That you don't like my answer doesn't mean it wasn't one. Nigeria can't keep squandering scarce resources subsidizing immediate mass consumption at the expense of longer-term development; it's precisely that short-term pandering that has enabled Nigeria to be left in the dust by the likes of South Korea.

Better that a few indigent people lose out for now on cheap (but utterly unreliable) power, than that the entire nation be kept in poverty in the name of "caring for the masses". The right way to solve mass poverty is through higher economic growth, and that requires a massive investment in the power sector that will only happen if investors can cover their costs.
Nobody says Government should subsidize for electricity. I really wonder where you got that from.

On the contrary, you are asking the poor masses to subsidize for the rich investors by paying more than the cost of supplying electricity which would then be used for facilities expansion and upgrade. After the expansion and upgrade, will the poor masses co-own these properties?

It is totally wrong to believe that the power supply will improve overnight by making the poor to pay astronomical electricity bills for the super rich to expand their business ventures. This is very unethical.

There is also no statistical evidence that the new tariff regime will improve power supply immediately. Will generation, transmission and distribution capacities be expanded overnight with this hike? Why do you want the investors and Government to charge us extra before the improvement?

I agree with you that the power sector is capital intensive. It is also a long term venture that requires the expertise of real professionals and sincere investors. You don't expect to break even after few years of operations. Let us allow real professionals and not politicians to operate our power sector.

The right way to fight poverty is not by making life more difficult for the common Nigerian through exorbitant charges like the unjustifiable electricity tariff hike. The poor people are never to fund the business of the super rich forcefully.

I think the theme of the OP's post is in order.

I once travelled for 3 months last year. On my return, I decided to purchase units for my prepaid meter. I was outraged when I was charged fixed charge for 3 months without any use of energy.

I like the new tariff regime. Just like call units, pay as you go. It is imperative everyone gets a prepaid meter and a policy criminalizing the tampering of the meter to bypass payment.

Power supply has also been consistent. I am willing to support any efforts to maintain and sustain this.
I am faulting his poor or erroneous mathematical analysis. Read my second paragraph and juxtapose it with his mathamatical breakdown. It is very glaring that he deducted the fixed charge twice. (In cash and in unit respectively). That is simply skewed Mathematics.

Aside the fixed charge removal, there is nothing special about the new rate. It is even outrageous to realize that the increment is about 53%. What is the justification?

The fixed charge was a medium of stealing by deceit as you rightly pointed out. There is no justification to pay for what was never used.

To say power supply has been consistent is a matter that is subjective. I have been on 2000 naira credit since November last year. You will agree with me that power supply is not consistent in my neighbourhood.

There is no statistical evidence that shows that the new tariff regime will improve power supply immediately. Will generation, transmission and distribution capacities be expanded overnight with this hike? Why do the investors and Government want to charge us extra before the improvement?

Every rational Nigerian will be happy for any improvement in electricity supply and will also be ready to pay for it. The proper thing is for the stakeholders to improve electricity supply before proposing an appropriate billing system. Anything short of this is milking the masses.
PoliticsRe: Before You Cruxify Fashola, Read This... by Oz4realsss:
At Op,
You should have just defended the removal of the monthly fixed charge only. There is no advantage in the analysis you provided to defend the new tariff.

According to you, a customer that buys electricity worth of 5000 naira gets 217units and 284 units in the new and old tariffs respectively. With respect to the above, the old tariff is better because it gives more units for the same amount of money. You erred when you had to consider the cost of the fixed charge twice (removing it in cash and in unit). That is very illogical.

My concern on this issue is what necessitated the outrageous over 53% increment. Is it that electricity was poorly priced. If it was, when did the investors notice this? Or is it that the cost of electricity supply has suddenly skyrocketed? Anything short of this means the Government is conniving with electricity suppliers to milk its citizenry.

(See the correct mathematical analysis for the assummed 5000naira
Old tariff: (5000 - 750)÷14.96 = 284.1units or (5000/14.96) - (750/14.96) = 284.1units.

New tariff: 5000÷22.96 =217.8units
Older tariff is better cos 284 units > 217.8units)

Nigeria is complex and it takes time for a change of leadership to make pronounced impact.
I am yet to see that interest in his actions. This is his 9th month and his budget inconsistency is being blamed on some unknown mafias. Do you know that about 16.7% of his 4years tenure has been spent and there is no economic blue print yet? Is that the interest you so refer to?

Yes, oil prices are not impressive but he has to wake up to this reality. Was he not aware of this enormous challenge before vying and begging for Nigerians' votes? His approach has been too slow considering the promises he sold to Nigerians. I expected him to set the ball rolling from day one as someone that is aware of the enormous tasks ahead.

Whay mystery is the new Finance minister unravelling? I agree with you that leading Nations is quite complex but only serious leaders can make a mark or an impact. I am yet to see this in this 9months old Government.

What personality does he have that can quench corruption? I agree with you that corruption has plagued Nigeria, but, don't you think he should prioritize governance, leadership and our failing economy while fighting previous corruption? Previous corruption should be fought but not at the mercy of our economy! I would even prefer he faces our economy and corruption leakages in his present Government with this vigor channelled to corruption cases in the past.

Poor title of article. The Economist did not accuse PMB of worsening Nigeria's economy. They merely criticized the administration's FX and Imports Policy.
I disagree with you. The caption of this report is very apt. The last paragraph says it all. It did not merely critize the poor FX administration and Imports Policy, but, went further to emphasize how these are making a bad situation worse through the reduction of import trade and the suffocation our nascent industries.

Bevista:
They spoke glowingly about his efforts to plug leakages to shore up government revenue. They also credited the expansionary budget aimed at infrastructural development and diversification of government revenue.
Although the report supported the administration's budget expansion including the envisaged theft blockage and fuel subsidy removal, the report never spoke glowingly about them.. Rather, the report fear of about $15 billion deficit that may result even with the removal of fuel subsidy and the potential debt crisis that our high interest rate may plunge us into. It further emphasized the likely hindrance the poor FX administration and Import Policy may have on any potential achievement from the expansionary budget. The fourth paragraph explains this in details.

In a nutshell, the report only feels that only the expansionary budget may likely work but the poor policies on currencies may erode any of its potential benefits. And this will make an already bad situation worse. Your inclination that the caption is wrong does not hold water. Infact, the caption of the report is right.

The Aluko dude came with facts of his own despite the one that has been in public domain. We have Fayose and others on tape planning with the military to neutralize APC.
Now, what proof has Fayose or PDP produced to proof contrary?

It amazes me at times. Cos it's in our best interest for these unscrupulous politicians to expose themselves.... But when some gullible lots now rise to defend and even preach their innocent - now, that's fůçked up
Get my point clear except you want me to believe you have problems with reading comprehension. Ifeanyi Uba may not be related to the Ubas you mentioned though they share similar last names. That Chris Uba made Chris Ngige to swear to an oath at Okija shrine is not enough reason to condemn anyone that bears Uba as a last name. That said, there is no where I supported political thieves in my submission. Can you show me one if you think otherwise?
Finally, diverting an argument to earn cheap sentiments can only persuade the gullible. Bringing in corruption when it is not our point of discussion here is a sign of poor argumentative prowess. If I will take you serious again, you will have to take each point I made and debunk it.
