By Mustafa Yahaya I marvel at the way and manner we think in this country, worst of it the way we think in the north. It is just a few months ago that we all continually lambasted president Jonathan's cluelessness, I referred to him as the "drunken master of Otuoke", and nobody harassed me, and now because they fear the power of the media that brought them to power they want to castrate the social media, with Buhari firing the first shot in an interview with Sahara reporters' Adeola in New York, why, is it because it is Buhari? We demonstrated against pump price increment for petrol, government of president Buhari wants us to swallow the same pill we rejected a few months ago, yet some of my northern compatriots see nothing wrong with that, is it because it is Buhari? When three sons of Sheik Zakzaky were murdered during the Jonathan administration, El-Rufa'i called it genocide by the jonathanian army, now under Buhari more than 200 are killed, their mosque and houses destroyed under Elrufai's nose as Governor of the same state, he has not called it genocide by the Buharian army, is it because it is Buhari? Under the Jonathan administration subsidy payments were termed as fraud, and there were hues and cries to crucify oil marketers, Buhari even called it a fraud himself, we also thought so, Six months later the same Buhari is paying for subsidy yet nobody is calling it a fraud, why, is it because it is Buhari? We criticized Jonathan for keeping a large fleet in the presidential fleet and wasting monies on maintenance, only recently President Buhari's spokesman admitted 2 billion Naira was spent on their maintenance, when other presidents are even doing away with their jets, yet we sit down and watch helplessly, is it because it Buhari? Fuel scarcity is biting harder, value of the Naira is going rock bottom, inflation is now on auto pilot, while profits are dropping, purchasing powers are becoming weaker, yet we are asked not to query them, is it because it is Buhari? If we criticized Jonathan for cluelessness, we will also criticize Buhari for helplessness. While tribal and regional jingoist see nothing because it is Buhari, what I see first is Nigeria and not whether Jonathan is a southerner or Buhari is a Northerner, We Cannot continue to be trapped in the closet of tribalism, regionalism and religious bigotry yet expect our country to remain one and grow. Yes! we might be of different orientation and background but what is good is good anywhere any time and what is bad is bad, I cannot be suffering and keep smiling because "my brother" is the president. President Muhammadu Buhari’s Vacation Presidents need many vacations for their jobs are very tough. If you knew how two young men Mr. Clinton and Mr. Obama aged in four years and then four more years you will see how challenging the job can be. A 73-year old Buhari will need to catch his breath much more often than Clinton and Obama. Both had 2 months’ vacation in every year of their services. One in summer (usually in Massachusetts Martha’s Vineyard) and winter in Hawaii. Nobody should begrudge PMB of his well-earned vacation. But why would a Nigerian president not spend his vacation in Nigeria? Why must he spend it abroad? This is where we show that we do not like what we have at home and do nothing to make what is abroad available to us in Nigeria. When we get sick we go abroad, we want education for our kids we go abroad and we get a vacation time we go abroad. This is a shame. A country that is foreign exchange starved cannot afford to have her president and his entourage spend their vacation times and foreign exchange abroad. I had thought that PMB was opposed to foreign junkets while a candidate but he seems to have become his own foreign secretary and now spends his vacation abroad. SS has very many wonderful resorts in Obudu Cattle ranch, and Calabar is a very holiday friendly place. Enugu has Nike Lake resort and there is the old Jankara Game Reserve. Or why did the president not go back to his village in Katsina and play checkers/draft with his old buddies? These would make him live as Nigerians live and make him feel like ordinary Nigerians. I have lived in USA for a little while. Over these years I am yet to read of a foreign head of state spending his vacation in US. Why do we snub our things, always searching for things abroad? Would other Nigerian who want to enjoy their vacations abroad get the foreign exchange to do so or is PMB above the law? God save Nigeria Benjamin Obiajulu Aduba Boston, Massachusetts February 9, 2016 |

This is blackmail. APC blackmailing the Judiciary! This is hypocrisy of the highest order. APC's ACN rose by bribing Salami of appeal court, is now accusing same judiciary it worked so hard to compromise. Gosh! Pls someone tell the APC goons that this one is DOA- Dead on Arrival. With its waning popularity for its endless propaganda and blame-game amidst obvious inability to forge a coherent policy direction for the nation, this might well be it's coffin nail. |

