OWOJELA:

Nigeria attained her independence from Britain in 1960 but before the attainment of independence, there were heroes among her citizens that fought for self governance. Looking back in time and following the path of history, Owojela's Blog presents here; a list of five important Nigerians who helped fight for Nigeria’s independence.

Herbert Macaulay:

Born in 1864, Herbert Macaulay was the grandson of Bishop Ajayi Crowther and he was trained as an engineer. He is considered the founder of Nigerian nationalism as the movement was under his influence in the 1920s. He started the nationalist movement because of the belief that the people of different backgrounds living in the British colony of Nigeria needed to come together as one. He returned to Nigeria in 1893 after completing his studies in London as the first Nigerian to be sponsored by the colonial government for a professional course abroad. He joined the colonial civil service and this exposed him to the ills and irregularities of the colonial government which led him to get involved with politics to fight for the rights of Nigerians. He founded the Lagos Daily News to promote the nationalist movement. He was the first Nigerian to establish a political party in 1922, the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP). He became the first national president of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), party he co-founded with Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1944. Macaulay’s political activities were limited to Lagos affairs until the very end of his life and he was on a nationwide campaign in 1946 when he took ill and died on May 7, 1946 in Kano.

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe:

Born on the 16th of November, 1904 in Niger state, Benjamin Nnamdi Azikwe was at the fore-front in the fight for Nigeria’s Independence. He was fondly referred to as “Zik” and became the first president of Nigeria after Nigeria got her independence from the United Kingdom. While working as the editor for the African Morning Post, a daily newspaper in Ghana, Nnamdi Azikiwe promoted pro-African nationalist agenda. Upon his return to Nigeria in 1937, he founded the West African Pilot which was a tool used to promote the cause of Nigerian nationalism. Alongside Herbert Macaulay, he founded the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) in 1944 and he was made the secretary-general of the National Council in 1946. He was later elected to Legislative Council of Nigeria the following year. He was the first Nigerian to be named to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom and he also became the Governor General on the same day. With Nigeria becoming a republic in 1962, he became her first president. He died on May 11, 1996 in Enugu following a protracted illness.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo:

Chief Obafemi Awolowo was born on March 6, 1909 in Ogun state. He was also one of the pioneer leaders that fought for Nigeria’s independence and he introduced free education in the western region in 1955. After completing his education abroad, he returned to Nigeria in 1947 and took up practice as a barrister. However while he had been in London, he wrote his first book “Path to Nigerian Freedom” in which he criticized the British administration and advocated for self governance. He also helped to found the Egbe Omo Oduduwa (Society of the Descendants of Oduduwa, the mythical ancestor of the Yoruba-speaking peoples), an organization devoted to the study and preservation of Yoruba culture. He was also the founder of the political party Action Group in 1950, a party that called for the termination of British rule in Nigeria. In 1954, he became the first premier of the Western Region. During his lifetime he wrote several books such as “Thoughts on the Nigerian Constitution”, “The People’s Republic,” “The Strategy and Tactics of the People”s Republic of Nigeria.” He resigned his position as commisioner of finance and vice chairman of the Federal Executive Council in 1971 to protest the government’s continuation of military rule. He died on May 9, 1987 and was buried on June 6, 1987.

Sir Ahmadu Bello:

Born on June 12, 1910, Sir Ahmadu Bello was the 1st President of the Northern Peoples Party (NPP) in 1951 and he was also the former premier of Northern region. He alongside Abubakar Tafawa Balewa took active roles in the struggle for an independent Nigeria. Upon his return from England, he got a nomination to represent Sokoto in the regional House of Assembly. He used his position there to promote the development of the northern emirates such as Kano, Bornu and Sokoto. He became the first Premier of Northern Nigeria in 1954 and in 1959 independence elections, his party NPC won a plurality of the parliamentary seats. His party later formed an alliance with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s NCNC to form Nigeria’s first indigenous federal government which led to independence from the British colonial masters. He was also responsible for the modernization and unification of the diverse people of the North. He was assassinated in a coup on January 15, 1966 while still serving as premier of Northern Nigeria.

