heidepaper: This looks positive to me.
The applicant should give a little push. If she hasn’t replied already. Thank the professor and ask if they’ll like to do a short call to discuss a bit further before she submits her application. Tell them you know their schedule is very busy and you’ll understand if it’s not possible. Very polite email. She can list a few sensible things she’ll like to discuss.
Then during the call, she can ask about funding. This is just my personal opinion and what I'd do if I were her.
Great other supervisors responded! The chances of 1 or more working out is quite high.
All the best to her
Ps: the picture you shared has some private info on it. I showed her your message, and she says she would do just that ie pushing for a short call to discuss several needs. Thanks bro |

Lekiboboe: Ok then, in that case , while waiting to know about the full assurance of funding from the Prof., I will advice she do more research & get across to Profs. of other skools, just in case the Prof. respond With the unexpected (No Funding). But she can be hopeful she gonna get the funding from Queens Univ.
The reason for all of this is to make sure SHE DOESN'T PUT ALL HER EGGS IN ONE BASKET
All the best to her Thanks boss. Fortunately, she has got interest from two other professors although in different schools, with a different research interest. She would go on with those applications as well. I would keep you guys abreast of any development. A sincere appreciation to you all once more. |

heidepaper: Hmmm. This is a tricky situation. She needs to be sure this supervisor has accepted her! It should be clear. A supervisor who has accepted you would want to make contact with you, and even assist you with your application sometimes. If she can share the supervisors reply here, things will be clearer.
If I were her, I’d keep looking for other professors and not fully rely on this one.
Also she should check the program’s website for available scholarship and also send an email to the program assistant/advisors. They know everything about scholarships
Cheers I thought the same as well. But fortunately she has made contact to other researchers in other schools, and two have declared a willingness to supervise her although in a different research area. Find attached her response, and deduce for yourself if it's actually in the affirmative.

Thanks mate. Your response was quite invaluable. Like you said, not all supervisor requests for an interview. Hers seem to be fine with just the approval and shared research interest. She would follow up with the enquiries on funding, and I will update you guys as it progresses. Cheers JustMellow: Hello PanicButton,
Its good to know that the information from thread proved resourceful.
When its comes to funding after a supervisor has accepted to supervise the student, the supervisor nominates the student to the department for any available or existing funding opportunity whether or not the supervisor have enough available funding as at the time of accepting the students.
Given that funding is an essential part of the program and for the supervisor to have willingly accepted the said person without any warning of no available funding, then it means the person would get it. There is no harm to request for the availability of funding from the supervisor. It may escape the supervisor to mention it to the said person. So, its right to request or enquire about it.
Not all supervisors advise or interview their research students via video app prior to acceptance though its a common practice with some. Most supervisors are conservatives. To be a TA or RA, aside the funding, the student must be proactive enough to enquire about availability. On some notes, some supervisors offers the position with question especially for those students interviewed by supervisors.
It will be only right if the said person go through the list of the Profs past and current students and reach out to them. This way, there would be enough insight on how to tailor any research work to suit that of the supervisor. Don't do too much but doing it right is all that counts if the supervisor is to trust and open the lab to a student.
The process of funding comes with different experience from respective supervisor, department and institution. Also, the person should also check with the department if there is still funding available, as the requirements or process for funding from the department may be entirely different from that of individual supervisor.
All the best |

