I remember when we received that beautiful new year gift by Good luck Jonathan, we protested. Here is another scenario from a different government, its important to wake up and ensure that we do not protest for selfish reasons, rather let's take a look at the subsidy over the years, subsidy has been removed for a long while it was not announced officially however. When government announced 97naira benchmark then, you will notice that fuel scarcity was the order of the day, we rarely enjoyed 97naira for long, in reality we bought fuel for 120-140naira, even when president Buhari fixed it at 86.50 naira, we bought it for 150-180, the question we should be asking is that, was the FG still paying subsidy when it was sold for 150? When we noticed slight scarcity and we have 160 as pump price was subsidy suspended? I think the reality is, do we still want to keep buying at prices higher than 145naira and subsidy continues or we will buy at maximum of 145naira while subsidy will be removed. I feel this competition introduced is not so welcome by an average Nigerian because we don't want to hear about that word "increase".. Seriously, if we complain about subsidy removal we have to understand that there was no subsidy before, they only played pranks on us, the marketers collected their " share " of subsidy and it was not effected. While do we cry out when we never had stability of petrol price for five months at a go, there was always scarcity and marketers cashed on this. I wonder why NLC waited till this official announcement to act, NLC never dedicated one day to raise the knowledge of the average man on the street and raise his interest about asking questions on how our money is spent, take actions that will reveal if we really enjoyed subsidy or not, I think Nigerians need not be fooled, this is an action we have to weigh on . In all sincerity, if I will nail the federal government, I will nail them because current leaders condemned same removal during era of PDP not because they didn't trust the government but because they said removal of subsidy is wrong economically and we all believed. Trade unions should not just see this as an opportunity to be seen and heard, they should see it as an opportunity to fight for many right things, if we are going to fight for subsidy, let's really ensure that PMS is subsidized! We can't keep wasting government's money on things that rarely impact us. If we fight for increase in wages, we must ensure that we fight anomalies in our market systems, if we say we will allow the subsidy removal in return for 56000 naira minimum wage, let's ensure we are not deceiving ourselves, let's think it straight, 560000 naira may end up to be 18000naira, there maybe no difference, we can't keep fighting ourselves over policies, we should fight for effectiveness! I really want to say I am not angry at subsidy removal because there was no subsidy before except I can be proven wrong. Nigerian students condemn ban on UNILAG Students’ Union April 25, 2016 Olanrewaju Oyedeji students across Nigerian universities have condemned the temporary ban placed on the University of Lagos Students Union by the management of the school. The management suspended the union following protests by students against poor welfare conditions in the school. PREMIUM TIMES reported how the protesting students blocked major roads leading into the university, including access to the school’s Senate building and the Assembly Hall where Rahman Bello, the Vice Chancellor, was attending an event. Armed police officers were later brought in to disperse the angry students. The university was also shut and students asked to go home. The authorities later said students will sign undertakings to be of be good behaviour before the school is re-opened on May 2. In a statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union, Jumai fabuyi, said students should not sign the undertaking or pay any fee demanded by the management. “As the management did not communicate with the UNION at all to deliberate or discuss the students’ welfare. We would NEVER agree to such,” he said. He further queried the sincerity of the university management in asking students to sign the undertaking. “Why should we sign a form to be readmitted? Don’t you smell a rat? Don’t you feel there might be more to the situation than we see? “Why is the Union suspended? For staging a peaceful protest?” he asked rhetorically. The Press Club of the university, which represents student journalists, had earlier described the actions of the management as undemocratic. Femi Adeniji, the President of the Press Club said in a statement that the management’s actions do not address issues raised during the protests. The Nigerian Campus Editors has also asked the university management to amicably resolve its grievances with the student leaders. The editors made their stance known in a statement signed by the national secretary general, Abdulganiy Shehu, a student of the University of Ilorin, and national vice president, Chukwu Daniel, a student of the University of Lagos. “We have noticed the sad situation in UNILAG. It is painful that in era of Democracy, the university management wants to ensure that students have no voice even as Democracy gives voice to the voiceless. “We call on the university management to give common sense a chance,” the campus editors said. Another student leader at the University of Lagos said the suspension of the union would only take its activities underground. Emmanuel Afolabi, the General Secretary of the Students’ Union said the union would continue its activities silently despite the ban. In his reaction, a student activist from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Bamidele Williams, said the suspension is a slap on students’ struggle and should not be allowed to stay. Authorities of the University of Lagos announced that students should resume on May 2 after signing the undertaking while examinations start a week later on May 9. