The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, who gave the confirmation at the resumed briefing of the Presidential Steering Committee, on Monday, in Abuja, cited Akwa Ibom State as having nine of the cases. The NCDC boss listed Lagos, Rivers, and Oyo states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as the other places where at least one case of the Delta variant of COVID-19 had been confirmed in the country. Ihekweazu stated that the agency had scaled up its sequencing capacity to have a better understanding of the burden of the variants of concern in the country. He noted that the country had capacity for sequencing the variants, noting that Lagos state alone had three laboratories with capacity to do that, alongside the ACEGID lab in Ede and the National Reference Lab at the NCDC. “We will continue to scale the weekly number of samples sequenced as part of our surveillance”, Ikekweazu said, while stressing that the risk of virus mutation was higher when there was a high transmission of the virus. “While sequencing is important for us to understand the situation, handwashing, physical distancing and the proper use of face masks are very important to prevent the spread of the virus,” he further said. He stressed that Nigerians must continue to adhere to all preventive guidelines to stay protected from getting infected with the COVID-19 virus, while herd immunity can only be achieved when over 50 percent of the population was vaccinated. Timber Marketers in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, Tuesday protested the shutting down of their market by Soldiers. The timber marketers were seen protesting along Owerri-Orlu road when they discovered that the road leading to the market has been barricaded by soldiers. Some of the protesting timber traders who spoke to newsmen in Orlu, said they were demading for the soldiers to open the road block for them to start their business. According to them, “We came in on Tuesday morning, to start business and we saw that the road leading to our shops have been closed and we are asking why is our shops closed and nobody is talking to us and why should the military blocked the road. We want them to open the road so that we can begin our business that is why we are protesting.” However, when Vanguard inquired to know from the timber traders they said: “On Monday, we got a report that those who attacked Omuma in Oru East local government area came from the Timber market, and are members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, and that the security operatives have been investigating the issues.” “We have also been told that is because that we obeyed the sit-at-home order on the day Nnamdi Kanu appeared in court that is while they have closed down the timber market.” When contacted the 34 Artillery Bridgade Command Obinze, Army Public Relations Officer, PRO, Babatunde Zubiru, he did not pick his call to react to the allegation that Army shut down the market. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/soldiers-shut-imo-timber-market-as-marketers-stage-protest/ |
Governor Mohammed Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has, in Kaduna on Sunday, warned that the war against banditry in the Northwest will remain a significant security challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country. Matawalle spoke while presenting a paper titled “The Fight Against Banditry in Northwest Nigeria: Challenges and Solutions” at the inauguration of the new executives of Arewa Media Writers Association, saying it was evident that the Northern leaders were responsible for the plight of the region. Represented by the Zamfara State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Magaji, Governor Matawalle said when he took office on May 29th, 2019, Zamfara State had already been mired in a serious security crisis for over a decade, marked by banditry, livestock rustling, kidnapping, and a host of other crimes. On an almost daily basis, he explained, the State was in the news for bloodletting, fire, pillage, and significant displacement of people, particularly those living in rural areas. According to him, “historical economic, social and cultural ties between the dominant communities of Fulani and Hausa were ruptured; farming activities across the State were halted, and commercial activities were crippled.” “With poverty on the increase and food security seriously affected by the crisis, the State was on the verge of a catastrophic social eruption capable of destabilising our communities and the northwest subregion.” “Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs are the hot spots of banditry even though there are no mining activities going there. Rural banditry in Zamfara and other parts of the north, in my opinion, is a result of the progressive degradation of our moral standards and a culture of greed fed by an unfettered need for material goods.” “As shown in this presentation, the culture of cattle raiding by pastoralist groups is not something new. It was practised in the days gone by to demonstrate courage and bravery, and no violence was used. What we witness today, however, are horrible crimes unimaginable, which include rape, killings of women and children, kidnapping, highway robbery and other gruesome atrocities.” “It is evident, therefore, that we, the leaders, are responsible for the plight of the north. The north lacks responsible leadership to steer it through our time’s uncharted waters. Our ruling elite has no vision for the region beyond gaining political power. We have all seen how the elites in the south-east and southwest respond in unison to all matters concerning their regions’ development. We have seen how they have a defined agenda and are relentless in their pursuit of regional development,” he said. Speaking on the challenges to peace efforts the Governor said his experience over the past two years has shown that the major challenges to their peace efforts were reluctance by the affected states to embrace peace dialogue, which would have deprived the recalcitrant bandits currently tormenting their people of safe corridors in the region. Also, “lack of support from a section of politicians that wish to take advantage of the situation to achieve political ends and the need for the Federal Government to key into the peace initiative so that appropriate resources can be allocated.” “Unless we all wake up to the situation, the war against banditry in the northwest will remain a significant security challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country. The destruction that banditry is wreaking on the region’s people and the economy is unfathomable.” “This is a siren appeal to leaders of the region to wake up from their lethargy and unite in combating this grave challenge. We need to get to the roots of the situation, stop politicising it and act decisively,” he said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/boko-haram-banditry-wake-up-from-your-lethargy-unite-stop-politicising-fight-against-terrorism-matawalle-challenges-northern-leaders-elites/ |