Chief Anthony Enahoro:

Chief Anthony Enahoro was born on 22 July, 1923 and was one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activists. He became Nigeria’s youngest editor ever at the age of 21 when he became the editor of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s newspaper, the Southern Nigerian Defender, Ibadan, in 1944. Chief Enahoro joined the struggle for Nigeria’s independence in the early 1940s acting as a student leader and leading protests. He was on two occasions jailed by the colonial government for sedition and writing satiric articles. In 1953, he became the first to move the motion for Nigeria’s independence and is usually referred to as the father of “Nigeria State.” His motion was however rejected and a successful motion did not come till 1958, the motion was made by Chief Remi Fani-Kayode. He died on December 15, 2010.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to focus on what unites them and promised to work tirelessly for the country’s unity. The President said this in his Independence Day anniversary address to the nation on Monday.

As the country turns 58, the President believes it is on the right part, despite challenges, with much worth celebrating.

“As we celebrate the 58th Anniversary of our independence, we know we are on the right path. Although we have our differences, they count for far less than the values, virtues and common aspirations that unite us as a nation,” he said.

“We have so much for which we should be grateful, and in which we should rightly take pride. Our journey is not finished but we have come a long way.”

During the speech, the third Independence Day address by the President since he rose to power in 2015, he spoke on several issues, including security, the economy, social development, environmental degradation, and the 2019 general elections.

He also pledged to work towards achieved a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria where all can succeed.

“I want to assure you that as President, I will continue to work tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve what really matters: a united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria, where all, irrespective of background, can aspire to succeed,” President Buhari said.

As his first term draws to a close, President Buhari who is seeking another term in office stressed that progress has been made in the war against insurgency, the herdsmen/farmers crisis, diversifying the economy and more with youths at the centre of the drive.

He said, “At the forefront, have always been our youths. They have been at the vanguard of the struggle for independence. They fought in the war to keep the country united. And it was they who kept alive the struggle for democracy and human rights in our country at times when these were at risk, especially following the June 12th, 1993 election and the historic 2015 election process.

“Even today, our youths play a central role in Nigeria’s continuing progress and developments in all fields of our national endeavour – technology, agriculture, mining, engineering and especially the creative arts. Together, we are building a more diverse, inclusive and self-reliant economy.”

As a result, the President said his administration had, in the past three years, introduced many policies and programmes targeted at youth development and youth empowerment.

“We support the ‘not too young to run’ legislation aimed at giving the youths greater say in our national politics and governance,” he said.

“The school feeding programme in primary schools is aimed at encouraging enrolment and attendance. We are building on what we have already introduced to support schools and universities to which funds have recently been released for upgrade of facilities, training programs for our entrepreneurs, and rehabilitation schemes for victims of terrorism and human trafficking.”

Although the President hailed the impact of technology, he warned disruptive and corrosive forces bent on misusing the social media

Politics / Re: NYSC Saga: Shittu ‘exposes’ Ajimobi, Says He Also Skipped The Scheme by osazeeblue01: 10:41pm On Sep 30, 2018
Khed:
Following his disqualification from the Oyo gubernatorial race by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for skipping NYSC, Communications Minister, Adebayo Shittu, has claimed Governor Abiola Ajimobi equally skipped the mandatory national youth service scheme.

The ruling APC had on Friday disqualified Shittu from the Oyo governorship race after the minister admitted that he deliberately skipped NYSC because he felt his membership of the Oyo House of Assembly after he graduated from the university had served as national youth service.

But in a revelation he made on Channels Television flagship programme “Politics Today” on Sunday, Shittu said Ajimobi, who recently indicated that he would be running for senate after his tenure as governor, allegedly does not have NYSC certificate.

The minister said the NYSC saga over which he was disqualified was allegedly ochestrated by Governor Ajimobi to get him out of the race because the governor knows that he will jail him if he becomes governor of Oyo State.

