New Delhi - A southern Indian city was shut down by protests on Wednesday after police killed 20 suspected sandalwood smugglers in the forests of Andhra Pradesh state. While police have said they fired on men who were attacking them “with axes and other sharp-edged weapons” last week, at least two witnesses have told the National Human Rights Commission that the men were pulled off a bus and shot while in custody. A week of protests has followed the killings. parties called a protest on Wednesday that shut down the city of Pondicherry. Most shops were shut and private buses stayed off the roads as police patrolled the streets. No violence was reported. The rights commission has asked the local government to start an inquiry into the killings. Most of the men killed in the April 7 encounter were from Tamil Nadu state, which shares a boundary with Andhra Pradesh. Police officials have said they were searching for 200 smugglers believed to have been cutting down trees overnight near the Hindu pilgrimage town of Tirupati. In the past smugglers have attacked and even killed security troops. The Anti-Smuggling Task Force, which was responsible for the shooting, was created in 2013 after loggers killed two forest officials. The smuggling of red sandalwood is rampant in southern India, with one ton going for up to $80 000 on the black market due to high demand in countries such as China and Japan where its rich red wood used to make furniture, sculpture and toys. The rare tree grows in only a few districts in Andhra Pradesh and the government restricts its export. The limited supply has led to a thriving black market for the prized lumber. AP |
Kigali – At least 6 000 Burundian refugees have fled into Rwanda over the past month, Rwandan officials said, fearing violence in the build up to Burundi's presidential election. A dispute over whether President Pierre Nkurunziza can run for a third term - he has not yet announced any such plan - has triggered the worst political crisis since the 12-year civil war in the east African nation ended in 2005. Burundian refugees started crossing the border into Rwanda in mid-March but numbers have swelled in recent days, data from Rwanda's ministry of refugee affairs showed. At least 1 069 refugees arrived on Tuesday, taking the total to 5 954. Diplomats, activists and regional leaders have warned that tensions before the presidential poll could lead to unrest. Activists say Imbonerakure, the youth wing of Burundi's ruling party, often harass and even kill opposition members. The group has denied using violence and accused the opposition of trying to discredit it. Protest Opposition parties and dissenting members within the ruling CNDD-FDD party say Nkurunziza running for a third term would violate a 2000 deal that ended the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups. Nkurunziza, in power since 2005, has not yet stated that he will run. Opposition groups and some dissenting CNDD-FDD party members said they planned to protest in the capital Bujumbura on Wednesday. "US citizens should avoid these protests," the US state department said on Tuesday, although it added that recent protests in Bujumbura have been largely peaceful. Refugees at Rwanda's eastern Bugesera district, where most are housed in two transit centres, told Reuters last week that they fled fearing attacks from Imbonerakure. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame has raised the issue of refugees and the risk of violence when he met with Nkurunziza on Monday, the Rwandan presidency said in a statement. Reuters |
lalasticlala:There are many threads with fake stories including graphic image and videos that are fake all over the forum, I've been seeing these posted since last week. There images/videos are all over twitter, Facebook and many blogs. |
dammytosh:That's why I hope the mods will put the thread on FP, to prevent possible revenge attacks that might happen through whatever medium. Since March, 5 people have been killed 2 foreigners (congoles and Ethiopian/ Somali) and 3 south africans (shot by security while looting shops). I want someone to dispute these figures and tell me if any Nigerians have been physically harmed or killed. seun , lalasticlala |
The other one you might have seen is a videos claiming to show Nigerian students or youths being burnt by a xenophobic mob, there's other versions of this video claiming they're Zimbabwean, malawi or Congolese youths, these are all fake, some have been removed by YouTube, but you might have seen them. This is an old video showing youths being tortured by burning, by a vigilante mob after confessing to killing a man, all of them are south African. Ofcos this does not excuse the barbarity, but don't believe everything you see on the net. viral video shows vigilantism not xenophobia http://m.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/Viral-video-shows-vigilantism-not-xenophobia-police-20150411 seun, lalasticlala. this deserves fp, will all the fake stories, images and videos on the forum |
ozoigbondu:If just one Nigerian was killed I'm sure I would've known by now, let alone 10. The images and videos are also fake, so I'm pretty sure. |
Delible:Well, I've been seeing the article pop up on many threads and blogs since Friday, yet nothing on the media, if 10 Nigerians, 10 Congolese, 5 Gabonese and others were Killed I would have seen something on the media or heard from the people I know living Jo'burg. the articles claims the attacks took place in Jo'burg but the current events are in Durban, nothing confirmed in Jo'burg. |
I've been seeing lots of threads over several days claiming many Nigerians were killed during xenophobic attacks in south africa, with graphic images included. I'm a Nigerian who's been staying in south africa for the last six years so I've been following the current events closely. So far 2 foreigners including 3 south africans have died over the past week during looting of shops, and no Nigerian have been confirmed dead. and you might have seen images claiming to show Nigerians being burned or attacked with cutlass those are fake. the first image, is violent strike that took place last year not related to xenophobia. strikes turns violent http://randburgsun.co.za/236653/strikes-turns-violent/ the other one is from a movie about xenophobia. the man burning happened during the 2008 violence. the man with deep is an attack that took place in Nigeria, nothing to do with South Africa the other ones are not even south African or xenophobic related. |
