The US has only accepted seven Ukrainian refugees since the war began, despite President Joe Biden saying he would welcome those fleeing Russia 's aggression 'with open arms'.

At least five Ukrainian refugees fleeing to the U.S. have been detained in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centers, with one person moved to a detention center in Louisiana, according to Newsweek.

State Department data obtained by Reuters reveals the low number of accepted refugees in the U.S. while other western countries have taken in thousands – and even millions of such asylum-seekers.


One reason Ukrainian refugees are being turned away at the U.S. southern border is due to ongoing enforcement of the coronavirus-era Title 42, which allows migrants to be instantly expelled due to the ongoing health emergency.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters Thursday afternoon that Border Patrol agents were reminded there are individualized exceptions to Title 42 that can be applied to Ukrainians arriving at the southern border.

Revelations of America's low acceptance of Ukrainian refugees come as estimates reveal the U.S. could be just hours away from another wave of mass migration if Title 42 is lifted.

An Axios report Thursday shows 170,000 migrants are waiting on the Mexican-side of the southern border to cross and claim asylum should the policy come to end. Many of these individuals are as little as hours away from the border – while others planning to migrate are within a few-days trip, an official familiar with discussions told CNN.

With more than 3 million refugees dispersed among Europe from Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said 'the numbers are staggering.'

'This is the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II,' Blinken said.

He told reporters that he spoke with G7 counterparts Thursday and that they discussed a coordinated approach to help refugees fleeing Ukraine.

Biden gave Ukrainians fleeing the war hope that they would be able to come to the US, saying on March 12: 'We're going to welcome Ukrainian refugees with open arms if, in fact, they come all the way here.'

Questions are emerging over whether the U.S. will actually take in these Ukrainian refugees, many of whom are fleeing Ukraine to be with family in the U.S., just to be turned away at the border.

Belgian gold dealer Alain Goetz and a network of companies have been sanctioned by the US for allegedly smuggling hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of gold from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The US government says since 2016 Mr Goetz has been trading illegally in gold that has come from Congolese mines controlled by armed groups who often use forced labour or exploit miners.

US treasury official Brian Nelson said that "conflict gold" provided the largest source of revenue to armed groups in eastern DR Congo.

With the war in Ukraine now reaching its third week, the prospect of the conflict spreading into mainland Europe has left nations in the region on high alert. For France, attempts at diplomacy failed prior to the Russian invasion of its southern neighbour.

Yet, should the conflict reach French shores, and Mr Macron be forced to engage with Russia, one senior official claims ammunition would run out in three to four days.

The chairman of the Senate's Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces Committee, LR Senator Christian Cambon of Val-de-Marne, estimated this Tuesday the French army's ammunition reserves were so low, according to some of his sources, they could provide autonomy of "four days" at most.

Adding salt to the wound, Mr Cambon said: "I even think this information is optimistic compared to reality. The most obvious point is the ammunition."

The five poorest countries in the world, measured by GDP per capita, are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Uganda, Tajikistan and Haiti.

One might imagine, then, that these countries are among the top recipients of UK aid. Wrong. The main beneficiaries are, in fact, Pakistan, Syria, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Afghanistan. Not one of the five poorest countries is among the top 10 recipients of British aid.

Last week, during her tour of Africa, Theresa May proclaimed that, in the post-Brexit world, Britain’s aid budget would be used to promote British trade and political interests. That, though, is exactly how aid is already used. The countries that currently receive most British aid are primarily either significant markets, such as Nigeria, visited by May last week, or of geopolitical importance, particularly for the “war on terror” – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria.

The same is true of America, too. None of the poorest countries in the world is among the top recipients of US aid. Most aid goes instead to Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Afghanistan and Kenya, again for reasons of geopolitics and trade.

Nor is it any different with multilateral aid (funds channelled through international organisations such as the World Bank rather than directly between donor and recipient). Again, not one of the poorest countries is among the top 10 recipients of multilateral aid.

Many on the right detest foreign aid, insisting that the money should be spent at home. Many on the left laud it as a means of redistributing global wealth. But aid is not given away as charity – it is wielded as a weapon to boost trade and further political aims.

Half of all international development aid is “tied”, meaning that recipient countries must use it to buy goods and services from the donor nation.
As the USAid website used to boast (until the paragraph became too embarrassing and was deleted in 2006): “The principal beneficiary of America’s foreign assistance programmes has always been the United States. Close to 80% of the US Agency for International Development’s contracts and grants go directly to American firms.”

Aid has “created new markets for American industrial exports and meant hundreds of thousands of jobs for Americans”. Long before Trump entered the White House, USAid was “putting America first”.

A high proportion of foreign aid is in the form of loans, which cripple developing countries through the accumulation of debt. Many rich nations receive more in interest payments from recipient countries than they give in “aid”. Especially since the 2008 financial crash, western governments have exploited their ability to borrow money at low rates by setting up aid programmes lending to poor countries at much higher rates, minting money on the backs of the poor. This is not aid, it’s a scandal.
