moderators, I know FP is very sacred but if you can support the cause of OAU Students and the writer, it will be great |
Dear Sir, OPEN LETTER TO OAU VC, PROF BAMITALE OMOLE Greetings to you sir, I hope this meets you well. I am highly glad to write this letter addressed to your person as I have taken it upon myself to intimate you about some happenings on OAU Campus since I know you are not aware of such happening because I trust that if you were aware you would have taken swift action to rectify the issues am about to raise but I understand you, since even Buhari has no singular knowledge of happenings in Nigeria since he isn't so close to Nigeria, same with you sir, since you are not so close to students am not surprised that you have not done some important things. I have also decided not to include my name not because am afraid but I do not seek cheap popularity from this article rather I want you to read and act. Thank you in advance Our great VC. Sir, I know you are not aware of the bad shape of hostels the inhuman conditions of living even after increase in school fee , I want to believe that you must have signed a huge amount towards renovation of hostels but those you sent the message to renovate must be the reason for the delay in hostels renovation, I recommend that you should personally pay hostels visit to see the ghetto conditions there. Since you have a good working relationship with students I will implore that you should personally visit Awolowo hall, since a leader should at least check on his followers , am saying this because I believe for you to spend millions on the new senate building definitely we should expect a reciprocal improvement in hostels, atleast students paid almost 100000 naira expecting better welfare and we can see nothing now, kindly call your workers who you must have awarded hostel renovation to, to order, they are doing nothing. I know you are not aware so I need to tell you, I trust that if you were aware you would have acted as every leader should. Sir, I need to tell you that we don't have lecture theaters in OAU, since you increased the fee by almost 200 percent I think multiplier effect should have taken place but it took place badly as we are retrogressing, I want to tell you sir that our lecture theaters encourage mass failure, we have not seen any change since the increment, water, light now fluctuates. All this things now go against financial ethics and economic principles, remember one of the reasons why you said the increment of fee was necessary is the fact that you think OAU needs modern facilities but they cost much, sir we have not seen the new facilities or perhaps those who should put them to use in our halls, labs, lecture theaters have refused to do that, sir why don't you instruct them to do so since you have the powers. Vice Chancellor sir, also quality of lectures have dropped, even when we did not agree to fee hike you implemented it and now we are rather suffering damage than good . I hope to see you acting soon at least now that I have told you what you did not know before, we should see change, if half of what will be spent on the titanic ship ( New Senate building) will be spent on hostels, I will be glad since students are also stakeholders on OAU Campus. Thanks in advance. Signed Concerned Great Ife Student, Larrysam cc: lalasticlala fynestboi |
National Association of Nigerian Campus Editors, upholding objectivity in campus journalism.... http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/campus-journalists-inaugurate-editors-association/ |
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN CAMPUS EDITORS ...promoting Objectivity in campus journalism Press Statement: State of Education In Nigeria; A Gunless Boko-Haram Over the years Nigerian Students have been grappling under the effect of constant strike actions, delayed future, lackadaisical behaviors of lecturers, lack of learning facilities, Mismanaging managers, egocentric leaders etc All this abnormalities can be said to be a reason for the decadence of a sector that is meant to be a sustaining factor of any country in the 21st century . It is disheartening that over the years Nigeria has been accused of producing half-baked and below standard graduates, little wonder that no university can boast of been among the best 200 in the world, yet we call ourselves giant of Africa. Nigeria is blessed no doubt with intellectuals but what has becloud our sense of duty is more of corruption than lack of resources. It is important to note that in the early seventies, learning was worth it all after all facilities were present and there was the right attitude to learn, then the word 'half baked graduates never existed'. Our so called top and leading institutions are nothing but advanced secondary schools, some that still boast of quality only live in the glory of time past, the adage "in the land of the blind, one eyed man is always the king" applies fully to Nigeria. The current state of our lectures environment starting from hostels to lecture theaters are nothing but