The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will on Friday hold a National Executive Council meeting to determine the direction of the ongoing national strike, PREMIUM TIMES can report. The meeting will be holdingafter national branches equally held meetings on Wednesday to decide on whether the strike should continue or not. All branch chairmen are expected to be in Abuja on Thursday while the meeting is tentatively expected to end on Saturday after which a decision will be communicated to Nigerians. When contacted on the planned meeting, the ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said he would only speak after the meeting had been held. “We cannot react now but after the NEC meeting we will speak on the developments,” he told PREMIUM TIMES on phone. Several branch chairmen and officials spoken to declined to provide information on the decision of their branches on the strike, saying they had been asked not to speak to journalists. “We held special congresses today. I cannot divulge outcome of the meeting but we held a meeting on the strike action,” Tomi Damson, secretary of Lagos State University branch of ASUU said. The chairman of another branch of the union in a southern university also spoke on the interim report received from the branches. “From the Southern part of the country and some parts of the North, universities voted for continuation of the strike; but we cannot tell now until after the meeting of NEC,” the don said. The union went on strike on August 13 to protest against poor welfare and poor funding of universities, a move that led to the Federal Government inviting the body for negotiations. ASUU then sent the details of the negotiation to its branches for further deliberation. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had expressed hope that the strike would be suspended this week. In a related development, the Ibadan zone of the union has condemned the “continued victimisation of lecturers in University of Ilorin.” The zonal coordinator, Ade Adejumo, who said this in a press statement alleged that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Ganiyu Ambali, was victimising ASUU members in the university, a situation he said could lead to further prolonging the ongoing national strike. Attempts to reach Mr. Ambali proved abortive as he did not answer phone calls or reply messages sent to him. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/241299-ASUU-executives-meet-friday-decide-fate-ongoing-strike.html lalastica |
Three major non-academic staff unions will decide on Wednesday whether to join the strike by university lecturers, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU will meet with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, and the Non- Academic Technicians, NAT, on Wednesday in Abuja to decide on whether to join the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an official told PREMIUM TIMES. Abdulsubur Salaam, the National Public Relations Officer of SSANU, said during an interview on Sunday that the associations have been “pushed to the wall” by the Nigerian government. “The federal government has been discussing with the academics but we have been reaching out to them since before now and they have refused to heed to us,” Mr. Salaam said. The official listed some of the problems the unions had with the government. “The issue of staff school that is being negotiated and we are not carried along was agreed on by the four unions in Nigerian varsities; our earned allowances have not been paid too and branches are really heaping pressure on us, especially on the staff school issue. “So full blown strike may be inevitable as at now. However, we would take that meeting on Wednesday and make a decision on this there.” The ASUU had embarked on a nationwide strike last Monday over demands for improved funding of universities and welfare of lecturers. A meeting between the union and the Nigerian government last Thursday ended in a deadlock . But an optimistic Adamu Adamu, the Education Minister, said the strike could be called off within one week. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/240937-nigerian-universities-set-for-more-crises-as-ssanu-nasu-nat-meet-on-nationwide-strike.html |
Lecturers of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology have accused Osun State’s Governor Rauf Aregbesola of hypocrisy over his appeal to workers to reopen the school for the sake of the students. The school has been mostly shut since last year over the failure of the two owner states to fund its operations. But on Monday, at a ceremony to receive students of Osun State University who returned from Ukraine after completing their programme in Medicine, Mr. Aregbesola appealed to LAUTECH workers to go back to work. Reacting to the appeal through a statement on Tuesday, the lecturers accused the governor of “playing the ostrich” and insensitivity to the plight of LAUTECH students. In a statement signed by chairman of the school’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Biodun Olaniran, they said LAUTECH cannot resume without the resolution of the issues that led to the closure of the university. They said the governor was being insincere in expressing concern over the plight of the students, alleging that he had declined several requests by the students to meet with him. “At what point did he become the champion of LAUTECH students that he refused to see and address despite efforts made by them to interact with him personally over their plight?” the lecturers