Yayaha Bello, governor of Kogi state, says he is ready to take over the leadership of the country from President Muhammadu Buhari come 2023. Speaking during an Arise TV programme on Monday, the governor said his achievements in Kogi state are desired at the national level. Bello said he is not in support of rotational presidency , adding that the best person with the capacity to unite Nigerians should be the one to rule. He argued that his track record in governing Kogi in the past six years is the reason Nigerians are “yearning” for him to become the president. “Almost six years down the line, Kogi is united more than ever before. Now come to 2023, what I have been able to achieve in Kogi state is desired at national level which I’m sure you know we are living in a global village which whatever you do even in your bedroom is noticed out there,” Bello said. “If Nigerians across board; youth, women, leaders and followers seeing my leadership style, uniting the people, bringing in experts, adding value to governance, prudent and sincere way and manner of utilisation of our resources and getting the results, balancing the equation which is most desired in the country today, if this multitude is yearning and calling me to come and serve this great nation in the year 2023 after president Muhammadu Buhari, I will say, yes I’m ready.” Asked why he can’t wait to complete his second term as governor in 2024 before vying for the presidency, Bello said the interest of the nation supersedes his and that of the Kogi people. “Serving Nigeria in that greater capacity will serve the interest of the people of Kogi state, Nigerians, Africa and even black race than I remaining the executive governor of Kogi state,” he said “By the grace of God when I would have [been] sworn in as the president and commander-in-chief taking over from Buhari on May 29, 2023, Nigeria will have a heave of relief.” https://www.thecable.ng/my-achievements-in-kogi-desired-at-national-level-says-yahaya-bello |

The eastern side in Libya’s conflict have agreed with its opponents on a plan for a phased withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries, but gave no details or timeline for a move seen as crucial to cementing a year-old ceasefire. Mercenaries brought by the foreign powers involved in Libya, including Russia and Turkey, remain entrenched on both sides despite the ceasefire and a parallel political process aimed at resolving the decade-long crisis through elections. Both those U.N.-backed efforts are seen as highly fragile, however, with a constant risk that the process could unravel. An eastern military official said the joint committee meeting in Geneva had agreed on a “an action plan for the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces in a gradual, balanced and simultaneous way”. The official added that international monitors and a monitoring mechanism were needed before any withdrawal could begin. Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush said that a very modest number of mercenaries had already left. Forces from western Libya involved in the talks were not immediately available to comment. The committee was formed through a U.N.-backed ceasefire agreed last year that followed the collapse of eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar’s 14-month offensive against Tripoli. His assault was the latest bout of fighting in a series of conflicts between rival factions since the 2011 uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, drawing in foreign powers. In 2014, Libya split between western and eastern factions with rival administrations, but the latest U.N.-backed peace push led to the installation of a unity government in March. Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt backed Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) in the conflict. Turkey supported the previous Tripoli-based government, which was recognised by the United Nations. Foreign mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group as well as from Syria, Chad and Sudan have been deployed on front lines. This week, U.N. human rights investigators linked mercenaries to possible war crimes. https://von.gov.ng/2021/10/09/libyas-eastern-forces-agree-to-withdraw-mercenaries/ |
Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court, Abuja on Friday fixed Nov. 8 for judgment in the alleged N2.1 billion fraud suit filed against Abdulrasheed Maina, Chairman, defunct Pension Reformed Task Team (PRTT). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had, on Oct. 25, 2019, arraigned Maina (1st defendant), alongside his firm, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd (2nd defendant) before the judge. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N2 billion. Earlier, Anayo Adibe, who was counsel to Maina, had prayed the court to give the defence more time to file their final written addresses, following the dismissal of their Aug. 6 motion, praying the court to reopen his client’s case to allow them call their witnesses. He said he made the plea in the interest of fair hearing and the interest of justice. But the EFCC’s lawyer, Farouk Abdullah opposed the call for an adjournment. Abdullah stressed that in the last adjourned date (on July 16), the court gave a specific order that the final written addresses of all the parties would be heard. According to him, the defendant has almost three months to comply with court order but they did not do so. “Only for the defendant to ask for an adjournment this morning. “The defendant cannot dictate to this court how to conduct business. “We are opposed to the application for adjournment. If it pleases my lord, may we proceed on adoption of our final written address,” the agency’s lawyer said. Justice Abang, in a short ruling then closed Maina’s right to file a final written address and ordered Abdullah to adopt his final written addresses. The judge held that the defence had denied themselves to be heard and not the court. “They cannot dictate to the court when to file their written addresses and no material is placed before the court to seek for an adjournment in their favour,” he held Abang, who noted that Maina counsel only adopted a legal strategy to further delay the trial, said: “Where the strategy fails, they cannot turn around and beg the court.” He then adjourned the matter for judgment. NAN reports that Faisal, Maina’s son, was on Thursday, committed to 24 years imprisonment on three-count charge bordering on money laundering. The judge said the prison terms; five years for count one, 14 years for count two and five years for count three would run concurrently. https://guardian.ng/news/court-to-deliver-judgment-in-suit-against-abdulrasheed-maina-nov-8/ |