the first image, is violent strike that took place last year not related to xenophobia. strikes turns violent http://randburgsun.co.za/236653/strikes-turns-violent/ the other one is a movie about xenophobia. the man burning happened during the 2008 violence. the other ones are not even south African or xenophobic related. Pls stop spreading false info.. no Nigerian was killed or injured, 2 foreigners including 2 south Africans died during looting of shops. |
Honestly, what's the point of putting this on the fp, one person injured means violence in ebonyi state? And we'll cry when foreign media spreads these type of stories about us, |
MduSA, you again, smh. Those pictures are fake, you can check on google reverse image search, to see their origin and date. No Nigerian has been confirmed dead, 2 foreigners including 3 south Africans have been confirmed dead over the past week. MODS please delete this thread and post authentic info on the events, |
Not true, no Nigerian has died, I'm studying in SA, this story has been making the round since last week. Stop spreading false info, its not helping matters. Only two foreigners were confirmed dead, including 3 south Africans during looting of shops. |
THOSE PICTURES ARE OLD, NOT EVEN FOREIGNERS. DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR THEM. |
Geneva - The United Nations refugee agency urged Kenya on Tuesday to reconsider an order to close the teeming Dadaab refugee camp, warning that sending Somali refugees back to their homeland would have "extreme humanitarian and practical consequences". Kenya said on Saturday it had given the United Nations three months to remove the camp housing hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees, as part of a get-tough response to the killing of 148 people by Somali gunmen at a Kenyan university. The UNHCR said it was ready to work with Kenyan authorities to "strengthen law enforcement" at Dadaab to help protect refugees and Kenyans against possible intrusion by armed groups. "We are thus urging the Kenyan authorities to give the matter further consideration," it said. Reuters |
Rome - About 400 migrants died in an attempt to reach Italy from Libya when their boat capsized, survivors said on Tuesday, the latest tragedy in the Mediterranean where the death toll from shipwrecks has surged this year. The boat, carrying about 550 migrants in total, flipped about 24 hours after leaving the Libyan coast, according to some of the 150 survivors who were rescued and brought to a southern Italian port on Tuesday morning, Save the Children reported. Before this incident there had already been more than 500 deaths of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Africa this year, up sharply from 47 in the same period of 2014, said the Geneva based International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The survivors of the latest shipwreck were mostly sub-Saharan Africans, but no further details were available, a Save the Children spokesperson told Reuters. It was not clear exactly when the boat had capsized. The number of boats carrying migrants aiming to reach the EU from Africa has picked up in recent weeks as fine spring weather makes the passage safer. In February, more than 300 drowned when attempting the crossing in cold weather and rough seas. Save the Children, the IOM and other humanitarian organisations have called for the European Union to bolster its sea rescue operations before the migrant flows soar as they usually do in the summer months. On Monday, 2 851 migrants were saved in rescue operations in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard said, adding to at least nine who died and 5 629 who were saved over the weekend. Italy, which handled the largest number of migrant arrivals in the EU, has become increasingly alarmed about the breakdown of law and order in Libya, which has greatly exacerbated the task of tackling the migrant flows. Libya is home to two rival governments, loosely aligned militia forces and a growing militant Islamist movement. Separately, the EU border control agency Frontex said on Tuesday that migrant traffickers had fired shots to prevent their wooden boat being confiscated after rescuers saved the 250 people it was carrying off the coast of Libya. After the migrants had been transferred, a speedboat approached and its crew fired several shots into the air before the assailants sped away with the empty migrant boat, Frontex said. Frontex said the episode marked the second time this year that armed smugglers had taken back a vessel used to transport migrants following a rescue in the central Mediterranean. Reuters |

At least five people have been killed and hundreds of forced to flee their homes in one of South Africa’s worst outbreaks of xenophobic violence in years, authorities said on Tuesday. Most of the recent unrest occurred in and around the coastal city of Durban, where police said two foreigners and three South Africans were killed. The dead included a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly shot during looting on Monday night and died at a hospital, police colonel Jay Naicker said. Some 34 people have been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and other crimes in the last two days, he said. “Police are deployed and in high alert in most of the areas where there are foreign nationals,” Naicker said in a statement emailed to the Associated Press. Despite the increased police presence, authorities are hard-pressed to stop unrest that recalls similar violence in South Africa in 2008 in which about 60 people died. In January this