kangminhyuksho: You guys have all said almost everything. A few things I learnt about dem Koreans
You can only clearly tell a person's age by hearing their date of birth and even then your age mate will still be considered your senior cos they add a year or 2 depending on the month they are born in
Every citizen has a registration number that starts with their year of birth. So most times when I'm watching dramas, instead of using the age of the characters, I look out for their ID cards so I can find their year of birth
Most people have 2 birth dates recorded cos unlike us here you don't have to register your child's birth immediately the child is born. So some people might be born 1979 but get registered 1980 and then their registration number can either start with 79 or 80 depending on what the parents want which just seems crazy to me lol
A lot of Asian countries do not believe in male circumcision and Korea was one of them but during the late 50s after getting influenced by the American soldiers stationed in their country they started getting circumcised as adults. Till today most males don't get circumcised till they start to attain puberty. (something about the babies being too small for the pain or it being a rite of passage, I can't remember)
Adultery used to be a crime in Korea. You could get jailed up to 2 years. The law changed in 2015 and now adultery is no longer a crime. (yay for me and minhyuk I guess)
Koreans don't believe in life imprisonment or giving the death penalty. They like to form forgiveness, reflecting on your sins and doing better. Oh well
I'm still not sure about abortion rules there. I once watched a drama where abortion was legal and recently watching the first responders, they referred to abortion as a crime so now I'm confused. Did the law change? I'm too lazy to research cos I'm not about to abort minhyuk's baby anyway.
Lovers celebrate all kinds of anniversaries *sigh* 22 day anniversary, 100 day anniversary etc and it is a big deal
Wearing fake designers is basically a sin there.
There are a lot of secret celebrity spouses/babies out there cos when most celebrities start a family they tend to lose their promotional value and a lot of them want to keep working so they hide the fact that they are married or have children
You mentioned something about wondering why they aren't renowned for their beauty products. They actually are its just that the Chinese have cheaper alternatives and are willing to get their products everywhere while Koreans stick to exporting to rich countries. They are a very money conscious society You and their your minhyuk this wedding must happen |

sarang60: Great observations.
In terms of culture, the fact that they believe the dead can 'eat' is interesting and that is why family have their favorite food items displayed on their death anniversary.
As for last name change, most women don't even have to as almost half or more than half the population have the same last name because of this, they have to make sure they are not from the same clan.
Standard of beauty in the society is not great and what is expected of women in general can be a little unrealistic.
The pressure on students to be excellent at all times in regards to their studies and to get a white collar job after getting into the best college can be a bit too much.
The rate of suicide is ridiculously alarming, it should be considered a pandemic.
The significance they place of their blood group and personality traits huge
I will add more when I remember Thanks! I forgot about their dead and how they show respect to them. Thanks for mentioning that. I like it though. And the ceremony they do on the anniversary of one's death. . I guess that may be why. Some women might just be married to a man that has same last name as her . The standard of beauty, the pressure of academic excellence and the rate of suicide is really something to be worried about. It is well. I haven't noticed the blood group thing. That's interesting. Just remembered the marriage compatibility checks . I am surprised that their beauty products are not as popular worldwide as their entertainment industry. |

The things I learnt about South Korea from watching Korean dramas.
I know kdrama is a fictional world where every thing is a world of make believe. However, there are sometimes a mix of reality to a story and we the audience have to separate the real from the fiction.
So these are the things I have learnt:
South Korea is a country filled with beautiful cultures and traditions. I actually started appreciating and loving Nigerian cultures when I started watching kdramas.
Respect is a huge part of their culture. People are addressed and spoken to differently based on their age. The language used for an agemate is different from the one used for an older person, even if the person is older by a year or two.
Drinking is also a huge part of their culture.........though excessively done. But I like the fact that you cannot even have a shot and drive. Their law concerning drinking and driving is different from the US where there is a limit to which you can drink but your alcohol level shouldn't be above a certain limit but in South Korea, they is no alcohol level, just don't have a drink and drive.
I love their attitude towards food. Their food is rich and it's always tempting to me when ever I watch them eat.....and I am not a foodie.
I like how their women don't have to change their last name after marriage. They still retain their father's name.
I am not too sure about this but even adopted children can inherit in a family........which is usually an issue in a country like Nigeria
Bullying is real in South Korea. In their schools and work places. This is heartbreaking.
Their law/justice system favours the rich.
The citizens have too much power in the lives of their celebrities. It's not the companies that cancels a celebrity, its the citizens. Once they cancel a celebrity, companies follow suit.
I hope they don't become 'too American'. I love them because they are different.
I may be wrong in my observations, feel free to correct me and also share what you have learnt about the country.
Cc