said in the statement. “The Ila episode where he sent the students away like lepers is a graphic point in case here. Therefore, the governor of Osun State should stop behaving like the ostrich which buries its head in the sand, thinking that its rump is hidden from view.” The lecturers said they have been poorly paid since December 2013 but remained at work despite this. “May we also ask our Governor, who is asking for sacrifice on the part of LAUTECH workers; what further sacrifice does he demand from hapless workers who have remained on their duty posts since December 2013 when salaries had been epileptic, principally due to his total withholding of salary subvention to the University. “He, through his insincerity to LAUTECH, has brought the University to its knees. “A yawning contradiction in the speech clearly exposes Ogbeni’s hypocrisy. At a stage, he clearly stated that he is financially incapacitated to fund LAUTECH, only for him to end up talking about auditing as a pre-condition for release of funds.” The lecturers stopped work in protest against poor funding of the university that had led to their salaries not being paid. LAUTECH chapter of ASUU has also joined in the ongoing nationwide strike declared on Monday by the national body of the union, thereby prolonging the crisis of the university. www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/240312-lautech-lecturers-attack-gov-aregbesolas-hypocrisy.html |

The Federal High Court sitting in Ede, Osun State, has amended its earlier verdict sending Anthony Elujoba, the former Vice chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, to Ilesha prisons. The reversal came after workers and students of the school protested and locked down the court barring the judge and others from leaving. Under pressure, the judge sent the former VC to the EFCC custody as the workers and students demanded. The court also rescheduled the case from July 19 to July 14. The Non-Academic Staff Union of the university had shut down the court gate in protest after the earlier judgement. Armed policemen later stormed the court in a bid to restore law and order, but all was to no avail as the irate students and workers continued their protest. The protest lasted hours after which the judge, Oladimeji David, gave a new verdict. Mr. Elujoba, a professor, is standing trial for alleged N1.4 billion fraud. He is being prosecuted alongside the university’s bursar, Josephine Akeredolu. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/236589-breaking-nigerian-university-students-workers-force-judge-reverse-ruling-vc-accused-fraud.html Lalastical |
olanrewaju oyedeji A former Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Anthony Elujoba, has been remanded in Ilesha Prisons after the bail application was dismissed. Justice David Oladimeji of the Federal High Court in Ede, Osun State, ruled that Mr. Elujoba be remanded till July 19 when the case will be brought for hearing. The former VC is standing trial on a seven-count charge of alleged corruption and abuse of office involving some N1.4 billion. He is standing trial alongside the bursar of the university, Josephine Akeredolu. But workers of the university see Mr. Elujoba’s trial as “victimisation”. Two lecture-free days declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in solidarity with Mr. Elujoba ended Tuesday. On Tuesday, workers of the university protested the decision of the court to send the embattled professor to prison. The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, locked down the court gate as the ruling was being handed. No one was allowed to leave the premises of the court at the time of this report. The workers demanded the judge withdraw his ruling, and authorise the former vice chancellor be kept in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Students fear the latest disturbances may further affect their academic calendar. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/236517-just-former-nigerian-university-vc-sent-prison-alleged-n1-4-billion-fraud.html lalastical |
A former Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Anthony Elujoba, is expected to be arraigned today (Friday) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC over allegations that he stole N1.4 billion while in office. Last year, Mr Elujoba was quizzed by operatives of EFCC at its Ibadan zonal branch for allegedly diverting the sum meant for projects without approval of the school’s governing council or federal ministry of education. He was specifically said to have used the money to pay illegal allowances to staff including himself through it. He has been detained since Thursday by the anti-graft commission, PREMIUM TIMES learnt; and his international passport seized. Although he is accused of wrongdoing by the EFCC, Mr. Elujoba is popular among staff and students at the university, who believe he is being witch-hunted for bringing normalcy to the institution during the short period he was in office. His wife in a brief interaction with PREMIUM TIMES pleaded that her husband be spared the humiliation. “He has been there since morning please help us beg everyone to come to his aid,” she said on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Olarewaju Abiodun, told PREMIUM TIMES that the university will wait for Friday’s trial. “When we get to the court tomorrow (today) we will know what next to do, we will take steps but first let’s get to the river first,” Mr. Abiodun said, expressing sadness at the development. Some students have also come up with a campaign on social media- #EFCCFreeElujoba in obvious solidarity with the embattled professor. The EFCC said it received the petition against Mr. Elujoba in December 2016. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/236118-efcc-set-arraign-former-oau-vice-chancellor-alleged-misappropriation.html |