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/202377-nigerian-students-condemn-ban-unilag-students-union.html cc:Fynestboi |

OAU lecturers accuse school management of administering N3.5 billion without due process April 20, 2016 Olanrewaju Oyedeji The Budget Monitoring Committee of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, has accused the management of the institution of expending N3. 5billion meant for hostel renovation and construction of new lecture theaters in breach of due process and transparency. The funds were part of the N100billion released by the Federal Government in 2013 for all universities in response to the long drawn agitations of ASUU against the government. The implementation monitoring committee had spelt out guidelines for accessing the intervention fund for Nigerian Public Universities, but the school failed to abide by the guidelines. According the report of the committee addressed to ASUU members, and which was obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the management failed to follow due process in contract awarding as well as failing to utilize needs assessment phase 1 funds made available to the institution in August 2013 as required by the guidelines. The report which was signed by the committee’s chairman, A.O, Aderibigbe, on 4th of January 2016, also noted that the approval for the release of the funds was done in writing by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education addressed to the Vice Chancellor of OAU on 23rd of August 2013. The report indicated that the letter from the Ministry of Education conveyed the approval of NI3.5billion needs Assessment phase 1, funds to OAU under the Special university revitalization programme based on the needs Assessment report. The monitoring committee reported that the following projects, namely Rehabilitation/Renovation of hostels for N200million; Rehabilitation/Renovation of lecture theaters and lecture rooms for N250million; Construction of new facilities-Hostels, N 2billion; Construction of new facility -Lecture Theaters and lecture rooms, N300million and Construction of new facility - Laboratories and Library, N300million, all totaling N3.5billion, were to be carried out as approved. The committee noted that the second tranche of the funds totaling N2.833billion was transferred from the Central Bank of Nigeria to two commercial bank accounts operated by the institution. Foramfera “On 30/09/2014 I was reliably informed that the sum of N2,833,703,703.61 was transferred from the CBN into the OAU account with the bank and in this regard the university administration directed an officer to issue receipts as follows (a) First Bank, account no: 2023659287 Account name:OAU Special revitalization programmer Account , Amount N1,308,703,703.61billion and Zenith Bank, Account number:1013549122 Account name: OAU Presidential Implementation of Needs Assessment Account, Amount :N1,525,000,000billion and the officer complied, the truth will surely prevail sooner than later,” Mr. Aderibigbe stated in the report. “The letter informing the university of the transfer of N3.5billion directed that there should be strict compliance with the procurement act 2007 in the implementing of the projects.” The ASUU monitoring committee stated that while the approval letter quoted an allocation of the sum of 3.5billion, the university claimed it received only N2.833billon. The committee wondered how an allocation of N3.5billion naira meant to execute projects worth the same sum, would turn out to become N2.833billion. The committee further alleged that the university had unilaterally identified, prioritized and awarded contracts for some of the projects with total exclusion and sidelining of university budget monitoring committee, ASUU BMC said that in compliance with the IMC Guidelines the projects should be awarded with the knowledge of ASUU’s monitoring committee, adding that the management was in violation of stipulated guidelines and due process . The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Abiodun Olanrewaju, told PREMIUM TIMES that ASUU’s allegation was false, as all funds received by the institution from the Federal Government had been judiciously used. He said the management of OAU had also been transparent in the handling of the funds and the execution of projects in line due process of procurement. “To the best of my knowledge we always advertise all the infrastructural projects in two national newspapers and the tenders journal in Abuja,” Mr. Olanrewaju said. “Fortunately, my office is in charge of placing the adverts for interested persons to be aware. “If there is agreement between the management and ASUU regarding the administration of the funds, I am not aware.” www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/202119-oau-lecturers-accuse-school-management-administering-n3-5-billion-without-due-process.html cc: fynestboi |