advanced prisons, the only difference between prisons and Nigerian hostels can be traced to freedom of movement, what do you say about 3000 students receiving lecture in a 500-seaters lecture theater? What do we say about hostels that are not with good facilities yet lecturers live in luxury. Our educational system has now come to the state where our lecturers don't bother to teach again, they leave students to their fates and to some people even lecturers of 21st century in Nigeria know nothing, hard but they maybe right. Decadence in the education sector can be traced to mismanagement of little funds available for the sector especially in our higher institutions of learning, Insincerity of government over the years is also responsible for the failure of this sector, it is disheartening that government has refused to properly fund education 'Nigeria's future' , any country that cannot invest in education has nowhere to go, has no future in the real sense. It is very obvious that key stakeholders over the years have failed to go back to the drawing table to map out sincere strategies that will aid education sector, commonsensically one would have expected our renowned corrupt university, polytechnic, colleges of education and various institutes' management to understand that sinking the future of Nigerian education is like sinking the future of Nigeria. In Nigeria, we have become comfortable traveling overseas to study and even pride ourselves in it, nobody is thinking of making Nigerian varsities worth coming sometime soon, political leaders easily boast of having their kids in England, when all they want is for their families to have qualitative education while Nigerian youths should not. Probe of the Nigerian Universities management is undebatable at this point in time, they should be held responsible for not even handling the little funds at their disposal well, many institutions have increased fees but quality of education has failed to improve hereby going against law of economics and financial ethics . WAY FORWARD A review of our educational policies should be done, most of them do not fit into the present day realities ... An audit of accounts of all higher institutions of learning in Nigeria .... A probe of higher institution(s) administrations in Nigeria ... A productive funding of the education sector in Nigeria .... Engaging of student bodies on possible ways of revamping education sector in Nigeria ..... Review of learning curriculums in Nigerian varsities .... A national tour of higher institutions of learning to ascertain the level of their decadence. We believe in spite of all present challenges, Nigeria has a future. God bless Nigeria. Olanrewaju Oyedeji Mohammed Fawehinmi, eldest son of the late foremost legal practitioner, Gani Fawehimi, has lambasted the governors of Oyo, Ondo and Osun states over their alleged failure to develop the states. He specifically demanded the impeachment of the governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, by the state House of Assembly. Mr. Fawehinmi stated this on Thursday while delivering a lecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The lecture, entitled “Youths Impact in Free and Fair Elections,” which was second in the series, was organized in honour of the legal practitioner, who died in September 2009. According to him, the three south west states have remained at the same level of decadence because of the refusal of the governors to make any meaningful impact since the governors assumed office. “Oyo State is a shadow of herself from what it used to be,” Mr. Fawehimi said. “Everywhere is very bad and it is something that is unbecoming, I clamour for impeachment of Oyo state Governor Ajimobi” “Since he is incapable he should be impeached from the government. The last few years in Oyo has been very bad. I passed through the place and I was unhappy.” He also said there had been no major improvement in the State of Osun under Governor Rauf Aregbesola, “except that when I got to a part of the state I saw a new statue; everything looks unchanged, nothing so new or no improvement.” He also accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko for alleged “underperformance.” Mr. Fawehinmi said but for the efforts made by the students of the university, his father would have died without earning the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. According to him, it was the students of the institution who awarded the late lawyer the title “Senior Advocate of the Masses,” that they now conferred on him the prestigious title of SAN.” He said, “My father would have died a man without the apex title and would have being robbed of what he deserves if not for the effort of OAU Students. “Nobody knows the role OAU students played; it would have been miserably painful for my family.” Mr. Fawehinmi also accused OAU management of falling below standard and not paying attention to areas of needs of the university. He claimed that the institution had lost its glory and could not boast of the standards it was known for. “I