The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, has said that the union will resist any attempt to increase tuition fees in the country’s public universities. He also said ASUU could go on strike if the government failed to meet its demand on adequate funding of the institutions and payment of salaries. Mr. Biodun, who gave the hint in an exclusive chat with PREMIUM TIMES, said the union would not accept any increase in fees by state or federal governments. “We will not tolerate any attempt to increase tuition fee, we are against telling people to pay more, even the current fees, we are still fighting them, we as a body have always stood against fee increment and we will continue to stand against it,” he said. The union leader spoke against the backdrop of reports of a possible increase in tuition fees in universities by the federal government. According to Mr. Abiodun, ASUU has been engaging the federal government since November 2016 on issues rocking the university system. “The truth is there are lots of issues rocking the system. We have made our position known to the federal government; we have also written to state governments who have refused to give subvention to their universities,” he said. “Some of them cannot sustain one university and they go on to establish two or three, compounding the issues. “We have given the government till June ending to attend to our needs, if the government does not call us by June ending we will convey a meeting to take our position. “However, we are trying to engage the government but if they don’t invite us to a meeting before June ending, we will still take our position on whether we are going on strike or not. “But that will not be like early July but middle or late July, that is if they don’t heed to our demands which includes payment of salaries, funding, research and lots more”. Asked if ASUU would initiate a meeting with the federal government, he said “We will not initiate any meeting if they don’t call us, we can’t initiate meeting.” He added that the feedback received from the petitions written to the government would determine whether there would be strike or not. The ASUU President also spoke on the crisis at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH. “We have issues like this, a case where lecturers are not paid for months will no longer be tolerated. The truth is that this and many more make up our demands, we have written to all state governors too and we want to engage stakeholders in this issue, that is why whatever happens in July will be very comprehensive,” he said. Meanwhile, the Oyo State Commissioner of Education, Adeniyi Olowofela, has said the owner states are committed to speedy reopening of LAUTECH. He said the university would have reopened, if not for the controversy surrounding the issue of audit of its finances. Mr. Olowofela told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday that the government had given a three-week ultimatum to the external auditors, but were hindered due to lack of documents. He also said that the stance of ASUU had remained a major problem towards resolving the crisis. “The truth is when the auditors were to come in, we gave them three weeks to complete the audit, the three weeks should have elapsed but the auditors did not have enough documents to work with,” he said. According to him, the Oyo state government used federal allocations to pay civil servants’ salaries and used internally generated revenues to fund other institutions like LAUTECH. He said the government had just paid N144million as subvention to the institution. “As we speak now, the allocation that lately came from the federal government, everything was used to pay workers’ salary in the civil service,” he disclosed. “The Oyo state government also just paid N144 million to LAUTECH as subvention, we are committed to the reopening, we did that. ” On the issue of ASUU’s position and the continued controversy, Mr. Olowofela said, “What we asked of ASUU is just cooperation for three weeks, there is a difference between three weeks and eight months, we cannot obey the position of ASUU. “Really, the government only needs three weeks of the time for audit, we need to know what we really need in the university; when the audit is done, we know the needs and move on from there.” While saying that the university administration could be better, he denied that the owner states were suspecting the university management led by Adeniyi Gbadegesin of corruption. “We never said they are corrupt, as far as we are concerned we only said that the university can do better, no one is stating that they are corrupt,” he said. On when the university will reopen, Mr. Olowofela said, “We need everyone to appeal to ASUU so we can carry out what we need to, ASUU should not be the proponent of saying that the audit should not take place, they should understand that these are hard periods, these things ought to have been completed and all issues solved.” In his remarks, the Chairman of ASUU, LAUTECH Chapter, Biodun Olaniran, said, “We are not against any audit, what we needed before now and still need is the pattern of funding because that is what the university needs. “There are several other recommendations