CelebritiesA Review Of Tiwa Savage’s Water & Garri EP by Parizz(op): 8:26am On Aug 27, 2021
Nigerian multiple award-winning artist Tiwa Savage returns with a brand new extended play “Water & Garri. This comes less than a year after the release of her critically acclaimed third studio album “Celia”.

Water & Garri, a five-track body of work features Grammy Awards winner and veteran rapper, Nas, singer Brandy, the Nigerian underground artist Rich King and Alte singer and soul music stunner, Tay Iwar.

Since her return to Nigeria in 2012, Tiwa Savage has raised the bar for female artists. She embodied the almost frowned on sex symbol attribute in the music industry, her music is filled with flirting words and expressions. No wonder when she called herself African bad gyal, no one disputed the assertion.

Garri is a staple food among Nigerians, water is used to take or make Garri. The title as used in this context refers to her mashed style and global collaboration.

She sticks to her heartfelt style in the course of making this album.

Tiwa Savage infused Rnb/Soul with Afro-fusion. The end product is a 19 minutes run of music with themes detailing heartbreak, love, hard work, perseverance, etc.

Nas and Rich King were on the opening track “Work Fada”, the pensive and reflective song preaches hard work and perseverance with Nas almost going preachy in his thought-provoking verse.

The six minutes long track is the perfect opener to the avarde garde album, who opens an EP with this type of lengthy play?

Only Tiwa Savage could do such, the theme is distinct and it’s a well-calculated risk.

In 2016, Tiwa Savage’s marriage with talent manager Teebliz hit the rock. Five years later, she seems set to speak her truth. She reveals a little on the Interlude on her last album—Celia. On Water & Garri, Tiwa Savage dedicates two tracks to that ugly incident.

Ade Ori is a soft-light take on past relationships/marriage. She is now independent while she is hopeful about future handling. The lyrics drip with pain and regretful lines.

Tale by Moonlight was a popular weekly storied program on national television. Tiwa Savage details her fairy tale love expectations on this soulful 90s house music. Even though she flirts and gushing about the guy, she is cautious. Amaarae’s whispery vocals compliment Tiwa Savage’s flirt takes.

Seven years ago, American artist Brandy visited Nigeria. At a press conference before her performance at Classic FM Valentine show, she revealed she loved Tiwa Savage’s vocals, she liked it to a 14-year-old.

Unknown to her, Tiwa Savage considered the Grammy Winner her role model and one of the reasons she is into music.

When they finally collaborate on “Somebody’s Son”, it is a perfect blend of two songstresses. They complement one another, Brandy even sings in Yoruba. This track is one of the up-tempo songs on
the EP. Its production is filled with Drums and mellow strings. Somebody’s son retains the themes of Ade Ori: it pleads for reciprocal love.

Tay Iwar and Tiwa Savage jointly closed the EP with a rollercoaster of deep expressive expressions. The horn-filled disco makes it sounds like a potential track for a Friday night out.

Veteran producer Pharell Williams called this project a classic but the fans failed to realize his caveat of it not becoming commercially viable. Tiwa Savage is unbothered if her recent promotional talks are anything to go by.

Water & Garri explores Tiwa Savage Rnb/Soul forte with an infusion of Afro-fusion, the EP is a dart between hope and despair.

The production is pristine, however, the songwriting is underwhelming.

The featured artists almost overshadowed her.

Although it’s obvious that this project is destined for the international market, the collaborations could have been lesser.

Politics450,000 Graduates To Get N30,000 Monthly Under Buhari’s Poverty Programme by Parizz(op): 4:40pm On Aug 24, 2021
Four hundred and fifty thousand graduates will receive N30,000 each month as President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime ramps up its poverty programme’s efforts to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

The Federal Government on Monday in Abuja inaugurated the 510,000 N-Power ‘Batch C stream 1’ across the country.

In her keynote address at the inauguration, Sadiya Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, congratulated the successful beneficiaries, saying that the N-Power Batch C was divided into two streams (Stream C1 of 510,000 beneficiaries and stream C2 for 490,000 others).

She noted that under Batch C1, 450,000 would benefit under the graduate component, while 60,000 beneficiaries would be under the non-graduate component.