His letter for instance is borne out of bitter politics.. He stated that Nigerian foreign reserves is depleting, caused by who all the years? We are all aware that even USA is owing, no country of the world is really a standout country or a tree, let me also state that Fayose showed Pessimism in his letter, his fear was that Nigeria may not utilize the money well and he doubted our ability to pay back, does he mean Nigerian cannot come out of this current bad situation? has he written off Nigeria for the next two years? morever what has he done managing his state? these are logical questions |
"It took your party (PDP) 16Years to destroy Nigeria but you are asking APC to rebuild Nigeria within Ten months, remember its easier to destroy than to build" Fayose been attacking Buhari but his party had 16years, I am not a political analyst but I just want to make common sense, enough of this dirty politics, we cannot keep washing Nigeria's image in mud.. |

My little piece is aimed at looking critically at the issues surrounding recent secondary school students protest in Osun. I have paid rapt attention to the issues surrounding the protest and all the state government is saying is that "Osun state students are too dull and don't have a future in education". The state government claim that students have in recent years failed WAEC and so the need to stop paying. We are all aware of the economic crisis in Osun so I may want to make some observations: 1) Osun state government already knew the number of those she can cater for in terms of WAEC Fee so those that will pass the mock exam must not exceed that number 2) If the students failed so much! Is there head blocked or what? Why is the state government watching failures for three years rather than take a look at quality of what this students are taught in school , it maybe a problem of teaching structure if truly they failed the mock exam as the government claim! It would mean the teachers have low output and are not productive 3) where does the government want those who will not write WAEC to go? They should become nuisance to the society or drop their ambition of been educated? 4) why can't the state government declare that she can't continue with free WAEC fee and will only pay for best students then everyone will take heart, rather than playing the smart game 5. Is Aregbesola's government trying to say Osun products are naturally dull? 6) What singles out a government is ability to fight hard times! If the government noticed failures for three years, why didn't they find solutions? 7) Is Mock exam a true test if strength? The above are my sincere above observations .. The students who protested and destroyed things also show that a lot is wrong with educational system of Osun! Leaders of tomorrow ? Ipinle Omoluabi eronu, think! campus editors guild: Osun Students' Protest: Are Osun Students Dull? - http://campuseditorsng..co.ke/2016/02/osun-students-protest-are-osun-students.html?m=1 |
Olanrewaju Oyedeji Despite efforts and assurances by the Federal Government that it would rescue the abducted Chobok girls alive, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised doubts on their possible return. Mr Obasanjo, who spoke at an event organized by the Staff Club of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Friday, said anyone saying the girls would return was simply telling lies. The programme which was held at the open arena of the staff club, was themed, “An Evening with Obasanjo.” Mr. Obasanjo blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan for trivializing the distress call to rescue the girls on the day they were captured. “The former president heard about the kidnap 8am in the morning of the abduction but failed to act until 72 hours later and by then it was too late,” Mr. Obasanjo stated. “Anyone saying they(Chibok girls) will return is telling lies, maybe some of them will return to tell their story.” According to him, the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last presidential election is a blessing to Nigeria. “We tried, but with Jonathan, it was best that PDP should fail to save Nigeria,” Mr. Obasanjo said. He pointed out that one of the low points of the Jonathan administration was his treatment of issues of importance as politics, particularly that of Boko Haram. On power generation, Mr Obasajo said there had been no meaningful improvements since he left office. “Power is still the same way I left it in 2007, railway is same way and other sectors, it was best that PDP stopped ruling us,” he said. “It was a thing of joy to me that the earlier declaration of 50 years governance for PDP did not come to pass.” Mr Obasanjo, who was in company with the Vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Fadipe and other notable personalities, also took out time to take a swipe at Professor Wole Soyinka whom he described as “an amateur politician.” “Wole Soyinka is a patriotic