in the white paper of the visitation panel but we don’t know why it is only audit that has taken prominence.” He said the owner states should show seriousness by charting ways of funding the university more. “We wonder why they are bringing us to this issue, the documents they need are not even with us,” Mr. Biodun noted. Efforts to speak with the Vice Chancellor of the University, Adeniyi Gbadegesin, were unsuccessful as he did not pick his calls or reply messages sent to his phone as at the time of filing this report. LAUTECH has been enmeshed in controversies surrounding poor funding and disagreements between workers and owners of the university on ways to resolve the problems. The Alumni Association of the institution recently launched a #FundLAUTECH initiative intending to raise about N1billion within 90 days to support the university. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/235094-ASUU-vows-resist-increased-tuition-fees-nigerian-universities.html |
The University of Ibadan has suspended its student union leaders after a student protest led to the shutdown of the school. “The Union Executive Council and Students Representatives council have been suspended, all activities of the Union have been suspended too,” the school’s public relations officer, Olatunji Oladejo, told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday He said the decision did not affect postgraduate students. The management of the school had on Monday shut the institution and directed the students to vacate the campus on or before 6 p.m. The students had earlier taken to the streets in protest, alleging insensitivity on the part of the university management. The students at a congress on Saturday passed a resolution to disrupt the forthcoming examinations if students were not provided with identity cards. They also asked the authorities to constitute the Students’ Welfare Board as well as allow use of cooking appliances that had been banned in the halls of residence. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/232571-university-of-ibadan-suspends-student-union-leaders.html |

Association Of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife Pressroom: Fajuyuhall, Block 2,Topmost Floor, OAU Ile-Ife Email: AcjOAU2015@gmail.com #ReopenOAU Campaign AN OPEN LETTER We write to inform you of the current shut down of Obafemi Awolowo University located in Ile-Ife,Osun State Nigeria. Obafemi Awolowo University was shut down on 22nd day of June, 2016, two days before the Varsity was meant to resume for her 2015/16 session. It is with Great concern that we write this letter not just because of the current closure but also because of other issues that have remained unsolved over the years. In Obafemi Awolowo University, Students are always at the receiving end of constant crisis that has always threatened their future. . This current shut down can be traced to alleged illegality in Appointing a Vice Chancellor for the institution and the over 76months Allowance that the University is owing Non Academic Staff Union of Universities and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities which they have protested. As Students we have endured the constant closure of our citadel which has caused Psychological trauma to us from time to time. We have gone on strike every year in the last five years and this has led to untold hardship even on our parents who struggle to ensure we get qualitative Education. Anomalies that have rocked our institution has made mockery of the Greatness of Obafemi Awolowo University which Students, strive to protect. This closure is coupled with the current state of hostels in the University which has not received attention for years now even after Students protest and Campaign demanding for better welfare, some students have suffered victimization fighting for this cause but due to the undying love we have for the citadel even with the current state of welfare we have always defended the sanctity of the University with the best of our abilities as Students. The current shut down has left many of our students abandoning Education due to situations beyond their control and even situations caused by idleness. The Federal Government of Nigeria dissolved our University Governing Council and has failed to reconstitute another one, the same Federal Government failed to fast track appointment of an Acting Vice chancellor for the institution , not considering the fact that Obafemi Awolowo University Students have been at home for over 90days doing nothing. Obafemi Awolowo University in its glorious days prides itself as the most productive University in Nigeria but when Students are not even allowed to graduate our productivity becomes questionable. We find it important to write this because we are tired of been reduced to the streets due to constant closure of the University, whenever we attend a lecture we always have fears that the next day might come with no lecture because the school may have been shut suddenly. We believe that if issues surrounding dilapidated structures,Workers welfare, Poor Hostels, Epidemic Calendar, Victimization of Students, appalling welfare are looked into, Students would not have to go home and abandon their Education involuntarily. We have started a Social media Campaign to air our grievances, we have started trending the hashtag ReopenOAU but we believe that if Obafemi Awolowo University is managed very well, it has the potential to become one of the best around the globe. We want to use this medium to ask that