should use the pedestrian bridge,an altercation occurred and
the policeman slapped the lady in question, the lady

slap before she collapsed”.

NEWS DIGEST – The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has
alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari plans to stay in
power longer than 2019 without conducting an election.
The IMN, popularly known as Shiite group made the
allegation in a statement on its website demanding the
freedom of Shiites leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
The movement alleged that a document from the Nigerian
Airforce (NAF) which was labeled ‘secret’ accused the Shiite
group of planning violent protests.
The statement posted on the website read thus: “The Buhari-
led APC government appears to want to use Islamic
Movement as an excuse to scuttle the forthcoming general
elections and by extension elongate its tenure in office.
Feelers from this appeared when a secret intelligence report
doctored by the security forces was recently exposed
alleging that Islamic Movement was raising a squad to
violently disrupt the 2019 elections.
“The two-edged plot would see that the Islamic Movement in
Nigeria is framed up and projected as violent group, out to
violently disrupt the 2019 elections. This will justify yet
another escalation of violent clampdown on the Movement,
and after some series of false flag operations in its name,
the government will declare the horizons generally unsafe to
conduct the elections, effectively elongating its tenure.”
The News Digest contacted the Nigerian Airforce spokesman,
Air Vice Marshall Adetokunbo Adesanya who denied having
knowledge of any such document.
Adesanya said: “I am not aware of such document. I would
need to find out if such a document exist before I can
respond.”
When the News Digest sent him a copy of the said
document, Adesanya said he could not react as he was not
in town.
Included in this News item is the picture of the document as
released by the movement on its website. See more details via link below https://newsdigest.ng/news/2018/05/06/buhari-scuttle-elections-imn/ |

NEWS DIGEST – The non-teaching staff of Nigerian
universities may resume their suspended strike next Week.
News Digest recalls that the staff, members of the three
unions, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT, had accused the federal
Government of encouraging disparity between the Academic
workers and Non Academic workers in disbursement of
earned allowance last year.
An official of the SSANU who spoke to THE NEWS DIGEST
said the workers under SSANU will meet for a NEC meeting
in Bayero University Kano next Week Thursday and the
meeting will end on Friday where decisions relating to
resumption of strike among st other issues will be raised.
The Union had suspended a three months strike in March to
discuss further with the Federal Government on issues
raised on earned Allowance .
Federal Government through the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris
Ngige signed a Memorandum of the term of a settlement
between the representatives of the unions and the
government which culminated in the suspension of the strike
action in March.
But the unions said the federal government has failed to
implement the terms of the agreement between the union and
the government that made them suspend the strike
action in March. https://newsdigest.ng/news/2018/05/03/nasu-naat-ssanu/ cc fynestboi, lalasticlala |

How Nigerian Special Examination Centres Operate (2) …Victoria High School Principal threatens News Digest Reporter NEWS DIGEST – After the publication of our first report on how special examination centres operate in Nigeria, a lot of media frenzy has gone with other media houses following up on The News Digest report to expose high scale corruption going on using the West African Examination Council (WAEC). It would be recalled that in our first part, we exposed how the centers got answers even before the Examination period. The News Digest visited State Criminal Investigation Department(CID) in Osogbo with four Divisions visited by this reporter to get state of reportage of the incidences. Officers who spoke to our correspondent did so under conditions of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the issue. Our findings show that of the four Divisions visited in Osogbo, only Dada Estate division of the Nigeria Police Force(NPF) in Osogbo has a case relating to Special centers. The official on duty told our reporter that “Just one case has been reported in the whole of Osogbo regarding special centers “ The case was reported to the station in Dada Estate by a group of 8 Students who were duped by a special Center operator. The Students were said not to have been registered for the examination after they paid an undisclosed amount of money to the man. According to Police reports, the man (Names withheld) has been charged to court,The News Digest can authoritatively report. The man it was learnt, promised to take them (the students) to Ilorin for the examination. Our findings further reveal that in the ongoing West African Examination