Most definitely. But the supervisor has shown less interest in having an interview with her, which is quite unconventional. Only gave her approval, and bade her success in her application. I will update as it progresses, and seek your input where we lack knowledge. Thanks once more for the effort you put into this. Lekiboboe: You are welcome PanicButton,
As far as the Prof. has accepted her without any protest, then there is no specific period on when to ask about the topic of funding.
By the way, the content in the link u posted https://www.queensu.ca/geographyandplanning/mamscphd/funding-awards justify why she is at liberty to ask the prof. about the availability of funding, cos in the link, its very clear funding is available for the thesis-based masters in Geography & Planning @ Queen's University
In case the Prof. ask to have an Interview Session with her do ask for some guide here in the forum, so she can have an overview of the meeting/interview expectations and some questions she can/should ask the Professor to show her research curiosity,
Best Wishes to her!!! |
Travel › Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 17 by PanicButton: 12:01pm On Oct 28, 2020 |
Hi heidepaper, I appreciate your feedback. Hers is particularly unconventional because the professor didn't schedule any interview. She only gave her approval, indicated she liked the topic because it was in line with her research area, and bade her success in her application. She will begin the application process, but also reach out to the program coordinators for more enquiries availability of funding. Thanks once more. heidepaper: Congratulations to you friend. I’m glad it worked out.
Usually the professor will organize an interview immediately after accepting the student to see the vibe and discuss issues. The professor would most likely talk about the funding at this interview.
At least this is how mine was. After the acceptance via email, an interview was fixed immediately. The professor talked about the funding there.
If the professor doesn’t talk about it, the applicant can then ask. The professor’s funding might be enough to cover the period of studies. If it isn’t, she can mail the program assistant / advisor to ask for findings available and she can also check the programs website. It’s usually stated there.
All the best |

Lekiboboe: 1) ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS & OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD/NOT DO Do not talk about funding unless the Prof has accepted you. Personally, i would check the school funding package before I contact any Prof in that school because no Prof gives money from their private pocket
Source: https://www.nairaland.com/5233221/canadian-student-visa-thread-part/493#86085388
In a Nutshell, since a Prof. has agreed to supervise her, that means she has bin accepted, so she's at full liberty to ask if funding is available.
2) The Professors are mostly busy (as you can imagine, teaching and all), so they need some outstanding students to do this research with them. The students (Research Assistant) will work on the Professor's research & funded through the research grant.
This funding (in most cases) will be enough for her. It can also be combined (depending on each school policy) with Teaching Assistant (where she will assist Prof. in teaching a particular course & get paid for it). This way, she works with the Professor, get paid & also get her MSc.
Also she's at liberty to ask for all of this from the Prof.
3) It depends on her, she can , and she can also work on her own research work but it should have a touch/Component of the Profs. Existing Project or Research areas. In short, she and the Prof. Should share common goal but a prof. would love some diversity.
Now that' she's accepted, she can ask questions on anything she wants to know or not clear of, no need for her to be scared, a Prof. likes an Inquisitive Research Student
By the way, did the PROF schedule any form of Online Interview via (Skype/Zoom) with her ? Cos that's the platform they use to communicate with students they are interested to work with & also a medium for the student to ask any question.
Do await more response to you questions....... Thanks for such a detailed response. The professor has not arranged any interview yet. She only acquiesced to her request yesterday, and she is thinking of the appropriateness of broaching the topic of funding at such an early stage. Hence, the quest for clarity from guys here. Your response has done justice to my question. Thanks mate |

Hello @heidepaper @lekiboboe @justmellow, If you guys could recall, I expressed worry on the inability of one of my friends to secure a supervisor for her MSc program in Geography. Thanks to your assistance and words of encouragements, a researcher from Queen's university has indicated a strong interest to supervise her project. Although she could afford to fund herself to a degree, but receiving some amount of financial assistance will go a long way for her. Now the question is: 1. Does she wait until she secures admission before she applies for departmental funding. They indicated that funding is available https://www.queensu.ca/geographyandplanning/mamscphd/funding-awardsIf she decides to be a research assistant or teaching assistant, will she have to apply formally? 2. How does she approach this subject with the supervisor. She only says she is willing to supervisor her project, without any mention of funding. 3. Will it be in her best interest to work on one of the supervisor's existing project? Thanks as I await your meaningful contributions. |

heidepaper: Hello PanicButton, Sorry to hear about your friend. I had a taste of what she’s going through. I got into a thesis-based MSc and I can assure you it’s not always easy. It wasn’t for me.
Getting constant rejections breaks your spirit. I gave up at a point. And one day, in my sad state, I sent a subpar email, and that was the one that got me a supervisor.
My point is persistence is key! She should pick up herself and keep trying. She should try other schools and more supervisors. Make sure her proposed project matches with what the supervisor is interested in and working on. She should keep her email short and straight to the point. They don’t have time to read long emails.
A format to try in contacting supervisor •Greetings (1 line) Thanks for the encouragement. I will forward your message to her. You guys have been tremendously helpful. |