Nigerian, he is a great man but his opinion regarding politics, he always misses it, I have nothing against him,” he said. Mr. Obasanjo also justified some of the decisions he took on education, saying he would take the same decisions if he had another chance. “I have no regrets regarding the decisions I took in terms of education including removing free food in our institutions. We had 53 institutions when I came in 1999 but as at the time I left we had 150 institutions,” Mr Obasanjo explained. “I prefer to have all persons in schools than to have some few persons simply enjoying free food.” He also stated that he never had a godfather when he contested for president, admonishing young politicians to shun godfatherism and be ready to face hard times in politics. It is no longer a news that three students' union leaders have been suspended by the obafemi Awolowo university management. The closest reason for their suspension is the alleged assault of Prof YK Yusuf. Without really going through what really happened. It is saddening that in Nigerian institutions really setting up a panel is like leaving the accused without a chance. The popular saying " you can't be a judge in your own case seem non- existent in Nigerian varsities. If Prof YK Yusuf has been assaulted as alleged, should the management be the one to set up a panel that we all know the result even before the sittings . Professor YK Yusuf is a top staff and part of university senate, a respected man among his colleagues, now imagine that the Prof was allegedly threatened and those in the disciplinary panel consists of his friends and associates, abeg where will the judgment swing? In favor of YK or Students' union leaders, definitely we do not expect students union leaders to be found innocent, finding them innocent even If they are innocent means shooting management that constitutes the panel in the leg. Little wonder one does not come back from such panels without a scratch . I cannot sentence myself to death over a crime I committed. My point is that even if the union leaders have been alleged to be wrong , isn't it also wrong for the management to be the judge in its own case? Is it not wrong to distribute suspensions like rice and beans? I think it is high time schools look for other punishments even when students are found guilty beyond suspension . Suspension will also be needed but not in cases like this where it should be assumed that even IF students union leaders were guilty you cannot instill culture by suspension rather you riun their life and add to the already polluted Nigerian society. I believe ( except am wrong) that universities or schools are meant to shapen and not to destroy, education is not about chalks and biro alone but something more If you say a particular person has insulted you and because if that chase him out if school, it will not make him better. In the case of the three union leaders, one may be forced to wonder if the suspension of the three can be tallied to their said offence, common! Two years ain't a joke, one may also be forced to say sentiments led to the suspension, the management must have done this to reassure the professor of their respect and support for him and not really because of their readiness to critically assess the allegation . One may even say the university management may have done that to support ASUU and avoid a showdown with ASUU that asked for several punishments for TY and co. In conclusion, it is clear that even if guilty the suspensions have more undertone. It is my believe that schools don't chase away those who need little reforms, schools are not for oppression , suspension should not be for settling scores , of fences should not be a basis to show superiority or use power absolutely. Suspension of TY , Kant and Seun is not welcome, I am not for anyone . If they were really found guilty of assault then suspending them will not improve them rather it will worsen situations " orififo KO login Ori vibe" Moreover OAU mgt can't be the judge in its own case campus editors guild: Suuspension Of OAU SU Leaders : Management A Judge In Its own Case - http://campuseditorsng..co.ke/2016/01/suuspension-of-oau-su-leaders.html?m=1 |
Obafemi Awolowo University slams lengthy suspension on student leaders olanrewaju Oyedeji The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University has slammed lengthy bans on the institution’s students union leaders, for allegedly threatening a professor. The SUG leaders bagged between four and six semesters suspensions. Those suspended are the president, Omotayo Akande; Secretary General, Oketooto Oluwaseun and the Public Relations Officer, Ojedokun Emmanuel. Mr. Emmanuel is a 400-level student of International Relations and had just two months to graduate before his suspension. The suspended students were accused of assaulting a professor, Y. K. Yusuf, in the institution. It was gathered that trouble began when Emmanuel had gone into a class in company with some of his colleagues where the professor was delivering a lecture, desiring to make an announcement to the students, but the lecturer would have none of it and walked them out. The union leaders, feeling insulted, reportedly went to the lecturer’s office at the university faculty of arts building and threatened