Foreign Affairs › May Day Or When The US Runs Away From one of Its own Greatest Accomplishments by panafrican(op): 3:28am On May 02, 2022 |
Kind of curious the U.S. does not want to honor one of its own greatest historical contributions. When a country is running away from itself, one must wonder why . ======== May Day, celebrated by workers across the globe as International Labor Day, falls on May 1. But you'd be forgiven if that's news to you. While the day traces its origins to an American laborers' fight for a shorter work day, the U.S. does not officially recognize International Labor Day. Like other countries that mark Labor Days on different dates, the U.S. and Canada celebrate their Labor Day in September.
U.S. resistance to celebrate International Labor Day — also called International Workers' Day — in May stems from a resistance to emboldening worldwide working-class unity, historians say. "The ruling class did not want to have a very active labor force connected internationally," said Peter Linebaugh, author of The Incomplete, True, Authentic, and Wonderful History of May Day. "The principle of national patriotism was used against the principle of working-class unity or trade union unity." "The meaning of that day keeps changing," Linebaugh said." https://www.npr.org/2022/04/30/1095729592/what-is-may-day-history |

The war in Iraq cost US taxpayers $ 2 trillion !!!!! And what came out of it ? ISIS and its terrorist branches ! Now the US is about to spend another $ 2 trillion in a vain ( futile, useless, pointless, worthless, nugatory, narcissistic, egotistical, egocentric, haughty , arrogant, boastful, vainglorious ) war in Ukraine. Can the list of synonyms continue on!!!!! I mean, this is crazy. Why not build build 10 million new homes for veterans and homelessness Why not pay the 1 trillion student loan debt that is terrorizing millions of college graduates? Why not subsidize the gas price at the pump so people can pay 99 cents/ gallon instead of $ 4.50 / gallon? Crazy ! 1. A new report from the Brown University Costs of War Project estimates that US taxpayers have paid an average of $8,000 each and over $2 trillion total for the Iraq war alone. https://www.businessinsider.com/us-taxpayers-spent-8000-each-2-trillion-iraq-war-study-2020-2
2. In January 2020, there were 580,466 people experiencing homelessness in America. Most were individuals (70 percent), and the rest were people living in families with children. They lived in every state and territory, and they reflected the diversity of our country. https://endhomelessness.org/homelessness-in-america/homelessness-statistics/state-of-homelessness-2021/
3. Student loan debt is a struggle felt by many graduates in America, and with rising tuition costs, more and more people are feeling the financial strain of a college education. However, that debt isn’t felt in the same way by every borrower. https://www.bankrate.com/loans/student-loans/student-loan-debt-statistics-by-race/
4. Student loan borrowers in the United States owe a collective nearly $1.75 trillion in federal and private student loan debt as of April 2022, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/loans/student-loans/student-loan-debt
5. Roughly a third of the nation's 620,000 bridges — 36% — need major repair work or replacement, a new report finds.
Why it matters: Deferred maintenance, climate change and heavier-than-anticipated traffic are causing bridges to wear out earlier than expected, and engineers say not enough is being done to keep drivers safe.
Driving the news: More than 43,500 U.S. bridges are in poor enough condition to be deemed "structurally deficient," according to the report by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).
Those bridges are crossed 167.5 million times a day. https://www.axios.com/americas-bridges-are-falling-apart-faster-than-expected-24ca1839-f4c1-400e-ae16-a24fa95f2238.html

Foreign Affairs › United Nations Look To Evacuate Ukrainians From Mariupol, FOX News by panafrican(op): 5:30pm On Apr 30, 2022 |
https://www.foxnews.com/world/united-nations-looks-evacuate-ukrainians-mariupol The United Nations on Friday engaged in efforts to arrange an evacuation of Ukrainian civilians from the city of Mariupol.
Mariupol mayor Vadym Boychenko said the circumstances in the city have become dire and that civilians are "begging" to be saved amid Russia's war on Ukraine.
"There, it’s not a matter of days. It’s a matter of hours," Boychenko said.
People in some cities in the eastern European country have heard artillery fire, sirens and explosions. Yet, a senior U.S. defense official told The AP that the Russian attack is slower than anticipated due in part to the strength of Ukraine's resistance.
The U.N. previously ensured its support for the Ukrainian effort to fend off Russian forces during a Thursday press conference in Kyiv.
"I am here to focus on ways on how the U.N. can expand support for the people of Ukraine, saving lives, reduce suffering and help find the path of peace", U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters at the time. |

US Army replaces cake it stole from Italian girl in 1945 The US Army has given a birthday cake to an Italian woman - to replace one that American soldiers stole from her as it cooled by a window 77 years ago.
Meri Mion - who turns 90 on Friday - was 13 when her village of San Pietro, near Vicenza, saw fighting between US troops and German soldiers.
Her mother made her a birthday cake, but it was taken by the opportunistic - and presumably hungry - Americans.
Ms Mion said she would share the replacement cake with her relatives.
"We will eat that dessert with all my family, remembering this wonderful day that I will never forget," she said. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61265618

Foreign Affairs › Zelensky Makes Second Request To Address African Leaders, BBC by panafrican(op): 10:25am On Apr 29, 2022 |
It is kind of curious Zelensky can't understand why we Africans are fed up with Europeans' wars? We lost thousands of ours in the sen-year war (1756-1763), a global war between the France and UK for global dominance . We lost millions in their so -called "Great war " ( 1914-1918 ) Moreover we lost millions and millions in WW2 ( 1939-1945 ). Still those slave masters spit in our faces when we asked for our independence. So why on earth would we again get involved when NATO's actions triggers another conflict ? Even that put aside, why should we support those slave owners ( NATO members ) who unleashed a slavery war on us , raped our women, beheaded our relatives, burned alive or captured millions of our ancestors for three centuries? Russia was not part of those countries who took slaves from Africa. So Why should we fight Russia on behalf of former slave masters ? We would be crazy if we did.
Refusing to understand our decision is nothing but a racist attitude that tells us that we Africans are unable to think for ourselves. Again and again, we are NOT getting involved in that war.

NPR Asia Myanmar court sentences Suu Kyi to 5 years for corruption
April 27, 202212:49 AM ET
BANGKOK — [/b]A court in military-ruled Myanmar convicted the country's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi of corruption and sentenced her to five years in prison Wednesday in the first of several corruption cases against her.
Her supporters and independent legal experts consider her prosecution an unjust move to discredit Suu Kyi and legitimize the military's seizure of power while keeping the 76-year-old elected leader from returning to an active role in politics. This Time, Rights Groups Might Be Less Willing To Champion Aung San Suu Kyi Asia
The daughter of Aung San, Myanmar's founding father, Suu Kyi became a public figure in 1988 during a failed uprising against a previous military government when she helped found the National League for Democracy party.
She spent 15 of the next 21 years under house arrest for leading a nonviolent struggle for democracy that earned her the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. When the army allowed an election in 2015, her party won a landslide victory and she became the de facto head of state. Her party won a greater majority in the 2020 polls. https://www.npr.org/2022/04/27/1094965687/myanmar-sentences-suu-kyi-to-5-years