“Today, we are here to inaugurate the N-Power Batch C1. The N-Power graduate volunteers are entitled to a monthly stipend of N30,000 for a period of one year. The non-graduate beneficiaries are entitled to N10,000 monthly stipends for a period of nine months,” revealed Ms Farouq. “All beneficiaries are granted an appropriate starter pack for their trade to enable them to start their businesses in their chosen trades. By the special grace of God, I hereby flag-off the N-Power Batch C1 for the 36 States and FCT.”

She stressed that the ministry was committed to achieving the National Social Intervention Programmes (NSIP) strategic objectives.

Also speaking, information minister Lai Mohammed stated, “It avails the Nigerian youths the opportunity to acquire skills, to enhance their lives, and even create employment for others. I have no doubt that the lessons learnt in Batch A and B would be brought to bear in Batch C to achieve President Muhammadu’s Buhari vision of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.”

Similarly, Edward Kallon, the UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, said the onboarding of the N-Power Batch C stream 1 was another “milestone achievement” by the government towards lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the NSIP, Umar Bindir, stated that since 1960, the different poverty alleviation programmes of the federal government had remained “only at a programme level.”

PoliticsDozens Of Boko Haram, ISWAP Terrorists Killed: MNJTF by Parizz(op): 7:37am On Aug 23, 2021
Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) say they have killed scores of Boko Haram and the Islamic States West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in the ongoing clearance operations around the Lake Chad region.

The MNJTF spokesman Muhammad Dole disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Ndjamena, Chad.

Mr Dole said the “renewed vigour and resilience” of the forces to flush out the remnants of the terrorists around the fringes of the Lake Chad region had continued to yield positive results.

He added that the troops of Sector 3 in Monguno repelled an ambush by the terrorists while conducting routine patrols along Gajiram general areas in the Gambari axis.

According to him, the troops killed four insurgents while many fled with gunshot wounds during the encounter. One soldier was injured in the attack.

“The items recovered are three AK47 rifles, 10 (7.62mm) special rounds, one 3HG, one magazine carrier, assorted drugs, and one hair comb, among other items,” said Mr Dole. “During his recent familiarisation and operational visits to sectors levels, the Force Commander of MNJTF, Maj.-Gen. Abdul-Khalifah Ibrahim, charged the troops to maintain the tempo and adopt an aggressive posture in dealing with insurgents to deny them freedom of action.”

EducationABU Students Pay N90 As Hostel Fees: Spokesman by Parizz(op): 1:13am On Aug 23, 2021
Auwalu Umar, spokesman for Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, says students of the institution pay N90 per bed-space in the hostels, a fee that has remained fixed since 40 years ago.

Mr Umar said in spite of the ridiculously low amount being charged, the institution was able to provide hostel to 35 per cent of its over 55,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

He said that as part of efforts to complement the efforts of the institution, a private firm, BUA Group, and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), had assisted in constructing additional hostels in the university.

But Abubakar-Sadeeq Ali, President, Students Representative Council (SRC), said though N90 was the fee charged for bed-space, there was another N7,000, being charged for ‘hostel maintenance’.

A female undergraduate student who spoke on condition of anonymity, said most of the rooms were always congested.

The student, who resides at Suleiman Hall within the main campus, said a room of four students hosted up to eight people.

“A room meant for two students hosts about five people, while a room meant for eight students accommodates between 12 and 13 people,” she added.

According to her, some students sub-let their bed-spaces, charging between N15,000 and N35,000, depending on the room and the hall.

Meanwhile, the private sector is giving a helping hand in the construction of hostels to complement the effort of the
management of the institution.

One of such is owned by a non-governmental organization, ‘Near Foundation’.

Foreign AffairsThe War Is Over, Taliban Declares by Parizz(op): 10:39am On Aug 16, 2021
President Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Sunday as the Islamist militants entered the capital virtually unopposed, saying he wanted to avoid bloodshed, while hundreds of Afghans desperate to leave flooded Kabul airport.

“Today is a great day for the Afghan people and the mujahideen.

“They have witnessed the fruits of their efforts and their sacrifices for 20 years,” Mohammad Naeem, the spokesman for the Taliban’s political office, told Al Jazeera TV.