Council Exams, schools in Iludun, Osogbo, Osun state had been complicit in exposing answers to students with evidence gotten by this Newspaper correspondent. A Student spoke to our reporter who acted as an undercover agent related how one of their examinations was free, except for the presence of an external invigilator for about fifteen minutes hindered them from freely going about their malpractice during the Examination. The student whose name would not be revealed in this report told our reporter how they were helped during one of the examinations at Lamo High School, Iludun in Osogbo Osun state “Our Examination was free as we wrote it just like classwork. We were allowed to take in answers and only one external invigilator came once and disturbed us for about 15 minutes.” Our reporter tried to find out why they would be able to carry out malpractice in the presence of the school invigilators, the student dismissed the insinuation stating that all has been settled before the examination. Our private investigations also confirm that the school is complicit in this act as found by our investigations. Efforts to speak with the Staffs of the school proved abortive as none of them was willing to comment on the issue. Further investigations showed that Victoria High school in Osogbo gave out answers to students during the recent WAEC examinations in the school and destroys examination answer papers after use. One of the Students who participated in the act spoke with The News Digest under anonymity and confirmed that they were given answers to the just concluded chemistry practicals in the school. Evidences received by our reporter showed that after the Examination all expos used are usually burned. Speaking to The News Digest reporter, our authoritative source “During Chemistry and Physics practicals, they give us answers and burn the paper passed around after the Examinations. Other examinations sometimes they sit down with us and give us answers” The News Digest reporter also got an audio evidence to nail this act including a copy of the answer which our source did not burn after use. The paper contained answers to the chemistry practical held recently. The News Digest tried to contact the number placed on the school (Victoria High School) website(vchsosogbo.com.ng/ ) and after several calls were not picked , our Reporter sent a message to the number which happened to be the number of the school Director , the reply we got was ” This is absolutely untrue. If you publish any fake news about the school, you will never practice journalism in your entire life”. The News Digest stands by her findings about the illegal activities by the private schools regarding cheating in Examination. The West African Examination Council had reacted to series of media reports regarding high rate of Cheating during the Council examinations across the Country. Reacting, WAEC said “Our monitoring and investigations of the ongoing examination have established the fact that certain school Principals, invigilators, supervisors and candidates who had succeeded in smuggling mobile phones and other electronic devices into the examination hall, snap the question papers after the examination must have commenced and forward to their criminal collaborators who in turn provide solutions to the questions and send to their subscribers via rogue websites, SMS, WhatsApp and other social media,” the statement read. WAEC further said “The question papers for the ongoing WASSCE for school candidates 2018 did not leak as has been erroneously portrayed in the media. “Leakage can be said to have occurred when the question papers get into hands of individuals who are not supposed to have them before the time scheduled on the timetable.” The statement further read “Without any iota of doubt, the Council wishes to state that no case of leakage has been established since the beginning of the examination.” https://newsdigest.ng/news/2018/05/01/busted-special-examination-centres/ cc fynestboi |

" An official of the Joint Action Committee consisting of SSANU, NAAT and NASU Comrade Wole Odewunmi has said the Union has demanded over 65billion Naira from the Federal Government before the ongoing National strike can be called off. Comrade Wole who is the Coordinator of Non Academic Staffs in OAU said this during a Radio program in Osun State recently. He said "Our demand from the Federal Government includes 65billion Naira which is our demand to end the ongoing strike action". The Non-academic Staffs went on strike over a Disagreement on 23billion Naira Academic Earned Allowance shared between Academic and Non-academic Staffs in Nigerian Varsities. It was reported that the Fund was shared in a ratio of 89%-11% between Academic and Non-academic Staffs respectively. The Federal Government had earlier met with the striking workers on December 19,2017 with the Minister of State for Education Anthony Nwuka representing the Federal Government. https://educationherald.com.ng/demanded-65billion-naira-federal-government-end-strike-jac-official/ |