to parade him round the campus if he failed to issue an apology to the students. When the professor refused to do so, the SUG president was said to have sent a text message to the Vice Chancellor, declaring that the safety of the professor could no longer be guaranteed on campus if he failed to tender an apology for walking out officials of the union of his class. A panel set up by the school’s management to investigate the matter recommended that the students be suspended for three years. Mr. Emmanuel confirmed that they had received the suspension letters, and called on the management to review its sanction. “We have received the letters and plead with notable Nigerians to save Oketooto Oluwaseun, Omotayo Akande and myself,” Mr. Emmanuel said. He denied ever threatening the safety of the professor, saying the university management was using that as an excuse for the suspension. ASSOCIATION OF CAMPUS JOURNALISTS,OAU. PRESSROOM:BLOCK 2 TOPMOST FLOOR,FAJUYI HALL. Email:acjoau2015@gmail.com Our ref____Your ref__ Date_______________________ _____________________________ PRESS RELEASE OAU SU SCHOLARSHIP SCAM OAU SU COLLECTED 205,600 FROM DR FOLA AKINOSUN Some months ago, the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU uncovered a fraudulent deal by the Students' Union Central Executive Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University with Dr Fola Akinosun of Foreign Links. Some facts were established then but the Students' Union denied any sort of involvement with the aforesaid man by denying ever knowing the man even after a fact was established that Dr Akinosun sent the Association of Campus Journalists a text message accepting the association's "thank you message for sponsoring OAU students". While Dr Fola Akinosun must have done all he did in efforts to help OAU students; the overwhelming fact is that the Students' Union lied. Recently, the Association of Campus Journalists stumbled on a document attesting to the fact that Dr Fola Akinosun actually paid some thousands of naira to OAU SU. This time proofs and evidences will be divulged to the general public in order to avoid what happened the last time where the SU were exposed by the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU. A letter was received by Oketotoo Oluwaseun, the Union's Secretary-General on the 23rd of September, 2015, acknowledging a receipt of #205,600 as payment of tuition fees for 8 students in the scholarship scheme, solely paid for by Dr Fola Akinosun. The following students were paid for by Fola Akinosun: 1)Daramola Oluwatunbosun; Civil Engineering, 500level #27, 700 2)Falola Thomas Adeoti; Dentistry #30, 700 3)Amosa Grant; Education, 400level #19, 700 4) Olorunfemi MICHEAL; Law, 500level #19, 700 5) Oyediran Mayowa; Pharmacy, 400level. #30, 700 6)Gbadebo Alfred; Chemistry, 400level, #24, 700 7) Adedeji Adedipupo; Elect Elect, 500level #27, 700 Fadunsi Ibyas; Architecture,500level #24, 700 The above figures totaled 205, 600naira. While one Mr Sam Ayoola represented Foreign Links in interviewing the above named students, it is alarming that such will happen in a country of intellectuals. " Dr Fola Akinosun also confirmed payment of over #200,000 to OAU SU, he said this in an interview with an Online Magazine 'Source': this confirms ACJOAU claims too." Basically, the Students' Union has continued to deny ever receiving any money from Dr Fola Akinosun but ACJOAU challenges the leaders of the Union to provide a counter-evidence. ASSOCIATION OF CAMPUS JOURNALISTS,OAU. PRESSROOM:BLOCK 2 TOPMOST FLOOR,FAJUYI HALL. Email:acjoau2015@gmail.com Our ref____Your ref__ Date_______________________ _____________________________ THE SUSPENSION OF STUDENTS' UNION: OUR POSITION It came to our notice as a rude shock that the Obafemi Awolowo university Management has directed the suspension of the biggest students union in sub Saharan Africa. While we will not love to bore you with rhetorics, we have gone through the press release by the Management and it is on record that no reason was given for tthe decision. We are therefore forced to attribute the suspension to recent happenings on OAU campus. Among these possible reasons which we feel might have motivated this submission by the University's own management are as follows. However, we feel these reasons are cogent but not ample to spuspend he activities of the Union. 1.THE ALLEGED MOLESTATION OF PROFESSOR Y.K YUSUF As regards the alleged molestation of Professor Y.K Yusuf, we believe that the intervention of ASUU and other top management staff is enough to die the matter down. Shutting down activities of the Students' Union is equal to shutting down activities of 35,000 great Ife students. If Prof Yusuf alleged molestation is among the reasons for pseudo proscription of he students union, we believe the decision could be revisited especially when this alleged case is currently under investigationby ASUU 2. THE RECENT LECTURE BOYCOTT AND PROTEST Some few days ago, Obafemi Awolowo university students embarked on a "peaceful" protest to agitate improved welfare. There have been allegations that facilities in halls of residence are dilapidated and need immediate attention. We believe that the rights to peaceful assembly and that of expression are mbedded in the Nigerian constitution of 1999 (as amended in 2011). Therefore, while students of OAU have expressed their constitutionla rights, they should be commented for their consciousness. It should be recorded that similar actions as these took place in some other Nigerian Universities- Unilag, UI, Lautech, etc and it did not amount to the suspension of their Students' Union activities. No properties belonging to the university or private individuals were destroyed in the process of the lecture boycott and protest. 