“Thanks to God, the war is over in the country,” he added.

It took the Taliban just over a week to seize control of the country after a lightning sweep that ended in Kabul as government forces trained for years and equipped by the U.S. and others at a cost of billions of dollars, melted away.

Al Jazeera broadcast footage of what it said were Taliban commanders in the presidential palace with dozens of armed fighters.

Naeem said the form of the new regime in Afghanistan would be made clear soon, adding the Taliban did not want to live in isolation and calling for peaceful international relations.

“We have reached what we were seeking, which is the freedom of our country and the independence of our people,” he said, adding: “We will not allow anyone to use our lands to target anyone, and we do not want to harm others.”

A Taliban leader told Reuters the insurgents were regrouping from different provinces, and would wait until foreign forces had left before creating a new governance structure.

The leader, who requested anonymity, said Taliban fighters had been “ordered to allow Afghans to resume daily activities and do nothing to scare civilians”.

“Normal life will continue in a much better way, that’s all I can say for now,” he told Reuters in a message.

Central Kabul streets were largely deserted early on a sunny Monday as waking residents pondered their future.

“I’m in a complete state of shock,” said Sherzad Karim Stanekzai, who spent the night in his carpet shop to guard it.

“I know there will be no foreigners, no international people who will now come to Kabul.”

The militants sought to project a more moderate face, promising to respect women’s rights and protect both foreigners and Afghans.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called for the Taliban to uphold human rights and said the world was watching: “It’s going to be all about the actions, not the words.”

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said early on Monday that all embassy personnel, including Ambassador Ross Wilson, had been transferred to Kabul airport, mostly by helicopter, to await
evacuation and the American flag had been lowered and removed from the embassy compound.

Hundreds of Afghans invaded the airport’s runways in the dark, pulling luggage and jostling for a place on one of the last commercial flights to leave before U.S. forces took over air traffic control on Sunday.

“This is our airport but we are seeing diplomats being evacuated while we wait in complete uncertainty,” said Rakhshanda Jilali, a human rights activist who was trying to get to Pakistan, told Reuters in a message from the airport.

U.S. forces managing the airport fired into the air to stop Afghans surging onto the tarmac to try to board a military flight, a U.S. official said.

Dozens of men tried to clamber up onto an overhead departure gangway to board a plane while hundreds of others milled about, a video posted on social media showed.

The Pentagon on Sunday authorised another 1,000 troops to help evacuate U.S. citizens and Afghans who worked for them, expanding its security presence on the ground to almost 6,000 troops within the next 48 hours.

More than 60 western countries, including the U.S., Britain, France, and Japan, issued a joint statement saying all Afghans and international citizens who wanted to leave must be allowed to do so.

Western nations, including France, Germany, and New Zealand said they were working to get citizens as well as some Afghan employees out.

Russia said it saw no need to evacuate its embassy for the time being while Turkey said its embassy would continue operations.

In a Facebook post, Ghani said he had left the country to avoid clashes with the Taliban that would endanger millions of Kabul residents.

Some social media users branded Ghani, who did not disclose his location, a coward for leaving them in chaos.

Many Afghans fear the Taliban will return to past harsh practices in their imposition of sharia religious law.

During their 1996-2001 rule, women could not work and punishments such as stoning, whipping, and hanging were administered.

Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, and expressed particular concern about the future of women and girls.

In Washington, opponents of President Joe Biden’s decision to end America’s longest war, launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said the chaos was caused by a failure of leadership.

Biden has faced rising domestic criticism after sticking to a plan, initiated by his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, to end the U.S. military mission by Aug. 31.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell blamed Biden for what he called a “shameful failure of American leadership”.

“Terrorists and major competitors like China are watching the embarrassment of a superpower laid low,” McConnell said.

Naeem said the Taliban would adopt an international policy of two-way non-interference.