went to the hostels in your school (OAU) and it is a shame. When I saw the living conditions of students, it is even dangerous for your health as students. It is time to call the attention of the Federal Government to the sorry state of this school.” The President of OAU Students Union, Omotayo Akande, criticized the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over its plan to pay N5000 to each unemployed Nigerian youth. He said, “We have lots of decadence in the education sector that needs attention and all the president can think of is investment of over one trillion naira in paying young unemployed graduates, does he mean graduates are worth just N5000? He is only compounding woes of Nigerian youths.” www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/193491-gani-fawehinmis-son-slams-swest-governors-over-alleged-underperformance.html |

Olanrewaju Oyedeji Students in Nigerian tertiary institutions have called for the resignation of the executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS. This came in the wake of an award of “golden man of the year” conferred on Buruji Kashamu last week by the apex students’ body. Mr. Kashamu is the senator representing Ogun East, whose election was quashed on Friday by the National Assembly election tribunal. In separate interviews with students, they described the award investiture as “a complete show of shame”. The Public Relations Officer of Obafemi Awolowo Students’ Union, Emmanuel Ojedokun, described the award as a completely unnecessary move. He said that, “the current set of NANS Leaders are political jobbers who need to be shown the way out if they fail to leave honourably.” “Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union is not part of the latest move by NANS,” Mr. Ojedokun said. Also speaking, a students’ representative from University of Lagos, Tope Ojedele, who is the president of the school’s press team expressed disappointment at the action of NANS. She said “The action of NANS is very questionable especially looking at the integrity of Mr Kashamu. The award is more like ‘cash and carry’”. “We want the NANS leaders to resign, if they cannot explain the reasons for the award since they may have their own reasons.” She expressed fear that the next set of NANS could be worse. Samuel Opeyemi, another student of Obafemi Awolowo University, also condemned the award by NANS. “It is pitiable and laughable that national Association of. Nigerian Students leaders have decided to drag the name of the association into mud,” he said. “If we as students have no integrity, I wonder what the hope of Nigeria is. It is high time we had new sets of leaders in the students’ body.” However, a student leader of the University of Ibadan and president of union of Campus Journalists called for caution in condemning NANS leadership. “Even though the action of NANS is condemnable, taking hasty steps in dealing with NANS leaders may spell doom,” he said. “The only thing we may want to do is to go back to the drawing table so we can restructure NANS. Moreover they may have their reasons for giving the award to Kashamu. We need to listen their reasons,” he said. Reacting to the condemnation of the award, NANS, through its South West General Secretary, Oloja Olanrewaju, said the award was given to Mr. Kashamu for his philanthropy. “Buruji Kashamu is an untiring hardworking man who has an exemplary and leadership style. During the eight months unpaid salary saga in Osun state, he supplied 5000 bags of rice and 1000 gallons of kerosene, he has also supported democracy and education that is more of why he emerged as a senator in Nigeria that is why we think he deserves the award,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/191303-nigerian-students-demand-resignation-of-nans-excos-over-kashamu.html |

OAU ALLEDGED LECTURER DUPES STUDENTS ---- ACCUSED OF COLLECTING MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENSE ----- SET TO FACE COURT ACTIONS Olanrewaju Oyedeji,Ile-Ife Akinyele Olushola Patrick is allegedly a lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo university who claims to be from the department of architecture of the same institution, funnily Akinyele also claims to be from the Institute for Entrepreneurship and development studies (IFEDS OAU). According to students who have fallen victims of his dubious acts, Mr AKinyele specializes in collecting money from prospective students of OAU under the pretense that they will be given straight admission if they pay him some amount of money totaling into hundreds of thousands. Speaking with our correspondent a victim of Mr Akinyele , , Adeola Ofoetan said " Mr Akinyele has constantly duped students, before coming to Osun state , i have heard a-lot about him but did not believe , i can stand here to say i have continued blaming myself that i met mr Akinyele, he collected house rent from me but refused to pay the caretaker, instead of paying the caretaker he went ahead to tell her that he is the one paying my school fee at IFEDS, he told the caretaker that he is the