The Forbidden Marriage I like this drama so far. Sometimes I think they don't want us to take it too seriously, . I hope they resolve their love triangle quickly. Don't know what is wrong with that royal guard . Trolley I don't understand how a woman who has protected her privacy for years, just trust someone what says she is pregnant for her dead son without any evidence. Her story just didn't make sense so I don't understand why they let her stay. Nobody is even taking about DNA. The moment I saw the girl, I knew she was a fraud. Don't know how far I will go with this drama because I really dislike betrayers. |

I miss my girl seo eun soo but at least I still see her in unlock my boss. I don't plan to watch episode 1 but I wonder what IL Yong and that old woman have to hide. I hope this season will also be as beautiful as the first one. As for go soo oppa, did he really need to grow out his hair. I mean how much hotter does he plan to be. Nawa o, he should pity my fragile heart I don't think you missed much in the first episode. It was basically how he met the ghost that took them to the village. And two people that went missing (were abducted) but one has turned up dead so it's remaining the girl's mother. |

sarang60: I don't agree because even the way they looked at eachother was more than enough. Exactly, that should have capitalised more on that chemistry. Some dramas like the Fiery Priest had really good chemistry too between the leads but because I knew that it wasn't a romance drama and he was a priest also, I painful accepted that they won't be any form of romance. My Liberation Notes went there but didn't take it a step further. Even their kiss scene they did not show it. We just knew they kissed. But their chemistry was really really good. Then end made the whole thing worse. |

kangminhyuksho: Yeah shooting stars had more than usual kdramas. From the main couple to the younger couple to the main lead and his lead actress to the lawyer and reporter I think. I can't even remember
At the end of the day, you guys are still right Sha cos I just remembered the lack of kiss scenes in my liberation notes and thirty nine even though we can't really call them romcoms, they could have still given us better romance. My Liberation Notes really wasted the chemistry of the leads. Hand sef they did not hold. |
TV/Movies › Re: Korean Movies Chatroom by Ovems(f): 9:28pm On Dec 08, 2022 |
kangminhyuksho: Lol we're probably not watching the same dramas Sha or maybe it's cos I always find a logic for why there's not a lot of kisses in dramas I watch. Like with cheer up, my logic is, main couple haven't been together for long and they are in college. I don't think I've seen a college drama with plenty kiss scenes so it's not strange to me. With love in contract, my logic was people have been complaining about pmy doing only romance roles so she's probably trying to cut down on her kissing so casting directors won't keep casting her in the same roles lol. As for good job, I thought well the drama was terrible anyway so the terrible writer wrote only 1 kiss scene. I swear I have all kinds of reasoning for the dramas I've seen haha Lol. I actually understand Cheer Up because they are college students so I am really not expecting much. Yes to Love In Contract. I expected more kiss scenes since it was a Romcom. Lol. She should do another drama then if they don't want to go all in. I am not even talking about a bed scene. Just normal lovey dovey kisses . Was the kiss scenes that much in Shooting Stars? Can't remember. I stopped watching Good Job at episode 4 or so. |

I am really enjoying Summer Strike. It's slow but sweet. I really love the male lead and how he treats the female lead. Waiting for their romance to start. I just hope it won't be "I like you, I like you too", kiss or hug and then boom, drama ends.
One major thing I love about Cheer Up is the female lead.....and the male lead. But the female lead mostly. I love her acting, her dialogues with her mum, and friend. They are usually funny interesting to watch. |
TV/Movies › Re: Korean Movies Chatroom by Ovems(f): 5:36pm On Dec 08, 2022 |
kangminhyuksho: I don't think it's covid, I think most of the writers aren't really focusing on the romance between couples. There are a lot of side stories to tackle and the romance is just like an extra luggage lol But some of them are Romcom na. We expect them to continue with the standard of What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, Goblin, Healer and others. |
TV/Movies › Re: Korean Movies Chatroom by Ovems(f): 5:34pm On Dec 08, 2022 |
kangminhyuksho: Lol I don't see it at all, I think it's the same as it has always been. I mean it's not as if dramas has always been filled with kisses in every episode. 90% of most dramas, we don't get a kiss till episode 8 and then maybe 1 or 2 more in episode 10-12, then from there the couple breaks up for whatever reason and don't kiss again till episode 16. It's like 10% of dramas that really give kisses and they are rare so I guess we're in that rare stage Exactly, but now, we get one in maybe episode 8 or 9. Then another at the end. Maybe like toykathy said, it's because of COVID. |
