Foreign Affairs › Man Shot Dead For 'blasphemy' In Pakistan Courtroom by Originality007(op): 5:14pm On Jul 29, 2020
Tahir Ahmad Naseem, accused of blasphemy by claiming to be a prophet, shot six times during a hearing.

A man accused of blasphemy for claiming that he was a prophet has been shot dead in a courtroom in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, police officials say, the latest violence associated with Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws.

Tahir Ahmad Naseem was shot six times during a hearing in his case at a district court on Wednesday, police official Ijaz Ahmed told Al Jazeera.

"The culprit accepts responsibility for killing him, and says that he killed him for having committed blasphemy," said police official Ahmed. "[The suspect] has been arrested from the scene."

Naseem had been in police custody since 2018 when he was accused of having committed blasphemy by claiming to be a prophet - a violation of Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws that can carry the death penalty for certain offences.

Naseem was accused of having violated sections 295-A, 295-B and 295-C of the Pakistani penal code, which deal with blasphemy against Islam, criminalising, among other things, "defiling the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad".

The last offence carries a mandatory death penalty

Blasphemy killings

While no one has yet been executed under Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws, extrajudicial murders and mob violence have become increasingly common in recent years. Since 1990, at least 77 people have been killed in connection with the accusation, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

Those killed include people accused of blasphemy, their family members, and lawyers and judges who have acquitted people accused of the crime.

Others killed in recent years include singers, teachers deemed to be advocating "un-Islamic" practices, and members of the persecuted Ahmadi sect.

In 2018, Pakistan's Supreme Court passed a landmark verdict in the country's most high-profile blasphemy case, acquitting Christian woman Aasia Bibi after she had spent nine years on death row.

The move angered the country's far-right religious parties, leading to widespread protests led by firebrand cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi's Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party, which has frequently advocated for violence against those accused of blasphemy.

Last week, the provincial assembly in Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province, passed a controversial law on religious issues, giving wide-ranging powers to the government to censor any published material based on vague guidelines of violating religious beliefs.

The law, widely criticised by rights groups, was placed under review on Monday.

Foreign Affairs › Notre Dame Withdraws From Hosting US Presidential Debate by Originality007(op): 10:23am On Jul 28, 2020
The university, the second to pull out as a host, said holding the event would require too many health precautions.

The University of Notre Dame has become the second United States university to withdraw as the host of one of this fall's three scheduled presidential debates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The university was set to host the inaugural face-off between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on September 29. The first debate will now be hosted by Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.

The commission has selected Cleveland Clinic as its health adviser for all three presidential debates and the one scheduled vice presidential debate.

Reverend John I Jenkins, president of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, said in a statement that the health precautions necessary to stage the debate "would have greatly diminished the educational value of hosting the debate on our campus".

Student attendance would be restricted and volunteer opportunities minimised, Jenkins said.

Trump is facing a difficult election season as the one-two punch of the coronavirus and nationwide protests over police brutality have weighed on his approval ratings.

Debate cancellations could bode well for Biden, known for his public gaffes.

Trump, who is pitching himself as the "law and order" candidate, is sending unrequested federal agents to Portland, where they are allegedly brutalising largely peaceful protesters. The move is being seen as an abuse of executive power.

Biden has taken aim at Trump's handling of the coronavirus crisis, which Trump largely downplayed in its initial months.

"For all his bluster about his expertise handling the economy, he's unable to explain how he'll actually help working families hit the hardest," Biden said last week while unveiling a plan for improved child and eldercare. "You know, he's quit on you. He's quit on this country."

The University of Michigan was scheduled to host the second presidential debate but withdrew last month. That debate will now be held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

A third presidential debate will be held in Nashville on October 22. A debate between Vice President Mike Pence and the yet-unnamed Democratic vice presidential nominee will be held in Salt Lake City on October 7.

How can you show videos of the atrocities happening under your nose and say this is what would happen under Biden? What a foolish thing to do, giving away responsibility while at the same time taking away people's right to protest.

Michael Cohen who committed a crime just got his First Amendment rights protected by the courts. Think about it, Cohen is a felon. But you can take away First Amendment rights of your citizens like criminals because they protested with graffiti. Think, these protesters are not criminals in any law of the land.

Even if the plane was transporting weapons they still don't have right to intercept it. Iran is welcomed in Syria and it is a partner in the fight against the terrorists America and its western thugs are arming against Assad government. But we know uncle sam's tactics as usual, create tension and bully every country that refuses to bow to them.

The selective amnesia some of you have ehn.
Imperialist aggression on Iran and Syria used to be once in a month, it moved on to become once in a week, right now it is almost everyday. The moment it becomes more than once daily, it has become a war and the other side will respond appropriately. That is where Israel and US are heading to.
I just hope the world will remember that Israel and US have attacked Iran and Syria almost half a thousand times unprovoked and most times without retaliation from the attacked parties.

Foreign Affairs › Black Lives Matter Mural Defaced Three Times In Seven Days by Originality007(op): 3:44pm On Jul 20, 2020
A Black Lives Matter mural painted on the street outside Trump Tower in New York City has been defaced with paint three times in less than a week.

In the latest incident, two women were arrested around 3pm on Saturday after pouring black paint on the block-long mural outside the building on Manhattan’s chic Fifth Avenue.

Video showed police officers surrounding one of the women as she rubbed the paint on the mural’s bright yellow letters and screamed: “They don’t care about black lives” and “Refund the police”.

One of the officers slipped on the paint and fell to the ground, sustaining injuries to his head and arm, police said.

The city’s largest police union, the Police Benevolent Association, tweeted: “Thankfully our brother will be OK, but this nonsense needs to stop. Our city is in crisis. Paint on the street helps no one.”

Saturday’s vandalism took place less than 24 hours after three people were caught on surveillance video smearing blue paint on the mural, police said.

Officers found the trio nearby a short time later with blue paint on their hands and clothing, police said.
According to the video of the incident, one of them was wearing an “All Lives Matter” shirt as well as other apparel indicating support for US president Donald Trump.

They were arrested, charged with criminal mischief and released with a order to appear in court at a later date.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to look for a man in black shorts and a dark blue T-shirt who was seen splashing red paint on the mural around 12pm on Monday.

The words Black Lives Matter have been painted on streets in New York and elsewhere in recent weeks to show support for the movement demanding justice and reforms after the recent police killings of George Floyd and other black people
