Politics / Re: Why Buhari’s ‘failure’ Won’t Stop His Victory In 2019 – Shehu Sani by osazeeblue01: 12:29pm On Sep 17, 2018
AjijolaBlog:
Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has declared that the failures of President Muhammadu Buhari won’t “stop him from emerging the next leader of
Nigeria.”Sani, a lawmaker on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, stressed that despite some “challenges and failures” on the part of Buhari, Nigerians will vote for him in 2019.

Featuring on Channels Television, Sani said, “Well, I never have a doubt that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the election in 2019, because I believe that there are lots of achievements that could be attached to his stewardship in the last three and half years.

“We can also see some challenges and some failures on his side. But on a general note, I believe that those who voted him in 2015 still have hope and belief in him that he can lead them to where they want to be.

“And for the opposition party, it is a positive development that you have a lot of people struggling to lead this country. It is interesting.

“And the statements they have been making, there is nothing wrong with it. It is just putting the party on its toes. It will in no way stop the president from emerging the next leader of Nigeria.”

AreaNews:
Only a PDP President will unite Nigeria - Goodluck Jonathan

According to the former President, Goodluck Jonathan, the ex-Jigawa State governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Alhaji Sule Lamido, is a courageous and experienced leader, capable of uniting the country, if given the mandate next year.

A statement by Lamido’s media aide on the Social Media, Mansur Ahmed, said Jonathan made the comment when members of Sule Lamido National Campaign Council visited him at his Yenagoa residence in Bayelsa State, yesterday.

The former president, who expressed the belief that the next president after President Muhammadu Buhari, will come from the PDP next year, also noted that Nigerians are today more divided than ever and that it required a PDP president to unite it.

“Sule, you are somebody that is highly courageous, zealous, committed and experienced. You can perform wonderfully well, and I believe the next president that will take over from Buhari God willing will be from PDP, and the task for him is to unify the country because Nigeria is now divided more than ever.

“In 2011, it was too difficult for a northern governor to speak about Buhari, but Sule you made a lot of meaningful political statements that really captured the minds of Nigerians and PDP supporters and you really sold the party to the people.

“I am always happy to listen to you, because you know the history of Nigeria’s politics. When I was Vice President and later President, I went round Jigawa State to commission a lot of developmental projects, Jigawa witnessed a lot of wonders under your administration.

“I know you are somebody who believes in the unity and sanctity of one Nigeria and your political history, philosophy and ideology are all about leftist and humanism not capitalist, I wish you well in all your consultations and campaign, “ the former president said.

In his response, Lamido, thanked the former president for the warm reception accorded him and his team.
He said: “I am here to formally inform you that I am running for the presidency in 2019 on the platform of our great party, the PDP.

“I am from the old generation, but I also relate with the new generation. I was a former member of House of Representatives in 1979, but I was also a governor from 2007 to 2015. So I am the bridge between the old and the new generation.

“I have been through a lot of political participation, we must think and see how we can give back to Nigeria even for once, because Nigeria has been there for us. Nigeria has dignified and honored us.

“I know your commitment, because you have a large heart, you have been demonised, blackmailed and called names, but you remain silent, resolute and forging ahead in all your activities.

“I know your commitment, because you have a large heart, you have been demonized, blackmailed and called names, but you remain silent, resolute and forging ahead in all your activities.

“I have gone round 35 states and consulted with the party officials, stakeholders, BoT, NWC and our national leaders, including you. In all my consultations, I admitted that there are challenges in Nigeria, where a brother is killing a brother, fighting each other, in every village a brother is fighting a brother because of APC. But as a giant of Africa and leader of the black race, we must rescue Nigeria, this is why I am offering my myself for that role.”

Angelanest:
A wielder identified as Mr Dalhatu, was killed following an attack on senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, the lawmaker representing Taraba Central, during a visit to Bali town for an interaction.

It was scooped that the deceased died as a result of stray bullet fired by the police to disperse the political thugs who attacked the senator.

The security agents shot sporadically in the air to rescue the lawmaker from the thugs who were reportedly armed with daggers, knives and other deadly weapons.