“We do not think that foreign forces will repeat their failed experience,” he said. (Reuters/NAN)

And Buhari is fighting corruption
PoliticsCourt Orders Interim Forfeiture Of N241m, Allegedly Diverted By Buhari’s SSA by Parizz(op): 11:28am On Aug 14, 2021
Justice Nicholas Oweibo, of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos yesterday ordered the interim forfeiture to the Federal Government, the sum of N241milion allegedly diverted from the office of the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Justice Oweibo, also ordered the forfeited Real Tower Centre Shopping Complex at Plot 1121, Ekukinam Street, Utako District, Cadastral Zone, Abuja, to the Federal Government. The judge’s order was based on an ex-parte application filed and argued by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

Oyedepo told the judge that the N241million was warehoused in two banks in the sums of N65million, N61million, N50million and N65million.

The EFCC said its intelligence showed that the Abuja property was purchased with funds furtively diverted from SDG, office of the SSA to the President, where Mr. Abdulsalam Bawa is a Principal Accountant.

The Commission fingered Bawa, as the key suspect, adding that the diversion was perpetrated in grand conspiracy with some SDG staff.

It also linked three firms, Kouchdim Unity Nigeria Ltd and Lankass Global Ventures, to the diversion.

Justice Oweibo adjourned the suit marked FHC/L/CS/90/2021 till September 6, 2021 for final forfeiture proceedings.

Oyedepo’s application was supported by a four-page affidavit of urgency deposed to by an EFCC operative, Ebunoluwa Amusan.

Amusan averred that he was assigned to investigate the “damning intelligence report received by the EFCC by some concerned citizens in respect of abuse of office, diversion of funds and monumental fraud perpetrated by some officers of the Sustainable Development Goals, office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President.”

The intelligence indicated that monies were diverted to some companies owned by some suspects.

“Our investigation revealed that one Abdulsalam Bawa, the key suspect is a signatory to two (2) corporate accounts where monies from the Agency and those meant for other organisations for projects were diverted to these companies’ accounts, and then further diverted to meet the suspects selfish ends.

“Investigation carried out so far revealed that Bawa is not a shareholder nor is he listed as shareholder in any of these companies; Kouchdim Unity Nigeria Ltd and Lankass Global Ventures, but he is signatory to the companies’ accounts.

“Investigation revealed Remittal inflows traced from the Central Bank of Nigeria, meant for other organisations and for projects were traced to the suspect’s account personal and corporate accounts viz: Lankass Global Ventures and Kouchdim Unity Nigeria Ltd.

“The above mentioned companies alongside their alter ego were fraudulently used to divert funds from government coffer and used to purchase the property sought to be attached.”

The deponent further averred that “the Principal Accountant, in cohort with other staff of the SDG laundered and retained various sums of money through companies and individuals who made
payments for the said property sought to be temporarily attached.

“So far, we have traced and discovered a landed property acquired with proceeds of the alleged diversion of public funds and criminal breach of trust by Mr. Abdulsalam Bawa.”

PoliticsPower Projects: FEC Approves $2.5m, ₦498.2 Million For 4 Plants by Parizz(op): 8:50am On Aug 12, 2021
THE Federal Executive Council, yesterday, approved a total sum of $2,541,689 and N498,230,281 for four projects in the Ministry of Power.

The Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, stated this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the First Lady’s Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister, flanked by his counterparts from the Ministries of Works and Housing, Environment and Information an Culture; Babatunde Fashola, Muhammed Mahmood and Lai Mohammed, respectively, provided details of the contracts.

He said: “The Federal Ministry of Power also received the blessing of the Federal Executive Council by giving four approvals for our contracts. One is the supply and installation of motorised portable hydraulic compressor for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, in favour of Messrs Intern Equipment Nigeria Limited in the sum of US$502,950 plus N15,800,000.

“The second approval was also received for the award of the contract for the supply and delivery of three sets of online partial discharge measurement and monitoring equipment for the TCN in favour of Messrs T and D Technology Limited in the sum of US$ 874,800 offshore plus N240,100,000 onshore with a delivery period of nine months.

“The third approval was the award of the contract for the repairs of 100 MVA and four sets of 60 MVA 132 33 power transformers for TCN in favour of GT Engineering Limited in the sum of US$ 661,220 offshore and N127,758,781 onshore with a delivery period of 12 months.

“On the last one, approval was also granted for the contract for procurement of 10 sets of 330 KV and 30 sets of 133 KV circuit breaker for the TCN in favour of Horsepower Engineering Trading Limited in the sum of US$ 502,719 plus N114,571,500 with a delivery period of six months.”