The Non Academic Staffs in Obafemi Awolowo University have said Examinations in the institution will hold as scheduled. This position was revealed by the Non-academic Staffs Coordinator in the institution, Comrade Wole Odewunmi during a Radio program earlier today in Osun State. Comrade Wole said "Basically, the Examination in Obafemi Awolowo University will hold without any hindrance, we will make our Students comfortable and we will do all within our reach to make the place conducive". He however said the Union would not assure 100% comfortability "The Library will still be locked but there would be Electricity and water, while activities will resume in the Health Center". Comrade Wole accused the Varsity Management of going ahead to resume without carrying Non Academic Staffs along. The JAC Strike also said the resumption of freshers scheduled for, March 8 cannot be assured basically because the strike action will commence fully after Examinations must have ended in OAU. There has been speculation on whether the scheduled Examination in OAU will hold as scheduled due to the Non-academic Staffs Strike that has threatened it. https://educationherald.com.ng/oau-examinations-will-hold-scheduled-jac/ |
The current Strike action embarked upon by the Non-academic Staffs in Nigerian Varsities may not end soon as the row over the crisis has deepened, EDUCATION HERALD can report. In a letter sent round to all Chairmen of Non-academic Unions in various Varsities, the Striking Workers ordered that Branch Executives should ensure that all strike resolutions are respected without delay. The letter warned that any Branch that fails to ensure that the Strike is effected will be punished. The Letter read in part "The leadership of JAC met on 16th of January, to review the ongoing National strike action, JAC seeks that all Members do not succumb to pressure from any quarters and to stand their ground with the National strike actions". The letter was signed by Comrade Samson Uguoke, Comrade Engr Sani Suleiman and Com Chris Ani National Presidents of , SSANU, NAAT and NASU respectively It would be recalled that some institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan have resumed despite the ongoing National Strike actions by the Non-academic Workers. The Controversy Started after the Federal Government released a 23billion Naira Earned Allowance to University workers with an 89% to 11% sharing ratio for the Academic and Non-academic Staffs respectively. The striking workers have also alleged that their members have been targeted by Policemen and Men of the DSS. https://educationherald.com.ng/universities-workers-strike-row-deepens-unions-set-monitoring-committee/ Cc fynstboi |
The ongoing Strike by Non Academic Staffs in Nigerian Varsities has crippled the activities of Universities in Nigeria. Although some Universities have commenced Academic Activities albeit under strenuous conditions. With the Disagreement bothering on issues of sharing formula for Earned Allowance released by the Federal Government last year, there seems to be no headway in resolving the crisis across various Varsities as the Federal Government has continued to keep Mum, while the Striking Workers say they still expect an invitation for a meeting to further discuss possible resolution of the issues that led to the strike. The Public Relations officer of SSANU Abdussobur Salaam speaking with EDUCATION HERALD today, said the Striking Workers in Nigerian Varsities are still waiting for the Federal Government to call for another round of Negotiations. He also said the Union is taking her time in waiting patiently for the reaction of the Federal Government after the last meeting of December 19 in Abuja. Abdussobur also noted that the liability on the strike lies with the Federal Government not the workers. A visit to Obafemi Awolowo University, one the Institutions that has resumed shows that workers gather at the University Senate Building daily in continuation of their daily protest in form of the strike action. The Federal Minister of State for Education, Anthony Nwuka represented the Federal Government during the last meeting with the striking workers. EDUCATION HERALD had reported how Anthony Nwuka declined comment when contacted for how soon the issues surrounding the over a month long strike will be resolved. While Local chapters have vowed to continue their strike actions except if the National Body asks that the strike be suspended, it remains to be seen how soon the strike will be called off especially with no clear path on when the Unions and the Federal Government will meet again to continue negotiations. A student in one of the Nigerian Universities Folashade Adeola told EDUCATION HERALD that the strike has caused a lot of harm and not knowing the time of resumption is affecting her “The strike action has affected us and we Plead with the Federal Government to reach a concensus with the workers so things can move on”. https://educationherald.com.ng/jac-strike-one-month-imminent-end-not-sight/ |
