Foreign Affairs › U.S. Added 1.4 Million Jobs In August And Unemployment Fell To 8.4% by Originality007(op):
After the stock market had its worst day since June 11, falling more than 800 points on Thursday, there were fears of a meager August jobs report. On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported some better-than-expected news. The United States added nearly 1.4 million jobs in August.

Furloughed workers have been brought back—albeit, at a somewhat lower level than we saw in the spring. The 1.4 million jobs was an upward, pleasant surprise to experts, but the numbers are still down from July’s 1.7 million and a strong 4.8 million new jobs added in June. We are still about 11 million jobs less than where we were pre-pandemic. On a positive note, the unemployment rate fell from a high of almost 15% in April to about 8.4% in August. We are still, unfortunately, far from the pre-Covid-19 unemployment rate, which was 3%.

The numbers reflect the lightest amount of hiring since May. The U.S. has almost recouped half of the 22 million jobs lost during the pandemic. Vice President Mike Pence said, “It’s another great day for American jobs and American workers.” He believes the reported numbers are “real evidence that the American comeback is underway.”

A large portion of the new jobs is related to companies bringing back workers, as opposed to hiring new people. There are still concerns that many of the temporary layoffs will turn into permanent job losses. Lydia Boussour, an economist at Oxford Economics, pointed out, “The fact that employment is settling into a trend of slower, grinding growth is worrisome for the broader recovery.” According to Boussour, the data “confirms that the labor market has entered a frustratingly slower second phase of the recovery.”

The hardest-hit sectors showed some life. Retail, restaurants, bars, leisure and hospitality, which were badly impacted had some growth. There were gains in education, health services, financial services, transportation and manufacturing.

The numbers may be a little inflated, as there was a boost in the temporary hiring of 238,000 people for the 2020 census. Reuters reports that there are still challenges ahead, as “United Airlines said on Wednesday it was preparing to furlough 16,370 workers on Oct. 1. American Airlines has announced its workforce would shrink by 40,000, including 19,000 involuntary cuts. Ford Motor said it was targeting 1,400 U.S. salaried jobs for elimination by year’s end. Mass transit rail operators are also eyeing furloughs.”

Tony Bedikian, head of global markets at Citizens Bank, said, “We are still moving in the right direction and the pace of the jobs recovery seems to have picked up, but it still looks like it will take a while—and likely a vaccine—before we get back close to where we were at the beginning of this year.” Bedikian added, “We continue to be optimistic that the economy has turned a corner and that we’ll continue to see steady progress.”

The positive number could unfortunately hurt Americans. Congress couldn’t come up with another round of stimulus for the country due to political disagreements between Republicans and Democrats. They’ve also demured on deciding to reenact the extra $600-per-week unemployment enhancement and return the prohibition on evictions.

This is not hard data, but I’ve noticed a small trend demonstrating an increase in hiring. Using LinkedIn, the largest social media site dedicated to white-collar professionals as a barometer, March though the beginning of August, it was rare to see people on LinkedIn posting that they’ve found a new job. Lately, I’ve noticed an increase in the number of people sharing the good news that they have procured a new job. Although this is anecdotal evidence, the site has over 600 million professionals and offers interesting insights into the direction of the job market
Although the jobs report was relatively positive, we still have a long way to go.

Crime › Nigerian Men Arrested Over German PPE 'scam' by Originality007(op): 3:36pm On Sep 07, 2020
Two Nigerian men have been arrested for allegedly scamming a German state that tried to buy 2.3m euros (£2m) of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nigerian police say they cloned the website of a Dutch company to obtain an order from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

When the PPE didn't show up, a state government representative visited the company's offices in the Netherlands.

The company then informed him that they had never done business with him.

The representative notified the Dutch police and investigations led to Nigeria where the two suspects were arrested in the capital, Abuja. They are due to appear in court soon.

The suspects, Babatunde Adesanya and Akinpelu Hassan Abass, were members of a "sophisticated transnational criminal network", Nigerian police said in a statement.

The pair allegedly cloned the corporate website of ILBN Holdings BV in order to carry out the scam on Freiherr Fredrick Von Hahn, who represented North Rhine-Westphalia. The PPE was needed for the battle against coronavirus.

Two more arrests have also been made in the Netherlands.

According to Nigerian police, Mr Von Hahn was "disturbed" when the PPE did not arrive, only to find out that "the company never did business with him and that the transaction was a scam".