the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency constitute a New Governing Council for the institution and immediately appoint an Acting Vice Chancellor for the institution so that Students can resume. Students have been at the receiving end of the mismanagement in Obafemi Awolowo University and we do not want to be used like slaves anymore,we are human too and we have a future to protect. The Federal Government of Nigeria should also look into the administration of the University in the last five years, Students believe that the University was poorly managed and Students want the Federal Government to set up a panel to thoroughly investigate how OAU has been managed from 2011-2016. We are in the month of July,2016 and we are yet to commence 2015/16 session, with the current conditions in the labor market, there are bracket and age limit to employment opportunities , and we are falling off the age bracket . Our Students have lost out in internship programs and scholarships due to the constant shut down of the University. Conclusively, we believe that Education with quality is our right, the Federal Government of Nigeria needs to always put future leaders first in their plans. We also want all quarters involved in affairs of the University to put Students interest at heart and ensure that they play their part without selfish motivations or individual glories. We are interested in making our citadel return back to its former glory. Thank you. Signed Olanrewaju Oyedeji ACJOAU President Adebayo Faith General Secretary Abegunde Cephas Public Relations Officer |

.. Says NASU Protest Illegal Olanrewaju Oyedeji Academic staff union of universities (ASUU) has said the emergence of Prof Salami as new vice Chancellor of OAU followed due process. This position was stated by Chairman of ASUU OAU(Caleb Aborisade) during an exclusive with The Insider. He said " He said the governing council did not do anything wrong in the appointment of a new vice chancellor for OAU. By the impact of the 2009 federal universities act, OAU has the autonomy to appoint a new vice chancellor through the governing council " Aborisade further revealed that none of the candidates complained about the process, he wondered why NASU is taking paracetamol for "a headache that doesn't exist". The ASUU chairman also said " six persons were shortlisted and no one has complained to us about the processes, we have representatives in the governing council and the representatives did not give us any bad report I don't know where NASU got their own report " On the initiation of a court process by NASU, Aborisade continued by saying "The case is not before me and even when the judge gives a decision, he will have to tell us what the governing council had done wrong. Their protest is illegal because people cannot move freely on campus,is that not illegal? They (SSANU and NASU) have a right to protest but it should be within the law", Aborisade said. There is a gridlock on campus as NASU blocked all major roads. Olanrewaju Oyedeji Mr Tunji Ekpeti Micheal popularly known as "Mote" has revealed that university of Ibadan reinstating him is not do or die. In an exclusive chat with Insider News, Mote said " I trust the students' union to solve the issues surrounding my suspension but as I have always said, my reinstatement is not do or die" He further revealed that if the students' union does not succeed after all protests, he may have to serve his full suspension. "All I can say is that if the union fails to achieve the desired result then I may say there is nothing that would be done again, I will have to serve the suspension" Mr Tunji revealed that there has been entreaties from members of staffs regarding his situation " I have not been threatened by the management, just some entreaties by staffs" Tunji Ekpeti Micheal a 500level student of Petroleum engineering was suspended owing to his alleged in a protest last year. University of Ibadan has been in controversy since the suspension of Mote. The closure and threat of expulsion did notin deter the students from further protest. At a point students turned the frontage of the main gate of the university into a kitchen, where they kindled fire, set cooking pot on some blocks and begin to cook beans porridge. Music from Disc Jockeys (DJ) blared to keep up the spirit of protest while they were at it. Somwhere along the line, they mockingly invited the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, to partake of the meal, though he was not physically present with them. Talking about the protest, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West Zone, had joined the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of UI to press home their demands. While their protest was first dedicated to asking the management to recall the rusticated student, students also focused on provision of basic amenities on the campus. The students wanted UI management to reverse its decision to impose extra semester on Ekpeti for taking part in the November 18, 2015 protest as well as solve the problems of water and electricity supplies. To make good their demands, they once barricaded the Ojoo-Sango Road in front of the main gate of the university. The blockade prevented vehicular movements and led to traffic logjam in Orogun, Ojoo, Agbowo and Bodija areas of Ibadan. With the current statement of the suspended Mote , it confirms Insider reports that Mote may not be freed. http://theinsidernewsng.com/exclusiveui-i-may-have-to-serve-my-suspension-term-tunji-ekpeti-mote/ cc fynestboi |
