otumfour: GRIDCO To Announce New Load Shedding Schedule

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) is expected to announce a new nationwide load shedding exercise due to a shortfall of 300 megawatt of power supply on the national grid.

The shortfall had occurred due to planned shutdown of a power plant in Takoradi for routine maintenance and a technical problem that had affected gas supply for the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) to the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Sunon Asogli plant.

The Takoradi power plant, before the shutdown, supplied 110 megawatts of power to the national grid while the gas-fired Asogli plant, generated 200 megawatts of power.

Briefing journalists at a conference in Accra on Monday, Mr William Hutton-Mensah, Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, gave the assurance that industries would be given top priority concession during the load shedding exercise, adding that there would be minimum effect on their operations.

He, however, advised the public, especially residents in Accra that would experience power failure every other day during the peak periods, to use energy-efficient appliances to conserve energy.

Mr Maxwell Odoom, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Resources for the VRA said, WAPCO shut down its pipelines following loss of pressure around the Lome segments in Togo due to a damage caused to the pipeline by ship’s anchor.

He added that WAPCO had given the assurance that a team of engineers on a vessel from Gabon were expected to reach the faulty pipeline section and to start repair works by tomorrow September 4, 2012.

Mr Odoom who could not state exactly how long it would take to repair and restore gas supply, added that it was the expectation that the unpleasant situation “would not last forever”.

He said in the absence of gas-fired power plants, machines that used Light Crude Oil (OLC) would be switched into use.

Mr Odoom added that there was enough OLC supply to run the available power plants.

The cost of running the crude oil-powered plants is estimated at 45 million dollars for a month.

Mr Kofi Ellis, Director for Planning and Business Development at VRA, however expressed optimism that the power plant at Takoradi was expected to become functional by tomorrow September 4, 2012 to ease the shortfall from the current 300 megawatts to 200 megawatts.

•Robbers kill three policemen, three others •10 injured •Police gun down two suspects •Govt: no cause for alarm
IT was a bloody Sunday in Lagos yesterday.
Rampaging robbers shot dead three policemen, a bureau de change operator, an Okada (commercial motorcycle) rider and a bus driver.
There were reports of more deaths which The Nation could not confirm.
More than 10 people were believed to have been injured. They include an official of the Lagos State Traffic management Authority (LASTMA).
The bureau de change was attacked in Agege. A large amount of foreign currencies was reportedly carted away by the robbers, who killed one of the operators.
But the Lagos State Government assured residents of adequate security. It described the situation as “unfortunate”, urging residents to be vigilant.
The robbers, said to be eight, including two women, drove round in two SUVs - a Prado and an Armada. They shot the policemen who were inside their patrol vehicle near the Guinness Brewery on Oba Akran, Ikeja. Two of the five policemen inside the patrol van died instantly. The third was taken to the hospital, where he died.
A stray bullet hit a six-year- old girl in the eye. Her grandmother was hit on the forehead. They were watching television in their home at 15, Alfa-Nla Street in Agege on the outskirts of the city.
A stray bullet also hit a parked Volvo ambulance with registration number HL 355 AAA belonging to Motolani Medical Centre. It shattered the rear windscreen.
The robbers were said to have been spotted at about 10.35a.m at Ifako-Gbagada from where they reportedly drove through Oshodi to Mile 2 and Agege.
They shot dead an Okada rider in Ijesha on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
At Agege, the police reportedly engaged the robbers who shot sporadically and headed toward Ogba. On their way, a driver of a commercial bus, (Lagos XQ336 EKY) was shot dead. His vehicle crashed into a ditch at the Railway crossing.
The robbers, who made a detour and were retreating through the Oba Akran Road, met the patrol team and double crossed their van.
The bodies of the policemen were first taken to the Area ‘F’ Police Command, Ikeja before being taken to the mortuary.
When our reporter visited Oba Akran in front of Guinness Plc, about 10 patrol vehicles and an Armoured Personal Carrier (APC) were on the scene. An eyewitness, a commercial motorcycle operator who simply identified himself as Kabiru, told The Nation that he was following the SUV in which the robbers were operating, unknown to him that they were armed robbers, until he saw how they suddenly double crossed the patrol team and started shooting at the policemen.
He said: “It was like a war scene. I saw death with my eyes. They shot dead two policemen. I took cover near the war zone.”
Lagos Police chief Umar Manko, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen were being chased by policemen.
“The police got wind of their operation and were chasing them and, in the process, two officers were killed,” Manko said.
He noted that the hoodlums killed the policemen because the patrol vehicle was met in an Isolated place.
He said he suspected that the bandits had snatched a police communication equipment, with which they monitored police directives.
On the bureau de change killings, the police chief said: “I cannot confirm either the death of the civilians or the robbery at the bureau de change because I do not have that fact, but I’ll contact you once I am put in the know.”
Confirming the attack on of one of its men LASTMA spokesman Richard Omolase said he was informed by zonal head Kester Ademola that the officer was shot at Anthony were the agency has its zonal office.
He gave the name of the affected person as Sosan M, a level four officer. Who is recuperating at the Gbagada General Hospital.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information Lateef Ibirogba described the sporadic shooting by hoodlums as ugly and unfortunate, especially on a Sunday afternoon. He extended regards to the injured.
He said although no society was free of crime, the state government was committed to ensuring that people can go to bed with their eyes closed.”The Lagos State Government will always make sure that there is co-operation between the government and the security agencies to kick crime out of the state. We are putting in our best to get crime and criminals out of Lagos as well as ensure that security agencies live up to their responsibilities.”We will always complement security agencies to make Lagosians and other residents go to bed with their eyes closed,” he said.