This is happening after the crisis rocking the Taraba State chapter of the All Progressives Congress took a dramatic turn recently, following the swearing in of Ibrahim El-Suldi as the chairman of the party in the state. He was sworn in by the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, in Abuja.

The embattled Chairman, Dr Abdulmumuni Vaki, was elected at the recent APC State congresses and was inaugurated by John Oyegun while the current National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.

The new APC chairman, Ibrahim Elsuldi who came into town to take over the Secretariat was prevented from gaining entrance by the security agents who man the gate of the temporary office of the party in the State.

Supporting youths of both factions were seen carrying cutlasses and axe at Hwmaruwa way where the office is located close to government house Jalingo.

Politics / Re: 2019: Second Term For Buhari will further Weaken the Nigeria Economy – HSBC UK by osazeeblue01: 11:38am On Sep 12, 2018
IllegalMoney:
A multinational banking and financial services company, HSBC, has said a second term for President Muhammadu Buhari would stunt the economic development of the country.
In a report, put together by its Global Research Unit, entitled, “Nigeria, Papering over the Cracks,” HSBC said Nigeria’s current economic struggles look set to continue if Buhari wins a second term in office.

According to the financial institution, the president’s “approval ratings sit near all time lows,” a development, it said, “largely reflects the impact of Nigeria’s painful recession in 2016-17 and the sustained economic hardship that has accompanied his presidency, including rapidly rising joblessness, and poverty.

A second term for Mr. Buhari raises the risk of limited economic progress and further fiscal deterioration, prolonging the stagnation of his first term, particularly if there is no move towards completing reform of the exchange rate system or fiscal adjustments that diversify government revenues away from oil.”

The multinational banking group, which is Europe’s largest by total assets, noted that while higher oil prices have brightened Nigeria’s macro outlook, boosting export earnings, improving the supply of foreign exchange, and supporting naira stability, the Buhari administration was yet to address the economy’s structural shortcomings.

It said, “Economic growth remains sluggish and reliant on the rebound in oil output while the non-oil economy, which accounts for about 90 per cent of GDP, continues to languish with many service sectors still mired in contraction.

Joblessness continues to rise, up almost three-fold in three years to 19 per cent in Q3 2017, pushing the number in poverty to 87 million. “Meanwhile, current account improvements may have pivoted on higher oil prices, but they also derive from on-going import restrictions and limited FX access for many sectors of the economy.”

DAILY POST reports that the president is set to once again lead the All Progressives Congress, APC, having received his nomination form on Tuesday.

Politics / Re: Tinubu Instructed Us To Work For Sanwo-olu's Emergence As Governor -APC Elders by osazeeblue01: 11:34am On Sep 12, 2018
nairavsdollars:
The scenario that played out in the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the build-up to the reelection of Babatunde Raji Fashola, former governor of Lagos, is repeating itself as the chances of his successor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who is seeking a second term is slim.

Daily Independent had last week exclusively reported that Ambode may have incurred the wrath of some elders in the party who felt shortchanged by his administration.

Sources even alleged that the demand by Bola Tinubu, National Leader of APC, during the last stakeholders’ meeting of the party on August 14 that the Lagos State chapter will go for direct primaries is targeted at the governor.

As at Tuesday, all the 20 local government chairmen and 37 Local Council Development Areas’ (LCDAs) chairmen in Lagos have endorsed the governorship ambition of a dark horse, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a former Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, who is now the Managing Director of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSDPC).

Daily Independent gathered that the Nomination and Expression of Interest forms were purchased for Sanwo-Olu by the Mandate Group, a group of party leaders and local government chairmen loyal to Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

In a viral video circulating on Tuesday which was seen by Daily Independent, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, the APC State Vice Chairman, Lagos East Senatorial District, said their leader, Tinubu, has instructed them that Sanwo-Olu is the next governor of Lagos State.

Speaking further, Olusanya, who was a former Commissioner for Agric in Lagos State added that it was Tinubu who instructed them to queue behind Babatunde Fashola in 2006, queue behind Governor Ambode during the 2015 election and now support Sanwo-Olu as the candidate for APC in the 2019 elections.