Getting a Supervisor for MASTERS in CANADA is like a full time job, most esp. for international students, too some extent that over 15 professor is not enough, av seen a guy who mailed like 60 professors, it was like 3 Supervisors he got a Positive Response from.
So she shouldn't be sad and worried, she should rise up and refire...
She should Contact more Profs. cos there are tons of schools offering Masters in Geography in Canada
The link below has over 40 Canadian schools for Masters in Geography, she should google & visit the website of the skools, check staff profiles of the Geography Dept. of the schools, and check research areas interests and Contact (e-mail) of the professors in Geography, am sure she would get substantial number of PROFs to mail.
She should make sure her Research Interest in Geography matches the the PROFS. Research areas.

JustMellow: Hello PanicButton,
Your friend should check for M.sc Soil Science in Manitoba or some other schools. Fairly standard isn't good enough. If her publication is related to soil science then good. In another situation, the said person could draft maybe a 14 page unpublished journal related to soil science as an ongoing research work. Encourage the person not to relent, as this is the best time to search for supervisor ahead of Fall 2021.
All the best Thanks very much for your response. I will convey this message to her. |

Hi everyone,
Great job so far from the contributors on this forum. My friend is quite frustrated because she believes her efforts isn't yielding the desired result. Firstly, I want to pose this question. Is it usually this hard and tedious to gain admissions for a masters program? She has written to over 15 supervisors in various schools but yet, no response from them whatsoever. I proofread her emails to these supervisors, and suffice to say that it is fairly standard in composition. She has a good profile; an upper second class honours, a research published in a reputable journal, and a good academic background. Her first degree was in geography, and intends to further her studies with a postgraduate degree in geography. Can someone advise on areas of improvements, or tidbit of information that may assist her. She is getting worried and sad. |

Nonsense and ingredients. They have abdicated their responsibility of job creation to AfDB. The ultra-cluelessness of this regime is alarming. Alas, we can only suffer and scream in silence, rant on social media, engage in tribal, instead of class war, but at the end, the vicious circle of inactions continues, and we are perpetually left to suffer for it. |
Romance › Re: Is My Husband Cheating? by PanicButton: 12:55am On Sep 03, 2020 |
Rather than being suspicious, have a heart to heart conversations about the issue. Marriages fail due to communication or lack thereof. Only by talking to him will you be able to ascertain his worries, fears or withdrawals. Dont be blinded by the macho personality we put up. On the surface, it bolsters our appeal as men due to societal conditioning. Thus our predilection in concealing our problems. This in turn inadvertently reflects poorly on our relationships with our women.
He may or may not be cheating, but my advice is; relieve him of his worries by treating him like your king for a day, and listen to him talk about his problems. His first. Console, reassure or encourage him on whatever those things are. Afterwards, apologise for not having the presence of mind to realise his ordeals. Then watch him magically want to be more loving and gracious to you. Your problem is half-solved. Cheers |

For my height 6'4, I actually prefer girls who are at least 5'10, but unfortunately they are quite rare to find, especially in Abuja. Shorter girls always and still come my way because of the attractiveness of my height, and sundries. That notwithstanding, my appeal for a taller woman is unwavering. For men below 6'0, they will have less of an issue with the height of a woman unless she is considerably shorter or taller. Admittedly it can be quite difficult for a lady with a height over 5'7. I know this because, my elder sister is 5'11 and complains as well about the challenges inherent in seeking something meaningful with taller men. |
