Technology MarketNokia To Release Android Tab Running Lollipop by oshokay(op): 12:35am On Nov 21, 2014
Nokia is launching an Android-powered tablet, marking the Finnish company's return to consumer electronics. The suprise launch pits the firm against Microsoft, which completed its takeover of Nokia's previous mobile-devices business in April. The N1 tablet is due to go on sale in China towards the start of 2015, ahead of other countries.Nokia said it was not making the device itself, but had licensed its brand, design and softwareto a third-party.Taiwanese manufacture Foxconn is the licensee."This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet," said Sebastian Nystrom, head of products at Nokia Technologies, who announced the product at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki. One company watcher was startled by the move."I'm surprised how quickly Nokia has decided to do this. But equally if Nokia was going to do anything with its brand, it was going to have to do it quickly," said Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight."The brand has been in a consistent state of freefall over the past three years, so if they aregoing to extract any value from it they needed to do it sooner than later."The N1 is a 7.9in (20.1cm) aluminium-framed tablet, whose design resembles the iPad Mini.Unlike Apple's device, however, it is powered by Google's Android 5.0 operating system, features an Intel Atom processor and has a Micro-USB slot. The planned retail price is $249 (£159).The N1 features a 64-bit Intel quad-core Atom processor and an aluminium shellIt runs Nokia's own Z Launcher user interface - known as a skin - on top of Android. Here are the complete specs of the device:*.7.9-inch, 2048x1536 (4:3) IPS LCD with Gorilla Glass 3 and fully laminated zero air gap display*.64-bit 2.3GHz Intel Atom Z3580 processor, PowerVR G6430 GPU with 2GB RAM*.32GB built-in memory (non-expandable)*.8 megapixel rear camera, 5 megapixel front camera*.Dual channel 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.0*.Micro-USB 2.0 with a Type-C reversible connector*.Stereo speakers*.5300mAh battery*.Unibody aluminum design; available in Natural Aluminum or Lava Gray .

HealthDoctor Cures Ebola With HIV Drugs by oshokay(op): 1:52pm On Sep 27, 2014
doctor in rural Liberia inundated with Ebola patients says
he's had good results with a treatment he tried out of sheer
desperation: an HIV drug.
CNN reports that Dr. Gobee Logan had given the drug,
lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived.
That's a 7% mortality rate. Across West Africa, the virus
has killed 70% of its victims.
Outside Logan's Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his
recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside
the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone
else.
"My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was
vomiting," Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her
bout with the virus. "They gave me medicine, and I'm
feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat -- we're feeling fine
in our bodies."
Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine
and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so
of their illness. The two patients who died received it
between days five and eight.
"I'm sure that when [patients] present early, this
medicine can help," Logan said. "I've proven it right in
my center."
Logan is mindful that lamivudine can cause liver and other
problems, but he says it's worth the risk since Ebola is so
deadly. He also knows American researchers will say only
a real study can prove effectiveness. That would involve
taking a much larger patient population and giving half of
them lamivudine and the other half a placebo.
"Our people are dying and you're taking about
studies?" he said. "It's a matter of doing all that I can
do as a doctor to save some people's lives."
Logan said he got the idea to try lamivudine when he read
in scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate inside the
body in much the same way.
"Ebola is a brainchild of HIV," he said. "It's a
destructive strain of HIV."
At first he tried an HIV drug called acyclovir, but it didn't
seem to be effective. Then he tried lamivudine on a
healthcare worker who'd become ill, and within a day or
two he showed signs of improvement and survived. Dr.
Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan's
approach has some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide
analog, and other drugs in this class are being studied to
treat Ebola.

RomanceRe: Some Very Silly Things Girls Should Stop Doing by oshokay(m): 6:18am On Sep 04, 2014
handysuzy: Call it a counter thread if you must

I just don't know why many of us indulge in these irritating behaviors

1. Asking a guy you just met for recharge card
This is very annoying. It makes you look cheap. A guy met you in the afternoon, gave you a call in the evening and you are already asking
him to send you a recharge card. Trust me, that guy can never respect you. He might eventually send you the recharge card, but the only thing on his mind would be to sleep with you once or twice and get rid of you.

2. Judging a guy by his looks
I believe guys should be the ones that should be hell bent on beauty and physical appearance. Dont fall for a guy chiefly because he looks good physically. You need to access his acumen, sense of judgment, level-headedness, dreams etc. What makes a good guy is by far more than just looks.