Student Unionism is one of the things that keeps the vibrancy and hope of People alive on Campus especially with the decay ravaging our Campuses in Nigeria. issue that is of uttermost importance to the welfare and growth of our society and the nation at large. Student unionism began in 1925 with the emergency of West African Student Union (WASU) and was partly pioneered by some Nigerian students who resided in London. They fought the colonial masters for the rights of Africans. National Union of Nigeria Students (NUNS) inherited ideals of West African Students Union and the student union matched on as a platform of change and of informed activism. The union then enjoyed support from radical intellectuals and academia. The union leaders were purely idealist and fire brands. Under the leadership of Segun Okeowo, NUNS became directly involved in national politics for proper funding of education for Nigeria students. They suffered all manners of maltreatment yet remain adamant insisting they are fighting against the forces of feudalism, parochialism and tyranny in our political system.Shehu Shagari lifted the ban leading to birth of National Association of Nigeria Student in 1980. Many persons are of the opinion that if there were no Student Union, we would have had more decay in Nigerian Varsities than we have it now. Others disagree with the thought. In recent times, South Western Universities owned by the Federal Government seem to have a huge dislike for Student Unionism. Over the years some persons have argued that Student Union leaders go overboard and each the Universities try to bring back Student Unions, the leaders find a way of been violent and end up messing up the whole process. With lots of arguments here and there, one would wonder, who is to blame for all the woes facing Unionism on Campuses in South West Nigeria. In the past five years, Federal Universities in this part of the Country have gone ahead to suspend Student leaders even apart from the Union. If you mention radicalism in Nigerian Universities, you would mention Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan and others, funnily these same Varsities don’t in its sense have Vibrant Student Unions again, with each suspended by their Varsity Management. OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY The case of Obafemi Awolowo University was hinged on bad leadership of the Union with the Vice Chancellor, Ogunbodede Eyitope stating according to news reports that the Union leaders are immature and thus cannot handle the pressure of leadership. Many have asked if suspending the Union was enough antidote to suspected bad leadership especially with the Leadership of the Students Representative Council already getting set to impeach the leaders. One may begin to think of decisions taken that should we suspend every sector of the University with bad leadership, then we may be looking inwards into some bad of leadership in the University themselves. The scenario of Obafemi Awolowo University was fuelled by infighting and allegations of financial mishandling. These formed basis for Union suspension by the University. University of Ibadan Another University, known as the Premier University fell under the heavy hammer of protests by Students, while some say the protests was ill-timed, others acknowledge it’s necessity. The protest was seen as an affront by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka and the University Senate, the Students Union was suspended as an aftermath of the protest, with the Union yet to be reinstated till now. The Vice Chancellor recently was quoted as saying “If any University has student Unions on their Campus, it is their problem, we have our own operations”, underscoring the importance attached to Student Union in the Varsity. University of Lagos The University of Lagos readily comes to mind and Femi Adeyeye is one name that plays to mind. After a protest against poor welfare alleged by the Students, the University Management shut down the Students Union citing unruly behaviors. With the above scenarios, one would continue to wonder, why constant issues with Student Unions in the Universities. Are the Students just interested in shutting down Campus? Are the Students voting for the wrong persons? Looking at this cat and Mouse relationship between students and Management, is Students Unionism a real training Ground for Student leaders? One would wonder if Unionism will not die completely from the South Western Federal Universities. Many student leaders have come out to say, there should be independent Unionism, but will there really be independent leaders? https://educationherald.com.ng/south-west-unionism-federal-universities-dying/ |
