grin If i follow your analogy then every eastern adult was given 20pounds because everybody will claim to have money in the bank.
History revisionist in this Internet age
You read the article didn't you?
The 20 Pounds was given to them ex-gratia.Extrapolate whatever meaning you want from that and you'll get your answer.

How many Biafrans kept their Nigerian bank documents till the end of the civil war?
And do you expect Awolowo as the Finance Minister to allow the swapping of Biafran Pounds(a currency not recognised globally) for their Nigerian equivalents?

Interestingly, while you'll vilify Awolowo over the 20 Pounds saga you and your likes will never acknowledge Awolowo's efforts towards the recovery of the Eastern Region that even SG Ikoku the Commissioner for Economic Development in the East Central State attested to.Why?Selective amnesia?

Though, historical facts showed that he was not the one who set up the panel or had anything to do with it other than just executing the panel's recommendations,
Now this statement alone countered all bull crap he wrote up there.
Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then Finance Minister of engineering, executed the panels recommendation of 20 pounds policy.
Was Achebe not saying the same thing?
Just negodu this man's angle of reasoning.
what the author of the article is saying is that 20 Pounds were given to those who could not provide evidence of having money in Nigerian banks.

But the widely held belief is that every Igbo received 20 Pounds regardless of their savings.

"The bottom line here is that the issue of this 20 pound gift has become an instrument of blackmail in the hands of Biafran leaders like Achebe who would try to avoid responsibility for the harm they caused their own people. They had to look for someone to blame and Obafemi Awolowo came handy for this. How can any Igbo blame others for losing his Bank Statement? If they could not substantiate their claims in regard to their balances, how did they expect to be paid? Or did they think the rest of Nigerians were fools who would rush to pay any spurious claims they make? Granted that the war could have caused the loss of some documents, why would this be the fault of Awolowo? Is this not a sign of irresponsibility on the part of Achebe and other leaders of Biafra?"

The excerpt above sums it up.

PoliticsRe: Draft Of The Oodua Region Yoruba Constitution by Origamist: 7:07pm On Jul 04, 2017
shukuokukobambi:
You're right that its a thorny issue and one we'll have to address in the fullness of time.
The sultan is the spiritual head of all Muslims in Nigeria(Don't know when the authority was granted) so they all are obligated to hear him. The aare musulumi of Yoruba land is a ceremonial title with no real power and was further degraded due to Arisekola's romance with Abacha. I doubt that all Yoruba Muslims even feel beholden to the title holder. Islam isn't like Christianity where a parish pastor can get tired of the overbearing influence of his G.O, start his own ministry citing the call of God. All Muslims are bound to Saudi Arabia and whoever the Saudi crown recognises.
While Christians can separate their christian life from secular life(this hypocrisy, IMHO, made me become lethargic to Christianity) , for the pious Muslim, Islam is his entire way of life and it dictates the secular, political, education etc.
My answer to the issues with both religions made me become irreligious. I'd rather start practicing isese than continue to support the continued despoiling of our culture snd identity by these 2 invasive religions from the middle East.
Apologies to all omoluabis who feel offended or slighted by my post.
Thanks.

Errm... I know this is a thorny topic, but am curious.

What exactly is the function of the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland?
Why isn't he the one to declare when fasting begins to the Muslims among us?

No malice intended.
PoliticsRe: Draft Of The Oodua Region Yoruba Constitution by Origamist: 7:37am On Jul 03, 2017
There's a need to create nationalistic feelings in the hearts of Yorubas both young & old.
A situation where most Yorubas only think Nigeria is unacceptable and a stumbling block.
Charity begins at home: The development of Yoruba enclave should be our primary concern.
Waiting for Nigeria as a whole to be great is waste of time as the country is a welter of different people with divergent mores, beliefs and aspirations.
The focus should be on Yorubaland.
This is the mindset we should have in Nigeria today.
**
In a Yoruba country, children must be taught the language.
The belief that kids must speak only English is borne out of inferiority complex and must not be condoled.
I firmly believe once the fire of patriotism burns in our people - every other thing shall fall in place.

