Qassem Soleimani, widely believed to be the second most powerful man in Iran, was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq.


The commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday doubled down on a threat to avenge the US killing of Iran's top general Qassem Soleimani in early January.

"Our revenge for the martyrdom of our great general is certain. It is serious. It is real," Major-General Hossein Salami said in a speech, directly addressing US President Donald Trump.

"We will hit those who were directly or indirectly involved in the martyrdom of this great man."

Soleimani, widely believed to be the second most powerful man in Iran, was assassinated in a US drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq. He was accompanied by a senior Iraqi commander and several other IRGC members who were killed.


After the attack, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised "harsh revenge" for the perpetrators, a promise that Iranian officials have reiterated since.

Days later, Iran retaliated by firing more than a dozen rockets at two military bases in Iraq hosting American troops.

As Salami pointed out during his Saturday remarks, no US soldiers were killed during the attack.

However, as disclosed by US military, more than 100 soldiers were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries stemming from the missile attack, something Trump dismissed as "headaches".

"But rest assured, anyone who was involved in this will be hit," Salami said in his speech.

'1,000 times harder'[i][/i]
Salami's remarks come after US media outlet Politico published a story that claimed, citing unnamed sources, Iran is weighing a plot to assassinate US Ambassador to South Africa Lana Marks to avenge Soleimani.

Trump warned this week that Washington would harshly respond to any Iranian attempts to take revenge for the death of the general, tweeting "if they hit us in any way ... we're going to hit them 1,000 times harder".

BEIJING — China’s Defense Ministry on Sunday blasted a critical U.S. report on the country’s military ambitions, saying it is the U.S. instead that poses the biggest threat to the international order and world peace.

The statement follows the Sept. 2 release of the annual Defense Department report to Congress on Chinese military developments and goals that it said would have “serious implications for U.S. national interests and the security of the international rules-based order.”
Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Wu Qian called the report a “wanton distortion” of China’s aims and the relationship between the People’s Liberation Army and China’s 1.4 billion people.

“Many years of evidence shows that it is the U.S. that is the fomenter of regional unrest, the violator of the international order and the destroyer of world peace,” he said.
U.S. actions in Iraq, Syria, Libya and other countries over the past two decades have resulted in the deaths of more than 800,000 people and displacement of millions, Qian said.

“Rather than reflecting on itself, the U.S. issued a so-called report that made false comments about China’s normal defense and military construction,” he said in the statement. “We call on the U.S. to view China’s national defense and military construction objectively and rationally, cease making false statements and related reports, and take concrete actions to safeguard the healthy development of bilateral military relations.”

Running to more than 150 pages, the Defense Department report examined the PLA’s technical capabilities, doctrines and the ultimate aims of China’s military buildup. It said it includes becoming a “practical instrument” of China’s statecraft with an active role in advancing Beijing’s foreign policy and “aims to revise aspects of the international order.”

“Certainly, many factors will determine how this course unfolds,” the report said. “What is certain is that (the ruling Communist Party) has a strategic end state that it is working towards, which, if achieved and its accompanying military modernization left unaddressed, will have serious implications for U.S. national interests and the security of the international rules-based order.”

Much of the report was devoted to analyzing China’s strategy toward Taiwan, a U.S. ally which China considers a part of its territory to be annexed by force if necessary. China’s military capabilities dwarf those of the island of 23 million in numerical terms, although any invasion of Taiwan would be complex and would carry major political risks, the report said.

It also looked at areas where the 2 million-member PLA, the world’s largest standing military, has overtaken the U.S., including in the size of its navy, now the world’s largest with approximately 350 ships and submarines compared to around 293 for the U.S.

China has also built a considerable arsenal of land-based ballistic and cruise missiles and has one of the world’s largest forces of advanced long-range surface-to-air systems, the report said.

This year’s report comes as relations between Beijing and Washington have hit their lowest ebb in decades amid simmering disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan, human rights and the South China Sea.

An Israeli court handed a Jewish settler three life sentences Monday for murdering a Palestinian toddler and his parents in an arson attack on their home in the occupied West Bank.

Amiram Ben-Uliel, 25, was sentenced by the Lod court following his conviction in May for the 2015 killings. He was also found guilty of two counts each of attempted murder and arson, along with conspiracy to commit a hate crime.

The arson attack killed 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh. His mother, Riham, and father, Saad, later died of their wounds. Ali's four-year-old brother Ahmad survived with burns on his body.

The court said Ben-Uliel's "actions were meticulously planned, and stemmed from the radical ideology he held and racism". It said the punishment was "close to the maximum penalty prescribed by the law".

The 2015 arson attack came amid a wave of vigilante attacks on West Bank Palestinians by suspected Jewish settlers.

Ben-Uliel had sought to avenge the killing of an Israeli a month earlier.

He chose the Dawabsheh family home and another dwelling in Duma village, near Nablus, on the assumption they were inhabited and, before firebombing them, spray-painted "Revenge" and "Long Live King Messiah" on their walls.
The 25-year-old was acquitted of a charge of belonging to a "terrorist" organisation.

He first threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of a house whose inhabitants were not at home.

Ben-Uliel then proceeded to the Dawabsheh house and threw a second petrol bomb through the bedroom window where the couple and their two children were sleeping, before escaping.


'Hilltop youth'

The murders shone a spotlight on Jewish attacks on Palestinians and sparked accusations that Israel had not done enough to prevent such violence.

Critics said lesser attacks on mosques or churches had long gone unpunished, and Palestinians complained of a double standard as the Israeli police investigation dragged on.

Ben-Uliel belonged to a movement known as the "hilltop youth", a leaderless group of young Jewish settlers who set up unauthorised outposts, usually clusters of trailers, on West Bank hilltops - land the Palestinians want for their hoped-for state.

A second, underaged defendant in the case entered a plea deal last year in which murder charges against him were reduced to conspiracy charges. The youth had admitted to staking out Duma ahead of the attack with Ben-Uliel, but was said not to have participated in it.

Ben-Uliel said Israeli investigators had forced him to make a false confession to the attack.

The convicted man's wife, Orian Ben-Uliel, told reporters outside the courtroom following the sentencing "the judges didn't seek justice or truth. They decided to incriminate my husband at any price", and the family would appeal to the country's Supreme Court.