one feeding me and the one that got me crying was when he said i have no parent but rather he adopted me from an orphanage, i am not an orphan, Mr Akinyele collected thousands of naira from me as school fee of IFEDS but i found out that school fee at IFEDS is just 14,000 naira, i trusted him that is why gave him everything,i plan to charge him to court for defaming me" Also speaking with our correspondent Isaac Adeyinka another victim of Mr Akinyele said " Mr Akinyele is a dubious man, i trusted mr Akinyele with my education, he lied to me that IFEDS will be used for direct entry into OAU and it was a lie, IFEDS never even said so, he said that so he can dupe me, and i fell victim, i wasted two years without any gain, i even did not write JAMB because Mr Akinyele kept assuring me that IFEDS can be used as Direct Entry, many times also he has duped me financially". Speaking in same vain, mr Samuel Daniel supported the claims saying he is privy to Mr Akinyele Dubious act. Maria Oguntoye also condemned Mr Akinyele, she said the man almost ruined her educational career by collecting several thousands of naira, also , "he collected several thousands from my parents but duped us all i am still languishing in pain as my parents said i connived with him". " I also know of how he asks my friends to pay him some amount so he can help them bribe lecturers for favourable results, i just love to call on all unsuspecting youths to be careful of the man called mr Akinyele, i do not want anybody to experience what i am going through" Efforts to speak with mr Akinyele proved abortive as he remained mute when asked about the veracity of the allegations, he said " I choose not to speak now

On the day of his shining, Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was clearly taller than his height. He exuded charisma, strength and power. Not so any more it appears as the governor fights for his political future with a combustible workforce breathing down his neck, even as a vexatious impeachment threat has just been lifted off his neck. Olanrewaju Oyedeji takes a look at how the maverick “Aregbe” lost his high ground and how he can regain it. His emergence on the nation’s political scene was initially not with any much high drama. After his days as a student activist, the youthful ‘Mushin Boy’ found a spot in the neo-emergent Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation (BATCO) and was to contribute most vibrantly to the campaign success of his principal, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Post-election, the Osun indigene was to be rewarded with the very critical position of Commissioner of Works in the Tinubu administration. He was riding high. Appreciating that all political power flowed ultimately from very close interaction with the grassroots, Aregbesola however continued to keep a very close hold on the politics of Mushin and the extended BATCO campaign organization. Another strategic thing he did was to also remain most loyal to his principal, even as Tinubu warded off blows from all sides. Funsho Williams. Chicago-gate. Kofo Bucknor. Olusegun Obasanjo. AD. Afenifere. It was a most stormy season but Aregbesola remained the active and ebullient supporter of Bola Tinubu all the way. When the then fledgling Action Congress took the decision to spread beyond Lagos and pitch for power across the states of the South West and beyond, it was almost naturally its youthful and battle tested Turks like Aregbesola that were to be given flags to lead the battle charge in their respective states. At first, Aregbesola’s fight to displace the incumbent PDP Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola seemed like a David and Goliath conflict. Oyinlola was a battle- hardened Army General who had run Lagos State, been a solid plank in the dreaded Abacha dictatorship and was already serving one term in office as Governor in the state that the youthful upstart from Lagos was coming to ruffle. But Aregbesola forged on and in one of the most determined contests of that season was finally to be declared winner of the April 14, 2007 governorship election held in Osun state after three years of a grueling and most protracted political and legal battle by the Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan. Indeed, the seeds of the present crisis go as far back as the period of that election. In Osun state then it was just typical that indigenes of the state were divided into factions, a faction was loyal to the candidate of the action congress while the other faction was loyal to Oyinlola. For instance in the Ife area of the state, the indigenes were basically in support of the People’s Democratic Party candidate while indigenes of Modakeke preferred to cast their votes for the Action Congress. Such was the divide in the state then. This division can be traced to various reasons, some of which included the part of the state each candidate hailed from and there was even an assumption that “it is natural and normal for indigenes of Ife to vote for the PDP while Modakeke indigenes will always vote for the opposition party.” Read more at www.thedifferencenews.com/aregbesolas-fading-glory/ |