ademega:Sir, you are. Very wrong. Our youths have proven to be very lazy. Just do a simple google search before you start running your mouth. What do you mean by the boldened when when the commencement and final set deadline for BVN implementation were all in Gej era? BVN: The banking public and the June deadline ON MAY 18, 20151:40 AMIN BUSINESS, NEWSCOMMENTS By Babajide Komolafe Bank customers across the country have thirty three days from today to enrol for the Bank Verification Number (BVN)However there are issues concerning how many customers would have enrolled for the exercise by the deadline, even as stakeholders in the banking industry have stepped up efforts to highlight the benefits of the initiative for the country as a whole. The BVN was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria and was launched February 14th last year. It is the registration of customers in the financial system using biometric technology. Biometric technology involves the process of recording a person’s unique physical traits such as fingerprints and facial features. This record can then be used to correctly identify the person afterwards. Once a person’s biometrics has been properly captured, the person is given a Bank Verification Number or BVN. According to the CBN, The objective of the BVN initiative is to protect bank customers, reduce fraud and further strengthen the Nigerian banking system. Fraud is reduced because no two people have the same biometric information. Banks will therefore be able to check the features of a person doing a transaction against the record, which the bank has captured thereby correctly identifying the owner of an account. Enrolment To enroll for the BVN, bank customers have to visit a branch of their bank, complete and submit the BVN enrolment form, after which, the biometric information such as fingerprints and facial imagery are recorded. The customer is then issued an acknowledgment slip with transaction ID. Thereafter, BVN is created and the customer is alerted via SMS to arrange for pick-up. Fast-Track Measures In order to fast-track enrolment of customers for the BVN, the CBN October last year, stipulated targets and deadline for banks. The apex bank also made the BVN a condition for accessing loan. The CBN stated in circular, “In order to fast-track the enrolment process: DMBs are expected to give attention to enrolment of their customers; All DMBs are required to enrol at least, 40 percent of their customers on or before 31st December 2014, and 70 percent on or before 30th March 2015; All DMBs are required to fully integrate their core banking system, latest by 31st October 2014, to ease the enrolment process; All new loans must have the BVN as condition precedent to drawdown, with effect from 3rd November 2014; All credit customers must have BVNs by 31st December 2014; The Central Bank of Nigeria will monitor compliance”. PRESS STATEMENT PDP is Too Corrupt and Too Sick to Lead the Opposition SKC Ogbonnia Houston, Texas January 20, 2016 It is a common knowledge that any government without credible opposition is open to dictatorship and abuse of power. Recently, there was an array of hope for Nigeria. For all intents and purposes, Nigerians had witnessed a formidable opposition activity by the time for the 2015 elections. But that is no longer the case. The current main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDP), has turned out to be too corrupt and too sick to play a leading role. So far, President Muhammadu Buhari is doing a commendable job grabbing the corrupt PDP henchmen one after the other. Yet, the attitude of the culprits once they are granted bail is not funny at all. Instead of standing firm to defend themselves and the cause of the opposition, these PDP leaders are usually befallen with one form of acute sickness or another. To rub in the ploy, the sick looters typically opt for treatment abroad while the masses are saddled with poor medical facilities at home. Interestingly, the ardent supporters of the former ruling party still see hope. They believe the party will soon usher in some credible leaders in the crucible of a party convention, whenever that might be. But don’t hold your breath. Of course, PDP still boasts of fairly untainted figures like Ken Nnamani, Nuhu Ribadu, Donald Duke, Segun Mimiko, Ibrahim Dankwambo, Ibrahim Shekarau, and so on. Alas, the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria is not ready to entrust its future on any novice in the primitive accumulation of wealth. The dilemma, therefore, is that virtually all its anointed leaders with deep pocket—from the north, east, and west—wear loud beads of corruption around their necks. Take a look at the lineup below. Namadi Sambo: In a normal clime, the mild-mannered former Vice President would be the shoe-in to the leadership vacuum. However, he is yet to recover from an overseas medical treatment resulting possibly from the new wave of sickness common with PDP chieftains being fingered for abuse of office. Moreover, Sambo cannot feign ignorance to the monumental corruption that rocked the National Economic Council while he was at the helm. Enter the man of the hour, son of a former Sultan, and the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki who has been in dire need of foreign medical treatment in midst of dizzying criminal charges. Dasuki had exhibited a measure of political shrewdness when he stormed the London Think-Tank Chatham House to make a case for the postponement of Nigeria’s 2015 elections. But it is clear that his was a fall before the rise. The Sokoto prince will forever be remembered for freebooting $2.1 billion defense funds budgeted to save human lives—now referred to as Dasukigate. The case of the recent PDP Chairmen does not exude hope. Haliru Mohammed Bello, for one, has become a permanent fixture in the contemporary discussion of corruption in Nigeria. Currently confined to a hospital bed but indicted in connection to the Dasukigate, Bello is the same character thrust into the position of Defense Minister during the Goodluck era