Brazil great Marta has become the first footballer in history to score in five consecutive Olympic Games. Marta scored the opener from close range after nine minutes and later added a second-half strike as Brazil thrashed China 5-0 to open their campaign in Japan. The 35-year-old made her Olympics debut back in 2004 when the Games were held in Athens. Marta went on to score in the Beijing, London, and Rio tournaments before also netting in Tokyo on Wednesday. She is yet to win the Olympics, though, earning silver medals in 2004 and 2008. Marta’s teammate Formiga, who is impressively still playing at 43, also broke records by playing against China. An astonishing 25 years on from her Olympics debut in Atlanta in 1996, Formiga has become the oldest player in the history of football at the Games. She is also the first Brazilian to compete in seven editions of the Olympics. Next up for Brazil is a clash with the Netherlands on Saturday. https://cdn.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/brazil-star-marta_1ig9n21h47gji1db83m194oq32-1024x538.jpg https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/legendary-marta-sets-olympic-record-in-brazils-5-0-thrashing-of-china/ |

Nice one. More feminists should follow suit and lead by example. It's a sad thing that these so called feminists have been cheating men for donkey years with no remorse. It's one thing to agitate for your rights it's another thing to practice what you preach. You can't eat your cake and have it. It's not possible. Feminism should be about justice and fairness and not the other way round. |
The pan Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has tasked South East Governors to consider what it described as the ‘bigger picture of the consequences’ which the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu would bring to Eastern Nigeria as soon as his retrial begins on 26th July, 2021. The group explained that obedience to Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s advice to his teeming supporters to shun any form of protest and procession across the region may not last long. The Chidi Ibeh led Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a statement, said it could no longer afford to stop Kanu’s supporters from hitting the streets in protest against the continued detention of their leader. Ohanaeze urged the Governors to explore their cordial relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari to negotiate the release of the detained IPOB leader, stressing that such would bring total peace to the South East zone. “South East Governors and Igbo elders should consider the bigger picture of the consequences of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention. They must forgive his excesses. This is not the time for blame, accusations and counter-accusations. Ohanaeze Ndigbo appeals to South East Governors to explore the harmonious relationships between them and President Buhari to secure soft landing for the detained IPOB leader for the sustainability of the peaceful atmosphere that just returned to the zone. “The previous Nnamdi Kanu’s rantings and insults heaped on South East Governors and Igbo Elders were unbearable but the best way to forgive him is to secure his release. As for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, we will continue to talk to his teeming supporters to shun any protest and give the South East Governors and other Igbo leaders the opportunity to negotiate his release with President Buhari. We have implicit confidence that the continuous silence of the Governors is golden and as backstage activities and negotiations are going on quietly without much noise. What is required now is the release of Nnamdi Kanu through out of court settlement.” Meantime, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned South East Governors that allegedly planned and executed the arrest and extradition of its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to work for his release or be ready to face the wrath of the group. IPOB also told the South East politicians serving and non serving that they all have hand in the ordeal of Mazi Kanu, for their alleged persuasions for him to accept dialogue and in the process convinced him to visit Kenya to commence the process for dialogue, only to have him arrested and extradited to Nigeria, saying that they must ensure that nothing untoward happens to him in detention and must work for his release. IPOB, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said that verifiable information at the group’s disposal revealed that serving and non serving Igbo politicians with a few selfish and greedy businessmen in collaboration with Nigerian security men betrayed Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. IPOB therefore, tasked Governors, National Assembly members, Ministers, Commissioners, State lawmakers, State Commissioners, traditional rulers, Local Government Area chairmen, all political appointees both current and former to ensure that Mazi Kanu is freed from detention as soon as possible. The Biafra agitating group said that there is no need for the class of people it has mentioned to pretend or feign ignorance over its leaders arrest, saying that if they failed to stand with the people by ensuring his release, they should get ready for the wrath of IPOB. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/forgive-nnamdi-kanu-facilitate-his-release-ohanaeze-tells-s-east-govs/ |
