Health / 33m Nigerians Defecate 1.7 M Tonnes Of Feaces In Open Spaces Annually - Unicef by orbaxy(m): 2:20pm On Jun 29, 2011
Abuja – The UNICEF says an estimated 33 million Nigerians still practice open defecation in different parts of the country.

Dr Suomi Sakai, UNICEF’s Country Representative and Chief Ambassador, said this at the commemoration of the World Sanitation Day on Tuesday in Abuja.

“The most worrisome of all the unsanitary practices is the high rate of open defecation practice in the country.

“It is estimated that about 33 million Nigerians defecate in the open, depositing about 1.7m tonnes of faeces cry into the environment annually,’’ she said.

Sakai said that the development had resulted in a high level of contamination of the environment in which garbage and faeces often find their way into water resources.

She stressed the need for awareness creation among the populace and the imperative of imbibing sanitary practices for improved health and socio-economic well-being of the citizenry.

The Chief Ambassador, however, commended the Federal Ministry of Environment for providing a viable platform for discussing and analysing environmental sanitation issues for sustainable development.

According to her, the occasion provides an opportunity for the review of commitment and support to improve the status of environmental sanitation in the country.

She said that the theme of the celebration which is “Cleanliness: Gateway to Healthy Living,’’ was timely and appropriate, considering the present poor environmental sanitation practices and its consequences on the life of the people.

She maintained that high morbidity and mortality rates in the country, prompted by cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery and typhoid, all sanitation-related diseases, were consequences of poor sanitation and hygiene practice.

“Children under five are the most vulnerable to the effects of poor sanitation and hygiene in the country.

“ It is estimated that that nearly 200,000 children under five years die annually due to diarrhoea while respiratory infections kill another 240,000 young children every year,’’ she added.

Sakai explained that improving the disposal of human excreta and stopping open defecation could reduce illnesses by 34 per cent, stressing that when combined with hand washing, the impact could be doubled.

The Country Representative recalled that the UN General Assembly had passed a resolution urging member countries to redouble efforts to close the sanitation gap.

She said that the resolution tagged, “Sustainable Sanitation: The Five-Year-Drive to 2015’’, would focus on mobilising political will as well as financial and technical resources for achieving the MDG sanitation target.

She said the resolution had also called for an end to open defecation.

Sakai called on the Federal Government to invest in the sanitation sector to improve the economic development of the country. (NAN)

c'mon guys allow her to indulge. its no crime. haba!

Although there's nothing like catholic Igbo marriage, traditional igbo marriage is fun. It differs depending on the locality and how religious or "traditional" the brides family is. Some go way too traditional with lots of rituals, masqurade dances, traditional rites and stuffs like that. Basically, the highlight is the "passing of the "ngwo" " That is, the bride carries a keg of palm wine "the best alcoholic booze nature can provide  grin" to the groom, kneels down and hand him the keg. The groom drinks the palmwine and dances with the bride. lots of things follow which am not disposed to write here.  Anyway, some keep it simple others indulge till the latter.

Hope i've fed your curiosity. Know back to your books!  angry  kiss

To be candid with you, they'll prefer a person with a degree. English teachers are hot cake here, though i don't know your specialty.
I know the Govt of UAE is recruiting teachers massively but i don't know through what means. If you're a teacher, you stand a great chance. i wouldnt want to post my email here so i don't know how we can get in touch smiley but keep the hussle on, God will make a way for you.

there are numerous jobsites in dubai. you can visit gulfnews.com and click on their job page. 3000aed is about 120k that will hardly pay your bills. keep searching, there are many jobsites, polish your CV, try to link directly with companies, market yourself, you just might be lucky. Please don't fall into the hands of labour contractors, thats modern day slavery. If you get it yourself, you're made.

@OP,

It's Scam. If you need a job here in UAE, you can start applying for them right from your home country. If your CV is good, you won't spend a dime to get a good job here. Believe me, if you can't get it from your home country, your chances of getting it while you're here is slim unless you're ready to settle for anything and join the teaming population of nuisance from Nigeria loitering Deira area of Dubai. You need to see the pathetic sight.
Anyway, if you're the sort of person that like adventure, get a 2 weeks visa, come here and circulate your CV, you just might be lucky. DON''T GIVE NO BAGGER ANY DIME, I KNOW A MILLION VICTIM. (mind you, if you're a fresher from school with no experience, sorry to bust your bubble, forget it smiley )

Pukkah:

The current state of the Nigeria Police is an exception to any superficial treatment, only a surgical operation can address the problem. The corruption is so bad that the organization has become a victim of its own graft.

Associate the Nigeria Police with any organization and it will infect that organization, pronto! Which other organization in Nigeria is more corrupt than the Nigeria Police? I think the past IGPs (and even Presidents) got intimidated by the sheer extent of the problems that they simply gave up hope of redeeming the Police. They simply asked themselves, 'where should I start from'?

It is this same attitude that the current IGP (and President) have put up, they simply want to wait out the problems and hope that the fundamental issues will just disappear on their own.

ABUJA—THE Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim’s job may be on the line as President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, officially asked him to explain what he called ‘intelligence failure’ that made it possible for the Force Headquarters, in Abuja to be bombed.

The police boss was also asked to explain the discrepancies in his account of the events of that day and the footage the President watched.

For example Ringim was said to have told his boss that the bomber drove in to the police car park with his convoy while the footage showed a clear 15 minutes interval between the IG’s arrival and that of the bomber.  WTF?

