Seizing the Golden Feather: Profiting from Naira Devaluation in Poultry Farming

In recent times, the landscape of the poultry business in Nigeria has undergone a remarkable transformation, presenting a golden opportunity for farmers to reap substantial profits. The key catalyst behind this shift is the devaluation of the Naira, rendering the importation of poultry products less lucrative and, in turn, propelling the local industry to new heights.

The Devaluation Effect

The devaluation of the Naira has significantly impacted the economics of poultry farming in Nigeria. Importing poultry products from neighboring countries, notably Benin Republic, has become less attractive due to the unfavorable exchange rates. This has created a paradigm shift, making local production a more viable and profitable option for farmers.

Economic Dynamics: Landing Cost vs. Local Production

The landing cost of chicken meat per kilogram has surged to 3300 Naira, a figure that reflects the increased expenses associated with importing poultry products. In contrast, local production costs hover around 2600 to 2800 Naira per kilogram. This substantial difference presents a clear financial advantage for local farmers, making poultry farming a lucrative venture.

Correcting Egg Drop Due to Vaccination Stress:

Egg boosting formulation to correct egg drop due to vaccination in laying chicken

When egg production drops due to vaccination in laying chickens, it is essential to provide them with a supplementary feed that supports their health and helps them recover from the effects of the vaccination. Here's a sample "egg-boosting" formulation to aid in correcting the egg drop:

Ingredients (per 100 kg of feed):

Soybean Meal: 40 kg
Corn: 40 kg
Wheat Bran: 10 kg
Fish Meal: 5 kg
Sunflower Meal: 3 kg
Oyster Shell or Limestone: 1 kg (for calcium supplementation)
Vitamin and Mineral Premix: 1 kg (to provide essential vitamins and minerals)
Brewer's Yeast: 0.5 kg (to support gut health and digestion)
Dried Seaweed (Kelp): 0.5 kg (a natural source of trace minerals)
Instructions:

Mix all the dry ingredients thoroughly to ensure a homogenous mixture.
If you are using a premix containing vitamins and minerals, add it to the mixture and mix well.
Feed supplement as a complementary feed to the laying chickens for a period of around 2-3 weeks after vaccination.

Ensure that the chickens have access to clean water at all times. Observe the chickens closely during this period, monitoring their egg production, health, and overall well-being.

If you notice any abnormal symptoms or prolonged drop in egg production, seek advice from a poultry veterinarian to rule out any other health issues.

Remember that vaccination can sometimes cause temporary stress in chickens, leading to a brief decline in egg production. With proper nutrition and care, most chickens should recover and resume normal egg production within a few weeks. The egg-boosting formulation aims to provide essential nutrients that support their recovery and overall health during this period.

Agriculture / Re: Lettuce Farming Using Vertical Sack Farming. by organicfoods(m): 9:16am On Jun 25, 2023
Preparing the vertical sacks is a crucial step in successful lettuce farming. Farmers fill the sacks with a well-balanced mixture of nutrient-rich soil and properly aged manure, maintaining a ratio of 1:1.

To promote water circulation and aeration, a pipe filled with stones is inserted while piling the soil and manure mix. This method optimizes space and resources while ensuring the lettuce plants have a favorable growing environment.

Transplanting lettuce in vertical sacks requires careful handling to preserve the roots and avoid damaging the plants. Farmers should maintain appropriate soil moisture levels during the transplanting process.

A surgical approach is recommended to gently transfer the lettuce plants to their new home, preserving the root structure and ensuring successful transplantation. This meticulous approach promotes healthy growth and maximizes crop yields.

In a vertical sack farming update, it is noted that the lettuce plants thrive in the sacks, benefiting from the optimal growing environment provided by the sacks. However, as the plants grow, there is a risk of pest infestation, such as white flies, which can cause significant damage.

To address this, organic pest control methods such as neem oil and black soap are implemented. These solutions effectively keep the white flies at bay, protecting the plants from harm. By utilizing organic pest control methods, farmers minimize the use of harmful chemicals, promoting sustainable farming practices.

By embracing vertical sack farming, farmers can enjoy higher crop yields, reduced labor costs, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. This innovative farming method allows for efficient water and nutrient management while conserving resources and optimizing space.

Stay tuned for more information on vertical sack farming and its benefits for farmers in terms of crop yield optimization and environmental sustainability. Additionally, you can learn about DIY organic pest control methods to further enhance your farming practices.

Agriculture / Lettuce Farming Using Vertical Sack Farming. by organicfoods(m): 8:53am On Jun 25, 2023
Vertical sack farming is an innovative method that allows farmers to grow lettuce efficiently while conserving resources and reducing labor. This method is particularly beneficial for farmers seeking to maximize crop yields and minimize their environmental impact.

Lettuce is a suitable crop for vertical sack farming because it requires regular watering. The process begins by planting the lettuce in a nursery and later transplanting it into holes made around the sack. This farming technique not only saves water but also eliminates the need for extensive weeding, which is commonly required in traditional farming methods.