3. Having sex with a guy the day you met him
This is uncalled for. You automatically lose some respect if you allow this guy to get down with you the first day you met him. Little kisses here and there and some cuddling would do, if you are tempted, let him feel your boobs just to get yourself wet. The longer you make a guy wait, the more he will appreciate you and value your body. No one values what he gets easily.

4. Pouting of lips to take a selfie
Do we have to do this? Its so disgusting. Okay fine, I am guilty of this too and am going to stop. Every picture of a girl on facebook shows her pouting her lips to look pretty. This doesn't make us look prettier; it only make us look childish. I didnt realise it makes me look like a kid until my boyfriend told me 5 days ago.

5. Manipulating a guy to over spend for you on a date.
Because he looks rich and came to the eatery in a car makes you feel you can drain his pocket abi. This instantaneously tells the guy that you are a hungry girl and from a very poor background. Cant you just order for just one ice cream or a soft drink and be fine with this cool dude. Even if you do not like him, do not do this. Trust me, the guy will never call you again and if he does he only wants to get laid just once. The worst is taking your friend along so that you can both finish him.

6. Forcing yourself on a guy that doesn't give a damn about you
If a guy likes you, he will show it. Dont you ever force yourself on a guy. You can indicate some green lights but don't force yourself on him. If you do he will treat you like shit. I have read some post here on Nairaland telling girls how to woo a guy. Dont try it. There are a million subtle ways to make him see that you like him than forcing yourself on him and asking him out outrightly.

7. Keeping too many boyfriends
Cant we just be cool with one guy we love? 8 boyfriends equals to 8 dicks. Jesus Christ! How many guys are combing you?

8. Excessive Make Up
Excessive make up make us look like masquerades, ojuju calabar like Tiwa Savage. Trust me, guys dont like girls with excessive make-ups. I have heard guys say it more than a thousand times how much they hate excessive make up on ladies. Look natural and if you must apply make ups, make it very lite.
handysuzy brilliant!!!

HealthIvory Coast Bans All Flights From Ebola Affected Countries by oshokay(op):
The Ivory Coast announced Monday that it has banned all flights from countries hit by Ebola as part of steps to prevent the deadly virus from reaching the west African nation. The government said in a statement that it has forbidden all “carriers from transporting passengers” from these countries. It has also decided “on the suspension until further notice” flights by its national airline, Air Cote d’Ivoire, to and from these locations. The government did not name the countries but nearly 1,000 people have died from Ebola in Liberia, Sierre Leone, Guinea andNigeria, which are all in West Africa. The government said it has also decided to increase preventive measures at Abidjan airport where “all passengers on arrival will have to have their temperatures taken with an infrared thermometer.”Ebola causes flu-like symptoms including fever. In the worst cases, it causes unstoppable bleeding. It spreads among humans via bodily fluids including sweat, so can be spread by simply touching an infected person. With no vaccine, patients believed to have caught the virus have to be isolated to stop further contagion. No case of Ebola has surfaced in the Ivory Coast which began implementing measures to prevent the spread of the disease in March.British Airways said August 5 that it has suspended flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone following concerns about the spread of Ebola.Dubai’s Emirates Airline said earlier this month it was suspending flights to Guinea.Pan-African airline Aruj and ASKY suspended all flights to and from the capitals of Liberia and Sierra Leone following the death of a Liberian passenger at the end of July in the Nigerian city of Lagos.Chad on Saturday suspended all flights fromNigeria.Officials said Sunday thatNigeriahad stopped the Gambian national carrier, Gambia Bird Airlines, from flying into the country, alleging “unsatisfactory” measures by the airline to contain the spread of Ebola.