year, four people died during a week of looting of foreign-owned shops and other violence in Soweto and other areas of Johannesburg. Some South Africans have accused immigrants of taking jobs and opportunities away from them. The latest violence followed reported comments by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, an influential figure among the Zulu ethnic group, that foreigners should “pack their bags” and leave. The king has since appealed for an end to the unrest. The southern African nation of Malawi plans to repatriate at least 400 of its citizens following the attacks in South Africa, said Kondwani Nankhumwa, Malawi’s information minister. Malawi is currently in discussions with South Africato arrange temporary travel papers for stranded Malawians because most lost their passports in the chaos, Nankhumwa said. “Most of them fled with literally nothing to safe camps,” the minister said. “The numbers will swell since some Malawians are in hiding.” South Africa president Jacob Zuma condemned the violence and assigned several Cabinet ministers to work on the problem with officials in KwaZulu-Natal province, which includes Durban. The government is addressing South African citizens’ “complaints about illegal and undocumented migrants, the takeover of local shops and other businesses by foreign nationals as well as perceptions that foreign nationals perpetrate crime,” Zuma’s office said in a statement. It quoted the president as saying that many foreign nationals are living legally in South Africa and are contributing to economic development. On a visit to South Africa last week, Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe thanked South Africa for hosting many Zimbabweans and said Zimbabwe would work with South Africa to improve border security. It is estimated that as many as 3 million Zimbabweans are living in South Africa, many as illegal immigrants. The violence against immigrants is “an expression of a terrible failure of memory by South Africans” who endured racial intolerance under apartheid, two South African foundations said. The foundations are named after anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013, and Ahmed Kathrada, another campaigner against the white racist rule that ended in 1994. In a statement, the foundations welcomed efforts by Zuma and other senior leaders to stop the unrest, but said: “For too long, South Africans in leadership positions have either ignored the crisis or stoked the fires of hatred.” http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/14/south-africa-xenophobic-violence-outbreak |
London - British fighter jets were scrambled on Wednesday in response to the sighting of two Russian military aircraft near UK airspace, hours after three Russian ships were monitored as they entered the English Channel. "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft were launched today after Russian aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace," said a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson. The planes were launched from the Lossiemouth military airbase in northern Scotland. Britain's Royal Navy earlier kept track of three Russian ships, including a destroyer, after they entered the English Channel, according to the defence ministry. It is the latest in a string of similar incidents and comes at a time of tense relations between London and Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine and the inquiry into the death of Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko. "MoD can confirm 3 Russian ships being monitored by @RoyalNavy HMS Argyll through Channel. No exercises seen," the ministry said on its Twitter feed. "Russian Udaloy class destroyer Severomorsk returning from Mediterranean with tanker and support ship. Due to leave Channel later." Russia's defence ministry said the ships were en route to the North Atlantic, where they would be taking part in exercises "on anti-air and anti-submarine defence". The Channel is used frequently and legitimately as a route by Russian warships but Nato countries are on alert over fears that Moscow could attempt to destabilise countries on Europe's eastern flank that were in its orbit during Soviet times. Power display James Nixey, head of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at think-tank Chatham House, said Russia's actions around the UK were designed to send a message. "Russia is trying to show it has got full spectrum capability warfare," he said. "It is not a prelude to war but it is a reminder that Russia likes to remind us of - that it is a power to be reckoned with, not a fading power, which might be closer to the reality. The Severomorsk, an anti-submarine destroyer, was among four ships which passed through the Channel in November. A Russian warship was also tracked through the Channel in February while the previous month, Britain summoned the Russian ambassador after Tupolev Tu-95 bombers, known as Russian "bears", were found flying close to British airspace. According to a report in The Daily Telegraph newspaper, Britain was forced to accept a four-day visit by Russian military inspectors to view UK-led naval war games off the coast of Scotland. The exercises, which began on Monday, are taking place under the terms of a European arms control treaty.AFP |

Naija is going nuclear Michael Eboh Nigeria has signed an agreement with a Russian firm, Rosatom, to build four nuclear power plants in the country valued at $80 billion, about N16 trillion. The power plants which will have a combined capacity of 4,800 megawatts, are expected to come on stream between 2025 and 2035. Speaking at a forum in Kenya Tuesday, Mr. Franklin Erepamo Osaisai, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, said the building of the nuclear plants would be financed by Rosatom, which will then build, own, operate and transfer the plants to the government and people of Nigeria after a number of years. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/nigeria-russian-firm-stake-n16trn-to-build-four-nuclear-plants/[/quote] |