He equally claimed to have petitioned the National Working Committee of the APC over his disqualification. He dedcribed the indirect governirship primary as an exercise in futility.

Shittu further stated on the programme that he has gone to court and that he believed he would get justice. The minister described his NYSC saga as a constitutional crisis that would be resolve by the court.

Politics / Re: Osun Rerun: PDP Attempted To Win By Fraud But Police Thwarted It’s Plans – APC by osazeeblue01: 5:52pm On Sep 27, 2018
OyiboUgbo04:
The ruling All Progressives Congress in Osun state has accused the major opposition People’s Democratic Party of attempts to win the supplementary election by fraud but the police thwarted it’s plans.
A statement issued by the director of publicity and strategy of APC on Thursday, Kunle Oyatomi noted that “the people of the state have spoken.”
“The PDP was unable to manipulate the result this time around, so they are crying foul. We have always known and have made ourselves clear before the election that the PDP had made elaborate arrangement to rig the election through the manipulation of the card readers and it was this process that made them got the votes, allocated to them in the first ballot.
“Nobody expected the PDP to even come second. Most people in Osun have the belief that it would be a straight fight between the APC and SDP. But as God would have it, Osun was saved from the vultures.
“We like Osun people to understand that the run off votes went the way it did because the PDP was unable to manipulate the card readers this time around and fortunately the police thwarted their plot of buying and trying to use the PVCs of suspecting voters. That was why some of their leaders were arrested. So the PDP should look for other excuses.
They attempted to win by fraud, they failed in the first round and eventually lost the rerun election,” APC said.

Politics / Re: We Are Banning Okada Riders From Major Roads In Osun, They Are Thieves - Adeleke by osazeeblue01: 10:34am On Sep 19, 2018
Ifedamolah:
Osun West Senator and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) flagbearer, Senator Ademola Adeleke has vowed to remove all motorcycles (okada) from major roads in Osogbo, Osun state Capital if elected Governor.

Mr. Adeleke said,  “My Government is considering stoping Okada Riders from plying major roads within Osogbo axis and nearby environs to address incessant but impending robbery cases and assaults on people. When we do, the ban on motorcycle operators would be total because they are thieves corroborators, if not thieves.

By the ban on motorcycle operators in the state, we shall partner with private transport company in Lagos with borrowed funds to invest more in transport business of buses to ease the burden of the people.  It is not that we want to leave the people reckless and in anguish, it is an attempt to stop thieves and put a stop to long haul of crime in the capital. Most of these are the Okada riders, they work hand in hand to rob road users by snatching bags and assulting students, he said. We shall work with security operatives to effect the ban.

“It is not in doubt that some of these Okada operators are criminals. They are the people snatching bags from women and students. By the ban is invoked, over 2,000 thieves will leave the state because they have lost their jobs,” he said.

Senator Demola Adeleke said he is going into the election with high hopes of intentions for the people of Osun. He further clarified insinuations that he is harbouring thugs for the elections; why do I have to harbour thugs. They are everywhere in Osogbo and towns, our money can get them here to protect us if Buhari security has been compromised.

Ebullience:
Donald Duke, presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), says he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because the “umbrella was breaking”.

Duke served as governor of Cross River for eight years under the platform of PDP which has umbrella as its symbol.

Speaking during the inauguration of Cross River SDP secretariat in Calabar on Tuesday, the former governor said the SDP is on a mission to save the country from bad leadership.

“People have asked me why I left the PDP, and I always tell them that I left because the umbrella was breaking,” he said,

“The problem with the PDP was that it does automatic things automatically. With me as the presidential candidate of the SDP, we will drown other parties.

“The SDP as a party is on a rescue mission from the danger the country is into, because there is no positive hope for Nigerians.

“We have come to put the country in the right direction; therefore, SDP is prepared and committed to take hold of the country come 2019. We have come to build, recover and restore our dear country from the bad leadership of the so-called APC and PDP ideologies.”