3. THE BEATING OF A PUBLIC BUS DRIVER FOR ALLEGED STEALING Recently, it was revealed that a commericla bus driver from Ife town was seriously beaten by the security committee of Great Ife Students' union for allegedly stealing of stusents' valuables. While we cannot strongly ascertain whether or not the matter surrounding this issue was properly investigated despite the claim by the Union that the said driver had once been paraded for theft, the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU feel that this issue may not be enough a reason for an abrupt suspension of the Students' Union activities OUR RECOMMENDATIONS 1: On Prof Y.K Yusuf versus Students' Union saga, the Association recommends that the Management of the Obafemi Awolowo university allow ASUU carry out the investigation and at the end, the issue be settled amicably as even fathers and their wards do clash once in a while. 2. On the lecture boycott and protest, we recommend that the university mangament should not punish or proscribe OAU students' Unio based on this act in recognition the provisions of the Nigerian constitution. 3. On the public bus driver, we recommend that students union security unit be investigated and those found guilty in the molestation of the said driver be dealt with accordingly. Never should there be a reason why 35,000 great Ife students will suffer for the alleged misdeed of some few persons as this ' misdeed' is not in furtherance of interest of Great Ife students. 4. Since NASU protested some few months ago for the wellbeing of their members among other issues and the body did not receive any jab from the management, the Students' Union should therefore not be suspended for fighting for the interest of the entire Great Ife sthdents since both bodies are recognised pressure groups which should be availed the free hand to thrive. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN CAMPUS EDITORS ....upholding objectivity in Campus Journalism Press Statement: SUSPENSION OF OAU SU; A RETURN TO AUTOCRACY The news of suspension of OAU students union activities came to us as a rude shock. We have been following the trend of activities of Obafemi Awolowo students union of the past few days, we must commend the great coordination of Ife students in exercising their rights and also showing they are conscious. It is really sad that in the 21st century administrative environment, obafemi Awolowo University management has decided to pitch her tent with the hitler age. In any sane assembly, the right to peaceful assembly is never a disputed fact and now that even at the federal level youths are given the platform to air their thoughts, a democratic and responsible leadership even make available ways by which people can make their opinions known, Professor Bamitale led administration has decided to rule without criticism, even Obama does not enjoy that opportunity. In Nigeria when a critic come up, the sitting government will always find a way to frustrate efforts of such critic, we expected that an academic environment should be that of civility and maturity . It is a bad situation that instead of looking for ways of listening to students agitation for better welfare and hostels, Prof Bamitale Omole led administration is busy looking at ways of suspending the institution's students union, in a typical Nigerian autocratic way. We will not be surprised if OAU Management is scared of something. We were baffled and we are still baffled that the university has not come out with a reason why the union was suspended. We condemn in totality proscription of the union, it is a militaristic and archaic way of approaching issues, it is a slap on Nigerian Students faces. It is a common feature for the various varsities in Nigeria to victimize and suspend students using the power with them arbitrarily, we are hoping the OAU management will not commit a heinous error by attempting to suspend activists this time, as all Nigerian Youths will jointly fight this management. Finally, we are pushing that all universities in Nigeria write a joint petition to the President of the federal republic of Nigeria not just for OAU but for the probe of activities of all Vice-Chancellors in Nigeria. Our vice chancellors are looking too powerful to be probed but we challenge the federal government to rise up to the challenge starting with the vice chancellor of OAU. We appeal that all youth bodies/student organizations come together to fight against autocracy that is beginning to dwell in our institutions. OAU Students were clamoring for better welfare and all a responsible management could think of is suspension? It is barbaric. We will fight this cause with all OAU students and we offer our solidarity, this fight is not just for OAU but all Nigerian varsities.