My problem with Nigerian Youths (1) by Olanrewaju Oyedeji In a country of over 150000000 persons one would expect a thriving economy and with natural resources one would expect a developed economy but Nigeria is not getting it right. My message is to the Nigerian youth reading this, guy or lady, see you are gifted and talented, well you may believe that talents has heirachy but i disagree, the way you uilize your talents determines who you are, Bill Gates isn't better than you, he is only smarter. Nigerian youths are too reliant on what the govt can offer not what they can offer i begin to imagine where our ideas have gone, i am usually annoyed when i read that a PHD holder is jobless, do you mean office work? My dear PHD holder did you graduate with corruption? Why can't you think of ideas just like the owners of shell did before establishing it, won't you live if total does not exist? Why are you been parasitic? Why can't you use your wealth of experience to develop a new invention and employ people, all what Nigerian youths know is theory, school hasn't thought us practicals, America is where we run to, can't we youths be productive? You say Buhari is bad and yet your phone is worth 50k do you how much the 50k can become if you invest it? You say Jonathan was a failure and during his regime you bought a galaxy tab of 60k, not withstanding the fact that you have a laptop worth 100k, do you know you can employ 5persons with 60k while you start your business? Still you update on your facebook status " i am tired of Nigeria, this country is bullshit" my freind you are the bull shit in Nigeria. American youths are the one making America great, Nigerian youths spend heir money on unneccessary things and expect that their standard of living be high .... To be contd |

Rites for Ooni: Ipetumodu Market booms as Ife traders relocate - Daily Sun From OLANREWAJU OYEDEJI, Ile-Ife AKINOLA Market is a sparse trading post located along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway in Ipetumodu, in the outskirts of Ile- Ife, Osun State. It consist of a row of stalls where farm produce such as yams, fruits, processed gari, palm oil and snails are sold. For a long time, the small market had served the needs of motorists and travellers along this route. However, the market has been the beneficiary of the closure of markets in Ile-Ife as well as the seven-day dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed as part of rites of passage for the late Ooni of Ife who was buried last Friday, as traders and residents of the town have since relocated there for commercial activities. The curfew did not extend to Akinola Market as Ipetumodu is an independent neighbouring town to Ile Ife. Traders found an alternative in Akinola Market, which they have stormed in their numbers with their wares and produce. Although it is quite a distance from their erstwhile comfort zone and obviously costs more in terms of transportation to get their stuffs to the new market, the Ife traders, some of whom had earlier been patronising Akinola on its major market days seem to have taken solace in the adage that ‘half- bread is better than none’ rather than sit down idle at home. Shoppers from Ife too had to besiege the market, saying they could not afford to starve for the seven days the curfew would last. A bus trip from Sabo and Opa (another area in Ile-Ife) to Akinola costs N70 and N100. When Daily Sun visited the hitherto scanty market, it was bustling with activities. Traders attributed the boom to the development in Ile Ife. Some of them who spoke with Daily Sun confirmed that business have been good as they made good profits from the large turnout of shoppers. Aminat a trader said: “Yes, we thank God that we are getting better returns. The Ooni of Ife is dead truly, but we are like chickens in the hands of the Creator, we at Akinola market are reaping the benefits of the Oro (rites) in Ife.” |
Outrage over details of NITEL/MTel sale- TheDifferencenews.com Aug 19, 2015 Editorial Business, Investment, News, Nigeria, Top News Like By Olanrewaju Oyedeji A storm is brewing at the moment with analysts expressing outrage over the last-minute sale of NITEL/ MTel by the Jonathan administration to the hastily put together NATCOM consortium led by the Chairman of Skye Bank Plc, the Kogi-born Chief Olatunde Ayeni. They have therefore welcomed the probe of the transaction that was ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday. Pitching the sale figure of $252m (Two hundred and fifty two million dollars only) against the $400m (four hundred million dollars) paid in 2007 by the GSM-only operator, Etisalat, the analysts are arguing that given the sheer range of assets and attachments included in the NITEL/MTel package, the NITEL/Mtel sale does have all the trappings of a classical ‘sweetheart’ transaction. It will be recalled that the Etisalat acquisition had granted it a Unified Access License that related only