Also briefing, the Minister of Environment said the Council ratified an anticipatory approval received from President Muhammadu Buhari on the nation’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which is part of its commitment to the climate change pact.

He explained that the contribution, which saw Nigeria agreeing to cut greenhouse gas emission by 20 percent as at last year and by 45 percent in 2030, adding that part of the obligations to the signatories of the agreement is the revision of the progress and the submission of an interim report every five years.

He said: “The Federal Ministry of Environment presented a memo today, seeking for the ratification of an anticipatory approval that we received from Mr. President, on the submission of our primary NDC, that is the Nationally Determined Contribution.

“This is part of the commitment that Nigeria made in 2016 during the Paris Agreement; that every country, after five years, will revise the commitment the country made in cutting down emission.

‘’So, at the time we committed to reducing emission by 20 percent, unconditionally, meaning we can do it by ourselves. That’s by 2020. The 20 percent is by the year 2020. At the same time, we are also committed to reducing 45% by 2030. That’s again from the year 2016.

“So, we did the first the interim report, a country is supposed to send in an interim report to the United Nations Climate Change desk, and then before July 31, you’ll now submit the final report.

‘’We have done that and part of this reporting is again, for every country, doing that will put the country on a good footing as far as climate change action is concerned and this has a number of sectors that we depended on to be able to reach this: Power, Agriculture, Transportation.

“These are areas that we used as part of attending to that commitment that we made and today, we have gotten the approval of the ratification following that statutory approval by Mr. President. So, Nigeria is currently in good standing, as about 100 countries have already submitted and Nigeria is one of those,” he explained.

Asked if Nigeria achieved the 20 percent emission cut as at last year, Mahmood said “yes, we have. Since the ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2016 and even before then, government has put in a number of interventions to deal with the issue of climate change. You see, climate change did not just start in 2016. 2016 happened to be just like the culmination of the problem that showed and there’s need for an immediate action on climate change.

“So, the government rolled out a number of things and this was even before I became a minister and we have done so much, I can give you an example.

That was when we started the issuance of green bond and bond issuance is to generate money, solely for green projects.

“Based on our calculations, we have met that 20 percent last year, in fact, I can even say we have surpassed that. That’s why we took that as unconditional, it’s something that we know already we can.”

BRATISLAVA:
Does it actually taste good?

Why is the fish white and not gutted?

Is it normally served in plastic basins? Does it affect the taste? Why eggs? Is that actually palm oil?

This is quite a strange meal. The origins will be interesting.
Don't cook this for me or else I will send you packing to your father's house

PoliticsAir Force Jet Foils Kidnap Attempt Of 16 Commuters In Zamfara by Parizz(op): 4:38pm On Aug 08, 2021
An attempt by armed bandits to kidnap 16 persons forced out of their vehicles while travelling along Magami -Tofa highway in Guzau, Zamfara State was at the weekend foiled by a Fighter aircraft of Air Component, Operation Hadarin Daji.

Vanguard gathered that an Alpha Jet while on a reconnaissance mission in the North West theatre on Saturday, August 7 2021, observed 4 empty vehicles including 2 Golf Volkwagon sedans in Grey and Red colours off the roadside with all doors ajar.

Further Air Intelligence revealed that 16 persons who were occupants of the vehicles were being marched intọ the Bush by Bandits.

A source who captured the encounter said, “While returning from a recce mission, at a location approximately 19.5 nautical miles South West of Gusau town, precisely between Magami and Tofa, the NAF Alpha jet sighted suspected bandits on 5 motorcycles who had blocked Magami-Gusau road in an ongoing attempt at kidnapping commuters.

“About 2 kilometres into the bush, the suspected bandits were sighted with about 16 persons being led further into the bushes.

“On sighting the Alpha jet, the bandits abandoned their motorcycles and fled into the bush in disarray while the commuters ran back to their vehicles in liberation and gratitude and drove off.

“The pilot exercised restraint in engaging with ammunition onboard the Alpha jet to avoid any unintended injury to the innocent citizens.

“However, the aircraft maintained maximum presence over the exact kidnap point to ensure the safety of innocent citizens within the area.”

When Contacted, Director of NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said he will respond in due course.