BusinessNigeria To Earn N672m daily From Shell's New Oil Well by oshokay(op): 9:05am On Aug 08, 2014
Yah I know, the question that comes to your mind is where is all that money going to end up. Well definitely I don't think it will be aimed at creating new jobs for the unemployed or constant electricity supply or teachers who the government still struggles to pay their salaries. No No we have senators that play scrabble and sleep during meetings and at the end of the month they get 24 million naira as their salary. Here's the detail from vanguardNigeria'scrude oil production is expected to rise by 40,000 barrels per day, as Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, SNEPCo, yesterday commenced production from the first well at the Bonga North West deep-water development offshore Nigeria. This translates to a crude earnings of N672 million accruable to the country ona daily basis.Shell, in a statement stated that the Bonga Floating Production, Storage and Offloading, FPSO, vessel has been upgraded to handle the additional oil flow from Bonga North West.According to the company, the investments made by it and its other project partners in the Bonga North West project include upgrades of local contractors' facilities and providing specialised training for Nigerians to work in the energy industry.Commenting on the development, Mr Andrew Brown, Upstream International Director, Shell says "it is also good news for Nigeria, as it is a new source of oil revenues and strengthens Nigeria's deep-water expertise, a key driver of economic development."This is an excellent addition to our deep-water portfolio – a key growth theme for shell's world-wide upstream business. The company also noted that four oil producing wells and two water injection wells in the Bonga North West development will be connected to the FPSO, from where oil is loaded onto tankers for shipping around the world. The Bonga project, which began producing oil and gas in 2005, was Nigeria's first deep-water development in water depths over 1 000 metres.Bonga North West represents a significant step forward for the project, as the company said oil from the sub-sea facilities is transported by a new undersea pipeline to the existing Bonga floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) export facility.SNEPCO said the Bonga North West project is part of its long-standing commitment to developing deep-water engineering skills in Nigeria. The Bonga project is operated by SNEPCo, which holds a 55 percent stake. The other project partners are Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria (Deepwater) Limited (20 percent), Total E&P Nigeria Limited (12,5 percent) and Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited (12,5 percent) under a Production Sharing Contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

HealthToo Early To Send Experimental Ebola Drugs To Africa - Obama by oshokay(op): 11:08am On Aug 07, 2014
The Federal Government says it has reached out to the United States Centre for Disease Control to request for the unapproved Ebola drug Zmapp, for the treatment of affected persons in Nigeria but US President, Barack Obama said yesterday August 6th that it's too early to send the unapproved experimental drug, Zmapp serum to Africa where the outbreak of the Ebola virus has recorded more deaths and threatens human existence. Theserum has proven to be effective in treating Ebola cases as two American doctors who were infected with the virus in Liberia are currently being treated in the US and are said to have improved after the use of the drug. Continue...According to AFP, President Obama suggested that affected African countries should focus more on building strong public infrastructures."I think we have to let the scientist guide us. And I don’t think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful".On whether he would help fast track the approval of the drug should medical experts conclude that the drug is effective, President Obama said;"I think it’s premature for me to say that because I don’t have enough information. I don’t have enough data right now to offer an opinion on that.”While stressing that the deadly virus is not airborne, Obama said"the countries affected are the first to admit that what’s happened here is the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren’t able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough. As a consequence, it spread more rapidly than has been typical with the periodic Ebola outbreaks that occurred previously." According to him the US is currently working with their European partners as well as the World Health Organization (W.H.O) to provide resources to contain the virus.I don't know about you guys but to me unapproved drugs is better than nothing.