He said, “In 2006, we were in the council, cabinet of Lagos State. We have a large number of aspirants wanting to be governor. When Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) gave the signal, those of us who believe that this is a visionary leader who can be trusted, because it is God who appoints a leader in a season. This season, this is the man whom God appoints and we all accepted.

“Where (he) Tinubu directed us then, many protested then that his preferred candidate doesn’t know anybody in the party, be it ward, women, or party leader. Then, we went to Adebola House, it was a serious fight but our oga (leader) insisted that this is my preferred candidate who will succeed me as governor of Lagos State? Did we enjoy him or not? We enjoyed him because he performed creditably well.

“During the 2015 election, our oga again gave signal. Some people again protested, saying this person you are canvassing for the position is just a civil servant. Each time oga makes recommendation or say this is where we are going, some of us who believe in him, we don’t question it.

“We follow it and we have never regretted it. This one that oga has again given us and we accepted it because we believe our oga and we believe in God because it is God that chooses a leader in any season. The leader God has chosen for us, this one he has given us as his preferred candidate, we will be successful.

“We may be wondering why is this so? But if we yield to our boss’ direction wholeheartedly, we will be happy at the end of it. His preferred candidate right now is our man, our brother, our son, our member, our friend. It is the person Jagaban hands over to us as his choice, we will follow. By the grace of God and the support of the people of Lagos State, we will assume the leadership in the State House by God’s grace. Sanwo-Olu will sit as the next governor of Lagos State. If he assumes the position, none of us will be missing in action”.

Olusanya’s position was corroborated by Cardinal James Odunmbaku, the former Deputy Chairman of APC in Lagos, who emphatically said, “Honourable Babajide Sanwo-Olu is the incoming governor of Lagos State”.

Speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday, a local government chairman who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they have respect for Ambode as governor but their ultimate loyalty as far as Lagos politics is concerned goes to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is the political godfather of the state.

The female council boss when asked about the earlier endorsement of Ambode by the 57 council chairmen in the state said, “Yes, we all endorsed Ambode for second term given the fact that he performed and the tradition in the state since 1999 where serving governors are asked to return. But now that our party leaders have withdrawn support for the governor, we have no option than to toe that line”.

https://independent.ng/2019-tinubu-apc-leaders-move-to-stop-ambodes-re-election/

Tinubu is not God. I guess he has reached his time limit. Ambode should try and secure ADC or SDP ticket since pdp has given Otedola their ticket. Goodbye to Tinubu.

Politics / Re: 23 PDP Reps Set To Defect To APC by osazeeblue01: 8:26pm On Sep 11, 2018
Ecstasy154:
About 23 members of the House of Representatives under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to dump the main opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Trust learnt on Tuesday.

The prospective defectors, it was gathered, were uncomfortable with alleged manipulations by their state governors to “anoint new candidates” in place of the incumbent “seasoned legislators.”

States said to be affected by the planned defection include Gombe, Benue, Kogi, Enugu, Ekiti, Anambra, Cross River, and others whose lawmakers are at loggerheads with their governors.

A source privy to the planned mass defection revealed that, as an indication that all is not well with the PDP, meetings of committees saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a smooth consensus primary election across the states were deadlocked last week without any reasonable outcome.

The source further disclosed that the APC is already dangling automatic tickets to lure the aggrieved lawmakers into their fold, should they perfect their plans to cross over to the ruling party.

“We want to leave not because it is our wish but the governors have pushed us to the wall.
“We have fought physically and mentally to defend the PDP and democracy. Despite our commitment to the party, see what the governors are doing to us,” the source said rather emotionally.

To perfect their plans, the affected lawmakers are said to be currently pushing for an earlier resumption from the ongoing annual recess of the National Assembly, as against the already speculated date of October 9.

However, efforts to reach the Chairman, PDP caucus and Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Chukwuka Onyema (PDP, Anambra) to comment on the development, were not successful as his lines were said to be switched off.

