What is Pharmacology? Pharmacology is a branch of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences concerned with the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and drugs — chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. Pharmacology is divided into two major areas — “pharmacodynamics” which studies the effects of drugs on biological systems, and “pharmacokinetics” which studies the effects of biological systems on drugs. Note: *Pharmacology is often confused with Pharmacy but the two terms are not synonymous. Pharmacology is a biomedical science concerned with the research, discovery and characterization of drugs WHILE Pharmacy is a health services profession concerned with the application of pharmacological principles in clinical settings (dispensing of drugs and drug information). Simply put, Pharmacology is a science-oriented research field WHILE Pharmacy is a direct patient care practice. *To be in charge of a pharmacy store in Nigeria, you must be licensed by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN). Unfortunately, the license is only given to graduates of Pharmacy. This implies that a pharmacologist cannot run a pharmacy store legally in Nigeria except he/she is also a qualified and licensed pharmacist. However, this does not change the fact that anyone with the financial capability can own a pharmacy store but impliessthat such person will require the services of a licensed pharmacist to run the store. Career Prospects in Pharmacology Pharmacology as a career offers exciting prospects as it is directly involved in the research, discovery and characterization of drugs which are indispensable tools in medicine. Career Paths The various career paths available under Pharmacology include; 1. Clinical Pharmacology: Clinical Pharmacologists study the effects of drugs on diseases, their effects on humans, their interactions with other chemical substances, and how diseases can change the effects of drugs. 2. Toxicology: Toxicologists study poisonous substances, where they are found and how they affect humans. They also study the adverse effects of drugs on humans. 3. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapies are concerned with the development and study of drugs that kill kill cancer cells and microbes without destroying healthy cells. 4. Neuropharmacology: As the name implies, Neuropharmacology ists study the effects of drugs on the nervous system. 5. Industrial Pharmacology: Industrial Pharmacologists are actively involved in the research and manufacture of drugs in pharmaceutical companies. 6. Pharmacology Education: Pharmacologists who go into academics are saddled with the responsibility of training the next generation of Pharmacologists and conducting academic research. 7. Veterinary Pharmacology: Veterinary Pharmacologists study drugs used in treating animals and how these drugs affect the animals. Where Pharmacologists Work Most of the work done by Pharmacologists are carried out in the laboratory. Their major work places are; 1. Hospitals: In hospitals, Pharmacologists are involved in clinical trials and research. 2. Pharmaceutical and Biotech Companies: Here, Pharmacologists do basically two things — research (drug discovery and development) and manufacturing drugs. 3. Universities and other Tertiary Institutions: This is where academic Pharmacologists work. Their primary concern is training the next generation of Pharmacologists and conducting academic research. 4. Civil Service: Pharmacologists can work in federal and state ministries of health, federal and state health/drugs agencies e.g. NAFDAC, NDLEA, NCDC, etc. Here they help in formulating drug policies, regulations and laws. They also conduct research in government laboratories. Remuneration The salary structure of Pharmacologists in Nigeria is not clear as there is not much Pharmacologists in the country. Nevertheless, their salary is expected to be the similar to that of other basic medical scientists (Biochemists, Anatomists and Physiologists). O'level Subject Combination for Pharmacology To be considered for admission into Radiography in any Nigerian university offering the course, JAMB mandates that the candidate possess a minimum of credits in the following SSCE(O'level) subjects: 1. English Language 2. General Mathematics 3. Biology 4. Chemistry 5. Physics This can be in a single sitting WASSCE, GCE or NECO, OR double sittings as combined results are accepted for admission into the course. Bauchi State University, Gadau 3. Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences, Lagos 4. University of Lagos, Lagos 5. Lagos State University, Lagos 6. Novena University, Ogume 7. Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye 8. Peter and Mary Odili University, Port Harcourt 9. Delta State University, Abrams (offers the course as “Pharmacology and Therapeutics”) Looking at the above list, you see that most of the schools are in the South West. This is due to most of the Pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria being located in that region. JAMB UTME Subject Combination for Pharmacology To gain admission into any Nigerian university, it is very important that the candidate has the correct UTME subject combination for the course he applied for as wrong subject combination can lead to the candidate not being considered for admission. As stated by JAMB, the correct UTME subject combination for Pharmacology is — Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Note: Olabisi Onabanjo University accepts Mathematics in place of Physics. That's it on O'level Subject Combination for Pharmacology. WAEC and JAMB Subject Combination for Radiography What is Radiography? Radiography is a collective term for all imaging techniques involving the use of x-rays, gamma rays, and/or other similar forms ionising and non-ionizing radiation to view the internal structure of an object or body. Radiography is divided into two major branches — Medical Radiography and Industrial Radiography. This article centres on Medical Radiography (hitherto referred to as"Radiography" ) as Industrial Radiography is not offered as an undergraduate course of study in Nigerian Universities. Medical Radiography is subdivided into "Diagnostic Radiography" and "Therapeutic Radiography". Career Prospects in Radiography Radiography is a fast-growing and rewarding career with tremendous employment prospects within the healthcare system. As a career, it has high prospects as it is an indispensable arm of modern medical science and the pivot of modern medical diagnosis. Consequentially, the profession has been dubbed "the eye of modern medicine". The various career paths available under Radiography are: 1. Assistant Radiographers — These are Radiographers that have completed their university education in Radiography but for one reason or the other are not registered with the professional body responsible for the regulation of Radiography practice and education in the country they work in. They work under the supervision of a registered Radiographer or Radiologist. 2. Radiographers — These are professionals registered with the relevant regulatory body in the country they practice in. They are subdivided into a) Diagnostic Radiographers; They work in areas that include x-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), angiography, mammography, bone densitometry and nuclear medicine. Medical Doctors rely on precise diagnostic tests run by Diagnostic Radiographers for accurate patient diagnosis. b) Therapeutic Radiographers; Therapeutic Radiographers are responsible for planning and delivering accurate radio-therapeutic treatments to patients using a variety of modern technical equipment and techniques. 3. Consultant Radiographers/Academic Radiographers — These are advanced practitioners with expert clinical practice. They offer (i) professional leadership and consultancy, (ii) education, training and development, and (iii) research and evaluation The requirement for advanced practice is full Masters/PhD level education. The career prospects in Radiography can be discussed under the following subheadings — * Employment Opportunities: In Nigeria, employment opportunities abound for Radiographers as the demand in healthcare and health education institutions is greater than the supply. This is evident in the relative few number of universities offering the course in Nigeria. * Salary and Remuneration: Presently in Nigeria, the average Radiographer earns between ₦120,000 - ₦140,000 monthly. The above figure justifies the profession being described as"lucrative" * Job Security: As stated earlier, Radiography is the "eye of modern medicine". When coupled with the fact that demand for qualified Radiographers supercedes supply, the implication is that in the event of a massive layoff of workers in the healthcare sector, Radiographers are likely to be unaffected. * Future Career Options: Radiographers have the option of advancing their careers into Therapeutic Radiography and/or Consultancy/Academic practice from Diagnostic Radiography which is often regarded as general practice in Radiography. O'level Subject Combination for Radiography To be considered for admission into Radiography in any Nigerian university offering the course, it is mandatory that the candidate possess a minimum of credits in the following SSCE(O'level) subjects: 1. English Language 2. General Mathematics 3. Biology 4. Chemistry 5. Physics This can be in a single sitting WASSCE, GCE or NECO, OR double sittings as combined results are accepted for admission into the course. List of Universities that Offer Radiography in Nigeria Below is a comprehensive list of Nigerian universities that run accredited degree programs in Radiography. 1. Ahmadu Hello University, Zaria 2. Bayern University, Kano 3. University of Benin, Benin 4. University of Calabar, Calabar 5. University of Lagos, Lagos 6. Lead City University, Ibadan 7. University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri 8. Gregory University, Uturu Note: 12 and 13 offer the course as "Radiography and Radiation Science" JAMB UTME Subject Combination for Radiography Having the right JAMB UTME subject combination is critical for admission into Nigerian universities as having a wrong JAMB UTME subject combination is capable of truncating a candidate's chances of admission for a particular course even with an exceptionally high JAMB UTME score. In a nutshell, the correct JAMB UTME subject combination for Radiography is * Use of English * Biology * Chemistry * Physics Summary Radiography is a lucrative and fast-evolving profession regulated by "Association of Radiographers in Nigeria (ARN)" in Nigeria. To study Radiography in Nigeria, you need minimum of credit passes in SSCE in English Language, General Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The correct JAMB subject combination required for admission is — Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. |