There is continued uncertainty over the continued strike action of the Non Academic Staffs of Nigerian Universities as the Nigerian Federal Government has continued to keep mum on the action. This is coming after a December 19 meeting of last year that attempted to settle the issues that led to the strike. When EDUCATION HERALD put a call through to the Minister of state, Education Anthony Onwuka, he refused to comment on the strike action stating that he was in no position to talk on the strike, although the Minister represented the Federal Government during the meeting with the Striking workers held on December 19 in Abuja. Attempts the reach the Executive Secretary of the Universities Commission(NUC) Prof Abubakar Rasheed proved abortive as his line failed to connect. Abdussobur Salaam the Public Relations officer of SSANU had told EDUCATION HERALD that the strike actions will continue as the workers are yet to hear from the Federal Government after the last meeting. NASU, SSANU and NAAT is contesting the sharing formula of Earned Allowances released last year by the Federal Government with a reported 89% to 11% percent sharing ratio to Academic and Non-academic Staffs respectively. https://educationherald.com.ng/jac-strike-uncertainty-government-officials-keep-mum/ |
LAUTECH CRISIS The crisis that rocked LAUTECH was big in 2017 as Students were severally stranded for Months due to the Disagreement between workers of the University and Owner States. The crisis was one of the moments in Nigerian Education that was really controversial and won't be forgotten in a hurry. Igbonla Kidnap On May 25, 2017, days before May 27 which fell on the Children's day celebration, another version of the infamous Chibok girls tragedy played out in Lagos as kidnappers stormed Igbonla Model College » , Epe and abducted six boys from the school. It was definitely a devastating experience for the six students as their captors imprisoned them for two months before releasing them on Friday, July 28 after demanding a ransom of N400m from their Parents. Kaduna Teacher's Competency Test In 2017,the Governor of Kaduna state decided to test the Competency of Teachers across the state, this caused issues as 21,780 Teachers were said to be incompetent after the test was carried out with the state Governor, El-Rufai Nasir announcing that 25000 Teachers will be employed in place of the sacked Teachers. THE Nigerian Labour Congress disagreed with the released scripts stating that they were ridiculous. The Disagreements definitely will remain fresh as it spilled into 2018. JAMB Cut-off Mark In 2017 when you hear of arguments emanating from the decision to peg University cutoff mark at 120,they were very hilarious with several figures including the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka amongst other Vice Chancellors kicking against the Cutoff mark. JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede although came out to clear the air on the marks, stating that Universities are free to set their own cutoff marks but the moments formed the biggest of 2017 Ojo Aderemi/UI Students Union Saga Anyone who followed happenings in the Nigerian Education sector will agree that the crisis in University of Ibadan was really huge as at then as there were Disagreement between the University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor and the then students Union President, Ojo Aderemi. The issues remain fresh but cap the biggest moments of Nigerian Education sector albeit on the controversial side in 2017 More varsities The federal government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the establishment of 12 more universities – state and private. The action elicited mixed reactions as some stakeholders backed the establishment of more universities to cater for numerous candidates seeking admission. Others said it was not necessary, particularly the states that have the presence of federal university and also states establishing additional universities when the existing ones are underfunded. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) described the establishment of new state universities by the Ogun and Oyo state governments as bad politics when the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago- Iwoye and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso are struggling for survival with mounting arrears of salaries, allowances and other staff entitlements. https://educationherald.com.ng/six-events-rocked-nigerian-education-2017/ |
Students across various Universities in Nigeria have continued to complained over harsh learning conditions they have been exposed to, due to the current strike embarked upon by the Non-academic Workers in Universities. This is coming as the striking workers have vowed not to return to work claiming that they are yet to hear from the Federal Government after their December 19 meeting on issues arising from allocation of Earned Allowance released for University Workers last year. For instance in Obafemi Awolowo University, Students have complained severely of the Current lack of electricity in the Academic area of the University and the shut down of the University Library making reading impossible with examination in the University set for January 29,2018. A student who identified himself as Ayomide spoke with Education Herald, he opined that the hardship has made learning more difficult “We cannot read well due to absence of electricity in our Academic area, we now rely on lamps and it has not been helpful” In Obafemi Awolowo University for instance, the Non-academic Staffs have refused to resume with major