Another fundamental issue raised in the President’s query is whether the account was indeed suicide bombing as the public was made to believe.  angry

Impeccable Presidency sources said that President Jonathan may be considering a replacement for Ringim following his inability to checkmate activities of the Islamic fundamentalists known as Boko Haram and the spate of bombings in Abuja and other northern states.  grin kiss[s] (maybe, gbomo jomo of MEND or watever)[/s]
The Force Headquarters explosion was the fourth in the nation’s capital since October 1, 2010 which left in its wake several casualties. Setting the ground for the presidential displeasure was the summoning of the police boss to Aso Rock presidential villa on Tuesday. This made it impossible for Ringim to attend a security meeting scheduled with police commissioners and deputy inspectors general of police as well as a press conference to brief the nation about the bombing of the Force Headquarters.

Meeting held yesterday

Meantime, the security meeting with police commissioners and DIGs eventually held, yesterday, with a resolve to fish out those considered to be black legs particularly in the police high command.

The decision was taken with the suggestion that the Boko Haram might have penetrated the force.  cry (doesnt make sense)

Also at yesterday’s meeting, the IG described Thursday’s bombing of the Force Headquarters as a ‘big wake up call’ to the Nigeria Police Force, stressing: “We shall rise up to the challenge.” (IG unequivocally agreed with Nigerians that the police force was "commaly" asleep)

Addressing DIGs, AIGs and commissioners of police who had been in Abuja since Tuesday  to brainstorm on the current security situation in the country, the IG described the situation that the Police found itself following the blast, as a “very critical period” for the force. STFU its has always been critical!  angry
The IG’s disclosure came just as Vanguard gathered that the investigating Police team looking into the bomb blast, was told by some of the 58 suspects currently in detention, that some of Boko Haram members had infiltrated the FCT in preparation for more attacks.  cry cry

Vanguard learnt that the police have begun to comb suspected hideouts to arrest the sect’s members and that over 30 suspected Boko Haram infiltrators had been nabbed from various black spots mentioned to the police during interrogation of the 58 suspects. crap

Justice for killing of Boko Haram leader

Also yesterday, Police sources told Vanguard that the Boko Haram sect members had reduced their demands to two, noting: “The Boko Haram sect has now said they want justice done for the killing of their leader (Yusuf Mohammed) and other leaders of the group in 2009, while in Police custody in Maiduguri; and payment of compensation for their property that was destroyed by security operatives of all the security agencies.” (now is the time to negotiate with terrorists, such a trying time) cool
The source said: “The Federal Government knows what to do if they really want the menace of Boko Haram checkmated. It is a question of directing the Borno State government to enter into dialogue with them and reach consensus on their two demands. (do you really mean this? ) shocked shocked shocked

They have two groups of Boko Haram now, the militant group and the group that is ready for dialogue. The group that is ready for dialogue has a lot of influence on the militant group because it is believed they provide the funding. So they will call the militant group to order if dialogue commences and agreement is reached.” (synonymous to Henry Okah's MEND and GEJ's MEND) WTF!

On the meeting proper, the Inspector General of Police said: “I want to use  this opportunity to condole with the country and the Nigeria Police Force over the loss of our gallant officers in last week’s bomb blast in the Police headquarters premises. Particularly, I want to condole the family of late ASP Nangor Damptin who paid the supreme sacrifice in order to save us all. (F***k off!)

First hand look at damage caused

“We invited you all here, to share with you, the experience of the last bomb blast as well as afford you the opportunity to have a first hand look at the damage caused. We invited you because of your years of experience in law enforcement. We sincerely believe you have a lot of contribution to make to our efforts at checkmating any future occurrence.

We need to rise to the challenge of this attack and say never again. What is happening is a big wake up call. I and the management team have seen the recommendations of your brainstorming and we are going to give it the seriousness it deserves with a view to making the Nigeria police force rise to the challenge.” (did he say we?)

Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that more Police officers including three chief superintendents of police, CSP; four deputy superintendents of police, DSP; and six other officers said to be linked with the killing in 2009 of the leader and other members of the Boko Haram sect, amongst them, a MOPOL Squadron Commander in Maiduguri at the time have been arrested and are currently in detention. (same thing scooby doo will do)

A source told Vanguard that it was not true that the investigation into the killing of the sect leaders was swept under the carpet as investigation which sometimes takes months and years to conclude, has been on. He pointed out that with investigation now concluded, the officers will be prosecuted to show to the world that the police have nothing to hide.

Police retract ‘suicide bomb’ claim  (ofcourse we've always known it wasnt)

There was drama, yesterday, over the statement by the police authorities recanting the earlier claim that last Thursday’s bomb blasts was carried out by a suicide bomber.

A statement to that effect had been prepared by the staff of the Inspector-General’s Office to be read to the press after Alhaji Hafiz Ringim’s meeting with the top brass of the force but was rejected by the police boss whom, the Boko Haram claimed was the prime target of the attack.

The statement which was neither on Police letterhead nor signed was subsequently withdrawn.
Mr. Olusola Amore, the Public Relations Officer of the Force, disowning the earlier statement, said investigations were continuing as to the actual cause of the blast.

Amore said: “Investigation into the bomb blast is on course and when there is development members of the media will be updated about the it but you should be patient and not allow your report to jeopardize it.”

@dyvinson,

I see.

Am just fed up with scammers who offer to help people only to satisfy their ulterior motives.
Anyway, i see it is an obscure college that always get unnoticed. Not really a university (in the contest of broad spectrum curriculum) only an avenue for people to migrate, graduate and wonder what next.

No hard feelings bro. I only raised alarm "because it was not listed as a UNIVERSITY"!

Good enough you know its a post-secondary institution meant only to kick start the alborigins, not for somebody intending to work in a multinational like most Nigerians do
Goodluck with it. If i called you names, am sorry!

cheers.