Watering lettuce in vertical sack farming is optimized for efficient water circulation. It is recommended to add stones in the center of the sack, extending all the way to the bottom, while filling it with a mixture of soil and manure.

The stones promote quick water circulation and aeration within the bag. Additionally, supplying liquid nutrients to the lettuce is simple with the sack. This approach enables efficient nutrient application, leading to healthier and more productive lettuce plants.[/quote] lettuce plants.

Gardeners: Cultivating Beauty and Nurturing Passion

Gardeners, on the other hand, have a more personal and intimate approach to horticulture. They work on smaller scales, often tending to their own private gardens or small community plots. Their main goal is not necessarily food production but rather creating beautiful and functional spaces filled with plants and flowers.

Gardeners take great pride in their craft and find joy in nurturing plants, experimenting with various species, and creating aesthetically pleasing landscapes. They focus on aesthetics, plant diversity, and sustainable gardening practices. While some gardeners may grow edible crops for personal consumption, their primary motivation is to create a sanctuary of beauty and tranquility.

Diverse Approaches and Mindsets

Farmers and gardeners differ not only in scale but also in their approaches and mindsets toward agriculture:

Commercial vs. Personal:

Farmers approach agriculture as a business, aiming for profitability and large-scale production. Gardeners, on the other hand, pursue their passion for horticulture, finding personal satisfaction in the act of gardening.

Food Security vs. Personal Enjoyment:

Farmers prioritize food security and feeding the population, focusing on high-yield crops and efficient production methods. Gardeners prioritize aesthetics, personal enjoyment, and creating spaces that bring joy and solace.

Specialization vs. Experimentation:
Farmers often specialize in specific crops or livestock to optimize their operations and meet market demands. Gardeners, however, have the freedom to experiment with a wide variety of plants, exploring unique species and creative gardening techniques.

Community Impact vs. Personal Connection:
Farmers contribute to the larger community by providing essential food resources. Gardeners, on the other hand, build personal connections with nature and find solace in their gardens, often sharing their knowledge and experiences with others.

Farmers and gardeners may differ in their scale, purpose, and approach, but both play vital roles in the world of agriculture. Farmers feed nations and feed nations and ensure food security, while gardeners cultivate beauty and nurture personal connections with nature.

Whether it's the vast fields of a farmer's crop or the charming oasis of a gardener's backyard, both contribute to the diversity, sustenance, and beauty of our natural world. Let us appreciate and celebrate the unique contributions of farmers and gardeners alike, for they are the stewards of our agricultural heritage.

Organic fertilizers

Organic fertilizers are essential for the growth and development of crops, including sweet corn. They provide essential nutrients to the soil, improve soil fertility and structure, and promote healthy growth and development of plants. In Nigeria, there are various organic materials that can be used to make organic fertilizers for sweet corn farming. Here are three organic fertilizers that can be produced for a sweet corn farm using locally available ingredients:

Compost fertilizer:
Compost fertilizer is one of the most popular organic fertilizers used in sweet corn farming. It is made from decomposed organic materials such as animal manure, crop residues, and kitchen waste. To produce compost fertilizer, the following materials can be used:

Animal manure:

Cow, goat, or poultry manure can be used. These are readily available in Nigeria and can be collected from farms or livestock markets.

Crop residues:
Crop residues such as maize stalks, rice straw, and cassava peels can be collected from farms.

Kitchen waste:
Kitchen waste such as vegetable and fruit peels, eggshells, and tea leaves can be collected from households.
To make compost fertilizer, mix the animal manure and crop residues in a heap or compost bin. Add the kitchen waste, and water the heap to keep it moist. Turn the heap every few weeks to ensure that it decomposes evenly. After a few months, the compost will be ready for use as fertilizer.

Fish Emulsion Fertilizer:
Fish emulsion fertilizer is a liquid fertilizer made from fish waste. It is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for the growth and development of sweet corn plants. To produce fish emulsion fertilizer, the following materials can be used:

Fish waste:
Fish heads, guts, and bones can be used. These are readily available in Nigeria, especially in coastal areas.

Water:
Clean water is needed to make the fertilizer.
To make fish emulsion fertilizer, chop the fish waste into small pieces and put them in a container. Add water to cover the fish waste and let it sit for several days. Stir the mixture occasionally. After a few days, the mixture will start to smell bad. This is an indication that the fermentation process is complete. Strain the liquid through a cheesecloth or a fine sieve. Dilute the liquid with water and use it as fertilizer.

Bone Meal Fertilizer:
Bone meal fertilizer is a dry fertilizer made from crushed animal bones. It is rich in phosphorus, which is essential for root development and seedling growth. To produce bone meal fertilizer, the following materials can be used:

Animal bones:
Cow, goat, or poultry bones can be used. These are readily available in Nigeria and can be collected from abattoirs or meat processing plants.
Mortar and pestle or a mechanical grinder: This is needed to grind the bones into a fine powder.
To make bone meal fertilizer, clean the bones and remove any remaining flesh. Crush the bones into small pieces using a mortar and pestle or a mechanical grinder. Grind the crushed bones into a fine powder. The powder can be used as a dry fertilizer for sweet corn plants.
