are compounded by years of systemic issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic downturns. “The Tinubu administration is working diligently to implement economic reforms that will ultimately lead to a more prosperous Nigeria. These reforms are not instantaneous; they require time, patience, and collective effort from all stakeholders, including the opposition parties. “Moreover, we must address the legitimacy of Abdullahi's position within the ADC. His self-appointed role as the spokesperson for a party that has struggled to establish a coherent identity raises questions about his authority to speak on behalf of its members. “The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative asserts that Abdullahi’s comments are not representative of the views or sentiments of the broader ADC base. Instead, they reflect his personal ambitions and an opportunistic approach to politics that disregards the collective will of the people. “It is essential for political leaders and representatives to engage with the realities of governance and the lived experiences of citizens. Abdullahi’s rhetoric, which seeks to undermine the current administration, does a disservice to the democratic process. “It is crucial for opposition voices to contribute constructively to the national discourse, offering solutions rather than merely critiques. In this context, the GMI urges Abdullahi and the ADC to adopt a more responsible and realistic approach to their political engagements. “The Grassroots Mobilization Initiative stands firmly behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration’s efforts to navigate the myriad challenges facing our nation. “We believe that the President’s mandate should be respected and that any discussions regarding tenure extensions should be grounded in the realities of governance and the aspirations of the Nigerian people.” Reaffirming its support for the Renewed Hope Agenda, the GMI urged Abdullahi and other opposition figures to engage responsibly in national discourse, while pledging to continue advocating for policies that benefit Nigerians. “The GMI remains committed to advocating for the interests of Nigerians and fostering a political environment that prioritizes constructive dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.” |
The Achadu Oko-Ata and Prime Minister of the Igala Kingdom, His Royal Highness Ali Yusuf Ameadaji, has declared football a powerful tool for fostering unity in Nigeria and endorsed the AfriSportPro Youth League. His endorsement marks a significant milestone for the league, an initiative designed to unite Nigerians through sports while nurturing the next generation of football talent. The monarch disclosed this while receiving the league’s CEO and Chairman, Mr. Chukwuebuka Ugwu, who paid him a courtesy visit to seek royal blessings and partnership. Ameadaji, who revealed his passion for football, praised the initiative and commended Ugwu for promoting unity through the sport. He also pledged his full support for the AfriSportPro Youth League, charging Ugwu to remain sincere, upright, and a worthy ambassador of the Igala people. Ameadaji said: “I am a football lover myself. In fact, I once aspired to play professionally, and football gave me the chance to travel across many states in Nigeria.” He commended the league’s emphasis on unity, adding: “I must commend you for preaching unity through football. Ethnic tensions are especially high today, particularly on social media, but we must ignore divisive voices and build unity on the ground. Your league is a good step in that direction.” Ugwu, from Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu State, described the AfriSportPro Youth League as a national platform designed to empower young footballers and promote unity across Nigeria. In a statement, Ugwu stressed the importance of visiting the Achadu Oko – Ata Igala as a demonstration of inclusivity. He said: “A national youth football league designed to provide opportunities for talented young Nigerian footballers, while also serving as a platform to promote national unity. At a time when Nigeria remains deeply polarized along ethnic and religious lines, football continues to stand out as one of the strongest forces of unity. “We see this league not only as an avenue to empower the youth but also as a mission to bring our country together. Although Kogi State is not yet represented in the league, it did not stop me from coming here to seek your blessings. “This gesture is a demonstration of unity, showing that states not yet included in the league still matter and must be part of the vision. My own state, Enugu, is also not currently in the league, and this is our way of underscoring that the project is not about sentiment but about national cohesion. “I came to seek the blessings of His Royal Highness, to humbly request him to serve as the Royal Patron of the AfriSportPro Youth League, and to secure the goodwill and support of one of Nigeria’s strongest tribes, the Igala Kingdom.” |