Politics / Re: Foreign Reserves Decline By $2.3bn In 11 Weeks by osazeeblue01: 2:34pm On Sep 09, 2018
engineerboat:

There are concerns over the steady decline of Nigeria’s foreign reserves since the last three months despite the rise in oil prices and accruals from foreign bonds issuance.

Exclusive findings by LEADERSHIP Sunday showed that the reserves recorded a huge decline from $47,787,183,153 billion where it was on June 22, 2018 to a “worrying” point of $45,468,258,469 billion on Thursday, September 6.

The reserves took a bullish peak between May 18 – when it was $47.799 billion, and June 21 – when it had the last high figure of $47,784,255,384 billion, according to data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Apart from oil which accounts for about 80 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign reserves, the federal government is also hoping to borrow N849 billion (denomination in dollars) from the foreign market to finance the N1.6 trillion budget deficit. Experts have blamed the continuous decline in reserves on three factors: increased dollar supply by the CBN to the foreign exchange market, instability in the nation’s securities and exchange market, and the coming general elections in the country.

Those who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday on the development at the weekend expressed worry that the situation could have negative implications on the fragile growth of the economy and consumer demand.

They said the decline in the external reserves would persist in the short term as demand for the green back grows amid the continued intervention of CBN in order to curtail the pressure on the naira at both the I&E and BDC segments as well as the expected increased demand by portfolio investors who have been reported to be leaving the country ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Transactions on the floor of the equities reportedly took a bearish direction last week, with most highly capitalised securities not left out in the price nosedive, a development that forced market capitalisation to lose by about N4 billion in the weeklong trading. By the close of business on Friday, the stock market had fallen further by 0.88 per cent amid sustained profit taking activity.

The All–Share Index shed 304.15 absolute points, representing a decline of 0.88 per cent to close at 34,110.22 points. Also, the market capitalisation declined by N111 billion to close at N12.453 trillion. The fall was ascribed to profit-taking by investors or shareholders. LEADERSHIP Sunday reports that Nigeria operates a relatively regulated foreign exchange regime.

The CBN had intensified injection of hard currencies into the forex market since it signed a currency swap deal with the Peoples Bank of China to ease pressure on the Nigerian foreign exchange market. On Friday, the Central Bank injected the sum $303.91 million into the interbank retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales.

This is in addition to the sale of CNY 46.58 million in the spot and short-tenored forwards. The director, Corporate Communications at the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said the releases were for the payment of Renminbi denominated Letters of Credit for agriculture and raw materials. He added that the sales in the Chinese Yuan were through a combination of spot and short-tenored forwards, arising from bids received from authorised dealers.

Politics / Re: Abba Kyari Reacts To N29.9m Bribe Allegation by osazeeblue01: 9:53am On Sep 09, 2018
ishowdotgmail:
Abba Kyari, chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, says he has instructed his lawyers to file a libel suit against those who peddled bribery allegation against him.

During a recent radio programme on Berekete Family Radio 101.1FM, Abuja, one Bako Kyari, who identified himself as a nephew to the chief of staff, said Kyari and one Sani Ado, whom he claimed worked with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), collected N29.9 million from him in order to facilitate the award of a contract.
However, in an email interview, the chief of staff said there is no truth in the “malicious story”.
“I have instructed my lawyers to take legal action against all those who have peddled this falsehood,” he said.
He also said no amount of mud “will stick or stain my integrity”.
“There is no iota of truth whatsoever even in dreamland in this malicious story. We cannot allow reasoned and reasonable debate to be hijacked by the frenzied fantasies of a cynical and dishonest minority,” he said.
“A lie becomes no less of a lie simply by repetition.”
He insinuated that there was campaign of calumny against him.
“I will continue to ensure that business-as-usual is unsustainable, ask questions and question answers – in the interest of our country, above any other consideration,” he said.
His accuser said he had written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but the commission refused to treat it, insisting that it could not investigate the president’s aide.
Bako, who is from Bama, Borno state, told Berekete Family that when he lost his father, Kyari came to commiserate with the family and then promised him the contract.
He said on getting to Abuja, he met with Kyari at Caledonia Hotel, Maitama, four times.
Bako alleged that Kyari asked him to pay Ado some money to facilitate the award of the contract.
He said he approached a friend who lent him some money, adding that he also sold his property in order to raise the N29.9 million which he allegedly used in facilitating the contract.