despite being embroiled in the infamous £8.6 billion Siemens bribery scandal. Similarly, though he is been out of the public scene since stepping down after failing to account for N12 billion party funds, Nigerians will never forget how Adamu Mua’zu ascended the top party post in the face of pending allegations for stealing N19.8billion from Bauchi State coffers. Even more, not only is the former governor rumoured sick somewhere, Mua’zu remains an integral quotient in cracking the various Dasukigate equations. Sule Lamido is a well-nurtured party stalwart then widely seen as the heir apparent to 2019 PDP presidential ticket. Sadly, the ex-governor and son are now awaiting trial for plundering Jigawa State treasury. The plight of the past Chairman of Northern Governors Forum, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, is equally sad. Not long ago all roads pointed to Aliyu’s Minna residence, but that was then. Today, the erstwhile “Chief Servant” of Niger State is mired in N2.9 billion fraud charges at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The timbers of the 7th Legislature, particularly former Senate President David Mark, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, and former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha are pondering what could have been. They were well groomed as the picture perfect babyface of the opposition with every resource in tow. However, not surprisingly, the trio has suddenly grown too old and too impotent due to a raging fear of imminent probes into the billions budgeted for Constitutional Review and Constituency Projects from the year 2007 to 2015. Ordinarily, PDP could have explored Senator Godswill Akpabio, the official opposition leader in the Legislature, but the former governor has become dumbstruck out of the blue after an encounter with the EFCC for allegedly carting away N108 billion from Akwa Ibom State treasury. That brings us to Olisa Metuh, a man of cerebral pedigree, then packaged as a fearless patriot in his role as the PDP National Publicity Secretary. Regrettably, the party has just found out the hard way: Promoting Metuh as its official mouthpiece is akin to bursting the Pandora’s Box in a public square. Lo and behold, the credibility of the Nnenwi High Chief is deep down the tubes at the spur of the moment after failing to make sense of how and why a portion of the Dasuki corrupt largesse landed in his individual business bank account. The most brazen is the spectacle of Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State grandstanding as a self-appointed “Leader of Nigeria’s Opposition”. A man of voluble tidings, Fayose is the shameless fugitive ex-governor previously impeached for corruption but drafted back by his party to recapture the seat by any means necessary. Ultimately, he is rattled by the anti-corruption war and has been roaming the political space inciting the public with all manners of innuendo against the ruling party, as if PDP had shared the stolen billions among the poor masses. But Nigerians have become wiser. We are well aware that the commotion is nothing but the wailing of a highbinder awaiting serious time for his involvement in the N1.3 billion poultry scandal plus 2014 Ekiti election fraud. It will be a gross disservice to the reading audience if this exposé is to conclude without a special attention on Femi Fani-Kayode. Quite frankly, at the chagrin of friends, I was overjoyed when the former minister was acquitted of money laundering charges. Though always traducing, Fani-Kayode’s kind of verbal opposition is not totally bad for the polity. At least, his bombastic style has entertainment value—a radio station away from a poor man’s Rush Limbaugh. The issue with this one, though, is that new revelations from the Dasukigate have shown that the constant bravado is not only to blind the gullible masses but also to fan the embers of crises in anticipation of looming indictments over new graft allegations. This whole picture portends a troubling future for Nigeria. Although President Buhari has recorded a measurable success thus far, he is far from sainthood. Like in any human undertaking, excesses abound. Very unfortunately, however one views it; and no matter the line of argument; it is clear that the PDP brand is hopelessly banal—too corrupt, too sick, and too witless to checkmate the party in power. Even if the PDP is to succeed in its dream of a makeover, the ensuing leadership will always be dismissed, and justifiably so, as an appendage to an unrepentant corrupt cabal. The posterity beckons on patriotic minds within the different opposition camps, therefore, to unite towards the path to a true democratic culture. Instead of the maddening rush to the ruling party, it is time to explore a new opposition party that is steadily alert to expose the weakness of the APC central government and credible enough to offer alternative solutions. President Buhari’s Dwindling Stature Six months ago after Nigerian Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the 2015 presidential election with General Muhammadu Buhari as the winner, the world stood still for a moment. Nigerians sang “hail Buhari” and religious people proclaimed GMB as God’s angel that would save Nigeria. His reputation was so high that nobody fathomed what could possibly bring him down to earth. Those who voted for him were sure that God had answered their prayers. Those who voted for his opponent Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had to hide in shame. Six months after the election those who voted for GEJ are happier for their choice than those who voted for GMB now. My unscientific pol of PMB supporters showed a strong decline in enthusiasm for PMB. Even the vocal internet warriors are showing diminished support or outright rejection of PMB. Many have suddenly become either deaf or lost their ability to type; to speak up. PMB defenders are no longer praising him but have resorted to blaming the past government, or blaming Biafran demonstrations; or blaming Tinubu and occasionally blaming APC or Saraki or Speaker of the House. It has gone from promoting the man to casting aspersions on others. What went wrong? 