to a mobile license and spectrum in the GSM 1800 and 900 MHz bands. This is more or less like a basic permit fee paid to be able to operate in Nigeria. On the contrary, the 2014 sale of NITEL, and its subsidiary MTEL to the NATCOM Consortium came with the very plum 0804 GSM license, over 500 new sites built by MTEL, sundry GSM equipment deployed to about 150 NITEL sites with towers, MTEL customer offices, all NITEL sites nationwide, all NITEL properties nationwide, the extensive NITEL optic fibre cable network (both digital and analogue) and the submarine cable that links Nigeria across the Atlantic to the outside world popularly called SAT-3. All of these are $148m less than the cost of just the license Etisalat paid to NCC before they became operational. Equally distressing the commentators say is the fact that, despite the sale, the Federal Government of Nigeria is yet saddled with the costs of the existing liabilities of NITEL/MTEL which had been currently estimated at a princely sum of about N300bn. There are also concerns over the transparency of the pre- qualification/bidding components of the sale, with some industry watchers signaling that it was not very open. They also doubt the technical and financial capability of the NATCOM consortium to turn around the company for the better, given these posers as well as the fact that nothing significant has really been heard from the consortium since the acquisition. |
‘Nigerians sharply divided over anti- corruption war’ -Thedifferencenews.com Aug 19, 2015 Editorial News, Nigeria, Politics, Top News Like By Makinde Ayotunde and Olanrewaju Oyedeji In a typical demonstration of the state of alienation in which the Nigerian people have been held over the years, alongside the gross divisions that remain in the polity, a poll conducted across the country last week by The Difference has revealed very sharp divisions in Nigerians’ perception of the ongoing war on corruption and its prosecution. Of the total of 209 respondents polled, 73 representing 34. 9 percent affirmed that they not only want the war continued and taken to its logical conclusion, they also expressed their confidence in the incumbent president’s ability to prosecute and win the war, hinging their optimism chiefly on the fact that ‘he is disciplined and has a military background.’ However, 71 respondents representing 34.0 percent of those polled stated that they were not interested in whether the Muhammadu Buhari administration prosecutes and wins the ongoing war against corruption in the country or not on account of their disillusionment with the overall Nigerian political system.. Another 45 respondents, representing 21.1 percent of all respondents affirmed most emphatically that in their view there was no way President Buhari could win the war no matter how hard he fought it and they adduced their reasons for this. While some volunteered that their conclusion was on account of their perception that the war was presently being prosecuted in a selective and jaundiced manner, others questioned the moral basis of President Buhari undertaking the campaign in the first place given their view that he had himself been helped to power ‘by corrupt people!’ For the final 20 respondents representing 9.6 percent of all that were polled, they preferred to remain in the middle affirming that Buhari may yet be able to win the war if all the variables were right. The poll was conducted last week within the South West zone of the country and it was administered through face- to-face and social media interviews . Meanwhile, the thought-provoking results of the poll is coming even as there is increasing concern over the increasing numbers of aides of former President Goodluck Jonathan who are presently pleading ill-health as an excuse for continuing to evade interrogation and possible prosecution over alleged acts of omission and commission they had reportedly been involved in during the lifespan of the immediate past administration. And in a country that has long been enmeshed in a crisis of integrity, the fear is that going forward and as the Buhari administration ramps up the pressure in the ongoing war against corruption, many more hospital alibis would show up on the table. Among those who have allegedly pleaded ill-health at this time is the former ‘Super minister’ of Petroleum Affairs, Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke who is reportedly undergoing medical care in a United Kingdom hospital. There is also Gordon Obua who is in an Abuja hospital and Kingsley Kuku, an immediate past Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Coordinator of the Niger Delta amnesty office in the same Jonathan era. In recent times, a gale of dismissals and resignations has visited major agencies and parastatals in the country. These include the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Nigerian Maritime Safety and Administration Authority, the Nigerian Customs Service, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and that of the Office of the National Security Adviser |