Foreign Affairs › Netanyahu Says Serbia Will Move Its Embassy To Jerusalem by Originality007(op): 12:18pm On Sep 05, 2020
Israeli PM announces move after Serbia and Kosovo agreed on historic pact at White House to normalise economic ties.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Serbia will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, becoming the first European country to follow the United States in making the move.

Most diplomatic missions in Israel have been in Tel Aviv as countries stayed neutral over the disputed city of Jerusalem until its status could be settled in an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

But in December 2017, US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced the shifting the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

On Friday, Netanyahu revealed Serbia's move, adding that the transfer will happen by July 2021.

"I thank my friend the president of Serbia ... for the decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to transfer his embassy there," Netanyahu said.

"I would like also to thank my friend President Trump for contributing to this achievement."

News of the move by Serbia, not a member of the 27-nation EU, coincided with the announcement by Trump that former foes Serbia and Kosovo had agreed on an historic pact to normalise economic relations.

Meanwhile, a senior Palestinian official slammed Serbia's decision, saying it makes "Palestine a victim" of Trump's re-election hopes.

"Palestine has become a victim of the electoral ambitions of President Trump, whose team would take any action, no matter how destructive for peace ... to achieve his re-election," said Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), in a tweet.

Foreign Affairs › Iran's Khamenei Says UAE 'betrayed' Muslim World With Israel Deal by Originality007(op): 8:07pm On Sep 01, 2020
Supreme leader says UAE allowed 'Zionist regime to enter region and forgot Palestine' by normalising Israel ties.

The United Arab Emirates betrayed the Islamic world and the Palestinians by reaching a deal towards normalising ties with Israel, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech.

The Palestinians have fiercely opposed the normalisation as weakening traditional Arab refusal to form ties with Israel before the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

That past Arab support was one of the Palestinians' few advantages in moribund peace talks with Israel. Palestinians have held public protests and burned the UAE flag in anger.

"Of course, the UAE's betrayal will not last long, but this stigma will always be remembered. They allowed the Zionist regime to enter the region and forgot Palestine," Khamenei said on Tuesday. "The Emiratis will be disgraced forever... I hope they wake up and compensate for what they did."

Iranian authorities have harshly criticised the United States-brokered deal between the UAE and Tehran's longtime foe Israel, with some officials warning the UAE and Israel fostering closer ties risks conflagration in the Middle East.

An Emirati official dismissed Khamenei's comments.

"The path to peace and prosperity is not through incitement and hate speech," foreign ministry official Jamal al-Musharakh said.

"That kind of rhetoric is counterproductive to peace in the region."

Israel and the UAE expect economic benefits from the deal, the first such accommodation between an Arab country and Israel in more than 20 years, which was forged largely through shared distrust of regional foe, Iran.

Palestinians were dismayed by the UAE's move, worried it would weaken a long-standing pan-Arab position that called for Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and acceptance of Palestinian statehood in return for normal relations with the Arab countries.

Emirati officials have attempted to spin the agreement as being struck in return for Israel suspending its plan to annex large parts of the illegally occupied West Bank, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said annexation was only temporarily off the table.

The UAE's foreign minister recorded a message for the Palestinian diaspora living there on Monday, the day of the first commercial flight between the Israel and the Emirates.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said he wanted to reassure the Palestinian community of his country's commitment to "establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital".

"We will continue to support the Palestinian cause based on our historic stance that stems from a deeply rooted, unshakable belief that will never change as a result of any considerations," Sheikh Abdullah said.

Economic ties
On Saturday, the UAE announced it was scrapping its economic boycott of Israel, with officials from the two countries saying they are looking at cooperation in defence, medicine, agriculture, tourism and technology as part of the deal.

On Monday, the first direct flight by Israel's flagship carrier El Al landed in Abu Dhabi, carrying US and Israeli officials including President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

The UAE is the third Arab nation after Egypt and Jordan to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. Unlike the two other countries, the Gulf state does not share a border with Israel.

In recent years, the UAE has held quiet talks with Israel and allowed Israelis with second passports into the country for trade and talks.

The Trump administration has tried to coax other Arab countries to engage with Israel. Israeli officials have publicly mentioned Oman, Bahrain and Sudan as countries who may follow suit.

But in a statement earlier this month, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that his government had no mandate to normalise ties with Israel at this time.