HealthLiberian With Ebola Virus Intentionally Came To Nigeria? by oshokay(op): 9:29am On Aug 07, 2014
As a result of the death of Liberian Ebola victim, Patrick Sawyer in a Lagos hospital, there has been several people being infected with the Ebola virus whom he came in contact with directly or indirectly . One of the Nigerian nurses who attended him died on Tuesday and others are still in isolation .Yesterday, the minister of Health said he (Mr Sawyer) was aware he had the virus before embarking on his journey to Nigeria and some have claimed it was 'an intentional act of biological warfare'. Somehow he just happened to wander into one of the most populated and congested state in Nigeria with the Ebola virus.. definitely intentional. A new and extensive report by Front Page Africa chronicles his last hours in Lagos. Read below"Barely 24 hours before his death, Patrick Sawyer had a rather strange - and in the words of medical and diplomatic sources here, “Indiscipline” encounter with nurses and health workers at First Consultants Hospital in Obalende, one of the most crowded parts of Lagos, a population of some 21 million inhabitants.Looking to get to the bottom of Sawyer’s strange ailment on the Asky Airline flight, which Sawyer transferred on in Togo, hospital officials say, he was tested for both malaria and HIV AIDS.However, when both tests came back negative, he was then asked whether he had made contact with any person with the Ebola Virus, to which Sawyer denied. Sawyer’s sister, Princess had died of the deadly virus on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia. On Friday, July 25, 2014, 18 days later, Sawyer died in Lagos."Upon being told he had Ebola, Mr. Sawyer went into a rage, denying and objecting to the opinion of the medical experts“He was so adamant and difficult that he took the tubes from his body and took off his pants and urinated on the health workers, forcing them to flee."The hospital would later report that it resisted immense pressure to let out Sawyer from its hospital against the insistence from some higher-ups andconference organizers that he had a key role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. In fact, FrontPageAfrica has been informed that officials in Monrovia were innegotiations with ECOWAS to have Sawyer flown back to Liberia.A text message in possession of FrontPageAfrica from the ECOWAS Ambassador in Liberia, responding to a senior GoL official reads: Your Excellency, the disease control department of the Federal Ministry of Health just contacted me through the hospital now, insisting that Mr. Sawyer be evacuated for now. Pls advise urgently.”In the aftermath of Sawyer’s death, diplomatic, ECOWAS and medical authorities here are baffled over Sawyer’s deception, especially armed with new information that his sister, Princess had died of the deadly virus and his denial. Finance Ministry sources in Monrovia are in quiet murmur over what they feel was a letdown by Sawyer for not being forthcoming with his peers he worked with. The ministry has since been temporarily shut down and those who came in contact with Sawyer are on a 21-day forced incubation monitoring process."All senior officials coming in direct or indirect contact with Mr. Sawyer has been placed on the prescribed 21 days of observatory surveillance," the ministry said in a statement this week.FrontPageAfrica has now learnt that Sawyer exhibited similar indiscipline behavior during his sister’s stay at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia where she was taken because he noticed she was bleeding profusely and was later found to be a victim of Ebola.Sawyer was seen with blood on his clothing after his sister’s death and had earlier demanded that she be placed in a private room.President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf cited indiscipline and disrespect as a key reason why Sawyer contracted the Ebola virus. She said his failure to heed medical advice put the lives of other residents across the nation’s border at risk.

HealthExperts Say Transmission Of Ebola Virus By Air Possible by oshokay(op): 9:20am On Aug 06, 2014
THE Ebola Virus is essentially transmitted from human-to-human through direct contact with infected patients, or through contact with body fluids of a victim. However, scientists are not ruling out the possibility of transmission by air through aerosolised particles.

Previously, Canadian scientists have shown that the deadliest form of the Ebola virus (the Zaire Ebola) could be transmitted by air between species. Although no human over-ther-air transmission of the lethal viral disorder has been recorded, but the Patrick Sawyer incidence in Lagos, Nigeria, has reopened worries over the implications of the possibility of its transmission in an enclosed environment such as an aircraft cabin.

Transmissible from pigs to monkeys by air Studies show that the Ebola virus is transmissible to monkeys from infected pigs without them coming into direct contact. The Ebola virus survives for days outside infected hosts and can “ride” on aerosolised droplets to spread to potential victims.

In a demonstration of the infectious dose of the Ebola virus, the Public Health Agency of Canada says 1 – 10 aerosolised organisms are sufficient to cause infection in humans.

In demonstrating the transmission from pigs to monkeys without any direct contact between them, the scientists housed the pigs carrying the virus in pens with the monkeys in close proximity but separated by a wire barrier. After eight days, some of the macaques (monkeys) were showing clinical signs typical of ebola and were euthanised.

According to the Canadian Public Health Agency: “The virus can survive in liquid or dried material for a number of days. Infectivity is found to be stable at room temperature or at 4 degrees celsius for several days, and indefinitely stable at -70 degrees celsius . Infectivity can be preserved by lyophilisation.

Hence, it is implied that Ebola viruses can survive for several days on common objects such as door knobs or household surfaces. If an infected Ebola victim runs around touching such common objects after cleaning blood or mucous from his nose, another innocent victim can easily infect himself by touching the same objects and then eating some food that places the virus in his mouth.

Level 4 biohazard
Ebola, considered a level-4 biohazard, is very infectious, requiring special protective biohazard suits, containment Level 4 facilities, equipment, and operational practices for work involving infectious or potentially infectious materials, animals, and cultures. To date, according to the World Health Organisation, the Ebola virus has caused 1,323 cases of the disease and 729 deaths–a mortality rate of 55%