While the presidency has kept mum on the controversial railway scholarship awarded relations of senior government officials by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), President Muhammadu Buhari met with Nigerian students undergoing training on railway transportation in China.

The meeting held while Mr Buhari was in China for the 7th Summit of the Forum on China — Africa Cooperation (FOCAC 2018).

In a post on Twitter by the Presidency, Sunday, the training on railway transport was one of the key elements of the infrastructure partnership between both nations.

The tweet read, “President @MBuhari today met with Nigerian students undergoing training on railway transportation in China. One of the key elements of the infrastructure partnership with the Chinese Govt is training / capacity-building for Nigerian professionals”.

2,608 1,235 people are talking about this
On July 30, this newspaper reported how the CCECC had concluded the selection of successful applicants for its controversial railway scholarship.

The scholarship, which involved sponsorship of over 40 Nigerian undergraduate students in Chinese universities to study railway engineering is part of the CCECC’s corporate social responsibility, having benefitted from a major railway and other construction projects across Nigeria.

Rather than make the scholarship available for all eligible Nigerian youth, the scholarship slots were simply shared among wards of select government ministers and other top public officials.

The top officials, who benefitted were
identified in a document used by the construction firm, CCECC , to permit selected candidates to participate in the scholarship interview.

On June 20, at the ministry of transport which coordinated the application process, scores of young Nigerians, who travelled long distances from all over the country, besieged the ministry complex to submit applications for the scholarships.

To their amazement, authorities at the transport ministry rejected their applications, saying no such opportunities exist. The youth then protested, and at a point blocked the ministry’s entrance.

To douse escalating tension by the restless youth, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Sabiu Zakari, issued a press statement dismissing claims that the Chinese firm was offering “railway engineering scholarships”.
What Mr Zakari did not state in his press release was that his office had shared the available scholarship slots among top government officials.

Regardless of the claim that the scholarship was false, the youth stormed the CCECC headquarters the following day, which was the scheduled date for the commencement of the interviews.

The Chinese firm was conducting interviews for about 42 shortlisted applicants in the scholarship scheme that would see successful candidates train as railway engineers in China.

On getting there, the applicants found out that, without a signed letter by a minister or permanent secretary, they were not be allowed to participate in the interview.
Only candidates who had been nominated by top officials were allowed for the interview.

In July, PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Independent Corruption Practices Commission (ICPC) commenced investigations into the allegations.

Although PREMIUM TIMES cannot establish that the students visited by Mr. Buhari are the same ‘connected youth’ who got their scholarships to China through the controversial process, the ICPC was told by CCECC officials that only the candidates nominated by ministers and other top officials of the Buhari administration were allowed to take part in the selection interview and made the final list.
The CCECC also told the investigators that the names of students finally selected had been submitted to the Chinese Embassy for processing, sources in the ICPC told PREMIUM TIMES.

According to sources, the CCECC was invited on Thursday, July 5. It sent its representatives and they “cooperated with the investigators,” the source said.

“They confirmed everything you people wrote. It was exactly as you reported,” a source at the agency told PREMIUM TIMES.

The CCECC officials also reportedly told the investigators they had concluded the selection process from the list which they claimed they got from the transport ministry.
The controversial railway scholarship is, however, not the only one being provided by the CCECC, which is apparently focusing on education as its CSR.

Shortly after the scandal, the CCECC and Chinese government offered more scholarships on railway transportation to university students in the country.

One of such was the award of scholarships to 30 students from the Ahmadu Bello University.

1. Chief of staff, John Kelly: "He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. He's gone off the rails. We're in crazy town,"

2. Defense Secretary, James Mattis: "Having the understanding of "a fifth or sixth grader."

3. Former personal lawyer John Dowd: "a fucking liar," telling Trump he would end up in an "orange jumpsuit" if he testified to special counsel Robert Mueller.