1. His outing to EU and America showed awkward moves in both planning and execution. Told to bring a shopping list to EU G20 meeting, he had none, no list; and no ideas. His handlers did not know or did not understand what he was going to USA and UN to do and what agenda items he should demonstrate mastery. The giant of Africa let Africa down as he spoke to an empty chamber. Part of these mistakes were due to the fact that he did not have a foreign minister. But then again it was his responsibility to have appointed one. Nobody was in charge. 2. PMB’s first appointments excluded large segments of Nigeria as he shamelessly favored his old northern Nigerian pals. His reason that they were people he could trust and that he was looking for incorruptible Nigerians made more people angry as the implication was that the south did not raise trustworthy people. Some of his defenders said that he had just appointed a dozen or so people that he has thousands more appointments to make. But when he made subsequent appointments the basis of selection – not corrupt, and still trustworthy, did not support those criteria. The defenders bowed out. Or fizzled. 3. If PMB’s reputation was falling, that of his party, APC, was falling at a faster rate. It became clear that the party was/is ridden with fractures and back stabbing and had no national objectives and programs. There is no harmony. This weakness made PMB weaker than he could have been and this might account for his other failings. Without a strong backing by his party he has virtually lost control of the legislature which might account to PMB not sending bills to the legislature. 4. Then came the mishandling of Nnamdi Kanu's case. Today’s leading stories on Nigeria is about Biafra not about Nigeria. Reuters, Newsweek, NYT, WSJ, London Times, etc., are now writing more about Biafra than about Nigeria. 5. The weakness of naira has not helped PMB’s stature. People blame this on PMB’s inability to articulate his economic policy. Nothing illustrates the lack of a clear economic policy as vividly as the display at the presentation of the 2016 budget. Observers did not see his economic team standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him. His finance minister was a no-show reviving the accusation that PMB is shy among women especially women with power. Was the finance minister part of this budget preparation or was she a mere “parlor wife.” Is Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s ghost hovering around in Abuja? The budget itself befuddled finance experts as it lacked any details and as defense and police gobbled up N53 billion which equals the total for combined health, transport, agriculture, rural and urban development, education, and water, the basic essentials. Nigeria is not at war unless one counts Biafra. N20 billion for education as an example, in a nation with over 50 universities it means about $2 million each for the year. Nobody could run a grammar school on that. How many miles of road can be macadamized for N4 billion? Even $4 billion? I am aware that the operating budget is not completed yet but the capital budget is where the meat is. 6. A good budget starts with projects: what are we going to do? It is only after this question is firmly decided that sources of funds are debated. Did PMB follow this standard, if so why is the information on capital projects so stingy? 7. There are many other bungling of events such as announcing that executive committee meetings would be bi-weekly and three days later calling for emergency executive meeting to discuss the budget. 8. The minsters have been nominated and confirmed, but are they at work? Where are they? Where is the foreign minister? They seem to be so quiet. Where do we go from here? PMB can still revive his dwindling reputation by working with all Nigerians especially those he had assigned jobs. We want to know what Fashola is going to do in his many ministries. What are Amaechi’s road vision? What is the target year for Nigeria to become an exporter of food as opposed to net importer? I went to an African shop in Boston and nearly every food item had “A product of Ghana” label on it. Where is Nigerian agricultural industries? Would this not be better than trying to make cars with imported raw materials? Will a chocolate factory somewhere in Ekiti state not make more sense that Ajaokuta Steel mill? How about many kinds of juice factories in Benue or Cassava processing factory in Achi/Oji River, Enugu state? I used to love corned beef from Kano, I believe. When will it be built to supply all of Africa and beyond? Teachers in Teacher Training Schools are advised to start from the known to the unknown. IF PMB follows this advice he might be the promised messiah Nigeria is looking for. But if he is more interested in arresting and detaining Nnamdi Kanu his reputation will continue to decline and eventually fizzle out.