activities of the University still shut. Same can be said of Universities that have commenced examinations like University of Ibadan with some students who pleaded anonymity saying that absence of the Non-academic Workers has made things not too easy. Recently there were averted crisis in University of Nigeria and host of other Varsities occasioned by the current strike by NASU, SSANU and NAAT. The public Relations officer of SSANU told Education Herald that all those who resumed already are trying to circumvent the Non-academic Workers strike, a move that would not succeed. There are high expectations of resolution of the crisis soon although the Federal Government has not said anything in this effect. https://educationherald.com.ng/jac-strike-students-across-nigerian-varsities-groan-harsh-learning-conditions/ |
The Non Academic Staff Union of Universities has not called off her strike, the Public Relations officer of SSANU has told Education Herald. Speaking with our correspondent Abdussobur Salaam said Universities currently on resumption are only deceiving themselves, he made reference to Obafemi Awolowo University where he said the University Management is only deceiving Students with order to resume “Our strike is still in Full force, some Vice Chancellors have gone ahead to ask Students to resume in efforts to show that Non-academic Staffs are irrelevant but they know that they are only pushing things too far” Salaam further said “In OAU for instance they have fixed examination but even the University Management knows what is been missed with Non-academics Strike on ground, they can go ahead to fix dates for examination but our services are withdrawn already, some of the Universities go on to power their school through Generators which won’t last at all”. On efforts made by the Federal Government in resolving the crisis, he said the Unions are still waiting “We held the Last meeting on the 19th of December but we are yet to hear again from them, we want to believe that they are still waiting for more days to settle down into the new year” Abdussobur blasted Vice Chancellors who are pushing workers to the wall by employing private Staffs to take over works of Non-academics, in his words, all efforts would not last long. Schools like Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan and Couple of others have gone ahead to fix resumption dates and examination dates for students despite the ongoing nationwide strike by the Non-academics. Joint Action Committee consisting of NASU, NAAT and SSANU declared strike action recently to protest what they termed as bias in sharing formula of Earned Allowance released by the Federal Government for the University workers, it was reported that the Non Academic Unions got 11% while Academic Staffs got 89% of the released funds stirring controversy https://educationherald.com.ng/non-academics-staffs-strike-still-full-force-nigerian-varsities-official/ |
By Larrysam on Thursday, January 11, 2018 After Inside FUTA reported activities of of SARS operatives looting Mayowa, a newly-admitted student of FUTA, another student has narrated how he also lost his tuition fee to the men of the Nigerian Police in Akure. The student identified as Tosin, after seeing the news on Mayowa, took to the comment section on Instagram of Inside FUTA to narrate his ordeal and advised futarians to be cautious when paying their school fee. In his narration, he said “the same thing happened to me just yesterday. I was picked up at UBA arakale where I was suppose to pay my school fees by men of the Nigeria police, SARS. I was then driven to around shoprite. “My phone was searched probably to find something to incriminate me, but they didn’t find anything apart from pictures of clients and so on. I was then told to either drop my school fees and go free or they will lock me up for days, and then collect my fingerprints to database, that with that, I will never be able to travel outside the country, because I will be tagged an ex-convict. “I had no choice, I did what I had to do. I was later dropped but without my school fees which one of them claimed it is their right, ‘eto’. I left there and went home to sleep, thanking God I wasn’t killed. I didn’t tell anyone, not until I saw this post. “If you are a FUTA student, use the banks in school to pay your fees don’t go to town to pay. The police will rob you.” The comment has however been deleted on Instagram. When contacted personally, Tosin confirmed the incidence but refused to give further details, claiming that he doesn’t want to trend online for personal reasons. He mentioned that he only wanted to implore students to jettison the decision to pay their fees in town, by using the banks in school. This brings us to two reported cases in two days. https://educationherald.com.ng/lost-tuition-fee-sars-nigerian-student/ |