PoliticsRe: Igbo Soldiers Plotted Coup From Independence Day -david Ejoor by Origamist: 3:08am On Jun 28, 2017
pazienza:
Any evidence to prove that the coup is Igbo coup? Had any of the coup plotters said that the coup was an Igbo coup? Any links?
Concluding that Nzeogwu, a Northern raised Igbo being the leader of the coup that had other non Igbo participants , is an Igbo coup, is a bit far fretched, don't you think so?
No one ever said Ironsi was part of the Awolowo coup, Ironsi was a party pooper that derailed the second stage of the coup that would have seen Awolowo release and enthronement.
No. Awolowo was for real found guilty of treasonable felony, and financial misappropriation. it wasn't just put together like Yorubas want the world to believe. Awolowo wasn't tried by a military court.
Akintola indeed had the backing of Balewa and Saraduna, which even made their(Saraduna and Balewa) elimination paramount, if Awolowo must gain back the West.
His previous antecedent of trying to usurp Balewa, the Jan coup masterminding, makes the story very plausible.
Don't get me wrong.I don't think it was an an Igbo coup. That label's a result of the inability of some of the coupists to dispatch the Eastern leaders like they did to those of the North and the West.

Here again is one of the reasons why your claim does not add up.
There's no way Aguiyi Ironsi could have survived a coup meant to free Awolowo from prison since he was not in cahoots with the plotters.
That would have been a very costly mistake.Nothing would have been smoother than to get rid of him for Ogundipe(a Yoruba like Awolowo) to take over. But he survived, and he was Igbo like the leaders who were spare.
One starts to wonder how Awolowo will plan a coup and leave such key figures from the East out of his hitlist.

The treason and corruption charges were meant to discredit Awolowo. While I don't think he was infallible, the circumstances that led it shows it was all an attempt to weaken his influence in the West.
After the skirmsh in the Western HouseAdegbenro's request for police presence fell on deaf ears,a state of emergency was declared.Zik signed the Emergency Regulation Act.Majekodunmi was appointed as the Administrator.A restriction order was placed on Awolowo and some others. The Coker Commission was set up to investigate him. Can't you see how these events are closely knitted together?
Is this fair to you?
They used the crack in the AG to push forward all those allegations.

You said they wanted to make him President.A gang of coupists with such an aim will make no bones about wiping out the Eastern leaders too.
The Leaders of the North and West shouldn't have been the only ones marked, going by your claim.

There's no antecedent.
What you have is a weak excuse for why he was jailed.
PoliticsRe: Igbo Soldiers Plotted Coup From Independence Day -david Ejoor by Origamist: 11:41pm On Jun 27, 2017
pazienza:
1. The coup plotters clearly stated that enthroning Awolowo was their plan.
So from the word go, this had Awolowo finger prints written over it, if we factor in the role Fajuyi, a Yoruba man played in grooming Nzeogwu and co for the coup.
Awolowo also had antecedents of trying to Usurp Balewa government, the charges were not trumped up, he was found guilty of financial embezzlement and treasonable felony, this is the fact, hindsight also confirmed this, when he again tried to usurp another government(IBB) , leading to his death.
Jakande case makes sense cause it supports a truth we already knew.
3. I don't think so. Awolowo was a corrupt politician, everyone knew this, there was a reason he was in jail. So no, it's too much of a co incidence that he was being touted as one to lead a new corrupt free country.
5. Zik always outsmarted Awo. Zik was no direct adversary to Awo, not after Awo had managed to chase him out of the West. Awolowo main concern as of then was to reclaim his position as the numero uno in the West. Eliminating Akintola as well as the source of his power, ie Saraduna and Balewa, one reasoned would have been priority number one for him.
And all those men dying in that coup, was too much of a co incidence.
So yes, I still strongly believe with a good reason, that the coup was masterminded by Awolowo, using Nzeogwu and co as pawn in his deadly political game.
Do you have any evidence that directly links him to the coup?
A statement by any of the coup plotters or something of that nature.
Concluding that because Fajuyi was a Yoruba(fajuyi's involvement is still debatable)and was at the Battle Course with Nzeogwu et al. Makes Awolowo the reason for the coup is a farfetched.
He was not released by Ironsi after the putsch. How do you stage a coup for some1 and not release him afterwards?

The treasonable felony charge was put together by Balewa and Akintola to ensure that he was imprisoned since his arrest came on the heels of the fracas in the Western House between Akintola and Dauda Adegbenro.

Balewa sided with Akintola and ensured that he was reinstated even when the Awolowo & the majority wanted him to leave his seat.

How does it makes sense?
You mean he'll record himself planning a coup with Jakande and the rest?

Well Zik was a rival, directly or indirectly. So why would he have spared Zik?
And for someone like Awolowo who you all often call a tribalist for his commitment to the Yoruba nation,I don't think he'll allow any Igbo take part in a coup he intend to stage, whether as pawns or not.
It's unlike him.