PetroDolla: Chei, the warped reasoning of a nigerian! How do you define one country being 'better' than another? For me, I'm glad more Ghanaians have access to drinking water, motorable roads, personal security, education, food than your long-suffering countrymen! nigeria may have a few of the world's richest men, a few nigerians may live in mansions, ride the biggest cars and wear the tallest gele and block highways to celebrate their babies naming ceremonies or their funeral of their in-laws, have exquisite private jets- it's all rubbish in a country where 90% survive on less than $2 a day! By the way, most of the wealth you see being lavished in your accursed country were earned via very dubious means- ritual money, corruption etc. a nigerian will do whatever, and I mean, whatever to make money so he can boast.Hope you are not one of them-even though you sound like one of those ritualists! Well, that may good for you, but we have better values.

For a country suffering from perenial power outages, what's the point in having tall buildings in that country?

Talking about Abuja, how large is Abuja. The whole abuja is not even up to the size of east legon in Accra. So how do you assess the two? and the jury is still out on abuja. Let'd wait for a few more years and see whwther your abuja will remain the same abuja, idiota
Most Ghanaian ladies will do anything to have a Nigerian boyfriend r husband. I myself married a pretty Ghanaian and her friends always tell me to take them to Nigeria and hook them up with 9ja men. I dont know what these girls see in Nigerian men? Probably its bc most Nigerian men in Ghana are richer than their Ghana counterparts, and the ghana dudes lack swag and they are mostly short, dark, and poor.

These short Ghana boys hate Nigerians so much because they say Nigerians control their economy and come all the way from Nigeria to phuckk the few beautiful ghana girls. This is why they come here on Nairaland to run their mouths in anger and jealousy.

Mszel is more or less a whoreee, everyone in Ghana knows how cheap she is. Msbel was supposed to marry a 9ja guy few years ago, the sharp 9ja guy dumped her when he discovered the sluutt is dating/ forking plenty other guys. Rudebwoy: According to what Ghana Celebrities reported, two top Ghanaian celebrities, Yvonne Nelson and Mzbel are at loggerheads with each other over Nigerian rapper, Ice Prince, who may not know that they exist or aware that both ladies are fighting over him after allegedly fathering a child out of wedlock.
It was reported that Mzbel had disclosed to a mutual friend of both celebs about how Yvonne is dying to make Ice Prince notice her and maybe go down low with him. This mutual friend then reportedly told Yvonne about what Mzbel said about Yvonne behind her.

Not happy with the way Mzbel allegedly back-stabbed her, Yvonne was accused of doing what Ruggedman reportedly did to 9ice during their hyped 'fight' by recording her conversation with Mzbel, when she (Mzbel) later reportedly called to apologise for her wrong doing and also explain that the mutual friend had added some spices to exaggerate the real gist to make it look offensive.

The recorded conversation, as reported, was sent out on BlackBerry to some friends by Yvonne, which has reportedly been used as ringtones in Ghana.

It was also reported that Yvonne accused Mzbel of getting jealous of her success and beauty. There have been talks that Yvonne lives with her parents in a rented apartment in Dansoman, Ghana while her over hyped boutique is said to be a cheap 'container shop'.

There are reports that one of the parties has threatened to ruin the career of the other. Will this end here? Maybe when Ice Prince settles the fracas in whatever way he can.

You will recall that not too long ago, there were rumour that Yvonne was in a sizzling romance with 'Kukere' master, Iyanya, which was denied. http://m.naij.com/news/7758.html
They look like who? Nigerian women? Dude it's pretty clear that you dont even know what women from your country look like. I thought you were gonna say they look south african. Why do nigerians assume that other African countries dont know what Nigerian women look like. Dude i can give you a vivid description of what Nigerian women look like based on 20 or so years that your women have graced the screens of Africa through movies and also based on what i have seen here in America and my home country South Africa. Nigerian women usualy have big lips or big mouth, you know the Miss Piggy kind of mouth. Your actresses like Tonto Dike, Rita dominic, One Uche Obodo or watever her name is, all fall under what a typical nigerian woman look like. over here in the USA, Simi, Inije, Amara, Tayo. OMG! you should see these women,Ugly with a mouth like pigs. if your lucky to find a Nigerian women who doesnt have mouth as big as pig, she is either shapeless or have unattractive legs. thats the God damn truth based on my experience. Now if u are lucky to find a Nigerian women who doesnt have the typical miss piggy lips, is not shapeless and doesnt have unattractive legs, she has bleached the heck out of her body. you know the kind of bleaching that hurts your eyes. Now how many of your actresses have their own natural color. From Tonto Dike to Rita Dominic to Omotola, all these actresses have bleached the hell outta their body.i mean almost all ur actresses have bleached their body.Gosh even Mercy Johnson is bleaching her face. Now if ur lucky to find a nigerian woman who doesnt have all these problems mentioned above, she usually look like she is suffering from gigantism; very tall, big and manly looking with a feet as wide as that of Big Foot.Dude go to BellaNaija and see Nigerian women in high heels; very unattractive at all.; bunch of bleached as legs with big feet in high heels. Dude leave these ghanaian Ladies alone. they are simply gorgeous. their mixed raced are beautiful so is their non mixed raced women.infact saying their look like Nigerian women is a big insult to these gorgeous women.
shocked shocked shocked shocked damn!!! murder she wrote