Idris Mubarak Maibasira is the incubent President of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and currently a 300 level first class student of Economics. He became the Union president at the tender age of 19, making him to be the youngest Students' Union President in the history. In this interview with Hassan Temitope, he spoke lengthly on how he became the union president at that age, amongst several issues including how NANS has become an a body for political "Thugs" Excerpts below; TI: NANS issued a publication of recent that urged ASUU to be consulting the students before embarking on strike, how do you see that? Maibasira: What matters most is that when one makes himself relevant enough, his consent must definitely be ascertained in any major issue, be it strike or not as for NANS. If we should showcase an outright NANS such that we make it highly respected and reputable, nobody will dump us in the dustbin as elements of trash, especially people that we nurse the most, which is ASUU. TI: At 19, you became the youngest SU president in the country. How do you achieve this? Maibasira: The age doesn't matter in whatsoever. I find it difficult to openly say my age but it's the world we found ourselves and I believe anyone that has prepared enough and is competent enough can be a Students' Union President or take mantle of leadership. If you make yourself outstanding, nobody will even think of some frivolous things to degrade you. Although people always try to use that as a weapon against me to termed me childish, buts when you make the bold move your enemies never expect, no matter how mighty they are, they will bow. TI: Do you ever think that at your age, you will be leading mass of students? Maibasira: The truth is that I have always been ready, when I see the need and I will take the lead. I can have another rather negative thought that since I'm not up to a certain age, I shouldn't do this and that. And the effect is, the achievements and changes I've brought will have never been there which I believe my silence would have rather been an unforgivable sin, because I knew how to do but wouldn't do it. TI: Do you think that governance of students unionism in Nigeria is a good sign for future leadership of Nigeria? Maibasira: When the university or any other tertiary institution tells you that you are on a learning process for preparing you to be tomorrow's politicians, they are only weakening the activist in you. It's a Students Union and not a political party that trains politicians, whoever wants to be in politics should pick a party ticket and join there mentorship classes in the mainstream politics. I am a Comrade and I will remain one.. TI: You have said little about NANS earlier, can you tell me your view about the present NANS? Maibasira: They have made themselves agents of political thuggery instead of been bunches of intellectuals they are suppose to be, and this is just because the intelligent ones (students) among us refuses to take part in the activities of NANS and we therefore must suffer from the hardships of ignorance of those vagabonds leading the Union. TI: What do you think is not making the Nigeria legislative arm to sign the not too young to rule bill and what effect does this have to the youth concern? Maibasira: I'm always an advocate of removal of restrictive administrative bottlenecks. It's going to enhance participatory democracy and who knows in years to come, the leaders that will save Nigeria may emerge from those reduced age brackets. By not signing the bill anytime from now, it would be a great unfortunate curse to the progress and development of this country. theinterviewng..nl/2017/09/meet-nigeria-youngest-students-union.html?m=1 CC Lalasticlala

Ever since the Biafra War,many persons till date have not found their family, many persons lost their lives but painfully Ojukwu did not lose his life nor his children. There was starvation and hunger in the land but Ojukwu's immediate family did not experience any if this, far away they were from Nigeria while innocent Biafrans suffered from the initiative of a 'courageous' man. This brings to the fore core issues we have suffered from as a Nation and the need for vocal understanding of our problems. I have always toed the line of the beleive that Biafra is not the solution to the problems facing the South Eastern part of the country. Smart enough,Nnamdi Kanu has taken his family out of Nigeria while many young Biafrans who perhaps want to have a feel of what it looked like then put their lives on the line from time to time. I may be open to criticism but i would call the attention of Kanu to the fact that really achieving seccession is beyond the talk of burning down the country,i wonder deep in me if the "savior" does not understand that souls will be lost, perhaps he is less concerned about any such outcome. Lets take issues back to perspective, the Biafra struggle currently now is borne out of feeling of neglect and economic issues facing Nigeria, while i agree that Nigeria needs to do more for her countrymen, i see desperation taking over Biafra on the long run. The battle is of course fuelled by people who feel they will benefit if secession is actualized, that is not leaving out Kanu who even without Biafra according to pictures online accept people bowing to his feet and lots of other things that