Emmyk: 1. You can use Experian still. You don't have to pay the monthly subscription fee. The subscription only shows you tips you won't see on the free version.
2. I'm not totally sure on this.
3. False. I check my scores as often as I want without any impact.
4. Credditladder. Sign up. Then connect your bank account. Select the particular payment reference you use when sending money to your landlord. Since it's a monthly trend, Credditladder will be notified the moment you pay for every other month. Just make sure you stick to sending your house rent on same day, each month. Thank u. pls I have register to vote and it was successful. my council brought the form I filled it and later they send a letter that it was successful and by September it will be register. but I checked my credit karma it has not yet been updated on it. it keep telling me to register. pls how can I update it on my record that I have register 2. I only use one credit card which is enough for me. is it advisable to use many credit cards or just stick to one?? Thank you |

Wakabouter: Updates after moving to the UK.
The Japa journey is beyond crossing the Mediterranean Sea and landing in the UK. The end goal is to get all the benefits of the land and ultimately get a permanent stay. Throughout the whole process don't undermine the importance of building your credit score. Higher scores will help you get better insurance rates, mortgages, etc.
If you are new to the UK, you won’t have a credit score. Unfortunately, it won’t make any difference if you had a wonderful financial record back in Nigeria because in the UK you are starting from scratch. The good news is you can do a lot of things that can help you build a great credit score.
There are two important things you need to understand: getting a credit card and Improving your credit score.
Getting a credit card. Before you can get a credit card, you should have a verifiable name. This means getting your name and records into the system. Here are a few tips for that. i. Get on the electoral register. This is basically registering to vote, and it makes it easy to link an address to your name. Visit https://www.gov.uk/electoral-register ii. Get a cheap Sim-Only contract like O2, Virgin, EE, etc. rather than PAYG like Lebara or Lyca. iii. Apply for a provisional driver's licence (if you have spent 6 months in the UK). iv. Get your name on a utility bill: gas, electricity, internet... All these are very easy ways of getting your name and record in the system. You can use easy credit card providers like Capital One: A quick check will be run to see if you are eligible. https://quickcheck.capitalone.co.uk Amex: The check is less stressful and usually quicker, bonus points are also awarded which can be redeemed later. https://americanexpress.com/en-gb/referral/oLUWAAjezk?XL=MIMNS Store cards. Stores like Tesco, Argos, etc. issue credit cards for customers with no history.
Improving credit score Using a real-life scenario, my score goes up every time and here is the summary of the reasons as stated on my record.
What's affected your score this month? i. Your score has gone up because you've been on the electoral register at your current address for a longer time. ii. Your score has gone up because you now have active revolving credit accounts, such as credit cards. iii. Your score has gone up because you're using a reasonable amount of your available credit.
**You can also improve your record by manually reporting your rent using services like creditladder.
Some banks like Lloyds will show you what your credit score is on the app. Thank u for this beautiful write up my questions 1. which credit company do u advice we use. I am using Credit karma which is free. but many lenders are using the experian to check your credit . I opened experian and it was told that 30days is free and every month we pay £14. so what do u advice in on the best credit company to use. 2. I was also told that opening too many bank accounts is not good for credit score. How true is this. 3. I also learnt that is not good to be checking your credit all the time, is this true or false 4. How can I add my house rent to my credit. I always tranfer the money to my landlord account but I write on the ref as rent payment. Thank you |

Solumtoya: Again, you're overcomplicating this whole thing. You obviously got a card with an Annual fee. If you think £25 is too much every year, which it isn't, then pull out and opt for the right card. Whether you will pay off the £25 first or not is left for the CC provider to decide. However, since you have spent £25 through the fee, ensure you pay the 10% minimum due of £2.5 or whatever it will when the time comes, better still pay off the full balance of £25 or whatever you would have spent by then.
I say £25 is not much because this is the Cashback Card where you get 5% back of your expenses! Meaning you spend £2,000 and the card gives you back £100. You even get £30 each time you refer a friend. If you ask me, it's a good deal for just £25 yearly.
For those who want the AMEX card that has NO FIXED fees, you can use my referral link below. You don't get Cashback but you get points for British Airways flights and Holiday bookings:

Solumtoya: So Credit Cards (CCs) are one of the best Credit Tools you can have but yes, like every good thing, it does have its dangers.
Most folks here are trying to build Credit Score and to be very honest, CCs are the easiest way to do so. There are so many other ways, of course, and you should do them: Registering in the Electoral Register, Setting up Direct Debits for Utility Bills, Phone/SIM Contracts, etc but from experience since these are not Credit facilities, they may not boost your score as much as a CC.
The rules of CC usage are simple: ensure you pay at least the minimum balance (usually 10% of your usage as at the statement date). So if your cycle is 1st to 30th of every month, on the 30th, you get a statement saying you have used £2,000 and you are given a grace period (typically extra 14 to 23 days) to pay back 10% or more, and whatever balance is unpaid, interest will be charged to the card after the grace period. During this grace period, the next cycle has obviously started running. And the next month balance will sum of what you spent in the month, plus the unpaid balance from the previous month and the interest added. IF YOU DON'T PAY THIS MINIMUM, YOU HAVE DEFAULTED.
Now, the main reasons why CCs are a brilliant facility are evident: 1. Their Interest-free periods means you can use them without ever paying interests: to do this, you must pay everything in full as the interest only starts counting on the unpaid balance after the grace period. An exception is usually Cash Withdrawals, Interest on Cash Withdrawals start counting immediately. Another evil trick of Cash Withdrawal is usually that their interest is higher. There's another evil of Cash Withdrawals but it might be a little technical to explain in this post. Just avoid Cash Withdrawals if you don't want interest 2. CCs are revolving, meaning they are like Overdrafts, not Term Loans, so if I have a limit of £6k, when I spend it and repay, my full limit is re-instated, so I don’t need to re-apply (ever) unless I void the contract. 3. Rewards: Most CCs earn you Miles, Points, etc for usage and referrals. 4. Fees: Many CCs come with little or no extra fees to the Cardholder. I could go on and on.
So, pretty much, you can use your Debit Card for only Cash Withdrawal and use Cash for non-Card payments, while you use your CC for everything else and pay little or no interest while building your credit score.
Now, as beautiful as it sounds, in my 7 years as a Credit Card Product Manager, I have seen so many people wallow in heavy credit card debts. The truth is most humans are not just disciplined enough to handle such an allowance of funds. They deep their hands into it at the slightest opportunity and end up living above their means. CCs are very addictive so don't get a CC if you love to spend, the CC provider would love you and keep increasing your limit and you may land in a gloomy state: you earn just £2k monthly and are given a £6k CC, as you spend and spend, they keep increasing the limit and before you know it, you have a £20k CC fully spent on that Funeral you sponsored in Oshogbo and that trip to Turkey. How will you pay You break the card and start paying back £600 monthly, but that covers only the interest and the amount is NOT reducing every month. You realize you are stuck and have fallen for our trap and that is how we make our interest income and cover for those who are using the card wisely.
I'm sorry this post was really long, I even had to cut this short because I could go on and on about the benefits of CC (purchase protection, chargeback, acceptance, etc), the financially wise know this and hardly ever use Debit Cards but enjoy the benefits of a CC. The financially foolish use CCs to have fun for a few years or months and spend the rest of their lives as slaves to it. The choice is yours! Good evening, many thanks for this explanation. pls i need advice from you on credit card especially on American express CC. I recently opened one and credit of £1000 was given to me, i was planning to start using it. i just received a mail for overdue payment, i was surprised because i have not used it at all. I was told to make payment of.£25 and £975 left as remaining balance. i called them they said i did the one of annual payment, i need to be paying £25 yearly, i told them i never knew, but the lady said that she can switch me to the one that does not pay annual. please i am confused bc she gave me benefit of the both accounts but honestly i don't understand any terms she used, she said £10,000 will give me 1.2% honestly i don't understand. i am been careful not to fall for late payment. kindly advice me on the best one to use for my level, i am just trying to build up my credit. i can't be paying £25 every year. kindly advice bc it is urgent let me rectify this problem. kindly find attached pic . Many thanks for your response

TheGuyFromHR: I assume you need an operation of some kind. I'm also sort of looking into this as well as my mother might need a knee replacement and I'm looking at accessible and affordable options in eastern Europe.
We had this discussion the other day in the office. I had some dental work done for which the rip-off private dentist charged me almost 2k. My coworkers were all shocked, telling me that lots of people go to eastern Europe (Budapest, Prague, Lithuania) or Turkey for serious dental work given the cost differentials. (A colleague of mine has just come back from Turkey, said she spent 2k in total on what she was being charged 9k+ for in the UK). The discussion moved on to medical issues, and how the long NHS waiting lists and huge UK private costs are making people have to go to eastern Europe for necessary operations.
I don't know about Romania, but the main destinations mentioned were again Lithuania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Greece. Some people say you can also get relatively cheap care in Portugal as well.
Points to note:
1. From what I have gathered so far from my research online and from word of mouth, some of the reputable hospitals you could contact have UK reps, and some offer a whole facilitation package for getting you there, accommodation, etc.
2. Depending on the operation, you should note that you usually have to go back to them for follow-up/checkup/disaster management if anything goes wrong, so factor that in. UK providers might not want to do that for you except in an emergency and you have to turn up at the ED.
3. When reading reviews online, remember that there are just as many bad reviews for UK private providers. Operations go well and go badly everywhere in the world. Nothing is foolproof. When researching, I came across an article in the Times about NHS waiting lists and how people are going to Europe to get things sorted, and after reading the extensive comments on the article, where people tell of their experiences, I was amazed to find out that people are going as far as Thailand for dental work, and they were generally bashing UK dentists for being just as ordinary as everywhere else and 5 times as expensive.
4. Getting visas is another hurdle to scale - the east Europeans generally have lousy visa processes, based on some form of official racism. Romania's is a case in point, even though it's recently moved some of the process online. Far better to get a multiple entry Schengen visa from a western European country and use that. Easier for the Brits who of course can just get up and go. Turkey has the easiest visa process, its fully online.
Best of luck as you search. many thanks for this . i appreciate. Thank you |