Foreign Affairs › Iran: Musician Faces Jail For Working With Women Dancers, Singers by Originality007(op):
Mehdi Rajabian held after reports said his project featured female singers and video showed a woman dancing to his song.

Iranian musician Mehdi Rajabian has said he is under house arrest as he awaits trial for working with female dancers and singers, in the country's latest move to stop female artists from performing.

Rajabian, 30, said he was arrested on August 10 following media reports that his latest project will include women singing and the publication of a video of a woman dancing to his music - both of which can be deemed immoral under Iranian law.

Iran's Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance did not respond to Reuters news agency's requests for comment.

"Even if I go to prison hundreds of times, I need female singing in my project, I need female dance," said Rajabian, who has been jailed twice before over his music.

"Whenever I feel the need to produce this music, I will definitely produce it. I do not censor myself," he told Reuters via text message from the northern city of Sari where is currently out on bail.

"Whenever I feel the need to produce this music, I will definitely produce it. I do not censor myself," he told Reuters via text message from the northern city of Sari where is currently out on bail.

Iran has long censored art and music and arrested hundreds of performers under vaguely defined morality laws that target women and sexual minorities, according to Human Rights Watch.

There are no laws banning women in music but religious decisions issued under Iran's Islamic rulers, who came to power in the 1979 revolution, have been used arbitrarily, said Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran.

"The government would like to propagate ... a traditional attitude towards women's presence in public in general," he said. "It doesn't have to be about performance."

Laws limiting women's freedom

The Iranian government faced nationwide protests last year, sparked by fuel price hikes, which were met with a violent crackdown.

Many young Iranians are disillusioned with laws that limit women's freedom, with fines and jail terms for having their hair uncovered or for wearing clothes deemed immodest. Many have protested by removing their hijabs in public in online videos.

The video which led to Rajabian's latest arrest features Iranian dancer Helia Bandeh, who lives outside Iran, performing to a track from his 2019 peace album Middle Eastern by Sony Music, which features about 100 artists.

Rajabian spent three months in solitary confinement in 2013 for propaganda against the state. In 2015, he served two years behind bars until he was released after a 40-day hunger strike.

Freemuse, a non-profit that supports freedom of artistic expression, said at least 11 artists were prosecuted or sentenced to jail in 2019, with women targeted for performing for mixed - rather than all-female - audiences.

Negar Moazzam was investigated for singing solo in traditional costume and her Instagram account was taken down after a video of the performance went viral on social media, Freemuse said.

It also said male musicians Ali Ghamsari and Hamid Askari were banned from performing in Iran after they allowed women to sing during their concerts, with authorities turning off the sound to stop the women being heard during both shows.

"This has been happening ... because of one-sided interpretations of religious doctrine supported by political power," said Srirak Plipat, executive director of Freemuse.

Meanwhile, Rajabian is undeterred by the latest prison threat as he has been living in isolation for a long time.

"I have been completely alone at home for years," he said. "It was as if I had been transferred from a smaller prison to a larger one."

Foreign Affairs › Turkey Converts Another Former Istanbul Church Into A Mosque by Originality007(op):
Transformation of Kariye Museum comes a month after a controversial conversion of the renowned Hagia Sophia.

Transformation of Kariye Museum comes a month after a controversial conversion of the renowned Hagia Sophia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered another ancient Orthodox Church that became a mosque and then a popular Istanbul museum to be turned back into a Muslim place of worship.

The decision to transform the Kariye Museum into a mosque came just a month after a similarly controversial conversion for the UNESCO World Heritage-recognised Hagia Sophia. The decree on the issue was published in Turkey's official gazette on Friday.

The 1,000-year-old building's history closely mirrors that of the Hagia Sophia - its bigger neighbour on the historic western bank of the Golden Horn on the European side of Istanbul.

The Holy Saviour in Chora was a medieval Byzantine church decorated with 14th-century
frescoes of the Last Judgement that remain treasured in the Christian world.

It was originally converted into the Kariye Mosque half a century after the 1453 conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks.

It became the Kariye Museum after World War II as Turkey pushed ahead with the creation of a more secular new republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

A group of American art historians then helped restore the original church's mosaics and opened them up for public display in 1958.

However, Erdogan has in the past few years placed a greater emphasis on the battles that resulted in the defeat of Byzantium by the Ottomans.

Turkey's top administrative court approved the museum's conversion into a mosque in November.