characterise even the present day Nigerian leadership,i see more worse when Biafra comes to play. Jokingly, one would have expected a stern Kanu,he wanted Nigeria to burn but just a feel of heat is making him run helter skelter, there have been issues in this country before now, when we lose lives daily,we should retrace our steps. In fighting a battle as Nnamdi kanu poses,he should not leave issues and start attending issues,i have been caught in middle of crisis before now and i tell you, only survivors live to tell the story. While we all know issues facing Nigeria, i look to recall statements by IPOB through their spokesperson Emma powerful : “Arresting Kanu again cannot stop the agitation, rather it will be a very big mistake on the side of federal government and its security operatives because when the security operatives arrested him on his arrival from London in his hotel room in Lagos, it sparked protests and rallies across the world. “Arresting him again will draw the attention of the world leaders and other relevant organisations closer to the quest for Biafra independence. “Therefore, we don’t give a damn, whether they arrest him or not. We don’t bother. Keeping Kanu in or out of Nigeria prison means nothing to us because the restoration effort continues unabated. Having Kanu in prison is always good for the struggle to restore Biafra.” this was widely reported. If perhaps arresting Nnamdi Kanu is no big deal again,so why the fuse? The disrapaging statements shows inconsistency from the acclaimed leaders of the 'battle'. If the IPOB leaders can easily backoff their own statements, they are no different from Politrikcians who will say something to sway people but cannot stand their foot. Mr Kanu should not play on emotions and unhappiness of those who have made up his members, selfish interests may be interesting now but not on the long run. Mr Kanu seems not to be listening to his father too, In a widely publicized interview,Mr Kanu's father advised him to take thins easy and watch what he would say ,although the same father said he was not scared of his son been arrested again " I am appealing to the Federal Government to set Nnamdi free by withdrawing all the charges, because he has not come to kill anybody" he was quoted as saying in a newspaper report. " Yes, my advice to my son is that he should take things easy; he should be careful on the things he will say. I am saying this, because there are people who are experts in distorting facts and what someone says, for selfish reasons. One will say something and they will turn it to another thing to curry favour" the same report said this too, perhaps the father already saw a day like this coming, but nevertheless, Mr Kanu should know that Biafra does not end corruption, Biafra is not an automatic ticket to buoyancy economically too. Agitations that would kill millions are better done in other ways too. C If sincerity is the purpose then, words are the most powerful Olanrewaju Oyedeji writes in from Lagos. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will on Thursday hold a crucial meeting with the federal government. Thursday’s meeting, if held, will be exactly a week since the lecturers refused to show up for a meeting with the government delegation saying such meeting was “unnecessary.” This Thursday’s meeting is at the instance of the ministers of labour and education and was communicated to ASUU in early hours of Thursday, PREMIUM TIMES learnt. Persons expected to be at Thursday’s meeting are the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. The President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, confirmed Thursday’s meeting to PREMIUM TIMES. “We just received the notification of the meeting,” he said in a telephone interview on Tuesday morning. “Until Thursday, that is when we can say what would happen but we have been invited for the meeting.” A National Executive Council meeting of ASUU held last week had reviewed the government’s initial offer to some of the demands of the lecturers. At that meeting, the lecturers resolved to proceed with the strike which commenced on August 13. According to a top ASUU official who pleaded anonymity, the lecturers rejected the federal government’s offer sequel due to lack of “trust.” “Lecturers were not comfortable with the federal government’s offer because previous promises failed,” the source said, seeking anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media. “So, it was better to solve all once and for all, so as not to be deceived again.” The federal government had reportedly offered to pay N23 billion and a monthly payment of N1.5 billion pending the outcome of the forensic audit being carried out by the Ministry of Finance on various universities. Some of the demands of the lecturers include payment of shortfall in salaries, universities to be allowed to manage their internal revenue independently and exemption of universities from the Treasury Single Account. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/242414-ASUU-strike-lecturers-govt-delegation-hold-crucial-meeting-thursday.html |