The consulate general has disclosed that the United States has opened a Window on America in Osogbo, the Osun State, which would serve as a community resource center for accurate and current information about the political, economic, cultural, educational, and social life in the United States. Delivering a keynote remarks at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH), the U.S. Consulate Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Stephen Ibelli, noted that the new space would offer a calendar of programs on topics of interest designed to bring Americans and Nigerians closer together. “We are so excited today to launch the Window on American here in Osogbo,” Ibelli said. “With its modern design, computer workstations, books, and perhaps most importantly, an open space for members of the community to host conversations of mutual interest, the new center exemplifies the U.S. government’s commitment to a core tenet of democracy: A citizen’s right to free access to information.” He explained that the Osogbo Window on America would be a reference point for free information. “Through the Osogbo Window on America we will provide employability and leadership training for young people, offer information on study opportunities in the U.S., showcase American culture and values, as well as foster closer people-to-people ties between the people of Nigeria and the United States,” Ibelli added. The Chief Medical Director of OSUTH, Professor Peter Olaitan, expressed appreciation at the location of the Window on America at the medical facility. He expressed optimism that staff, students and residents of Osogbo would benefit from the resources available at the center. A Window on America is a type of American Space located in over 150 countries worldwide. In order to engage more Nigerian audiences in their local communities, the U.S. Mission is adding new Windows on America to the family of American Spaces in Nigeria. Windows on America provides a venue for the embassy and consulate outreach activities, offering a meeting place for U.S. Government alumni, and a host of visiting speakers (including embassy staff, Fulbright scholars, and other Americans), film series, and other events that promote a better understanding of the United States. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2021/10/06/us-opens-window-on-america-in-osogbo/ |

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested 24,000 security personnel to enable it to conduct the November 6 governorship election in Anambra state. This is amid online threats by proponents of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who continue to push for and work towards the cancellation of the Anambra 2021 election slated for next month. Per Punch on Friday, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Nwachukwu Orji, made the request during a one-day sensitization workshop on political broadcast organised by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Awka, the Anambra State capital. According to him, 26,000 ad hoc staff with 24,000 security personnel were needed to conduct the election. While stressing the importance of a knowledgeable electorate in terms of civic education and enlightenment, Orji said the commission was battling to overcome escalating security challenges posed by secessionist agitators, gunmen and COVID-19 pandemic. Governor Nyesom Wike has threatened to bar Godswill Akpabio, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, from using a road Rivers government is constructing. Mr Wike accused the minister of reneging on his pledge to contribute to the road construction. “As I speak, you have not brought one naira,” the governor told Mr Akpabio. “Meanwhile, the road is almost 35 per cent ready. If you don’t pay, I’ll make sure you do not use that road to your headquarters. Because, yes, I’m not a Father Christmas.” The Rivers governor revealed that there was an agreement between his government, the NDDC, and the Niger Delta Affairs on how to contribute to the construction. “Mr Minister, (Akpabio), you are here. You and the MD. You told me in the Government House that you will partner the state government. You said you would bring N2.5 billion, and the state will bring N2.5 billion for the dualisation of the bypass,” Mr Wike said at the inauguration of the Muhammadu Buhari Nigeria Police Protection Unit, an NDDC 68 flats project in Port Harcourt. Vice president Yemi Osinbajo was in Port Harcourt on Tuesday to inaugurate the project and other facilities. https://gazettengr.com/ill-block-akpabio-from-using-roads-i-constructed-wike/ |
